Wake Up Call
David is an old radio "dj" (disc jockey) getting his brand of talk and humor on the airways since 1969. It’s the animals of the planet responsibility to fertilize the earth, it’s David’s to fertilize the airways. Given the nickname the General because of his last name which he had to convert daGaneral to franchise infringement. Making a reluctant transition to a completely different medium and inviting you to take the journey with him. In each episode he will be talking about life, society, music and everything in between and you might be lucky enough to get a new recipe or two. Episodes could include local guests with interviews about their lives.
After a year and a half rambling, Laren "Ren" Harris joined him, and they bring a whole new format to an ageing radio program. Ren started as David's engineer at KPRT-FM. She has vast experience in acting and is extremely witty. She brings in a fresh perspective and keeps David in line. She is a sci-fi nerd complete with customs. She has operated a bakery as well and they both love to cook!!! Each episode is designed to bring awareness, “wake you up”!
Based out of Farmington, NM located in the beautiful northwestern corner of New Mexico, close to the Four Corners which include Arizona, Colorado & Utah. Podcasts are recorded live, uncut, raw & uncensored. Join Ren & David as they take a deep dive into the ramblings of life.

SPEAKER_06You are the power.
SPEAKER_02Oh, you are awful.
SPEAKER_06Everybody's going for the brand new parts of the big bones. Another new year is upon us. And like David's ever-increasing hairline and Ren's ever-decreasing music with him, the Wake of Pole is expanding. As we start our fourth year, not only can you catch this informative program on local radio stations like K-S-J-E-F M Farmington, New Mexico, your Sunday morning will never be the same. But all the major podcast items like Amazon Music, Apple, Google Podcasts, just an interview. Better still, it's all on our own website, IncoScontest.com. Set your listening device to download. Sit back, strap in, turn on, tune in, and bring it up. Now, without further ado, ado, ado, is Ren and David.
SPEAKER_08We're recording. So we're live. We're live. Were you afraid to say anything, Ryan?
SPEAKER_01I learned to shut my mouth until you tell me we're recording.
SPEAKER_08Well, listen, we are doing our 100th. I get I can't tell you, I can't believe that it's uh it's been a hundred. I'm sure you can't either, because uh it was your uh it was it was actually your brain child that got me started. Yeah, you were. You were on the first couple, as a matter of fact. Um and with my frustration with that whole thing. But Ryan Woodard, I I appreciate you taking time out of your day to come down to do this. My pleasure because I know you got a pretty full day today, too. Well, we both do. Yeah. Later today. Yeah, later today, which this is gonna air after that, but later today, Ryan and I both are doing Shindig for the Sheriff. Uh Ryan doing it on the musical side, they won't let me sing, so I'm going to watch Ryan in Island style. You sang one song though with reason, didn't you? I did. Yeah. Um what was that song? I sang um uh Jailhouse Rock in Elvis 10. Oh yeah. Yeah. But I also did some vocals. Believe it or not, I did vocals for one of the songs that were recorded in your dad's studio. I did backup, I did the deep under the boardwalk. Oh, okay. Yeah. And then I had that was the first time I'd ever done anything like that. So I had your dad pump the volume up on my part, so I could take it to my wife at the time. I said, Listen, who do you think that is? She goes, I don't know, who is that? Man, he sounds really professional. He kept going on and on. I think Bill called her and told her she was just butter in my muffin, is all right. Butter in your bread. That's right. Thank you for that. But anyway, I I tell you, this all started um as a talk, and then we got some uh by adding a radio. Um and Scott McClan was here a little bit earlier, he'll be back. Um but we we added them so I could play music and I don't have to worry about uh having all the licensing. But I also brought Eric Campbell in today. I appreciate you taking time out of your segment. And I know you've got to run like uh almost uh right after we're done. You got someplace else to be.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, my baby cousin starting her music career tonight. Your baby cousin? Yeah. Music career. Yeah, you got a flautist? A flutista? Flautist. Flautist. A flutista.
SPEAKER_08You're thinking of a barista, maybe. I like flutista better than boxes. I do too. So uh a flautist. Yeah. To me, that sounds like you know, like a fajita. So that's something you would eat.
SPEAKER_09That's how that's how I feel too. Because you're thinking flauta.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, exactly. The actual version of uh the taquito. Yeah, yeah, exactly. So anyway. Yeah. Well, listen, I I'm I'm gonna I'm I wanted to get you guys to play some. We're gonna talk, we're gonna have a good time. We'll probably try to get some of the other crowd uh over uh to talk as well. We got hors d'oeuvres over there, the red coats are gonna be here later, they're gonna cut the ribbon on inner Wisconsin.
SPEAKER_05Redcoats, it's like, I don't know if I want those people here in my America right now. Probably means something else, but everything going on in the world, man. Red coats? What's that? What is that?
SPEAKER_09Yeah, no, I should have brought my blue bandana.
SPEAKER_02No, no, that'd probably been kind of cool.
SPEAKER_09You come Paul Ghetto with the blue bandana. That'd have been great. I'm not that kind of gangster, no.
SPEAKER_08And uh Rin, I poor Ren is sitting over there trying to test, so I'm behind the boards. You guys are gonna have to have patience with me. She knows it a whole lot better than I do. So, all right. Let's uh and we're and we're recording at our recording home, Better Homes and Gardens uh Real Estate, downtown Farmington. Beautiful downtown Farmington. Also, I want to really quick give a shout out to Julie. She's uh been busting her butt over there uh getting everything together. And I have uh Elaine Morrison from Laney's Tiny Tea House is putting together some tea. So we've got tea and crumpets. Kind of. I thought we said you had to say that was a British accent. Oh, I don't think I can. I'll have to get Ren to do crumpets. There you go. Tea and crumpets. Excuse me, better. Can I have some of them crumpets? That's right. Yes, you can. You're talking about the food, right? Not mine. Not your crumpets. Okay, good. Well, listen, I um I Eric, are you ready to play one? Is it gonna is it are you under too much pressure? Because Ryan is gonna stare at you the entire time.
SPEAKER_01That's okay. Oh, no. I'm glad he's going first because like takes the pressure off of you? Not at all. Because get the good stuff out of the way, and then after you hear him and be like, oh, that's great, and then they'll turn off.
SPEAKER_05Says the guy playing for the sheriff's thing tonight. Whatever.
SPEAKER_09They didn't call me, they called you, homie. Oh, we're gonna have a throwdown. I can see it already.
SPEAKER_08All right, Eric Well, what do you I don't care, man? You can play the original, you can play whatever. You can play whatever whatever you want.
SPEAKER_05Windows stars ain't shining bright. You feel like you lost your way. Or you can let you so shine, just like my daddy used to say, He used to say, So shine, it's better than sunshine, it's better than moonshine, and damn sure better than me. And I think we don't mind. We all get this way sometimes. You gotta let your soul shine, shine through the break of day. I grew up thinking I had a mate. I'm gonna make it on my home. But life can take the strongest breath, make it feel so long. Now and then I feel a cold breeze. I burned my head and voice. I think that's what my daddy said. He said so for the darkness, but for the time you let through sunshine, it's better than sunshine, it's better than moonshine, and damn sure better than red. And the people talk about We all feel this waste. You can't let you talk shine. We can straw, we can straw, it's better, it's better than a big waste time, you can let you sound the quick day.
SPEAKER_08I don't know whether I mentioned April is here as well, and uh Gabriel Lucero is sitting behind me as well, who's been on the show, too. Um Eric, I just I dude, uh Ryan was I put you in. I you take take me out of the way. No, no, no, no, no, no. No, you're your harmony, your harmony.
SPEAKER_01Dude, you have such a good voice. Thank you. It makes me mad that you can sing that all.
SPEAKER_05Well, I watched the new edition documentary over the weekend, and so now I'm like, I can do what those guys can do.
SPEAKER_01I can do that.
SPEAKER_05I've been singing poison all weekend. Bobby Brown hits. Really? I've been stretching, I've been stretching them.
SPEAKER_08Yeah. Well, I I'm telling you right now, if I if I swang that way, uh, I'd be coming after your wife would be in trouble. I'd be coming after you.
SPEAKER_09He's like, don't even get me started.
SPEAKER_08Um, but I I I don't know. Uh I Eric, you're the responsible for our music. I love that. And here's what I like about Eric. He I asked him to put make me a sound bed, right? And so he kind of drugged his feet and got he but he got it done. He goes, Listen, I I'm gonna send you this, but it's a rough draft. And I'll never forget it. He's like, I'm not, you know, I'm I'm if you don't like it, it's okay. I don't know how many times, kind of like you when it comes to that Ryan. He's like, if you don't like it, it's fine, it's fine, it's fine. And uh I listened to him, I'm like, it's perfect. Yeah, it's a it's just all it is is music track. That's all what I needed. It was absolutely and it's uniquely ours. So I I can't thank you enough for that stuff, man.
SPEAKER_05Well, it was fun. It was fun, and it got me back doing stuff too, because that too that's kind of the funny thing about musicians to me.
SPEAKER_01Because I mean, I can go play a show, fill the house, make whatever restaurant I'm playing for, make them money, make me money. Like, I can put on like a great show, and I'll go home and think, man, I could have done better. You know, it's and it's just it's never good enough. Hey, lay down a track and to Eric or to someone like myself, it's like, yeah, it's just a rough draft, you know, just tell me what you think, and you might listen to it. And most people would listen to it and be like, that's perfect. What's what's the issue with that? That's never good enough. We always want to do that.
SPEAKER_08Well, that's that's a good thing, though. There's nothing wrong with that. You know, I asked Brian Howe one time of Bad Company, the late Brian Howe. I said, What do you think is your best work so far? I mean, he had some great hits when he was with Bad Company, had some good hits when he was uh alone, and he looked at me as this long pause and he said, My next one? You know, we're talking about a guy that, you know, had some number in one hits with bad company, and he's just like, eh, my next one. Yeah. So should always be striving, I guess. I think it's never done. Yeah. Yeah. Um, all right, Ryan, I'm I'm gonna put you on the pause. You don't even want to, huh? Should we just do should we just close the show now and go on about our business?
SPEAKER_01Thank you for listening. I try again next week.
SPEAKER_08You don't give yourself and I've told you this before, you don't give yourself enough credit, man. You're oh thank you. I you know, I I love you, matter of fact. I I and I know you put stuff up on uh Facebook or not Facebook Instagram, and then sometimes it gets like you take it away, and it's like Ryan, what happened? Well, I I Because it's never good enough.
SPEAKER_09What's your Instagram handle? Bull crap.
SPEAKER_08Like one on us, Ryan.
SPEAKER_04Sometimes I let down the moon, and thank God I'm breathing. Then I pray, don't take me soon, Cause I am here for reason. Sometimes in my tears I drown, but never let it get me down. Negativity surrounds me. I know someday I'll turn around me. All my life I've been waiting for, I've been crying for, for the people to say that they don't wanna fight no more, to be no more, and our children will play one day, one day, one day, one day, one day, one day. Born and raised in South Detroit. She took the midnight dream of Jimmy. Onto the midnight sun, we just go round and round on my mind restless heart, sleep on tonight, singing on my blood Seen and Royal Place to Sun family write down the last thing you and me know what it's supposed to be. Sometimes I lay to the moon and think I'm breathing. Then I pray don't take me soon, cause I am here for a reason.
SPEAKER_08You know, I I can't marry you. That was super neat, but oh thanks. Because you're family. So I'm gonna just have to come over there and kiss you right on the lips. Right here, buddy. Yeah, yeah. I yeah, that was fantastic, Ryan.
SPEAKER_01I play I played at a coffee shop last night for a couple hours. This new encore coffee that just opened up.
SPEAKER_08I'm booking gigs for them. I booked Gabe back here. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Good.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I just played there last night, so my voice is a little blown out. I apologize.
SPEAKER_05Oh, man, man! That part where you were singing about the road ain't no place to raise a kid. I was heart-wrenching together.
SPEAKER_01And every and more importantly, every wife or husband or someone who's in a relationship or a uh child of a musician understands that song. Because I feel like when uh I just point down his name, Steve Perry from the journey. I feel like when he wrote that song, it was a it was a love letter to his wife. Because being in love with the music man ain't always what it's supposed to be. Everybody thinks it's gonna be this glamorous thing, but really being a musician and being uh touring musician or just someone here who's hitting the streets or busking, like it's dirty work. It's tough. We have to get there hours before gigs, set everything out. I mean, for a hundred bucks, a three-hour game, a three-hour day where we're gonna make a hundred dollars sometimes takes us eight hours of our day. And I can't tell how many times I've missed New Year's parties, Mother's Days, because I'm playing out somewhere, so it's it's a tough being music. I'm not gonna say it's a tough being musician, I absolutely love it, but sometimes I do feel bad for my wife and my kid and my family. Well, anyway, let's talk about Steve Perry somewhere.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, I I know I know that your wife is extremely supportive, and I know your wife is extremely supportive too, but I'm sure that you probably get it every once in a while when they like, where have you been?
SPEAKER_05Are you ever coming home again? You look at your calendar and it's like Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and then the next week and another Saturday, you're like, I'm really gonna have to get some flowers or something. It is it is hard. It's I mean, and we're not, I mean, I'm not famous. You know, I'm not doing anything crazy or making a ton of money doing this.
SPEAKER_08You are now, you both are now, you know, and you know this from podcasting. Yeah, yeah, you're yeah, the hundredth episode, and it's freaking worldwide. That's right. Now, I didn't invite just anybody to be on the hundredth episode, I bought I invited you to. So no offense over there, Gabriel. Well, I have to say, I I brought a present for you for your hundredth show. Did you really? Oh my god.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. You're gonna be you're gonna be with uh Island Style tonight. Darry's actually driving up currently the other half of Island Style. And so these are from Hawaii.
SPEAKER_08Oh my god.
SPEAKER_01100% legitimate from Hawaii. These are special cuckooe nuts.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, cocooin nuts. I couldn't remember the name. I'll I'll wear these for sure again.
SPEAKER_01Um thanks for having me.
SPEAKER_08These are like good luck. Um yeah, they're really cool. Sure thing. Put them on. I will. Put your nuts on them. All right, ladies and gentlemen, I have my nuts on. And with that, uh, I'm gonna get Eric. Would you do another tune real quick? I'm gonna switch. So don't ignore Rin and I. We're gonna switch places to get her back over here. Okay? All right. So it's all you, buddy. Now I need you to feel this dead air. Ryan, you just talk while he's getting ready so that we can feel many of you crying.
SPEAKER_05And brother, brother, brother. There's far too many of you die here. You know you can't find a way to bring some love in here today. Five, there's no need to escalate. You see why it's nothing answer for only luck you can't pay. You know you've got to find a way to bring some understanding here to tell you. Come on now, pick it light and pick your sight. Don't punish me with brutality. Talk to me so you can see what's going on. What's going on? What's going on? I wanna know what's going on. There's no need to complicate who are they to judge us simply cause your hair is long. You know you got to find a way to bring some love Pick it lines and pick it signs. Don't punish me with brutality. Come on and talk to me so you can see what's going on. What's going on? What's going on? I wanna know what's going on.
SPEAKER_08They're complimenting you on your nails.
SPEAKER_07Thank you. I didn't even hear, I just heard fingers, and I was like, they better not be calling me a butterfinger.
SPEAKER_05I'm excellent at this board. The pinky and the pointer, man, you point with authority with that thing.
SPEAKER_07I sure do.
SPEAKER_01That's why I wear them. Do you do the double point with the other hand or looking at the other? Oh my gosh, no, I'm gonna.
SPEAKER_07Like in Breakfast Club, I got you for two words. I'm gonna do that now.
SPEAKER_08All right, so um so what have you been doing, Ryan? I'm gonna pick on you a little bit. Uh let's talk about let's talk about you you don't just do Island Soul, you do a lot of independent gigs by yourself, I know. Uh and Darren's gotta come from uh hell. Like 400 miles away. Yeah, it's well that that's hell. Well, Arizona, all almost the majority of Arizona is like living in hell.
SPEAKER_07Oh yeah, Phoenix in the summertime.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god. Um he always calls and rubs it in like in the middle of winter when it's 12 degrees outside with the wind chill factor. He always calls me up and he was like, You'll never guess how warm it is, and I'm on the golf course. I'm like, yeah, but you also have to put up with 115 degrees for like a month straight.
SPEAKER_07Not being able to leave the house.
SPEAKER_08I don't I don't I I play golf, but I wouldn't I I don't ever think I'd want to play when it was over 100 degrees. I mean, I don't know, I'm like a fair weather golfer, 80 degrees, and we're good to go. Alright, so what else have you been doing? Because I know you've been doing like an encore cafe here uh locally. Um where else have you been playing? I I know you've been playing a couple other games.
SPEAKER_01So I kind of took a little little bit of time off to kind of once again work on the craft and perfect some things and kind of change my perspective on music a little bit. Um one of the things I pride myself on is I can sit at any restaurant, bar, grill, or whatever and just I have 800 songs in my iPad that I can pull out at any time, but I get bored playing them. So a lot of times I'll just look out at the audience and just to say, give me some name an artist, name a genre or whatever, and just see what I can do and what I can kind of pull out of my butt. But instead of doing that, because I don't feel like I'm you know, I can fake my boy through like a Garth Brooks song, but it's not gonna be up to 100%. It's not gonna be that good. Right. So I've been really kind of refocusing myself on I still want to play songs people know, I still want to play songs that people are gonna enjoy. I'm not gonna play some like, oh, this is some indie guy who wrote this song 45 years ago that nobody's ever heard of. Like a guy named Nick Drake, who's an amazing player and singer and songwriter, but nobody knows who he is. Um I've just been trying to work on that. So I took a little bit of a break, and also because of the cold weather, most of these places kind of shut down their live music. COVID had them shut down too. They're opening up like crazy now. Oh yeah. So I'm I've gotten monthly standing gigs at um country club. I'm working with Rubios to get monthly standing gigs there for solo gigs. Uh the family band broke up that I was in. Uh, we lost our guitar, our guitar player moved to Florida, and then my sister kind of took it upon herself to say, well, maybe this is the time to kind of cut it out. That's too bad. After three years of us playing together, we kind of shut that down. But we're looking to retool that. I'm also playing with Darren. I'm driving down to Arizona, he's driving up here right now, so we're gonna be doing some stuff, and then mostly just solo weeks.
SPEAKER_08The job you have now gives you that kind of flexibility a little bit on weekends now, before you were kind of locked up on weekends having to work. That's right. I know. Or on burden his soul. You know, it looks like I just want to say something about Ryan. Well, I'm on leave right now, so I like to go by the place and honk and wave. Yeah. But um not only did you get me started, I think you got me started in the podcast when you after I went to work at the same place you were working, and you got me into you got me into that job too, if I remember correctly. That's right.
SPEAKER_09So you owe me everything. I guess so.
SPEAKER_01That's what I hear.
SPEAKER_09I guess so. With a free microphone today.
SPEAKER_01So this is all mine, I'm just kidding.
SPEAKER_08I I saw you were there eyeballing the board, but you'll have to fight rinse. I know.
SPEAKER_07If anybody's gonna steal this board, it's me first.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, the new job does afford me weakens to be able to do that sort of stuff.
SPEAKER_08And um you can give them a plug too if you want. I mean, it's up to you, man. No. No, never mind.
SPEAKER_02No, I guess not.
SPEAKER_08It'll be hard for me to sell them a sponsorship then if you're the only reason I'm saying that is because I'm the warehouse manager and I don't want any more product to come into the place. I'm already swapped. Yeah, I I see all the stuff, the posts on Facebook. They're very busy. That's good. Very busy, and I don't want to get any busier. That's good. All right, well, listen, let's get you to uh Eric did the last one, right? Is Eric? Okay. Well, then I mean you know what that means then. Yeah, Dave, what do you want to hear? Oh.
SPEAKER_01Name an artist. I'm telling you, I'm going against myself now. I just said Oh, I thought you said game, yeah. Game. Yeah. Oh, game. I did say Dave. Oh, I heard Dave.
SPEAKER_08You were looking over there. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I'll say George Strait.
SPEAKER_01No, no, let's make him do it. No, I'm not gonna do it. See, my brother-in-law is the biggest George Strait fan, and he would shoot me if I tried because he knows I don't know.
SPEAKER_02That's okay.
SPEAKER_01So, do you know Jackson Brown? Of course. Dr. My Eyes. Yeah.
SPEAKER_09I've seen Jackson Brown.
SPEAKER_01Good. Well, then maybe I won't play this song. What I love about this song is just the knowledge behind the fact that Jackson Brown wrote this sitting at a bus stop when he was 16 years old. And it's insane to me that someone can have these deep thoughts and this deep of a connection with their lyrics and what they're trying to convey as Jackson Brown when he's 16. I mean, there's artists who are in their 50s who can't write songs as well as this. So I'm oh I is do I know this? Is this a popular song? You should know this song. You know, if you're a Jackson Brown fan, you would know it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04These days these days I seem to think a lot about the things that I forgot to do for you. All the chance I have a chance to do Well, I have love so hard to risk another these days. For so damn long, keep on moving. Things are bound to be improving these days one of these days days. I sit on cornerstones and count the times and quarter tones to ten My friend Don't confront me with my failures. I have not forgotten you.
unknownYes.
SPEAKER_02That's a good one.
SPEAKER_08Like 16. Yeah, that I don't I'm not familiar, I'm not familiar with that Jackson Brown tune, but I'm glad that you uh introduced me to that. That oh my god.
SPEAKER_07I love that song.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, you did it justice, my friend.
SPEAKER_01Gorgeous. We're both playing very depressing sad songs. I'll we'll I'll pick it up.
SPEAKER_07Those are my favorite kind of songs. The ones where it's like people reminiscing about how they used to be happy, but not anymore. I'm like, yeah, that's a great tune for me.
SPEAKER_01And I feel those are the ones that are written out of the purest and realest emotion. The deck of their heart. Yeah, you know, because anyone can write a song about shaking it off or you know, putting a ring.
SPEAKER_07Or how mad they are at their butt is.
SPEAKER_09Or how big their buttons. That's a solid point. Or how blingy their butt is. How blingy. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, but it just might not have the same weight as somebody pouring out their soul.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, it's true.
SPEAKER_07As much as I love my blingy nails.
SPEAKER_08Well, listen, I I'm gonna ask, you you each have done two, right? A piece, right? All right, so I would you guys want to collaborate on one, or is that asking too much?
SPEAKER_01I don't think it's asking too much.
SPEAKER_08I mean, Eric's looking at me like, I don't know, man. I'm you guys are learning. You both you both are so funny because you have this insecurity about your art artistry.
SPEAKER_09And I I so appreciate it.
SPEAKER_05It's it's going down and I mean everybody's gonna remember the 100th episode. That's right. That's the whole idea.
SPEAKER_07I just realized your shirt says 100 YF on it, too. Yeah. Oh no! I just don't just kill it. He wore his special 100 shirt for 100 years.
SPEAKER_08Well, thank you, man. 100 YF. What is that? What oh, maybe I shouldn't ask.
SPEAKER_09100 years thought. Oh, the 100 year old. Oh, the band! That's right.
SPEAKER_08Oh, the band's represented. Look, even Julie knew that.
SPEAKER_07Julie's really knowledgeable. I'm glad we have Julie. I'm really glad.
SPEAKER_04You and me both imagine there's no heaven. It's easy if you try.
SPEAKER_05Nothing to give all time for life time to imagine all the people. You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one.
SPEAKER_04And if you came to be imagine the people all the work, you may say I'm a dreamer.
SPEAKER_05But I'm not the only one.
SPEAKER_04Oh, someday you join us, and the world will live as one.
SPEAKER_00How much fun was that? Every week, Ren and David will bring you informative fun, maybe a musical guest or two, and you'll always get a load of laughter. Answered emails, rants, raids, community thoughts, and so much more. Opinions expressed are not necessarily those of their wonderful sponsors. Thanks for listening. Don't forget, new episodes are available every Monday morning at 1 a.m. And they would love to hear from you at the general's wake-up call at gmail.com.
