SPEAKER_05Yeah, I think it does uh one way or another. I mean, right? Yeah. But anyway, uh, thanks everybody for tuning in. Um, this is episode 51. But before we get into ado, as Joey Diaz does, and uh like, comment, subscribe. We'd greatly appreciate that. But yeah, for uh 51, um, had a guy come over uh that I've looked up to for a long time, local ripper. Um, known him since I was a jit, known him since I was uh inlining and skateboarding. That's how long I've known him, since uh basically middle school. The one and only Travis Ochab, Teo Ochabalero.
SPEAKER_04Good dude, good solid dude, man. It was it was a very interesting episode because he explained a lot of things that like I didn't know about back in the day, like you know, that he witnessed. So like that made me really, really stoked to be able to embrace that and like think about it like that way.
SPEAKER_05Hell yeah, hell yeah. No, man, and Travis was a fucking ripper dude, um, all terrain. But I mean, like if you saw him in a skate park, like he used to crush the Danny Way gap at Kona, which is like the uh concrete vert ramp you drop in there, and then you go down the sundial of the bowl and you like blast to the left of the tombstone out of the bowl into the uh second, some people say third turn of the snake run. And man, fucking epic gap. He used to blast that. He used to kill the vert ramp. I mean, I'm sure he still does rip, haven't skated with him in a long time, but man, it was glad to link up with him. Like I've literally known him since I've been like 12 or 13 years, since I moved to Jacksonville, really.

SPEAKER_05Travis was uh member of the legacy team. We've had uh Timmy on, um, and and um we're gonna be having Stokes on and Rick and uh hopefully the whole the as many of the crew as we can. Um so it was really, really rad to hear some stories. He brought over this, you know, back in the day, children, for those that don't know, we used to have scrapbooks before there was uh Instagram and all of that, uh all that jazz. Uh we had uh we had things called scrapbooks, and that's how we kept our memories. We would take photos and keep ticket stubs and you know put them in a scrapbook. So we brought over a scrapbook full of newspaper articles and I mean all sorts of shit. And we flipped through it, and that was, I mean, enough content that filled up an hour with the quickness. But uh you, my dude, were a little loopy on this one.
SPEAKER_04Oh man, you know what? I I gotta take responsibility for this one, dude. And I ate some uh a little bit of some chocolate mushies and uh yeah, that's I definitely sent it. Yeah, they've seen where it should have gone, but you know, that's that's on me.
SPEAKER_05But uh they kicked in a little bit a little bit a little bit sooner than uh anticipated, but no, yeah, it was still fun. But there was a few moments where I was like, bro, what what did what did you do, dog?
SPEAKER_04You know, I got lost in the sauce, dude, and like literally like after we were done, you're like, yo, dude, what the fuck was up? And I was like, uh I didn't tell you about this, but I was definitely in fucking plushies. Like, oh, okay, now it makes sense about certain things you're going on about. So yeah, no, that's my fault, but that's not gonna happen again. Um, I'm fully done recovering for my hip surgery, um, no longer on pain pills or anything, or muscle relaxes or anything like that. That was like the last weekend of like that. So, but no, other than that, man, yeah, I'm back in the game, baby.
SPEAKER_05That's right. And uh we are back in the game and stepping it back up. The reason why we've kind of been a little uh quiet over the past month, we've been working.
SPEAKER_04Are you gonna are you gonna you're gonna tell them right now?
SPEAKER_05I mean, we talked about it in the episode. We're not we're not fully officially announcing, but tentatively, June 7th for a 12-week run of the summer, we'll be doing live podcasts every Wednesday night at Kona Skate Park. Um, we're gonna get a get a band in there to have like a house band, house DJ, have a bunch of rad guests. It's gonna kind of be our um our version of like a late night TV show.
SPEAKER_04And man, I couldn't be more happier with this opportunity that we're given because obviously, like some people have noticed something in us that we didn't know we had it like in our in our wheelhouse, but like now it's like, oh heck yeah, dude, we're we're on. Let's get this.

Meet Travis And Early Skate Life
SPEAKER_05Chad. Appreciate it. Appreciate it. Yeah, welcome to the show, my dude. Um put a little sugar on top. Yeah, a little cherry at it. Yeah, so uh go ahead and start off. Uh tell everybody a little bit about yourself. Uh, you know, how old are you? What year you started skating, what was your first skateboard?
SPEAKER_04Wow. Was the time the parents left you alone because they knew you weren't stopping it?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, for real. Um right now I'm 43, pretty much grew up in Jacksonville my whole life. Oh, great bush. What's up? Yeah, buddy. Um starting skateboard probably was about four, five, six, maybe up in North Carolina. Hell yeah. You know, just like everybody else, the older guys in the neighborhood. Yep. Got on it, just ran with it. Um was your first board? First board was the um Skull and Crossbones. Sick. Hell yeah, the Mike McGill board. Hell yeah. That's word. Yeah, yeah. And what's funny is I actually got uh when they started doing the reissues not long ago, I bought one. It's the same color, same, same shape. Hell yeah. And it's uh I got it. I got it in my son's room. Hell yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you uh you got a young son. How old is he? What is he uh two?
SPEAKER_03No, man. Well he'll be five. Five? God damn. I know, right? It's crazy. He'll be five next month. Whoa, man.
SPEAKER_05I feel like I was just seeing you know pictures of him being born.
SPEAKER_03And it's crazy. He's he's at the stage now where it's like because we used to take him to uh sunshine and he'd go play in the playground with his mom and I'd go cruise around and he'd watch. Yeah, yeah. So uh like last Wednesday when I went to Willie's. He came? No, well, he's getting to the point now. I was there. I was there. Yeah, he was there. I got a phone call. It was I thought it was the wife. I picked it up, it's him. He goes, I want to I want to go skate. Heck yeah. So it's like, you know, I gotta get him some shoes and then we'll be we'll be on it.
SPEAKER_05Get them going, dude. That's what's up, man. Yeah, like I think the best way to do it is just kind of expose them to it and let them kind of you know either gain their own interest. You know, I've I've known some some dads who have tried to force their kids, whether it's play ball because they played ball or skate or surf because they played surfing. Yeah, you just gotta expose them to what you love, and they're either gonna love it or they're not. But you know, it's awesome when they do.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I got them to pads and I just gotta get them a good helmet and we'll we'll be on it.
SPEAKER_05Be rolling. Yeah, that's what's up, man. No, I'm I'm stoked you brought over this uh this scrapbook of old photos over the years, man. So we got some old pictures from Kona. I mean, when you're a young kid here, how old are you? Probably like eight? I don't know, yeah. Yeah, something like that. Like what I said earlier when I first opened it, I said, man, the colors of the paint on the concrete are bright right there.
SPEAKER_03It looks like brand new paint, but of course back then it's probably been open probably 15 years by now. Yeah, for sure. But I can see right here in this one, the pit wall, no cracks right there.
SPEAKER_05Oh, that that's when it was just cherry. Yeah, I remember skating that thing even when I was a teenager, and it was like you could man, I see kids roll up it now with the big old crack in the seam, and I'm like, oh uh one thing I'll do on it now is just kick turn. Yeah, me too. Uh I mean I used to do you know, rock fakes, front rocks, I mean, you know, axle stalls up on it. Now there's barely any coping up on it. That pool coping was gnarly though. Really gnarly, like big, very bonky. Um shit's so gay though. Hey, so uh you're goofy footed, right? No, I'm regular. Regular? Okay. I'm goofy. You're goofy, okay. All right. Um, front side or backside if you had to choose. Front side. Front side, that's my guy. Switch or faky? Fakey, fakey, all right. So that coming to be real honest with you. Well, we've we've argued that it's an age thing, but some people prove us wrong. We've had a couple old guys come on and be like, no, switch all day.
SPEAKER_04But I feel like you know we really have gone to the ringer with it.
SPEAKER_03So I'm more of a faky dude just because I like I I I think that more this the uh the switch people are kind of more the street kind of go towards the street. Right. And me growing up, I was more just ramps, park, vert. Yeah, for sure. So I kind of just do the whole fakey same thing, go fast.

SPEAKER_05Yeah. Um and obviously you kind of just said this. I always ask uh street, park, or both, but you know.
SPEAKER_03Um both. I mean, I kind of figure ATV.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I was about to say, uh, you know, when I think about you, I always think of kind of all terrain because there was never a session when it was going down that I didn't see in there, whether it was fucking street or I try to get I mean I try to dabble in the street a little bit here and there. Swine out of the bowl. Like, I mean shit. I remember back in the day stacking, seeing the trash can stacked, and even before I started about that. Even before I started skateboarding when I was just a little jit inline skating, I was doing flyouts over the trash can. Then I turn around and I look, and it was like you and like Carl Landon, like fucking rolling in and just landon could could blast. Oh he I remember seeing him do like a backside melon three over three over over the the separation, dude. So crazy. But yeah, now flipping through this scrapbook of memories. Um there's a lot of fish. Actually, boy. Here's uh here's a fly out of the bowl right here. Yes, I am wearing.
SPEAKER_04I'm wearing Barney shoes, but you know, no nobody's acknowledging it. But I'll just say because I I remembered the day.
SPEAKER_05Um yeah, and then we got the skate asylum vert ramp in here. That thing, that thing was so tight. Yeah, we've talked a lot about skate asylum and like how much we've lost, but we have yet to really bring up the vert ramp. Yo, you got any like memories from any rad sessions going down on that?
SPEAKER_04Uh any uh rich people that want to donate to the to the cause, we will open another skate asylum.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, right. We almost had one, but the city kind of turned it down. Yeah. It's because the white man. Let's not get started on that. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05We could go on a tangent.
SPEAKER_03I'm trying to remember, there was a tour who came through here, and I want to say it was Bird House? No. A lot of time it was it actually was McGill that actually. Oh, so it was like a Powell, probably? It probably was. Advance, but stopped there, and I just so happened to be there one day. Oh, sick. I had a couple runs with him on it, but it was maybe like a 10-minute just cruise around thing. Hell yeah. Just as I think he just stopped in, cruised around, left.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, no, that that vert ramp was tight. That that park was fun, man. Dominion ramp was fun. So fun.
SPEAKER_03Stuff that went down that shit.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Fun. And then that they had that big long banister. That was like back in the day when it was like still popular, probably because rollerblading was so popular at the time, but remember, it seemed like so many parks had ledges with round rails on the ledges. You don't you like never see that anymore. What, Chris? I know you're laughing because I've brought up inline skating twice. It's just the era, okay? That's where I had my uh the owners of skate asylum were their kids were inline skates.
SPEAKER_03They they brought up, yeah. Their kids were.
SPEAKER_04Um I was just gonna tell you that you're a full queef like diaper. Full cleaf diaper. All right, I I can accept that.
SPEAKER_03I got nothing else better, man. Jesus Christ. That's where I got that's where I brought my first bone. Really? What was it? Your wrist? Yeah. Yeah, that's what it's a crazy story. I'm after because you remember on this the street side, they had the the quarter pipe, the fly rent to bank. Yeah. And on the side of that, you had just like that small banister that went over. Yeah, yeah. So I tried to just, you know, come with the quarter pipe and the board side down it, and I just got flown to the ground. I still had a wrist card on it. I got up and I was like, oh shit. So I'm still young, so I'm like balling. And I remember at that time, Bucks walking in. Oh, nice.
SPEAKER_05He's a shout out, Bucksmith.
SPEAKER_03He's like, Travis, what's wrong, man? I'm like, dude, look at my look at my wrist. He goes, No lie, dude. Pop
Parenting And Letting Kids Choose
SPEAKER_03that shit back in, let's go. And I'm like, dude.
SPEAKER_05Hell yeah. Buck is gnarly. Buck's the man, the myth legend. Yes, sir. Yes, he is. Well, he's got he's he's got an up-and-comer going for it. So let me ask you this uh favorite skater growing up. Or you can you can name a couple. I mean, obviously it's hard to name one.
SPEAKER_04Uh more than five. No more than five. Local? Um, local? No, no. Yeah, go local. No, I mean you can go local, but you can also listen to your heart.

SPEAKER_05I mean, and then if you just watch his skateboarding, it's just like as a kid, I this was like a hard knot for my jaw to drop. I mean, just the the speed, he'd skate anything. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_03Do you remember back in his trucks were so loose? If you went up for a rock fake or anything, it would seriously they would just trucks would rock.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and that was before like both sides of the board and shit, but that was that was before like the trend of nowadays.
SPEAKER_05Like a lot of the kids won't even rock top bushings, they'll just rock a bottom bushing in a wall. Like they they rock them ridiculously loose. But no, for sure. I remember seeing him with super loose trucks before it was like the trend. You know, before the saying loose trucks save lives.
SPEAKER_03There's I mean, there's so many just people just growing up favorites, it's so hard.
SPEAKER_05Oh, I know. So many influences over the years.
SPEAKER_03Especially growing up in here with everybody who's made it out of Jacksonville. A lot of people, a lot of people can't make no money in this goddamn city. Yeah, right? That's why everybody ends up moving out.
SPEAKER_05But a lot of them come back. Shout out to Neil Mims. Mims is back.
SPEAKER_03I was now I was about to bring him up. He had nowhere to go, dude. He had to come back. No, I mean, he had that park. He did the park for a while. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_04No, he did a skate academy test. The skate economy.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, resident park. But no, but Neil's always been a good dude. Oh, for yeah, I don't know him personally. And he's doing this the Florida skateboard club. Is that what it is? Yeah, I saw him post something about that, which I think is pretty rad.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I mean, he comes back and he's just staying activated in it. You know what I mean? It's awesome.
SPEAKER_03Start starting everything back up in Jacksonville, you know? Yep, dude.
SPEAKER_05No, I I reached out to him and I was like, man, I can see you're busy. Congrats on moving back to home. I was like, I've got this podcast one day in the future. Would love to chop it up with you if you got time. So hopefully we can make that happen. I'm looking at this picture here with you and uh old Timmy Time. Oh, I look good. The over-under on the old mini ramp, man. That was my favorite mini ramp. Really? I loved that thing. It's probably because I learned everything on it.
SPEAKER_03No, my favorite was the blue one. It was the six-foot-tall mini ramp. It was a spine. Yeah, that's this one right here. No, let me see. No. What's that's not the Kona spine? That is a spine, but that's not the one with the um that one has the extension on one side with the pull coping. No, the one I'm talking about was a straight blue steel. How can you not tell? And it had a spine ramp, and on the other side was just pull coping on the other side, had platforms on each side of the spine. Okay. But it was set back on one on the main side with an extension set back and went up to what it was. I remember the extension set up. I don't remember the blast. So you could blast off the side of the mini ramp straight up to the extension.
SPEAKER_04I'm being honest with you, I don't know what the fuck you were talking about, but it sounds cool.
SPEAKER_03It was the best mini ramp and it was I texted Marty not long ago because I asked him what he was doing upstairs, and he said he was building a sponsor. I'm like, you need to build this ramp again. Hell yeah.
SPEAKER_05Merritt Island. So uh let me ask you this. Uh, who was your first sponsor?
SPEAKER_04Don't lie, we'll find out. I am B D, not a problem. I want to say Crown. Hell yeah. Was it K or the C? C. Under Dougie or the person that owned it before?

Scrapbook Time Travel At Kona
SPEAKER_05Chris Kendall first, Kevin Graber, second, Anthony Briones third. I went to high school, graduated with Anthony, Joey Corey, fourth, Paul Vaughn, fifth, Eric Veltry, sixth, Bo Crumb, seventh, Travis, eighth. I don't know Davin, and I don't know Jay, who came in ninth and tenth. But that's crazy because that top eight right there list is like my fucking childhood, like my teenagers, you know.
SPEAKER_03The top one's pretty sick, too.

SPEAKER_04With anything that happens in life, it's always about yourself and how you're gonna take it and then respond to it. Sure, you can get mad and you get upset, but honestly, like what's the point of it? It's still a situation that's just gonna be sometimes we don't have control over. And that was philosophy with uh Dr.
SPEAKER_05Jones. So buy my book, bitch. Yo, this is crazy. This big old Benny Honda the fakie. That was yeah, that was on the old Kona KBC deck. Wow, Tim. Yeah, this is great, man. That's a story for you there.
SPEAKER_03I was about to say seven shots of uh we uh that was when we were with um Ropher Kona. That was that that Winter Fresh Gum series, yeah, yeah. And I don't know, do you remember the the little kid uh Evan Marchel? Oh, definitely remember Evan. Okay, yeah. So Evan was a little small ripper, and uh it was definitely no Evan. Yeah, we we took uh we took the motor home out west to uh Grand Prairie for this Winter Fresh Gum series. And I don't know, and his dad came with us from Yeah, his dad was rat and his dad wasn't and his dad had Some strength. He was a little, he wasn't small. Yeah. And so on the on the bus, you know, you're on you're on the the tour, but not tour bus, but motorhome. Everybody gets a little cranky with each other. Yeah, dude. Evan just started annoying the hell out of Tim. Yeah. And Tim's like, I'm gonna stick his head in the toilet. So I hold the door, Tim, Tim grabs him, sticks his head to the toilet, and his dad's just furious. He's like, I'm gonna get y'all assholes. So there's one. So we I think we get to Texas, we stop, and they're unloading all the uh sewage out of the motorhome. And Tim's doing it, and his dad sneaks up on him. And they're wrestling, trying to throw each other in the fucking shitter. Oh my god. So the night, so then we go skate the night of the contest after we skate, we're sitting out by the motorhome by the hotel, and we're just drinking. And then they got bets on who's gonna pass out first, me or Tim. Because they're trying to just feed me and Tim. Yeah, yeah. Tim goes to the in the motorhome. Next thing you know, no, no, no. His dad walks in with the clippers, and you just hear him go, Tim, you just hear you weren't there. I was there, but Tim wakes up swinging. Oh yeah? Like, did he just do the middle of the head or what? Oh, he's right here. Yeah. So Tim wakes up swinging. He um he cut his hair, and so there I am. I'm sitting here, I'm like, all right, my shit's coming next. So finally I pass out. And you know, I've always had short hair.
SPEAKER_05You've always liked rock the shave head, so what was he gonna do there?
SPEAKER_03But he got me in the back and I woke up in the middle doing it. Son of a bitch got a bowling ball for his head type. So uh, and the crazy thing, the next day we were going to uh Six Flags over Houston, and Tim already shaved his head. I rocked my shit with a patch the whole way, the whole time until we got back to Jacksonville. Hell yeah. But I couldn't even go on any rides because that day of the contest I fell on my tailbone. Oh, yeah, and like one one ass cheek was just like so tall, so bruised. You know, because the hospital they gave me morphine for that.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Bro, that shit is the tailbone injury sucks. Oh that shit can fuck you up for days.
SPEAKER_03But then yeah, we did that. So Tim beat me out the last Tim beat me out there, and then me and him, they flew us up to uh uh downtown Manhattan for this contest. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Which they put us right up a double tree, like right across from NTV Studios. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_05So and this is like TRL era, yeah, no, definitely.
SPEAKER_03So, like I said, they picked us up in the the motor uh the limo, as you see, there took us to the hot the skate park, the van skate park just across the line of New Jersey. That's sick. That's not a real place. And so when they brought us back, so when he brought us back, it was funny because you know you're strolling up in a stretched Hummer limo to the hotel downtown Manhattan. Everybody's no lie, everybody's stopped seeing who's getting out of this thing, and it's like 1520 square.

Yeah, so they've kind of got that going on, and uh they're working with Castle, California, which is you know my mom was she was cool because she would take me every month to a different skateboard park in Florida to do this.

I won't even sesh anymore because these kids nowadays are so so progressive, it's gnarly.
SPEAKER_05It's crazy. And they're getting they're getting started younger and younger when they've got a low center of gravity, and so like once they get the the basics, it's like I mean, it's just the sky's the limit.

It's a different you could definitely if you go to a session or something, you can tell if somebody grew up skating Jacksonville, Florida. For sure. Just because every like if you grew up skating Kono, yeah, as rough it is, and you go somewhere else to in session and especially a sketchy park, the locals there will be like, how do you skate this? I'm like, dude.
SPEAKER_05That's what Timmy was saying when we had him on. Was like, you know, when he first went out west, and all the guys were like, How are you like just crushing all this big concrete? He was like, Everything's too perfect back home at Jacksonville, DD, even our street skaters can bomb concrete.
SPEAKER_03And it's scared to skate, it's scary to skate perfect concrete. Yeah, right? I know. Because if you go up to the it doesn't feel right, it doesn't. It doesn't get you're like, this should not feel this. No, because you can't feel the coping. You can't feel yeah, you can't, yeah, you're really on and you're off. I like the janky shit.

Okay, and we would always like me, Tim, Eric, Rick, we'd always go and it was a deathmat on this six-foot mini, like a 40-foot-wide, six-foot mini-air, and Stokes would be there too. But you know, uh Big Tony, yeah, uh Benji, Ben Andrews. Hell yeah. So definitely the old school hardcore skateboard guys, or yeah, the construction dudes who can go and skate and go down to 12 pack and come right back and skate like nothing happened. Yeah. But this deat match is probably one of the funniest contests I've ever done. Hell yeah. Because you'd be on this, you'd be on this vert ramp, and here I am at the time, probably 130, 140 pounds, and here comes here comes Big Tony, aka 240, yeah, coming across the middle. And like, and then my you know, my dad at first he was like not really he was supportive, but it was like I don't know, there was a time where we kind of butted heads about it because I was fucking up and I quit doing all the other stuff because I was focused on skateboarding. So, you know, like some parents aren't supportive of it, uh you know, I don't know. I think I think it kind of helps give it the worldwide acceptance. But you know, for us that kind of had to fight.

Because when I grew up, I grew up um because when we moved back here, we lived in Ponta Vidra, and Danny and Matt Cass is in my neighborhood. So we would go, we'd skate all the time. Hell yeah. And then all of a sudden they moved to Iowa, and then the next thing you know, you see him in Olympic snowboarding.

What uh what year did he say that was? He said 96. So 96? Wow. Uh flip back to that picture, the gr uh the gray one, the ad. It was in the beginning. It was in the front, yeah. Stokes is doing uh backside smith on the ledge downtown, which is now a I think something with the fire department. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03Yeah, we're good. And then um, yeah, and then we got lucky with Venton from 187. Like, because as good as he's doing, shout out to Venton 187, man. I love him. Hell yeah, big shout outs to that. He's uh because that started in St. Augustine. I know a lot of people don't know him. He started in his mom, I think his mom's garage. Hell yeah. And they had a mini ramp in the backyard. We'd go skate, and um, we got some. I think Rick still has the very first uh duffel bag that uh Venton made. That's sick.
SPEAKER_05No, I remember when they first started popping up, and then all of a sudden I remember seeing like all the heavy mini ramp sessions and vert sessions at at like Kona. Everybody started showing up with these 187 pads on, and they were like blue or red, and like it was just like that was a time of like Pro Design and like all that were out. Yeah, I mean they're good, they're really, really good pads. The best, yeah. That's all I'd use when I when I pad up. Um they are they are the industry standard now, which is fucking awesome. Everybody rocks them.
SPEAKER_04Everybody has them. Yeah, a ball cup and I got a dick cut.
SPEAKER_03But yeah, man, them legacy trips were fun, man. Where where all did you go? Um Marit Island, we went there a lot, and then uh we had one back in uh up to Charleston with this contest like with the original skate mafia. It was Puerto Rico, yeah. And uh, I think Tim brought that one up about the original skate mafia contest up at Charleston. That was a fun one. That was normal, and uh that's where I knocked myself out.
SPEAKER_04Really? You know what, dude? I did see that footage actually, because Tim showed me back when he was like out there with y'all, and like he was just like, dude, my homeboy just breaks himself off.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I uh dude. I love skating vert, but I don't know what it is. You're you were in the deep end, correct? No, this is on a vert ramp. Oh, okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Different, different video then.
SPEAKER_03I have I I can do stuff on Vert, but I have the hardest time just doing the easiest backside air. Yeah. And this time, I don't I don't know what I did. Well, I know what I did, but when I did the backside. I don't know why it is. Yeah, it's supposed to be the easiest trick, but it's like but I did a backside air and I landed it, but my body kept going, turning. So I fell on my whole side and I hit my head with the helmet on, ended up with a fucking knot here. The biggest bruise I've ever had on my whole hip. So the funniest part, coming back from uh Charleston, we're in Rick's Cavalier. I'm in the back seat laying on my side the whole time, my opposite side the whole time. And that bruise was there for like three weeks, three months. Damn. Damn. Went there. Um Charleston's got a hell of a scene. Oh yeah, hell yeah. I remember skating the the original hanger ball when it was a park. That was sick. My uh my aunt and cousins lived in Charleston, and my mom would when we go and visit them, she dropped me off there. Hell yeah. So you had the original big ball connected as a spine to the small one. You see footage, you see people blasting out of the big one into the little one, yeah. And it's hell yeah.
SPEAKER_05So uh where where else did you guys go?
SPEAKER_03America. All over America up there, Merritt Island. Uh we did a strip down to Miami. That was pretty fun.

SPEAKER_04No, I mean I'm not in carnage San Diego, but uh what I'm trying to Wow You remember that game show?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, where in the world was carved San Diego, yeah. Actually, I'm a I'm a I don't even know. It was some little it was some park in like a strip. It was an indoor park, and we I don't even don't I don't even know that where it was so the name of it.
SPEAKER_04It's a shopping mall and there's a park in it. It was all right. So uh if you were to like recall the name of it, uh it wouldn't possibly be down in Orlando. It was Miami. Who gives a shit?
SPEAKER_05Um I remember there's uh I I've I've I mean I don't I don't think I've ever actually been down to Miami to skate. I've got a lot of family growing up to live down there, but I don't recall ever going down there to skate. I do want to go down there now to skate lot 11.
SPEAKER_03I was about to bring that up. Yeah, that park's gnarly. Yeah, hopefully with them because they're building that one here underneath the underneath the road side.

Janky Concrete Pride And Park Debates
SPEAKER_03They got the bowls in lot 11. Apparently, they're not building any bowls here.
SPEAKER_05Right, and I'm okay with that. I'm I'm personally, even though I like skating bowls and I'm and I'm more predominantly a transition skater, I'm okay, I'm okay with it because that it's what they have designed. Right now, as long as you're building something, it's getting slowed up with a bunch of people you know having discourse over the fact that there's no you know bowls there. And so now it's like there's people on social media that's getting tracked, like, oh, the skaters aren't happy, and now this and that's like why can't y'all just shut the fuck up? Go to the park where the bulls are, we've got other ones. Like, we don't want to not get this park just because they think we can't agree.
SPEAKER_03Like, and and I'm not trying to hate, but I'm not trying to hate, but it's probably a lot of younger guys, younger kids that are doing that, that are upcoming up little shredders that want man. I mean, that's how I ain't gonna lie. When I was younger, I'd go someplace and be like, oh man, it's just rails. Yeah, it's just stairs. Oh, for sure.
SPEAKER_05You know, and it's probably that's how it is now, but also go to some places too where we take it, where it's like, oh, this whole place is like overly steep, tranny, like for like BMX and shit like that. You know what I mean? It's like so it's like, yeah, I get that, but I'm just like, man, we have multiple parks around town. Yeah, you know what I mean? We have multiple parks. Bro, covered. What is it?

SPEAKER_03So anyway, um But I mean, we almost I mean, we almost had an indoor park, but it's you know, the city took that one away with their original block, yeah. Well, and then now they're giving us this one, so just take it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that's you know, basically it's covered, protected from the rain. It's a place, it's like, yo, yeah, I predominantly like in my you know, late 30s, I go skate mini ramps and I skate flat bars. Like, I would not be of upset to pull up to a place when it's raining and only be able to skate a few flat bars and rails. I would be stoked. Yeah, you know what I mean? It's better than nothing.
SPEAKER_03Exactly.
SPEAKER_05You know, and so whoever is out there being unhappy, it's like, you know, that these are the same people that will complain about Jack's Beach because they'll be like, you know, because there's a little of everything. It's like these, in my opinion, are the type of people that no matter what you do, they're gonna find something to complain about. Yeah. And I'm like, they just need to shut the fuck up. Let's get this awesome park built.
SPEAKER_03Because I've heard people complain about Jack's Beach a lot. I'm like, dude, really? Yeah. I'm like, you got a bowl, you got a little flow course, you got you got different sections.
SPEAKER_05And it was like a decade and a half of people trying to get a park in Jack's Beach. Yeah, and then we finally get one, and then there's people like talk shit on it. I'm like, I don't go skate there often because it's so far away from my life, you know, from where I work and where I live.
SPEAKER_04That park is just too perfect, like we were talking about earlier, but like also on top of that, like getting like a French roll-up door, just everything you do is just you look at it.
SPEAKER_05Well, it's the new concrete, you know what I mean. I remember when Treaty first opened, Treaty, I I remember riding that and being like, man, this concrete is so smooth. Because I'd been used to riding like Kona, and the only places I knew that had smooth concrete like that was like skate asylum, skateboard house, or like skate world, where the the ground was really smooth concrete indoors. I mean, that's over time it's gonna get weathered.
SPEAKER_03Now Kona has their free kind of redone.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, dude. Have you ridden it since they I helped I've I helped Marty do it. Yeah, sick. I was not able to do it.
SPEAKER_03First time I got on it, I was like, holy shit.

That was fun, uh yeah, but then I remember seeing Rodney Meade come flying around the free and uh eat shit going into the bowl because of the drop off. He was just going so much faster than he thought. And that'd say he was like, Yeah, dude, it's flying now. If you've ridden the free before and done the whole free to bowl, you know, kind of stay away from the mogul. Oh, stay away from the mogul.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I don't care how much experience you got, stay away from that little thing.
SPEAKER_05Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_03So many people's eating it on that thing, uh, especially me. Yep, no, I've eaten it a bunch of. Yeah, that forty fifth anniversary is the first time the wife has uh experienced the whole skateboard industry party scene. Oh, cool. What'd she think? She was she she digged it because uh she watched uh well, we both sat down and watched the biography of Hosoy. Oh, so I had her kind of get into that. Yeah, yeah. And um we watched uh I can't damn it was the other movie.
SPEAKER_04Is it the Mark Gator one?
SPEAKER_03No, the uh Powell documentary. We watched that one. That was a really good one, too. Yeah, yeah. So she was stoked to see Hosoy. Hell yeah. So when we got there, you know, she pictures Hussoy, and then she was stoked with Cav. Watched watched the uh watch your theme playing. Your thing playing was awesome. Yeah, she was stoked, you know, she was happy to see all that.
SPEAKER_05Hell yeah, that's cool. Yeah, it's it's definitely a cool thing they got going up there right now. Marty's got the whole, you know, the indoor stage, and he's got the uh the the bands playing on the weekends. It's really kind of activated a cool uh scene with the young kids. Like I see a lot more of them like concrete sessions are going down, bands are playing inside, and it's like freestyle, the barricade right there. People are flying out of the bowl. It's kind of reminiscent of uh back in the day when you know before there was a yeah, me and Rick went up there uh a couple weeks ago and we didn't know there was a show, and the guy was like it's 15 bucks, like what? Yeah, and then you know, like sorry, I wasn't working. I would have had your back.
SPEAKER_03Oh no, no. I'm working tonight, actually. Marty walked by and like, no, yeah, these guys are good. Yeah, so I was like, I probably just would have walked back and went to my side door, but yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_05Yeah, we got we got live shows coming up this summer. We're going to be every Wednesday night from 7 to 9:30 at Cone Skate Park. We're gonna have a house band, we're gonna play some games, have a bunch of cool guests. A lot more details to drop, and we're gonna be streaming live on like YouTube and all that stuff. Um in the band room there, kind of like so inside, not outside.

SPEAKER_04Um honestly, like with this situation, it's like, oh man, we're the lucky like some bitches on the side of the like Mississippi River.

We're gonna get some some streaming cameras and it's set up to stream live and shit like that. So people that aren't coming can tune in on YouTube and you got your good little thing going on here, man. Appreciate it, appreciate it. Yeah, so we're very stoked. When I first started doing it, I was like, man, it'd be cool if one day I could get to a point where I'm like doing a cool live event kind of thing. And so being able to take that next uh step is gonna be rad. I actually want to kind of host a trivia night, but like trivia what? Skateboarding trivia. Oh, it's not gonna work like that. Like there would be certain categories, like there would be normal trivia categories, yeah, but every week there would be a skateboarding category.
SPEAKER_04Yes, really have to do like a cover studio, like no, no carm San Diego, calm down.
SPEAKER_03So how would how would this go down? Would you just have a couple people on the show, like three or four people, and then like just do it then?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, basically have like uh do a short kind of like live show, like at the beginning, like maybe you know, like a 35-minute kind of chop it up conversation, and then go into like kind of hosting a cool trivia so we could kind of broadcast a live thing and then have like a fun thing for people that show out for the live event.
SPEAKER_03Loser has to do one of the hot chips or some shit. There you go. There you go. I like it. I like it. I like it.
SPEAKER_05I'm not saying I'm doing it, but yeah, with my acid reflux, that would fuck me up. But uh no, I figured like the skate categories could be cool and unique because like it could be like grabs.

SPEAKER_03I couldn't I couldn't skate because like that uh like the two weeks before that I burnt my wrist. Oh shit. Yeah, I went up there one morning with uh to meet up a buck and Donnie, and they were training down the snake to slalom. Yeah, it was so random. That last turn, that wall, very first run down a snake. Damn. Somehow, somehow I just ate it. And I fell. I get up, I'm like, my wrist feels weird. And so I go back up top, and we're like, oh that's just swole, you know. So I start so I start rolling, rolling some more again, and later that night. I woke up next day, it's just like fush.
SPEAKER_05I don't know. Yeah, that was actually Donnie. Uh he that in the pool. Did you see that? I was I was like right there on the deck. I turned around for something. I was essentially facing it, but I had just turned around and then I heard everybody, and right as I turned around, Donnie was in the bottom of the pool. I'd like to jump down there and it was bad. And he yeah, yeah, big old gash. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Big old gash. Yeah, and he definitely when he was we were first talking to him, he definitely was uh seeing Tweety Birds.
SPEAKER_03Oh, dude, it was gnarly. Yeah, yeah, because it because I I ended up having to get two plates into six
Slams Surgery And Getting Back Up
SPEAKER_03screws. Damn, I see the scar there. Yeah, yeah. He I mean, the funny he he wanted I didn't have to have surgery, but he's like the inside from the x-ray, the inside of your wrist was so jacked. He's like all the mirrors of not going to the doctor and eating shit. Because he was like, he's looking at it, he's like, All right, you broke it here, here, here. He's like, What about right here? I said, I have no idea.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, he's like, I don't know.
SPEAKER_03You probably broke it and didn't know. I'm like, probably.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that's how it'll be, that's how it goes down. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04But um 7,000 months worth of unpaid hospital bills. You're gonna be just like me for a simple fee of $29.99 a month.
SPEAKER_05There you go. Yeah, yeah. No, I uh every time I have to go to the doctor and get x rays, it's kind of pretty similar. It's like he's like, when did you break your, you know, these ribs? It's like I didn't. He's like, oh no, you did. You know, it's like I I've been pretty lucky though.
SPEAKER_03Like just my wrist and then my ankle, I got um, I broke that. I was with Peterson and Burard. Oh yeah. They had to pick me up out of. The four foot ball.
SPEAKER_05Fuck. I uh my worst break was when I broke my leg and uh I had a Tib Fib spiral fracture, and like when I looked down, like my foot, my big toe was like almost pointing behind me. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That was like this was when I was still inline skating and skateboarding, and I was doing a 540 air, and I fucking under rotated, and I my left foot was the first one to plant on the tranny, and my rest of my body kept spinning.
SPEAKER_03Well, that was like my my when I did my ankle. We're just warming up indoors at uh skatehouse, brother San Jose. And uh Masonite bowl inside. So I went to do a backside disaster, and like you said, your body was turning. Yeah. I did back, I kept turning, I landed sitting on my ankle. Oh and and the the and the doctor said most of the times when you break your ankle, it breaks out. Mine broke in. Oh. So it was like a bruise, dude. So the funny thing was just a bruise. Peterson Peterson and uh Kyle Burard, I drove to the skate park. They drove me to the hospital where my mom was waiting. They took my car back to the skate park. And went skating. I was like, dude, why you go back skate? Just drop the car off tomorrow.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, so I remember when that leg break I was talking about, Marty carried me. This was the old street course on top of the snake run, the hip. Oh, doing a 540 air over that hip. And uh he carried me down, made a little splint out of some like old skate magazines, duct tape, and shit like that. Puts me in the back of my mom's Ford Tourist station wagon. My mom gave the house key off her keychain to like the person that was gonna go take my brother home or whatever. On the back of on that same keychain, she didn't realize, was the key to open the the fucking tailgate of the car that she put me in. So not only did I have the worst ride of my life, feeling every bump with a twisted, mangled, broken leg there. I get there and they gotta carry me up through the fucking and out the side. See, like it was horrendous, my friend. Yeah, horrendous.
SPEAKER_04I want extra mayo.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, no, it was horrendous. And uh that one plagued me for a long time. Yeah, but another one, I was actually street skating downtown with some some buddies, and I kneed a ledge, and I ended up breaking my patella, like fracturing my right kneecap, and they didn't believe me. And I'm like, I fucking was like in so much pain, I'm limp and I'm having to use my skateboard like as a as a fucking cane, get into the car. I get to the car, I'm like in pain the whole way there. By the time I get home, I had to like cut my jeans off because my knee was so swollen, and then like my friends are looking at me like, oh shit, we didn't think it was that bad. Like, I'm not trying to tell you, motherfuckers.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and I was like, Hey, somebody, click on my bone, dude.
SPEAKER_03The wor the worst my knees been was I I uh I was getting divert and went in. I landed so hard on it, I ended up getting fluid in it. Damn. So, you know, and that drained? Yeah, oh yeah. But I mean that was like it was fine though, because right after they drain it, you can move it. So it was like, but for the day and a half, I couldn't bend it at all.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Because it was so fucking so tight.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Like a few of like my injuries that I got and everything, like uh it was really throughout contests and all that kind of stuff. Like I was down in Tampa and I was going down the bank to like the uh like rolling, and as I was doing that, somebody's like board hit me in like the middle of my board and just like tossed out and like cart like cartwheeled out of it. But it like you know, I had to get reconstruct like reconstructive like surgery like that. But like, you know, like my face and all that shit, everything I've done, like man, I'd much rather have bad teeth. That's why you got like yeah, no, I feel you there.
SPEAKER_05I uh I can I gotta say, I've been knock on wood, I've still been skating, it's been a little while since I've uh had a serious injury. Um, don't worry, Dad, because you're about to buy me some new braces. Yeah, no. Um fine, you you actually right before he got diagnosed with his bone disease, he actually broke his ankle. It's like broke his ankle, came back from breaking his ankle, and then uh couldn't skate because of his bone disease. Oh, great. Yep, life getting old sucks, right?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's been three years. But um I don't remember God to think.
SPEAKER_05So after uh Legacy, were there any other sponsors or anything like that?
SPEAKER_03Um I think Legacy turned into the whole Kona thing with me and Tim. And I think it was like Oh shit.
SPEAKER_05I remember the dog.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I'm like, what the hell? Like I was like, um, and then it was um Sector 9 flow for a little bit. Oh, hell yeah. And then that's when I tore my ankle apart, so then that kind of just you know, that kind of disappeared. But um, shout out to them, they're cool dudes.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, for sure. Um them and those grabby guys. I remember when like Jesse Parker and like Yancy Meyer were hanging out a bunch. Yancy was like hooking me up with that's why I skated like the 36-inch popsicle shape like he used to skate, because he was hooking me up with fucking boards that it was like summer that he was.
SPEAKER_03You know, the whole Sector I squad. Oh, I also I actually met them through Peterson because they were part of Millennium and like what was that? That whole squad.
SPEAKER_04Wheelbase to wheelbase, like what was the number in between like 145? I caught or was it like 15 or 16?
SPEAKER_05No, it was like yeah, it was like 16 or so. I mean, it was a 36 inch from nose to nose. If a normal board is 31 and a half or 32 inches, I mean I would probably the skill the the wheelbase was probably I I mean I I like to skate like closer to a 15-inch wheelbase now on my board anyway. I mean, that was probably like a fucking 18-inch wheelbase, to be honest with you, bro. Like it was it was I mean, it was a big board. I mean it was but it was a popsicle shape. No, no, it's actually I could probably look it up.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, let me take that back. They weren't part of Lennium. I don't know why that popped in my head the whole exact nine of Lenni's club. No, they weren't okay.
