Why Procrastination Isn’t Laziness
JennyProcrastination in business rarely looks like laziness. It looks like over planning, refining your strategy, taking another course, tweaking your website, or waiting until you feel ready. But underneath all of that, procrastination is usually doing one job, protecting you from discomfort. In this episode, we're breaking down what is actually driving procrastination and how to finally move through it without relying on motivation. What we really need to understand is that in reality, most entrepreneurs feel that procrastination is about poor time management or lack of discipline and not enough structure. But in reality, we do have time. It's that we're not using it on the right things. Procrastination is often a signal, not a scheduling issue. So what I want you to start to think about is that procrastination is rarely about the time that we do or do not have. It's about the emotion that you were
The Four Hidden Drivers
Jennyfeeling. And there's four hidden drivers of procrastination. The first is the feel of failure. If I tried and it doesn't work, it proves something about me, which ends up leading to avoidance of those tasks. And this is where perfectionism will often show up. The second is fear of success. Success can often create pressure to maintain results, expecting us to have more visibility and higher expectations and a greater responsibility, which could often be that you are subconsciously resistant to growth if this is where you were struggling. The third is overwhelming disguised as strategy. We often have too many options, which ends up equaling paralysis. We constantly are researching instead of executing and mistaking clarity for more information. And the final one, the fourth, is identity misalignment. People like me don't do things like this. This is where new level actions don't match our old identity. And it can often be the resistance that happens when stepping into CE low-level decisions. So if you are someone that is has grown and you were starting to hire a team and you start questioning it, it might be the identity misalignment. You may be really questioning where you were and where you need to go. So it's not a matter of you're avoiding tasks, you're avoiding emotional discomfort tied to them. Instead, what we need to do is we need to make sure that we have a productivity loop that doesn't keep us stuck. We want instead to be able to knock certain things off of our lists of what we need to get done and be able to move forward in the strategies that we have been researching or putting it into action.
Action Creates Momentum Not Motivation
JennySo the biggest thing I want you to make sure that you remember is that motivation is unreliable and often follows action, not precedes it. So when you are someone that say, Well, I lack motivation, it's you're not, you cannot be waiting to feel ready. That's what's going to keep you stuck and making you repeat similar things that you're comfortable with. High performers don't wait for certainty, they build momentum first. So we want to be able to have action, which is then gonna give us the clarity, which will give us confidence, which will then give us the consistency. You don't need more motivation, you need smaller entry points into action. So here are five different ways we can actually break the procrastination cycle.
Five Tools To Break The Loop
JennyThe first is that we are going to name the real task. I want you to strip it down to the smallest version. So instead of it being launch a course, I want you to think about write the first sales email. Strip it down to its basics. If you're talking about launching a podcast, create the podcast art. Then move on to the next task within that project. So you're stripping it down to the smallest task that's within that project. The second way to break procrastination is to reduce emotional weight. So I want you to start to detach your identity from the outcome. And we talked a lot about this yesterday, about that whole spiral that will often happen because we so often, as high achievers, associate our identity with the success of our business. I need you to treat it as an experiment with not as the verdict. So I don't want you to expect that because something fails, a launch, a new course, whatever it might be, that it's the end all be all. Instead, it's the experiment. You're learning from those tasks and those projects that you're putting into place. The third way that we can make sure we are breaking the procrastination cycle is to use a five-minute entry. I want you to commit to just five minutes of an action because what you will find is momentum often continues once you've started. So as long as you just commit to five minutes, five minutes of speaking, five minutes of creating that content, five minutes of working on the emails, you will end up finding that momentum will take over. The fourth is to remove decision fatigue. I want you to decide in advance what matters this week and what gets ignored. This is important. We've talked a lot about having that CEO day where you sit down with your schedule, you determine the task that you're going to be completing throughout the week. That this is where you want to make sure that you are not allowing decision fatigue to sneak in because you've already determined it ahead of time. And then the fifth and final way that you can help with this is to build a done list instead of a to-do list. Instead of thinking it as those are my to-dos that I have to get done, now it's your done list. It's the things that you are getting the stars for, making sure that you've completed and able to check off your list. I want you to make sure that as we look at this, procrastination isn't a flaw to eliminate. It's your feedback that you should be listening to about your fears and your emotional resistance to whatever it is that you are trying to do. Once you understand what it's protecting you from, you can stop fighting it and start working with it.
