Jungle School - Ep 615
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Aaron, Trent, and Peaches sit down with Justus, a Security Forces airman out of Moody Air Force Base, to talk about one of the nastiest, coolest, and most under-discussed opportunities in the Air Force: jungle warfare training in Panama.
Justus walks through how he ended up in the Air Force, why Security Forces was not what he expected, and how a career field that gets roasted constantly can still open doors if you are fit, positive, prepared, and willing to say yes when opportunities show up.
He breaks down life in Security Forces, deploying to Prince Sultan Air Base, supporting the F-22 demo team, competing in Defender Challenge, and eventually getting to the 820th Base Defense Group at Moody — a unit built around defending and opening forward air bases in contested environments.
Then the episode gets into the real reason he is here: Panama Jungle School.
We talk tents, heat, humidity, malaria meds, mosquitoes, botflies, leaf cutter ants, black palm, trench foot, dysentery, wet boots, wet uniforms, and the harsh reality that the jungle itself is usually the hardest enemy. Justus explains the combat water survival assessment, jungle 5K, knot tests, survival phase, food and water procurement, firecraft, shelter building, rope systems, Z-pulley, one-rope bridge, jungle tactics, and the final Green Mile.
The best part? He is not bitter, negative, or trying to scare anyone away. His message is simple: Security Forces has opportunities everywhere, but you have to be ready when they appear. Be in shape. Ask questions. Find the people doing hard things. Say yes.
If you are in Security Forces, stop telling yourself the job is just gates and patrol cars. There is more out there. Go find it.
