00:02:19.680 --> 00:02:22.000 Today we're gonna be looking in the Jewish scriptures. 00:02:22.080 --> 00:02:24.479 This is what we often call the Old Testament. 00:02:24.639 --> 00:02:36.000 And in the Old Testament, there are the two books of the kings, and they tell the story of the kingdoms of Israel, God's chosen people, from the perspective of the human monarchy. 00:02:36.159 --> 00:02:46.479 We're gonna be in 2 Kings 13, and there we see King Jehoash come into power and immediately follow the example of the kings who were before him. 00:02:46.719 --> 00:02:49.599 He became an idol worshiping sellout. 00:02:49.919 --> 00:02:52.000 He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. 00:02:52.159 --> 00:02:53.520 He did not follow God. 00:02:53.680 --> 00:02:56.159 He led the entire nation into idolatry. 00:02:56.319 --> 00:03:01.039 They turned their back on the God who had given them victory after victory after victory. 00:03:01.199 --> 00:03:08.000 In the same chapter, we're gonna see the death of Elisha, one of the greatest prophets in the history of Israel. 00:03:08.159 --> 00:03:22.800 And in the interaction between these two men, the evil king Jehoash and the great prophet Elisha, we are gonna get a glimpse of how God's omnipotence works together with our obedience. 00:03:23.039 --> 00:03:29.680 Now, this dynamic is critical for us to understand as we navigate lives on purpose and with purpose. 00:03:29.919 --> 00:03:34.960 God is omnipotent, which simply means he has all of the power. 00:03:35.199 --> 00:03:39.680 There is no power available that God does not already possess. 00:03:39.840 --> 00:03:51.599 However, scripture also demonstrates clearly that God, in his unlimited power, has granted us freedom to make real choices that actually matter. 00:03:51.919 --> 00:03:57.280 Not understanding this dynamic can cause us to fall too far on one side or the other. 00:03:57.520 --> 00:04:10.000 Some people misunderstand God's sovereignty to mean that we play no role at all, whatsoever, in what happens in the world, that our choices don't really account for anything. 00:04:10.240 --> 00:04:18.639 And this is a dangerous way to think because it's very fatalistic and it really absolves us of any responsibility for the choices that we make. 00:04:18.879 --> 00:04:27.600 On the other side of the spectrum, some people overestimate their own actions and are in danger of stealing glory that rightly belongs to God. 00:04:27.759 --> 00:04:35.519 Now, this dynamic is admittedly not easy to understand, but I think today's passage will help us learn how to navigate this practically. 00:04:35.680 --> 00:04:47.759 Now it starts with Israel under attack from a foreign nation, and the Arameans, they have come in and they have won a decisive and humiliating victory at a place called Aphak. 00:04:48.000 --> 00:04:51.680 And Aphak was now a stronghold of Aram. 00:04:52.000 --> 00:04:53.839 And the king feels out of option. 00:04:53.920 --> 00:05:01.759 So even though he doesn't worship God, and even though he doesn't follow God, and even though he's turned his back on God, he runs to Elisha. 00:05:02.160 --> 00:05:11.600 All throughout Elisha's life, he has been given insight from God that throughout Israel's history has led them to great military victories. 00:05:11.759 --> 00:05:16.480 And so let's watch how the king approaches Elisha in 2 Kings 13, verse 14. 00:05:16.639 --> 00:05:29.680 When Elisha became sick with illness, from which he eventually died, King Jehoash of Israel went down and wept over him and said, My father, my father, the chariots and horsemen of Israel. 00:05:29.920 --> 00:05:35.839 Now this greeting gives us an indication of where the king's remorse is rooted. 00:05:36.079 --> 00:05:39.360 God still loves Israel, even though they are living in sin. 00:05:39.680 --> 00:05:47.279 He continues to provide guidance and even military direction, largely through the insight of Elisha. 00:05:47.600 --> 00:05:52.720 And so why would the king be so devastated by a prophet of God falling sick? 00:05:52.879 --> 00:05:57.839 It's because he sees Elisha as useful in the battle at hand. 00:05:58.079 --> 00:06:04.079 It's not because he is magically converted back to really believing in God or trying to follow God or worshiping God. 00:06:04.319 --> 00:06:06.480 He just sees Elisha as useful. 00:06:06.639 --> 00:06:12.160 And we see this in what he says: the chariots and horsemen of Israel. 00:06:12.720 --> 00:06:24.319 You see, Jehoash understands that the prophet Elisha is more beneficial to him militarily than all of his chariot riders and all of the horsemen that he currently has in his army. 00:06:24.639 --> 00:06:29.759 Elisha growing sick is a threat to the king's military power. 00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:33.839 And this is especially pertinent because they are under attack. 00:06:34.079 --> 00:06:42.800 And because they are living in such rebellion and he's living in sin and has led the nation into sin, they've already lost their first battle in a humiliating way. 00:06:43.680 --> 00:06:49.199 Typically, Jehoash doesn't listen to Elisha, he doesn't heed any of his warnings, he doesn't follow God. 00:06:49.439 --> 00:06:58.720 However, now that he finds himself in a very tough spot, having lost this battle, Jehoash has rediscovered some good old-fashioned religion. 00:06:58.959 --> 00:07:01.120 He wants some help from God. 00:07:01.360 --> 00:07:04.959 And God loves his people, and he's going to give the king a chance. 00:07:05.120 --> 00:07:11.600 And God has all of the power, and so God can secure the victory, but he's going to ask for Jehoash's cooperation. 00:07:11.759 --> 00:07:13.839 He's going to ask for his obedience. 00:07:14.000 --> 00:07:17.519 In verse 15, Elisha responded, Get a bow and arrows. 00:07:17.680 --> 00:07:19.360 And so he got a bow and arrows. 00:07:19.439 --> 00:07:22.319 And Elisha said to the king of Israel, Grasp the bow. 00:07:22.480 --> 00:07:27.040 And the king grasped it, and Elisha put his hand on the king's hands. 00:07:27.199 --> 00:07:32.079 Now, you guys know I like to, you know, sometimes bring some uh stage metaphors up here. 00:07:32.240 --> 00:07:34.959 I really wanted to have a bow and arrow up here with me. 00:07:35.040 --> 00:07:40.319 And the team said something about insurance and liability, and I don't know how to use a bow and arrow, and someone could get really hurt. 00:07:40.480 --> 00:07:43.600 What I heard was, my staff doesn't want me to have any fun up here. 00:07:43.680 --> 00:07:45.040 That's what I heard personally. 00:07:45.279 --> 00:08:00.480 I could just show y'all, you know, the bow and he gets the bow and arrow, and then, you know, if you've ever taught your kid how to shoot, then they grab it and you kind of get behind them, you put your hands on their hands, and you help them walk through the motion. 00:08:00.560 --> 00:08:10.480 This is what Elisha on death's door gets up from his bed, takes the big stud king, and goes around him and puts his hands on the king's hands. 00:08:10.720 --> 00:08:18.879 And see, oftentimes the way that prophets would work in the Old Testament is they would prophesy through these symbolic gestures. 00:08:19.120 --> 00:08:23.519 First, they would act something out, and then they would give the prophecy. 00:08:23.600 --> 00:08:33.200 And by Elisha putting his hands on the king's hands, it is a symbol that what comes next is sealed by the word of the Lord. 00:08:33.440 --> 00:08:38.240 In verse 17, Elisha said, Open the east window, and so he opened it. 00:08:38.399 --> 00:08:40.159 And Elisha said, Shoot. 00:08:40.320 --> 00:08:41.279 So he shot. 00:08:41.440 --> 00:08:44.799 And then Elisha said, The Lord's arrow of victory. 00:08:44.960 --> 00:08:48.480 Yes, the arrow of victory over Aram. 00:08:49.279 --> 00:08:55.840 In other words, Elisha said, Open the east window and shoot your shot. 00:08:56.320 --> 00:09:12.320 Now, this is really critical because the east window was the window from where they were that was facing directly toward Aphakh, where they had just lost a decisive and humiliating battle against a foreign enemy. 00:09:12.720 --> 00:09:17.519 And often God presents us with windows of opportunity. 00:09:17.759 --> 00:09:20.240 This is a window of opportunity for the king. 00:09:20.399 --> 00:09:26.080 This is an opportunity for God to act on behalf of a king who is actively spit in the face of that God. 00:09:26.399 --> 00:09:29.039 And so Elisha says, I'm gonna put my hands on your hands. 00:09:29.120 --> 00:09:41.840 We're gonna open the east window, the window that's facing your problem, the window that's facing your worry, the window that's facing your opposition, and we are going to shoot our shot with the guidance of Elisha through the window. 00:09:42.159 --> 00:09:46.480 And there are windows of opportunity that are being presented to us all of the time. 00:09:47.360 --> 00:09:52.960 Unfortunately, a lot of times we miss our windows of opportunity because we're not aware of them. 00:09:53.919 --> 00:10:06.399 I've always said the devil, who's real and has a vested interest in you living a life that is not lived on purpose and with purpose, the devil doesn't need you to become uh the next drug lord. 00:10:06.480 --> 00:10:11.120 He doesn't need you to be a serial killer, he just needs you distracted. 00:10:13.679 --> 00:10:23.440 And we miss our windows of opportunity because the devil doesn't need us to be a level 10 criminal, he just needs us to try to get to level 100 on Candy Crush, right? 00:10:23.679 --> 00:10:25.840 He just needs us distracted. 00:10:26.559 --> 00:10:28.879 I I honestly thought that was gonna get a bigger laugh. 00:10:28.960 --> 00:10:30.399 We got some Candy Crush players in the room. 00:10:30.480 --> 00:10:31.440 I feel it. 00:10:33.840 --> 00:10:41.200 He doesn't need us to go on like a spree of trying to like rob every bank. 00:10:41.360 --> 00:10:45.840 He just needs us to scroll for about three or four hours a day to keep our heads down. 00:10:46.000 --> 00:10:52.960 He just needs us so insecure that we never look outside of ourself, that we never break away from every reflection that bears our face. 00:10:53.679 --> 00:10:55.840 He just needs us distracted. 00:10:56.399 --> 00:11:04.399 Because if we're distracted, we will miss the opportunities that God is constantly placing in the lives of his children. 00:11:05.840 --> 00:11:12.000 Now, for some of us, we see the windows of opportunity, we just don't seize the windows of opportunity. 00:11:12.320 --> 00:11:21.120 It's significant that they open towards the east because the king would not have seen the east as a window of opportunity, he would have seen it as a window of opposition. 00:11:21.679 --> 00:11:26.000 And oftentimes we're so desperate to live lives that really matter, that really impact the world. 00:11:26.080 --> 00:11:29.039 We want to see the giftings that God has placed inside of us unleashed. 00:11:29.200 --> 00:11:34.240 We want to know why we're here and how we can live a life of purpose and meaning and significance. 00:11:35.759 --> 00:11:43.519 And often we have to walk into the areas of opposition in our life to really see God begin to work through us. 00:11:43.759 --> 00:11:48.480 Some of us miss the windows of opportunity because they look just like windows of worry. 00:11:48.720 --> 00:11:50.320 We're not willing to that your best life is not going to be found where you're comfortable, that if you're willing to get uncomfortable a little bit in life, then God can begin to do things in your life and move through you in ways that will take you to places that you can't even imagine. 00:12:22.080 --> 00:12:32.720 Some of you sit in a life team every week and you're like dreaming of your like dream girl and getting married someday, and you sit in life team every week with a beautiful single woman of God. 00:12:32.799 --> 00:12:37.440 You got a window of opportunity sitting in life team every week, and you just won't shoot your shot, right? 00:12:37.759 --> 00:12:40.159 Like, it takes courage. 00:12:40.559 --> 00:12:46.240 And here's the problem we can see the window, but we don't quite know God's will. 00:12:47.679 --> 00:12:56.000 And shooting your shot when you can see the window of opportunity, but you don't yet know God's will, is called walking by faith. 00:12:56.879 --> 00:13:05.360 And we have to trust Him enough, and we have to be courageous enough, and we have to be focused enough, and we have to be secure enough to go ahead and pull it back and shoot our shot anyway. 00:13:06.159 opposition, years and years, tens of thousands of dollars, so much disappointment, so much heartache, it all fell apart. 00:14:32.799 --> 00:14:34.159 Our whole process fell apart. 00:14:35.519 --> 00:14:39.360 And then we got a call about a little girl a couple hours away, and we knew almost nothing. 00:14:39.759 --> 00:14:41.840 We didn't know about her, we didn't know about the situation. 00:14:41.919 --> 00:14:45.360 It was happening kind of outside of the foster care system. 00:14:46.720 --> 00:14:47.759 It was a window. 00:14:48.639 --> 00:14:55.519 And I thank God every day we we were willing to shoot our shot that brought Kimberly into our family and made our family complete. 00:14:55.600 --> 00:14:59.679 And you don't always see God's full will, but God sees it, and that's called faith. 00:14:59.919 --> 00:15:03.039 Scripture says God sees the ends from the beginning and the beginnings from the end. 00:15:03.120 --> 00:15:12.720 If he presents you a window of opportunity and and you push past the distraction and you see it, and you push past the worry, and you push past the fear, and you push past the insecurity, and you're willing to just line it up and shoot your shot. 00:15:12.879 --> 00:15:16.720 You have no idea what might be on the other side of that. 00:15:16.799 --> 00:15:23.679 And I also know throughout my life, there have been many, many times where I've missed those windows. 00:15:24.080 --> 00:15:24.720 That's painful. 00:15:26.080 --> 00:15:31.360 And I want to live a life where the windows come and I'm willing and ready to pull back and shoot. 00:15:31.440 --> 00:15:34.960 And I want you to live that kind of life as well. 00:15:35.919 --> 00:15:40.480 In verse 17, Elisha said, open the east window, and so he opened it, and Elisha said, Shoot, so he shot. 00:15:40.559 --> 00:15:45.840 And Elisha said, The Lord's arrow of victory, yes, the victory over Aaron. 00:15:46.799 --> 00:15:55.200 And it goes on to say, you are to strike down the Aramaeans in Aphakh until you have put an end to them. 00:15:55.840 --> 00:15:58.399 This will come to pass. 00:15:59.840 --> 00:16:01.279 This is a promise from God. 00:16:01.440 --> 00:16:08.000 They will win in Aphakh, in that one geographical location, they will have victory. 00:16:08.480 --> 00:16:11.519 That's God's power, it's his omnipotence. 00:16:12.000 --> 00:16:16.639 But in God's omnipotence, he also asks for our obedience. 00:16:17.440 --> 00:16:21.440 So far, Jehoash, to his credit, had the faith to open the window. 00:16:21.759 --> 00:16:26.159 Elisha put his hands on his hands, they both pulled back, they shot the arrow. 00:16:27.039 --> 00:16:31.279 Now, God is going to test Jehoash's faith. 00:16:31.840 --> 00:16:33.919 Does he really trust God? 00:16:34.159 --> 00:16:36.240 Is he willing to put his faith in him? 00:16:36.559 --> 00:16:40.879 Is he willing to do whatever it takes to secure a victory? 00:16:41.120 --> 00:16:49.039 This is where God's plan meets our participation, God's omnipotence and our obedience. 00:16:49.600 --> 00:16:52.639 In verse 18, Elisha said, Take the arrows. 00:16:52.799 --> 00:16:53.919 And so he took them. 00:16:54.080 --> 00:16:59.919 And Elisha said to the king of Israel, strike the ground. 00:17:01.200 --> 00:17:05.599 It's interesting, it quits calling him Jehoash and calls him the King of Israel. 00:17:05.759 --> 00:17:07.119 It's his formal title. 00:17:07.680 --> 00:17:09.359 And I think that matters. 00:17:09.839 --> 00:17:21.119 You see, they got a bow and they got arrows, and so you have a bow and then you have a quiver, and the quiver holds your arrows, and these are fresh off the shelf, so they probably have six to twelve arrows inside the quiver. 00:17:21.440 --> baby. 00:17:44.960 --> 00:17:46.559 This looks very kingly. 00:17:47.599 --> 00:17:52.880 Now, Elisha asks him to do something that looks ridiculous. 00:17:53.519 --> 00:17:59.680 I want you to take the quiver, and I want you to start pulling out arrows, and it's just what it sounds like. 00:17:59.920 --> 00:18:04.960 I literally want you to strike the ground with the arrows. 00:18:05.200 --> 00:18:10.000 Now, I don't know how much you are into archery, that's not how arrows work, okay? 00:18:10.240 --> 00:18:12.160 Not what you're supposed to do with them, right? 00:18:12.720 --> 00:18:14.480 This is a bad look. 00:18:15.119 --> 00:18:17.039 This would be something very embarrassing. 00:18:17.759 --> 00:18:20.640 You know, we we live in a culture that kind of embraces shame to some degree. 00:18:20.720 --> 00:18:23.359 That was not the culture 2,000, 3,000 years ago. 00:18:23.599 --> 00:18:26.079 This was an honor-shame culture. 00:18:26.640 --> 00:18:34.720 And as the king of Israel, you always upheld your honor, and you never allowed yourself to be shamed. 00:18:35.119 --> 00:18:39.119 You never did anything even slightly embarrassing. 00:18:39.680 --> 00:18:41.680 And this would have been embarrassing. 00:18:42.559 --> 00:18:46.880 It's foolish, it doesn't make any sense, it's not a good use of arrows, it's not a good look for the king. 00:18:47.200 --> 00:18:54.640 But this is what God has asked him to do take the quiver, take one arrow at a time, and beat the ground with it. 00:18:56.000 --> 00:18:58.400 And the king isn't into it. 00:18:59.039 --> 00:19:03.839 And so Elisha said, Take the arrows, and he took them, and Elisha said, Strike the ground. 00:19:04.079 --> 00:19:09.039 And so he struck the ground three times and he stopped. people who are willing to look foolish if it's what God asks us to do, because we have so much faith that if we look foolish, God will be shown to be faithful and his power will be unleashed in our
