Even those who have been anti-church, and maybe they've tried to look for hope in the things of the world and they couldn't find it, and the world could not establish real peace, and the world could changing, and I can promise you, at least as long as you guys let me lead here, uh, they won't change. 00:02:27.439 --> 00:02:31.439 Uh, we go after the people who don't feel like they can belong in thought, what would we think if there was a weekly program, call it a service, and all it was about was physical health. 00:05:07.279 --> 00:05:21.519 And every week, millions and millions of people came to an hour-long service where they talked about proper diet, the latest exercise trends, how to maximize your VO2, how to, how to build muscle, how to like all of it inspiring. 00:05:21.680 --> 00:05:22.959 They sang songs. 00:05:23.120 --> 00:05:25.680 It's like, we want abs, we want abs. 00:05:26.240 --> 00:05:28.240 And everyone's like, yes, yes, abs. 00:05:29.360 --> 00:05:42.319 And then they left that, let's say the service was on Sundays, and then they left that service and just went straight to Golden Corral and never stepped foot in a gym. 00:05:42.800 --> 00:05:47.439 The world would look at that movement like this is the stupidest thing. 00:05:48.319 --> 00:05:52.399 People worship, exercise, and never do it. 00:05:55.680 --> 00:06:07.360 So if we're not applying what Jesus asked us to, and we're not actually following him in the details of our life, it does beg the question: what are we doing? 00:06:08.079 --> 00:06:14.639 So life teams matter because life teams give you a small circle of people and they hold you accountable, and every week you come in, and it's very simple. 00:06:14.720 --> 00:06:17.519 We just go through a review of Sunday service. 00:06:17.920 --> 00:06:25.600 I do a lot of work for Sunday service, so it's like anywhere from a 40-minute sermon to uh a sermon so long that my producers get mad at me, right? 00:06:25.680 --> 00:06:30.879 It's somewhere in there, and then it's like you've got a lot of info, and what are you gonna do with it? 00:06:30.959 --> 00:06:33.680 And so you get in the life team and you go, here's what I'm gonna do about it. 00:06:33.759 --> 00:06:37.519 And then you show up to that same group of people the next week, and they go, What did you do about it? 00:06:37.759 --> 00:06:39.920 And it's 00:07:46.319 --> 00:08:03.759 And I needed you to know that, especially for those of you who don't have a very high change tolerance in your life right now, so that you can breathe and maybe just kind of receive at least what God has been saying to me, because I've been in a season of wrestling with God. 00:08:04.240 --> 00:08:08.639 And the season has taken some time, and it's taken me a while to get clarity. 00:08:08.720 --> 00:08:15.439 And you probably could have gotten clarity a lot faster than I did, but this has been my journey, and sometimes I'm a little slow to the jump. 00:08:15.519 --> 00:08:17.759 And so I've been wrestling with God. 00:08:18.560 --> 00:08:30.240 And the first thing I want to talk about is my own personal wrestling because without that context, I'm not sure the direction we're moving as a church will make as much sense. 00:08:30.800 --> 00:08:36.720 And so recently, uh God kind of pointed this pattern out in my life. 00:08:36.799 --> 00:08:39.919 It's this years old, and then 10 years it showed up again when I was 17 years old, and then 10 years it showed up when I was 27 years old. 00:08:51.519 --> 00:08:56.559 And it's like, this is my life story, and I've I've I've been through what we do in the academy, I've told my life story a bunch of times. 00:08:56.720 --> 00:09:00.320 I never saw this pattern until maybe January of this year. 00:09:00.399 transparent, I uh I'm always hesitant to share, but it's an important part of my story, and it's it's a part of uh where my calling came from to be uh a pastor and a preacher. 00:09:22.159 --> 00:09:33.279 Um when I was seven, like you know, every seven-year-old boy has some heroes, you know, it's like athletes or superheroes that they read about in the comics, or you know, everyone has some heroes, and and I did as well. 00:09:33.519 --> 00:09:34.000 You guys know this. 00:09:34.080 --> 00:09:41.840 Michael Jordan was like my sports hero, you know, but like the top of my hero hierarchy was my grandfather. 00:09:42.720 --> 00:09:45.919 My maternal grandfather was a Southern Baptist preacher. 00:09:46.000 --> 00:09:50.559 And I don't know if any of you came up Southern Baptist, uh, but boy, it is hellfire and brimstone, man. 00:09:50.639 --> 00:09:54.720 And he would he would get after it, and he spent his early years working on the railroad. 00:09:54.799 --> 00:10:00.480 So out of like all the digits you're supposed to have on your fingers, he had like half of them, you know? 00:10:00.799 --> 00:10:08.799 And his right index finger, just the very top digit, was at about like a 45 degree angle, like this, kind of like this, you know? 00:10:08.960 --> 00:10:13.360 And man, he would preach and point that crooked finger at you. 00:10:13.600 --> 00:10:15.679 It's like God spoke through that finger, bro. 00:10:15.759 --> 00:10:17.360 I it was crazy. 00:10:17.519 --> 00:10:21.440 And I would watch him, and I was just like in awe, you know. 00:10:22.000 --> 00:10:29.919 And uh I had great parents, I was brought up in the church, and when I was little, uh, I loved the Lord. 00:10:30.159 --> 00:10:34.000 I mean, I passionately loved the Lord. 00:10:34.480 --> 00:10:39.519 We went down to South Texas, small town near Alice, I would see Texas. 00:10:39.600 --> 00:10:42.240 It's where my mom was raised, where my grandparents lived. 00:10:42.399 --> 00:10:50.159 And we went in because my grandpa was older, I think he was around 80, and he was going in for what was supposed to be kind of a routine operation. 00:10:50.240 --> 00:10:52.960 Uh he had had an aneurysm, they were gonna take care of it. 00:10:53.120 --> 00:10:57.759 But when you're 80, you know, routine operations have a lot of risk. 00:10:58.000 --> grandpa and granny, as really old people do sometimes, slept in different rooms at this point, you know, when they were saying good night, he prophesied over my life. 00:11:51.679 --> 00:11:56.080 He said, I don't know what Clayton will do, but I know it will be for the Lord. 00:11:56.240 --> 00:11:58.080 And I know it will be in ministry. 00:11:59.200 --> 00:12:01.039 And the next day he died. know, come down to the front. 00:12:29.759 --> 00:12:33.279 And uh, I I had already believed in Jesus at this point. 00:12:33.360 --> 00:12:38.799 Um, but I walked to the front with a conviction that had moved me out of my body. 00:12:38.960 --> 00:12:53.440 It's like I didn't even want to go down front, I was a very shy kid, and I went to the pastor who was preaching in my grandfather's old between seven and seventeen, I had moved so far away from that calling. 00:13:13.440 --> 00:13:20.639 I was just living for myself, and I was living for the world, and I was living in rebellion, and I was living with an incredible amount of guilt for how I was living. 00:13:21.600 --> 00:13:27.600 And I believed God was very mad at me because I knew God and I knew I was disobeying him all of the And at 17, I got very sick. 00:13:39.440 --> 00:13:45.360 And the summer before my senior year, I spent a lot of that summer in the hospital, and they couldn't really figure out what was going on. 00:13:45.519 --> 00:13:51.519 And so, after a large number of tests and procedures, I was diagnosed with an incurable stomach disease. 00:13:51.600 --> 00:13:56.879 It's an autoimmune disease, it's in the GI tract, and it changed my life. 00:13:57.600 --> 00:14:01.440 And it changed my life because I would be, in my mind, sick forever. 00:14:02.639 --> 00:14:05.919 It changed my life also because 00:14:41.759 I was full-time in the ministry, it wasn't long after that, in my 20s, that I met Katie and my kids, started a family, moved to San Antonio. 00:14:43.039 --> 00:14:46.879 I was seven and seventeen, and then twenty seven. 00:14:47.440 --> 00:14:52.320 At 27, I was helping lead a very, very large church, thousands and thousands of people. 00:14:52.480 --> 00:14:55.919 And I didn't know it at the time, but that church had become an idol to me. 00:14:57.279 --> 00:15:01.440 I could not imagine life without being in leadership of that church. 00:15:01.759 --> 00:15:09.840 And we talk about it and we get so clear on it here, in part because I was so unclear for so long that the church is just the movement of God's people. 00:15:10.159 --> 00:15:11.279 It's just us. 00:15:11.600 --> planted as a direct, a direct line, like A to B from my stay in that hospital. 00:15:56.799 --> 00:16:01.039 And God would once again redeem something that seems so bad and use it for my good. was in an army hospital. 00:17:12.799 --> 00:17:13.920 This is where I was diagnosed. 00:17:14.000 --> 00:17:18.960 And if you've ever spent time in an army hospital, they don't always have the best 00:17:33.599 The doctor told me that my life expectancy was down to 60, and that the odds are I would die from stomach cancer before 60 years old. 00:17:34.079 --> 00:17:36.960 He actually said there was a 92% chance. 00:17:37.119 --> 00:17:38.960 It's seared into my mind. 00:17:39.839 --> 00:17:43.440 That's tough to hear at 17, but God used it. 00:17:44.000 --> 00:17:51.920 And in that moment,
