Why Rejection Hits So Hard
JennyI want to talk today about how to handle rejection without spiraling. And I think that this is something that when I first started my online business, I always felt I had really thick skin. And I still do. I grew up in New York, an hour north of New York City. We tell people the way that it is. I grew up in an Irish Catholic family. There was a lot of things that were that get said, and you have to be someone that can handle it. I played uh three sports throughout high school, two sports in college. So I was very much used to people telling me ways to improve things or being negative or telling me I suck or telling me I need to get out there and practice more or telling me I was too small for things.
When Business Feels Like Identity
JennyUm, so I definitely think that I have thick skin, but I also know that when it comes to business, entrepreneurs have a tendency to see their business as themselves. It's as if when our business fails, it's similar to someone calling your child ugly, I think, because it hits home very much. We put our blood, sweat, and our tears and tons of time into our businesses, and because of that, we end up taking it very personally. So today I really want to give you some things that you can do in order to push past this.
Separate Results From Self-Worth
JennyUm, high achievers have a tendency to internalize rejection very differently than others. That there you have to understand that there's a difference between this didn't work and I'm not good enough. And that's what we need to make sure that we are analyzing. So there's certain questions that I want you to be able to ask yourself before you start going into that spiral.
Questions That Stop The Spiral
JennyWhen you have rejection, I want you to look at asking yourself, what can I learn? What needs to be refined, and what should I repeat? And what feedback matters and what doesn't. I cannot tell you how many clients I have spoken to that will tell me a negative thing that was said, and they are spiraling over this negative thing. And it is one negative thing that they have heard in probably three years, and they already have 150 positive reviews, people that have emailed them saying you've changed my life, gotten great reviews online as well as in person. So it's that idea that you need to make sure that you are looking at the data, and a data point is a positive review as well as a negative review, and we need to be able to look at the numbers, we need to not make it so that we internalize what is being said and making ourselves feel shameful. So, what I want you to be able to do is start thinking about ways that you can react after rejection.
The Law Of Averages Mindset
JennyAnd rejection can come from anything. Rejection can be a failed launch, it can be a no to be a guest on a podcast, it could be that you're not getting anyone to sign up for your summit that you're hosting. There's lots of different ways that rejection can happen. But what we need to do is we need to emotionally regulate ourselves. We need to look at raw data and make sure we're looking at these numbers. And always remember that when it comes to the law of averages, when you are reaching out to pitch people, to be on a podcast, to be um a summit guest, to do a list swap, anytime you are putting yourself out there, the law of averages states that one out of every 10 people will say yes. Which means that nine out of ten say no. Which you have to be able to handle that and understand that and be okay with it. So instead of taking it personally, I want you to find a way to emotionally regulate yourself.
Regulate эмоtions Then Return To Routine
JennyTake a walk, do a voice memo to process it, journal, answer those questions that I just asked you. Maybe you might talk to a mentor or bring it up in a membership group or a mastermind group. This is sometimes something that gets brought up in masterminds when people are starting to feel that spiral and taking it personal. You can also make sure that you are looking at long-term wins. Look at all the differences you have made in people's lives and the positives that you have impacted on people. And then make sure that you start returning to your routines quickly. Because again, if you are emailing people and pitching people, it's just a number game. You have to get through all those and know that. Now, this is often I think pitching for some, well, at least for me, pitching is just very simple. I don't take that personal if someone tells me no at all. I know that that's a no, not right now. I think I more take a launch that I didn't expect to do real well, or a sales promo not to do. That's the kind of stuff that I have more of a tendency to start to feel negative
Diagnose Launches With Real Metrics
Jennyabout. And I think that this is where you need to be making sure that you're looking at that data. What time of year was it? What happened with the open rates of your emails, the click rates of the emails? Check and make sure that you are looking at data rather than just throwing caution to the wind and expecting it to be that it's you. Because I can tell you right now it's not. You did this business for a reason. You're impacting people, and I want you to continue to
