In the sermon "The Rejoicing Warrior," Pastor Jennette Ross pivots the discussion on the traditional Christmas Advent message to the prophet Zephaniah's declarations on Jesus' triumphant fight for His people. Drawing from last week’s sermon on Isaiah 11:1, Pastor Jennette asserts that Jesus reawakens that which has been declared dead, an association that corresponds with Zephaniah’s prophecies. She examines Zephaniah chapter three, nicknaming the prophet as the one who delivers harsh messages of demolition and death, but who later portrays God assembling His people, imposing His anger, and cleansing them. For her, this mirrors Jesus’ sacrifice and resonates with Zephaniah's prophecy. Jennette then zeroes in on Zephaniah 3:16-17, drawing a parallel between a mighty, victorious warrior and Jesus; a soldier who takes joy in them. She uses popular cinematic and biblical warriors and the Hebrew word for rejoicing, “Gil," to stress the depth of joy that Jesus, the mighty warrior has for his people. Pastor Ross further roots her point with an analogy about her husband's passion for his football team and segues this into the story of Israel's escape from Egypt, emphasizing the notion of God as the protector and warrior for His people. Concluding the sermon, Jennette incites the audience to introspect their approach in facing their battles and to seek prayer if they surrender too much to themselves or if they wish to deepen their understanding of Jesus as the rejoicing warrior. The sermon ends with a prayer for the church to gain a more profound understanding and experience of God. Ross contextualizes Jesus as a mighty warrior who celebrates and sings in joy for His people, reminding the congregation to trust in His power and find peace in His love.
