SPEAKER_02

God, I love this song.

SPEAKER_01

I like miss it. I like miss it. Come on. Come on. Come on. B L U. B. J. A.

SPEAKER_02

Y.

SPEAKER_01

I love that. Welcome back, my friends, to the show that never ends. It's Blue Jays at the B. I am your host, Jack Jeffrey, joined by my longtime colleagues Patrick Hawk. Hey. Hey, how are you? Hey, how are you? Our computer expert Patrick Coder. Not a degenerate gambler. Hornets win. Hornets win. Hornets win. Hornets win. Book it. And Michael Roshon. Back for the new season. Let's fucking ride. I'm so excited to be here, guys. Just believe in yourself. You know, you just gotta believe in yourself. Yeah. Oh. Um. I'm gonna just kick off right away. Fuck you, Pat. Playing extra holes at Shoreline. We were supposed to record hours ago. I'm the I'm the diva of the podcast. Deadlines. Strict deadlines. And I'm sure you still just bogey double. Bogey double.

SPEAKER_02

I did not. I was like, one more, one more. Let me let me get a par. Trying to get that hole in one, right? Yeah. Search. Shout out Meisenbach. Shout out Meisenbach. Shout out to Alec, Alex Meisenbach. You know what? If you're a friend of the program, and you're on this program, you're gonna get a hole in one.

SPEAKER_06

You are. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, hell yeah. Hole number 13 of Benson, 190 yards. That's impressive. That's a good haul. So shout out, Alex. Out of boy. But that's a hard one. We are right.

SPEAKER_01

We are here. We are here in July. Yeah. Look at us. Kicking off early. Little off season, preseason banter, I guess, if you will.

SPEAKER_06

But when you're important like us, you get invited to oh, are we part of the media now?

SPEAKER_01

Right. Tuesday was media day at the McDermott Center. Yeah. And we were lucky enough to be there. And we want to share our thoughts with you, Blue Jay Nation. Yeah. Um we're the type to spill secrets. Begging. Begging for this. Oh, we're gonna hammer them.

SPEAKER_02

Right. But also the Jemia, the Jemia dunk thing right that welcomes you right into the.

SPEAKER_06

So if you haven't seen it, John Walker posted a picture of it. Just awesome. Like right when you walk in.

SPEAKER_02

So cool.

SPEAKER_06

Just him hammering. The only thing that would be better is if it was a picture of when he that's what Jack said right when we saw it.

SPEAKER_02

You picked the wrong one.

SPEAKER_01

I saw the Xavier jersey, and I was like, oh Dana. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, right when I I saw it, I was like, holy shit, it's a Jemiah Duncan. And Jack was like, oh no way. And it was Xavier, not the youth content. Oh yeah. A great breakaway.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. A one-year guy getting a whole goddamn mural.

SPEAKER_01

That is interesting, but also worth it. No, not complaining. Oh, yeah. Not complaining. Good shout, though. Yeah. Yeah. I I mean, I love Jemia and what he did for the program. So, you know.

SPEAKER_04

I had one picture I think I would have preferred. Uh the Grant Gibbs petaway scuffle on the floor. Oh, yeah. The wink. Grant Gibbs I guess Grant Gibbs would be. I would like a Grant Gibbs something.

SPEAKER_06

The thing is with Grant Gibbs, if you would have to do you would have to do the wink, but like if it's the petaway thing, you'd have to have it like a video. Sequence. Like a three-step. Yeah, because just you know.

SPEAKER_04

I kind of thought every picture of him throwing the ball off the back of someone from under. Yes.

SPEAKER_02

If anything like a dunk. You remember uh Trey's dunk over, I think it was North Dakota State guy. Yep. I kind of thought maybe that would be one. But I mean, Jin Jemaia, he looks so cool.

SPEAKER_06

He had one against Iowa, too. Yes. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But I mean Iowa is. It's not like Jemia's looks so cool. And what is it, what did it say on the I I forget what it said.

SPEAKER_01

I just went to talking to his own. Take flight. Yeah, take flight. Which is I mean, that's sick. Yeah. Yeah. Take flight, baby. Yeah. But it was a new look, Jay's. And of course, all of us are um, you know. Thank you, Greg. It was a good time, Greg. But it's the Huss bus. We're all aboard the Hus bus now, and you could immediately tell there's a new culture in town. I thought it was um just walking in there. And it was right when we got there, it was KE TV. Everybody was doing the interviews with um Alan and also BJ.

SPEAKER_06

BJ Davis and Jason Green. Yeah. Um they were the two players that were interviewed.

SPEAKER_01

And but still, even when you watched the news, all you could hear was uh shoes squeaking and balls bouncing. They were already at work and it's time to fucking roll. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I I thought that the tone was set for um for kind of the pecking order, if you would say, by uh when that was going on, they were everybody was kind of just broken up into groups, you know, like the bigs were working on on certain skills. Um the and the guards were on one end, kind of just broken up, just warming up, taking some shots. Yeah. Wes, Wes, Hudson, and I cannot remember who it was, but we were they were right in front of us. And they were they I think they were shooting three shots and then go to the back of the line, and there's only three of them. Wes missed two shots in a row.

SPEAKER_01

I think it's Bug, right? I think Bug had the guy. Yep.

SPEAKER_02

Yep.

SPEAKER_01

I can't believe he just walked into the building. I really am just dumbfounded. Honor Frederick is in the building.

SPEAKER_02

We have an we have an executive producer here. What a pleasant surprise.

SPEAKER_01

Where is Christian?

unknown

He's coming in August.

SPEAKER_02

He's coming in August.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, we miss Christian so much, too.

SPEAKER_02

Oh we're sitting there watching these warm-ups, and and and Wes missed two shots in a row and got the ball back and slammed it so hard and was so pissed at himself. Yeah. And I was like, holy shit, he's a psycho. And I loved it. I and that just kind of it was kind of a precursor for a little what happened in the middle of the day.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, we texted that multiple times. Like, Wes is a psycho. And so like I'm not, I I don't like the media thing is is is is fun. Like, I I was up there for a little bit around the media scrum, and like I was like, I don't I don't want to do this anymore. So I turned and started watching what was going on, and like watching these guys shoot, and I'll give a shel give a shout out to um Barrett's favorite son, Mitch Balak.

SPEAKER_01

Um I love you, Mitch.

SPEAKER_06

Like he him You still owe me for that keg though. Yeah. So him him working with these guys at the beginning, knowing what they're about to go through in practice, and how hard these guys were going at at you know, at shooting and and these drills, like it was it's it's awesome to see. And like he was just like like Bug Edwards and and Hudson and and and Wes, like I mean it was unrelenting.

SPEAKER_01

Let's let's talk about the just the general atmosphere of how you know so Mike, you've never been to a Mac practice, correct? Correct. So Pat and I went had the privilege of at least two or three.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, yeah. Now I'm now that I'm part of BSN, I feel like I'll be I'll be a massive part.

SPEAKER_02

Look at the doors it's open.

SPEAKER_01

You were talking about the at the USA game at here at the B um on Monday. You're like, I'm going to the practice tomorrow. I said, fuck that, dude. So I'm we were jealous. We were jealous. I just texted Mitch right away. I'm like, I'm we're we're coming. Um he's like, hell yeah. Um shut up, Balak. Love it. And also the whole staff. Um it was a a great day to be there. You know, it was nice and busy. It was. Um, but the general atmosphere right away was quite impressive. Yeah. Um even so once you know they cleared with the interviews and everything, it really was um a different type of I mean compared to Mac practices, and this is not a knock on McDermott. I mean, they named the goddamn building after him. Yeah. Um but the intensity was way higher than last summer.

SPEAKER_02

Way higher, especially in even like breakdown drills. Like uh, you know, typically when it went live, that's kind of when Mac would intervene. Mac would be kind of an overseer on individual, you know, skill work breakdowns or whatever. But from the start, Huss was in there and even on the breakdowns, he was dem he was coming end to end in demanding intensity and in well my favorite part was was communication.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that was that was a big part.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, and maybe Greg knew last year, last summer when we went to the workouts. Maybe he did have a foot out the door. You know, and like I said, no knock, but just kind of I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

I think that's just how maybe that's I think that's just how Mac ran his practices. I think Mac really delegated responsibilities to his uh to like Well to Alan. Yeah, to a lot to to Alan and to his assistants, where it's like you are you're gonna run these, and I'll be, you know, I'll I'll be there.

SPEAKER_06

And I think, and I mean, do you look at the practice? I mean, Huss did the the exact same thing. So, you know, when we're sitting there, they had the offensive side, which was run by Mitch, and then the defensive side that I think it was Trey, right? Was Trey running it? Yeah, who was run was Trey?

SPEAKER_01

Well, he was they they kind of switched off because Mitch was doing the they both were doing um two different drills at one point that were all about contact in the paint, um all about almost drawing fouls and also getting on two feet in the paint and and finishing through contact and kind of angles and where you want to drive and and where you want to catch the ball even.

SPEAKER_06

And if you weren't catching the ball in a certain spot, I mean Huss would would stop you and break it down and know you guys, I know you Jack, you mentioned communication, and I and you know that was a massive thing last year, and and I know Mac talked about that in all the practices, like our communication is not good enough, we are working on it, and and the thing is, is you know, we've all been around sports, like you know, sometimes people just don't get it, and and it's never gonna change. And while you hope it changes, it it just doesn't. So, like I know like Huss is trying to hammer that in now, and I know you you guys were down at that end where you know they were doing that, I think it was a five on five drill, and Wes was just cooking everybody, like he was just and and so you know, Jackson was trying to man him up, and then at one point Hudson comes up and tries to take Jackson's spot, like, hey, let me have a chance. And Jackson's like, no, you're not gonna get a chance. I'm gonna try to do this. And Wes, I think Wes was just like, I don't care who you bring, I'm gonna still cook you guys. Oh, yeah, and and so then he made another shot, and Huss stopped, stopped it all and was like, Hey, like, this is awesome that you guys want to talk trash. Like, it's it's cool that you guys want to do this, and you but here's the thing you guys all want to talk when it doesn't matter. I need you to talk when it matters, and if you're not gonna talk when it matters, what are we doing? You know, like what are we doing? And and for Huss to do that when like the offense is kind of rolling, you know, like they're doing some things, and for him to stop that and be like, I don't like what's going on. I think you know, I don't I don't like anything that's going on right now.

SPEAKER_01

Just piggybacking on that exactly, is with Mac practices, I think you know, he would blow the whistle in major mistakes.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I think Huss blew the whistle 200 more times than Greg did.

SPEAKER_06

So many times.

SPEAKER_01

To actually drill drill it into these guys, it's now my I'm on the wheel. I'm the captain. This is the system we're gonna run, and I will I will stop a drill every 15 seconds to ensure it's perfect.

SPEAKER_02

Well, in uh Wesley Rosa, who we all know is a pure development guy. Yeah, yeah, he he came out and he he kind of tried to screen, they were just on one side running running a little ball screen attacking drill. He ran out, didn't hit a guy, and he just kind of leaned and like pushed him, and he he blew it immediately. Oh my god. He said, He said, Wesley, if you set one of those Euro trash ball screens, I'm done. They're gonna call an offensive foul 13 times out of 10. Yeah, he's like, I'd rather you just stand there and not hit him than that shit.

SPEAKER_01

And it was just it was like, oh, well, before before we you know turned the mics on, we were watching the NBA game, and there was a call exactly like that, an offensive foul on a screen that Wesley did. Yeah, and Roshona and I were like, dude, that's exactly what Huss said. That's gonna get fucking called, dude. You can't be moving your feet and just throw a shoulder into someone and then lollygag to the paint. Yeah, no, I want a hard hedge.

SPEAKER_06

I need you to the best was when he did the when Hus did like the the lollygag screen and then the kind of half-ass like jog for the cut or the roll to the basket, and he does it, and I'm like, I was like, oh my god, like I do that to like the fifth grade basketball team. You know, like what are like is this what we're gonna do? We're gonna kind of boop boop boop boop, you know, like I was I mean that was.

SPEAKER_02

And it's not like it's not like those things probably weren't caught when you know when when Mac was running it and everything. But just seeing seeing you know the head guy come down there, completely stop a drill. That's being timed, you know, they only have X amount of time in walk a guy through that you're probably probably not gonna see much of the floor this year. Yeah. And and walk him through it is it's fun. It was fun to see.

SPEAKER_01

Well, the intensity is brought to you by Bush Bavarian? Um if you're gonna make it a beer, you make it a bush bavarian. Oh yeah, let's chug. Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_02

The intensity was incredible, and I think it bled down into the players, and I don't know if that specifically did, or if it was the if the players that now we have this year are just wired a little bit different. But either way, there it was a noticeable difference of communication and yeah, competitiveness.

SPEAKER_06

There was a 100% competitiveness, but also a camaraderie.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, I I do agree with that.

SPEAKER_06

Like there was a competitiveness, and there is going to be competitiveness because as you look at it, and we'll talk about it here in a little bit, the guard like rotation is gonna be so competitive. Like from the one through three, probably, like there is like you are going to have to put your you are gonna have to separate yourself. And and and so that obviously makes things difficult, that makes it challenging when you're when you're looking at practices and you're a head coach and or an assistant coach, and you're trying to get these people to to how are you gonna pop off? How are you gonna how are you gonna make yourself seen? But you know I couldn't you couldn't in Jack, you and I were talking about this, you couldn't I I would lose track of how many if I was trying to count how many high fives, how many, like how many, how many building, building people up that I saw throughout that practice, and and not only on good plays either.

SPEAKER_02

Exactly.

SPEAKER_06

You know, it was like hey, like yeah, like hey, you know, not to I'm not singling anybody out, but like hey, like Rosa, like you you you effed up on that play. The three guys grab grabbing him, being like, hey This is what you this is what you need to do, you know. This is uh I am gonna pick your uh how am I gonna pick you up, you know? Like that's the thing. Like it's not how am I gonna tear you down, it's how am I gonna pick you up. That was that was fantastic.

SPEAKER_01

Um and yeah, look, the camaraderie is the best part too. But also this this breath of fresh air, I really think is it is there's a little bit of renew, like I wasn't there last year.

SPEAKER_06

I don't know, I don't it just seems like I just didn't see that from Fedora.

SPEAKER_01

I didn't see that from there was some toxic energy from graves or there was some there was some toxicity.

SPEAKER_06

I don't know if that's a word, but I'm gonna that's a word, yeah. Thank you. Uh that is a word. They are statistician.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it was it it was very much like you you know if their graves didn't didn't wasn't going 100%, would that have been checked? And who would check it? You know, it's like you know it was probably Ty checking him, and then it's like, oh well you know, why am I listening to you? Why am I listening to you? Instead, it's you know uh Wes you know firing up BJ Wes is like Wes is like, look at me, I'm a I'm an NFL running back.

SPEAKER_06

Listen to me.

SPEAKER_01

How I mean, yeah, it kind of you know I don't know, I don't know how long the players that are competing for minutes in the same position are pumping each other up. Yeah, exactly. Something that I really didn't see too much of last year.

SPEAKER_02

Um at the same time trying to beat their ass.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. No, oh yeah. I mean remember I I mean uh that that block by uh Cottrell on um Edwards, like the reverse layup, and he he beat him baseline and then was doing the reverse layup, and Cottrell, he's gonna be something special, yeah, went up and said, Not today and blocked him around the rim.

SPEAKER_06

Like I mean, I I said it, I said it last year when at the end of the uh the last home game against Providence, you know, sitting behind the bench and like when guys would come off the floor, I there was no like, hey, good job, you know, like hey, you know, like you know, come in, like you know, take a couple minutes, equip below, like we'll you know, get back in. It was like, you know, just a quick

SPEAKER_02

Half ass. I gotta I gotta touch your hand because I have to.

SPEAKER_04

Not to hop back in quick after whatever I missed you guys were talking about. But I sat directly behind next to the bench out in Vegas. As media for as credential media for butches in the me, as we all know. Hell yeah. Uh shout out the crown, which I've been told the players there is the same uh people that run it, so we'll see how that goes. But uh we gotta get you some gear. Mike, you nailed uh yeah, Tim was not thrilled about that. Uh Mike, you nailed it though. When guys were coming in and out of the bench, you're sitting on the bench, there was just no friendship.

SPEAKER_02

It really looked like yeah, no friendship.

SPEAKER_04

And at that point, you had the option to opt out. You didn't have to be in Vegas playing for a 500 team against West Virginia. Yeah. Who holy shit shot the lights out. But uh no, I mean there was not a whole lot of that. Certain guys that are no longer with the program were spending more time staring at the crowd, listening to literally one man yelling. So I can't imagine how they were reacting to an entire crowd in Providence chanting their name. I'm not gonna name names, but just one guy heckling a certain player on the bench. War damn. Uh brother spent the entire game staring at one man, telling him that he was not that great, which was interesting, but I'm not trying to single him out as a whole. It was the entire bench. Oh, yeah. Nobody was remotely checked in. You had you had Jackson out there who wasn't playing. You cannot blame. Jackson was forward as hard.

SPEAKER_06

There's not one person you can blame for a loss. Yes.

SPEAKER_01

No, there's no no, we we really can't dwell on that.

SPEAKER_04

You had Jackson, you had Ty, you had Jason. Those three were given their heart, soul, blood, sweat, all that good stuff on the bench, and everyone else was just glazed eyes.

SPEAKER_01

Nick, Austin, and Blake just didn't get along. Um but that's why I I was happy to see at practice this new Blue Jay.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, how they how they mesh, how they compete against each other. Do they compete? Uh do they yeah, even like when they're stretching, you can kind of see uh you can kind of see clicks of you know who hangs out with who, who kind of next to each other, and it really was kind of uh it was kind of in a meshing who's on the bungee rope with you, yeah. Yeah, yeah, like it's kind of a meshing pot of everybody with everybody, everybody's talking to everybody, and everybody was laughing.

SPEAKER_06

A lot of clapping, a lot of good energy. And I mean, I I mean Wes went down the line, and I you know, it's not like he moved down the line to get close to everybody, but he literally was like, okay, Austin was next to him, then uh you know, Bug was next to that, and then he just went down the line and called everybody's name out.

SPEAKER_01

It was like, hey, let's go today, you know, even competing against like I remember him screaming across the court. That's great DKT Catrell. Like that's like there we go.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, it took me probably 15 minutes to realize that KT is KT is Catrell.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's what they were saying. Yeah, so it's just is KT5.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it was KT5, yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Which took me a long time to realize you know, and then like I you know, the transfer I don't know how long they've been together, you know. Like I just but like not that long, it can't be that long. And so Wes, you know, it was one of the it was funny things. So I don't I don't know if you guys caught it, you know, at right before they kind of got they kind of did their stretching and then they did the off the backboard, like everybody tips it up against the backboard. And so he starts it off and he goes, All right, IT, old man, yeah. They're finishing this.

SPEAKER_02

They call him, they were saying, hi grandpa.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, they call him grandpa, they call him old man, you know, and they're like, Hey, you know, so uh so I mean like that, like right there, like if you don't and it was not I'm not gonna I'm not gonna say like if you don't integrate or like if you're not respected, like but like if you aren't in there, like no, like last year, Nick Graves isn't calling Isaac Trout old man, you know, like that's not that's just not a thing, or behind his back, yeah. Maybe, yeah, maybe behind the back, but like in the back, but not a tier term of endearment. Yes, it like hey, like hey, get up, old man. And so he in and then like so he was the first one, he throws it off the backboard and he sat there. Everybody else kind of filtered off, and he sat there and he was like calling everybody's name out, like, all right, good job, good job. All right, old man, let's go, you know, and then you know, trout punches it, and you know, uh like I don't want to be I don't want to be all warm and fuzzy and you know stuff like that, but like that's cool, you know, like that's awesome. Yes, like that that is when hey, also pumping up pumping up the young boys, yeah. You're struggling on the road against providence. They took a need something, you know. And when and when Jack Spice the Friar and Wes is Wes is gonna call you out, you're not gonna feel like, oh God, what how can I take this guy seriously? Yes, hey, I am a friar in July, in July, Wes was doing this. I'm a mum, you know.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, I mean, I I I was questioning how long would it take until we just turn this into a a Wes Enus.

SPEAKER_06

Love Fest, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Uh Hypefest, but man, that that is that is the best.

SPEAKER_01

We can start sucking his dick.

SPEAKER_02

That was the best leader I've seen.

SPEAKER_04

Besides his play, the chase at the Chase Ellie of Omaha.

SPEAKER_02

Besides how good he played.

SPEAKER_01

I think our our friendship's gonna be a real home run.

SPEAKER_05

Oh shit, there's stickers.

SPEAKER_01

Oh god.

SPEAKER_06

He never stopped talking. From the time he walked into the gym till when he left.

SPEAKER_01

It didn't, I mean he dove, he almost injured himself diving. He almost injured you. Yeah, into the chairs for a loose ball at a moment for loose balls, way out of pounds. He didn't have to do that. Does he know you guys are high-end boosters? Summer summer workout, and I'm like, you almost tore my ACL, bro. Like I have a career. And he gets up and he's just clapping, and he says, Let's run it again. Yeah. And yeah, and he's but also I want to touch again on the new stat, you know.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Um I think it is such a blessing to have two younger assistants that literally can still play. Mitch is literally playing on the scout team. So not DK. Well, DK's awesome, but I don't think he could get up and down. I love Derrick Kelly. They ran out that three-man weave.

SPEAKER_04

Wait, and I am uh you never see DK on the blackjack table? I make him play.

SPEAKER_06

That's a good play. That's a good point. I love DK. DK is the man.

SPEAKER_01

I bet he's just had so much fun in Atlantic City. Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Back in his 20s. Like And then can you imagine when he was at Memphis?

unknown

Oh wow.

SPEAKER_02

I just I just love talk about a big three. But seeing Levit Dre well and another guy.

SPEAKER_01

But seeing Mitch like, you know, put on the Scout team jersey and you know, take it to him too. Friend of the program, right?

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Is Mitch still in red out there playing? Sorry.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know if you guys covered that while I was no Mitch was in a red jersey playing with the managers against yeah. I said the best I was talking about.

SPEAKER_06

I was talking to Jack about this earlier. The best part about Mitch is you know, you're me. I would be like, I'd be in there and I'd be like, all right, I'm gonna kind of pass it around. Hell no, Mitch is Mitch got that first opportunity to get a shot up. Man, he let that fly.

SPEAKER_01

He was drenched in sweat. Oh, he was playing his heart out. Yeah. Well, then he he closed out short on like and see, like Huss was in the assistant position. He's not doing that. So when you see Trey, Trey was like Trey almost got hurt in the uh Oh, Trey was also drenched in sweat. Yeah, playing the defensive, he had a pad that would just hammer kids going to the rack. Yeah, and he's like, hold on, hold on, I need I need like 20 seconds. Those he got the wind knocked out of him.

SPEAKER_06

Those baby blue creighton basketball uh dry fists that they that they had on. Oh, those were sick. Like, oh man. Like I was a sort of Mitch had the robot arms on. He did. He just beating the shit out of his players. He was just like, man, I remember this, so I'm just gonna just beat the shit out of you guys.

SPEAKER_04

I know last time I saw it get this, you guys, but uh Mitch was going with the right last time I watched him in a practice. He went offhand and just still cooked. Like, no doubt was going two on one, him as the one and just absolutely fucked up. Just like me, dude.

SPEAKER_01

Just ambitious. At one point, Mitch Mitch core ambitious next stream.

SPEAKER_02

At one point, Mitch closed out short on Wes, and Wes splashed on his face, and and I think he talked some shit to him. Like he was like, any anybody and everybody can get the work, and I'm also gonna let you fucking know about it.

SPEAKER_01

Well, you guys were down nose to nose with someone, like fuck you, bro. It's like no, no, no, you're the coach, dude.

SPEAKER_06

You can't you can't talk to the players like that. You guys were down on the defensive end, I was down on the offensive end, and you know, I told you this like watching and listening to Mitch coach these kids is amazing. Yeah, because we're we were on Trey's end. Yeah, I mean just what and you know, and and even like the stuff he was saying was like some of these guys, he's just like, what you're doing's not good enough.

SPEAKER_01

You know, he goes, and I know and that's what I was saying, and that's the thing, like the benefit of having a young assistant like Mitch, who he might not have the um the experience as a lot of basketball minds. As a coach, yeah. No, no, that's what I meant. Like a coach, yeah, a coach's coach, but he's got it as a player. I think that's gonna be really beneficial in the end of him being like old school pedigree. I was I was right here six years ago. Like I was right in your shoes, and trust me, boy, that's not gonna work. Yeah, let me tell you how to get CHI riled up.

SPEAKER_04

No, that that old school pedigree is out the door now. It's just that's not how things are done anymore. That's not how things operate.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I just no, and I think that's gonna be great for us. I mean this breath of fresh air. Yeah, Mitch is he's solidly alright. Pretty good plaything. Pretty good plaything. What was that block against uh chase that guy? Nebraska, yeah. Uh uh shout out Mbappe, like chased him down on a breakaway and just pinned him. He can still do that.

SPEAKER_04

Shout out you, Dora. Yeah, but no, it it is kind of a sign of the times.

SPEAKER_01

You'd much rather have some young cat out there that you can yeah, that can also speak to the players uh as young gunners, you know, and bring you to to bear it.

SPEAKER_04

No, no, it's not even that.

SPEAKER_01

It's no disrespect to DK, it's no disrespect to those guys, but great basketball minds, but you know, he can still play right alongside him. Right.

SPEAKER_02

And that's and knowing that you're getting in there and if your coaching over ball fighting over a ball screen in that drill and and you know, fighting through a handoff and that shit and still kind of doing the right things is you're like, oh, okay. You know, if he's doing it, you know, he's not even fucking playing. Yeah, I I better I better get over the top of this. I better take this right this angle to the rim.

SPEAKER_01

You think about like Oregon with like Altman and McKenna, Dana's house.

SPEAKER_06

Like they're not they're not able to and McKenna's going over the screen. He'll show you what's going on.

SPEAKER_04

Still passing his championship ring around UNO camp. Oh yeah. And it's Walker. But like you said, with Wes talking shit to Mitch. How many times do you think Mitch has cooked his ass that made him Yeah? Yeah. I think that's why I think you know Mitch has cooked his ass thousands of times in that portal.

SPEAKER_01

In that portal, I bet Mitch said that's who we need to get. Yeah. Wes. Yeah. That guy can shoot lights out and has the intensity to help this program.

SPEAKER_06

I truly have never seen I'm not gonna lie. I think every single person on that staff saw Wes and was like, that's what we need. Yeah. That is that is what we need. And I know And that goes the same with BJ. I know a lot of people put it out there, and I and I think we all understand like, hey, we're not gonna we're not gonna jump and dive in and drink the Kool-Aid and all that stuff. But oh I did.

SPEAKER_01

I already drank all the Kool-Aid. But like I will pass tonight. Sugar Rush. No, I will pass tonight. I'm going to Jonestown, baby.

SPEAKER_00

Wes.

SPEAKER_06

I mean, first of all, Wes Enus, like his lower body. Are you kidding me? Like, you could tell that, yeah, his dad was an NFL running back, but like his lower body, like, that's the thing. Like, how many times last year did Nick Graves just get blown off of trying to go off of a ball screen, trying to body up? That's not gonna happen with Wes. Like, Wes is just gonna, like, you just like all you you know, you guys saw it. They were basically, I mean, they had all these things to get up on him to push him off the mark, and he didn't budge. No, like he didn't, and and it wasn't like, hey, like we can we're gonna tap you to try to get you, like it was full on, like we're gonna we're shoving the shit out of you. And like, and he didn't move, and he's just built like a brick shit house, and it's exciting.

SPEAKER_01

Um let's um move to this point that I think was a major problem. I would say quite quite a problem. The question of the five, um, which was abysmal last year. I think he's at Auburn. No, we won't okay. Well, okay, there you go. It was non it was non-existent. Non-existent. Jason Green having to hold this team up with a with one shoulder. Yeah, with one shoulder. Jason Green.

SPEAKER_06

Playing the five spot with one shoulder.

SPEAKER_01

Go ahead.

SPEAKER_06

Jason Green!

SPEAKER_01

There we go. I love it. I'm no Nick Baugh, I'm no John Bishop.

SPEAKER_04

But now Jason Green! How to do it one more.

SPEAKER_01

I think they they went out and found three viable options. Uh of course, Oswin is gonna be the starting center. I mean, that's a given. I mean, he literally swept us last year, so fuck it.

SPEAKER_06

Uh I also want to. He was argu arguably top five center in the portal.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. But it and it just l so is Owen Freeman. It's true. It's true. They're different. They're way different.

SPEAKER_04

You just said we're not gonna drink the Kool-Aid.

SPEAKER_02

Someone's gonna someone's gotta level us out here. You need we needed it, yeah. I'm sorry. You're right.

SPEAKER_03

I'm gonna go.

SPEAKER_01

I don't feel very good anymore. Someone's go back to being happy, but no, the Kool-Aid. No, I meant the Kool-Aid's working. I'm dying. I've committed a mass suicide here. Sugar crash.

SPEAKER_02

His no I mean, just his clear ability to play above the rim. It's apples and oranges.

SPEAKER_04

They're not they're not comparable body stuff. That's what I mean.

SPEAKER_06

I mean, there were a lot of people that when Creighton said. Owen was not the Freeman, they're like, I don't think he fits into Creighton's system.

SPEAKER_01

Exactly. I mean, there was a lot of people that said that. I'm not really doubting his ability to ball, but it was not for Creighton at all. And we panicked after losing the best center we've ever had. Right. So when you lose Ryan Cogbunner, and you you kind of just and that was quick. That was like right when the portal opened.

SPEAKER_02

It was almost just Yeah, I didn't find him in you know it just didn't work out.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah. Yeah. But I think this this is more of a calculated let's find the right guards, the right pieces of the puzzle with a center that is physical and does more of the five job better than Owen.

SPEAKER_06

You know, from top to bottom, Oswin is from when I say top to bottom, I offense to defense rim protection, rim runs. He he blows Owen Freeman out of the water.

SPEAKER_02

He matches the profile way more.

SPEAKER_06

Like he and it's not and again, this isn't a this is not a bash on Owen Freeman. No, no, no. But Owen Freeman, Owen Freeman could could do the things offensively for the rim, but defensively not anywhere close. You know, like there was there was literally nothing about Owen Freeman, even Iowa wise, that defensively was that like we all know what Oswin can do.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Like we've all we've seen it.

SPEAKER_01

And that's all that's all I meant was he he he's now we can let let it fly a little better, knowing that we have not not only one defensively, but also a promising freshman in Carter Gibbons, who is still young and has work to be done, but can probably maybe play a minute or two. Paging Jeremy Anderson.

SPEAKER_06

Well, the bit I mean, the big thing is a five for five. You get to he gets to play. Yeah. I mean, yeah, you don't have to worry about redshirting him or anything.

SPEAKER_04

But also, Jeremy, get to work.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and he will. And that guy's awesome. But also, it's nice to have him on our side. Yeah. As much as he was disappointing on offense, Rosa blocked more shots than I've ever seen anyone block in a practice.

SPEAKER_02

He was so good defensively blocking shots and everything that I kind of struggled so much offensively. I was like, do we just play five on five on defense and then just go down and play five on four?

SPEAKER_04

It was that college team that averaged like 200 points a game.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, the uh in Iowa. Yeah, because like Wesley, you could just stand down there and take it first.

SPEAKER_01

I think my I think I saw him take his first dribble ever. I'm sorry.

SPEAKER_02

He went to take a dribble handoff, and seriously, he looked uh Jack actually crossed a line.

SPEAKER_01

Uh but also was I saw him like send Oswin to the moon with a a block. Like, you know, he's if you need Matumbo, there you go.

SPEAKER_04

But like you and I said it the other day having a beverage after if we're getting six to eight minutes and he does that six to ten times. And you have Jason Green at the four.

SPEAKER_01

And then you have Jason Green at the four, then we're set. You know, we don't need your necessarily. We don't need you offensively.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. The vision of piecing it together at the five is a lot more clear than uh shit. I don't even know if we had Alexis or Conan at this time last year.

SPEAKER_02

No, definitely not.

SPEAKER_04

Let alone the unknown of it. I just think a general picture of what we're going for at the five is so much more clear, and that's so important right now.

SPEAKER_01

You couldn't have nailed it more on the head, Pat. Like that is, we didn't even know if any of these guys could play or even join the team yet.

SPEAKER_04

Like we were straight, god damn it, Vicitus learned fucking English at this time. We were no, wait, we weren't even at that point yet.

SPEAKER_01

You bring those nachos from home, yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Um but like he's like Rosa's, and you guys saw it. He is a massive human being. I mean, like, I I I like people are probably gonna be like, okay, you're over exaggerating. Like, dude is huge. So, like, if you can get it, and I know we talked about it earlier, Huss was stopping people, like moving screens, all that stuff. So if he if he figures out, you know, defensively, hey, nobody's entering the lane. I'm gonna block the shit out of it. If you come to the paint, and then and then hey, just figure out how to stand still instead of ball screen. How are you getting around that screen? Like, how are you getting because it's not like he's like a seven two skinny guy? He's big. He can't. Like it really is. You know that's 7 2. Like, because Carter Givens is skinny. Yeah. Like he's a he's tall, but like I think he a buck 30, maybe like soaking wet, but like Rosa's a massive, massive human.

SPEAKER_04

I bet the goal tag to everything, boy.

SPEAKER_06

So you get so you get wide on offense, and he gives you that you know six to eight minutes. How do you get around that screen? If you know, if Bug, if BJ, if West figure out, you know, work with him and use that high pick and roll. Like, I don't know how you get around that. Like, that is, and then roll to the basket, you just gotta throw that thing in the vicinity.

SPEAKER_02

He's ginormous. He seriously is ginormous.

SPEAKER_06

Like, I mean, when people go to CHI for that minute for that minute for that minute for that Minnesota game, people are gonna see him run on the floor and be like, holy shit.

SPEAKER_02

He seriously is shockingly ginormous, right? Like you see him even standing, and you're like, his arms are how fucking long?

SPEAKER_06

Like I it's and his shoulders are big, and he's like that's what I'm saying. Like, he's not a skinny guy.

SPEAKER_01

Like he is, he was like that big monster in episode one of Star Wars that eats that huge fish like that. It's like, whoa, like when Osman, when Oswan went to the rim, Rosa just not a fucking chance. I I was Oswan's a beast too. And it's like, holy fuck.

SPEAKER_02

I was watching him and I was seriously like, is did we get a six seven center? Like when Oswen's standing next to him, and I was like, did we get sold kind of a bill of goods there? Is Oswen tiny?

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, because Rosa Rosa came out first before Oswin when they were all coming out to get ready for practice. And he comes out and I'm like, holy shit. And then Oswin comes out, I'm like, oh.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Like when like when he shook my hand, he grabbed my entire forearm. He just palmed my head like Andre the Giant.

SPEAKER_02

Fucking it's in let's be clear, let's be very clear. He has a long way to go. Yeah, no, exactly.

SPEAKER_01

It's a project, but I'm just saying that that defensive. I'd say right now. Gold every shot.

SPEAKER_02

Carter Givens has is probably a better chance to play more meaningful minutes.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. If Oswin's in foul trouble, I get what you're saying.

SPEAKER_02

Let's move on to it.

SPEAKER_06

Honestly, it's it's more of the like, I think you you put Jason or Trout at the final.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I think that's kind of they were talking about that honestly.

SPEAKER_01

Jason knows what how to do it. He had to do it all fucking year. Yeah. Um Jason Green. Jason Green. But okay, let's move on. Let's move on here to let's talk about Jason Green for five hours.

SPEAKER_06

He might be next.

SPEAKER_01

We don't know. Okay, we could move on. That's okay. We're gonna get to Jason. He just calmed down over there. Well, no. Okay, okay. Let's talk about Jason. But let's talk about um gunpoint. Um so Edwards is trying to prove something that he couldn't TCU. The fastest human ever. Um and he looks quite sharp.

SPEAKER_02

Um he seriously is. I mean, even I I think he's a little rough around the edges offensively, but man does he get to spots on the defensive end. Yeah. Holy fuck. He is fast. And even when they're running so so competitive drills, losers have to run 22s, two two down and backs. He I mean he blew everybody out of the water in those, just on a dead sprint, which is you know something to take into account, but also just play-wise, he truly, truly is quicker and you know, first step wise, faster than a lot of guys. I think I've ever seen.

SPEAKER_06

So I don't know if you can I don't know if you can picture this. So they had the drill, so the offense on the sideline, one person dribbled up, the other guy was on the other side, so they ran to half court, and then two defensive guys, there were two cones, so they both started in the same position. They had to run up, circle the cone, and come back and try to basically beat. So it was a two-on-two offense-defensive drill. So the two defensive guys had to meet, you know. So Bug was so far behind, he goes to the furthest cone, circles it, comes back and beats everybody down the floor. And when I saw that, I was just like, Holy shit.

SPEAKER_01

When he uh do that on offense, he'd be waiting for he didn't have another offensive player with him. Yeah, he was alone and he's like, Hello, anyone? Well, and you can kind of tell the coaches were like, Did you start early?

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, he almost wanted to blow the whistle, like and and then and so like talking to Trey Ziggler afterwards, he even was like, I I haven't seen somebody that fast. Yeah, and he's long, he's long, like the shot's not too bad. It's not too bad.

SPEAKER_02

It's a little weird, like it's same with Wes's same with Wes' is kind of like Wes has that cross crossier face kind of but I mean especially with in the Wes's case, if it goes in, why even fucking touch it?

SPEAKER_06

But but they I mean they basically I mean Trey was like he's actually shot the best out of all of the guards kind of in the summertime. Um, he said it didn't show today, but like he was like, he's shot so well, and and like Jack, what you were saying, I think he's ready to prove himself. Yeah, he kind of got he kind of got a lot of people.

SPEAKER_02

He's competitive too. You could tell, like there was a couple times they were breaking things down and stuff, and and um I think him and Hudson know each other from like playing high school ball or whatever. Yeah, they were in AU together, and like they were going at each other, yeah. And and I fuck I fucking love it. Like I love it so much.

SPEAKER_06

You know, the only thing is he's a little slight of build. Yeah, so like how does that you know when you try some of these big non-conference games to the big east, like how does that how does that translate? Because you know, he didn't get a ton of minutes at TCU. So like was it because of the He's hungry?

SPEAKER_01

The that's it. I mean he's hungry for yeah, uh portenderloin at it.

SPEAKER_02

I think I would maybe be worried about his build more if we're relying on him to go 35, 36 minutes. I mean, I don't think that's the in the cards. Correct.

SPEAKER_06

I mean, my my thing is is there's going to be these games maybe early on, maybe in Vegas, where there's like a lull, and and then you're gonna bring him in and he's gonna be that energy shifter.

SPEAKER_01

You know, he is just you know what he's Ty Davis starting over Nick Graves. He reminds me a lot of ten games if Josh Jones to get more drinks.

SPEAKER_02

If Josh Jones ran like a 4-3 right like I think that's kind of around where I then legend.

SPEAKER_01

But okay, so then we go to BJ, who is obviously gonna be just a defensive specialist.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, can I do an experiment on this one since I wasn't there? What should I expect from him? Like what what was just the overall of all three of you? Like, what did you gather? I don't he'll see. Okay, he's a great defender. He came from San Diego State. What did you guys all kind of gather?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I'm gonna can I go first? Yeah, Hawk. Okay, so um the other day it was a lot of offensive focus, especially down on our end.

SPEAKER_04

Which is better because we know he's it was an offensive day.

SPEAKER_02

It was an offensive day. He first of all, quiet, quiet guy. Like the main focus, like the most coaching that he got was about opening his mouth, being vocal, talking to his teammates. And and then then he kind of seemed like one of those guys who is very feel-oriented and like momentum-oriented. Like he struggled a few times, and you could tell he kind of got down on himself. And then and then he would like hit a hit a step back, and then he kind of got a little bit of a little bit of momentum, a little bit of mojo. But what I I was kind of like giving a little bit of pause was the fact that that was really just offensive work. And I and I think that the way they operated last year was not conducive to Yeah, and and I do think that if we were if we were went there on a defensive day where we're they were they were working on you know ball screen coverages where or or anything, I think that's where like I'm I'm sure it glaze like we're talking about West right now. Yeah, yeah, like I'm sure that that we're really hyped on West because it was an offensive day and Wes is meant for him. Yes, and and and I th I thought BJ BJ kind of just blended in. Yeah, you know he never he didn't do anything.

SPEAKER_01

I I'll I mean he he isn't that big. He's kind of a a small I mean he's a small guard. I mean, but quick definitely has to be the second fastest. I mean and when they were doing the um the you know man in the corner and at the top of the yeah, like kind of the two-on-one. Yeah, and the coach would you know fake out he had like three steals that that was so you know it was definitely offensive oriented that whole time, but I can tell that we're gonna leave almost the offense to other players. Um but he's gonna be like the Danards. He's gonna be like like a very his role will be great.

SPEAKER_02

I I I I feel I feel I if I knew that he wasn't being paired with a guy like Wes that is so vocal and everything, I'd be a little worried. Like if if he was just our lead guard, and I was I would I would have been a little worried because he seems like a guy like last year, vocally. You can tell he's a leader and you can tell he's a competitor and everything, but just not outwardly vocal.

SPEAKER_01

I thought he'd like a really good job with the media.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Definitely he's not like shy. But you get on the court, you get on the court, he kind of just seems like a guy that just goes about his business and does it.

SPEAKER_06

Which yeah, I think he's I think he is going to be that guy that you can just you can just count on. And there's gonna be there's gonna be nothing that flashes off the page about him. Um you know, and he even he even said it in the in the in the press conference that like he picked Creighton because of Creighton's offense and his abil and he won he wanted to be able to go and play in an offense where he could show what he could do. And um and so I I and and I think that so right there it's going to right there that's gonna take him a while because you were in a program that was so defensive oriented and so like you know, you never focused on offense, and now you get to show what you can do on offense, so you you know you're you're gonna have that muscle memory that's like okay am I going like am I gonna am I go am I going too far on the phone?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, also I'd walk in this also with him um choosing Creighton is that I can help this team with my defense as the offense is already pretty refined, right? Or as you know, so almost like I could step into a role that is very important. He kind of reminds me of like a mix between like he's smaller, but he's like Brees Nensu or um like Damian Jefferson, like a mix of like years ahead of them.

SPEAKER_02

His length, but no, no, his length jumps out, but it just his overall size doesn't.

SPEAKER_06

It was weird. Yeah, I was I was actually really shocked when I saw him.

SPEAKER_02

I was like Yes, yeah, his his size you'd see, and especially when I'm sure he plays bigger. Yes, that's kind of what I think. And so does so does Wes. And I mean, Wes, you look at him on the court and he's small. God damn it. Like they're those two next to each other.

SPEAKER_06

Somehow Wes gets brought back up.

SPEAKER_05

He was so fucking shocked. I thought you meant Wes. I thought you meant Rosa plays bigger.

SPEAKER_04

I was like, I don't know how that is humanly possible.

SPEAKER_06

Well, instead of instead of 7-80 he plays 8-2.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, but yeah, but the fact that I mean his pure wingspan and defensive, you know, disruption, I think really, really will come into effect. And like we said, like it was pure purely an offensive day.

SPEAKER_01

But his his role is there.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, I think so. And I think that he yeah, he might just be one of those guys that is a a quiet leader.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Because you don't need he might be he might lead with his play. Yeah, not with his voice.

SPEAKER_04

I'm gonna kind of steal from all Padilla. Um, it doesn't seem like he's gonna be really a stats guy. Yeah, like if you're if you're playing if you're playing fantasy, if you want to go like hockey assist, if you want to play that part of Alley. It just the vibe I've gotten is he's gonna make the right play.

SPEAKER_02

He's a very good basketball player.

SPEAKER_04

Like, and you hate to use the just generic, fundamentally sound, like well coached, but like you look at those Dutcher teams out in San Diego State, and I know everybody's just tossed that around, but that was a weird roster they had last year. It was kind of like a semi-platoon for lack of a better term. Like, okay, we got eight to ten guys that can all play 18 to 25 minutes, and they're all gonna average six to ten points and two to four rebounds and assists. Like it wasn't like stats really told the story on him. I think that's you can tell he's just kind of a gamer, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I guess when I think that 100% that's great. Yeah, that's great.

SPEAKER_04

I didn't I didn't you know watch anything, and offense isn't gonna tell half a damn story on him. But that's kind of when it's he seems like a damn good ball player.

SPEAKER_02

I reserved my kind of judgment because yeah, we didn't see a ton of course it was just a summer workout. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

We're really just kind of we're we're kind of a little bit of speculation. Yeah, we saw one day another one. But but also we know what he can do when he's played for a successful program. So the experience itself is gonna work out. I uh you would hope.

SPEAKER_02

Well, yeah, and that's that's kind of the beauty of uh he comes from a winning program.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You know, so you kind of know that the the building blocks were laid on on doing things that kind of that contribute to winning. And I I just yeah, he was fine. Like from what we saw. I wouldn't.

SPEAKER_04

In a way, is that good though, that you don't really have like, oh, it was this, it was that. He just he's just good.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Is he is he great? Is he excellent? Is he gonna posterize you? No. Is he gonna be in the right spot at all times on defense? And that's the right thing. Is he gonna be in the secondary help? Is he gonna be in the right, which clearly has been my biggest fucking gripe the last year? Yeah. Are you in that secondary spot? Are you ready to help? Are you ready to sag? Are you ready to leak out? All of that. He just seems like he will be in the right spot. A real team player.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, I think that exactly right.

SPEAKER_04

He uses generic bullshit terms. And I asked the question. I think that's the thing.

SPEAKER_02

Exactly right about him. He's never going to. I don't think you'll ever at any point go into a practice and watch him and be in. I don't know, I could be wrong, but like watch him and be like, holy shit, that's the best player on the floor.

SPEAKER_04

No, but he accepted moving from a starting role to the bench and back and forth. And when I they had all sorts of shifted parts over there last year, it just seems like he is a damn good ball player.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he's a he is a basketball player that knows what to do to help win basketball games.

SPEAKER_04

Meet the eye test. Oh, yeah. I don't care about a box score on him. That's kind of what I mean.

SPEAKER_01

We'll find out more as we see.

SPEAKER_04

Sorry, that was the only real thing.

SPEAKER_01

Oh no, I'm just gonna move on. No, I don't know. I'm gonna move on because it's here we are, baby. Um so I have to refresh my drink. Hell yeah. Paris probably corn puppin' grill. Uh another yeah. I'll clean it up with Max Eye Walker. Um let's talk about the real heroes here. Jason Green. Jason Green. Are we going there? Yeah. Jason Green and Jason Green. Well, we we'll talk about all the returners here right now. But let's start, I want you guys to start going at Jason Green's um going back to a role that he is supposed to play. I mean, I think that's gonna be exciting for him and also the Jays.

SPEAKER_02

I think I think the beauty of a guy like Jason Green is you already know that he is willing to do shit that like do no matter what that will help you win. Yeah. So like yes, he can play the five. Ideally, he probably I ideally, I don't think that Huss wants him to that the fans probably don't want him to like extend it, extend it to the show. Yeah. But you know he will, but you also know that he can do shit like at the three, at the four.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. I do I'll say this. I you know, there were the defensive drills, and and you know, this is where you know, if if you're still listening, you know, we're not pumping everybody full of of sunshine and rainbows. You watch your mouth. Um I just I I worry about him in playing these big non-conference games in the big east guarding a three.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

You know, I just you know, I I there's just it's uh and again, I I I don't can he? I I think so because he's gonna have some help, but like you don't you don't know what you have. I mean, we've seen what we have in from the past in Oswen. Can he figure out how to do the verticality like Kalkbrenner? And if he does, then you're fine because you can you can filter some things to Oswin and make things difficult when you struggle guarding the three. But if you struggle guarding the three and Oswin gets in foul trouble, then you're you know you're SOL. And and so that's that's my biggest concern. Well, I I have two concerns with Jason. Um and again, all right about. Yeah, I know, I know. And uh it it's the one is one is basketball like on the floor related. The other one is like man, he's still super quiet. He is, he really, really is. You know, and you think that was a big thing. And you and you come in and you see and you see, and again, this isn't no this isn't the the what's he is he is who he is, he is who he is, but like exactly all speak. You can't force somebody to be a leader, like you lit you cannot, and and you know, if he's gonna be a hey, a follow-me leader because of how I play, how I practice, how I do all these things, that's all she had to do all year. Yeah, and that is and that's fantastic, and and it makes sense, and and people do that, but like man, he's been here for five years, you know. If he could be a little bit more vocal, you know, like it would I think it would go a long ways. Uh, you know, Isaac could do the same.

SPEAKER_01

Hey, I uh but one of the we'll get to that. We'll get to that.

SPEAKER_04

Hey, I one one of them has like some versatility and is worth putting on the court.

SPEAKER_06

I think that do you think that Jackson Man he does not like when you're sorry, Mr. Trout.

SPEAKER_05

Sorry, Mr. Trout. I appreciate the beer.

SPEAKER_02

Steve Ashworth do you think that Steve Ashworth do you think that Jackson offers any kind of flexibility towards I don't know, maybe Jackson's shifts down and in you know we have a setter and we have power forwards now.

SPEAKER_03

We didn't have either last year. That's it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we play five out, but we got you know, Jackson maybe technically be our five, but Jason's probably gonna guard our five, and then we have a six foot like Jackson looks big as a like a like a like a like a death lineup.

SPEAKER_04

I mean, I mean I have the I have the Denzel Mahony. With Denzel, yeah.

SPEAKER_06

That's you know, that's what I'm saying.

SPEAKER_04

But you know not as uh what you have to do as a An option.

SPEAKER_06

Jackson is Jack Jackson is so long. I know, I know, but holy shit.

SPEAKER_02

He's taller than Oswen.

SPEAKER_06

When was the last game we saw? Was it Iowa State when we proclaimed we were going to the national championship? No, he played a Gonzaga.

SPEAKER_04

He played a couple after that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And oh fuck us. Fuck us. That's the last time I remembered. But I'm just saying, like sorry, Iowa State's the last time I remember. To be honest, we lost him scooter around arenas the whole last year. I and he looked good. I'm not doubting anything. But I do feel like we have to wait and see in real time. Uh like I mean, he is he looks he looked good.

SPEAKER_06

I mean we talked about like Rosa and how like big he looks like when Jackson on the defensive end like gets the arms extended, like holy shit. And we know what he can be a disruptor.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I know, but you you never know what an injury can do.

SPEAKER_02

I get that, I get that 100%.

SPEAKER_04

Uh pretty recent, so not really a deep cut, but Mason Miller. I think how dare you. What what one injury? Okay, he's gonna come back, he's still gonna be a 40% guy.

SPEAKER_05

Motherfucker can't shoot. Yeah. He forgot where the hoop was.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, from what I saw, I mean, that's not an issue from Jackson. Yeah. But I mean, I think I I get what you're saying.

SPEAKER_04

I'm just trying to but even before I'm the negative boy today. Yeah, I'm just gonna go. I'll tell you from Jason I'm the negative boy.

SPEAKER_06

I'll say just watching Jack, Jackson plays with in a different like confidence. Well, he's just he just played better than that. Like he just and he's and he's better. He's just better. He's a better, and this is not a knock on on Mason. Like Jackson's just with that being so recent, it's just hard to forget. Jackson's just a better basketball player. And he when he was healthy before the injury, yeah, A. Was better than anything Mason Miller ever brought. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And Jackson Jackson is Mason loved the big decent three-point shooting.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

Jackson is down for the challenge. Like he was ready to guard ones, twos, threes, fours, and fives. Yeah. Like he exactly in everyone.

SPEAKER_04

Oh no, he's a much better player, but just shooting. Yeah. So I it goes away. It comes and goes.

SPEAKER_06

I talked with him a little bit after practice. Like there's a fire with Jackson. Like you could tell how much missing last year bothered him. Oh, yeah. And then the and not only the fact that you you're just a competitive kid, but then the fact that Creighton struggled and how much and having to watch that. Exactly. And how much and how much Creighton means to him. The hunger. Yes. And so now and now I have this, and now I have a guy like Oswen. I have Wes, I have Bug, I have BJ. So I have I have HUD. Like I I have my guys. And so like he I mean, and I we talked about it a couple times at the end of podcast last year. I don't think we talked enough last year about how massive it was that he made it to lose him.

SPEAKER_02

To lose preseason second team all beginning.

SPEAKER_06

Like he was I I don't I don't think it I don't think we talked about it as nuts. He's a 6'10 guy that can stretch the floor and do multiple things.

SPEAKER_02

Is he our highest rated recruit ever?

SPEAKER_06

Uh is he still?

SPEAKER_02

I don't know if like technically but I think Cottrell is now. Okay. But but I mean just the fact that you know like he was he was well thought of at the time, very good freshman year. At the time he was the highest, and you know in and yeah, preseason, I think they had him second team all big east. Like he was ready to you know take the.

SPEAKER_06

I mean, there were I mean, we were talking last year, like if things depending on how things went, he could be Creighton, he could have been Creighton's best player last year. I think for sure. And then and then all of a sudden you're a month and a half in and he's gone. And then you don't you don't talk about it enough because you think you have the depth, and then all of a sudden the depth is not there, and then and but then like you know, this year, like I mean, just standing next to him, like the dude is like solid.

SPEAKER_01

He I'm like really thickened up, right? I'm not doubting I'm not doubting him. I'm just saying Oh no, I get it. We we haven't seen game time jackers, yeah. Uh and so but I think this could be the exact missing piece of the puzzle that can really create a dangerous Creighton Blue Jays.

SPEAKER_06

Okay, so I'm gonna I'm painting a picture here. So I mean you remember when Creighton's offense was rolling at its best. High pick and roll, you put a shooter in the corner. You had Mitch Ballock in the corner. How do you so what do you what do you guard?

SPEAKER_01

Look at the rest of the list.

SPEAKER_06

You know? Like what do you guard? Do you guard the lob or do you guard the three-point shooter? So now you got Wes, you got Oswin, high pick and roll, Oswin going to the basket. There's so many and you got Jackson in the corner.

SPEAKER_01

I'm just saying, how do you guard that? Or even how about this? Hudson Greer, who looked also way bigger. I was waiting in the middle of the room.

SPEAKER_04

Sorry, sorry, sorry, five seconds. Uh most improved player of the year, the biggest odds are available. Jackson McHandrew is your favorite.

SPEAKER_06

Yes, there we go. There's not a doubt on my mind.

SPEAKER_04

Five to five to one if you'd like to dip into the game. He could literally win biggest player of the year. Uh the second guy I would follow up with is Najee Hines, the second option, which nobody likes him. But it's appealing. We can carry on. UConn's. Sorry, that was my that was my five. That was my five-second quarter. I was shopping the other day.

SPEAKER_01

You are our gambling expert, and we have to do that.

SPEAKER_04

Uh no, that we have no sort of experts of that nature in this field of work. We are professionals, we're credential media. I will say anything.

SPEAKER_02

Anytime there was like a gang rebound or anything, and Jackson was in there and he landed, and I was like, oh, be careful with my ball.

SPEAKER_06

Oh shit. They were doing they were doing him, don't touch him. Don't touch him. They were doing the drills, and you know, and then all of a sudden, you know, they'd kick it out to a shooter, and they'd have multiple things going on, and somebody would make a shot, and that ball would land like right underneath the basket, and these guys were going up for dunks. I was like, oh my god, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Please don't land on the ball. I'm like, mana Jays, dive on it, get it out of the way.

SPEAKER_01

Let's go to Hudson. Yeah, let's please.

SPEAKER_02

Hudson. Hey, everybody will follow my orders. Okay. Hudson seriously looks like if anybody on that course on Tuesday looked like a big East basketball player. Hudson. Hudson has the right behind Wes. Kind of, hey, we gotta keep it going, or it's all about it. But Hudson looks just you you just look at him.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. He has the look. So when we were driving home from that practice, Pat, like you and I were saying, like, so you know, last year he still kind of looked like kind of a freshman. Uh a walk-on, you know, like not built. When I walked into the McDermott Center, I was like, bro, give me all the stock. Not a boy. He like he looked his shoulders are broader. He's growing, he's a man. Um I want all the stock. I want every penny like he every cent of that stock.

SPEAKER_02

He looked like he already put on 10-15 pounds.

SPEAKER_06

And like I oh, yeah, like we were saying, like he put on the weight, but it looked like he got slimmer. Yes. Like fit, more athletic. Yeah, he got more athletic, and I will say the number one thing as a guy who is a shooter, his release got so much quicker.

SPEAKER_02

Yes. He used to kind of pop his butt out, kind of have it had a little slower release.

SPEAKER_06

And this year, like his shot is say it with me, Mike. Boom. That no dip is coming. No dip.

SPEAKER_04

That no dip is coming. No dip.

SPEAKER_02

And what I like too is a lot of these drills, like they would they would do you know, two-on-ones, kind of uh, you know, transition type type drills, and they would encourage our guys to go dunk on Oswald, go dunk on Wesley, go go dunk on challenge, yeah. Like go punch that shit. And and and it didn't matter if it was like Catrell or Hudson, it didn't matter who it was, like those guys were attacking the rim. Poach. And I like I like that. And especially, I mean, Hudson can get up there and and he's strong when he goes when he goes up there.

SPEAKER_06

I mean, if you if you look at like you could arguably say he's um one of like topics. Most athletic guys on the team. Yes. I'll I'll go. I guess like his the only thing that's gonna hold him back is defense. Because I still he I still think he he struggles with a few concepts on the defensive end, like that's fair, like how to help, and like and it, you know, and this and this year is a big change.

SPEAKER_02

This year is a I think this year defensively, there's gonna be so many different you know, fundamentals or you know, concepts.

SPEAKER_06

Honestly, I think that's gonna be the biggest thing, and you know, not to wrap put a wrap on on any of the roster or anything like that, but like how these guys play defensively will one hundred percent determine how many minutes go around.

SPEAKER_01

I did not see Hudson miss one corner three either side. It doesn't matter.

SPEAKER_06

I'm gonna and a guy did, and that's and that's my guy. I mean, I know he just called me out on it, but like I'm gonna stake my claim.

SPEAKER_04

Just I'm gonna just park this take here and okay with it. Hudson's gonna be the best player on the team by the end of the year. That's a bull. I like it. I like this idea, but here's a high.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know if you want to say if it's going into the year or I won't buy that.

SPEAKER_04

If it's a hype machine or what, but no, I the that kid is so much more talented.

SPEAKER_06

If Hudson Greer is the best player on the Jason Green problem from last year. Creighton wins the biggest.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, I was going the other way.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I was gonna say if he's our best player, we have problems with that. No, I don't know.

SPEAKER_06

I think by the I think by the end of the year, there's I'm not sure if I don't think we have issues because I think that he has that talent that he can make that leap over everybody else. And everybody else, everybody else falls in the world.

SPEAKER_01

It'd be hard to get past Jackson and Wes. And just from what I saw on TV. You gotta find out. This is not fair. This is speculation.

SPEAKER_02

Like Wes by the end of the podcast, Wes will be the top five pick in the draft.

SPEAKER_06

I might be pretty I might be pro I think I think teams, I think teams are tanking already to get Wes.

SPEAKER_02

He seriously was that good. I mean, he was unreal. I might be projecting on that. I'm gonna project on that.

SPEAKER_06

The dive on the floor right in front of you guys when it didn't matter. I was like, I love I love him.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, I just he was screaming in Jackson's face that somebody else better guard him. Yeah, and then pro and Jackson refused, and then he proceeded to hit.

SPEAKER_06

And then he did this three or four more shots, and it's been he did that spin move, like the and then shoulder bumps just on ice skates.

SPEAKER_07

I was I was loving it.

SPEAKER_02

He's I mean, that is it's fire, it's the fire that we need. And I think Hudson has that too. I think Hudson dude Verd.

SPEAKER_04

You go to Verde, I am betting on you, I am backing you, you know how to win, you know how to hoop.

SPEAKER_01

The weaponry we have this year looks good. We have a a you find a way to get a guy like that on the court, and also a little more, and also I said it three times. This is my third time, I think.

SPEAKER_02

Breath of fresh air, a new, a new coach, a new system, a new sort of tenacity that yeah, coaching staff that it will coach you hard, maybe coach you harder because the it's a new you know, trying to impress, you know, even the the manages will kind of be on you like a little bit of fire streaming.

SPEAKER_06

And I don't know, but I mean you guys you guys went to practices with Mac. When practices ended, did they have laptops out? Yes, the assistant coaches? Okay, yeah, like I thought that was really cool.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah, the the they were always doing female that was never yeah, they were always like easy up to the colour.

SPEAKER_02

The attention to detail was always there for sure.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Mac the thing is that I think is different. It Mac would he would kind of just be at half court and he would kind of hop in, but really it was just up to the coaching staff to kind of run. This was Huss was was not only inner in the individual sessions, but the one that was demanding the energy and demanding the intensity.

SPEAKER_01

What I thought was uh like I one of the drills he was like Blue Swiss, who said, All right, that was about at a four. If you're gonna be a Creighton basketball player, it has to be at a nine or ten or above. And I was like, I thought they were like moving pretty good. I was like, whoa, like holy shit.

SPEAKER_06

And then it went, you know, when he was like, Oh yeah, and that's there's a lot of media people here, so I can't actually say what I want.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. He's like, I'm gonna try and keep my cool.

SPEAKER_01

There's there's too many people here for me to actually be as mad as I am right now. And that was like, that's the coolest thing I've ever heard. All right, like um, luckily KE TV's here and WOtherwise.

SPEAKER_06

I wouldn't want KMTV to be like, oh we have a close practice.

SPEAKER_04

John Walker's gonna fucking store brewing.

SPEAKER_02

Have we talked about control at all?

SPEAKER_06

No.

SPEAKER_04

Well, please do. That's what I have. We didn't.

SPEAKER_06

We've we've sprinkled him in a few times.

SPEAKER_01

Can I do do this to just because I O C D. Yeah, you have your um and I'll just do it real quick. And we don't I don't want any comments.

SPEAKER_05

This is this is my show.

SPEAKER_01

No, no, no, no. No, it's just my bathroom break for everybody. It's just easy. Yeah, it's just easy. Uh the Jeffrey monologue. Austin Schwartz is like working on a hamstring niggling injury. Like nothing bad. Ankle? Ankle? Yeah. His leg. He was grabbing, yeah. But was doing good like workouts. Looks he'll be fine, but wasn't able to partake in the uh 100% one on or five five on five drills.

SPEAKER_06

So at the at the end of practice, he was monologue. David's going through some drills. I just want to Jack had left. I'm just I'm I'm bringing I'm helping out here. His shot was so fucking good. He is like I I you know he hit the mid-range and then he stepped back for three, and I was just like he is bigger than I remembered.

SPEAKER_02

And he was when he was standing next to guys.

SPEAKER_01

Um like his shot was just pure. So it it and we'll get back to Schwartz in a sec, real quick. Um and we'll leave it right here. IT is gonna IT. Yeah. That's this it look, no offense, not much different.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, still No, those are still the best beers I've ever had, Mr. Trout. Like you said, those.

SPEAKER_01

I like I hey hey, I love I love the Nebraska boy, love it. He'll if he's not making shots, don't you can't blame. Yeah. And but also still he'll be the best teammate. Was still part of yes, that's what I like. That's what I like. He was high five and he loves the camaraderie. He's a good teammate. He just wants to win.

SPEAKER_02

Well, and you can tell, you know, just from going back to what you're saying, the very when they started the practice, you know, he's the guy that they're throwing off the backboard, the guy to go dunk it. Teammates like him. Old man IT. Old Nats guy 8, 9, 10 on the bench. Old man IT. Yeah, you don't do that shit to guys.

SPEAKER_06

If he's on, if he's on, it's a great point. If he's if he's on, but if he's your ninth, tenth best player. You're in a really good spot. Really good spot. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

A lot of a lot of a lot of the shitting I've done is because we've been dependent on him to fill minutes. Like, I can't like it.

SPEAKER_01

Can you imagine what he would do in the summit league at UNO? Fucking run it.

SPEAKER_04

No, Crutch has some good, but we want him for now.

SPEAKER_01

No, I'm just saying, IT is not a bad basketball player by no means.

SPEAKER_04

He's a really luxury that is kind of the scapegoat. And I'm I'm as guilty.

SPEAKER_02

I spent a week trying to figure out how to fucking guard him. I think Michael fucking Jordan. I'm as guilty as anybody, but I know you've got Spooner. Spooner has nightmares.

SPEAKER_04

Coach, I know you got me on that that one mid-range step back he hit last year.

SPEAKER_02

I think it was two years ago at UConn. I just want to do it. And Mitch Mitch said it. He said he he yelled out Dirk and he shot it. It was two years ago.

SPEAKER_06

Shot clock running down in Yukon.

SPEAKER_04

He got thrown in spots where the current role he has. It's fine. He was being asked to supersede that at certain points the last year or two. He shouldn't. That's not his fault. He shouldn't be 25, 28 minutes a guy looking to create. He should be able to come in, do his thing for 12 to 18 minutes a game. If he's hot, ride the hot hand.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_04

And if that's that eighth guy, ninth guy this year, that is absolutely perfect.

SPEAKER_02

He looks like he slimmed down a little bit. Yeah, I mean, he's not a big thing. Then again, Mr.

SPEAKER_04

Shroud, thank you for those beers of Vegas.

SPEAKER_02

He's never gonna be the most athletic or anything like that, but he is a guy that you get you come in and you you know Oswin puts pressure on the rim, you know, Wes, BJ puts pressure on the rim and they're attacking, and you kick it out, and he has a standstill three. I'm so completely happy with that shot. And he even if he's making them, missing them, it's it's a great shot.

SPEAKER_01

Here's the last thing we're gonna talk about roster-wise. Um as we've been talking for a long time. Holy hell. Love it. Um you let the boys we talked about um KT Control.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we barely touched on him KT5.

SPEAKER_01

But and then I mentioned Swartz and like so where do the minutes go? Um 200. When when Austin is healthy and well, and you have a freshman in KT who looked good. He looked good.

SPEAKER_02

And looked fearless. He tried to dunk on Oswin once, and I was like, holy fuck, dude, he had balls.

SPEAKER_06

And Oswin was like, I don't think so. Yeah. Like, and that was when little boy, that was when, like, you know, when there's media there and you get the audible, like, ooh.

SPEAKER_02

What I like about what I like about KT is Wes has clearly taken him under his wing. Like when they were doing things you weren't here, yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Jack and I talked about that. Yeah like literally KT's Wes's shadow.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, like Wes, like he would miss a couple shots, do something, and the first person like coaches would be yelling at him or whatever, whatever. First person right next to him would be Wes. Yeah telling him telling him much to do when he was like, You're good. All right, all right, yep.

SPEAKER_01

Hey, believe hey, believe in yourself, JJ.

SPEAKER_06

So I mean, so I don't know, I don't know who that is. I don't know if that's if that's Cottrell that was like um help. Um I'm with this guy. Or if Wes is like I see the the force in him.

SPEAKER_01

I see.

SPEAKER_06

I see it, I see a stud. Come with me, you know. So like, you know, they kind of at the end of practice they broke up and they went off and uh and so you know it continued. Cotrell went with Wes and they went, you know, to the far court and did some things and worked together. And I mean, like that, regardless of who did what, you know, that's amazing. Mentorship.

SPEAKER_01

Do you think that KT's competing for minutes? I think so. 100% off the ring.

SPEAKER_02

I think so. He looks way bigger than I thought, yeah, too.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, and you know what when I first saw him, I was like, I was trying to figure out. I'm like, okay, so who is this who's who what transfer is this? You know, because I was like, I didn't think he was a true freshman, you know. Like I was looking at like, okay, so like what school did he come from? And then all of a sudden he put his thing, you know, he put his jersey on. I was like, oh shit.

SPEAKER_02

And this this doesn't have any anything to do with basketball ability. But after practice, you know, we're all sitting there chopping it up, whatever, with just us old guys. Um it was Catrell and probably not a coincidence, Wes are the guys they come over, shake your hand, hey, I'm Yeah. I'm Joe. I'm Wes. You know, and you're like, that I've never had a player do that.

SPEAKER_06

I want to make sure that all of these players get their due. They all did that. Oh, okay. Okay. Okay. So I just, you know, I but we're biased. But it no no no no. I just it's it's awesome, you know, but like it was kind of a you know, some of them were off doing their own things, you know, working with Jeremy Anderson and doing their own thing. So then they came over afterwards, but like they all, and like, you know, I I'm a decent sized person. When Oswen came up, like he swallowed my hand. He's like, I'm Oswen. I was like, what happened to my hand? Where did it go? You know, like, but I mean, like, that's I don't know. I mean, you guys were there. Did that happen last year? I don't remember, but we also didn't necessarily hang around with like media. Okay. But like that.

SPEAKER_01

Also, Oswan was at Providence.

SPEAKER_06

No, no, no. I no, I'm just saying, like, in general.

SPEAKER_01

He definitely did not shake Jack's hand last year.

SPEAKER_06

No, I'm just saying in general.

SPEAKER_01

No, I was not welcomed. Did anybody did any players do that?

SPEAKER_06

No. No, not no, no, not as yes, okay. That's what I was asking. Yeah. You didn't you didn't go to you didn't go to Providence every game after practice?

SPEAKER_02

Did he go to a Kim English practice?

SPEAKER_01

And I was trying to get back to the hotel safely in Providence, not getting my ass.

SPEAKER_06

I think he remembers you. A grip of from Friars. He asked me, he goes, Did that guy over there get taunted by the Friar? Were you the guy?

SPEAKER_01

I remember him fighting fighting my classmate at the dunk.

SPEAKER_02

But just seeing that in the Cotrell was the first one that did it, and then Wes was next. Yes. And I was like, I wonder if that is Wes' is kind of mentorship, yeah, kind of rubbing off on him. Yep. Which is great. I mean, it doesn't, once again, it doesn't mean that he's gonna fucking score the ball.

SPEAKER_01

If you want to pre-meal at Barretz, you gotta shake my fucking hand.

SPEAKER_06

But I think I wanna I think that's it. I think that's Al Huss. Yeah, 100%. That's that's a Huss thing. Like, hey, like the this community loves you. Yes. Oh yeah. Yeah. Like this this community loves. You're a part of the community. You're a part of the community. All these people want you to be successful. See those athletes over here. Hey, minus Gary Sharp, who was sitting next to me.

SPEAKER_04

No, if you're still listening, that was a good shot. If you're still here, valid.

SPEAKER_01

Um, but like but but I guess what what I was saying is but but we didn't see Austin play with these guys. So there's gonna have to be, I mean, there's 40 minutes in the game.

SPEAKER_06

Just 200 minutes. I will say just allocating those minutes. Just sitting there at the end talking to a couple coaches. They are they are very, very high on Austin, and they, you know, they're just like, as soon as we can get him up to speed, like fitness-wise, they're like, We have we have something. Because I mean, you just look, you got you got Wes and BJ at one and two, you know, like you do. You got yeah, you got you got Austin, you got you got Austin at a three, you got Jackson, Jason at a four, you got Hudson at the three. Exactly. Like yeah, this and and I somebody's gonna get left out. I guess that's what I'm saying. I get your question. Like, what do we do?

SPEAKER_02

But I think the how competitive the practices were, I think that's great uh in terms of filtering, yeah. And letting them, yeah, like, hey, you want to compete for for playing time.

SPEAKER_06

Maybe stay in front stay in front of your band on the water right now, especially with with Austin, and you saw how Austin played defense last year.

SPEAKER_04

Like, uh no, I actually didn't see that, Mike. I actually missed him playing defense, my bad. I did dad maybe I missed something, but no, I didn't I did not see that.

SPEAKER_06

I do think this is this Austin was always a multiple year guy. Playing defense last year. Quote unquote. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

That's the video on it. We also thought he was gone. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

No, I would I'm I'm I'll backtrack on that a little bit. He got the right, he changed his tune, and he means he's getting back. I did a podcast. I think a lot of people die.

SPEAKER_01

No, no, it's not just me. I was the only one that pointed at me like that. Hey, I was the only one that said he was coming back. Mike, there was yeah, there was a Cobe to Jesus moment.

SPEAKER_06

I did say he was coming back. There was a Cobe to Jesus moment. The only vocal leader. Hey, we had a good talk, man.

SPEAKER_03

Don't not you and me. I'm talking about the plan.

SPEAKER_06

But me and Austin. Either way, we have a good crop to Jesus between you and me. Either way, we we have a good crop.

SPEAKER_02

We have a good competitive crop, and I like that a lot more.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I I don't think we could even really name a starting five at this point. It's too early. No. Um we'll have to see further in the fall where Ty Davis to spotted it. I have three of the five. He'll start for Samford.

SPEAKER_02

And I think that we have a coaching staff that push will push that fact. Yeah, like the fact that they're and they're not gonna care about seniority.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, they're not gonna give a shit.

SPEAKER_02

Well, that's what I'm I'm kind of excited to uh like a you know, Catrell um, you know, maybe forcing CG a little bit less, but of you know, in the past, Mac not a guy that will play, you know, true freshman guys that are new to the program. Mack was definitely more about a seniority guy. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Where this is like, no, who's better?

SPEAKER_06

I've the best out there. I think by like late December, early January.

SPEAKER_01

Late December back in 63.

SPEAKER_06

I would I'm gonna like I'll say right now, I don't it'll be really tough to keep Catrell off the floor. He really looks like Truman. Like that's he really looks like Trump. Like that's just that's just my my early thoughts is like come like January, I it'll be really difficult to keep him off the floor.

SPEAKER_02

Plus he has a sick super science tattoo. This is a good segue.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, if you're he wasn't even alive again.

SPEAKER_01

Here's a good segue here, then we'll find out more as the non-con schedule was released Tuesday. Um quite the slate, I'd say, uh, for Huss's maiden voyage. Um I think uh first off, the two exhibition games should just those should be regulars.

SPEAKER_06

Those are those are just badass. We should set head to aims, right? No. I don't have to be a little bit more.

SPEAKER_04

If it's gonna be like last year's result, no.

SPEAKER_06

Well, last year's result in exhibition was amazing. Exactly. I don't remember. We were talking about national championship. Yeah, that went south.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that went south real quick. Nick Graves is so good. Oh, he's gonna be grey. Wasn't starting in late December.

SPEAKER_05

So I hope we're like Ty will help us play hard. That we suck. That's what I was, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But opening up against uh the Ruse, Kansas City, opening night, again, and then Lemoyne, which I mean, those are two pretty much walkovers. Um you know, knock on wood. But then away in Manhattan, Kansas State. Um that's an interesting one. You know, that's still a power Belmont new coach from Belmont.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. A little get back.

SPEAKER_01

I'd go. Probably, you know, last time I watched a creating game in Kansas, that didn't go well. I think we talked about it.

SPEAKER_06

That might have been one of the worst first halves. Well, that was a low point I've ever seen.

SPEAKER_04

That was when we made some decisions on lineups and uh it happened. That was really a low point. But we learn and we grow, we move on.

SPEAKER_06

I we for we forget about those things, but we don't. We keep the pain and we bring the pain to keep it. Iowa in Des Moines.

SPEAKER_01

Oh no.

SPEAKER_06

Great. I'll be great.

SPEAKER_01

Fuck yeah. That'd be two trips in a week. Fake ass fucking neutral game. Neutral, yeah. I just here's my in the Iowa capital.

SPEAKER_06

I really I really want to I want to ask this because I are are you believers in Ben McCollum? Yes. You're dumbass if you're not.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I gotta be.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. I mean, honestly, you know, I mean he was so I get everybody just stumbled on it this year.

SPEAKER_04

No, you're an absolute dumbass if you never realized what I'm saying.

SPEAKER_02

I love Ryan Hawkins so much.

SPEAKER_04

He's turned down every D1 job in the world for a decade. You're an absolute fucking dumbass if you don't think he's the elite.

SPEAKER_02

But also fuck Jaden Kuhn.

SPEAKER_06

So fuck Iowa. Here's my big question. How do you really how do you really feel?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I mean, if you want to argue that he's not the best coach in the country, good luck. Oh, I will country, yeah. All right, he took a just a mediocre Iowa team to the elite eight.

unknown

I know.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, but he had to beat Nebraska. Bennett Sturts was so that makes him even better, right?

SPEAKER_02

Elite I will be curious to see how he operates with Bennett Sturts.

SPEAKER_06

With out guys that have been in his system forever.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. He's done it with dudes, he cycled through dudes forever. You know what? Never mind. I'll just I'll bite the bullet. Here's the thing. I'm just gonna zip it.

SPEAKER_06

I I actually I I agree with you. I think Ben McCallum is a great coach. I just it's one of those things you just you just wonder.

SPEAKER_01

You know, you I think I think he will he's not for everyone. I think he's he's he's not for everyone. I think he's gonna be unfortunate. And also to say best in the nation is uh that's a stretch, but I he is uh an elite coach.

SPEAKER_04

I also yeah, I think D2 guys and guys you've never heard of to an elite eight.

SPEAKER_02

I think that also whenever you play Iowa, you kind of have to beat them. Yeah, like they Iowa's like a Ben McCollum coach team is gonna play how they play basketball no matter what. And then you're gonna kind of have to play better than them and and and make them have to play out of their system, which they rarely do.

SPEAKER_06

I think it's I think it's just I think it's gonna be an awesome test for Creighton early on. I'm scared, but November 15th.

SPEAKER_01

I think Manhattan's a test. I didn't they weren't the same week. I've got a both shit.

SPEAKER_06

I do I do too. I I I agree with that. I just think because of what Hawk said and the way Ben McCollum is, like I just I just think that that like it's it's just two good games, it's just three great games back to back.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, as we get to the national champions, Michigan and Las Vegas, shout out Christian. Um, who obviously will it's probably the hardest test on this.

SPEAKER_06

Do they have a do they even have a coach yet? Yeah, Boyton.

SPEAKER_01

Did they name Boyton the head coach?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, yeah, okay. They're holding it together for a year and then taking shirts.

SPEAKER_01

And then Edwards has to play his old teammates.

SPEAKER_04

Or Austin.

SPEAKER_01

Or yeah, yeah. It's it's a TCU or by Ivy. Fuck Pete Witt. Fuck you, Nick Selene. Okay, I'm sorry. I love you guys. You're actually some of my good friends. I didn't mean that. Oh god. And then a TBD on the third game in Vegas.

SPEAKER_06

So I mean that technically could be Alabama.

SPEAKER_02

Alabama Gonzaga would be an we could play Gonzaga again.

SPEAKER_01

That would be a farce. Right.

SPEAKER_02

That would be annoying.

SPEAKER_01

That would not be cool with me. But that'd be a bit of reprieve. And then we played the Summit League. Or is Oral Roberts still in the Summit League? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So many people jump shipped. Yeah. Yeah. Um, but Oral Roberts at home.

SPEAKER_06

And then remember the bracketbuster game against Oral Roberts? Let's not even go there.

SPEAKER_01

Let's not go there.

SPEAKER_06

Booker Wood Fox.

SPEAKER_01

Let's not go there.

SPEAKER_06

Sorry.

SPEAKER_01

We're not I'm just not gonna have it.

SPEAKER_06

I just every time I gotta bag this out.

SPEAKER_01

Every time I I just we we we could talk till fucking 2 a.m. I don't care. And then we go to what is revenge time, Nebraska. December 5th. That is uh a must-win. It's a must-win. We gotta fucking win that one. That's just a must-win. It's I almost killed myself, Julie. I was on full Woodman watch. The security guards were like, you can't go up the uh staff elevator.

SPEAKER_06

Mutual when you were when you were when you were when you're when you're addressing all Creighton gear, they're like, We're watching. We're watching.

SPEAKER_01

Give me your fucking pass. Give me your mutual pass. I was right there with the golden sewer in Lincoln, like Mutual watch. I'll jump off one of the balls. The penis of the planes, baby. I'll fucking jump from it.

SPEAKER_06

I mean, you guys, I mean, you guys all watch the Al Huss uh introductory press conference.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah. And he has receipts for all the people that were and then our probably second biggest test in Gonzaga at home, which is just gonna be a fun Jesuit battle. Yeah. Um which, you know, hopefully we're kind of seasoned, kind of find our group.

SPEAKER_02

I love that. I love our non-con. I think just battle test the fuck out of them.

SPEAKER_01

And Mount St. Mary's to round it out before Big East play.

SPEAKER_02

Tournament team. Kind of a lot of people. It's not like these aren't this isn't good.

SPEAKER_01

This like Ken Palm has to be like, shit, do you do it even UMKC? Well, I mean, even UMKC.

SPEAKER_04

It's spread out, it's spread out appropriately. That's the difference.

SPEAKER_06

What was it a couple years ago? I mean, Orl Roberts had Abrams, right?

SPEAKER_04

No, they definitely didn't beat Ohio State in the tournament at any point. But no, the the conference schedule is balanced in regard to they're not coming back from Hawaii to play in four days. They got a week plus between the players there in Nebraska with that one game. It's just appropriately spaced out. It's a really good non-con. But it's not nine in a row. It's you get your few, you get one, you eat your few, you get one, you get a few days. Uh, we don't have to deal with Nebraska pantering to get their game early in November to Well, I love too is um the Big East is gonna be better.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

We gotta the conference has to get back to elite, you know, instead of being that like fringe power, let's be yeah, let's get six seven power. Yeah, let's let's get back to you know, a lot of people made fun of the big east and saying that's not a power.

SPEAKER_06

How dare them?

SPEAKER_01

Uh the we're not mid-major. Fuck yourself if you think that. Um, but we did have a down here. I'll give you that. I'll give you that. But let's go to predictions here.

SPEAKER_06

Let's go to predictions here.

SPEAKER_01

All right. Um, our good friend Peter Cunningham asked on uh Twitter or X if you want. Nah. Um He wanted our predictions for the 11 non-Con. Um what our record would be entering Big East play. What are the by games?

SPEAKER_02

Um Casey, UM KC Lemoyne, Oral Roberts, Nebraska, Mount St. Mary's. Nebraska. Easy, easy.

SPEAKER_04

You you got you got four buys, and then you got six. If you sweep the players area, you got a seventh. So you get ten if you think they're going three and oh in Vegas, you got eleven.

SPEAKER_06

Well, they never win in Vegas, so I won't do that.

SPEAKER_04

Well, I'll be credential out there. We'll see.

SPEAKER_01

You want me to go?

SPEAKER_02

2-0, 3-0, 3-0.

SPEAKER_01

All right. Don't say it out loud yet. Just do it in your head.

SPEAKER_00

Great prep.

SPEAKER_04

Great prep. Um, that's funny. I mean, I th I think the I assume uh should we just say how many losses do you think they'll have? Is that an easier way to do it?

SPEAKER_02

Eight and three.

SPEAKER_04

I was gonna say three and a half over and under on losses. Is that a good way to kind of judge this barometer?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, eight and three, I'm saying.

SPEAKER_04

So you take Iowa, you take Kansas State, you take Nebraska, you take the players era, you take Gonzaga.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_04

All of a sudden, three losses doesn't sound that bad.

SPEAKER_02

I know. But I love the fucking J's.

SPEAKER_04

I know I just condensed into five seconds of what we just ran through for 10 minutes, but I I'm comfortable taking over three and a half losses. With the biggest, um yeah, I was gonna say four might be a straight line, actually. Four or five might be the max. I'll go Vegas.

SPEAKER_01

Um if they finish better than seven and four, I'll paint my face on the first big East home game. Stop doing this. Alex is gonna kill us. I don't care. She will not buy any more telecoms. My body, my choice. Okay.

SPEAKER_04

Alex said she you're done.

SPEAKER_01

It's it's a done deal. If they do eight and three, I'll I'll paint. That's a good thing. That's a that's a very reasonable yeah, yeah, I like it. I mean eight and seven and four. I don't I don't have to. So yeah, so I'm taking the low road. And uh, it's not that I'm not a fan, I'm realistic. Eight and three, I'd be ecstatic. I mean, I eight and three. I might just want to paint my face in its own right.

SPEAKER_04

I guess we're gonna that third game of the players' era is kind of the unknown. You might get the Rutgers or whoever the fuck again, but just to stay consistent and be the Debbie Downer, I'll just take whatever are the more losses is that we've said. I don't know where we landed, four or five, whatever. But I'll say we lost several.

SPEAKER_01

I think that that's a good start. Even even seven and four, I would take going into it. Yeah. I think that's a good thing. Especially depending on where a win will come from. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

It's one of those where you you hope you just win the Kansas State game at least. Right. There's a lot of wins that teeter. That feels like that feels like a key swing game.

SPEAKER_06

I agree 100%. Like that is like that Kansas State game is a massive game for how non-conference goes. And then you lose that game, you're looking at if you're two and two like a two and two going into Vegas, like a five and six.

SPEAKER_04

If you're two and two going into Michigan, 500 in the big East play is not where you want to find yourself.

SPEAKER_01

So, but I would say I would take seven and four. Um and that's what I'm gonna go with. And if it's eight and three, you'll see me with a big old basketball on my fucking face again. It's gonna ruin another pillowcase. Sorry, Alex, I tried. Oh no, she's fine. She loves it. But I think I'm excited for this fucking season. That's all I gotta say.

SPEAKER_02

God, I'm excited. Right.

SPEAKER_01

Kevin Otter showed up. All right, fellas. That was great. Shout out to Christian. We miss you. Shout out to Christianity. But what a show. And what a season ahead of us as Creighton basketball returns with a new coach and a new team. It's a new era. Can I do a test?

SPEAKER_04

Joe, if you're still listed, fuck you.

SPEAKER_02

Um, also, hey, come to uh the Blue Jays at the B and I L night September 10th.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah. September 10th.

SPEAKER_02

Mark your calendars. We're gonna have a ton of fun shit and just come hang out, have some beers with everybody. Or meet us.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Come meet us and come meet some players. Come meet some old friends. I'm sure we'll have like Ryan Sears here. I whoa. I'll I get Ryan. You'll be here. You'll be here. Rodney Beaver. Oh, Kyle. Kyle.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, come and yeah, have some have some beers, and pretty much everything is gonna go to uh we're gonna have a fun night. Go to the Jays. So that's yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Come on down and have some fun. But we'll be back before that.

SPEAKER_06

And it's gonna be a live podcast. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So it'll be a great time.

SPEAKER_06

Get your questions in now.

SPEAKER_01

But hey, we'll see you next time.

unknown

Woo hoo hoo.
