it's your first time, you probably think we should be like at the end of Luke. 00:00:49.520 --> 00:00:53.280 No, we're in chapter four, 26 weeks later. 00:00:53.439 --> 00:00:58.399 We've been going through this very, very slow, and we've called this series the Chosen King. 00:00:58.560 --> 00:01:04.719 This has been all about the preparation that went into Jesus beginning his ministry. 00:01:04.879 --> 00:01:06.319 And this matters to us. 00:01:06.480 --> 00:01:07.280 You guys know this. 00:01:07.439 --> 00:01:12.799 We start with the belief at MetaCurch that God created you on purpose and with purpose. 00:01:12.879 --> 00:01:18.319 It's no accident that you're here on planet earth and God has something for you to do here. 00:01:18.480 --> 00:01:28.640 And so we are watching very carefully over this series all the preparation for Jesus to step into his purpose so we can learn how to step into our purpose as well. 00:01:28.879 --> 00:01:38.319 Now, last week, Jesus began his ministry, and Luke told the very first story, and he let us know he's telling it out of chronological order. 00:01:38.480 --> 00:01:40.000 He's doing that for two reasons. 00:01:40.239 --> 00:01:49.519 The first reason we saw last week, Luke wanted Jesus to say who he was and why he had come to earth out of his own mouth and his own words. 00:01:49.760 --> 00:01:51.359 We watched that happen last week. 00:01:51.599 --> 00:01:57.599 Jesus went back to his hometown, Nazareth, very few people who lived there, the backwoods of the backwoods. 00:01:57.760 --> 00:02:14.080 He went to the synagogue into their worship service, and he read where he wanted to read out of the prophet Isaiah, that he was the anointed one, the Messiah, the chosen king who had come to preach the good news, to open the eyes of the blind, and to set free the oppressed. 00:02:14.319 --> 00:02:24.879 After he read that, he sat down, the eyes of the synagogue were on him, and in this sacred, holy moment, Jesus said, This guy, Isaiah prophesied about. 00:02:30.319 --> 00:02:31.280 This is incredible. 00:02:31.360 --> 00:02:33.360 I mean, imagine being there in that moment. 00:02:33.520 --> 00:02:38.400 This is the apex of God's plan for the rescue and redemption of humanity. 00:02:38.560 --> 00:02:40.800 You happen to be there in Nazareth that day. 00:02:40.960 --> 00:02:47.039 Everyone sat in stunned silence, their eyes were glued on him, they're in this holy moment, this sacred moment. 00:02:47.199 --> 00:03:00.240 And so you would expect God comes to earth in human flesh, he shows back up to his hometown, he lets them know who he is, and so of course, they're in awe, they believe in him, they worship him, they make him king, the end of the gospel. 00:03:01.360 --> 00:03:09.199 That's what you would think, but instead, what we're gonna see today is they question him, they reject him, by the end, they try to kill him. 00:03:09.599 --> 00:03:14.159 And so let's look because they do respond This is Joseph's son. 00:04:44.560 --> 00:04:48.560 Jesus was like our local carpenter until a few minutes ago. 00:04:48.800 --> 00:04:50.720 Actually, Jesus, we've been wondering where you are. expectations are met, we are satisfied. 00:05:42.879 --> 00:05:47.600 When expectations are exceeded, we are happy, excited, joyful. 00:05:47.839 --> 00:05:58.160 When expectations are not met, when expectations are broken, we are frustrated, angry, enraged, confused, discontent, depressed, anxious. 00:05:58.319 --> 00:06:07.360 Behind every single emotion is an expectation, which means if you are feeling emotions and you don't know what to do with them, you should search under them and find the expectation that has been broken. 00:06:07.600 --> 00:06:11.439 Let me explain how this kind of works out in your everyday life. 00:06:11.759 --> 00:06:19.199 You can have different expectations for different people in your friend group, and you will respond differently to the same activity from 00:06:27.759 The friend starts showing up, everybody followed the rules. 00:06:27.920 --> 00:06:29.839 Two friends don't bring a gift. 00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:34.639 The first one you have high expectations of, you're very disappointed, they ruined the night. 00:06:34.800 --> 00:06:37.759 Now we don't have gifts, you're very cold shouldered now. 00:06:38.000 --> 00:06:40.800 Ten minutes later, the other friend shows up late. 00:06:40.959 --> 00:06:42.319 They also don't have a gift. 00:06:42.480 --> 00:06:44.319 You had low expectations of them. 00:06:44.480 --> 00:06:45.759 You're like, don't even worry about it. 00:06:45.839 --> 00:06:47.279 As a matter of fact, I already bought you one. 00:06:47.360 --> 00:06:49.519 I knew you were gonna forget one in the first place. 00:07:05.040 --> 00:07:15.519 Even as an adult, your mom and dad can give you the same advice about the same thing in the same week with one parent, you'll be like, that is really sage advice. and we are once again despondent for a month. 00:08:25.439 --> 00:08:29.920 The Browns can win four games, and their fans are like pretty solid. 00:08:30.399 --> 00:08:31.439 She could chase it. 00:08:32.320 --> 00:08:34.240 It's just different expectations. 00:08:35.600 --> 00:08:40.480 Our finances, whether or not we feel content or not, it's not typically about the money we have in the bank. 00:08:40.559 --> 00:08:44.879 It's about the expectation you had for how much money you should have in the bank by your age that you're at right now. 00:08:45.120 --> 00:08:48.320 It's all expectation because expectation drives all of your emotions. 00:08:48.559 --> 00:08:50.559 I know we've got a lot of young married people. 00:08:50.639 --> 00:08:52.960 Uh, I married some of y'all, you know. 00:08:53.279 --> 00:09:07.679 I train our pastors and staff when we do premarital work to make sure we tell these fiances, your first couple years of marriage, it's going to be a painful process of uncovering all of your unspoken expectations. 00:09:08.799 --> 00:09:14.799 You didn't even maybe realize the expectations you were bringing in, but you won't speak them out. 00:09:14.960 --> 00:09:20.639 They will fall below those expectations, and you will live in a lot of tension your first couple years of marriage. 00:09:21.120 --> 00:09:30.559 This alone could change your life to realize that behind every one of your emotions that is driving you into chaos, there is an expectation. 00:09:30.879 --> 00:09:44.960 And so the difference between someone who is happy the majority of their life and someone who is miserable the majority of their life, please listen to this, is the happy person typically has about 90% less expectations than the miserable person. 00:09:47.120 --> 00:09:51.200 You have the power to audit your expectations. 00:09:51.919 --> 00:09:56.240 A huge percentage of your expectations are unreasonable and irrational. 00:09:56.399 --> 00:09:59.919 You can We don't want to do this in marriage because it doesn't feel sexy enough, it doesn't feel romantic enough. 00:10:07.840 --> 00:10:11.679 Your spouse is the only person on earth you actually expect to be able to read your mind. 00:10:11.759 --> 00:10:18.000 Like when you say I do and they say I do, God magically makes you both psychics, so you never have to speak out your expectations. 00:10:18.080 and your husband wants to say in the finances, and you are beyond offended and you don't know why. 00:11:12.720 --> 00:11:15.279 It's an expectation that came from how you were raised. 00:11:15.519 --> 00:11:26.320 You grew up in a home, your dad didn't even know where the laundry was, he didn't know where the washing machine was, and now your wife wants you to fold a shirt and you act like she just asked for a kidney. 00:11:26.399 --> 00:11:28.159 It's like, where did that come from? 00:11:28.320 --> 00:11:32.159 It's an expectation, and the expectation traces back. 00:11:33.360 --> 00:11:36.159 Expectations come from familiarity. 00:11:36.399 --> 00:11:38.399 So here's let me let me piece it together. 00:11:38.559 --> 00:11:41.360 Familiarity creates expectation. 00:11:42.320 --> 00:11:45.039 Expectation creates emotion. 00:11:46.399 --> 00:11:50.799 And so we become familiar with people and we set those expectations on them. 00:11:50.960 --> 00:11:53.200 Let me give you two sides of the spectrum. 00:11:53.440 --> 00:11:58.000 One of the hardest things to be is a hardworking, dependable employee. 00:11:58.080 --> 00:11:59.039 And here's why. 00:11:59.279 --> 00:12:08.080 Because people become familiar with your work ethic, they become familiar with your output, and so if you are that employee, let me tell you what happens to you. 00:12:08.240 --> really understand today's passage without this framing. 00:13:05.519 --> 00:13:10.000 Familiarity has created the expectation of the synagogue in Nazareth. 00:13:10.720 --> 00:13:15.519 See, Jesus isn't rejected at Nazareth because they can't really figure him out. 00:13:15.679 --> 00:13:23.759 It's not because they don't know him, he's rejected at Nazareth specifically because they feel like they already know everything about him. 00:13:24.639 --> 00:13:27.360 So let's look at it in the text one more time. 00:13:28.480 --> 00:13:35.279 It says, they were all speaking well of him, they were amazed by him, but they said, Isn't this Joseph's son? 00:13:35.679 --> 00:13:37.279 That's familiarity. 00:13:37.360 --> 00:13:39.120 Let's see the expectation. 00:13:39.919 --> 00:13:47.360 And so Jesus said to them, No doubt, you will quote this proverb to me, doctor, heal yourself. 00:13:48.399 --> 00:13:52.879 Now, this is uh an ancient, famous parable. 00:13:53.200 --> 00:14:00.720 We see evidence of this writing, this story told all over the ancient Near East, as far back as 600 years before Christ. 00:14:00.879 --> 00:14:09.759 Here's how the story goes there's a doctor who comes into the village, and the doctor is handing out advice every second of the day. 00:14:09.919 --> 00:14:24.399 He's handing out cures, he's giving prescriptions, he's offering medicine, and yet, here's the twist: this doctor who can't stop giving medical advice is also the most sick person in the village. 00:14:25.679 --> 00:14:33.360 And so everyone's hearing this advice from someone, and they say, Doctor, if we're gonna believe your medicine, heal yourself first. 00:14:34.240 --> 00:14:36.000 You guys have experienced this? 00:14:36.159 --> 00:14:46.879 Uh, this is your friend who, even though you're like five years into a pretty happy marriage and they can't seem to get to a second date with anyone, they keep giving you relationship advice, you know? 00:14:47.039 --> 00:14:49.279 They're like, bro, here's what you have to do, all right? 00:14:49.440 --> 00:14:52.240 Uh they've watched some like YouTube bros, right? 00:14:52.320 --> 00:14:55.279 So they're like, if you want to keep like, here, it's like, look, dude, why don't you get to a second date and then maybe I will take some relationship with it? 00:15:07.279 --> 00:15:17.200 This is your coworker who is in more debt and cannot steward his finances at all, but every other month he's telling you about a new get rich quick scheme. 00:15:17.759 --> 00:15:22.799 It's like, why don't you take care of your finances and then 00:16:02.080 Enough examples. 00:16:05.200 --> 00:16:08.720 So they're looking at Jesus, and Jesus goes, I already know what y'all are thinking. 00:16:08.879 --> 00:16:10.960 Well, how exactly does this pertain to Jesus? 00:16:11.120 --> 00:16:11.519 Of course. 00:16:11.600 --> 00:16:13.519 We have to read the rest of verse 23. 00:16:13.679 --> 00:16:16.879 He said, No doubt you will quote this proverb, doctor, heal yourself. 00:16:17.039 --> 00:16:22.639 What we've heard took place in Capernaum, do here in your hometown also. 00:16:22.879 --> 00:16:27.919 I'm gonna keep reminding you, Luke is telling this story out of chronological order. 00:16:28.240 --> 00:16:35.600 Jesus has already been traveling around Galilee, he's been preaching, he's been doing miracles, and he's been healing. 00:16:36.000 --> 00:16:38.399 Jesus spent some time in Capernaum. 00:16:38.639 --> 00:16:44.720 That's where he would stay in the house of Peter's mother-in-law, Peter's mother-in-law, who is nearing death, and Jesus healed her. 00:16:44.879 --> 00:16:53.360 You read in Mark's first couple of chapters, he's in Capernaum, and people are bringing the sick to him, and he is healing everyone who gets in his vicinity. 00:16:53.600 --> 00:16:55.840 He's healing people by the dozens. 00:16:57.200 --> 00:16:59.519 And so we have familiarity, isn't this Joseph's son? 00:16:59.679 --> 00:17:01.360 And then we have expectation. 00:17:01.919 --> 00:17:04.240 And what exactly are the expectations? 00:17:05.039 --> 00:17:08.559 The first expectation is look, man, we know you. 00:17:09.119 --> 00:17:17.119 We know your mom, we know your dad, we know your siblings, we watched you grow up in these streets, you've been in this synagogue your whole life. 00:17:17.359 --> 00:17:19.839 We know you, we are familiar with you. 00:17:20.079 --> 00:17:27.440 So we're not just gonna buy off of faith that you are the Messiah we've been waiting for for a thousand years. 00:17:27.680 --> 00:17:31.440 We're not just gonna buy because you like quoted the right thing in Isaiah. 00:17:31.680 --> 00:17:38.000 So if you want us to believe you are God's last and final chosen king, prove it. it is said his job will be to bless all of the nations of the world. 00:28:18.079 --> 00:28:23.599 Yes, he will come first to Israel, but he will be used to bless all the nations of the world. 00:28:23.680 --> 00:28:36.319 Here's the problem: the people in Jesus' day were more familiar with their pain and more familiar with their culture than they were with the revealed word of God.
