exact things, maybe hearing some hard news and asking the questions and looking at our world and not feeling like we have any answers. 00:06:39.680 --> 00:06:42.000 Can I tell you though, this is not to a reality since the beginning. 00:06:59.839 --> 00:07:10.160 You see, we're living in a world where everyone wants this utopian world, where we want this perfect world, but it looks like as we go on and on, especially in America, we want this perfect world without God. 00:07:10.879 --> 00:07:19.839 We want all the moral justices, we want all the moral things that are right with Christianity, but we want to remove ourselves as far from Christianity as we can in this world. 00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:25.120 You're seeing that in politics, you're seeing that in leaders, you're seeing that in influential people you follow online. 00:07:27.199 --> 00:07:28.639 This is not a new problem. 00:07:28.800 --> 00:07:34.000 You see, the Bible started with a group of people, Adam and Eve, who they chose to do life their own way. 00:07:34.079 --> 00:07:37.839 They chose to eat of the fruit, they chose to believe that they were God. 00:07:38.720 --> 00:07:46.480 And you see, the storyline of the Bible starts with a humanity, a people group leaving their home. 00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:50.959 They left everything that they knew that was good to them. 00:07:51.279 --> 00:08:06.000 They were exiled away from the presence of God, the place where they were supposed to inhabit, create, be just create and be image-bearers of Christ and do life within this life-breathing, animated spirit of God and dwell in that spirit. 00:08:06.319 --> 00:08:10.720 And everything was good until we chose our own way. 00:08:10.879 --> 00:08:19.920 And we let destruction and chaos into this world, and they were exiled, away from their home, away from everything that they knew. 00:08:20.399 --> 00:08:24.079 Let me remind you that the Bible is actually a unified story. 00:08:24.240 --> 00:08:29.279 Some of us we look at the Old Testament or we hear about stories in the Old Testament, like that has nothing to do with us. 00:08:29.360 --> 00:08:30.879 This is thousands of years ago. 00:08:31.040 --> 00:08:33.840 But let me remind you that the story is one story. 00:08:34.080 --> 00:08:40.399 If you put on the lenses and you're looking for Jesus, you will find Jesus throughout all the stories and pursuing our own way, not trusting God's way, and living in the destruction and the chaos that's the aftermath because of that. 00:08:59.919 --> 00:09:03.679 What I want us to do today is to look at a story in the Old Testament. 00:09:03.919 --> 00:09:06.879 I want to look at a time in God's chosen people. 00:09:06.960 --> 00:09:08.960 This is the nation of Israel. 00:09:09.279 --> 00:09:13.440 I want to look at one of the darkest times in their history. 00:09:14.000 --> 00:09:26.080 Because I believe today that we can look at their story, we can take away principles, we can take away things that we can apply to our life today or see how it affects our way, our life the same way it did back then. 00:09:27.200 --> 00:09:31.840 Just a quick recap for you guys: God chose Israel as his chosen nation. 00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:33.279 And he called Abraham. 00:09:33.360 --> 00:09:35.679 He said, Abraham, you are going to be the seed. 00:09:35.759 --> 00:09:40.799 Through you, my nation will be born of you, and you guys will be a holy nation, a priesthood. 00:09:41.039 --> 00:09:44.000 They were called to live separate from the world. 00:09:44.320 --> 00:09:53.360 And to live under God's law, to live under his reign, to be different, to be fruitful, and have the protection and blessing of God. 00:09:54.320 --> 00:09:58.879 But quickly they see that they strayed away from that because of the broken world that we live in. 00:09:59.039 --> 00:10:03.840 And the Israelites found themselves in slavery under Egypt. 00:10:04.720 --> 00:10:10.240 And they were under Egypt's thumb of oppression for years, hundreds of years. 00:10:10.559 --> 00:10:15.120 And Moses was called out by God to lead God's people out of exile. 00:10:15.440 --> 00:10:25.039 They were far from home, far from their destiny, far from where God wanted them to be, and God, with Moses, he saved his people. 00:10:25.919 --> 00:10:33.519 And then we get this concept where it's like this pattern happening over and over and over in scripture, where God steps in, he saves them. 00:10:34.720 --> 00:10:37.039 And then we go back to our old ways. 00:10:37.679 --> 00:10:40.960 We go back to our old ways of doing our life, and what happens? 00:10:41.039 --> 00:10:47.440 They start worshiping false idols, false pagans, they start just commingling with people in different cultures around them. 00:10:47.759 --> 00:10:53.039 And quickly, their life does not look like the life that God is calling them out. 00:10:53.120 --> 00:10:55.840 They're not a holy priesthood being separated. 00:10:58.399 --> 00:11:10.879 And then hundreds of years later, we find where we pick up in the story Israel, a nation chosen out by God, overtaken by the Babylonian Empire. 00:11:12.080 --> 00:11:22.240 Everything they knew, everything they loved, everything that was familiar to them was taken away in an instant. 00:11:24.159 --> 00:11:27.200 They found themselves as exiles. 00:11:28.000 --> 00:11:37.200 And we read about this in 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles, and I'll paraphrase it, but it is very vivid of what happened to this group people, a group of people. 00:11:37.519 --> 00:11:45.600 You see, they're living life, and this Babylonian Empire comes through, and it takes three steps, but they end up sieging the city, breaking through the walls. 00:11:45.679 --> 00:11:48.639 And what they do is they take over this group of people. 00:11:48.799 --> 00:12:00.480 They take the king, they take the military leaders, they take the ones who have the most skills, the carpenters, the tradesmen, they take all these people who are literally doing the work of God and cultivating ground and making culture. 00:12:00.639 --> 00:12:10.240 They take all of these people, the big strong army, they take all of the strong men and the best that Israel has to offer, and they take them into exile. 00:12:11.039 --> 00:12:18.720 And they leave this group of people, the poorest of the poor, to fend for themselves, army all around their walls of Jerusalem. 00:12:19.200 --> 00:12:24.480 And for years, famine is happening, destruction is happening, people are losing hope. 00:12:24.639 --> 00:12:29.519 People have no idea what life is going to look like, and it doesn't get better. 00:12:30.240 --> 00:12:33.919 No, one day the walls are seized by the Babylonian Empire. 00:12:34.080 --> 00:12:47.200 The Babylonians come running in, it's very vivid, but it says that young men, men of all ages, old and young, get chased into the very temple of the Lord. 00:12:47.519 --> 00:12:50.240 You see, the safest place they thought they could be. 00:12:50.480 --> 00:12:58.000 The God who was in control, the God who called them to be separate apart, the God who told them through them they would bring redemption to the world. 00:12:58.320 --> 00:13:02.559 Young and old men were slaughtered inside of the temple of the Lord. 00:13:03.519 --> 00:13:06.240 The very place they thought they were probably safest. 00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:11.120 And the walls for the city were torn down. 00:13:11.279 --> 00:13:28.320 They destroyed the city of Jerusalem, killed thousands and thousands of people, and the rest who were alive were taken into exile, into a place far away from home. 00:13:28.879 --> 00:13:45.759 A place where they had no idea of the surrounding geographical lands, how to get home, no idea, but then found themselves in this pagan land, worshiping a pagan God, asking themselves the same questions we ask ourselves today. 00:13:46.879 --> 00:13:48.320 Is God in control? 00:13:49.440 --> 00:13:51.279 Will he redeem us? 00:13:52.000 --> 00:13:54.320 Is there hope for a future? 00:13:54.720 --> 00:13:58.399 This world where my kids are growing up, is there going to be a world for them? 00:13:58.639 --> 00:14:04.000 Is the United States going to become together and be the light, be the light for the world to see? 00:14:04.799 --> 00:14:14.000 We used to be that to the world, but we've seen chaos and diversity tearing things apart versus coming in and being unified as this country that God has called us to be. 00:14:15.120 --> 00:14:16.799 Is there hope for our nation? 00:14:17.039 --> 00:14:19.039 Is there hope for the world? 00:14:19.519 --> 00:14:23.200 Or personally, is there hope for your redemptive story? 00:14:24.639 --> 00:14:28.480 The Babylonians destroyed everything that they knew. 00:14:28.639 --> 00:14:31.840 They took everything of value to the king. 00:14:32.960 --> 00:14:38.480 And just like that, in an instant, their lives were completely different. 00:14:40.080 --> 00:14:46.159 Some of us today, that kind of hits home on our struggle of the world and what's there to be. 00:14:46.320 --> 00:14:57.919 And can we trust that God will use our nation, He'll use us, use our church, use our movement here to bring restoration to the world. 00:14:59.360 --> 00:15:01.600 There's a prophet, his name is Ezekiel. 00:15:02.399 --> 00:15:10.639 He's a cool character in the Bible because Ezekiel was about 30 years old and he lived through the destruction of Jerusalem. 00:15:10.879 --> 00:15:18.720 He was about 30 years old, and that's important because that would have been the time where he was a priest, his father was a priest, he would have been blessed into the priesthood. 00:15:18.960 --> 00:15:33.840 So everything he knew about life, everything he dreamed of, becoming a priest, blessing the nation, speaking God's word, and doing different things in the culture that he would have done as a priest in the culture as a as a priesthood of Israel. 00:15:34.720 --> 00:15:37.919 And he was taken away from that. 00:15:38.559 --> 00:15:42.480 He was stripped of the hope of the reality of the world he lived in. 00:15:42.720 --> 00:15:52.960 And the cool thing about Ezekiel that looking past, it's not cool back then, but looking at it now is God actually told Ezekiel that the people of Israel would not listen to him. 00:15:54.000 --> 00:15:57.440 It kind of seems pointless looking back at Ezekiel preaching. 00:15:57.600 --> 00:16:04.720 But that's how you can see how much Ezekiel trusted in God, preaching judgment, hope, and restoration. 00:16:04.960 --> 00:16:10.559 You see, the people who were off in exile, all they had was the stories growing up. 00:16:10.799 --> 00:16:18.320 All they had was Isaiah's words, Jeremiah's words for hope of restoration. 00:16:19.759 --> 00:16:21.840 We pick up in chapter 37. 00:16:22.879 --> 00:16:25.279 Ezekiel is having a vision from God. 00:16:25.360 --> 00:16:27.600 This isn't the first vision he's had from God. 00:16:28.000 --> 00:16:32.559 And this vision is a little bit different than the other ones that he's had in the past. 00:16:33.279 --> 00:16:42.639 Starting in chapter 1, it says, The Lord took hold of me, and I was carried away by the Spirit of the Lord to a valley filled with bones. 00:16:43.440 --> 00:16:47.519 He led me all around among the bones that covered the valley floor. 00:16:47.759 --> 00:16:52.480 They were scattered everywhere across the ground and were completely dried out. 00:16:52.879 --> 00:16:55.519 You see, these bones they represent death. 00:16:55.759 --> 00:17:00.399 They represent the loss of hope, loss of a future. 00:17:01.279 --> 00:17:04.640 God's people found themselves hopeless. 00:17:05.279 --> 00:17:09.359 And scripture tells us that these were very dry bones. 00:17:09.680 --> 00:17:13.519 If you picture into your mind, it's like these bleached white bones. 00:17:13.680 --> 00:17:15.039 Because they've been sitting in the sun. 00:17:15.279 --> 00:17:20.319 There's no evidence for life, there's no flesh, there's no muscles, there's no skin on them, no blood. 00:17:21.839 --> 00:17:25.519 This death that happened, it was a long time ago. 00:17:26.480 --> 00:17:31.039 And Ezekiel is looking out into a valley that seems hopeless. 00:17:31.279 --> 00:17:34.400 No life, no higher and higher, and you're actually finding yourself with more and more burden constantly. 00:18:11.359 --> 00:18:17.279 The dream of financial peace, freedom seems impossible. 00:18:18.559 -->
