I grew up in a"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":156.48,"endTime":160.11,"body":"snowy place in Idaho and was a"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":156.48,"endTime":160.11,"body":"ski racer. And along the way"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":160.11,"endTime":162.84,"body":"discovered the sport of biathlon"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":160.11,"endTime":162.84,"body":"where you where you do cross"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":162.84,"endTime":165.87,"body":"country skiing and shoot guns"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":162.84,"endTime":165.87,"body":"super fun, a lot more fun than"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":165.87,"endTime":170.19,"body":"just skiing. And I was pretty"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":165.87,"endTime":170.19,"body":"good at it became, you know,"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":170.19,"endTime":174.6,"body":"quite good at it and made my way"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":170.19,"endTime":174.6,"body":"out to the US team, which led to"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":174.6,"endTime":179.37,"body":"the me being on a 1984 US"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":174.6,"endTime":179.37,"body":"Olympic team. That was when"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":179.37,"endTime":182.19,"body":"Russia was bad. And I guess it"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":179.37,"endTime":182.19,"body":"still is bad. But that was one"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":182.19,"endTime":184.5,"body":"of the Iron Curtain was out"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":182.19,"endTime":184.5,"body":"there and the Olympics were in"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":184.5,"endTime":187.41,"body":"Syria, but Yugoslavia on the"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":184.5,"endTime":187.41,"body":"other side and pretty cool place"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":187.41,"endTime":191.88,"body":"to go in those days and really a"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":187.41,"endTime":191.88,"body":"neat experience in my life. So"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":191.88,"endTime":196.65,"body":"that was 1984 I was a college, I"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":191.88,"endTime":196.65,"body":"don't know, sophomore. So,"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":196.98,"endTime":204.48,"body":"Junior, something like that. And"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":196.98,"endTime":204.48,"body":"in in 85 you know, we were"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":204.48,"endTime":207.18,"body":"carrying at the time these these"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":204.48,"endTime":207.18,"body":"fairly heavy rifles, they were"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":207.18,"endTime":210.72,"body":"on target rifles, really cool,"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":207.18,"endTime":210.72,"body":"you know, precision rifles, but"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":211.11,"endTime":215.07,"body":"pretty heavy. People thought at"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":211.11,"endTime":215.07,"body":"the time that you had to have a"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":215.07,"endTime":219.48,"body":"heavy gun to shoot when you're"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":215.07,"endTime":219.48,"body":"standing there on snow and in"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":219.48,"endTime":226.08,"body":"lycra tights. You know, we had"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":219.48,"endTime":226.08,"body":"these 11 and a half pound target"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":226.08,"endTime":228.9,"body":"rifles, but they broke really"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":226.08,"endTime":228.9,"body":"easily if you fell on them. And"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":228.9,"endTime":231.3,"body":"we fell once in a while no"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":228.9,"endTime":231.3,"body":"matter how good a skier you were"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":231.3,"endTime":235.62,"body":"in certain conditions, you know,"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":231.3,"endTime":235.62,"body":"you didn't take a header and if"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":235.62,"endTime":238.53,"body":"you felt that the rifle is"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":235.62,"endTime":238.53,"body":"typically broken half and so"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":239.31,"endTime":242.13,"body":"having done that and been a poor"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":239.31,"endTime":242.13,"body":"college kid, I decided to try to"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":242.13,"endTime":245.79,"body":"make a better rifle stock. That"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":242.13,"endTime":245.79,"body":"led me to take a lot of weight"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":245.79,"endTime":249.84,"body":"off the stock as well as making"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":245.79,"endTime":249.84,"body":"it stronger at so much so that"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":249.84,"endTime":252.99,"body":"it made a significant difference"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":249.84,"endTime":252.99,"body":"in how fast we can see when I"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":252.99,"endTime":256.77,"body":"say we know before long the"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":252.99,"endTime":256.77,"body":"whole US team was using them and"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":257.52,"endTime":261.36,"body":"and it really changed the sport"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":257.52,"endTime":261.36,"body":"in the 80s to the point where in"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":261.42,"endTime":264.18,"body":"1986 when we went to the World"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":261.42,"endTime":264.18,"body":"Championships with these new"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":264.18,"endTime":268.92,"body":"Everly stocks. We were"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":264.18,"endTime":268.92,"body":"substantially better in the"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":268.92,"endTime":272.34,"body":"rankings. And the Europeans were"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":268.92,"endTime":272.34,"body":"alarmed because they didn't have"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":272.34,"endTime":275.16,"body":"any like they could look at the"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":272.34,"endTime":275.16,"body":"overlays and their stocks and go"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":275.16,"endTime":282.87,"body":"holy shit like what the look"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":275.16,"endTime":282.87,"body":"what the Americans have. They"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":282.87,"endTime":285.45,"body":"accused us of cheating actually,"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":282.87,"endTime":285.45,"body":"they wrote a rule that said you"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":285.45,"endTime":287.52,"body":"can't use those things. And"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":285.45,"endTime":287.52,"body":"we're like, what do you mean"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":287.52,"endTime":290.07,"body":"those things? They said, well,"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":287.52,"endTime":290.07,"body":"you wrote a rule that said you"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":290.07,"endTime":293.85,"body":"can't use rifle socks that have"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":290.07,"endTime":293.85,"body":"holes in them. And so because"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":293.85,"endTime":297.09,"body":"mine were all skeletonized and"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":293.85,"endTime":297.09,"body":"whatnot, just a silly rule but"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":297.09,"endTime":299.49,"body":"they were just trying to"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":297.09,"endTime":299.49,"body":"eliminate what I had that they"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":299.49,"endTime":313.38,"body":"did not. So basically, we, you"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":299.49,"endTime":313.38,"body":"know, fought it off and and, and"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":313.41,"endTime":316.38,"body":"they finally realized that they"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":313.41,"endTime":316.38,"body":"were going to lose that argument"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":316.38,"endTime":319.29,"body":"and, and ultimately just asked"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":316.38,"endTime":319.29,"body":"me how much the thing weighed."},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":319.68,"endTime":323.01,"body":"And so instead of 11 and a half"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":319.68,"endTime":323.01,"body":"pounds, seven and a half pounds,"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":324.72,"endTime":327.96,"body":"four pounds off the gun, we can"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":324.72,"endTime":327.96,"body":"see over a minute faster in a 20"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":327.96,"endTime":331.83,"body":"kilometer race, which, you know,"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":327.96,"endTime":331.83,"body":"well, to put it in perspective,"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":331.83,"endTime":335.76,"body":"in 1987, an American won the"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":331.83,"endTime":335.76,"body":"first medal in the world"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":335.76,"endTime":339.48,"body":"championships, you know, and,"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":335.76,"endTime":339.48,"body":"and a guy named Josh Thompson"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":339.48,"endTime":342.45,"body":"and the 87, World Champion of"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":339.48,"endTime":342.45,"body":"got silver, and that had never"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":342.45,"endTime":344.82,"body":"happened. And since then, the"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":342.45,"endTime":344.82,"body":"American team has been"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":344.82,"endTime":348.69,"body":"contenders. I think a lot of it"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":344.82,"endTime":348.69,"body":"is because we, them in the"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":348.69,"endTime":351.09,"body":"stocks certainly help, but also"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":348.69,"endTime":351.09,"body":"we were a bunch of tough, you"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":351.09,"endTime":355.2,"body":"know, young athletes. And so a"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":351.09,"endTime":355.2,"body":"couple things were going on in"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":355.2,"endTime":358.56,"body":"the 80s. One is the playing"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":355.2,"endTime":358.56,"body":"field wasn't level we were"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":358.56,"endTime":362.4,"body":"fighting against cheating,"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":358.56,"endTime":362.4,"body":"European, you know, doping"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":362.4,"endTime":367.2,"body":"programs and Russian, you know,"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":362.4,"endTime":367.2,"body":"and East German med programs"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":367.2,"endTime":369.63,"body":"that we didn't have, we were"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":367.2,"endTime":369.63,"body":"always poor, poor college kids."},{"speaker":"Aaron","startTime":370.05,"endTime":371.97,"body":"It's always the East"},{"speaker":"Aaron","startTime":370.05,"endTime":371.97,"body":"Germans, isn't it? So there were there"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":381.32,"endTime":384.08,"body":"was, you know, doping is felt"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":384.08,"endTime":386.12,"body":"like the Tour de France"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":384.08,"endTime":386.12,"body":"everybody was doing except for"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":386.12,"endTime":388.97,"body":"the Americans in this case"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":386.12,"endTime":388.97,"body":"worn't. We were pretty honest."},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":389.0,"endTime":392.78,"body":"And, and but the you know, the"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":389.0,"endTime":392.78,"body":"stocks were a secret weapon. And"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":392.78,"endTime":396.23,"body":"they definitely put us into the"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":392.78,"endTime":396.23,"body":"contention there for a while."},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":396.23,"endTime":399.86,"body":"And then eventually, that rule"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":396.23,"endTime":399.86,"body":"was written that said that, that"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":399.86,"endTime":403.55,"body":"no, biathlon rifle stock could"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":399.86,"endTime":403.55,"body":"be lighter than seven and a half"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":403.55,"endTime":407.63,"body":"pounds my number. And, and so"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":403.55,"endTime":407.63,"body":"now, virtually everybody in the"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":407.63,"endTime":411.14,"body":"world uses a rifle that light,"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":407.63,"endTime":411.14,"body":"but the Americans are still in"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":411.26,"endTime":414.53,"body":"contention, because most of"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":411.26,"endTime":414.53,"body":"those doping programs that we"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":414.53,"endTime":417.53,"body":"were competing against have been"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":414.53,"endTime":417.53,"body":"shut down for one, but then for"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":417.53,"endTime":420.38,"body":"two, you know, there's something"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":417.53,"endTime":420.38,"body":"psychologically about getting in"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":420.38,"endTime":422.96,"body":"there. Once you're in there, you"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":420.38,"endTime":422.96,"body":"want to stay in there, and the"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":422.96,"endTime":426.47,"body":"team generally has that more"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":422.96,"endTime":426.47,"body":"competitive, you know, in the"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":426.47,"endTime":430.34,"body":"game mentality now since, so, I"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":426.47,"endTime":430.34,"body":"had a lot to do at the start of"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":430.34,"endTime":431.87,"body":"that. So that was a long time"},{"speaker":"Glen","startTime":430.34,"endTime":431.87,"body":"ago."},{"speaker":"Aaron","startTime":432.56,"endTime":436.28,"body":"Well, that's pretty"},{"speaker":"Aaron","startTime":432.56,"endTime":436.28,"body":"funny, too.
