Hearing God’s Voice in a Noisy World

Welcome to today’s episode, where we’re going to talk about something that so many of us struggle with—hearing God’s voice in the middle of all the noise.

Life is loud. Between work, kids, responsibilities, social media, emails, text messages, and the endless to-do lists, it often feels like there’s no quiet moment to pause and actually hear what God is saying.

Maybe you’ve found yourself wondering, Is God speaking to me? Or maybe you feel like no matter how much you pray, you just don’t hear anything. I want to encourage you today—God is always speaking. The question is, are we in a position to listen?

Today, we’re going to talk about how we can tune out distractions, quiet our hearts, and discern God’s voice in a world that never stops demanding our attention.

Why Is It So Hard to Hear God?

Life moves fast, and in today’s world, we are more distracted than ever.

Maybe you’re working a demanding job that requires so much of your energy, and by the time you get home, you’re exhausted. Maybe you’re a parent, constantly running your kids to activities, helping with homework, and trying to keep up with the never-ending mess at home. Or maybe the distractions come from your phone—scrolling social media, checking emails, and feeling mentally drained by the constant noise of the world.

With all of this going on, it’s no surprise that hearing God’s voice feels difficult. It’s not that He isn’t speaking—it’s that there’s so much noise competing for our attention that we don’t recognize His voice in the middle of it.

But here’s what we need to remember: God does not shout over the noise. He speaks in stillness.

In 1 Kings 19:11-12, the prophet Elijah was waiting to hear from God. A mighty wind came, then an earthquake, then a fire—but God was not in any of them. Then came a gentle whisper—and that was God’s voice.

God speaks in the quiet, but we have to be willing to slow down enough to listen.

Practical Ways to Discern God’s Guidance

So how do we tune out the distractions and actually hear what God is saying? Here are some practical ways to position yourself to listen.

1. Make Time for Stillness

One of the biggest reasons we struggle to hear God is that we never stop moving.

Psalm 46:10 says:

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

If we never slow down, we will always struggle to hear Him. Just like any conversation, if one person is constantly talking or distracted, they won’t hear what the other person is saying. The same is true in our relationship with God.

Practical step:

• Set aside at least 5-10 minutes of complete stillness every day. No phone, no music, no distractions—just silence before God.

It may feel awkward at first, but over time, you’ll start to notice how much more aware you become of God’s presence.

2. Learn to Recognize His Voice

Hearing God isn’t about waiting for a loud, dramatic moment. More often, God speaks in subtle ways—through Scripture, through an inner sense of peace, through the words of others, or even through circumstances.

John 10:27 says:

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”

Just like a child recognizes their parent’s voice because they hear it often, we learn to recognize God’s voice when we spend time with Him regularly.

Practical step:

• Start asking God specific questions in prayer, then write down what comes to your mind. Does a certain Bible verse pop up? Do you feel a nudge in a certain direction? Start tracking how God is speaking to you.

3. Limit the Noise

The world is full of noise—social media, news, notifications, entertainment. If we don’t take control of what we consume, the noise will drown out God’s voice.

Jesus often withdrew to quiet places to pray (Luke 5:16), and we need to do the same.

Practical step:

• Consider a “noise detox.” Take a break from social media, turn off unnecessary notifications, and be intentional about creating quiet moments throughout your day.

It’s not about shutting out the world completely—it’s about making sure God’s voice isn’t just one of many, but the loudest one in your life.

4. Stay Rooted in God’s Word

The primary way God speaks to us is through His Word. If we’re not regularly in Scripture, we are missing out on what He wants to say.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 tells us:

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

If you’re ever unsure whether something is from God, compare it to Scripture. God’s voice will never contradict His Word.

Practical step:

• Set a goal to read the Bible daily, even if it’s just one chapter or a few verses. The more we immerse ourselves in God’s Word, the more we recognize His voice.

5. Ask God for Clarity and Confirmation

Sometimes, we hear something and wonder, Is that really God, or is it just me?

God is not a God of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33), and when He speaks, He often confirms it through different means—scripture, wise counsel, circumstances, or even a deep sense of peace.

Practical step:

• If you feel God is leading you in a certain direction, ask Him for confirmation. Seek counsel from trusted believers, and see if it aligns with Scripture.

What Happens When God Feels Silent?

Maybe you’re in a season where you feel like you’re doing everything right—praying, reading the Bible, trying to be still—but you still don’t hear God.

Here’s what I want to remind you: God’s silence does not mean His absence.

Sometimes, God is teaching us to trust Him even when we don’t have clear answers. The teacher is often silent during the test.

Isaiah 30:21 says:

“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’”

If you are seeking God, He will guide you. It may not be in the way you expect, but He is never far.

Final Encouragement: God Wants to Speak to You

God desires a personal relationship with you. He wants you to hear His voice. But just like any relationship, we have to make time, remove distractions, and listen with expectation.

If you’ve been struggling to hear God, don’t be discouraged. Start small. Find those quiet moments. Read His Word. And trust that He is speaking—even when it’s a whisper.

Jeremiah 33:3 says:

“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”

God is ready to speak. The question is, are we making space to listen?

I hope today’s episode encouraged you to slow down, seek stillness, and listen for God’s voice in the midst of a busy world. If this message spoke to you, share it with a friend who might need the same encouragement.

Until next time, keep seeking, keep listening, and trust that God is speaking.
