From Merry-Go-Round to Wall Slam: Navigating Anxiety in Volatile Times

Subscriber Episode Jenny Melrose: Business Strategist Episode 73

Subscriber-only episode

Anxiety has a way of sneaking up on us, transforming from a manageable merry-go-round into something far more disorienting and suffocating. With market volatility, endless news cycles, and algorithm-driven content feeding our fears, it's no wonder many entrepreneurs find themselves trapped in an anxiety spiral that paralyzes progress.

Through this deeply personal episode, I unpack the progression of anxiety and how it manifests in our business lives. Drawing from conversations with clients and my own experiences, I reveal how anxiety evolves from something we can step away from into a force that pins us against the wall. But more importantly, I offer a practical five-step framework to break free: recognizing anxiety for what it is, calming your nervous system (with reference to Dr. Lahana's strategies from our previous episode), reconnecting with your purpose, taking small but meaningful actions, and finding the right support system.

What makes this approach different is the focus on your audience – remembering that they need your solutions, and if anxiety keeps you stuck, they miss out on what only you can provide. Your gifts aren't just for you; they're meant to serve others. Whether you're experiencing hormonal shifts amplifying these feelings or simply navigating uncertain times, these steps provide a path forward without minimizing the very real experience of anxiety.

Speaker 1:

Part of what I'm hearing a lot from clients right now is about the anxiety spiral that they are feeling. So, whether it is a matter of the volatility that we are living in in this day and age, in 2025, april of 2025, of the up and down of the stock market, of the craziness that seems to continually be coming up in the news, and, of course, whatever you get shown within social media platforms, continues to build on that actual anxiety that you're feeling, because that's the content that you can continue to see once you click on something. I am hearing, though, a lot about this anxiety spiral, and the best way that I can describe this is anxiety often starts off as a merry-go-round. It's pretty even keel. You can more or less get off when you need to, and then it becomes the teacups, where you're getting moved all around in different directions. It's harder to get on and off from, and if you're an 80s baby, you then may remember that crazy I don't even remember what it was called at those carnivals, though where it was against the wall. You stood and it just slammed you against the wall and it lifted up, and it was probably the most unsafe ride ever invented, but that's what anxiety becomes. It becomes this suffocating feeling of you can't get off, you can't get past it, you can't move forward.

Speaker 1:

And here's what I want to give you. I want to give you steps that you can take. The first thing that I need you to do is I need you to recognize one that this is anxiety. This isn't you've gone crazy. This is likely if you're of the age this is your hormones going bananas and you're not really sure how to handle it. So recognizing that is the first step. The second step is to find a way to calm your nervous system. Recently just this past week released an episode with Dr Lahana which is excellent on really resetting your nervous system. Different strategies you can put in place in order to do that. So go take a listen to that.

Speaker 1:

Then your next step is to remember that you have an amazing solution for your audience, and if you don't offer it, they can't receive it. They can't have the solution that you offer. They can't have the support that you offer. So I need you to go back to why you do what you do and being about those people. And then the fourth step is to take action, little baby steps forward. There was that movie back in the 80s. I'm terrible with movies, I'm terrible with songs, but it was that psychiatrist and Bill Murray, and it was all about take little baby steps forward. That's exactly what this is. You have to find little baby steps of what you can do to move forward on what it is that you are going to continue to provide for your audience. How can you get that engagement back with them? How can you get back in front of them? What is it that you need to do Now?

Speaker 1:

The fifth and final step with this is that, if you cannot take these steps alone because you need a sounding board, you need to have someone or people in general that you can just test this off of, see if it makes sense, get feedback for the steps that you're taking. Find those people. If you're not an insider already, you need to pay as an unhinged listener. You're getting $20 off a month when you sign up, so it's only 29 bucks a month. You're going to get the support, the strategies and the accountability that you need in order to take those steps forward.
