know, when you heard that we're preaching through the Ten Commandments, you hear Jason read that. 00:04:22.399 --> 00:04:27.279 You may be thinking this morning, hey, I've heard this sermon hundreds of times. 00:04:27.279 --> 00:04:28.800 I don't need to hear it again. 00:04:28.800 --> 00:04:30.800 Don't murder, don't lie, don't steal. 00:04:30.800 --> 00:04:34.959 You know, or maybe you're thinking, hey, does this really apply to me this morning? 00:04:34.959 --> 00:04:36.639 I don't have idols in my house. 00:04:36.639 --> 00:04:39.600 I don't kiss a little Buddha before I come to church on Sunday. 00:04:39.600 --> 00:04:41.040 Uh I pay my taxes. 00:04:41.040 --> 00:04:42.560 I'm a decent husband. 00:04:42.560 --> 00:04:43.759 I'm a decent wife. 00:04:43.759 --> 00:04:48.959 You know, I'm a pretty good kid most of the time, or I'm a good student majority of the time. 00:04:48.959 --> 00:04:51.120 You know, I don't have other gods before God. 00:04:51.120 --> 00:04:52.800 You know, what are you gonna share with me? 00:04:52.800 --> 00:04:56.000 Or maybe you're thinking, hey, here we go again. 00:04:56.000 --> 00:05:00.000 You're gonna start beating me up with all the things that I fail at. 00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:05.360 Tell me everything I'm doing wrong, and then send me home and say, hey, go try harder. 00:05:05.360 --> 00:05:09.040 But that's not what Deuteronomy 5 is doing. 00:05:09.040 --> 00:05:13.519 This isn't that God restricts you. 00:05:13.519 --> 00:05:16.480 The sermon is that God actually frees you. 00:05:16.480 --> 00:05:20.160 Because the question isn't, will you serve a master? 00:05:20.160 --> 00:05:24.079 The question is, which master will you serve? 00:05:24.079 --> 00:05:28.639 Career, children, money, success, approval, comfort. 00:05:28.639 --> 00:05:37.199 Whatever you look to for identity, security, maybe significance, or even satisfaction will eventually enslave you. 00:05:37.199 --> 00:05:39.759 And Deuteronomy shows us why. 00:05:39.759 --> 00:05:42.800 You know, Israel knows what it means to be enslaved, right? 00:05:42.800 --> 00:05:50.560 They remember Egypt, they remember Pharaoh, they remember what it was like to live life belonging to someone who never let them stop. 00:05:50.560 --> 00:05:53.680 But then God rescued them. 00:05:53.680 --> 00:06:01.040 And in Deuteronomy 5, God is essentially saying, You are not Pharaoh's people anymore. 00:06:01.040 --> 00:06:07.040 You have been redeemed, and that changes everything. 00:06:07.040 --> 00:06:10.879 Here's the problem that we tend to bring into this passage. 00:06:10.879 --> 00:06:17.680 We often see God's law as restrictive and burdensome rather than life-giving and freeing. 00:06:17.680 --> 00:06:27.600 We think God's commands are keeping us from freedom when in reality God is teaching redeemed people how you actually live free. 00:06:27.600 --> 00:06:31.120 That's why Deuteronomy 5 is so relevant for us today. 00:06:31.120 --> 00:06:42.560 The Ten Commandments aren't simply a list of rules for us to keep, but they show us what life looks like when people have been rescued by God and now belong to Him. 00:06:42.560 --> 00:06:46.399 So here's the message of Deuteronomy 5. 00:06:46.399 --> 00:06:51.920 Redeemed people listen to their Redeemer and live like they are free. 00:06:51.920 --> 00:06:59.439 And so the question I hope that you'll wrestle with today isn't simply, do I know the Ten Commandments? 00:06:59.439 --> 00:07:06.480 Here's the better question: What has the gospel actually reordered in my life? 00:07:06.480 --> 00:07:18.000 Because if the gospel is true, if Christ has actually redeemed us, then redemption should change the way that we listen, the way that we love, and the way that we live. 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:23.120 Deuteronomy 5 is taking us through the reordering of our lives. 00:07:23.120 --> 00:07:26.160 And that happens when we understand what God has done for us. 00:07:26.160 --> 00:07:32.480 So if you have your Bible or if you have your device, go ahead and turn with me to Deuteronomy 5, and we're gonna begin in verse 1. 00:07:32.480 --> 00:07:42.000 And as we walk through this passage, we'll we'll be able to, we're not gonna be able to dive deep into each commandment, but what I hope you'll see are kind of three movements through this passage. 00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:44.800 First, listen to the Redeemer. 00:07:44.800 --> 00:07:52.000 Second, love the Redeemer, and finally, live like the Redeemed. 00:07:52.000 --> 00:07:58.240 Deuteronomy 5 isn't primarily giving Israel information that they've never heard before, right? 00:07:58.240 --> 00:08:04.639 Moses is showing a new generation what redeemed people look like when they actually live like they belong to God. 00:08:04.639 --> 00:08:06.800 So let's begin with our first movement. 00:08:06.800 --> 00:08:08.160 Listen to the Redeemer. 00:08:08.160 --> 00:08:09.759 Look with me in verse 1. 00:08:09.759 --> 00:08:22.240 Verse 1, and Moses summoned all of Israel and said to them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today, and you shall learn them and be careful to do them. 00:08:22.240 --> 00:08:23.839 Now this is important. 00:08:23.839 --> 00:08:27.519 Hear, O Israel, this isn't just a poetic way of speaking. 00:08:27.519 --> 00:08:31.600 Moses isn't saying, hey, hey, come listen to an interesting sermon. 00:08:31.600 --> 00:08:40.399 Moses is saying, listen in such a way that what you hear changes how you live. 00:08:40.399 --> 00:08:46.879 You see, we see in the verse, hear, then learn and be careful to do them. 00:08:46.879 --> 00:08:49.360 And that's our encouragement this morning. 00:08:49.360 --> 00:08:57.519 Hey, let's come together and listen in a way that what we hear changes how we actually live our day-to-day lives. 00:08:57.519 --> 00:08:59.679 Look down in verse 2. 00:08:59.679 --> 00:09:02.240 The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. 00:09:02.240 --> 00:09:09.039 Not with our fathers did the Lord make this covenant, but with us who are all of us here alive today. 00:09:09.039 --> 00:09:11.600 Notice something remarkable here. 00:09:11.600 --> 00:09:14.639 Moses says, the Lord made this covenant with us. 00:09:14.639 --> 00:09:20.159 Now remember, the people standing before him, this was not the exact generation at Sinai. 00:09:20.159 --> 00:09:22.240 Ben shared this a couple of weeks ago. 00:09:22.240 --> 00:09:25.519 Moses, though, brings the covenant into the present. 00:09:25.519 --> 00:09:30.960 He says, Hey, what God did for their fathers actually becomes their story. 00:09:30.960 --> 00:09:35.120 Moses even goes further to say, hey, this was not with your fathers. 00:09:35.120 --> 00:09:37.679 This is with you here, right now. 00:09:37.679 --> 00:09:42.240 The redemptive work, God's redemptive work becomes their identity. 00:09:42.240 --> 00:09:47.759 The covenant was made with them before some of them were even born. 00:09:47.759 --> 00:09:50.960 And Moses is saying, hey, that was with you. 00:09:50.960 --> 00:09:55.440 The gospel isn't God did something back then on the cross. 00:09:55.440 --> 00:10:00.879 The gospel is God's redemptive work becomes your identity today, here and now. 00:10:00.879 --> 00:10:09.840 Moses goes on into verse 4, and he says, The Lord spoke with you face to face at the mountain, out of the midst of the fire, while I stood between the Lord and you. 00:10:09.840 --> 00:10:13.759 And I want you to notice the emphasis on a relationship there. 00:10:13.759 --> 00:10:17.039 God speaks face to face with his people. 00:10:17.039 --> 00:10:27.440 The law comes from a covenant Lord who entered into a relationship with his people through a mediator, pointing to someone we will land with today. 00:10:27.440 --> 00:10:31.440 And look where our response comes from in verse 6. 00:10:31.440 --> 00:10:36.399 This is the crucial theological foundation to what we're studying this morning. 00:10:36.399 --> 00:10:42.240 I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 00:10:42.240 --> 00:10:44.399 Notice what comes first there. 00:10:44.399 --> 00:10:45.600 I am God. 00:10:45.600 --> 00:10:50.240 I redeemed you, therefore live as my people. 00:10:50.240 --> 00:10:53.519 Grace precedes obedience. 00:10:53.519 --> 00:10:57.679 Grateful obedience is the response to being rescued. 00:10:57.679 --> 00:11:03.679 The gospel pattern is God rescues, God speaks, God's people respond. 00:11:03.679 --> 00:11:08.000 Israel's obedience doesn't create the relationship with God. 00:11:08.000 --> 00:11:10.000 Redemption creates the relationship. 00:11:10.000 --> 00:11:13.759 God doesn't say, hey, keep these commandments and I'll rescue you from Egypt. 00:11:13.759 --> 00:11:15.840 He says, I rescued you from Egypt. 00:11:15.840 --> 00:11:17.120 Now hear me. 00:11:17.120 --> 00:11:18.559 This is for your good. 00:11:18.559 --> 00:11:22.720 Let me teach you how redeemed people are to live. 00:11:22.720 --> 00:11:28.720 Let me share a story with you about a man named Jed, a poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed. 00:11:28.720 --> 00:11:30.480 And then one day he was shooting at some food. 00:11:30.480 --> 00:11:31.279 No, I'm just kidding. 00:11:31.279 --> 00:11:32.960 But I'm going to use Jed as an example. 00:11:32.960 --> 00:11:34.559 So if your name's Jed, I'm sorry. 00:11:34.559 --> 00:11:36.159 But Jed, he's successful. 00:11:36.159 --> 00:11:37.039 He has a good career. 00:11:37.039 --> 00:11:38.320 He makes good money. 00:11:38.320 --> 00:11:39.840 He provides well for his family. 00:11:39.840 --> 00:11:41.360 He's respected. 00:11:41.360 --> 00:11:44.960 But Jed checks his email before he gets out of bed. 00:11:44.960 --> 00:11:47.440 He's answering messages at dinner. 00:11:47.440 --> 00:11:50.480 He's thinking about work while playing with his kids. 00:11:50.480 --> 00:11:54.240 He takes vacation, but he's never really on vacation. 00:11:54.240 --> 00:11:57.679 He's not working nine to five, what a way to make a living. 00:11:57.679 --> 00:11:59.759 But he is working eight to eight. 00:11:59.759 --> 00:12:02.000 Thank you, somebody that got the Dolly reference. 00:12:02.000 --> 00:12:03.679 Had to, sorry. 00:12:03.679 --> 00:12:10.240 Each time he reaches his next goal, he's thinking, finally, I'm able to relax. 00:12:10.240 --> 00:12:12.320 But he doesn't. 00:12:12.320 --> 00:12:16.559 Eventually, someone says, Hey, hey, Jed, how much would be enough? 00:12:16.559 --> 00:12:20.080 And Jed realizes, I don't know. 00:12:20.080 --> 00:12:33.519 Because underneath all of his work is a belief or an internal script that says, hey, if I work hard enough, if I provide enough, if I accomplish enough, maybe one day I'll finally be okay. 00:12:33.519 --> 00:12:38.559 His work isn't just something he does anymore. 00:12:38.559 --> 00:12:41.519 His work is becoming something that owns him. 00:12:41.519 --> 00:12:50.320 And the question for us is, what would happen, what would have to happen today for you to say, hey, now I'm enough? 00:12:50.320 --> 00:12:54.320 Whose approval do you need? 00:12:54.320 --> 00:12:59.840 See, because the answer to those questions will begin to expose our own Egypt. 00:12:59.840 --> 00:13:07.440 Now listen, God doesn't just rescue Israel from Pharaoh, He rescues them for Himself. 00:13:07.440 --> 00:13:13.679 He frees them from the master who enslaved them so that they can belong to the God who redeemed them. 00:13:13.679 --> 00:13:18.080 And so God shows them what freedom really looks like through the Ten Commandments. 00:13:18.080 --> 00:13:21.519 And Jesus, he helps us understand and see the heart of the commandments. 00:13:21.519 --> 00:13:26.799 When Jesus summarizes the law, he doesn't begin with this long list of rules. 00:13:26.799 --> 00:13:28.480 He begins with love. 00:13:28.480 --> 00:13:34.960 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and then love your neighbor as yourself. 00:13:34.960 --> 00:13:38.639 And that's exactly the movement that we'll see here in Deuteronomy 5. 00:13:38.639 --> 00:13:40.159 Because God has redeemed us. 00:13:40.159 --> 00:13:44.799 We don't just stop serving our old masters, but we love our Redeemer. 00:13:44.799 --> 00:13:47.840 And so look, our second point, love the Redeemer. 00:13:47.840 --> 00:13:49.120 Verse 7. 00:13:49.120 --> 00:13:52.320 You shall have no other gods before me. 00:13:52.320 --> 00:13:57.840 You know, Jed doesn't have a little statue on his desk, but Jed does have a God. 00:13:57.840 --> 00:14:00.480 His God is achievement. 00:14:00.480 --> 00:14:01.600 Why? 00:14:01.600 --> 00:14:05.120 Because achievement gives him something he wants from God. 00:14:05.120 --> 00:14:07.279 Tell me I'm valuable. 00:14:07.279 --> 00:14:09.120 Tell me I matter. 00:14:09.120 --> 00:14:11.200 And that's what an idol does. 00:14:11.200 --> 00:14:14.240 An idol isn't merely something that you worship. 00:14:14.240 --> 00:14:20.559 An idol is something that you ask to give you what only God can give you. 00:14:20.559 --> 00:14:24.159 Jed asks his career, tell me I'm significant. 00:14:24.159 --> 00:14:25.679 Tell me I matter. 00:14:25.679 --> 00:14:27.679 Someone else asks a relationship. 00:14:27.679 --> 00:14:29.840 Hey, tell me I'm lovable. 00:14:29.840 --> 00:14:33.039 Someone else asks money, hey, tell me I'm secure. 00:14:33.039 --> 00:14:36.480 Someone else asks their children, hey, tell me I'm successful. 00:14:36.480 --> 00:14:40.960 And God says, You shall have no other gods before me. 00:14:40.960 --> 00:14:45.039 This is fundamentally about exclusive allegiance. 00:14:45.039 --> 00:14:48.720 You know, the issue isn't merely believing that other gods exist. 00:14:48.720 --> 00:14:55.039 The issue is that Israel must have one God, one allegiance, one Lord. 00:14:55.039 --> 00:15:01.200 Then verse 8, you shall not make a carved image, make for yourself a carved image. 00:15:01.200 --> 00:15:05.600 The second commandment moves from who we worship to how we worship. 00:15:05.600 --> 00:15:07.919 Israel cannot domesticate God. 00:15:07.919 --> 00:15:11.279 They cannot make God into something manageable, visible, controllable. 00:15:11.279 --> 00:15:17.919 And then notice in verse 9, you shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God. 00:15:17.919 --> 00:15:19.840 God says, hey, I'm jealous. 00:15:19.840 --> 00:15:24.240 And we kind of think in human terms of jealousy, and we're kind of like, oh, wait a minute, we don't like that. 00:15:24.240 --> 00:15:29.919 But God's jealousy isn't insecurity, it's covenant love. 00:15:29.919 --> 00:15:37.039 See, God refuses to share his people with the very things that enslaved them. 00:15:37.039 --> 00:15:39.440 That's his jealousy. 00:15:39.440 --> 00:15:44.720 Then look at verse 11: You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. 00:15:44.720 --> 00:15:52.639 The third commandment is taking God's name in a way that is emptiness, worthlessness, or even falsehood. 00:15:52.639 --> 00:15:56.000 It's not merely, hey, do you use God's name as a swear word? 00:15:56.000 --> 00:15:57.759 Though don't do that. 00:15:57.759 --> 00:16:03.679 But it is, does the way you live make God's name look empty? 00:16:03.679 --> 00:16:11.360 The command concerns how God's people carry God's name into the world. 00:16:11.360 --> 00:16:11.919 Right? 00:16:11.919 --> 00:16:15.759 Last week Ben asked, what kind of God produces people like this? 00:16:15.759 --> 00:16:18.320 And then he he gave us some things of how those people look. 00:16:18.320 --> 00:16:22.960 They embody a wisdom that is attractive, they seem to know the way to the good life. 00:16:22.960 --> 00:16:27.919 Or in the language of chapter 4, surely this is a wise and understanding people. 00:16:27.919 --> 00:16:32.799 Those are people who do not make God's name look empty. 00:16:32.799 --> 00:16:36.320 They live like the redeemed. 00:16:36.320 --> 00:16:39.039 Now look at verse 12 quickly. 00:16:39.039 --> 00:16:43.600 Observe the Sabbath day to keep it holy as the Lord your God commanded you. 00:16:43.600 --> 00:16:47.120 Six days you shall work, seventh day you shall take a rest, right? 00:16:47.120 --> 00:16:54.960 The Sabbath command here is particularly interesting because Deuteronomy changes the emphasis from Exodus 20. 00:16:54.960 --> 00:16:59.519 Exodus 20 emphasizes creation for the reason that they take the Sabbath seriously. 00:16:59.519 --> 00:17:01.519 Listen to the words from Exodus 20. 00:17:01.519 --> 00:17:08.960 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. 00:17:08.960 --> 00:17:12.720 Therefore, the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. 00:17:12.720 --> 00:17:16.240 Deuteronomy changes the emphasis, though, to redemption. 00:17:16.240 --> 00:17:18.400 Look down in verse 15. 00:17:18.400 --> 00:17:27.759 You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. 00:17:27.759 --> 00:17:32.799 Therefore, the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. 00:17:32.799 --> 00:17:38.319 Israel rests because they are no longer Pharaoh's people. 00:17:38.319 --> 00:17:39.920 They are no longer slaves. 00:17:39.920 --> 00:17:44.240 And this gives the Sabbath a deeply gospel-shaped theology. 00:17:44.240 --> 00:17:46.000 Slaves don't get to stop. 00:17:46.000 --> 00:17:49.440 Like when they were living in Egypt, they didn't get to stop. 00:17:49.440 --> 00:17:51.519 Redeemed people, though, can rest. 00:17:51.519 --> 00:17:53.759 And that's important for us to grasp today. 00:17:53.759 --> 00:17:58.880 Jesus came to set us free from the very things that enslave us. 00:17:58.880 --> 00:18:05.039 I wonder this morning where your heart is when you hear more bricks, less straw. 00:18:05.039 --> 00:18:09.440 Pharaoh's command to Egypt, to Israel. 00:18:09.440 --> 00:18:14.160 We get so focused on go, go, on more, more, more, more. 00:18:14.160 --> 00:18:17.200 And God says, Hey, I rescued you. 00:18:17.200 --> 00:18:18.319 Rest. 00:18:18.319 --> 00:18:20.799 Like, slow down a little bit. 00:18:20.799 --> 00:18:24.000 And this isn't simply, hey, go take a day off. 00:18:24.000 --> 00:18:31.440 This is you are no longer Pharaoh's slaves, so don't live as though Pharaoh still owns you. 00:18:31.440 --> 00:18:34.799 That leads to our final point. 00:18:34.799 --> 00:18:36.400 Live like the redeemed. 00:18:36.400 --> 00:18:40.799 If God has rescued you from Pharaoh, then don't live as though Pharaoh still owns you. these commands, they don't simply give us a list of things to do, but hopefully they begin to expose us. 00:20:39.359 --> 00:20:44.079 They expose what is happening underneath our behavior in our on the Ten Commandments and how they lead us to Christ gives us some a different number of things that lead us there, and I'm just going to touch a few of those. 00:21:46.000 --> 00:21:49.119 The Ten 00:22:20.559 Where Israel failed, Jesus succeeds. 00:22:20.559 --> 00:22:24.480 Where Israel grumbled in the wilderness, Jesus trusted his father. 00:22:24.480 --> 00:22:26.960 Where Israel tested God, Jesus obeyed God. 00:22:26.960 --> 00:22:30.799 Where Israel worshipped other gods, Jesus worshiped the Father alone. 00:22:30.799 --> 00:22:34.799 And when Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, where did Jesus go? 00:22:34.799 --> 00:22:36.559 To Deuteronomy. 00:22:36.559 --> 00:22:42.480 He answers Satan with the very word of God that Israel failed to obey. 00:22:42.480 --> 00:22:45.680 Jesus is the obedient son. 00:22:45.680 --> 00:22:49.599 He is the one who perfectly hears God's word and does it. 00:22:49.599 --> 00:22:55.440 Jesus can say in John 8.29, I always do the things that are pleasing to him. 00:22:55.440 --> 00:22:58.240 I can't say that. 00:22:58.240 --> 00:22:59.519 I'm guessing you can't. 00:22:59.519 --> 00:23:01.920 Israel couldn't, but Jesus could. 00:23:01.920 --> 00:23:09.440 The Ten Commandments give us a picture of righteousness, and Jesus is that righteousness in the flesh. 00:23:09.440 --> 00:23:15.039 And Christ is not merely someone the law points toward, Christ is the substance of the very law. 00:23:15.039 --> 00:23:18.799 The Ten Commandments then show us our need for Christ. 00:23:18.799 --> 00:23:21.359 Something happens when we look at the law, right? 00:23:21.359 --> 00:23:22.480 It becomes a mirror. 00:23:22.480 --> 00:23:26.640 And when we honestly look at the mirror, we don't see ourselves looking more like Jesus. 00:23:26.640 --> 00:23:28.559 We begin to see our sin. 00:23:28.559 --> 00:23:34.480 The commandment says you shall have no other gods, and we realize we put other things in God's place. 00:23:34.480 --> 00:23:43.440 The commandment says you shall not covet, and we realize, hey, sometimes what we don't have controls us more than what we do have. 00:23:43.440 --> 00:23:50.559 The law exposes us, and that's good news because the law isn't saying, hey, you're bad, try harder. 00:23:50.559 --> 00:23:56.799 It is saying you're enslaved and you need a savior to rescue you. 00:23:56.799 --> don't need to possess everything that I've been programmed to believe that will make me happy. 00:28:42.559 --> 00:28:48.559 God says, keep the Sabbath, the Christian says, I don't have to prove my worth through endless productivity. 00:28:48.559 --> 00:28:51.279 Christ has already finished the work. 00:28:51.279 --> 00:28:57.680 Obedience becomes gratitude, not payment, not performance, not
