That’s the spark for a bigger story about how a local skate scene can turn a piece of Jacksonville skateboarding history into real support for someone facing major medical costs. We’re joined by Jake Shrickling calling in from Wyoming, the photographer behind the Mike Peterson pool shots featuring Aaron Mullen and Mike Peterson, and the reason our GoFundMe raffle is even possible.
We get into Jake’s roots, how he found skateboarding early, why Texas A and M shaped his mindset around helping others, and how that fed into his path as a photographer and creator. Then we rewind to the era of FTK Skate Mag, the free skate magazine that lived on shop counters and in backpacks, and talk about what it takes to build a publication, sell ads, chase content, and still keep it fun. We also shout out Look Back Library and why skate magazine archiving matters if we don’t want whole scenes to vanish.
From there, Jake breaks down working with World Industries on the East Coast, what it’s like trying to rep a brand in the real skate retail market, and we trade classic road stories and contest memories. We close with a fast “Is It A Sport” game and a little Wyoming life talk before we sign off.

Um, and uh aid in the recovery from his surgery as well as the uh the bills from that. Mike, I believe, had a broken pelvis. Um, longtime Kona local, Kona employee, super rad fucking guy.

SPEAKER_08Yeah, one of the best. Um his son rips on a skateboard as well. His wife is hella rad, and I believe she's a nurse. So uh needless to say, Mike is in good hands. Um shout out to everybody that is involved to make this happen. I know that doomsday rejects are headlining. Um, love that band. If you are into the uh the doom metal from the swamps of Florida, then this is the band for you. Come out and check them out. Um and uh I know I know I know there's gonna be an opener. I can't remember who it is, but I can uh tell you that we just got word from the show promoter, uh Chip, that uh he wants our guy, the doctor, Dak Jones, Dak Jones, to do uh do a few minutes of stand-up set. So uh we're stoked for that.
SPEAKER_06You know me, I support hips, man. I got I got a bad hip, it's bad pelvis, or you know, it's a whole shebangabang. So I gotta do what I can to support the homie and everything.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, for real. Um it should be a good one. I'm sure everything uh you got's gonna be hilarious. I know the music's gonna be off the chain and the uh the ambiance and the skate session will be uh um unmatched for sure. Um it's funny that you'll be doing stand-up uh when both you and Mike will most likely be sitting down.

SPEAKER_08Oh, yeah. But uh anyway, uh hope you guys will be able to come out. Once again, that's at uh Kona Skate Park. Doors open for that at uh 6 p.m. Um I believe the first band goes on somewhere around 7 or 7 30, and uh it'll get kicked from kicking from there. But uh yeah, man, without further ado, um hella stoked for our guest. We're on episode 39 now. Hard to believe. We are uh knocking him out, my guy. Um we had we had the homie Jake Shrickling on the phone from Wyoming, and uh we talked to him a little bit about uh his time as photo editor with uh FTK Skate Mag um when he worked with uh World Industries. Um and and just we're hella grateful because he is the man that's responsible for this amazing photo raffle that we have right now going on.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, man, I couldn't thank Jake enough, man. Like honestly, like it him coming out and just wanting to do that to help and support me, dude. Like words couldn't express, man. I'm just so thankful and grateful for him.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, he's a hella rad dude. And uh when we got to know him a little bit on the episode, he talked about going to uh college at Texas AM and them really instilling the uh that uh that need and that want uh to to you know kind of help others and uh serve a bigger purpose. But uh I think the guy's just uh genuinely 1,000% awesome human being at heart. Um stoked that his wife allowed him to uh carve out a little time right after his uh work day to uh talk on the phone for with with us. Unfortunately, it was cut a little bit short because uh my wife, Mrs. Walnuts, has uh been fighting off a cold and she has had worked a very long week and uh was on the way home, so didn't want to uh disrupt her when she got home.
SPEAKER_06But that's okay because Jake's coming back.
SPEAKER_08Oh, yeah. I uh heard he might be here in December, and we couldn't be more stoked for that. You know, we'll definitely have him on in person and uh for sure, dude.
SPEAKER_06I mean honestly, dude, like this the episode with Jake was so much fun, and then like to think that like we're gonna get him in person here in the upcoming months is just gonna be like, oh fuck yeah, dude. I know that one's gonna be like funner.

SPEAKER_03Thanks, guys. I I greatly appreciate it. I'm stoked to be on it. Um I have to say I'm big fans of you guys. I mean, what you guys are doing is awesome.
SPEAKER_08Well, we appreciate that, man, because uh we are big fans of yours. I gotta say, like yeah, FTK magazine, which we'll get into that in a little bit. I mean, just uh yeah, everything that you've been a part of and helped build in this uh town that we both call home over here. And uh yeah, it's been it's it it's it's awesome to have your support, and it's the people like you that that kind of respect is the respect that we truly care about and are searching for. So thank you because it validates what we're doing.
SPEAKER_03Well, I I I appreciate it. I I'm the humble one here, you know, that you guys, you know, just being on your guys' show is is humbling for me.
SPEAKER_08So So for those uh these young jitterbugs out there that uh that that don't know. I mean, when I was uh when we were you know in our days of skating, our days nuts. Yeah, your your your day your name floating around the area. Like I I we've never met personally, but like I always heard your name buzzing around, everybody that I skated with, like you were well known in in this local part, you know, industry. Um so man, tell us how, you know, tell tell all these young jitterbugs out here that don't know who you are, how you got into skateboarding, where you're from, you know, kind of kind of your backstory real quick. Let us uh let us know where you came from.
Skate Origins And Moving To Florida
SPEAKER_03Well, it it's it's kind of funny because um I mean I was I was originally born in Baltimore, Maryland. Um, but I wasn't there very long. Um my dad was in the enhanced oil and gas recovery business. I did a short stint in Wyoming for a couple years in elementary school, and then I moved to Texas. So I mean, honestly, I I call home Texas. Wow, oh cool. That's yeah, so I'm I'm a Texas boy, grew up in Texas. What part of Texas? College in Texas, East Texas, near Dallas.
SPEAKER_06Right. My grandma's right home around there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, uh, like a Tyler, Texas area.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I've never been to Texas, man, but that's uh it's a place I've wanted to go for some time.
SPEAKER_03Um you know, they used to have some pretty rad contests down there in Houston. You know, the make a wish contest um went to a couple times. I mean, that that was that was pretty rad, you know. I mean, um there's some rad skaters like Cody McIntyre that came out of Texas and uh I remember watching.
SPEAKER_08Oh yeah, for sure. And with all the embassy guys and everything like that, yeah. Texas skateboarding is live and thriving.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, it's outside in Houston and shit. It's crazy.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, yeah, oh yeah. They got that uh Houston Vert ramp and they got that contest that's going on, yeah. Yeah, fucking super rad. And just an interesting state, man.
SPEAKER_03I mean it it is, it is. I mean, I don't ever want to go back to Texas. I mean, to be honest with you, I'll go back to Texas for you know, like pro football games and college football games and stuff like that. Like I I'm never gonna live in Texas again. But uh No, I mean I'm like it's just uh I I skated when I was in the you know like when I was younger in the early 80s. Um, you know, and grew up watching the thrash you know, looking at the thrash magazines and you know, my first uh my first board was, you know, like I think a Nash skateboard. Rad. Um and this is yeah, and then the first real board I ever had was a uh Al Peralta for Wellender tracker trucks and OJ2C uh slime ball wheels on it. He's shooting up nice. Yeah, yeah. I still have that for Wellender deck too. Hell yeah, really?
SPEAKER_07Hell yeah.
SPEAKER_03And it had rails, it had rails on it, and it had uh all the you know, like all the stickered up and stuff, but it's hell yeah, pretty badass. Very cool, and it can crypt tape too. So you gotta hang it on the wall. Oh yeah, well, not now because we just moved, so it's packed somewhere. Um I got it. But uh yeah, I still have it. It had been hanging on my wall for years and years, so I mean you always kind of remember your first.
SPEAKER_08Oh yeah, for sure. Dude, I wish I still had my first board. Yeah, me too. I had a big stack for a long time in my parents' uh shed, but then it spontaneously combusted one day when it fired. My mom still blames me that like it went up so easy because I had stacks and stacks of like old and broken decks in there. I'm like, no, no, it's because you kept gallons of gasoline in a hot shed in Florida. Like right, right, yeah.
SPEAKER_03That's yeah, fuel fire. You know, it's not a good combination. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um, yeah, my mommy just threw mine away. So when did you I said my mommy just threw mine away, so uh you know oh man, we gotta you know hit you with that uh sad trombone here.
SPEAKER_08Chris has lived a rough life. Mom didn't get him the right wheel, she threw his decks away, you know. Hey, hey, when did you uh move to Florida then?
SPEAKER_03So you know, like I stopped skateboarding after elementary school because nobody skateboarded in Texas at the time.
SPEAKER_08Right, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um the death of the before the reverse. Basically. So I picked it back up when I was in college at Texas AM and um and used it basically to get across campus. Like I knew I knew how to skateboard. I never I'll be honest with you, dude. I never learned any flip tricks or anything like that. So I mean I can't claim being a you know like any any sort of talented skateboarder. But yeah, dude.
SPEAKER_08But skateboarding is bigger more than that.
SPEAKER_03But I was just exactly I was using it to get across campus. So after I graduated from Texas AM, I went to architecture school. Um I had tons of offers and I had got an offer to move to Florida to Jacksonville. So in in 1990, and then 98, 99 is when I moved to Jacksonville. So um that's how I ended up in in in Florida, and you know, I just loved it from the moment I got there.
SPEAKER_08So how did uh how did you get involved with FTK? How did that all go about in that history for the crew for the for the for the younglings out there and the ignorant that

SPEAKER_08don't know? FTK stands for foo for the crew.
SPEAKER_03Foo foo the crew foo the crew for the crew, man. It was such a rad magazine. I I gotta correct you on one thing. On the previous one, you called me the editor of FTK magazine. Yeah, weird. I was uh the editor was actually Tony Reddington, and that guy was an absolute genius.
SPEAKER_08Oh well, I apologize.
SPEAKER_03My last oh no, it's okay. My my final byline for FTK when I left, which was around 2008, my final byline was staff writer, um, East Coast ad sales, and and photo editor.
SPEAKER_08Okay, photo editor, that's what I remember hearing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But that's okay, because I mean basically the whole magazine was was Tony Redding. I mean, T Red was in everything. And so I helped him with you know acquiring content, helped him with um getting interviews, doing interviews, getting ad sales. I mean, so I mean basically there was you know FTK magazine, for those that don't know, was a it was an every other month magazine that was free. You could pick it up at Skate Shop. Oh, yeah, and it was a box of 50. Yep.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, no, it was so sick. I remember picking it up like I at Kona, dude. Dude, I I'd always get them from Kona. Bro, and and when you sent those two um issues with the photos, I mean, those were just looking through them. I mean, the the nostalgia hit so hard for me. Um, and then especially seeing all the people that were in there, and then you know, after I after I'd already pierced talking about it, dude. Yeah, then after I'd already looked through them, and then we got to unveil them to them, and then them looking through them and me being able to document that, I was I was like sitting there as a little kid, like, yeah, dude, I was feeling the same way just a week ago when I received it and I looked through it. Yeah, for sure. It was it was it. I appreciate that.
SPEAKER_03No worries, man. And actually the the funny the reason I sent those to you is because I was going through, we just moved, we moved from northern Wyoming to you know, the literally the southern, southern, east, southeast corner of Wyoming, umside of Denver.

SPEAKER_08Okay, that's what I was about to say. Where's that uh what are you like Cheyenne?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah, Cheyenne Mountains right now inside of Indians. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_03But it's the capital, it's the capital of Wyoming, the state of Wyoming, and it's like right outside of Denver. So I was going through all this stuff when I was putting those prints together, and I was getting a ton, just a shit ton of extra magazines that I had. Um, and I saw those and I was like, oh man, I gotta I gotta send this with those prints because that Jacksonville issue, I think that was the first issue that I was considered staff photographer. Nice. And the Joey and the Joey Corey issue is the first known magazine. Um the one with Joey Corey on the cover, I think, is a U.
SPEAKER_08Hell yeah.
SPEAKER_03But I had just had this conversation with the guys that run Look Back Library, um, which is an awesome organization, an awesome group of guys. Look back library archiving. Look back library, yeah. Um they uh they they just archive, they archive magazines, so they needed FTK magazines because they had like two or three issues, and I just sent them like 40. Um just archived. I mean, it's a big place in California. Probably the size of a skate shop, but they have every thrasher, every trans world. I mean, you know, they run on a volunteer basis. It's they'll sit they'll go into a skate shop, they'll set up um, you know, a library, you know, it's it's pretty rad thing that those guys are doing. So I was sending those magazines and I was like, oh no, I gotta pull those two issues out and send it to you guys just so you can have them for your archives.
SPEAKER_08Dude, so blessed, bro. Thank you very much, man. Um much appreciated. Um so yeah, so earlier, I know we kind of jumped a little forward, but we were talking about kind of kind of your history. You went to Texas AM?
SPEAKER_03I did. I went to Texas AM University. That was pretty wild. Crowd egg. Right? Yeah, it was. It really was.
SPEAKER_08Um you got any crazy, crazy college stories?
Texas A And M Traditions
SPEAKER_08I mean, that's like your your big college. I mean, especially now they're in the SEC, I can only imagine what it's like there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, the the there's a couple things that, yeah, I mean, it was a it was a pretty wild, uh, good old boy, you know, like country music. Friday night lights. Oh, uh hard partying, Friday night lights. I mean, football games are insane. Um, you know, and it's and people call it a cult, and it kind of I mean, it kind of feels like it sometimes, but it's it's more they always say that you can't for those who didn't go to Texas AM can't understand it, and for those who did can't explain it. Um it's just it's a very rich in tradition, um rich in history college, but it was it was pretty wild, especially being in architecture school, which you know, I mean, was you know, the the liberal group. I mean, we were the pot smokers, we were staying up late, we were heavy drinkers, we weren't you know, but like we weren't like kind of like the typical Aggie, I guess you should say.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, I mean, well, I mean arch architects for the most part, I mean, yeah, it's pretty creative and creatives uh tend to tend to be a little out there, you know what I mean? We gotta we gotta express ourselves, right? And explore what life is all about, you know? At least that's my excuse, right?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, or be And I remember being in a class and you used to have these studio classes. Um and uh and uh the professor was from Berkeley, and we literally it was like ten or eleven o'clock at night, you're working on a project, and uh um the prof is like, hey, you guys want to go smoke? We're like, hell yeah, and she like pulls out like six joints, and we all just stood out there, you know, like you're smoking a cigarette and just smoke a couple joints with your professor.
SPEAKER_08Hell yeah.
SPEAKER_03I mean, that's pretty fucking cool in my opinion.
SPEAKER_08That's pretty fucking cool in my opinion, too, bro. Yeah, no, that's dope. Shout out to that professor. Yeah, dude. Yeah, dude.
SPEAKER_03You know, that's not exactly, yeah. I mean, it's it's not exactly the norm.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, but but especially back then. I mean, I uh now uh the more that times progress, especially I mean, cannabis isn't like everybody's realizing that it's not high school, so I mean they can't really get you in trouble like that. Yeah, and everybody like I think is realizing that like reefer madness was propaganda.
SPEAKER_06Jake, I wanna I wanted to um say thank you because uh you reached out to one of your homies that was on the AMM uh football team and everything to actually donate to my cause and all that. And like that was that was pretty rad. Um what what Felton?
SPEAKER_03Felton Ransby, yeah. He was actually a cornerback for AM in uh late 80s.
SPEAKER_08Man, um fuck yeah, thank you. Shoutouts to Felton. Yeah, that yeah, that was crazy, dude.
SPEAKER_03Like he's a he's in a he's a badass golfer, diehard Aggie. Um it's it's when they talk about AM, you know, I mean it it's true. I mean, like it's a family more than anything, and I think that's probably where you know, I mean, that's where I get a lot of my uh um, you know, like my my feelings towards helping people and whatnot is because of the the what they instill in you at Texas AM. Everybody everybody's there to help everybody,
Photography Career And Sports Shoots
SPEAKER_03man. But that's also I mean, AM is also where I started my photography career. I mean, that's where I got my start.
SPEAKER_07Right.
SPEAKER_03Um you know, I was shooting um NCAA sports. Um I was working at a newspaper as a photographer um for two years, and then I spent a year as a photo editor as I was working my way through architecture school. I mean, I was you know, shooting for the newspapers. Yeah, no, dude, that's so tight. Yeah, so I got to go so I got to see a lot of games from the field, from you know, from the court, from from all the angles that we wish we could watch the games from.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah, from the tools we don't have the money for the tickets for, I got you.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, it kind of ruins it kind of ruins you for later on in life when you actually have to go sit in the stand. I can imagine, I can imagine.
SPEAKER_08So yeah, we're both big sports fans, so like yeah, we can definitely imagine how that might uh kind of spoil things for you after that.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, Jaguars got the Hall of Fame game tonight, actually.
SPEAKER_08So yeah, shout out to the Jags. Yeah, hopefully they uh they look competent. I think that's what everybody is hoping for. That they just look like a normal football team should be what should be doing. Yeah, yeah, hopefully. It's been a train wreck down here for football. I need to see that. Yeah, me too. I'm from Pittsburgh originally and I'm a I'm a diehard Steelers fan, but the Jags, you know, I I call Jacksonville home. They're my second team.
SPEAKER_06This son of a bitch said he's gonna wear a Jaguar shirt, but he had to bring up Pittsburgh right away. Yeah, I see what you did.

Let me ask you a little bit about uh your world industry time and then uh and all and all that kind of those years and what you uh had going on.
Working With World Industries East Coast
SPEAKER_03So that was that was later. That they came much later. Um that kind of came towards the end of uh when I was uh you know about 2007 or 2008. So I started I started shooting um and contributing to Mags, I got you know, probably 2003, 2004, thanks to Bo Crumb. Um shout outs. And then yeah, I'll give Bo a huge shout-out because he hooked me up with uh John Buchanan and uh and needed a sequence shot. And I don't, you know, Bo wasn't shooting photos anymore. And um and then uh we shot a sequence on the brick banks. Um I can't remember what it was. Oh, in downtown Jackson. Yeah, uh frontside nose pick uh 360 out, I think. What the fuck? Wow. Yeah, it's a sequence for yellow brand. Uh the yellow brand skateboards that was under yellow brand. Was that in FTK or no? That ran in that ran in skateboarder, I believe. Skateboarder and trans world, they ran that ad.
SPEAKER_06Oh I think I remember seeing that. And yeah, digging, like just seeing the photo of it. I don't think I ever seen the footage of it, but just seeing the photo of it to like 360 out of that, like what what the fuck?

SPEAKER_03So I got that, and then I started shooting um just a bunch of the area dudes for FTK and started doing all that stuff. So I got to know through FTK magazine, I got to know a lot of different people. Um and it came up that Dwendell had gotten rid of World Industry. They sold it off to some um some other snowboarding company called IE Distribution. And they were looking for they were looking for a uh a core skateboard rap, and they were looking for like East Coast brand manager um kind of thing. So I was I just threw my ring, and I've never never sold anything. I mean, to be honest with you, at that point. I had a few kinds of background in marketing. And so, yeah, so they they brought me in and interviewed me at like a surf expo, and then next thing you know, they're flying me out to California, and they just were like, Hey, we have everybody's based in California, you know, and it was all done in-house, and they had some outside sales reps because like I said, it it already broken away from Dwendle at this point.
SPEAKER_07Right.
SPEAKER_03Um thousand seven. Um you know, and they're like, We need somebody in East Coast Um just course shops. Um we'll give you a monthly salary plus commission. And I'm like, alright. They're like, oh, can you can you be we don't have a team manager, so when we go to Tampa Pro, can you act as team manager? I'm like, alright. You know, can you can you do this promotion or shoot photos of this guy for a magazine? I'm like, alright. And then it's like, oh, oh yeah, I'm supposed to sell shit too?
SPEAKER_06Oh shit. Oh, well that is the only worst thing I couldn't do.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, exactly. Oh, so I'm supposed to I'm supposed to sell shit. I'm horrible at selling shit. So I was the I I literally, no pun intended, and I guess pun intended, I was the world's worst rep. Nice literally I sold yeah, I sold to I sold a shit ton of Skate Lab. Um because you know you know, Brian Christensen was always down to support me, you know, I was his team manager at the time.
SPEAKER_07Right.
SPEAKER_03Um so he brought in a bunch of boards and he brought in and they started a shoeline, that was the other thing. Um I remember that, dude. Yeah. And it was and you know, so like I sold to a bunch of different shops.
SPEAKER_09But I mean it's kind of like what do you do on the lead a couple weeks?
SPEAKER_03I didn't know shit about uh skateboarding retail market whatsoever. But I mean I talked to some you know some rad dudes that um like Jason Roberson, who was the area rep for um DC shoes, and then I talked to Brad Oaks, who is the NHS rep, who is still one of the best reps in the world. Uh shout out to Brad Oaks out there in California. Yeah, um Colin uh Traverse, uh who was repping Colin at the time. Yeah. Um and so they try to give me a play, try to give me tips and like the playbook of how to do it. But and all I all I wanted to do was just like shoot photos, travel, tour, hook up my buddies with boards and shit like that, and collect a salary.
SPEAKER_08So honestly, I mean the same shit that we're trying to do, brother. Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, I mean, I do make some sales, but yeah, no, that's fucking awesome, bro.
SPEAKER_06As long as you're better than the worst, you know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_08Yep.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, exactly. So and you know what's funny, you know, it seemed fucked up because I sold ad space to world in FTK magazine. Oh god, yes, dude.

Contest Trips And Florida Skate Memories

SPEAKER_03And I promise you, so Paul, Paulie, it's surprising we don't know each other because you know, for a couple years I lived with Gus Cooper.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, yeah, it is really surprising.
SPEAKER_03One of my best friends, still one of my best friends. So there was a trip that Gus Cooper, myself, Jason Cologne, um, Spencer Lau and Brendan Yule, we all went to a damn Am in Minneapolis.
SPEAKER_08Nice.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Gus Cooper finished dead fucking last. Complete last. Completely just hammered drunk the whole time. So he probably does not remember this.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But Jake Duncan, when he was an am was at that contest. It was the contest in 2005 or 2006. Many Santiago won it. Damn. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, in and I mean the heads that were written there. So that was where I met Dustin Blauveld the first time. Um who ended up being a world am and then living with Gus and I for a summer watching his FTK um interview and all his thrasher ads and stuff that we'll do his dreams. Uh but I met Dustin the first time, like um Colin Pro Colin Provost was there, Karen Caples, Louis Lopez. Hell yeah. Um Jake Tuncombe was still AM. And then you wonder why Gus got left. Um he was with the Factor 54 team and some of the fallen guys and some of the consolidated guys, and was just hammered. It was it was awesome. I mean, but it was awesome. There was a run, speaking of Benihana's, there was a run that Jake Duncan did.
SPEAKER_06I knew this was coming.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Every freaking trick was a Benny Hana variation. That's awesome. Love it. Like Benny Hana, Benny Hana from the from the box to the down rail, and then like front boarded it, right? And then he did like a 360 Benny Hana over a pyramid, and then he did a uh a Benny Hana, you know, like backside flip hand finger flip, and you know, and he landed every single trick. Every trick was some Benny Hana variation as a I don't really give a fuck about this contest.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, no, that's like early.
SPEAKER_03After that, he went pro.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, like I love that. That's like the biggest fuck you to the establishment. It's like you guys don't fucking like him, watch every trick in my run and still crush it.
SPEAKER_09The crowd was going, the crowd was going though. Oh, I bet, dude.
SPEAKER_03The thing that I remember about that that contest was after after his after his run, he got interviewed by I don't know if it was Thrasher or 411, and they were like, How do you feel being the last man out? And Gus takes a big swig here and he goes, Yep.
SPEAKER_11It was the greatest interview. I talked to him about it not too long ago. He does not remember that.
SPEAKER_08I love that, dude. I'm gonna do my best to try to find that, dude. I gotta fucking track that down. Um, I need that as a drop, just uh yes, like I need that as a hot drop. How does it feel to be the last one out? Yep. Boom. I need that so bad. I'm gonna hit I'm gonna hit him up and be like, please tell me you have this footage somewhere. Does he? Do you know? Where can I find it?
SPEAKER_03I don't think he has it. He doesn't even remember doing that.
SPEAKER_08Man, that's fucking great. So yeah, yeah, I've had many of those times.
SPEAKER_03It was a great trip because I mean we shot a Minneapolis story uh for FTK, like Jason and Gus were both in that story. Like I took a took a bunch of heads out to shoot, then I didn't see Gus for like two days because he was just out partying, and then he finally came back, you know. So luckily he made his his flight back with us.
SPEAKER_07But nice, nice.
SPEAKER_03Excuse me. I'm just I'm just joking up thinking about it, dude. No, no, no, dude.
SPEAKER_08I tell you, dude, nostalgia in full effect, man. I love it. That's where we're we're trying to like keep keep this history that it seems like it, you know, would just get swept under the rug. Like we, yeah, I mean, we gotta each one teach one. These were great times and really important times in Florida skateboarding, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_03Oh, for sure, dude. I mean, that was the that was the greatest time anyway. I mean, if you think about it, look at the heads that were coming out of Florida then. Like the dudes that were just like doing it, like Joey, I mean, Joey Corey, um, you know, like Evan Marchell, uh, Evan Smith. Well, like, and I think I think that like on over.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, and even now, like the heads that are coming out of Florida, I mean, whether it was a direct correlation or not, those guys that have come before them have like, you know, in whether they they know it or not, they have influenced them because they've kept the torch burning. And like, oh yeah, we just had so many people that came down for SLS and they came to uh Bo's art show, and they were from like Atlanta and Miami and Palm Beach and Tampa, and like all these all these people were out, and I'm like greeting them at the door, and they're like, Man, this is amazing. Like, your scene here is like unlike anything. Uh it this is amazing. And I was like, fuck yes, we are doing something right. And it takes it's it's everybody that has come before us and and before them, you know what I mean? It's like we each just got to continue to carry the torch and you know, pat pass it on to the next one.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, I mean it's just it's just amazing. I mean, in that in that time period too, that uh was in the early 2000s to like uh you know by 2010. Uh um just a scheme.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, no, it was fucking progressive, very so progressive.

SPEAKER_08You know it, and we're back with the one and only Jake trickling. We got him on the line. Yes, sir. So we want to take mine. Yeah, we want to take this time. As we were uh going to break, we we talked about the raffle. And so being that you are the one that took the photos, we want to talk to you for a few minutes about like everything that session, like kind of how things went down as you remember them. Um, Mullen, I remember when we had him on uh when we were talking about the photos, he was always like, Man, I always had the best luck with Jake. It was like Jake would set up, he's like, I'd be battling forever, and then Jake would set up and it was like boom within a couple of tries. And he said that that was the case with his frontside flip. And he did confirm it's not a frontside heel flip, it's front side kick front side kick flip.
SPEAKER_06Uh I think you stuttered.
SPEAKER_08I did that. I just got a little cotton out. We stepped outside, we took a break.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's funny because when Mullen said that, I was I was sitting there listening to that episode, and I'm thinking, Mullen never took any time to make any tricks. Um, anytime I ever shot with Mullen, it was like it took longer to set the flashes up or whatnot, or get set up the shot or frame the shot than for Mullen to make the trick. So to hear that he was battling for six sessions, yeah, that's just that's fucking insane to me.
SPEAKER_08That's so fucking great, man. I I love it, and that's exactly why we are here for this.
SPEAKER_06You know, every time I've ever skated with Mullen, he's always been one of those dudes like bah bah bah bah he busted shit off. And then like when I heard him tell that shit, and he's like, But Jake was right there, and then it just happened right away, and I was like, none of Mullen, I I love you, brother. I've known you for a very, very long time. Mullen, you know I have.
SPEAKER_08But the thing is, we're talking to you. Jake can't see it, but we've got a camera going, so we're looking right into the camera and talking about it.
SPEAKER_06Right now, I have seen you do some shit first try, second try, to where I'm like, what the fuck? I think the hardest thing I've ever seen in battle was um at Monument was this uh front side 360k flip over the hip, like the hard hip, like right there by like the little step up that they have.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_06But yeah, he tried two times, and I was like, You can't fucking do that, dude. I bet you like a fucking bag of weed you can't do that. Fucking two times later he's rolling away.
SPEAKER_08I was like, fuck you, dude. But it just it happens like that, man, because I know there's like so many times I'll be battling tricks, you know? And then and then you just have that session and like the boys will be out. Like I've actually had that with Joey many times. Yeah. So uh so tell me your perspective, when you showed up, what time of day it was, kind of the whole vibe, and how it went down when you shot those uh soon-to-be iconic photos. They already are in my mind. I mean it might as well. They're gorgeous.
SPEAKER_10So we went down Penman. Gus and I had a house down. So we weren't that far out.
SPEAKER_08Hey, hey, are you a little far away from your phone? All of a sudden you sound a little dropped out. Oh, can you hear me now? Yeah, we got no no you're good. We got Jason.
SPEAKER_06Start over, please, if you don't mind.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no, I was I was saying that uh Gus and I had a house down Penman. So we were not that far from Mike Peterson's house. Oh yeah, right around the corner then. Yeah, summer right around the corner, yeah. So that summer that he drained it. Supposedly I thought that was the last summer that I was in Florida and and that was that was it. He was gonna skate it that summer and then he had to refinish it, and then it was never gonna be skated again. So we would drop in, we would just drop by anyway. Um we'd have people come through, people want to negotiate, or Peterson would hit up, you know, give guys for me a call and say, hey, you want to shoot photos, do you want to film? Because Gus had that uh uh 411 VM every week or month. It was called the Chronicles of Narnia. So he would film different skaters for that. He'd always be filming filming content. Nice. Um I don't I don't remember how we ended up there that day. Um but I know that there was like Mullen, and I want to say Johayah was there, uh Fink was there, uh Mike Barnes was there, Peterson, um I I thought it was Gus Willman, but I guess he said it was Marcus. And that makes sense for the crown video. Um you know, and honestly, Peterson was another one that was always, you know, like whenever he did everything, he did it perfectly the first time. Um all his thrasher ads, um all his you know, his consolidated ads or the ninja bearing ads with Spencer that I showed that's in the trick is actually in going going bananas. Um his first try. Um Spencer Spencer went backside over the door, Peterson went front side tail over top of the door. Yeah. Um and that was like a ninja bearing that, I think. Um Peterson was always easy to shoot, and and Mullen, in my opinion, was always easy to shoot. Now I've got some badass uh shots of George Evans that I might have to dust off in Peterson's full. Yeah, I know I've got a front feeble, um, a front feeble, I think. Okay, or I think broke ham, broke him around? Yeah, broke ham, broke ham. I don't I think he might have taken it around the corner. Thinking? Um I believe so. He might have taken the front feeble around the corner, or he just front feebled the whole length of that that uh the defense. But it was funny, they were talking about hammers, and the craziest, I mean, yeah, Johio and Kim were blasting airs out of that thing. Peterson blasting airs, Gerard blasting airs. I mean, Rard was destroying that when he came through. Um I remember when Chef Childress was there, but I believe he had Rhino with him, so I kind of stayed out of the way. Right, right. Chef Childress and Pathy, maybe. I kind of tried to stay out of Rhino's way. Um, you know, I respect the hell out of Rhino and any of those guys. I mean Fick. Ryan Fick, I was friends with casually. Ryan Clay, I was friends with casually, so I didn't give a shit if I got an array. Um you know, great photographers, you know. I mean, yeah, no rhino, but you're like, alright boys, you're you're you're the boys. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And they all helped me out. They all helped me out coming out too. So but um, yeah, so I mean I remember seeing some gnarly shit, but the gnarliest thing I ever saw go down in that that pool. Um Justin Blavat was living with Gus and I for summer. He was teaching ski camp. He's out of Detroit, Michigan. He was for world, he had a bunch of um he made it to the finals that year at the campaign. Um he was he was blown up at the time. Altering Ripper, I shot an FDK article for him, and then I shot a bunch I shot a thrasher and a trans world. Transworld check out thrasher ad in the in the thrasher head he was doing a blind thingy in Peterson's pool in the deep end, and I was at the bottom of like a massive vertical um in a skate lab for the shirt. He was on the world industry shoes kick, he was on world industry's boards and shoes at the time. Um but he did a blunt uh big spin in the deep end of the floor.

Um, unfortunately, you know, I I will say that it is talented, but unfortunately, I know so many people around here in Wyoming and they go naked and afraid. They're like, that's bullshit. That's elk season. They just forgot their clothes, those dumbasses. That is a sport. That is a sport.

SPEAKER_03You can you can die, you could definitely die. But this is this is just a normal Tuesday at elk camp for people in Wyoming.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, no, honestly, bro, like, dude, I'm I'm really fascinated. I I I've don't come from a family of hunters, man, but uh I just always grown up uh very fascinated with the outdoors and the natural world.
SPEAKER_06And man, naked and afraid of I will say this, you know, it's a television show on Discovery Channel and all that. But one of the main things you gotta understand is like they take normal ass people and just send them to crazy ass places. But the thing is what's up?
SPEAKER_03They're they're survivalists, they're true survivalists. These people made a career off of being survivalists. All right, you're talking to a naked and afraid super fan here, dude.

But no, Jake, I was gonna say, man, you living out there, you said you lived out there when you were younger, and then now you know obviously living out there currently. Man, I I uh I've always wanted to make it out there. It's definitely on my bucket list. The elk calling during like, you know, what is it, rutting season? Rudding season?

SPEAKER_03But for for years after I decided to, you know, I didn't I wasn't had no intentions of moving to Wyoming. I was I was heading to California because I had some opportunities to possibly shoot for some magazine as contributing and maybe get on a staff and just do something different, you know. I was just kind of getting tired. But I've visited Wyoming, you know, visited my parents who retired out here and just loved it and just ended up staying. So um for probably the first five years that I lived here, Mark Braddock was calling me Bearfucker. Mark Braddock made me went up for clothing. Um yeah, he would call me bearfucker, and then he turned around and moved to like the mountains of California.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, I was about to say, Yeah, yeah. He went out there for a while. Yeah, I was about to say I think he's back now, though, right? He's back now, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah, yeah. And so, yeah, that's probably right around the time. Super troopers came out with shit and everything. And we gotta get him on. Yeah, dude.

SPEAKER_08Bro, I feel you. Me and my wife, man, we love watching Gordon Ramsay fucking go in and tear people apart in their kitchens. Like it's just well, we we we love it. I don't know. I just I'm not a reality show guy. Yeah, I'm not a reality show guy at all. I'm not either. That's a weird thing about it. Yeah, but I'm like, she liked it, and then all of a sudden I'm like sucked in. I'm like, man, I fucking love Gordon Ramsay. I don't know.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, exactly. It's a weird shit, dude. We don't watch reality shows, you know, and it's like for some reason we got sucked into that naked afraid show, dude.
SPEAKER_06It's fucked up. I hear you, dude. I mean shit. I I enjoy naked afraid myself sometimes, but like I don't have a wife or a girlfriend or a woman that loves me. Um your mother. Well no, she bought you the wrong wheels. She doesn't love you. We gotta find my doctor. We gotta find the doctor. But my daughters and I, man, like what our thing is is like we watch impractical jokers. Like, that's our thing.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, no, and I watch well did we talk about that all the time. But I agree with you, Jake. We gotta watch, we gotta find you know, a woman for the doc.
