Jaclyn Steele:

Hi, I am Jaclyn Steele and welcome to self discovery. Howard Thurman so beautifully wrote, don't ask what the world needs, ask what makes you come alive and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive, coming alive. That my friends is what self discovery is all where that mass Hello, hello, hello. Welcome to today's episode of self discovery with Jaclyn Steele. I am Jaclyn Steele. This podcast, as I have mentioned before, is soon to be called self worth with Jaclyn Steele, that has been on my to do list to change everything over. But with a 10 week old, y'all, it's just hard to hold myself to certain dates, because I just never know what I'm gonna get. And right now my son is going through a very fussy phase. And so I'm a little under the gun, getting this podcast recorded to send to my editor. I'm doing the best I can, I'm recording it on my phone, because when I leave my son alone and try and go into my office to record, he started screaming. So my choice was record this on my phone and possibly have the sound quality be a little less or recorded in my office and have a screaming baby in the background. So hopefully this will be okay with you guys. And you'll probably hear little baby noises from from time to time in this episode. But I didn't want to leave you hanging. I didn't want to miss an episode because I love creating this content for you all. And I love being able to connect with you guys through the sound waves. Today, I want to talk about how to inject joy into your surroundings. As you know, the theme for April is surroundings. And joy is a word I've been marinating on a lot lately. I've been writing it all over my planner as a goal is the feeling that I want to be feeling leading up to the birth of my son, I had so much on my mind, new moms, I know you can relate. I was so focused on having a healthy baby and prepping my house and getting as ready as possible for this major life change. Now that he's here, though, I've been reflecting and I realized that I have been neglecting joy for a while. And it's not that I haven't had joyful moments. But joy had not been a priority for me. And now. Now it is. And I found it's really easy to inject joy into my day when joy has been injected into my space where I live, where I'm inhabiting where I'm hanging out. This is simple stuff, but it matters. And it makes a huge difference like capital H huge difference. And injecting joy has become kind of a ritual. For me. It's something that's fun, and it's something that I look forward to in the morning and at night and during the day. And it's a combination of bringing awareness to my needs. And also creating moments that facilitate peace, creativity, calm, aka all the things that lead to deep joy for me, it's a little bit layered. I think so often we think in black and white terms, but injecting joy into our surroundings and injecting joy into our day can be a compilation of tiny little moments where we just give ourselves a little bit of time and space and focus. So I want to break down how I've gone about doing this recently from big ticket items to easy peasy like do it right now things and these are short and they are not necessarily very hard. Okay. The first one is decorating my space the way I want it. I have talked a lot about this this month on the podcast so please reference the other episodes in April but decorating your space the way you want it to be. totally changes the energy of the room and it changes the energy in your body and your mind. And this can take a while

but it's so so worth it.

Jaclyn Steele:

And by take a while I mean like sometimes it takes a long time for furniture to I'm in. For instance, I ordered nightstands for our bedroom last October and they came in a week ago. But going back to decorating my space the way I want it, having nightstands sent set off a ripple effect in my bedroom, I was able to organize and put away all of the nightstand stuff that was in an open basket next to my bed for the last year. Then I was able to set up my humidifier and my diffuser and my fancy hatch alarm clock. Then we got lamps and we installed those. And with everything looking so nice and neat, it made me want to make my bed and put the throw pillows on etcetera. And now when I walk in my room, it's such a place of joy and calm. It's neat, and it's beautiful. And it's a place I'm so enjoying hanging out in. In fact, that's where I'm recording this episode right now. So decorate your space, take that time, take that energy and make it something that brings you life. Number two, organizing the insides of your space. This is so freaking cathartic. It takes some time and some energy, but going through your closets, your drawers, your tucked away files, etc. And getting rid of what you no longer need, or stuff that's just taking up mental and physical space is amazing. I've done this over and over over the years. But I find that to keep clutter at bay, you have to stay on top of this practice. And I did the first phase of this yesterday in my office. My office has been neglected over the last few months. But yesterday I poured myself and ollie pop, I took the time to clean it and to go through the items that have been collecting in the closet. And I still have more to go through in there. But right now, everything has a home. All of my books are tucked away. My filming equipment is all grouped together. My pens are in a pretty gold cup. My essential oil rollers are in a drawer that I can reach for easily to have an instant pick me up. My business cards and stationery are all organized together and easy to access. And it feels so good. And it looks so pretty. And I love guys, there's just no substitute for this. I love knowing where things are. And I love getting rid of things I no longer need. Not only does it make my physical space looks so much better. It clears energetic space. If something doesn't serve a purpose, and it doesn't bring you joy, does it really need a home in your surroundings? I would argue no, no. I love going through room by room drawer by drawer shelf by shelf and getting rid of things we don't need and then organizing the things we do. That may sound totally nerdy, but it brings me so much joy and so much peace. It feels like a giant weight lifted off of my shoulders. Links are in the show notes. And now back to the episode. Next thing that I love to do to inject joy into my space is utilizing aromatherapy. I've long been a fan of aromatherapy. But lately I've kicked it up a notch. If you were to come into my home at any time of day, something would be burning or diffusing. By bringing awareness to how I feel in the spaces I inhabit. Whether it's my car, my kitchen, my office or my bedroom, I've realized that I feel such a sense of peace and calm when my nose is activated. So I put some yummy essential oils and a diffuser, or I light a candle or use an essential oil roller. And take a moment to breathe it all in to honor my space and honor my person by doing something so lovely for myself. It's so simple, and it takes a minute. It it totally changes how you feel. Try it and I guarantee you it will shift your energy. Next thing I love doing is prioritizing beauty and function. So often we are so busy that we move into an apartment or a home or whatever, and our lives take over and we neglect the spaces that we inhabit that we spend so much of our time in. I love looking around my space and only seeing things that are beautiful, that make my eyes happy. I stash away unsightly things and make sure that the items I have on display are ones that I genuinely enjoy looking at. I also love creating function in my space. So for instance, before Roman was born, I bought these beautiful glass containers with bamboo lids from Amazon. And I put all the miscellaneous powders and drink mixes and electrolytes and blah, blah blah, that we have in the kitchen into these beautiful containers. Now they sit displayed on an open shelf in my kitchen and finding what I need is so fast and easily accessible. So I'm using these concoctions more often because they're right there and they're available. This makes me feel like I'm honoring myself and celebrating myself in the process. It wasn't hard, I ordered some containers I put all these tinctures in the containers and put them on a shelf. But it makes a huge difference. I also have this setup in my bathroom with some essential oils and bath salts. And you may not be into that. But I so am and having my bath salts in this beautiful glass to Cantor just it makes me so happy. Every time I walk into my bathroom. I'm like, this is a way for me to honor myself if I want to use these bath salts at any time of day. When we tuck stuff away, that honors our bodies, our minds, our, our our spirits. We forget about it. But when we have it displayed and out and easily accessible, we're going to use it more often right? Next, this is so so so so, so simple, but it makes a big difference. Open your windows, especially when the weather is nice. I love, love, love doing this. Sometimes our spaces can feel really stagnant and heavy and opening a window and letting in some fresh air literally breathes life into your space. It injects joy. It creates new energy. It's incredible. I highly recommend it. I'm sure you've done it before and I can I do So encourage you to keep doing it. Last thing, music. This morning, my son was really fussy, and I started to play instrumental French Cafe Music. And he instantly calmed down and fell asleep. He only fell asleep for a few minutes. But still, that like temporary break was heaven. And the power of music is astounding. And in a world that is as fast paced as ours, it's easy to put our heads down and grind. But even in the office, a little instrumental music feels so happy. And it feels like the acknowledgement that we have a spirit and a soul in here in these bodies. We aren't just workhorses chasing after money. We are here to live and love and experience life and experience, joy, friends, listeners, all of these tips are super simple. These are things that you I'm sure already know but sometimes it's so nice to be reminded. Some of these things require a little bit more focus and time and energy and others are things you can do right this second. So wherever you are, my hope is that you will try one or all of these things and that it or they will bring you joy, joy and more joy
