Portobello Rotary Club is over 50 years old. It meets every Wednesday evening in the King’s Manor Hotel. It’s part of an international organisation with philanthropic and humanitarian objectives - Rotary International's motto is ‘Service Above Self’. One of the ways the club here raises money is by running the monthly car boot sales at Newcraighall Station; but it’s also involved with a number of youth related projects both in Scotland and abroad. However, the members insist that they don’t take themselves too seriously with fun and friendship a vital part of the club. Perhaps surprisingly for such a well-established institution, many people don’t know about it – so David Calder went along to find out more.
