David is an old radio "dj" (disc jockey) getting his brand of talk and humor on the airways since 1969. It’s the animals of the planet responsibility to fertilize the earth, it’s David’s to fertilize the airways. Given the nickname the General because of his last name which he had to convert daGaneral to franchise infringement. Making a reluctant transition to a completely different medium and inviting you to take the journey with him. In each episode he will be talking about life, society, music and everything in between and you might be lucky enough to get a new recipe or two. Episodes could include local guests with interviews about their lives.
After a year and a half rambling, Laren "Ren" Harris joined him, and they bring a whole new format to an ageing radio program. Ren started as David's engineer at KPRT-FM. She has vast experience in acting and is extremely witty. She brings in a fresh perspective and keeps David in line. She is a sci-fi nerd complete with customs. She has operated a bakery as well and they both love to cook!!! Each episode is designed to bring awareness, “wake you up”!

SPEAKER_09I tend to mirror people. That's how I that's how I get through the world, is I just do what other people do and they're like, oh, I like that chick.
SPEAKER_02Well, you know, if you do it discreetly enough, you can be a great that's what I did when I sold appliances and stuff.
SPEAKER_09Yeah. You just, you know, you get to feel people feel comfortable around you because they're like, there's something familiar about this person. They remind me of me somehow.
SPEAKER_02Exactly. Well, listen, I am uh I'm really I'm I'm glad we're doing this show, and I know oh, and uh I see you got all dried off from last week's experience.
SPEAKER_09Still kind of working the sand out from my my in between my toes, but it was fun, it was a blast.
SPEAKER_02Didn't have any in your butt cheeks, no sand in your butt cheeks?
SPEAKER_09Well, I'm a lady, you know. Uh we don't talk about those things. But but yes.
SPEAKER_02It happens, it happens, it's all in nature in the river, of course.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, the river in the river.
SPEAKER_02I'm excited you decided to do this, and I was really getting a giggle out of when you were kind of researching the gentleman that I wanted you to or for us to to do today. And um for some reason I thought he was one of the first musical artists on Saturday Night Live, but uh or Saturday night.
SPEAKER_09Yes.
SPEAKER_02Uh but I don't see that. I'm gonna check that a little bit further.
SPEAKER_09He was on Saturday night and Saturday Night Live because I know I played one of his songs um for our Saturday night uh show that we did a little while. But for the people at home we'll we'll break the anticipation. We are covering Leon Redbone, baby, spotlight, right on Leon Redbone, who I don't know nearly enough about, but I'm a little tired from last week. And that's the theme for me lately, is I'm just tired. But his his his music is so um uh calm and yeah, it's relaxing.
SPEAKER_02It's relaxing, it's funny. So interesting.
SPEAKER_09It's a little funny too. It's it's uh it's cool, so I'm excited that we're diving into it.

SPEAKER_08I went to see a young lady. I've been there before, her shoes and stockings and her hand and her feet all over the floor. I went down the boat, that kicking up I went to see everything, every new I don't know, big stomp and I ain't gonna back now. SPEAKER_09And his n Leon Redbone isn't even really his name.
SPEAKER_02No. No, no, and I I know I'm gonna mess it up. Dick Rand is his first name.
SPEAKER_09Yes.
SPEAKER_02And go Gobalian.
SPEAKER_09That would be my guess on how to pronounce it, yeah. Captain Gobalian.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was born August the 26th, 1949. And um in British Cyprus. Yeah, where is that?
SPEAKER_09I I'll look it up while you read.
SPEAKER_02Um the the city was uh Nikosia. Nycosia, I think, is how it is. Um but there's also new home, Pennsylvania, so I'm not quite sure. He did vaudeville, he did ragtime, jazz blues. Um I remember him when he's real thin. I don't think he's very tall, but he's real thin. And I remember like white pants and a suit jacket, and I don't know what a shirt tie, but always a hat. I want to say fedora, but really a fedora hat.
SPEAKER_09I was looking it up, uh it was described as a Panama hat.
SPEAKER_02That's it, yeah. Panama sounds perfectly.
SPEAKER_09Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um I fell in love with him on from Saturday Night Live. I that's when I first saw him years ago. Years ago, yeah, in the 70s. Um but uh I I don't I guess he has that kind of e for me, it's kind of a Sunday morning kind of feel. Yeah, which is perfect for Jack. We we've been kind of rocking out a couple of shows.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, definitely. The authenticity show. We had some some heavy rock in that one. Oh, yeah. We had some punk rock, we had some David Bowie.
SPEAKER_02We had some great river rock for you last week.
SPEAKER_09Yes.
SPEAKER_02Rocking on the river. That's right.
SPEAKER_09And uh so yeah, we're gonna dial it back just a little bit. This feels like I don't know, it's so charming, it's so quaint.
SPEAKER_02That's a nice way to put it, I guess.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, it almost I almost feel like it belongs in a Pixar movie. Like whatever that means. You know, those early Pixar shorts where they wouldn't have any voice acting, they just have like fun, quirky music playing in the background. I feel like you could make a short about Leonard. But also, I didn't realize this. There was a TV show on PBS when I was a kid that I loved called Between the Lions, and it was all about like teaching kids how to read with puppets and stuff. But he was on Between the Lions, and I didn't even realize it. So that's where I know him from most, is his acting gigs on on a kid's show.
SPEAKER_02Well he did it says he's uh he did quite a bit of voiceover, and in television he did acting, voiceover, that kind of thing. Um in concert he was like um often he often employed um comedy and demonstrated his guitar playing skills. His uh his recurrent uh gags involved the influence of alcohol and claims he had written uh works uh originating well before he was born. He favored music of the uh Tin Pen Alley era. Uh that was the 1890s to 1910. Did you know that? Did I get something on you?
SPEAKER_09You did, I didn't know that, and now I know because I love New York City during that time, so that's really cool. Anyway.
SPEAKER_02He did he did also sing the theme to the 1980s TV show series Mr. Belvedere. And he released over 18 albums.
SPEAKER_09Very cool. About him. When you when you see when you search him up on Google, all the pictures that come up of him, he's always got his glasses, he's always got his hat, he's always like shaded in in shadow. So he's he's a mystery man, if you will, which I think was the name of one of his albums. It was either Man of Mystery or Mystery Man.
SPEAKER_02I used to have a vinyl album of his, but I I gave I gave all my albums away, I'm not sure. I don't even know which one it was, but I yeah, and I played him when I needed to just kind of mellow out, you know, that I just wanted to sit and just not have to think very hard and you know, just sit and relax. He's gonna take care of you with his music.
SPEAKER_09And I looked it up Cyprus is an island in the eastern Mediterranean Sea and it is south of Turkey and west of Syria and Lebanon, and the capital is Nicosia in the center of the island. So he was born in the capital city of Cyprus. Sweet. So at the time when he was born, I think it was a British colony. So I don't know. I believe it was it says British Cyprus in 1949, but I don't know. If it's still a British colony, hopefully not. Hopefully they got their freedom from the Brits like we did. Maybe who knows? Alright, okay, so I've got a fun one for us next. Uh, baby, won't you please come home?

SPEAKER_08Without my walking stick, I'd go and say I can't look my best a feel undressed without my cake. I step my walking stick because it may rain when it paws can't be adjust without my case.
SPEAKER_07If I ever left my house without my walking stick, well it would be something I could never explain other thing that makes me clearly not be able to make, I baby bum, I baby down, I don't bother, eat baby day, I be bad, I'm being bad, eat it, if I ever left my house without my walking speech, well it would be something I could never explain all the thing that makes me clear on our land would go for not be my god without my came.
SPEAKER_09I kind of liked it. It was kind of like a big finish.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_09Well, as as big as Leon Redbone gets, but no, it just it sounded like somebody emitting gas to me.
SPEAKER_02But that's just me.
SPEAKER_09That was by the way, just real quick, that was my walking stick.
SPEAKER_02My walking stick. Alright, well listen, he has elusive uh or he he was elusive about his origins and he never explained the origins of his stage name. According to Toronto Story Report Star report in 1980, he came to Canada in the mid sixties and uh changed his name via the Ontario Change of Name Biographical uh biographical uh research published in twenty nineteen collaborated his birth name and confirmed that his family was of Armenian origin. So he's a pretty cool dude, I think.
SPEAKER_09Yeah. And I don't blame him for wanting to be elusive about his origins. Number one, for privacy.
SPEAKER_05Sure.
SPEAKER_09And number two, back then people were weird about where you were from. You know, there was still that kind of like uh stigma, like, oh, you're not from America, well then we won't listen to you. And it's like, but he's a good musician, listen to him in a while.
SPEAKER_02I don't ever remember hearing him talk on a talk show or anything like that. I just remember I just I I don't know, I would just I I would hear him play and he would be on the TV, he would be on, he would come on, and I would have to go in there and just sit and watch. And I realized that that might be a little weird, but I don't know. There was just something relaxing and because he never really looked at camera, he was basically looking down while he was singing and playing guitar with that big what did we do? It's not a fedora Panama hat. Yeah, the Panama hat. Yeah. Pretty cool guy.
SPEAKER_09Pretty cool guy, he I've never seen him live, but it sounds like at the very least he had a sort of subdued stage energy, which sometimes can do much more than being bombastic and outlandish. And you were also mentioning that he even impressed Bob Dylan.
SPEAKER_02He did, he did.
SPEAKER_09Which is not a small feat. Bob Dylan is a little dejaded.
SPEAKER_02I thought that was kind of interesting too. I was looking at that. Um he um he m he met Bob Dylan at uh the um Mariposa folk festival in nineteen seventy-two and and and uh Dylan was so impressed by Redbone's performance performance that he mentioned it in a Rolling Stone interview. Hey! Yes indeed. That that just that just leading that magazine to a uh feature article on Redbone a year before he had a recording contract.
SPEAKER_05Cool, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I don't know. The guy is just definitely interesting, and honestly, I kind of feel like you and I are a couple of interesting characters. Not that we're on the same level as Leon Redbone.
SPEAKER_09No, at least not in guitar playing. Could Leon Redbone start a podcast? I don't know.
SPEAKER_02I don't think so. Well, he could have if he was lucky.
SPEAKER_09If he really if he really wanted to, he absolutely could have.
SPEAKER_02His parents probably told him the same thing my dad used to tell me. Son, you can do anything you set your mind to.

SPEAKER_00When it comes to ranting on entertainment, movies, TV shows, etc., move over the school and ebook. It's time for Ren Rant.
SPEAKER_09Alright, so this is one that you've probably heard a lot about, because it's one of the biggest movies of the summer, of the year, potentially. Um it's the new Christopher Nolan movie, The Odyssey, based on um Homer's Odyssey, you know, that ancient story that before it was even a book was just told orally through poems and stuff. Stars has a great cast, Matt Damon, Ann Hathaway, uh Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, who's quickly becoming my favorite actor. The Odyssey is jam-packed with incredible filmmaking, and it was all practical effects, as much as he could do. There's a scene where um there's giants. Matt Damon's character, uh, Odysseus has to fight giants. And what they did is that they just hired really tall people, and then they got a really short lady to be to play Matt Damon from the back. So it looks like they're really giant. And that's just one example of of some of the really cool effects in the movie that are all practical. Um, there's some really scary scenes too, like with Polyphemus, the uh Cyclops is horrifying. And uh so maybe be careful when you're taking your kids to go see it because there's some scenes in there that I know that would have traumatized me if I was a little kid. But otherwise, it's a really good, solid movie and uh great performances all around. I definitely recommend it. I'm gonna try and see it in IMAX soon.

SPEAKER_02Well, you know, he was um he was introduced to the to a larger public as a semi-regular musical guest on NBC Saturday night. Saturday night. For the later generation. Appearing twice in the first season, which that would have been Saturday night. And during the nineteen eighties and nineties, he was a frequent guest on the uh tonight show, Johnny Carson. He was also a guest on a prairie home companion.
SPEAKER_09Early Crosby or early Crosby.
SPEAKER_02Um did I say Cosby Crosby? Okay, I just wanted to make sure. That's right, not real.
SPEAKER_09Unfortunately. Okay, so I looked it up too for home competition. It was a weekly radio variety show created and hosted by Garrison Keeler and aired live from 1974 to 2016. So it was a radio variety radio variety show. He's been all over the place. Um he's one of those artists that like once you realize how many things he's been in and how prolific he is in certain areas, you're like there's the snowman, the sort of like motion animation looking snowman voiced on redbone voice. And then over the credits, they sang, I think maybe it's cold outside with Zoe Deschanel, who's also an elf. So just another thing. Like, yeah, he's he's been around, he's been doing things. And this is a song that I think you recommended to me a while ago, Diddy Wa Diddy.
SPEAKER_02Yes, I love this song.

SPEAKER_08News book chronic, have you heard the news? I should get a love at the walking blues and I kept them walking. I don't walk by troubles away. Well I'm so glad trouble don't last away. It used to be my sleep motherfuckers out on me. Won't be together like we used to be and I kept on walking trying to walk my trouble to week. Well, I'm so glad that was the wave. Got the hard luck blues when hardlocked towns are gone. All I heard was all in front, I kept on walking, got to walk my troubles away. Well I'm so blessed, troubles not less a week. I kept them walking. I did have my trouble the way I'm so glad trouble down last the way.
SPEAKER_02I I I love this man. I'm not gonna lie. He's great. I do. I I don't know why, but it's just something about it.
SPEAKER_09The the word I've been searching for for his music is amongst other things, skilled, um well done, you know, well produced, but also relaxed. Like you listen to it and you just want to like kick back and not overdone.
SPEAKER_02I mean, it's not overdone ever. It's production. It's very simple, it's very clean, yeah.
SPEAKER_09Like at the like at the most, I think I was playing another song, My Walking Stick, and it had castinets in it, and I was like, wow, that's really out there for him. So anytime he adds a new um instrument to something, it it's it's always exciting because he doesn't need a lot. It's like um like how Adele can get a number one hit with just singing to the piano. I feel the same with him. I feel like he he gets a lot done with just his guitar and just his voice.
SPEAKER_02Because he plays with emotion. He's very, very dry.
SPEAKER_09But I mean some of the best wines are dry.
SPEAKER_02There you go.
SPEAKER_09And when I was in Japan, they have a beer brand there called Asihi, and they have a they have a beer that's called Super Dry. Oh, and it's probably one of the best beers I've ever had. So sometimes dry is good.
SPEAKER_02I've had Japanese beer years ago. I don't know where I got imported. It was in somewhere in Phoenix when I lived in Phoenix in one of the big liquor stores. And I was like, Oh, I'm gonna try this. And it was interesting. Um I I don't know that I liked it that much, but it was okay.
SPEAKER_09Okay. I'd be interested to know what kind you tried because I don't know. I tried Sapporo when I was in Japan, and I tried Asehi. I even tried a um I even tried an Indian beer while I was there. I'd have to look up what it was, but it was really good.
SPEAKER_02All I know is it was very blonde. It was very light.
SPEAKER_09Very light. Yeah, yeah. I mean, and that's kind of what I like from a beer. The asehi super dry is it's very malty. It's you know, very bread tasting in a good way. A good a good beer sometimes tastes like you're drinking a loaf of bread, but it it was really good.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so you have more of a dark the darker the better.
SPEAKER_09I mean you know something stronger, more like the Guinness Stout. Guinness. Yeah. Very cool.
SPEAKER_02Stoutly, baby.

SPEAKER_02I'm gonna tell you, Ren, this one really made me go, hmm, and I kind of feel bad for Willie because of it. But cows don't like Willie Nelson.

SPEAKER_02No, and here's the proof. It's a funny fact for you, but a dairy cow will produce up to 3% more milk when listening to music. Okay. But they don't like country music, especially Willie Nelson. They need something with a good beat.
SPEAKER_09I wonder what it is about Willie Nelson that they. don't like.
SPEAKER_02Because you can't dance Dan even stop.
SPEAKER_09Because it doesn't have a beat. Okay.
SPEAKER_02Well it has a beat, but it's not a two-step kind of beat. Okay. You know, just that's the way Willie is. Instead of things that make you go, mm-To that's pretty good. Well it's a spotlight show today, or actually for some people it might be for your consideration.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, yeah, yeah. Um but which is pretty fitting for Leon Redbone. It's not that he isn't a big deal and hasn't had cultural impact.
SPEAKER_02It's just that you may not have realized it's a little bit more than I didn't know that what what you said in the first half about the different shows that he'd been on, the different voices that he had done. Yeah. It kind of blew me away.
SPEAKER_09He's he's one of those personalities that's been floating around. And then I think his version of polywadd polywally doodle all the way all the day yes that's the one that I know. When I think of that song I was like it's definitely I I don't know.
