How successful was that?"},{"speaker":"Steve Roe","startTime":147.96,"endTime":150.72,"body":"And what are the plans to move"},{"speaker":"Steve Roe","startTime":150.72,"endTime":152.01,"body":"that forward into the future?"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":152.0,"endTime":155.81,"body":"Yes, so the idea"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":152.0,"endTime":155.81,"body":"behind this project was more"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":155.81,"endTime":160.37,"body":"successful than I think we could"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":155.81,"endTime":160.37,"body":"have imagined at the start. We"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":160.37,"endTime":163.13,"body":"were very fortunate to get that"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":160.37,"endTime":163.13,"body":"project, which we ran in"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":163.13,"endTime":168.5,"body":"partnership with the NBN trust"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":163.13,"endTime":168.5,"body":"and Field Studies Council as"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":168.5,"endTime":172.49,"body":"well. And obviously very"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":168.5,"endTime":172.49,"body":"generously sponsored by the"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":172.73,"endTime":176.84,"body":"Heritage Lottery Fund, through"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":172.73,"endTime":176.84,"body":"their skills, skills for the"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":176.84,"endTime":183.47,"body":"future projects. And out of that"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":176.84,"endTime":183.47,"body":"project, we generated 15"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":183.5,"endTime":188.18,"body":"individuals who had each been"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":183.5,"endTime":188.18,"body":"with museum for a year training"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":188.18,"endTime":192.71,"body":"with top experts, I was gonna"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":188.18,"endTime":192.71,"body":"say in the UK, but actually in"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":192.71,"endTime":195.98,"body":"the world, around identification"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":192.71,"endTime":195.98,"body":"skills, both in the lab and in"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":195.98,"endTime":199.16,"body":"the field working with"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":195.98,"endTime":199.16,"body":"specimens. And each trainee got"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":199.16,"endTime":202.61,"body":"to spend three months working in"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":199.16,"endTime":202.61,"body":"their particular interest area,"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":202.82,"endTime":206.03,"body":"which was just such a unique"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":202.82,"endTime":206.03,"body":"opportunity for them. But the"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":206.03,"endTime":208.82,"body":"lovely thing with that project"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":206.03,"endTime":208.82,"body":"is we were able to train them in"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":208.82,"endTime":212.87,"body":"communication skills. And that's"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":208.82,"endTime":212.87,"body":"really the biggest success out"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":212.87,"endTime":217.85,"body":"of the project. We've generated"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":212.87,"endTime":217.85,"body":"15 Amazing people with great"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":217.85,"endTime":221.45,"body":"identification skills across"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":217.85,"endTime":221.45,"body":"across a wealth of taxa. But"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":221.45,"endTime":224.9,"body":"they are all such good"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":221.45,"endTime":224.9,"body":"communicators in written form in"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":224.9,"endTime":228.02,"body":"verbal form. Many of them are"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":224.9,"endTime":228.02,"body":"running workshops and their own"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":228.02,"endTime":230.57,"body":"training courses, or they're"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":228.02,"endTime":230.57,"body":"working on projects where"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":230.57,"endTime":234.29,"body":"they're actively engaging people"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":230.57,"endTime":234.29,"body":"with natural history skills. And"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":234.29,"endTime":238.1,"body":"that's exactly what we wanted it"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":234.29,"endTime":238.1,"body":"to do. Those people can go off."},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":238.13,"endTime":241.13,"body":"And I mean, essentially, I guess"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":238.13,"endTime":241.13,"body":"you could imagine it as the"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":241.13,"endTime":244.58,"body":"pyramid scheme of identification"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":241.13,"endTime":244.58,"body":"skills. We've trained up those"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":244.61,"endTime":248.54,"body":"15 people, they can then go off"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":244.61,"endTime":248.54,"body":"and train so many more across"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":248.54,"endTime":251.51,"body":"the rest of their careers. And"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":248.54,"endTime":251.51,"body":"they are all out there doing"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":251.51,"endTime":255.11,"body":"exactly that. Some of them still"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":251.51,"endTime":255.11,"body":"working at the museum. We've got"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":255.11,"endTime":261.5,"body":"people in Natural England, in"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":255.11,"endTime":261.5,"body":"wildlife trusts in, in various"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":261.5,"endTime":265.43,"body":"charities across the country,"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":261.5,"endTime":265.43,"body":"and working privately as well."},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":265.73,"endTime":269.06,"body":"And I'm just so impressed with"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":265.73,"endTime":269.06,"body":"everything they've done with all"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":269.06,"endTime":270.5,"body":"the opportunities that we gave"},{"speaker":"Steph West","startTime":269.06,"endTime":270.5,"body":"them."},{"speaker":"Steve Roe","startTime":270.78,"endTime":272.46,"body":"And what is it that"},{"speaker":"Steve Roe","startTime":270.78,"endTime":272.46,"body":"makes you think training the"},{"speaker":"Steve Roe","startTime":272.46,"endTime":275.13,"body":"next generation preparing for"},{"speaker":"Steve Roe","startTime":272.46,"endTime":275.13,"body":"wildlife is so important."},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":276.29,"endTime":280.61,"body":"identification skills"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":276.29,"endTime":280.61,"body":"are something that a lot of"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":280.61,"endTime":284.69,"body":"people kind of forget about in"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":280.61,"endTime":284.69,"body":"conservation, and I've worked in"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":284.72,"endTime":287.51,"body":"various different guises"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":284.72,"endTime":287.51,"body":"throughout ecology in the UK"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":287.51,"endTime":292.61,"body":"over the years now. And"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":287.51,"endTime":292.61,"body":"identification skills seem to be"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":292.61,"endTime":295.67,"body":"the one thing that a lot of"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":292.61,"endTime":295.67,"body":"people miss particularly for the"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":295.67,"endTime":297.86,"body":"tricky things particularly for"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":295.67,"endTime":297.86,"body":"invertebrates because they're"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":297.86,"endTime":300.62,"body":"hard to do. They're really"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":297.86,"endTime":300.62,"body":"difficult there aren't many"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":300.62,"endTime":304.34,"body":"people with that skills and that"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":300.62,"endTime":304.34,"body":"knowledge and often the texts,"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":304.37,"endTime":308.3,"body":"they feel keys and things like"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":304.37,"endTime":308.3,"body":"that are verging from non"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":308.3,"endTime":313.37,"body":"existent to terrible in some"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":308.3,"endTime":313.37,"body":"cases, and that makes it really"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":313.37,"endTime":316.28,"body":"inaccessible. But in terms of"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":313.37,"endTime":316.28,"body":"conservation, and one of the"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":316.28,"endTime":318.98,"body":"underlying principles is you"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":316.28,"endTime":318.98,"body":"can't conserve what you don't"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":318.98,"endTime":321.86,"body":"know is there you need to be"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":318.98,"endTime":321.86,"body":"able to identify things, and"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":321.86,"endTime":325.46,"body":"understand how those"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":321.86,"endTime":325.46,"body":"relationships between things in"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":325.46,"endTime":328.61,"body":"the ecosystems actually work."},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":325.46,"endTime":328.61,"body":"That's how that's the basic"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":328.61,"endTime":331.7,"body":"underlying principle of"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":328.61,"endTime":331.7,"body":"conservation, if we lose those"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":331.7,"endTime":335.87,"body":"skills, and let's face it, we've"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":331.7,"endTime":335.87,"body":"said for many years now that you"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":335.87,"endTime":340.01,"body":"know, our taxonomists are"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":335.87,"endTime":340.01,"body":"essentially an ageing"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":340.01,"endTime":343.58,"body":"population. And there was so much"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":389.37,"endTime":393.75,"body":"enthusiasm for it, but also a"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":389.37,"endTime":393.75,"body":"confusion about where to start."},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":394.35,"endTime":397.62,"body":"And I think what we need to do"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":394.35,"endTime":397.62,"body":"is to work on making those"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":397.62,"endTime":401.79,"body":"skills accessible, through"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":397.62,"endTime":401.79,"body":"things like better ID guides and"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":401.79,"endTime":405.06,"body":"through making training,"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":401.79,"endTime":405.06,"body":"accessible and affordable for"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":405.06,"endTime":409.44,"body":"people to be able to get to, and"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":405.06,"endTime":409.44,"body":"through just showing that that"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":409.44,"endTime":412.68,"body":"love and that passion doesn't"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":409.44,"endTime":412.68,"body":"need to go away. When you are"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":412.68,"endTime":415.23,"body":"attending, you tend to log over"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":412.68,"endTime":415.23,"body":"and you got excited about all"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":415.23,"endTime":418.35,"body":"the things going around"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":415.23,"endTime":418.35,"body":"underneath it.
