SPEAKER_06Here it is, another beautiful day in the land of enchantment, and it's time for the show who was ranked number three in music podcasts in 2023. Shooting for number four just to give the others a chance. Whom am I kidding? Headed to number one in your hearts for sure. Time for yet another wondrous episode of the wake up call with your hosts, Ren and David.
SPEAKER_01Yay!
SPEAKER_09Is the microphone working? It's a friend, as a friend, it's a no meet your time, hurry up, choose your down belate. Take a breath, as a friend, as I'm not being jumped down, down to beach, beat out you beat friend, bear the friend, down, oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_01That was kind of dark. That was kind of Yeah, it was a little dark. A little grungy, maybe?
SPEAKER_03Well, I'm you know, I've been working really hard out there sweating in our new studio trying to get it put together so we can get out. I'm feeling kind of grungy.
SPEAKER_01Okay, well you know what? Today, on the KSJE Sunday morning wake up call. With my friend Ren. And my grungy buddy Dave. Let's do some uh let's do some grunge meetings. Grunge? Grunge?
SPEAKER_03You know, I'm not familiar with grunge at all. And I was gonna look it up beforehand and get the definition. I was gonna check Wikipedia. Guess what?
SPEAKER_01What?
SPEAKER_03I have not done any of that. So I'm gonna I do have my things that make you go, hmm. Okay, we got that impression. Good. Um but other than that, Ren, I I'm sitting here with a blank slate in my mind. It's like an it's like a blank chalkboard for you to write on.
SPEAKER_01I'm so excited because grunge me up, baby. I had a feeling you might not. You would be too busy. See, of course, it wasn't that you were too procrastinating. You were too busy, so I looked it up for you, don't worry. Okay and uh first of all, that the first song was Come as You Are by the you know the pinnacle of Grunge, the band Nirvana.
SPEAKER_03Oh you know what? I I I felt familiar with that style or that music and the voice and everything like that. I I should know who this is. Yeah, it kind of makes sense.
SPEAKER_01I they have a very a more famous song uh called It Smells Like Teen Spirit.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah, I remember that one.
SPEAKER_01But everyone's kinda heard that, so I wanted to open it up with my favorite Nirvana song, Come As You Are, which I love that opening little riff. But uh grunge is a genre of rock music that flourished in the late 1980s and early 1990s and spawned a particular style of fashion. Like the grunge wasn't just the music, it was also the subculture, yeah, the cult the the clothing. The term grunge was first used to describe the murky guitar bands, most notably Nirvana and Pearl Jam, that emerged from Seattle in the late 1980s as a bridge between mainstream 1980s heavy metal hard rock and post-punk alternative rock.
SPEAKER_03So grunge really kind of came out of Seattle.
SPEAKER_01Oh, absolutely.
SPEAKER_03Now here's the deal. Now think about this for a second. Have you ever been to Seattle?
SPEAKER_01Uh no, but I knew actually I have been to Seattle. I was very briefly when I was a teenager.
SPEAKER_03Well, you know, the sun never shines there. As a matter of fact, it rains all the time, primarily. I mean, I've I've been doing business trips up there a couple of times. But if the sun does come out, the people of Seattle wonder what they've done wrong. This is an omen what's going on.
SPEAKER_01Either that or they're so moody when the sun comes out, they actually hide from it.
SPEAKER_03Exactly. But the food, the seafood, oh my gosh, I could go on.
SPEAKER_01Now I know my family, before I was born in Pennsylvania, they lived in Seattle probably in the early 90s. So they were probably there for a lot of the grunge explosion. And uh they've never really told me anything about it other than they started seeing a lot of teenagers running around with dirty hair and flannels, which is a big part of grunge music.
SPEAKER_03Dirty hair and flannels.
SPEAKER_01But I guess it was too much for them, so they ran to Pennsylvania.
SPEAKER_03That's how I am every day in the winter.
SPEAKER_01You're a grunge, man. You're rep in the grunge.
SPEAKER_03There we go. Let me just say this, I'm not a huge fan of like Pearl Dream. I mean, I like some of their stuff. And Ron is the same way, I like some of their stuff as well. Um and you know, I did a thing a few years ago, the controversy with the little boy on the uh cover.
SPEAKER_01Yes, the never the Nevermind cover, which is what Become As You Are is that the album it's from.
SPEAKER_03That album. And I think we even talked about it on one of our shows too, like the guy was trying to sue them or something.
SPEAKER_01Because he thought it was exploit child exploitation or something. Which is like I mean, it's one thing if it is an incredibly iconic image. It is, and it'd be one thing if he wasn't still getting royalties from it because he was a big part of it.
SPEAKER_03That's a solid point. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But also, you don't need to make up reasons for why you're upset. If if you're simply upset because it's like, yeah, my image, my baby image was used. So I want money for that. You don't have to make up things about exactly. Uh which is kind of funny too, because grunge is a little anti-establishment.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that's funny. That is funny. There's so many jokes that I would like to say about this whole thing. Maybe maybe the reason he's upset is because that's his wee wee hasn't grown any.
SPEAKER_01Oh no. He hasn't gotten a date. He hasn't gotten a single date his whole life. You're like, um, is this you? Yeah, I'm gonna pass. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_03Alright. I'm I'm not totally off track, so sorry.
SPEAKER_01No, you're fine. I mean it's a big part of the grunge scene these days. And uh yeah, I know you said you don't really like grunge too much, but hopefully I don't mind it.
SPEAKER_03You don't mind it. Yeah, it's not that I don't like it, but uh okay. Yeah, it's not I would not pick that out to listen to.
SPEAKER_01Well, maybe I'll play you a couple songs that you do like.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I'm telling you right now, you have converted me on a couple others. So I'm anxious for this show today.
SPEAKER_01Let's see.
SPEAKER_03And of course, we're gonna have uh the Zen of Ren.
SPEAKER_01Zen of Ren.
SPEAKER_03And we'll have a do we have a do we have a movie?
SPEAKER_01We do have a movie. Okay, we do have a movie.
SPEAKER_03Okay, and fantastic. And I of course have things that make you go. And I'm really excited because well, I'll just we'll just wait. It'll be a sus it'll be a susprise.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so l stay for the music and keep staying for the extra content.
SPEAKER_03There you go.
SPEAKER_01Alright, so I've got uh Soundgarden for us right now. This is fell on Black Days. Oh, I'm familiar with these guys too, so and I like this song, so you know the song? Yeah, I do. Okay, well let's check it out. Why did you play it? I already am to illness.
SPEAKER_09Seemed to greet me with a smile. So, back to the night, I'm on the state when I kill the ride, when I kill the right, that is the master. Don't do all the time, and don't die.
SPEAKER_02Oh, make me over. I'm all I wanna be.
SPEAKER_07I walk in study demonology to be the day I'll look at your bell that's like You better watch that way, you don't let the way You wanna put a meat When I'm gonna sell it Now I'm gonna sell it And that was Celebrity Skin by Hole, led by the controversial Courtney Love.
SPEAKER_01Do you know much about Courtney Love?
SPEAKER_03Not a lot.
SPEAKER_01I mean I know the name, but she uh she was with Kurt Cobain up until he passed away. And uh she's controversial for a lot of reasons, she's really outspoken, she does really um questionable antics, you know, sometimes insulting, sometimes they make you think about the state of the world. But I think I think the biggest thing that she's controversial for is that she's uh really struggled with her drug addiction, and a lot of people potentially blame her for encouraging Kurt Cobain to get into drugs and potentially make him more depressed. And I don't know if that's true, but I did just want to note that. I I think Courtney Love is uh is a very controversial figure. Speaking of controversial, just the way you said that. Yeah, I don't want to say one way or another, but I felt like I should bring that up. Speaking of controversial, I do kind of have a uh controversial movie to talk about.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I can hardly wait. Rant away!
SPEAKER_05How about a good ranting? As ranters go, Ren's one of the best, whether it be a movie, TV series, short film, book. Who has time to read? Hmm, probably not a book. Here she is with the rant of the day.
SPEAKER_01All right, so I feel like my original purpose for the Wren Rant was that I could talk about new movies so people could go out and see them. But I also use it as an excuse to talk about um big deal movies that are potentially really old that I've seen for the first time. So I watched a controversial film, Eraser Head, by a surrealist cult classic art film by David Lynch. I think on the last show I talked about a David Lynch uh movie. It is a black and white, depressing nightmare of a film about a man whose ex-girlfriend gives birth to a very sick, deformed baby. And it has a lot of surreal imagery, strange performances, uh, but it's overall about the fear and anxiety of becoming a parent, not only a parent too early, but becoming a parent to a child that is incredibly unhealthy and that requires a lot of looking after.
SPEAKER_03Oh wow.
SPEAKER_01It's a slow burn, it's uh very vibe, it's very vibey um in terms of like you're not supposed to watch it for the straightforward plot. Even though there is a straightforward plot you can follow, it's it's more of a feeling. The whole movie gives you a feeling. Think of it as like a really long extended nightmare. Got it. Uh I found it incredibly disturbing and upsetting. And if you're into artsy films and cult classics, I say definitely check it out. It's it's one of the best in that genre. Um, if you're a sensitive viewer, don't watch it because it's really weird.
SPEAKER_03I can be very sensitive.
SPEAKER_01I know you can, Dave. That's why I warn you about these things. So uh that's a racerhead. All right. What isn't that special?
SPEAKER_05Every week, a new rant. She's relentless. I mean, relentless.
SPEAKER_01I feel like this music doesn't quite fit for the vibe of a racerhead, but it's still a classic Hollywood film in terms of like cult classics.
SPEAKER_03Alright, I'll have to check it out. I mean, I have I I would say probably 75% of the films that you have uh reviewed, I have enjoyed.
SPEAKER_01Okay, that's gonna go down after you watch a Racerhead. Okay. That percentage will go down.
SPEAKER_03Alright. You know where it's available, not that we will advertise for them.
SPEAKER_01Uh it is available on Max.
SPEAKER_03Max, okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and that's not a call to action. That's just letting you know where it is.
SPEAKER_03Okay, great. And you know, it's Are you sure that's not a call to action?
SPEAKER_01I did not say anything about Max other than what is on it.
SPEAKER_03Okay, there you go.
SPEAKER_01But I think Eraserhead kind of works for the grunge aesthetic because it's it takes place in uh a really industrial city. It's like a dirty movie. Everything's dirty and grungy in uh for our show today. It's perfect. You didn't even know it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that was absolutely I you know I'm gonna tell you. Is it w what do we call this?
SPEAKER_01Um feeling grungy.
SPEAKER_03Feeling grungy, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because a big part of grunge was the fashion, and a lot of that was like dirty hair and ripped jeans and and old holy t shirts and flannel.
SPEAKER_03I can't go long with my hair dirty. I mean, I can a couple of days, but it was long.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. This song I don't know if it's like strictly grunge, but to me it has a grunge vibe. This is the smashing pumpkins and a sort of softer grunge vibe.
SPEAKER_03I love smashing pumpkins.
SPEAKER_01You say you're not a huge fan of grunge, but you like all these bands so well.
SPEAKER_03I love these guys.
SPEAKER_01This is the today.
SPEAKER_03Alright, not tomorrow.
SPEAKER_01Today.
SPEAKER_00Give him a game! JSJE, Farmington, New Mexico, New Mexico. Your Sunday morning will never be the same.
SPEAKER_04My DJ has a first name as D A B I D. My DJ has a second name as M-I-L-L-S. Oh, I like to listen every day. And if you ask me why, I'll say, because my DJ is so full of B-O-L-O-G-NA.
SPEAKER_00You're listening to the Wake Up Call on K SJE Farmington.
SPEAKER_10Oh Feel Maybe he'll see a little better set in Aiza. This is that he sees that I'm gonna eat that familiar winner, no weird as I was a water on the winner on this way on the leader, all the same.
SPEAKER_03That was not a good Pearl Jam impression, but you know I'm feeling a bit grungy, but I'm excited.
SPEAKER_01Me too, yeah. It's never felt so good to be so grungy. Yeah, to be so grungy.
SPEAKER_03Well, there's a couple of things I'm excited about. First of all, our studio is almost complete. Almost completely complete.
SPEAKER_01No broad day, and I kind of focused it on like the burn your bra era feminine. I love it. It's about the burn your bra era.
SPEAKER_03My mom was the ultimate feminist. I'm gonna tell you anything.
SPEAKER_01What I was gonna talk about in the show too is uh like is burning your brain, did they literally want you to do that, or was it more of like a metaphorical women actually did, I believe in the 60s.
SPEAKER_03I think they actually did, but I I think it was more metaphorical than we do.
SPEAKER_01I think so too. And and stay tuned because I think it's kind of a rabbit hole in uh learning about the burning your brain movement. I learned a lot of new things, so stay tuned for the movie.
SPEAKER_03Because it is uh celebrating that.
SPEAKER_01Which I know you're all too excited about. So that last song we played was uh by uh Grunge Pioneer Pearl Jamie. And then before that, we played another Grand Pioneer Mud Honey with Hunter. Like the hair metal rock of the 1980s into the more like you look at some of the previous decades like Death Leopard and and uh Quiet Riot and Motley Crue, and they're all like, whereas Grind was a little bit more like poetry and cry. And maybe thrash about too.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I was gonna say, there's a little thrashing going on in here somewhere. Alright, well we had another tune on it, so we got coming up.
SPEAKER_01Uh we got, ooh, this is a good one. This is Temple of the Dog with Hunger Strike.
SPEAKER_03Oh, strike away, hunger. I am getting it. Can you hear my stomach?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I can hear a growling.
SPEAKER_09But I can be on the swim source. And the farm baby sleeps on kiss.
SPEAKER_10When I can't be on the mouth, when my heart's already songs, I don't know.
unknownI'm going hungry.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that was Alice and Chains with Man in the Box.
SPEAKER_03Man in the Box. I've have felt like that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, me too. It's a it's a relatable story.
SPEAKER_03Except you would be woman in the box.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm. Well, person in the box.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01It's all about equality, Dave.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_01That let me say, that's just something that would make me go, hmm. Really? Yeah.
unknownThings to make you. Things that make you go, hmm. Things to make go.
SPEAKER_01Now it's time for Dave's things that make you go, hmm.
SPEAKER_03Wow, you got my own little Oh man. You deserve it. You're giving me goosebumps over here. Alright, there are more bacteria cells in your body than human cells.
SPEAKER_08What?
SPEAKER_03Yes. The average human is uh around 56% bacteria. This was discovered in 2016 study and is far less than the earlier estimates of 90%.
SPEAKER_01Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_03Because bacteria is so light. However, by weight, each person is over 99.7% human.
SPEAKER_01I guess that's why I don't I'm not so afraid of germs. Like I know there's people who are very germ phobic. I'm not germ phobic because that's just who I am. I'm mostly bacteria.
unknownThings to make go things to make you.
SPEAKER_01I just wanted to finish it off with that. Things that make you go, hmm.
SPEAKER_03Yes, exactly. Well, thank you for that. That was uh that was great. Once again, then I feel very sp I'm feeling very special. Not grungy, special.
SPEAKER_01Oh good. Well, you can be special and grungy.
SPEAKER_03Okay, so logged back to really feeling grungy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, grunge, you know, was uh really made Seattle at the time take off. Not only because the Microsoft Corporation was stationed there and that huge growth during the nineties, uh, but grunge uh made uh Seattle a magnet for reccu record executives looking for the next big thing. As the media spread the word, grunge became an international fad, and American department stores soon had sections of grunge clothing. Which isn't that like goes against grunge, you know.
SPEAKER_03Sounds like it might.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you want to be anti-establishment. Oh well. Well, eventually grunge faded, partly because of the tragic death in 1994 of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, who had become a generational spokesman, but also because of the disappointing record sales by many of the bands from Seattle, who never did become the next big thing. Nevertheless, grunge played an enormous role in the moving alternative rock into the pop mainstream.
SPEAKER_03Sweet. Well, I'm liking a lot of it. I mean, uh maybe I don't know if like maybe toler I don't know.
SPEAKER_01I don't know the right word, but it's not what you would personally throw on.
SPEAKER_03You know, if I was taking off on a trip, personally I would put on the wake-up call and listen to past shows. As you should. Yeah, and you can get that at interwestconcepts.com. All one word, all overcase, I-n-t, r-w-e-s-t-c-o-n C E P T S dot com.
SPEAKER_01Perfect!
SPEAKER_03Good stuff, my dude. Yeah, all right. Well, listen, I'm really I I am enjoying it though. I mean, I'm enjoying learning more about it. I did not realize that it um that it uh actually originated out of uh Seattle, Washington.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's I mean, I only really remember that fact. I read it on Britannica, I'm getting all that info from Britannica. Uh, but I also remembered that fact because what other place in the United States could birth such a intense, angsty music other than rainy Seattle.
SPEAKER_03You know, I was only up there for short spurts at a time, you know, maybe three or four days max. Uh and it did rain a lot. It didn't uh there wasn't a lot of sunshine, but the s the food was just spectacular, especially if you like seafood.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, any coastal city.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, exactly. And uh I never I did not really notice it. I enjoyed the rain. I mean, coming out of New Mexico where we don't get a lot of rain.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um and at that time I was living in Arizona, which uh you know only monsoon season was the only time you saw rain. So I really didn't mind it. Um and you know, nobody was complaining about it raining. Yeah, they're used to it. Yeah, exactly. But yeah, it was a nice it was uh and I went to that place and they've been on Facebook. They actually I think were kind of world famous, but they throw the fish to one another. Oh with the fish market. Yeah, the fish market. I went in there and uh Yeah, I really had a good time. Had some raw oysters from there, it was very good.
SPEAKER_01Oh boy, that's where I draw the line with seafood draw raw oysters.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I love raw oysters.
SPEAKER_01You know, I went to Seattle as a teenager for at the time it was one of the country's biggest anime conventions, SakuraCon. Oh right. Sakura means a cherry blossom. But uh yeah, I was I was only there for a short time and it wasn't particularly rainy when I was there. It was cloudy, but not rainy. Um I had a blast. I went to like a triple decker, three-story tall arcade, which was really cool.
SPEAKER_03Oh, nice.
SPEAKER_01And at the time, I'm not sure if this is still the case, Seattle was one of the places in the country that had like the highest population of Japanese immigrants. So that's a fun fact about Seattle for now.
SPEAKER_03No kidding. Well it is it's definitely a neat place. I think that fish market might be in Portland, but they're all there close together. I mean, we traveled through all, I don't remember exactly what town that fish market was in, but yeah, we had a good time over it. Well, and I was with my boss, so Oh, cool.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you know that it was fun then, because if you were with your boss and you still had a good time.
SPEAKER_03Exactly.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, go Seattle, go Seattle.
SPEAKER_03We had some extra time. He goes, Let's go see some sights. Nice. I said, Do you like fish? Not particularly but I do want to go to the fish market, and I'm like, all right, I'm down.
SPEAKER_01It's like world famous. When you say that, I don't know the name of it, but I I yeah, I'm pretty sure there's a world famous fish market there. But they have things other than fish.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, there's all kinds it's it's a neat area for sure. It's uh actually that's where my brother was before he passed. That's where he was planning on retiring, is up around Portland, Seattle area.
SPEAKER_01Oh wow.
SPEAKER_03Cool.
SPEAKER_01Hey, um, while we still have the time, I'm gonna play us one more song.
SPEAKER_03Why don't you play us another song? Oh, you got it. Have I been talking too much?
SPEAKER_01No, not too much. I just the right amount, Dave. Don't you don't you worry about it. All right, this is Fugazi with the waiting.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I just want to say Fugazi. Let me do let me introduce the band. Fugazi!
SPEAKER_09Fugazi, baby. I'm playing a big surprise. I've got a five day mistake.
SPEAKER_01I think that song kind of shows Grunge's punk roots.
SPEAKER_03I would say so. That was real punky.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, real punky. And that's kind of the trouble I had with finding songs for this uh show. I didn't realize grunge, the movement and and the genre. Uh I didn't realize that it didn't it it only lasted about four or five years.
SPEAKER_08Right.
SPEAKER_01When I think of grunge, I think it just took over the nineties. And of course, even after the like peak of its popularity ended, um people still make grunge music.
SPEAKER_03Like right. I I realize that.
SPEAKER_01And Pearl Jam kept making stuff, and then of course the drummer for Nirvana um went on to star The Foo Fighters, which is a little bit more alternative rock than grunge, but yeah, the history of grunge lives on and it's still it's still with us.
SPEAKER_03Well, I I enjoyed the show. I mean, it's not something that I would of course I will.
SPEAKER_01Here's the deal you respect it.
SPEAKER_03Oh, more yes. Very I have an even more respect for some grunge. And I and for me it was extremely interesting finding out that it was out of uh Washington State or Seattle.
SPEAKER_01Seattle that's pretty cool. Hey, real quick, let me do I'm ready. The Zen of Ren.
SPEAKER_05Prepare your mind. For now, it is time for the Zen of Red.
SPEAKER_01This one comes to us from the ever-controversial Courtney Love.
SPEAKER_03Oh, sweet.
SPEAKER_01This quote might be a little controversial. Don't be bitter and mean because you don't fit in. It's a gift. Look at you. You've got your individuality. You don't have the hurt instinct. You can read Nietzsche and understand it. Only dumb people are happy.
SPEAKER_03You know what I'm laughing, but um that's right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, I don't know if every happy person is dumb. Some people are so smart that they've managed to figure out how to be happy, but I think there is something.
SPEAKER_03Till that part about the dumb. I I I'm I'm being serious. Um of course we're doing our best to try to promote being people being smiling and laughing and being happy, not uh look for the positive things in the world and not the negative things.
SPEAKER_01Yes, and I just think there's something to be said about if you do struggle with being depressed or or feeling like you don't fit in, that could be a sign that you're pretty dang smart.
SPEAKER_03There you go.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03That's a oh man.
SPEAKER_01Well, we are just about out of time. I think it's good that we ended with these words of wisdom. And uh I hope you have a great week, Dave.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you too, Rand. We'll see you next week.
SPEAKER_01Oh, we got oh, that's right! No bra! No bra, October. See ya, folks.
SPEAKER_06Alrighty tidy, that's it for this week. Don't fret, though. They'll be back next week with a whole new thing. The wake up call is sole property of Inner West Concepts. For permission to use any or all of the shows, please contact them at InnoSconcepts.com. Ren and David would love to hear from you as well with any input you care to offer. Until next time.
SPEAKER_03Be excellent to each other. This week's show has been made possible in part by Traeger's Bar and the Doghouse.
SPEAKER_01And the old poop group.
