SPEAKER_01All right, hey Logan.
SPEAKER_00What's up, Abigail?
SPEAKER_01Um, we are here to talk about uh specifically one word, but like it means a lot of different things in our um Christian context, but urgency. Um and this is something that I've been thinking a lot about myself in relation to like how we approach kind of next gen ministry. But I also know that you have some some thoughts and experience with like you know evangelism and how we treat evangelism with urgency but also with care. So we're gonna we're gonna talk about what this looks like. Yeah. Um yeah, for people to um hopefully be able to take this out into their own lives. That's the goal, right?
SPEAKER_04Yep, yeah. That's the goal.
SPEAKER_01That's the goal. So um thinking about urgency, number one, do you feel like people operate with any urgency ever? And like, do you feel like people live urgent lives?
SPEAKER_04I mean, I do think people live urgent lives, but do I think people are always urgent about the right things? Um, when you take a thousand foot view, when you have like the eternal perspective. I don't think most of us and I don't think we any of us, even the people who are more urgent for the right things, I think we don't do it all the time. Um but yeah, I think most people when they when they think of what makes them feel urgent, um, or the things that are urgent to them, it's it's gonna be more life stuff, like day-to-day life stuff, like jobs, kids, yeah, like the the ever increasing and changing schedule. Right, yeah, and the to-do list that is always going. And I mean, I'm guilty of that. Like my I just have this list on my phone of everything that I need to do, and it just is this scrolling, rotating thing, and it's just it demands my urgency in some ways. And sometimes when I'm so locked into that, it's hard to really focus on things I need to be urgent about that are not the tasks right in front of me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I think we base a lot of that off of like what's expected of us. So, like your children, like they're expecting you to take them to soccer practice or your spouse or your job, like there's an expectation. Um, and so there is somebody like there's like an element of accountability that's there. And so you're like, like you're saying with your list, you start to push those things up to the top because someone's waiting on you to do it kind of thing. Um, somebody's expecting something of you. And so I think we yeah, we lock our our eyes on those things and we get they become urgent without us really thinking about it as urgency.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, but so we're gonna talk about like the urgency of the gospel um and how people don't really I mean, myself included, like you said, we get wrapped up in our day-to-day and our schedules, and we kind of forget that it's more than just like saying like Jesus loves you, like no, there's an urgency behind why, and there is an expectation and accountability from God. Um, so what do you think that like that urgency of the gospel is rooted in? I guess I'll say.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, well, I think it well, first off, you said gospel, and I'm always very cognizant and aware that that's a word that either people assume a lot of things about or a word that people just don't know what to do with. Like when I was uh back in the day, I had a friend who a bunch of people who were part of this or this mission organization that I was in in in college. And he asked people, like, what is the gospel? And they would be like, uh, is this like a trick question? Like it's like I should know the answer, but I don't really know. Yeah. Um so and I I've been I've been reading Galatians a lot recently, and it's all about like making sure you understand the gospel so that when something that's not it is there, you're aware of it. And I think a lot of people they don't know how to articulate it. True. Other than if you say, Well, what about the cross? And like, oh, okay, I can explain the cross. But the message of the gospel is the message of the cross. And the thing about a gospel is a gospel is an immediate, like there's an urgency to this, the the context of what a gospel is. Because like in the ancient world, like a gospel, it was the Greek word is you and Gelion, but it's like a message of good news. Okay, and what it was is like if if a battle was won and you are now under like uh the the king that ruled over you that was a tyrant is no longer there, the messengers then had the mission of taking that good news to the people.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So like there was an urgency. You didn't want to be like, okay, I'll get there when I get there. Right. Yeah. There was like a no, my job right now is to take this message of good news that we're we're free.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And get it to all the people that are now free. Right that are a part of this. And I think that's what the urgency of the gospel really like that's what it's rooted in is this idea that we carry a message of freedom, of forgiveness, of love, of like all these things that Jesus and the cross secure for us.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And there's an urgency to spread it. Yeah. But I think a lot of us don't really do that.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01And I think you're, you know, talking about understanding of what is the gospel. Like, you're right. Like, if a lot of a lot of us would just sit and try to answer that question, we might kind of fumble through it because it is one of those things where you're like, Yeah, I know what that is. And then when it really comes down to like say write it out, you're like, hold on a minute. You know, I know the pieces, but and I think the um, yeah, like knowing that obviously God can do what what God wants to do, but uh independent of us, but like it is dependent on us to make sure that that message reaches somebody. Um, and so yeah, knowing that we have to have a full understanding of our, you know, our own description of the gospel and that sort of thing, um, should lead us, like you're saying, to want to go tell people um with urgency, but also with like excitement and like urgency doesn't always have to be like a panic, like because I think we've we've kind of talked about this, but like urgency can almost be like a little freak out moment, like and we start to wrap eternity and like you know, you're gonna go to hell, like all this stuff in it. That's where it kind of gets rooted at a lot of times, like evangelism. Um, but that's just a tiny, tiny piece of the gospel, you know. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I mean, when you think of the things that are urgent that most people think are urgent, right, when it comes to your job, like the deadlines to task, like there's a consequence associated with not meeting those.
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_04And that can create almost a sense of panic. Um, yep. And I think when we even think about the like talking about the gospel, like there's some people that they get the urgency and it's like anxious nervousness of throwing as much spaghetti against the wall without caring how you do it, just to say you you have been out there in the fields doing it. Yeah. And that's not great either.
SPEAKER_01No, yeah. And I think like um we can mistake urgency, like you're saying, with just doing as much as we possibly can. Um, but it's can get a little careless because you're throwing out this stuff without any, you know. Obviously, yeah, we talk a lot about discipleship and and leading people in their faith well. Um, and so it is a lot more than like handing someone a little card, you know, that's a track, whatever you want to call it.
SPEAKER_04Which worked really great apparently 50 years ago, but not today. Yeah. Because nobody reads them.
SPEAKER_01Nobody, yeah, they're gonna probably toss it in the garbage. But um, yeah, I think there's um an urgency to, in my opinion, I think like um investing time is kind of the way I think about what urgency looks like. But what would you say, like if we're not gonna go around just tossing tracks everywhere, what are we gonna do? Like, what does that look like to approach evangelism with urgency?
SPEAKER_04I mean, uh Tim Keller has this whole podcast called How to Reach the West again. And in it, he says some really interesting things about evangelism because it's all about how do we how do we reach people in our country with the gospel because we're kind of post-Christian as a overall culture.
SPEAKER_03Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Um, like everybody kind of knows the thing, but nobody really like is urgent or either they either they don't believe it and they've already like, well, it's too familiar to me that I'm just like cold to it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Um, but his whole idea is like helping people realize the furniture.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_04Like people have like in their in their life, they have the Christian furniture, and some people they just got it in the wrong places, and sometimes that means helping them figure out what's the right order to get this space in the correct order.
SPEAKER_03Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_04And then some people it's like you gotta go help them import the chair and import the couch to get the furniture in the room. Yeah. But I think the best way to do it is always gonna be in a relationship. Um because that's like man, I I whenever I used to do youth ministry, there was a quote that I hated because I it just was it's true, but it doesn't it it means I have to do more than what I feel like I'm I need to be doing. And it's uh there was it was all over these youth pastor blogs, and it was um nobody really cares about what you have to say until they know that you care. And it's even more I have to say that again, nobody cares about what you have to do. Have to say until they know that you care.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_04Um not to say that I don't think it's good to care. Um, but sometimes I thought, well, I just gotta get the message out there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04It's like, well, it's just gonna fall on deaf ears if they don't really know that you are invested in them because everybody's trying to get a message across. Everybody's gotten it. Especially now. Yeah. Everybody's posturing for something. But until they actually know that you care, that's when the guard goes down, and that's when you gotta really genuinely care about people. Like Jesus, he he had a message, but he was also drawn with compassion to people. Right. Like you can't say that this dude was trying to the pedal something, like he really did care about people.
SPEAKER_01He was not out for a number, like yeah, like a statistic.
SPEAKER_04Which is one thing I love about like our church, right? Like it doesn't have to be a numbers game.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Because we're not reporting to any like denominational body or like any sort of outside group that's trying to keep track of numbers. So like the numbers for us really just get to be celebration points rather than metrics. Yeah. Um, yep. So yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I think um the word patience comes to mind. I was reading in 2 Timothy. Um, but like we have to approach these things in in a patient way. And a lot of times we wanna we feel the urgency. We're like, yes, I know the gospel, I love Jesus, I want people to know about it, so I'm gonna go tell Logan about it, and he's gonna accept Jesus right now, and he's gonna be great and it's gonna be awesome. And I think like that's kind of the mindset we can have sometimes, but when we're not met with you know, that immediate like uh salvation moment, we struggle being patient. Um, and so I'm just gonna read this from 2 Timothy uh chapter four. Uh I'll start with verse one. It's like one through five, but I won't read all of it. Um says I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and in his kingdom, preach the word, be ready in season and out of season, reprove, rebuke, and exhort with complete patience and teaching. And I was mentioning to you, like sometimes we forget about that patience and teaching part. Um, because also to teach, you gotta know something. Like you can't just be like again, you can't just read off uh gospel bullet points and then people start to ask you questions and you're like uh hold on a minute, let me you know, which is not to say there's not you know something wrong with not having the answers, but um yeah, I think we get stuck in like, well, I did it, why didn't it why didn't God do anything with it? And and that can keep us from it can kind of stifle the urgency, I guess is what I'm saying.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. You know, like at the time that we're we're doing this podcast, we're in the fruit of the spirit series. And you know, like when when you when you're planting anything and you're doing gardening or whatever, it you're gonna have a it's gonna take time for something to take root, and sometimes it doesn't take root. Yeah, but you still work at it. Yep. Um, and I think the interesting thing, like I in First Corinthians, Paul talks about it, he's like, you know, I planted, Apollos watered, God made it grow. So it's this idea that when it comes to talking about your faith, like you might have a specific role to play that is not to see the fruit. Yeah. Like you might be the one laying the the putting the seed in the ground for the first time. Like the way you live, the way you have conversation with people, it might be the first time they actually let the wall down and let the seed actually be planted in their heart. And then someone else might come along, or you might find have someone come into your life who like someone else has planted, and now your job is to water, and neither of you might not ever see the fruit. Um, but then there's someone who's gonna harvest and help with helping them make that decision. So I think sometimes we do because we live in a culture where we like to see the result.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_03And I'm guilty of that.
SPEAKER_04I mean, I mean, hey, we like Amazon packages in two days, and now if they don't care in one, I'm a little frustrated. So like we don't we don't like being patient with that kind of stuff, but with people you gotta be patient because and I mean that's loving people well. Like you don't want to rush them to it. You don't want them to like you want them to wrestle with this because Jesus is like, hey, like don't just like count the cost of what this actually is. Yeah, like do you really understand your due diligence before you start building this to see if you actually get it?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yep.
SPEAKER_04Um, because you don't want to just rush somebody to the cross because then like how deep is that salvation if that's just like rushed.
SPEAKER_01Right. And the the rooted, you know, nature of it. Is it really rooted and when they go from you because they may not stay with you all the time, you know, like you're saying. Um, how rooted is it? Um and all of this kind of makes me think of obviously I'm getting ready to move into a new role, but I've spent a lot of time with kids here in the last couple of years and um thinking about kids and students specifically and um the urgency that I feel to do what you're saying, to use that time as like, let's walk with them, let's teach them well, let's love them well, and give them the patience and and understanding to get to know Jesus, you know. Um and I think sometimes we don't in the world of of church, you know, we just don't really look at it that way. We look at it as like, I mean, unfortunately, childcare, you know, um, or we look at it as a place for our kids to find friends and you know, all these beneficial things. Um, but are we really thinking of it as like, you know, I'll use middle schoolers for example. Middle school's a crazy time. And like like a very, very uh formidable time, like things that they're learning and all that. Um and so approaching those areas of ministry, those uh generations of ministry, um, with that urgency and patience. Um why do you feel like that kind of ends up being say put on the back burner? But like a lot of times we just assume like, oh, well, it's they'll get to it one day. Like, why not now?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I mean, I think um I think there's a lot of things that go into that. And it's different with different age ranges, because I mean, like historically in in every church, the hardest place to get people to invest time is with kids, which is crazy because like scripture talks all about the importance of like getting kids ready to go in the direction they ought to go. Um and I mean sometimes I mean I I'm I'm guilty of it. We can just be selfish and in our faith. Like I've I I the my participation in the body is really just consumption for me. Um and it's a lot of work to invest in another person, and there's a lot of patience, and it's frustrating because I mean, like there were there were nights whenever I did youth where I would I would come home and I would just be really discouraged because I felt like nobody got it that night.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And then there'll be days where I felt like something uh something I saw a bud from the vine. And I was like, oh wow, okay, someone's getting it. Um and it can be discouraging, especially when you're really passionate about it. But I think that's the idea of making sure you realize it's it's a process and you don't know what is actually going on because you're not making anything grow. God's at work behind the scenes and you get to be a vessel that He's using to do the growth. And it's gonna take time. Yeah. But the thing is, the longer you stick with it and the deeper you build a relationship, whether it's with kids, whether it's with youth, whether it's with college students, even like you're gonna see something, especially if you're a consistent person in that in that person's life. Right. Which is really what you need. Like the goal, yeah. Like someone who's growing in their faith, they need someone consistent that they can lean on to help them, whether it's understanding things, like when something happens in their life, like they're gonna go to someone that they trust.
SPEAKER_03Yep.
SPEAKER_04And not just they they might not come to a pastor.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04Like in the old generation, it's like, well, pastors are trustworthy, not to people nowadays.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and they're supposed to answer everybody's questions. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Why would I go to a pastor? I don't know that person.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04Like I can go find an answer anywhere else. Um, so I think there's some there's something about the relationship with next generation that's really important. And it is life-giving when you do invest in it. It can be it can be difficult, it is, but it could be really good, just like anything worth doing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yep. I think of like um I actually have a situation right now, like a uh girl in fourth grade, but um the urgency to meet them where they are too, like, because she does have questions like we're gonna spend some time um here soon talking about death, because now all of a sudden that's what she's wrestling with, you know. And so I think um being ready is the word that I think of of like urgency doesn't always mean like just going and finding new people and going out and like doing all that, but like being ready in your church family and in your your community to step up when that moment happens, you know what I mean? Um, and when you see somebody on Sunday in service who is just clearly overcome by something, can you approach them with urgency and go, I don't know, you know, go sit with them and pray, ask them what they what they could be prayed for. Um so I think there's little moments of urgency that we miss again because we kind of have it in our heads that like it's gotta be this big evangelism salvation moment. Um but I think showing up for people um because that stuff's hard. Like I'll admit, I've I've felt things like that in service, or I've felt that with my, you know, working with the kids, but I'll be like, oh no, that's I don't want them to be weirded out, or like I don't want to make them uncomfortable or whatever. Um but but reacting to that like urgent feeling that where you're like I need to go talk to them or I need to go ask them what you know if they would like some prayer or whatever.
SPEAKER_04Oh, you and you know that's the Holy Spirit for sure. Like even yesterday wasn't it? I definitely told him no before yesterday. I had this happen. So I'm at I'm getting my AC and my car fixed, and it's been a a a task. Like I've been to Goldsboro three times and I've been sitting in this waiting room. Like most of what the church is going to be uh consuming this next season that comes from my it was written in the Goldsboro Deacon Jones Honda waiting room. Got it. Um but the uh when I got ready to leave, I spent a lot of time there. Got to talk to some of the people that worked there. Um, got to be patient whenever frustrating things happened and try to like model my faith in that way. Um but then when I got ready to leave, right? Because they fixed me, I'm no I'm not gonna be back here, hopefully, for a long time. Um and I just looked down in my console and I had one of our invite cards, right? For the church. And there one of the people lives not too far away from here. Okay. And I was like, you know what? Like it's just like the burden, just like kind of give them that card. Like God just kind of put his hand on the shoulder, it's like, you're gonna go back in there and be awkward. Yeah, and you're gonna hand this person a card. And I'm like, Oh, but I really don't want to do this right now. I just want to go home.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So I did it. And I was like thinking last night after I got home, I'm like, man, if I didn't do that, how much of a more of a burden would I be feeling right now?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Cause like God definitely like He had something, He might, I don't know, there might be nothing that comes from this. Yeah. But in this moment, he's like, You're either gonna plant a seed or you're gonna water. Yeah. And you're gonna leave.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and it's again it's that like result-based like thoughts that we have because like you we're thinking we got to get him to our church, but you handing him a card could just prompt him to even think about going to church anywhere, you know what I mean? So like we get kind of fixated on like a result um that we feel like feel like we know what God's doing.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and you think about this fact, the idea like we're we're kind of like if you think about how the church is like we're we're kind of the army for the kingdom on earth. Yeah. And like the the person who's in charge of the army, the general, they get to position the people and call them. And one of the things that you said a second ago when you read that passage was like we're charged. Like we think about all the things that we're urged about, it's usually because somebody expects something from us. Yeah. And like that verse says, Hey, you've been charged. Like God, it's in the name of Jesus, you are expected to go and do these things. Yeah. So that means whenever not messing around. And that and that's not just when the Holy Spirit makes it clear that that's something you're supposed to do. Yeah, it's like the be ready in season, out of season stuff. Like carry yourself in a way that living your life consistently, just trying to follow Jesus and then wearing that on your sleeve so other people see that. Yep. And then realizing like there is something that you you're called to do. And there's a interesting thing, um, just kind of getting to sit with people that are getting ready for baptism and hearing their stories.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04A weird phenomenon. Um, in all the stories I've heard in probably the past year. Okay. Probably about 70 to 80 percent of the people when I like hear their story, there's no other person that's been involved in getting them to where they're at.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_04Like there's not been a mentor or someone that's kind of led their hand and like explained the gospel to them or whatever um directly in relationship. It's mostly been God putting a burden on someone's heart or like them feeling like they need to to to almost like repay God for something that they did that he or that he did for them. Okay. And then finding their way here as a result of that. And it's it's almost like whenever you're a kid and like your dad's like, Hey, we're doing yard work today. You're like, all right, I'll be out there in a minute. And then you look outside, and dad's already out there doing yard work, and you're like the urgency that's like, oh gosh, I gotta get out there. Like, oh my gosh, I'm not doing what I'm supposed to be doing. Yeah. And then like you think about if you just stay inside all day and then dad comes in at the end of the day covered in grass because he's been doing all the yard work. Like, are you gonna get a good a well a well a well well done?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. Like, no, you did nothing. Yeah, you didn't do anything, yeah. And I think it is it is so much like like I was saying earlier, God doesn't need us to accomplish that, you know, to get people um to see him and to love him and all that kind of stuff. But like, how much sweeter is it for both people involved? Like the person doing the you know, gospel conversation and the person receiving it. Um, how much sweeter is it for both of us to be able to do those kinds of things together?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and you don't want to ever have God work in spite of you, like because he's asked us, he's charged us to like, hey, like go and baptize people in the name of the make disciples, like teach them, all these things. Yeah, like what regardless of what age they are, like that's the mission that we are supposed to be doing, not just about building our own self up, about our castle. You know, we talk about castle of the kingdom, like we gotta be about the kingdom, and that's the people in the kingdom that need our help to grow. Yeah, and it's people outside of the kingdom that need our help to find their way in.
SPEAKER_01Right, yep. And I think approaching it from like a we get to do this kind of thing, yeah, um, rather than Than like a you know, like let me let me go do this kind of attitude about it. Um, and I think I'm thinking about like the reason why people approach it with that attitude a lot of time is because you have to give up something.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, and like to again talking, let's just use the priority list here. If you're gonna shift your priorities around, that means something else is gonna shift to the bottom or shift lower down. And we don't want to do that. Um, it sounds really silly when you s when you say it out loud, but like I'm gonna put, you know, urgency for sharing Jesus with people at the very top, but I'm mad that I have to shift other things down, you know, or I really don't want to shift other things down. Um, and when you when you say it out loud, it sounds silly. But I I think people have a hard time um, you know, because this is in the same vein of like like serving with kids or serving with students or being in the lobby to be able to pray with somebody or you know, all the different ways we can respond with urgency, even on just a Sunday morning. Um, that requires something of us, um, that we have to give something up for that.
SPEAKER_04I mean, even just like the same way, like with frontline. Um just someone being there with a smile on their face, it's such a small thing. Once a month, just having a smile on your face for a service. Like can really it can really plant a seed. Yeah. Or it can rip up a seed if you're not there. Yeah. And like it's it's weird to think about the fact that it's such a small thing, but it really does either way have a big impact.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yep. And I think that goes back to how we started, like our our full understanding of the gospel and that we were given life in Christ, and then now we get to help people find that same life, you know, and like just knowing that fully um kind of leads us to, yeah, it's not a big deal for me to give up an hour, you know, to stand and smile. But once a month, you know, one Sunday once a month, you know. Um, things start to even feel like lesser of a priority because you you fully understand, like, man, I've just been given so much, and I'm I um I am charged with this and I am like an ambassador for him. Yeah, so there's a there's a weight to it.
SPEAKER_04And the more you do it, like the more you really step outside of the comfort zone and you push past that, like, I need to see instant results now. Like eventually, if you are consistent enough with trying to be urgent about your faith, you're gonna see fruit because you're eventually gonna be the person that set up for the harvest. Yeah, and there's moments like you you kind of said this idea, we get to do this. Like, there are moments where like I walk out of a conversation with somebody, and it's the same feeling that I imagine Jesus had after his conversation with the woman at the well. Because like his disciples come back and they've got food. They went into town to get food, hey, we got it. He goes, Man, I got food to eat that you know nothing about. Like, there's something so encouraging and filling to your soul.
SPEAKER_01I was gonna say soul filling, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Oh, it's so crazy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um, yep.
SPEAKER_04And that and I think God wants you to see that too, because that's encouraging to you for the mission. And I don't think God's like, I want you to just be a waterer and never see any fruit. Like, no, but everybody plays a role, and if everybody's doing the role right, eventually someone's gonna be reaping the fruit.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Well, and again, we get to take part in that. Like, how cool is it that you get to take part in what God Himself is doing? And like it's not of you, it's his God working through you. And like, what a I don't know, like what a privilege that is.
SPEAKER_04And like he doesn't need us, he doesn't. Like he's the God of the universe. He spoke and everything started to come together. If he wanted to, he could blast the message from the sky. But he chose and he always has chosen to use people because he's a god about relationship. He wants relationship with us, and he wants relationship with other people. Yep, and he's chosen us many times to be the vehicle to help make those other relationships happen. He wants us to be the one to introduce other people to him.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
