Social Media Influencer

We’re Back! New Season. New Co-Host. Bigger Vision.

Jenny Peterson Season 5 Episode 155

What if the idea you can’t shake is the map you’ve been asking for? We kick off a new co-host era and get candid about how a handful of stubborn nudges turned into real companies, real teams, and real impact—without polished plans or perfect timing. From selling pest control door to door and answering phones on bed rest to building one of the top 25 pest control companies in the U.S., we pull back the curtain on money scares, near misses, and the quiet faith that carried us through.

We also share the origin of a nutrition brand that started as a whisper during a bikini competition prep and grew to nearly a million orders through influencer and affiliate marketing. You’ll hear why we walked away from misaligned partners, how a sandwich-shop handshake changed everything, and the simple system we use today to act on persistent ideas: write them down, schedule the smallest irreversible step, and invite accountability. Along the way, we talk about building with teams versus going solo, prioritizing revenue-generating work, and seeing God’s hand in hard seasons that later became turning points.

If you’re sitting on a business idea, a creative project, or a personal goal you keep postponing, this conversation is your nudge to move. We’re not promising easy, but we are offering a path: courage over comfort, progress over perfection, and action over rumination. Hit play, then tell us the one step you’ll take today. If this resonates, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs a push, and leave a review so more builders can find it.

SPEAKER_00:

Welcome to another episode. I'm Jenny Peterson, and today I'm joined by a special guest, my husband, Preston Peterson.

SPEAKER_01:

Well, hello.

SPEAKER_00:

Hello. And we have some exciting news. So we are going to be making some changes to this podcast moving forward. We are going to be co-hosting this podcast together, doing episodes together as well as solo episodes. And don't worry, we're still talking about influencer marketing, social media, life, business, God, how to level up in our lives. And most importantly, we're going to have fun with it, right?

SPEAKER_01:

So we're going to have a blast. This is going to be a lot of fun.

SPEAKER_00:

I'm really excited.

SPEAKER_01:

So talk about this for a long time.

SPEAKER_00:

We've talked about it for a long time, which we will talk about moving forward. But we're also going to have special guests on, some really amazing guests on.

SPEAKER_01:

And yeah, so let's just hop into it then.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah, let's hop into it.

SPEAKER_01:

A little bit about us. So we we've been in business with each other for 21 years. We've sold and built seven, eight, nine-figure businesses. Jenny has sold tens of millions of dollars for brands. We've done home service companies, we've done product-based companies, affiliate marketing, direct sales, like we kind of a wide spectrum of things there. And so it's we're we're just excited to talk about like our failures, our wins, what we've learned along the whole way. I mean, it's been 18 years of owning our own companies.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01:

So it's going to be a fun ride. Okay, so we were talking and we were thinking about like, okay, what how do we want to start this off? Right? What is it we want to do to kind of kick off the podcast and these kind of things? And I think it's starting from the beginning, right? Starting how how it all began and the life lessons that we learned from that that kind of have got us to where we are here, right? So we, you know, we met in college, we got married. I was 21. Jenny was a baby 19. We had Jenny had a$3,000 student loan at 20% interest. I had$200 to my name, and no car, no computer, no phones, nothing. Like we were, you know, and so we're like, hey, let's just go get married, right? Because that's that's what you do. That's what you do. You know, no plan, just like, let's do this, because we were in love. And we still are. And not to remind Jenny of that sometimes, but we still are. And so, and so we started, I went and knocked doors, you know, selling pest control door to door as a college kid during the summers, and and we had some success. And so after a couple years of that, we decided, you know, let's start our own company. And and it was one of those things where we had this feeling, and we had actually been planning and we worked for a company and we had worked out an agreement, and they were like, hey, we'll help you show it, but we can't be in those markets, so you could get to do it yourself. And and and then we started to get comfortable. Yeah, so so Jenny was working at a bank at Capital One. I was working at the bank with her, and life was good. We were both working, we had no money. I mean, we had no kids, and so money was good. And we started to get really comfortable. We're like, do we really want to start our own company? And I remember we sat there and we're like, dude, this is this can be tough.

SPEAKER_00:

We're making steady paychecks, we have health insurance.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah, we get we had days off, you know, and we knew if we started the company, it's like we knew what it took to start a company. And we're like, do we really want to do that? Because we had done it every summer. And then I remember I talked to a friend of our, a family friend of ours who was in business, and he was like, look, you can do you can be successful in both areas. You can be very successful and be a banker, you can be very successful and own your own company. But the problem was is like we wanted to have kids, and it was like if Jenny, he was like, Well, if Jenny's not working, will you be able to provide the lifestyle you want just on your one income? I'm like, no. And so it kind of helped us, like, he helped us get that remembrance, right? Of like the desire and the passion and excitement we had when we originally were thinking about doing our own business. And so we went and we did it. We started our first business. We had$7,000. We bought a, we were, you know, financing a truck. And that first year, I would go knock doors at night, the next morning, service the customers, bring a pair of shorts with me, go to a gas station, change in my shorts and knock doors the rest of the night, and then go service the customers the next day.

SPEAKER_00:

And I was the office and was answering phones. Peterson Pest Control, this is Jenny. How can I help you? While being on bed, rest pregnant.

SPEAKER_01:

For 10 weeks. Like she couldn't, she was allowed to go down the stairs once and go up the stairs once per day. So she would be laying on the couch with a cell phone and a laptop. And and it was and we didn't pay ourselves for two years. Like we were just getting by. And it was tough. It was really tough. But then we went and we we sold that business, what, two, three years ago after we had started it, made some good money on it. And it's like we finally saw like the blessings of it, right? Like we finally saw, like, okay, this is something that's awesome, right? And then it was like we had started other pest control companies and other pest control companies to where now we we have one of the top 25 biggest pest control companies in the nation. And and the best part is we built it with others, right? It wasn't just us. If you want to grow big, do it with the team. If you want to grow fast, do it by yourself, right? Like it's growing, it's been a fun experience bringing other people and working with other people and really growing into something bigger than what we could have built by ourselves. And and the best part is though, is you can look back at trials and things that we've had along the way that really you can see the hand of God in it. Like there's distinct moments in that business that I'm like, that was God's hand leading us to where we were. And I think it's always good to remember that, right? Like when you've gone through trials and when you've had successes, like always looking back and saying, okay, like where were these tough times that we had, and remembering the blessings that have come from that. Like our our biggest blessings in that business came from our biggest trials, where we'll tell those stories down the road, but it's like it was all or nothing, and it turned out to be the biggest blessing from God and for the company and for all of us. And so, and and same kind of thing, right? Like, Jenny, when you started your business, talk to us about that.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah. So if you've been here for a minute, you know I've been in the influencer affiliate marketing space for a long time, for years. And I did a bikini competition.

SPEAKER_01:

She Jenny is very good looking in in smoking, but she was like off the charts smoking, smoking hot when she it was like crazy.

SPEAKER_00:

Anyways, that started journey getting into supplements, and we had this idea of why don't we get into why don't we have a supplement company? What if we got into the nutritional space? And it was like this thought that we both had, similar to the pest control when we had that, just this nagging thought that like didn't go away, it was always in the back of our mind.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah. And it was just like I mean, it was for two years that we had this thought. And do you ever have those moments where you're like, okay, the thought's not going away, or the impression's not going away, but maybe it's not happening either, because like you're not seeing much action on it. And we look back, it's probably because we weren't putting much action, like we we had the thought and we put a little effort and we didn't see like results right away. We had talked to a couple of other companies or people, and it just didn't feel right with them to do a business with them. And so we, you know, we felt like, okay, we'll at least put some effort into it. Maybe we can just close that that thought or that chapter and just kind of move on. But it just kind of kept returning, right? And just kind of kept creeping in the back of our minds, and it just won't go away. And and then over two years, I had talked to my my marketing director at the pest control. And I was like, hey, you know, we want to do this nutrition thing, you know, it'd be fun. I'm a big entrepreneur, I love business. And and I just couldn't get rid of this thought out of my head, you know, and things were going great, like we were doing really well, and it wasn't like, oh, we need to or anything. And he was like, Oh, yeah, my my future father-in-law is actually a nutrition, you should just go talk to him.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah. And he had been in it for 25 plus years. And so we we met at a local sandwich shop. It just felt like the right partnership. Like we literally like shook hands over sandwiches and him and his partner.

SPEAKER_01:

He had a partner with the company. Exactly. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00:

And started you.

SPEAKER_01:

And it's been crazy. Yeah. It's been I mean, some of the fastest growing probably one of the fastest growing companies in the nation for the last four years. And you look back, do you ever look back and be like, look at what has become of it?

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01:

I mean, there's millions of people that have been.

SPEAKER_00:

Well, we're about to hit our millionth order, which is insane to me.

SPEAKER_01:

That is crazy.

SPEAKER_00:

It is crazy though, like and I think that those nagging thoughts sometimes that we get are God-inspired ideas. And it's important to act on those ideas. Even though you feel afraid, even though you don't have everything figured out.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah, I mean, I think it's well, it's kind of like this podcast. Oh, exactly. We have been thinking about doing this podcast for what, a year? At least. And we're like, oh yeah, we should do it, we should do it. And it just won't go away. So then, like, six months ago, I think we bought all this equipment. And then it's been sitting here for six months. And, you know, but but here's the thing, right? Like, I want you to think about it in your lives. Because I know we all have this. We all have those moments where we're like, do I want to, maybe I should do this? Right. We get those impressions and we just kind of push them to the side, or we get super excited and we'll start, but maybe we don't see the benefits right away. So then we're kind of like, ah, I tried it, I can move on. Like at least I said I tried, right? And but you don't, and a lot of times we don't get to see the other side of it. That's when it's cool, is when we get to see the full circle moment of it, right? When it's like God's given us this thought, and then we act, and then, you know, and normally there's always some kind of obstacle that's going to come in the way before to like derail us. Like we had it within the pest control. We had moments where we thought we were gonna lose everything with the nutrition when you were first starting, right? Like there was some moments where you're like, this is it, like it's over. And it's like it's in those moments, once we've taken the effort and kind of just kept going, that we see the blessing, right? And I think it's said best when it was like, God loves effort and just putting the effort in when we're in the trial or we're in the challenge and acting upon those impressions. Because it's like, I mean, I look at I'm looking at the blessings that we've gained from these businesses and from, but even all the, I mean, we've got six, seven hundred people in my pest company that work for us, and we've got, you know, uh thousands of influencers and and how it's changed their lives. And I mean, all the time we get emails that talk about how the products have changed their life and giving them hope on things. And it's like that, that's the cool part about it. And so that's what we're here. This this is what this podcast is going to be about. We want to just talk about life, talk about things we've learned, talk about how we can be an instrument in the hands of God, right? And like acting upon those things. So, so I think that's exactly it.

SPEAKER_00:

And also sharing the low parts, the failures, because I think we learn a lot of huge lessons in those. And if we can help somebody avoid some of the stuff we've been through, we can help one person worth it.

SPEAKER_01:

Well, and and you think about it. So we we live in Puerto Rico right now, and there's a lot of successful people here, a lot of entrepreneurs. And nobody shares a lot of times the low points. But when we're down here and we're talking to people that have all had success, it's like, yeah, but remember the low points? And we and we all have stories that we can go on and on and on about where it was almost all gone.

SPEAKER_00:

I actually don't think I've met somebody that didn't go through a low point that's down here that's successful.

SPEAKER_01:

I agree.

SPEAKER_00:

They all have a story.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah. So, so today, go out there. I want you to write down thoughts that you have that have been on your mind, right? Things that are like, should I have done this, should I do this? And then go do it. And do it scared. Like no one, it doesn't have to be otherwise. Jenny, Jenny always is like, it doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to get done.

SPEAKER_00:

Done is better than perfect.

SPEAKER_01:

100%. This podcast is gonna get better as we go, but right now we're starting it because we have to get it started. Otherwise, we'll talk ourselves out of it.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah. And it happened yesterday during a training that we were doing for our affiliates, actually, talking about overcoming fear and taking action. And we realized we are hypocrites. We've been talking about doing this podcast. We've put it off for a year. We keep coming up with all these excuses of why we're not doing it. And Preston, like, literally pulled out his phone, texted a buddy that can help us set up all the equipment, set up all the things. I was like, come at my house tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. Like, let's just do it. Let's just rip the band-aid off.

SPEAKER_01:

It gets done.

SPEAKER_00:

Exactly.

SPEAKER_01:

So we I was like, we have to book it in our calendars. I did it the most worst time possible.

SPEAKER_00:

100%.

SPEAKER_01:

But and I had someone coming over so we were accountable because it's like, hey, he's coming over, and here we are. We're doing it. This is the start.

SPEAKER_00:

I'm excited.

SPEAKER_01:

So do something scared and think about those impressions. And when you get those impressions, act and act quickly on them. Because if you don't, a lot of times we'll talk ourselves out of it. And you never know what is on the other side of that action.

SPEAKER_00:

What if that impression is a God inspired idea and he has something incredible in store for you? But it's not going to happen unless you take the action.

SPEAKER_01:

Do it. Go do it and do it scared.
