Remember that catchy "Hey Mickey" song from the 80s? Much like that earworm, trending social media platforms grab our attention, dominate conversations, and then fade away. In this candid reflection, I share my personal experience with Clubhouse – that audio platform I recently rediscovered forgotten on my phone – and the valuable marketing lesson it taught me.

Small business owners waste precious time chasing every shiny new platform that emerges. From Clubhouse to Lemonade and countless others, we're often seduced by the promise of being early adopters and building massive followings. But here's the brutal truth – if your actual customers aren't on these platforms looking for solutions to their problems, you're simply talking into the void.

Marketing effectively isn't about platform-hopping; it's about strategic presence where your audience already spends time. Every social channel should have a clear purpose: driving traffic to content with opt-in opportunities that capture email addresses. Without this intentional approach, you're building on rented land with no way to maintain relationships when platforms inevitably change or disappear. Traffic without conversion is just vanity metrics that don't pay the bills.

Next time you feel tempted by a trending platform, ask yourself two critical questions: Is my audience actually there? And are they actively seeking the solutions I provide? Your marketing energy belongs where your customers are already looking for help, not where other marketers are chasing trends. Focus there, and you'll build something sustainable rather than exhausting yourself on platforms that will be forgotten faster than yesterday's viral dance.

Speaker 1:

Do you all remember that song? Hey Mickey, you're so fine, you're so fine, you blow my mind. Hey Mickey. Hey Mickey, I'm bringing up that song because I was just thinking about Clubhouse. I went into my phone and I noticed this weird looking app and I looked at it and went oh my goodness, totally forgot about that social media platform. I forgot that was a thing. So that song has been stuck in my head all day because of it.

Speaker 1:

But I bring up clubhouse because if you are chasing every single trending platform that comes out and trying to be one of the first ones onto it so that you can grow your content there and you can grow your following, you're wasting precious time. We've had Lemonade, we have had Clubhouse, there have been so many platforms that have come and been a thing and everyone's talking about it and everyone's training on it and doing all the things. And I have definitely fallen into those of wanting to be onto a platform first and thinking that, especially for clubhouse. Clubhouse to me sounded like such a great idea because it was the opportunity to be able to speak and you all know I love to be able to speak, especially if I can can do it live. But having to be attached to my phone constantly. To be in that platform when there was a good discussion happening was absolutely asinine and unrealistic, just not going to happen. So we've kind of talked this week about really starting to make sure that we are utilizing platforms where our audience is not getting sucked into every single trend that takes place and knowing whether our people are using the platform in order to get their questions answered about the solution that we offer.

Speaker 1:

Too often we hop onto these platforms we think, oh, this is going to be perfect, this is, I'm going to become one of the first adapters, I'm going to grow my following and this is going to be it for me when, in reality, you are wasting a ton of time, because if you know about that platform, does the person in your audience that you were trying to reach actually know of that platform? There weren't many people that knew about Clubhouse and my audience was small business owners and is small business owners. There were a couple that knew about it, but it was primarily those that were looking to speak that knew about it. It was a complete waste of my time. So you have to really start to look at the platforms and decide is your audience going to be there? When are they going to be there? When are they going to be there? Can you make sure that your content is on the platform with the intention of getting them onto your email list to then be able to send them your products or services?

Speaker 1:

You have to utilize a marketing plan when you are using these platforms. It should not simply be to drive traffic. If you are not able to capture a person with their email, then you are wasting your time, even if you are utilizing Pinterest that way. Pinterest is a great platform. We continue to see traffic coming from it, but you have to be intentional with the traffic that is coming. You have to make sure that the content you are sending them to has an opt-in within it, is within your niche, isn't some random piece of content that doesn't make any sense for the solutions, for the products and services that you offer.

Speaker 1:

So when you are looking at these different platforms to use, make sure that you are utilizing ones where your people actually are and they're there looking for your solution. They're not there looking to watch a bunch of kittens yawn and fall over. You have to use the platform the way that it's meant to be used and the audience is actually there looking for your solution. So those are two different things that I want you to be thinking about. When you think about jumping onto a trending platform that all of a sudden has come out of the woodwork as being the next best thing, or even a platform that maybe you're on right now and are you wasting your time, is your audience? They're actually looking for your solution. That's the question I want you to ask yourself. Every time you think about posting content to social media, is it directed to your audience and are they there looking for it? All right, I will talk to you all soon.
