Modern Immigrant

The Bilingual Journey; With Veronica Villa

Vero Season 1 Episode 49

How much do you struggle with bilingualism? Do you want your kids to speak multiple languages? Did you grew up in a home with the rule of “en la casa se habla español?”

Today we have an special episode with Veronica Villa, teacher, literacy consultant and blogger of @nene_bilingue

Vero shared her parent's immigration journey and how it shaped her to become who she is today and why bilingualism is so important for her and her family.

We discussed:

What Chicano means.

How to teach Spanish or more than one language at home.

How early in life its recommended to start learning a new language.

3 main benefits of being bilingual.

Bonus: Tips for parents for homeschooling.

As we prepared to release Veros episode we discussed how she came to become bilingual. She responded that “my dad was the reason why I’m bilingual because if I didn't become bilingual I wouldn’t have been able to communicate with him." This sentiment was extremely powerful as her father had very recently passed away. This weeks special episode is dedicated to Vero's father, and the many other immigrant parents that have helped shape us as Modern Immigrants.
