In this episode, we’ll explore:
- The different ways God speaks
- How to distinguish His voice from all the noise
- Why spiritual maturity is key to hearing Him more clearly
- And practical steps to grow in your ability to recognize His leading
Let’s jump in.
📖 Segment 1: Does God Still Speak Today?
Let’s start with the foundational truth:
Yes—God still speaks.
From Genesis to Revelation, we see a God who communicates with His people—through creation, dreams, prophets, angels, and ultimately, through Jesus.
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” – John 10:27
Jesus didn’t say some sheep hear His voice. He said His sheep—all His followers—can hear Him and recognize His voice.
But the way He speaks may not always be how we expect. Most of us won’t hear an audible voice. God tends to speak in quieter, subtler ways that require faith, attention, and relationship.
📡 Segment 2: The 6 Primary Ways God Speaks
Let’s break down some of the most common ways God speaks to His people today:
1. Through His Word (The Bible)
This is the clearest and most consistent way God speaks. His Word is living and active (Hebrews 4:12), and it reveals His heart, His character, and His will.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…” – 2 Timothy 3:16
If you want to hear God speak—start by reading what He’s already said. He will often highlight verses that apply to your current situation, give you peace through a passage, or convict your heart through a line of Scripture.
2. Through the Holy Spirit
As believers, the Spirit of God lives in us. He guides, convicts, comforts, and teaches.
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit… will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” – John 14:26
Sometimes it’s a prompting. A nudge. A moment where you feel, I don’t know why, but I need to call that person or I shouldn’t go there.
The Holy Spirit speaks internally—but always in alignment with the Bible.
3. Through Prayer
Prayer is not just talking to God—it’s also listening. Often we rush through our words and forget to be still.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10
As you sit in silence, God can speak through thoughts, impressions, or a quiet sense of direction. The more you practice stillness, the more familiar His voice becomes.
4. Through Other Believers
God often uses people to speak into our lives—pastors, mentors, friends, even someone at church who says something they didn’t realize you needed to hear.
“Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” – Proverbs 11:14
Wise, godly counsel is one of the safest ways to discern God’s voice—especially when it confirms what you’ve been hearing.
5. Through Circumstances
God can close doors, open opportunities, or shift your situation to get your attention. This is sometimes called “providential guidance.”
“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” – Proverbs 16:9
While circumstances alone shouldn’t be your only guide, they can support what God is already speaking.
6. Through Creation and Conscience
Romans 1 tells us that God’s invisible qualities are seen in nature. A sunset. The ocean. The mountains. All of creation points back to the Creator.
And your conscience—your internal compass—is also a tool God uses, especially when it’s shaped by Scripture and the Holy Spirit.
🧠 Segment 3: How to Know It’s Really God
So how do we know if what we’re sensing is really God’s voice—or just our own thoughts?
Here are some filters to help you test it:
✅ 1. Does It Align With Scripture?
God will never contradict His Word. If what you’re sensing violates His commands or character, it’s not Him.
“God is not a God of confusion…” – 1 Corinthians 14:33
If it doesn’t match the Bible, throw it out.
✅ 2. Does It Draw You Closer to Christ?
The voice of God always leads you into deeper trust, holiness, and dependence on Jesus—not fear, guilt, or pride.
“The sheep follow Him, for they know His voice.” – John 10:4
God’s voice draws you in. The enemy’s voice pushes you away.
✅ 3. Is There Peace?
Even if the step is hard, God’s voice is accompanied by a deep, unshakable peace.
“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts…” – Colossians 3:15
If you feel agitated, anxious, or forced—it’s worth pausing.
✅ 4. Is It Confirmed?
Often, God confirms His voice through Scripture, wise counsel, and even repeated nudges. If you hear the same thing from multiple sources, pay attention.
🌱 Segment 4: Growing in Discernment Takes Time
Recognizing God’s voice is like learning to recognize a close friend’s voice over the phone. It takes time, relationship, and familiarity.
The more time you spend with God—through prayer, the Word, worship, silence—the easier it becomes to discern what He’s saying.
Think about Samuel in 1 Samuel 3. As a young boy, he hears God calling, but doesn’t recognize it. He keeps thinking it’s Eli, the priest.
Finally, Eli tells him to say:
“Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” – 1 Samuel 3:9
That’s a powerful posture. One that we should carry daily.
🧭 Segment 5: What If I Don’t Hear Anything?
What if you’re trying, praying, waiting—and God seems silent?
You’re not alone. Even great heroes of faith had seasons of silence.
- David cried out in the Psalms, “How long, O Lord, will You be silent?”
- Job begged for an answer in the middle of his suffering.
- Even Jesus experienced the silence of the Father on the cross.
Silence doesn’t mean absence. It might be:
- A test of faith
- A season of growth
- A call to deeper trust
During the silence:
- Keep showing up
- Keep obeying what you already know
- Keep your heart open
Sometimes God speaks the loudest through His absence, growing your faith in the waiting.
🔁 Segment 6: Practical Ways to Tune Your Ear to God’s Voice
If you want to recognize God’s voice more clearly, here are some daily rhythms to practice:
🔹 1. Daily Scripture Reading
Even 10–15 minutes a day builds familiarity with God’s tone, values, and truth.
Start with the Psalms, Proverbs, or the Gospels.
🔹 2. Quiet Listening Time
After prayer, take 5 minutes to sit in silence. Ask, “Lord, is there anything You want to say?” Then wait. You may be surprised what comes.
🔹 3. Journaling
Write down what you’re sensing in prayer or reading. Over time, you’ll see patterns and confirmations.
🔹 4. Ask for Confirmation
Don’t be afraid to pray, “Lord, if this is You, confirm it through Your Word, through peace, or through others.”
🔹 5. Stay Humble and Teachable
Sometimes we mishear or misinterpret. Stay open to correction. God honors humility.
💡 Segment 7: The Ultimate Goal—Knowing Him
Here’s the bottom line:
God’s voice is not about information—it’s about relationship.
He doesn’t just want to give you directions. He wants to walk with you. Speak to you. Be known by you.
Sometimes we want answers. God wants intimacy.
So instead of just asking, “What should I do?”
Also ask, “Who are You, Lord—and how can I know You more today?”
✨ Final Takeaways
Let’s recap:
- Yes, God still speaks. Through Scripture, the Holy Spirit, prayer, people, circumstances, and creation.
- His voice will always align with His Word, draw you closer to Jesus, and be marked by peace—not confusion.
- Discernment takes time, like tuning into a frequency. The more you walk with Him, the clearer His voice becomes.
- Silence doesn’t mean absence. Keep seeking. He honors the heart that listens.
- The voice of God is not just about guidance—it’s about relationship.
🙏 Closing Encouragement
If you’ve been longing to hear God’s voice—know this: He longs to speak to you even more.
He’s not far off. He’s not hiding.
He’s drawing you near. And as you keep showing up, He will meet you.
So today, pause. Get quiet. Open His Word.
And say from your heart:
“Speak, Lord—Your servant is listening.”
Because when you listen for the voice of God, you step into the life you were made for.
