But over the last"},{"startTime":145.26,"endTime":148.44,"body":"few years, there have been some"},{"startTime":145.26,"endTime":148.44,"body":"articles that have been written,"},{"startTime":148.44,"endTime":154.05,"body":"say, two articles by Dr. Adam"},{"startTime":148.44,"endTime":154.05,"body":"Koontz, another one by Dr. Ben"},{"startTime":154.05,"endTime":157.68,"body":"Mays before that, and then"},{"startTime":154.05,"endTime":157.68,"body":"several years before Dr. Mayes,"},{"startTime":157.68,"endTime":161.58,"body":"I believe it was 2010, Dr. David"},{"startTime":157.68,"endTime":161.58,"body":"Schmidt, of St. Louis wrote an"},{"startTime":161.58,"endTime":166.8,"body":"article as well, which said, and"},{"startTime":161.58,"endTime":166.8,"body":"this is very broadly and"},{"startTime":166.8,"endTime":171.51,"body":"generally speaking, kind of"},{"startTime":166.8,"endTime":171.51,"body":"criticized a formulaic log"},{"startTime":171.51,"endTime":177.18,"body":"gospel kind of rut that we've"},{"startTime":171.51,"endTime":177.18,"body":"fallen into. And in the paper"},{"startTime":177.21,"endTime":181.14,"body":"that we're discussing today, I"},{"startTime":177.21,"endTime":181.14,"body":"kind of dissect some of that"},{"startTime":181.14,"endTime":184.68,"body":"problem as well. But as you can"},{"startTime":181.14,"endTime":184.68,"body":"imagine, that really hit home"},{"startTime":184.68,"endTime":189.87,"body":"for me, right? Because, like my"},{"startTime":184.68,"endTime":189.87,"body":"whole life, I've been trained to"},{"startTime":189.9,"endTime":194.97,"body":"look at the text and say,"},{"startTime":189.9,"endTime":194.97,"body":"Where's, where's the cross? And what is the gospel in"},{"startTime":203.61,"endTime":207.06,"body":"this text, and that provides all"},{"startTime":203.61,"endTime":207.06,"body":"the material for a sermon? And I"},{"startTime":210.33,"endTime":214.47,"body":"saw, I read, I read those"},{"startTime":214.47,"endTime":217.47,"body":"articles, it felt like to me the"},{"startTime":214.47,"endTime":217.47,"body":"beginning of the conversation,"},{"startTime":218.16,"endTime":222.09,"body":"this relationship between say,"},{"startTime":218.16,"endTime":222.09,"body":"blog gospel preaching and what"},{"startTime":222.12,"endTime":226.41,"body":"some other suggested as an"},{"startTime":222.12,"endTime":226.41,"body":"alternative, which would be, say"},{"startTime":226.41,"endTime":231.45,"body":"the fivefold use, preaching,"},{"startTime":226.41,"endTime":231.45,"body":"which historically is how"},{"startTime":231.45,"endTime":237.9,"body":"Lutheran preached at least"},{"startTime":231.45,"endTime":237.9,"body":"before say 1940 And, you know,"},{"startTime":237.9,"endTime":241.41,"body":"comes from Second Timothy three,"},{"startTime":237.9,"endTime":241.41,"body":"and Romans chapter five,"},{"startTime":241.74,"endTime":246.33,"body":"referring to the teaching are"},{"startTime":241.74,"endTime":246.33,"body":"all scripture is useful for"},{"startTime":246.84,"endTime":250.11,"body":"teaching, rebuking, correcting,"},{"startTime":246.84,"endTime":250.11,"body":"training and righteousness and"},{"startTime":250.11,"endTime":254.85,"body":"consoling or comforting. So I"},{"startTime":250.11,"endTime":254.85,"body":"basically got started on the"},{"startTime":254.85,"endTime":259.68,"body":"topic by my own experience and"},{"startTime":254.85,"endTime":259.68,"body":"said, Okay, I need to figure out"},{"startTime":259.77,"endTime":262.92,"body":"exactly what's going on here so"},{"startTime":259.77,"endTime":262.92,"body":"that I can continue preaching."},{"startTime":265.08,"endTime":268.26,"body":"Yeah, that's interesting. Now,"},{"startTime":265.08,"endTime":268.26,"body":"you and I come from different"},{"startTime":268.26,"endTime":271.17,"body":"Lutheran backgrounds who are"},{"startTime":268.26,"endTime":271.17,"body":"part of the Lutheran Church"},{"startTime":271.17,"endTime":274.44,"body":"Missouri Synod, and I am part of"},{"startTime":271.17,"endTime":274.44,"body":"the Wisconsin Senate. But"},{"startTime":274.59,"endTime":277.35,"body":"historically, we talked about"},{"startTime":274.59,"endTime":277.35,"body":"this. It seems like every other"},{"startTime":277.35,"endTime":280.68,"body":"episode, you know, that was all"},{"startTime":277.35,"endTime":280.68,"body":"part of that historical"},{"startTime":281.04,"endTime":286.23,"body":"Synoptical conference, and that,"},{"startTime":281.04,"endTime":286.23,"body":"I would say, the preaching"},{"startTime":286.23,"endTime":291.09,"body":"mindset, the preaching heritage,"},{"startTime":286.23,"endTime":291.09,"body":"is something that I would I"},{"startTime":291.09,"endTime":293.16,"body":"would agree that from my"},{"startTime":291.09,"endTime":293.16,"body":"perspective, too, it was where's"},{"startTime":293.16,"endTime":296.82,"body":"that log gospel in each and"},{"startTime":293.16,"endTime":296.82,"body":"every single text that seems to"},{"startTime":296.82,"endTime":299.55,"body":"be something that although our"},{"startTime":296.82,"endTime":299.55,"body":"sentences have gone separate"},{"startTime":299.55,"endTime":304.98,"body":"ways, 60 plus years ago now,"},{"startTime":299.55,"endTime":304.98,"body":"that is something that continued"},{"startTime":305.04,"endTime":309.96,"body":"its own thread and both from my,"},{"startTime":305.04,"endTime":309.96,"body":"my kind of personal perspective,"},{"startTime":309.96,"endTime":315.0,"body":"but also kind of a historical"},{"startTime":309.96,"endTime":315.0,"body":"reckoning to, which is also"},{"startTime":315.0,"endTime":319.2,"body":"interesting because prior to"},{"startTime":315.0,"endTime":319.2,"body":"that both of our sentence had"},{"startTime":319.2,"endTime":324.15,"body":"some pretty strong peeper"},{"startTime":319.2,"endTime":324.15,"body":"influences. Of course, Francis"},{"startTime":324.15,"endTime":328.68,"body":"France paper was while they were"},{"startTime":324.15,"endTime":328.68,"body":"all in the Wisconsin Senate"},{"startTime":328.68,"endTime":332.22,"body":"originally, but France Francis"},{"startTime":328.68,"endTime":332.22,"body":"paper wrote the famous dogmatics"},{"startTime":332.22,"endTime":335.22,"body":"text and of course, was"},{"startTime":332.22,"endTime":335.22,"body":"president of the Concordia"},{"startTime":335.22,"endTime":339.78,"body":"Seminary for a while. And now"},{"startTime":335.22,"endTime":339.78,"body":"you're looking at Reinhold"},{"startTime":339.78,"endTime":343.53,"body":"peepers homiletics book? Well,"},{"startTime":339.78,"endTime":343.53,"body":"agus peeper was a professor at"},{"startTime":344.73,"endTime":347.61,"body":"our seminary so that there's"},{"startTime":344.73,"endTime":347.61,"body":"kind of that common heritage,"},{"startTime":347.61,"endTime":352.08,"body":"but it's interesting, both a"},{"startTime":347.61,"endTime":352.08,"body":"before and an after. So you"},{"startTime":352.08,"endTime":354.63,"body":"explain why have you got on this"},{"startTime":352.08,"endTime":354.63,"body":"topic because it was relevant to"},{"startTime":354.63,"endTime":357.69,"body":"you and how you viewed"},{"startTime":354.63,"endTime":357.69,"body":"preaching. And, you know, just"},{"startTime":357.69,"endTime":359.64,"body":"reflecting what I've seen, it"},{"startTime":357.69,"endTime":359.64,"body":"did kind of seem like there's"},{"startTime":359.64,"endTime":363.21,"body":"only one right way to approach a"},{"startTime":359.64,"endTime":363.21,"body":"text only one right way to"},{"startTime":363.63,"endTime":367.62,"body":"generally formulate a sermon."},{"startTime":363.63,"endTime":367.62,"body":"But that has been challenged"},{"startTime":367.62,"endTime":371.55,"body":"now, just thinking about"},{"startTime":367.62,"endTime":371.55,"body":"homiletics in general. But now"},{"startTime":371.55,"endTime":374.64,"body":"we looking at the historical"},{"startTime":371.55,"endTime":374.64,"body":"angle realize there's a"},{"startTime":374.67,"endTime":379.74,"body":"different historical perspective"},{"startTime":374.67,"endTime":379.74,"body":"that also filters Oh, is that"},{"startTime":379.74,"endTime":382.86,"body":"really the only cookie cutter"},{"startTime":379.74,"endTime":382.86,"body":"now as a cookie cutter because"},{"startTime":382.86,"endTime":387.3,"body":"that or stencil is you might use"},{"startTime":382.86,"endTime":387.3,"body":"a very particular way to do"},{"startTime":387.3,"endTime":393.9,"body":"something. So I guess my"},{"startTime":387.3,"endTime":393.9,"body":"question is, now we tie this"},{"startTime":393.9,"endTime":396.42,"body":"together, and if you want to add"},{"startTime":393.9,"endTime":396.42,"body":"anything on top of that, but"},{"startTime":396.42,"endTime":400.29,"body":"what value is there for"},{"startTime":396.42,"endTime":400.29,"body":"contemporary Lutherans and"},{"startTime":400.29,"endTime":403.92,"body":"becoming familiar with say, for"},{"startTime":400.29,"endTime":403.92,"body":"example, Reinhold peepers"},{"startTime":404.04,"endTime":405.18,"body":"preaching theology?"},{"startTime":406.32,"endTime":410.94,"body":"Well, Reinhold peeper is of"},{"startTime":406.32,"endTime":410.94,"body":"primary use and importance for"},{"startTime":410.94,"endTime":415.11,"body":"contemporary Lutheran preaching,"},{"startTime":410.94,"endTime":415.11,"body":"because of how he goes about the"},{"startTime":415.11,"endTime":421.77,"body":"task of training preachers and"},{"startTime":415.11,"endTime":421.77,"body":"homiletics in his textbook, and"},{"startTime":424.41,"endTime":430.35,"body":"he specifically doesn't just"},{"startTime":424.41,"endTime":430.35,"body":"create something new, but he is"},{"startTime":430.35,"endTime":435.24,"body":"extremely well read. And I would"},{"startTime":430.35,"endTime":435.24,"body":"say fluent, by the way that he"},{"startTime":435.24,"endTime":440.85,"body":"uses it in in a corpus of"},{"startTime":435.24,"endTime":440.85,"body":"homiletical teachings, from"},{"startTime":440.88,"endTime":444.75,"body":"especially in Lutheran in Luke,"},{"startTime":440.88,"endTime":444.75,"body":"the history of Lutheranism. But"},{"startTime":444.75,"endTime":447.45,"body":"then going back, of course, to"},{"startTime":444.75,"endTime":447.45,"body":"the ancient church, fathers,"},{"startTime":448.59,"endTime":451.2,"body":"Luther, the ancient Church"},{"startTime":448.59,"endTime":451.2,"body":"Fathers and then back to"},{"startTime":451.2,"endTime":455.46,"body":"Biblical preaching. If you read"},{"startTime":451.2,"endTime":455.46,"body":"his textbook, what you'll find"},{"startTime":456.09,"endTime":463.5,"body":"is that about this is just a"},{"startTime":456.09,"endTime":463.5,"body":"spitball number, but say 50% of"},{"startTime":463.5,"endTime":469.77,"body":"the book is him quoting other"},{"startTime":463.5,"endTime":469.77,"body":"people, and at least 50% maybe"},{"startTime":469.77,"endTime":473.67,"body":"up to 65 or more percent, and"},{"startTime":469.77,"endTime":473.67,"body":"then the rest of it would be his"},{"startTime":473.67,"endTime":479.25,"body":"own editions. So what does"},{"startTime":473.67,"endTime":479.25,"body":"Reinhold peeper represent? He"},{"startTime":479.25,"endTime":484.8,"body":"represents a synthesis of"},{"startTime":479.25,"endTime":484.8,"body":"Lutheran teaching on preaching"},{"startTime":486.0,"endTime":491.94,"body":"for especially the past several"},{"startTime":486.0,"endTime":491.94,"body":"centuries, say, from the 16th"},{"startTime":491.94,"endTime":495.39,"body":"century through the very"},{"startTime":491.94,"endTime":495.39,"body":"beginning of the 20th century,"},{"startTime":496.68,"endTime":499.71,"body":"including, you know, a rich"},{"startTime":496.68,"endTime":499.71,"body":"tradition of preaching before"},{"startTime":499.71,"endTime":504.69,"body":"that. And the reason why paper"},{"startTime":499.71,"endTime":504.69,"body":"is of particular importance is"},{"startTime":504.69,"endTime":509.73,"body":"because all I mean, I did not"},{"startTime":504.69,"endTime":509.73,"body":"even know he existed two years"},{"startTime":509.73,"endTime":515.13,"body":"ago, and I did not know that the"},{"startTime":509.73,"endTime":515.13,"body":"people of the people he quoted,"},{"startTime":515.31,"endTime":518.28,"body":"right, he talks about a man"},{"startTime":515.31,"endTime":518.28,"body":"named Hutto, he talks about"},{"startTime":518.58,"endTime":523.2,"body":"growth different. He talks about"},{"startTime":518.58,"endTime":523.2,"body":"shot, he talks about homes. And"},{"startTime":523.32,"endTime":526.77,"body":"I mean, maybe I had heard one or"},{"startTime":523.32,"endTime":526.77,"body":"two of those names before, but I"},{"startTime":526.77,"endTime":530.01,"body":"had no idea that they wrote"},{"startTime":526.77,"endTime":530.01,"body":"these extensive books and"},{"startTime":530.01,"endTime":534.3,"body":"textbooks on preaching, and"},{"startTime":530.01,"endTime":534.3,"body":"Reinhold, deeper and of course,"},{"startTime":534.3,"endTime":540.54,"body":"JJ rombach is like the main one"},{"startTime":534.3,"endTime":540.54,"body":"by his homiletical teachings. He"},{"startTime":540.54,"endTime":543.54,"body":"takes all of that just read it"},{"startTime":540.54,"endTime":543.54,"body":"very thoroughly synthesizes it"},{"startTime":543.54,"endTime":547.35,"body":"and just presents it to the"},{"startTime":543.54,"endTime":547.35,"body":"American Evangelical Lutheran"},{"startTime":547.35,"endTime":552.9,"body":"Church. Not in the sense of the"},{"startTime":547.35,"endTime":552.9,"body":"the church body, but the"},{"startTime":553.59,"endTime":558.09,"body":"Evangelical Lutheran Church of"},{"startTime":553.59,"endTime":558.09,"body":"that is in this country. There"},{"startTime":558.09,"endTime":559.92,"body":"you go. There's"},{"startTime":559.92,"endTime":562.29,"body":"so many acronyms you have to"},{"startTime":559.92,"endTime":562.29,"body":"watch out. You might actually"},{"startTime":562.32,"endTime":564.93,"body":"talk about a real group, but"},{"startTime":562.32,"endTime":564.93,"body":"yeah, good. You're saying Yeah."},{"startTime":565.23,"endTime":569.13,"body":"So he's providing, you know,"},{"startTime":565.23,"endTime":569.13,"body":"just to kind of speak back to"},{"startTime":569.13,"endTime":571.62,"body":"what you've been telling,"},{"startTime":569.13,"endTime":571.62,"body":"telling me and see if I get it,"},{"startTime":571.62,"endTime":576.0,"body":"right. But he's basically"},{"startTime":571.62,"endTime":576.0,"body":"providing this treasure trove of"},{"startTime":576.0,"endTime":580.41,"body":"this is our Lutheran historical"},{"startTime":576.0,"endTime":580.41,"body":"preaching tradition from the"},{"startTime":580.41,"endTime":585.96,"body":"past 400 years. Let me summarize"},{"startTime":580.41,"endTime":585.96,"body":"it for you. Let me boil it down"},{"startTime":585.96,"endTime":588.45,"body":"to the to the gems, but you"},{"startTime":585.96,"endTime":588.45,"body":"know, he's not really reducing"},{"startTime":588.45,"endTime":591.66,"body":"it that much. It's still a"},{"startTime":588.45,"endTime":591.66,"body":"pretty substantial work. By"},{"startTime":591.66,"endTime":594.54,"body":"today's standards. I think an"},{"startTime":591.66,"endTime":594.54,"body":"editor would pull his hair out"},{"startTime":594.54,"endTime":597.69,"body":"looking at Wow, it's a lot of"},{"startTime":594.54,"endTime":597.69,"body":"quotes. It's kind of tough to"},{"startTime":597.69,"endTime":601.98,"body":"read just a lot of other people."},{"startTime":597.69,"endTime":601.98,"body":"But as a resource, you know, he"},{"startTime":601.98,"endTime":605.13,"body":"was already been a historian of"},{"startTime":601.98,"endTime":605.13,"body":"preaching in a certain sense he"},{"startTime":605.13,"endTime":610.23,"body":"had it was a practical theology"},{"startTime":605.13,"endTime":610.23,"body":"book. But they saw practical"},{"startTime":610.23,"endTime":614.34,"body":"theology and historical theology"},{"startTime":610.23,"endTime":614.34,"body":"all rolled into one."},{"startTime":619.59,"endTime":621.63,"body":"And again, lost you there for a"},{"startTime":619.59,"endTime":621.63,"body":"second, but I think you're back"},{"startTime":621.63,"endTime":627.24,"body":"here. All right. Yeah. Good. So"},{"startTime":621.63,"endTime":627.24,"body":"I basically said though, he"},{"startTime":627.24,"endTime":632.67,"body":"rolled practical theology into"},{"startTime":627.24,"endTime":632.67,"body":"historical theology. And, and"},{"startTime":632.67,"endTime":635.04,"body":"maybe that's kind of lost. Maybe"},{"startTime":632.67,"endTime":635.04,"body":"we tried to divide that a lot"},{"startTime":635.04,"endTime":639.24,"body":"today. Is it practical? Or is it"},{"startTime":635.04,"endTime":639.24,"body":"historical? But really, it's all"},{"startTime":639.24,"endTime":642.27,"body":"interconnected? In my point of"},{"startTime":639.24,"endTime":642.27,"body":"view? Yeah,"},{"startTime":642.36,"endTime":649.56,"body":"absolutely. peeper very heavily"},{"startTime":642.36,"endTime":649.56,"body":"emphasized the heavily"},{"startTime":649.56,"endTime":654.18,"body":"emphasized the practical, the"},{"startTime":649.56,"endTime":654.18,"body":"practical nature of the of the"},{"startTime":654.18,"endTime":655.2,"body":"theology, right."},{"startTime":656.58,"endTime":659.94,"body":"Yeah. So what we're talking"},{"startTime":656.58,"endTime":659.94,"body":"about today is kind of two"},{"startTime":659.94,"endTime":664.11,"body":"projects of yours. The big one"},{"startTime":659.94,"endTime":664.11,"body":"is the translation of this"},{"startTime":664.11,"endTime":668.64,"body":"homiletics textbook.
