Title: How Do We Know God’s Will for Our Lives?

“How do I know if this is God’s will?”
It’s one of the most asked—and most stressful—questions we face as believers. Whether you're making a big life decision or feeling stuck in your current season, it’s easy to wonder if you're on the right path.

In this episode of Made for More Ministries, we bring biblical clarity to a confusing topic by breaking down:

  • The 3 types of God’s will (sovereign, moral, personal)
  • Why His will is more about who you are than where you go
  • How God leads us practically—through His Word, His Spirit, people, and circumstances
  • What to do when you feel stuck or unsure
  • And why even our “wrong turns” can’t derail His plan

If you’ve ever feared missing God’s plan or wrestled with a big decision, this episode is for you.
đźŽ§ Listen in and discover how God’s will is less about perfection—and more about relationship.

Welcome back to Made for More Ministries, where we dive deep into real faith for real life. Today we’re tackling one of the most common and most personal questions Christians ask:

“How do I know God’s will for my life?”

Whether you're choosing a college, changing careers, considering marriage, moving cities, or simply trying to make sense of your current season—there’s a longing in our hearts to know, “God, what do You want me to do?”

And if we’re honest, sometimes God’s will can feel like a mystery. We wonder:

  • What if I make the wrong choice?

  • What if I miss His plan?

  • Why doesn’t He just tell me clearly?

In today’s episode, we’re going to unpack:

  • What the Bible says about God’s will

  • The difference between God’s sovereign, moral, and personal will

  • Practical ways to discern His guidance

  • What to do when you feel stuck or uncertain

Let’s clear the fog and step forward with confidence and peace.

📖 Segment 1: What Is “God’s Will,” Really?

When people talk about God’s will, they usually mean one of three things—each of which is rooted in Scripture:

1. God’s Sovereign Will

This refers to what God has already determined will happen. It’s His divine plan that unfolds regardless of human decisions.

“The Lord has established His throne in the heavens, and His kingdom rules over all.” — Psalm 103:19

No one can thwart God’s sovereign will. It includes history, prophecy, and major moves of God across time. You can’t miss it—because it’s not dependent on you.

2. God’s Moral Will

This is what God has clearly revealed in Scripture—His commandments, expectations, and standards for how we live.

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18

In other words, we already know part of God’s will: love your neighbor, walk in purity, be generous, forgive, tell the truth, honor Him with your life.

You don’t have to pray about whether to lie on your taxes. That’s already outside His will.

3. God’s Personal Will

This is what most people mean when they ask, “What’s God’s will for me?”
It’s about the specific direction for your life—who to marry, what job to take, where to live, what steps to take next.

This is where we often want a flashing sign from heaven, but God usually leads differently.

🔦 Segment 2: God’s Will Is More About
Who You Are Than What You Do

Here’s a truth that will give you peace:

God’s will is more about your character than your circumstances.

Sometimes we obsess over what choice to make, and God is focused on who we’re becoming in the process.

“For this is the will of God—your sanctification…” — 1 Thessalonians 4:3

God cares about you becoming more like Jesus. That means:

  • Growing in patience during waiting seasons

  • Learning to trust Him when the outcome is unclear

  • Honoring Him in every environment, not just the “perfect” one

If you’re seeking God, walking in obedience, and living surrendered—you’re already in the center of His will.

You’re not on a tightrope where one wrong move ruins the plan. You’re in a relationship. And relationships grow through trust.

🧭 Segment 3: How Does God Lead Us?

God may not give us a detailed blueprint for our future, but He doesn’t leave us clueless either. He uses several ways to guide His children:

1. His Word

God’s Word is our foundation. The Bible doesn’t answer every specific question, but it gives us principles to filter decisions through.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:105

The more you know God’s Word, the more clearly you’ll hear His voice.

2. His Spirit

If you’re a believer, you have the Holy Spirit living in you. He convicts, nudges, comforts, and guides.

“When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth…” — John 16:13

That unease in your spirit when something feels wrong? That peace when you step into the right place? Pay attention. The Holy Spirit often leads through impression more than instruction.

3. Wise Counsel

God often speaks through mature believers—pastors, mentors, parents, friends who know His Word and your heart.

“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” — Proverbs 15:22

If you’re unsure about a decision, ask: “What do godly people in my life think?”

4. Providential Circumstances

God can open and close doors. Not every opportunity is from Him—but sometimes, His will becomes clear through what He allows or blocks.

Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 16:9:

“A great door for effective work has opened to me…”

If everything seems to align, and you’re walking closely with God—move forward. But hold it all with open hands.

💡 Segment 4: What If You’re Stuck or Don’t Hear Anything?

What do you do when you’ve prayed, waited, and still don’t feel clear?

1. Go Back to What You Know

While you wait for the next step, be faithful in the last one. Obey the parts of God’s will that are clear:

  • Serve where you are

  • Stay in His Word

  • Love the people around you

  • Keep your heart clean

Waiting time isn’t wasted time. It’s often preparation.

2. Don’t Wait for 100% Certainty

Sometimes we expect a burning bush, but God gives us a “gentle whisper.” That’s enough.

God rarely shows us the whole path—He asks us to trust Him one step at a time.

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord…” — Psalm 37:23

Start moving. God often guides a moving person more than a stagnant one.

3. Check Your Motives

Sometimes our uncertainty is less about God’s silence and more about our own hesitation.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I afraid of the cost of obedience?

  • Am I hoping God says what I want to hear?

  • Am I willing to trust even if it’s not the easiest path?

God reveals His will to hearts that are surrendered, not just curious.

🚶 Segment 5: What If I Made the “Wrong” Decision?

This fear paralyzes a lot of people. We worry:

“What if I messed up God’s plan? What if I missed it?”

But here’s good news: God’s will is not that fragile.

God can reroute. He’s not surprised by your choices. He doesn’t throw His hands up and walk away. He works with our detours.

Think of Jonah. He ran the opposite direction, and God still got him to Nineveh.

Think of Peter. He denied Jesus three times, and Jesus still called him to lead the church.

“We know that in all things, God works for the good of those who love Him…” — Romans 8:28

You can’t ruin God’s sovereign plan with one bad move. His grace is bigger than that.

🔑 Segment 6: What Does a Life in God’s Will Look Like?

A life in God’s will is not necessarily flashy or famous—it’s faithful.

  • It’s walking closely with God.

  • It’s obeying Him even when it’s hard.

  • It’s choosing integrity over ease.

  • It’s trusting Him with your unknowns.

God’s will is less about the destination and more about the journey with Him.

If you focus on knowing God, you’ll find yourself doing His will.

✨ Final Takeaways

Let’s wrap up with some clarity:

  • God’s will includes His sovereign plan, His moral commands, and His personal direction.

  • It’s not about cracking a secret code—it’s about walking in daily relationship.

  • You don’t need a neon sign. You need a willing heart.

  • Don’t let fear of “missing it” keep you stuck. God is faithful to guide you.

So how do you know God’s will?

You walk with Him.
 You stay in His Word.
 You listen for His voice.
 You take steps of obedience.
And you trust that He is bigger than your uncertainty.

🙏 Closing Encouragement

If you’re in a season of decision-making, be encouraged. God isn’t playing hide and seek with His will. He wants you to know it more than you do.

And here’s the best part: Even if you feel unsure about the path ahead, you can be 100% sure about who walks it with you.

So keep your heart open. Keep your ears tuned to His voice. And keep moving forward—because the God who called you is faithful to lead you.

You were made for more—and He will show you the way.
