Oh, wait, were you on a mission or were you doing English? No, okay. So I I went to go teach a class like like English? Really? It's a it's a Steam Academy. So we had three other teachers teaching math and science and engineering, right? And I was teaching the English portion. So the kids were gonna present a project to the whole school and their parents, and they had me, you know, you're gonna teach English for five periods. And I took five periods was how long? 55 minutes like like here in uh in America, you know, like some schools 55 minutes.

Uh no, it was like six days. Oh, okay, six times. Six days, yeah.

No, it was a uh special program Steam Academy, uh-huh, STEM, whatever you want to call it. And they were just there for that, and then they went home after the program was over.

So wait, wait, you're in China, and you said they went in like the the Chinese kids or American like a school?

So we took like ten kids from here. I won't say from where? From an American high school, and they were our aides, so four teachers, two of them were our aides in the classroom. And what you call it, then we got to a high school out there in a city called Ding Zhou, and they had their students, uh the regular students, and what you call it, we taught them, you know, basically. So so they had a project to work on. They they had a bamboo plant, and they had to uh measure the temperature, the mean, the median, the mode, all that. It was it was pretty cool.

It was actually portion, like what did they have to say?

So I I helped them put like the sentence frames together, so when they presented to their parents, it was like a gallery walk. Um they they would each one of them would say something in English. Oh so it was pretty cool.

Did they know any English or no?

Yeah, a lot of them did did. As a matter of fact, they surprised me because a lot of the curriculum it was high school nine through twelve. A lot of their work was in English, you know. Like you open their books, oh Mr. Navarro, we know English, but they didn't speak it very well, but they hold on.

Yeah, or were they Chinese? They uh maybe two or three of them were two of them were Chinese American, okay, and then two of them were Filipino, and then two of them were Mexican Americans, and uh, what else were they?

But in addition to them, you were teaching kids from China.

No, so they were our aides, our assistants, but then they were helping me with the kids from China. Oh, got it, got it, got it, got it. So, like, for example, like I don't know how to do technology, like the you know how you gotta press all this, the power points. So they were good at that, you know? Oh, yeah, and I go, hey, do this. And they're like, we got it.

We get like we're old and we're idiots, too. So we don't when it comes to being tech technologically savage, dude, it's just it's not us. So that's what we need the younger kids for it.

I guess some some sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't, like with your birth birthday year, like with me. I was born in Oh, like at the beginning or at the end of the year to be the grade girl? Yeah, I was born in 79 and then I graduated in 97. So you like you flip the number. Oh, oh that's right. I guess it's some like only if certain people have that.

It wasn't like an opportunity that you saw and you signed up for it or something.

I it was kind of like that. So you know, I was going on YouTube with my student and she was showing me Taiwan where she's from. She was look, you'll have a good time, go here. There's a lot of good food. And I go, Yeah, you know what, I'm gonna take a trip this summer. And and I knew this man that had gone there. Well, he's gone there like 26 times. And um so I contacted him and he sent my email to another lady. And the lady said, Oh, we're gonna be interviewing people for we need one English teacher and to take, but we got a lot of people to interview. But I I I really don't think I think why are you selling yourself short?

That's all the bullshit, but he I I mean, I would have loved to have a teacher like like David, man. He would have been one of those one of those tough ones. Yeah, look, I tell everybody, dude, it's like we like messing around with you and everything. It's like, but I'm sure once you're in your element, then you freaking kick ass once you do me it's funny. It's like you would have to to to be able to still do it after all these years and really get through the kids and everything. So you gotta be doing something right. Yeah, what's that? You know, it's like so everybody out there don't take it the wrong way. You know, it's like we we like playing around with our boy and everything, but believe me, I have nothing but respect for you, dude. It's what and hey, but that's what Gen X does. Yeah, you know, we we talk shit to each other. Yeah, we we we took the hits, you know. But but believe me, dude, when people say asked about you being a teacher, I'm like, I'm like, he must be good at what he does because he's still doing it and he's done it in a bunch of different places, and now you beat out I don't know how many people for that awesome opportunity to go to China, dude.

What else that oh you know what it was? It was pork, but it it was like it looked like orange chicken, but it was made out of a red sauce. It was delicious. I love it looking pork sweet. It was sweet. Uh-huh. Yeah. And then there was some shrimp I ate, and I I had an abundance of this shrimp with broccoli. And they were like a little bit with the shrimp, and the and and the broccoli tasted great.

That's what I liked about about uh did you eat at the same place every uh uh every time, or do you try you try to try in different spots?

Well, the first four days I was there, I was in Beijing. And then so we went to different restaurants, you know?

And um and then after that we went to the high school to the high school, and then we had our own like cafeteria there. Oh okay. And the same chefs, but uh we kept we kept going to to like different um restaurants, you know? So one of them we went to and it I was amazed it had like like a turtle inside a tank and like fishes, those big fishes. Yeah. So it's more traditional. The koi? The what?

The koi, Japanese koi, the big fish, or yeah, I guess uh is that what it's called? There's a koi fish. I don't know if that's what you saw, but that's Japanese, dude. Oh yeah, you're in China. My bad.

Yeah, and then um then we went to another place where you sit down and and you turn like a wheel. Oh, the lazy susan. Uh huh. Yeah, lazy susan. But they have more American food like French fries and uh like. But it was mixed with with I like that one better to be honest. The too traditional was like it was too, I don't know, I don't know. I like the fusion with with a mixture of American and Chinese food.

Is there a Chinese restaurant here that like you would say is authentic to taste like over there or no?

I don't I don't really go too much to eat Chinese food, Lano.

You're always eating Mexican Mexican and bats, tacos and burgers, dude. That's it. That's all this guy knows. I hit him, I hit him up. I was I was doing the tires on the van, and it was just down the street from his where he lives. And I told him, hey, come, you know, let's go get something to eat. And then like I was on the phone and I was trying to get off the phone, and then um he comes in and then he like he pulls up and I leave my van so they could do the tires because we're doing all four tires. And I tell him, Yeah, I see somewhere around here. He's like, he's oh, oh he goes, he goes, Can we go to Boyle Heights? I'm like, no, dude, because he's right there in East Lows. Like right here. He goes, somewhere around here, like someone goes by. And then he's like, okay. And then he then like I'm on the phone. I'm trying to get off the phone from with James and Marcos. Then I see him getting on the freeway. I'm like, dude, where are you going? He's like, oh, Boyle Heights. I go, I said around here. He's like, yeah, it is around here, or whatever. I'm like, dude, I go, they weren't gonna take like 45 minutes. And then he takes me to that estrella. And then the whole time I'm like, I'm gonna get a torta. I'm gonna get a torta. That's what he said. And then I I switch it up and I end up getting a burrito de a pastor. That shit pissed me out.

Yeah, so I mean, that that stench is pretty crazy. Right? Who knows when that shit's gonna be they've already cleared. But they got it all cleaned out. I think so. It's just the stench that's in the air. I don't know.

For 20 bucks, you get one that they that's called a pastelon, and they give you like this huge portion. Like they get like a coffee can almost and fill it like half half halfway with um depending on what you order. Uh-huh. Well, that one the pastelon is it's like a campchana. So it's got everything in it.

Like because I know I know a lot of these places, they're ceviche, like they're the fish, they like grinding it. And that's what makes it gives it that nasty texture. Oh so I know what you're talking about. You know, it's like they don't they don't because it's a pain in the ass to chop it up. It's little bit, bitty pieces. It's hard. It's a pain in the ass. And I know because I make it. Uh-huh. You know, and and it's always, you know, pretty time consuming. How hard is it to make? So easy.

Oh yeah, but they had their bottles there, dude. And they were selling to everybody, man. They didn't care. Yeah. And it's like I went there one time, you know, and and I was there and I don't think I'm like, how did they not be busted yet? I'm like you know when um how does nobody sell it? Like when me when me and Vanessa uh first started dating, I I I took her right there to State Street over there by Minions House. Yeah. Because back then, you know, on State Street, they had it all like live. They had a bunch of people set up. Right. And uh it was one of our first dates, and we went over there and and uh remember where as soon as we got there, we we got those uh they're making cantaritos. We got a couple cantaritos with palomas in it. Yeah, dude, right there. But I mean they cracked down on that quick. Yeah, like they shut it down quick. Red Snapper is like the best. You know, you can use tilapia, you can use uh rockfish or whatever, but I think red snapper is the best. So find red snapper, preferably without the skin, like just the fillets. You know, but when I buy it, I buy it at Sams Club and it has a skin, so you gotta take the skin off. Okay. That's kind of tricky without ruining the whole damn thing. You just chop it up into little chunks, uh, however fine you want it. And then you just you know, you put maybe like a you get a bunch of limes and lemons. Uh-huh. Maybe depending on how juicy they are, make about a cup of well, depending on how much you have of of both things. So you put enough nyme and lemon juice to cover all the fish and you let it you just let it sit in the fridge for a few hours. That way it's a reposa. You know, the the lemon cooks it. And then, you know, just throw in what you want, you know, chop up some onion, some cilantro, you know, you can chop up some tomato. People like like putting like shredded carrot or they chop up the carrot real fine, you know, real small. It all depends. You know, you can put avocado in it if you want. It's like it's all up to you, cucumber. Everybody, everybody does it their own way. Yeah, a lot of it's a good one. And then um, I would and then like to season it, salt, pepper, uh-huh, and then put uh one secret ingredient is a little bit of um cumit. Obey.

We parked kind of close to it, and as soon as we walked down the bridge, there was a cool little water hole right there. We just set up our easy up there and just start one little small chest, and that was it. But you can go either either way. Um look at it, and it's and it was just like that, dude. And I was thinking you know what I was telling Vanessa? I go, you gotta you gotta uh take your girls to that, man. Yeah, I mean they're a little small, but we can get bigger. Um just uh a day go out there with the easy up, and and if you if you can go and then find uh like where we went, if you walked a little bit further, you have to get there early. But there's a cool spot, a water hole, where there's just a big old shade area where you can just chill there. But if you go out a little bit lower, you gotta you gotta have an easy up. Uh-huh. But there's like two ways that have like good size water holes where where if you go early, you can get set up your spot. So right where that bridge is. Like that's early in the drive. Yeah.
