Um talked a lot about, you know, dropped some west side names, you know what I mean? Um from from some heavy hitters over the years and uh gave props and homage to them. So we got uh It's a goddamn surprise. It's a goddamn crown skateboards reunion. We got none other than uh Jason Cologne and of course the homie Aaron Mullen. SPEAKER_00Hi everyone. This is uh Jake Strickling, and the interview you're about to listen to is with one of my uh favorite skaters, Jason Cologne. Um I think you're really gonna enjoy this because I think he's an amazing person.
Jason’s Puerto Rico Roots
SPEAKER_08Tell us a little bit about yourself. How old are you, where you're from originally, and uh how long you've been skateboarding?
SPEAKER_09Shit. I'm originally from Puerto Rico, from Fajaldo, the east coast of the island. Hell yeah. Um I moved to the US to Jacksonville when I was about I think 10. Word. Uh been on the west side ever since. Um I initially started skating when I was probably uh officially officially around 13, but around like 10, 11, I went to Puerto Rico and my cousin was skating, and uh I kind of picked it up there and then brought it back. Hell yeah. Got bored, and it was on ever since.
SPEAKER_08Hell yeah. What uh what brought your family to uh to Jacksonville? Uh I know we got a big port.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, was that shipping? No, my mom uh got married. Oh, cool. And uh yeah, we just moved over here. Hell yeah. Yep. What year was that? That was I think it was late 98 or like early 99. Right on. I was six years old.
SPEAKER_08That's like right about the time that I moved here as well. That's kind of crazy. I was about to graduate high school.
SPEAKER_05Oh yeah. I'm in third grade trying to figure out the world, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_08Yes, and Dave Libhart, who we just had on last week, he moved here in like 98-ish, too. That's that's that is weird. Yeah, kind of kinda cool, kinda cool.
SPEAKER_07Um that's escape gods bringing everybody together. That's right. That's right.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, we gotta start doing tally marks on that on that year now, Paul. Right.
SPEAKER_08Um so I mean, you kind of first seen it in Puerto Rico when you went back there to visit your cousin. Had you seen it prior around there before, you know?
SPEAKER_09Yeah, we we messed around with Boers because there's a lot of hills and stuff. We used to just sit down and like bomb the hills and stuff as like a little kid, but nothing ever serious until like I actually uh came back and it was my birthday, and I went to Boer City and I got a complete for my birthday. Hell yeah. Um, and yeah, it was on ever since then, like nonstop. Hell yeah. 34 now and still try to stay on. That's right.
SPEAKER_08Um are you uh regular or goofy? I'm goofy. Right on.
SPEAKER_05What the fuck I'm talking about. God damn it, dude. It's about time we got a goofy footer. No, no. Oh yeah, we regularly I swear to god, the last 12 guests we've had has all been regular footers. Yeah, you were heavily outnumbered uh uh last week. They fucking beat me up and stole my wallet.

SPEAKER_09I'm a facility inspector. I do like risk management. Oh, cool. Yeah. So is that through like an independent company or uh for a nonprofit.
SPEAKER_08Oh, very cool. Very cool. Um kick flip or heel flip, my dude. Kickflip.

SPEAKER_08He's got a nasty kickflip. Oh yeah. No, I've skated with uh with Jason before. I think the first time I met you was out at Rick Morgan's. Yep. Um, one of the either SummerSlam events or just when they were sessioning out there. Yeah. Um, and I was like, who the f this guy fucking rips?
SPEAKER_07Who is this guy? Where did he come from? They're like, oh, that's Jason. Dude, we got a good Rick Morgan story with Jason. Yeah.
SPEAKER_09Oh God. Oh shit.

Tornado Trip And Contest Chaos
SPEAKER_07This involves Jake Strickling as well. He was there for this one. Hell yeah. Weren't we went down to Pensacola to skate a contest at that X park, right? Yep, yep, yep, yep. Mini ramp contest, mini ramp contest. Street contest, too. Street contest, too. We were all camping out at Rick's house out, and a tornado came through, right? You guys had were in the car with Jake, and we were in the R the Kona RV, right? Nah, nah.
SPEAKER_09No, we we rode out there with Jake in the van, and uh um it was a wild night, got pretty hectic. Um beers were drank.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05There's a bunch of adult pops.
SPEAKER_07He was young too, he wasn't really partying much at that time. So he was kind of getting it was like his first or second trip with like all of us. We were breaking him in, you know, and like showing him the ropes. Tim had this beat called The Who. Nice. Tim still calls Jason the Who from time to time. They got him pretty good. But it was a hell of a night. And that was uh we rode the storm out, it was good times, dude. Hell yeah. He killed it in the contest, too.
SPEAKER_09I actually um I still got the trophy at home. I got first place on the mini ramp contest. Uh it still got puke residue on it. Uh that that night, uh I almost got left in Alabama because uh Jake was like uh upset about everything because I ended up puking on his brand new camera on accident. I couldn't get the window open, so instead of going towards the window, I went the other way. Oh man. And uh yeah, thank God like my good homie uh Justin was with me and my other homie that I don't talk too much now. But you remember um what was his name? Uh he's out in Cali now. Uh dang. I forgot his name. But hell yeah, but they looked out for you. Yeah, yeah. So, but yeah, good experience. Yeah, it's it's dude.
SPEAKER_07We had crawfish battles. Remember we were doing like a low boil where like had live crawfish, we were like sumo wrestling them like battlefire. Whatever matches you throw them in the boiling water.
SPEAKER_09They had a cooler. You remember the cooler full of rattlesnakes? Like out there, yeah, a cooler with rattlesnakes and like For what? I have no idea.
SPEAKER_04Can you elaborate, dude?
SPEAKER_08Well, I don't feel like that's a whole I need to know more. Now, now you gotta you know it's a Caucasian occasion when there's a cooler full of rattlesnakes. Because sometimes you go into the deep south and you you you find those Pentecostal churches. Those are the dudes that like will dance with the rattlesnakes. Well dance with rattlesnakes and like speak in tongues. And they think that if they get bit by the rattlesnake, whatever, then then they got sin in them or something. It's like the fact that they can dance with them and blah blah blah. Their spirit is that pure. Exactly. Some weird thing like that. Yeah. YouTube, religious, religious crackers dancing with rattlesnakes.
SPEAKER_05Crackers and snakes. They don't know what you mean. Yeah, for sure, for sure. Occasion, occasion, dude. That's too good.
SPEAKER_09It was definitely a wild night. Like we were like his place was in the middle of nowhere. It's like pitch black, and they had this mound of like wood, and you remember like the bonfire like lit this place up, and it was like it was it was wild. You're like, I'm a long way from Puerto Rico.
SPEAKER_07Oh, Fox tried to drop in on the bonfire. Yeah, we got footage of that. They put a piece of plywood, like the fire was huge, and then they just like lapped the brand like a whole nother sheet, like a you know, a big button. It kind of covers it for a little bit.
SPEAKER_06And he's like, I think we could drop in on that.
SPEAKER_05God damn right we can with that attitude. Hell yeah.
SPEAKER_08Oh my lord, yeah. Fucking skateboarders. We are a special breed. The crazy thing about this story is that political rattlesnakes.
SPEAKER_05I feel like we're ignoring that part still. Go ahead, I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_09I went with all the crown guys, right? And I didn't really know who uh Rick was at all. Like even that night, I said what's up or whatever, but and like years and years went by, and I was skating Tim's house uh in Georgia, the St. Mary's uh ramp. Yeah, yeah. And I start talking to this guy and blah blah blah blah, and I come to find out that that was his place and it was Rick, and I was like, what the hell?
SPEAKER_07That's just wild. Fucking wild. Yeah, that's good how skateboarding always comes back. You always run into him again somewhere.
SPEAKER_08Oh yeah, for sure, for sure. Um if you had to choose street, park, or both.
SPEAKER_09Uh all around. I like I actually I like skating vert. I just I've seen you.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, I've seen that.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, but uh yeah, I'm a I grew up skating street. Like I liked ramps coming up at first, but all of my homies skated ledges and like really, really street. So I kind of just I was on that for a long time.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, and now when you get a little bit older, falling on trannies, once you learn, you know what I mean? It's a little bit easier than every time you fucking eat it on a ledge or you roll that ankle fucking, you know, trying to do a line, it's like fuck.
SPEAKER_05As you go from lip to flat, dude, that one's not not the move.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, going back to what you're saying about all your homies from that side of town being like super gnarly tech ledge skaters, which is a fact, you did have like a good balance of kind of like both, you know, like a little bit of a little bit of air on the ramps. You could haul ass. You were always, I guess that goes from buttboarding down hills in Puerto Rico at the time. Your first introduction was just speed. Yeah, yes.
SPEAKER_08Hell yeah, that's what's up. So, like that was kind of what the kids did down there growing up. Yep.
SPEAKER_07Fuck yeah. Dude, shout out, dude. Talk about some of the homies, dude, like Pat Schaeffer and oh yeah, like those dudes are such ledged technicians, dude.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, the Pat and Unreal, David Jordan. Isn't Pat out in Cali now? Saying, no, I think he's actually back in town.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay, cool. He and David played Monopoly against each other.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, I gotta give a shout out to uh Lance Katz. He was kind of like the dude that put me on Board City. He kind of saw me skating at Kona one day, and we linked up. And Lou, Lieutenant.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, Lou. Yo, I was just talking about him the other day. Um, because I remember there was a Kona contest, and he just fucking tore it down. Best trick. Everybody was skating like the rail and the step up on the one side, but he just kept going from the deck over the bank all the way to flat. I think he like front side flipped it, and then like I just I remember I was like, had never heard of that kid's name, and he's got a very memorable name. Yeah, but I just remember was like, who the fuck is this kid with this wild name just coming out of nowhere throwing hammers?
SPEAKER_09Yep, they were a little older than me, so like I looked up to them when I was coming up, like the Boer City crew was like, yeah, they were ripping back then.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, and shout out to Lance, my wife actually, like, I think high school years kind of grew up. That she does. What did you say?
SPEAKER_03Okay, what the fuck?

Videos, Influences, And Early Sponsors
SPEAKER_08growing up? Shit, growing up. I mean, it's kind of hard to name one, you know what I mean? Like, you can name a couple. Who was who was back in the day the video parts that you were really keying in on? Being like, that's who I want to skate like.
SPEAKER_09I don't know, man. I wasn't really like too much into uh a lot of videos or anything like that coming up.
SPEAKER_07Um what was like the first video that you remember like getting stoked on?
SPEAKER_09The first video uh the PJ Ladd's wonderful horror life, I think it's called.
SPEAKER_07Oh yeah, that one. Hell yeah. Um dude. Yeah, that got me super stoked on skating. He did every trick then again.
SPEAKER_05He did every trick. Every trick, dude, and a line too.
SPEAKER_09Yeah. Yeah, I was blown away by by that type of skating back then.
SPEAKER_08Like Hell yeah. Um who are you feeling now nowadays? I mean, it's kind of hard to put your finger on one, especially. We've talked about social media and all the insta clips you get all the time. I mean, is there anybody now that really sticks out to you who you've enjoyed?
SPEAKER_09Like the pros, like Ishan or iShot? Like he's just kind of like an all-terrain. Like, I that's the kind of skating I like, not just kind of limited, like I like all around type of skating. Don't ever want to put yourself in a box. Yeah, but there there's many of them. They're they're you know.
SPEAKER_08Oh yeah, for sure, for sure. I could, you know, list so many. So um you were talking about Board City, was that like your first sponsor?
SPEAKER_09Uh yeah, initially my first uh board uh shop sponsor. They they they hooked it up. Like uh Lance was kind of like my way in, like, like I said before, we linked up at Kona one afternoon, and then I kind of started to pursue.
SPEAKER_07Like I wanted to ride for them, and then I just How long were you skating at that time when uh when they wanted to like start hooking you up?
SPEAKER_08Mullen coming in with the great questions. You might just take your co-host spot, Doc one time.
SPEAKER_05I don't get paid enough for this shit, all right?
SPEAKER_09Probably, I don't know, I'm gonna guess uh 14, 15, something like that, maybe six.
SPEAKER_07Nah, I wasn't driving yet, so it might have been like 14, 15. Yeah, but like uh I mean like years on on board, like on a skateboard, like from you starting to then being like, was it like two years skating? Probably like two, three years. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, dude. You were progressing fast.
SPEAKER_05I remember the first time I seen you was uh in uh truck stop magazine. We had the nose grind down the 11th stair rail. Like that was like because I never saw you in person, but then I I saw that and Dougie was working at Kona, and yeah, I was like, yo, he rides for you, and he's like, Oh yeah, dude. I think you're talking about a kickflip. No, because he didn't only flip down it, but there's also a nose grind one, too.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, that was actually I think it was FTK. Oh, it was FTK, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_07Ft for the crew. Yeah, that was from Gainesville, right? When we went on that Gainesville trip. Is that that 12 stair that you you kick flipped over in the parking lot?
SPEAKER_09No, that was a little later. I I know what you're talking about. Oh, this was at FTK, and this was when we went to um the damn am in Minneapolis. And uh it was actually a crown ad in the FTK. Yeah, it was, yeah. Um, but yeah, I remember.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, no, that show is wild.
SPEAKER_08Yeah. So how you know, how many places have you been, you know, privileged to go fucking travel and see, you know, because of skateboarding?
SPEAKER_09Uh not not much. I we went to that damn man in Minneapolis. That was cool, and then uh just all Florida pretty much.
SPEAKER_08And then that Alabama trip.
SPEAKER_09Oh yeah, Alabama.
SPEAKER_08We don't talk about those. Hey, I lived in Mobile for like a year and a half and goddamn rich, you did. That was an interesting experience to say the least.
SPEAKER_07Tampa missions. Yeah. You skated Tampa Am once, right? Uh, I think like two times. Two times?
SPEAKER_09Yeah. I got lucky once because I think uh Evan Marcel was signed up and he couldn't skate it, and uh they gave me his spot. I think through Daddy.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, Duddy, yeah, Duddy hit me up too because he was like he was like, Evan's not gonna skate. He's like, Do you want to see it? It's in between you or Jason. And that was not long after we went on that Gainesville trip when you kick flipped over that rail and you were on like a tear. I was like, dude, I was like, give that spot to Jason, bro. Like he's hungry, like he'll he'll kill it. Hell yeah.

Family Life And Finding Time To Skate
SPEAKER_08wife now? Yeah, yeah. Got the family?
SPEAKER_09Yeah, I got two daughters.
SPEAKER_08Oh, nice, yep, me too. Me too. How old are they?
SPEAKER_09Uh four and eight.
SPEAKER_08Heck yeah. Very, very cool, very fun age. My uh youngest is seven, and my oldest is fourteen. My youngest turns eight tomorrow.

SPEAKER_08It's been wild because my oldest just started high school this year. I'm like, holy shit. I remember when you were a baby just dreaming about the day. There was like, oh, one day she's gonna be on now. I'm like, you're two years from driving. Holy fuck. Fuck. We got orientation and they're all like, now it's time to start thinking about colleges because she goes to DA for uh violin and all this stuff. Make sure they're all on the right track. I'm like, holy shit. Yeah, my daughter goes to Lambert. How um how often are you able to skate balancing work and dad life?
SPEAKER_09I try to skate at least uh once a week. Some some weeks I'll skate like three days and then it'll go two weeks and I won't skate because of whatever's going on. Um setup in my backyard, so sometimes I just pop out and cruise for like 30 minutes, just kind of you know, roll around. Hell yeah. But uh yeah, I've been actually going out to to Willie Yeah, saplands. Yep, linking up with them and skating on the Wednesda Wednesday afternoons. Old man night.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, yeah, that's what's up. Now Willie's is a uh super fun spot. Um, especially now, I guess, because they had they had the pocket finished and yeah, the sessions look like they're firing over there.
SPEAKER_05Dude, I saw Timmy coming from like the corner of the pocket, nose blunting around the pretty much the whole fucking thing. Wow. Yeah. And like he was he wasn't coming back in, dude, but he went just a little bit faster. He could do it like it one day. Yeah. I mean it it was just that's a long nose blunt slide. Dude, it was brutal. It reminded me of white Tim's Tim. You know, I mean why Tim is Tim.
SPEAKER_08Tim in time. Yeah, I've been uh struggling myself to find time to skate. I even got a little driveway kind of set up. And man, by the time I get home from work, especially just right now with how hot it is, it's like if it's not that afternoon hurricane that rolls in, it's like still 98 degrees out, and like at five o'clock, it shouldn't feel this bad out here.
SPEAKER_07I'm baked when I get home from work, dude. I'm like, I'm done.
SPEAKER_08So last weekend, um, my wife was out of town for a week. Um, well, she left on Sunday, but they did a back to school thing at Kona Friday night, so my kids wanted to go. So I went with them. Man, I lasted like 30 minutes. I was just burnt out from the day, and it was still so hot out there, and it was just radiating off the concrete. It's like I feel like I'm gonna throw up. I'm fucking go home. Go out the next day, skate for a little bit, end up fucking puking. Go out for a little bit Sunday, same thing. It was just like, I'm like, man, am I this out of shape or is it this hot out here? I'm on that skinny fat right now because I haven't been moving much lately. It's like I don't look like I'm not out of shape, but man, I gotta I gotta get my legs back.
SPEAKER_05Warm today, warm yesterday. It was even warm the day before that.
SPEAKER_07So, Jason, how long were you um cruising with the board city dudes before uh before like the Orange Park skate park started going? Because that's where I remember meeting you all you guys for like the first time was like over there on that side of town. And then you guys would come to like Skate Lab too. Yeah. Um, I don't remember.
SPEAKER_09I have a photo of me at OP Park when it was owned by Skate Station, I believe, when I was like 13. Um, and I've kind of seen it grow to what it is now over the years. But um man, I don't really remember the the time frame. I think we we already because the parks went through has gone through a bunch of phases. It was already like the phase before Team Pain.
SPEAKER_07Um there was like two phases before that, right? Like, didn't it? Yeah. That place has survived from the sheer love of the community out there. You guys held it down out there, and that's the why that place is even there, honestly.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, I never even went out there until it was all redone concrete. Yeah. Because I mean, you also got to think about Jacksonville's transportation systems are much better. They're still not good, but they're much better than they were, you know, 10, 20 years ago. I mean, now we got 295, all this. Now I remember when it was a pain in the ass just to go. When we first moved here, we lived off San Pablo, and it was before they widened Atlantic. And just getting from San Pablo and Atlantic to fucking Kona was a pain in the ass in the afternoon because everything bottlenecked right there at Regency. Now you can kind of get, you know, from one side of town to the other a little bit quicker with, you know, 295 and a couple of the other highways and stuff.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. It was pretty cool. I remember as like we were in St. Augustine at a time skating treaty a lot, but then like we'd go to OP to do like demos or you whatever skate contests, hang out with homies, and it would just be like a concrete lot with ledges and maybe a couple bank ramps and this and that, but the kids there were destroying it. Yeah, yeah, they were making everything out of what they had, you know, like 100% just determined.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, shout out to Jose Cruz. Jose Cruz, one of my homies I grew up skating with since like high school. He put in work, he built a lot of the stuff that we skated, like when you did the crown demos and all of that stuff out there. A lot of that stuff was was built by him and and the homies, you know, we all did some crown demos too, dude.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, it's yeah, it takes a community, and that's the beautiful thing about skateboarding. Um yeah, I mean, it's like those you know, spots where it's like really rooted like that, where it took the community to build it, to create the scene, the culture, you know what I mean, the the family of that spot or that park. Yeah, is is a beautiful thing.
Jacksonville Parks And The New Bridge Spot
SPEAKER_08Now, I'm very stoked for the park they're putting in underneath the Fuller Warren Bridge. You know what I mean? I'm really interested to see what like on a local, you know what I mean, how the how that develops. What's that? I mean, obviously there's so many skateboarders right around this area. Have you seen the design? I mean, just the like rough CAD drawings that they've published. It's very like I don't think I don't it's it's very street league feeling. And there's like there's like a couple of like very minimal tranny, mainly a bunch of ledges. There's like some gaps that look like where there was uh a bush gonna be like a bank to bank, you know what I mean? And like a bush in between, maybe might be a faux bush, I don't know if it'll be real, but shit like that. There's at the one end gonna be J A X and real big, like concrete colorful letters. Um, so if you're driving down Riverside Avenue, you'll have Ram on the left, and then you'll see like J A X real bad right there. Yeah, but it's like there looks like there's gonna be a couple of like quarters, couple of you know, banks, but it's there's not gonna be a bowl. There's it's all gonna basically be street deposit, which it's really cool. And I know that that fits that side of town completely. Yeah and there was a lot of I saw social media discord amongst the scene about you know there not being a bowl there or a mini ramp, or like all this, like, oh, they're just building this for and it's like, man, how many bowls do we have? I mean, you can go to you can go to fucking Conan Skate their pool, you can go to Jack's Beach, you can go to Monuments, got a whole bunch of bold pockets and stuff. You know what I mean? There's all these cookie cutter parks that try to incorporate every aspect of skateboarding, which is great, but I'm like, I think it's gonna be really cool. I think where it's gonna probably attract a lot of events and people from outside of Jacksonville looking the same way. Lot 11, when that popped up, you know what I mean? They I mean that park look I haven't skated it yet, but just seeing on social, I follow their social media page, I mean they got events going on there, they got people from all over always popping in, you know. I mean, I think I think this is gonna be huge for our city and for our community. And the fact that this city is embracing skate, like this has always been a pretty rad skate city, in my opinion. But the fact that now, like, the public officials are really like yes, well, not only do we want to fund a free park for our skaters, we want to put it in a very central popping part of our town. Like, we want to showcase how much we embrace skateboarding. So, just from a taxpayer in Jacksonville that grew up skateboarding, you know what I mean? I'm like, fuck yeah, that's cool. You know what I mean? Like, that's a nice turn of events for sure. Yeah, yeah. I mean, and and also I'm like, man, if we just all the old heads bitching about there not being a bull there, they better shut the fuck up before they decide not to put a park there because they're like, if y'all can't agree amongst yourselves, then we won't spend the millions of dollars. And uh I guess Jake had a contact with Duddy through, I guess, a scene or somehow, and it was like, hey, you you know, and it just kind of Duddy was like, Hell yeah, and then I went to a Kona contest and Duddy walked up and gave me a crown board, and it was on ever since then.

Crown Skateboards Transfer Story
SPEAKER_08Alright, guys, your boy Paulie. I'm still here with the doctor, the one and only Jason Clone, and the homie Aaron Mullen. Sam, Sam's glitch. I walked in and I said, damn it, man, y'all are telling stories and we're not recording.
SPEAKER_07What story did I walk in on, please? Um, shit. Alright, we were talking about the transfer of crown coming from Panama City to Jacksonville, Florida, when it switched from the original owner Chuck to the owner Duddy, the one who put him on. Right. And um Chuck was a great dude, like I said before, like the family, the Sunsac family, all of them. Many thanks to them for starting it and running it and holding it down for so long. But when you right when you walked in, I was talking about where um they had a skate park before, and then that one shut down, and then they opened up another one, and then then his park got robbed, and they took all this product, and that like kind of broke Chuck's heart. He was like, Man, I'm doing this for the community. It's like the only motherfuckers that want to come and rob skateboard shit is fucking skateboarders. Yeah, you know, so he's like, Why am I even doing this anymore for these for this area, you know? And Duddy had just got out of college and he was skating pretty good. You know, Duddy was the man back before he got like really into school, so I knew he always had a lot of potential. And I was like, Man, if he wants to ride, I was like, come with me to Panama City, you need to meet everyone. Because I can't just give you the thumbs up. Like, you gotta meet everybody.
SPEAKER_05You know what? Uh I almost got Duddy here today, boys. Uh I was weaseling Duddy in here today, too. Yeah, we gotta get him on for sure.
SPEAKER_07But um I was I was trying hard. And so I took Duddy there to meet everybody, and uh, I guess him, they just got to talking. Duddy just graduated, he's got a business degree, so he was like putting it in Chuck's ear or whatever. Like, I'm really interested in trying to do something with this, maybe ride for the company or do more or whatever. And Chuck was, I think, at that time, like kind of fed up and just ready to like wash his hands of it, you know. Yeah, yeah. So he he let Duddy take the reins, and Duddy had a business partner for a little while. I think he even borrowed some money from Marty to get it go to get it all going. Yeah, for sure. And um but then that was it. And then once once that happened, the whole the whole hands changed, you know, like it's no longer in Panama City. We're here in Jacksonville, like the the graphics changed, the shapes changed. We started fucking make filming videos, doing ads in magazines. Like it got a lot more like constructed and motivated when it moved from Panama City to here to Jacksonville.
SPEAKER_05Weren't you the uh original member that like threw the transfer, stayed on the team again?
SPEAKER_07Yeah, me and Carl Nagley made it through the transfer. Oh, yeah. We were the only ones. Well, Tim technically too. Tim got on right before Chuck turned Tim pro that he went pro for Crown before Bacon. So that's actually Tim too. Nice now that it's all coming back to me. Wow. Yeah. But um, yeah, because Tim was on DNA before Crown.

I'm always envious of the guys that can go out and skate and like put a trick down and minimal because it just especially if you're filming it, it looks so fucking cool when somebody comes out of the shadows and it's like pop landed down a fucking stair set and then right back into the shadows. Like, no way in hell can I do that shit. My depth perception gets way off with the shadowing.

How Skateboarding Keeps Evolving

SPEAKER_09No, it's it's just like a concrete bank in the back of this elementary school off 103rd. I do not know about that one. I do not know that one either. Super good.

SPEAKER_08Growing up, most of my like street skating was like from downtown to through like Arlington and the south side to the beaches, like kind of that side is where I kind of grew up. So I've only been I like lived in Riverside for a little bit, but now Murray Hill. I've only been here for like a year and a half. So I'm kind of been discovering all these spots a little like. Oh yeah, we've skated that for fucking 20 years, and I'm like, well, I just fucking found it. Brand new to me.

Every time, every once in a while I'll see one man like on the on the road, and I bring back just the nostalgia of kind of like that era of like teenage skating, having homies packed in this little extended cab, four deep, fucking maybe one or two in the back, you know what I mean, driving all across town. Um what car were you uh were were you pimping at that time? Well when you were 16. What was the first whip as you're whipping around town to skate spots?
SPEAKER_09I was I'm I'm a Honda guy. I had a Civic, I still got a Civic, but um coming up, we used to ride in uh a Pathfinder. It was uh it was my boy Justin. We used to call it the pirate ship. Hell yeah.

SPEAKER_09We used to pile coming for the booty heavy in this thing. And we we had like uh a Mandarin, uh the Mandarin High School that had like these perfect metal benches, and we had one, and we would put it in the back, and we would take it to like different like two-stair spots and skate it, and like literally like just shoved in there like that's badass.
SPEAKER_07You guys stole a spot from the street. Yeah, it's like that Anthony Van England bench shit. Like, I'm taking this motherfucker with me. Oh shit. Those the pirate shit got some booty that day. Yeah, that's awesome, Jason. That's a hell of a story.
SPEAKER_08So we actually, when the UNF skate park, when they first were announcing they were closing that, I went in one night and I hopped the fence with a buddy Brad, um, and we took the bench. And we fucking did that because for a little while, it was like I would take it fucking spot to spot, or if it was fucking raining. Because I was living in these apartments near Regency, so I'd just take it over to that like parking garage by the old mall when it was raining. I'd just fucking put it in there and skate the bench. Now it's actually at Kona because when I was managing there and we were tearing some stuff out because it was, I was like, these kids need something. So I fucking bolted it out there. But I was like, that bench was too fucking good. I tried to go back for some more stuff, but by then it was like they were keyed in on it. Dude, that rail was good as fuck to at UNF. Well, I went there and I to try to skate. I didn't know they were closing it and it was chained up. And I was like, fuck. And there was a notice saying they were gonna close it, and then I looked and somebody had already hopped over, I think, and was taking the skate light because there was missing clearly like a full sheet randomly from like two spots. Yeah, I'm gonna go. And I was and that's where I was like immediately. I didn't have a truck at the time. I called my buddy Brad. I was like, yo, fucking 9:30 tonight. Come to my house. Fucking come to my house. And I went ahead. Well, I went ahead in the middle of the day, I hopped the fence and I fucking took a look at the lug, the nuts that it was bolted, and I was like, that looks like a fucking tire iron would fit it. And sure as shit, dude, I just brought a fucking four-way thing and fucking cranked them lugs up. Fucking we both hooked it over the fence and in his truck and we were gone. Hell yeah.

SPEAKER_08Well, that was like, I mean, even most recently, um, you know, Cameron McKeachin had taken the Florida Times Union handrail. And um before they, you know, just the old before they tore it all down. I didn't know about that. Yeah, well, right over here um next to the Amazon on uh blanding, they fucking concreted it in going down this gap, and they did a little able skate mag fucking bangers for bucks on that rail. I saw that. It sucks because that property just got purchased and they immediately fenced the whole fucking thing. But you can see the rail is still there, and you're like, fuck, man, if it didn't, fuck, we should go in there and get it back. Did that though? That's badass. Yeah, shoutouts to uh old snake proof on Instagram as well, because you know, he's got a whole bunch of shit stored at his parents' house and stuff, like random curbs and rails, and like whenever a spot is about to get destroyed, he's like fucking taking the shit and then going and making uh uh he runs also the uh Instagram Jack's shitty DIY. Oh, that's who that is. Yeah, Cam. Because Cam is the type of DIY guy, he is not cutting shit into the concrete, so it's like a smooth transition. He doesn't expect it to last long, so he'll just come with a few bags of concrete and like a form, and it'll like so you have that little bump at the bottom, it's not the smoothest, it's yeah, it's janky to say the least. SPEAKER_09Uh I was at OP before the park that we have now, the the last skate light park.
SPEAKER_08Oh, yeah, that one was that one's really good. Yeah, yeah, I never got to skate that, but I had seen pictures of it.

SPEAKER_08I like the pyramid hips. Like a China China bank, like a bank to wall, like, yeah, like a bunch of stuff, dude.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, the little mini ramp. The mini ramp was the best. I think that was really the best ramp in town for it.
SPEAKER_07Wow. Yeah. I like how you guys had that one. It was like the long ledge that had the little baby ledge set down in the middle, so you could do like grind manny combos. SPEAKER_09They actually came out and helped me with one of the quarter pipes in my backyard. Is it concrete? Yeah, yeah. Oh, sick. That's badass, Jason. Hell yeah. And you got like a nice little setup. What do you got going on?

SPEAKER_09Two quarter pipes, an A-frame with an A-frame rail. Oh, sick. Like a little quarter beside, um, I think it's like uh 10 feet, and then the back wall is uh twelve feet wide. One is like full of fucking grind on these quarter pipes. 3-8, and then the other one's like uh 3-6. But yeah, nice.
SPEAKER_08Just little fucking back and forth.
SPEAKER_09I've been uh thinking about adding some stuff to it. I just can't make up my mind because I don't want to build something and then kind of like lock in the possibilities of in the future being able to add on to it.
SPEAKER_08So I'm kinda like, eh, but hey, well, when you do if you ever need an extra hand, holler at your boy. I'm fucking always down to help with that kind of stuff.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, yeah. And that sounds fun. Yeah, it looks dope. A-frames are so fun to do gnolly tricks on. Yeah, they just get that little boom. You don't gotta try, you don't gotta try as hard on an A-frame for some reason because there's nothing to clear. You just it's already cleared.
SPEAKER_08It's already done. No, you're right. Honestly, that is what is very fun about it. It's like you just get that little pop and then you float. You got no deck to clear, no fuck nothing to do.
SPEAKER_07You know, if you just get that little boom, you're like, I'm gonna make it.
SPEAKER_08Oh yeah. Yeah, that's what's up. So, did you do, I mean, the concrete work at your house?
SPEAKER_09Yeah, yeah. Yeah, a lot of it. Yeah, man. I I built one quarter pipe four feet wide, four feet tall. Man, I spent all day, and by the end of it, I couldn't get it to finish right, and it was all ashy and stuff, and I was so bummed. Ended up like jackhammering out and using all of that for feel for the other work. For rubble, hell yeah. Yeah. Then I we built the A-frame. Me and my my my wife helped me out a lot. Me and her did a lot of the work, and we did uh we did the A-frame and kind of got the hang of it of finishing it. It was a lot a little bit easier. Then a quarter pipe. Yeah, yeah. And since we got when we got that down, then we were just like on. Fuck yeah. Does your wife skate? No, she doesn't. She's just down, she's just a massive supporter of everything that I do. She's a solid woman.

SPEAKER_09That's everything you need, right there. That rail there is actually, if you remember the skate light part, uh, OP that we were talking about. You remember in the back where it had the two hubbas and it had the little rail in the middle? Yes.
SPEAKER_07That a-frame rail is that rail. Really? Yeah, dude. I remember that little A-frame because it's like had that, and then that the other little pyramid, the hubber that went up across and down on the far side. Yeah. Yep.
SPEAKER_08That's fucking dope, dude. Yeah, yeah. Fucking if I had that, I'd definitely be making more time to skate. No, we don't own the house in my driveway. It was definitely amateur hour when whoever, you know, or poured it. Whenever Paul made it.

SPEAKER_08So it's uh it isn't the smoothest. So at times it gets a little discouraging. Like I said, after a long day when it's super hot, it's like, I don't want to fucking fall on that rough concrete right now. Dude, Paul's got a sick fucking pole jam rail. Yeah, and we never fucking skate it. I well, I can't, dude. Well, I know you can't. I just mean like me. I just never do.

SPEAKER_08Yeah, that was just all kind of salvage metal. Me and Joey one day, I was like looking at this one awkward rail that had like this weird, awkward bend in it. I was like, Well, if I take this scrap piece of sheet steel and this can we cut it at an angle, it could be like a rainbow pole jam rail, you know, and just a perfect little rainbow rail. And then another one I got out there was this steel display from the company that I work at in their showroom, and it it's like these two big long L brackets of this perfect, like three inch wide tube, like square tube steel. And I'm like, they're just gonna trash it. I'm like, can I fucking have that? Yeah. They were like, What for what? Everybody just kept questioning me what I was. I was like, Yeah, I'm gonna make a skateboard rail. And they're all looking at all these fucking adults looking at me, like, oh, are you fucking 15? What is getting? What? People who don't get it, they just don't get it. No, but uh brought it home and then we, you know, Joey helped me welder, cut it. We had to cut like the ends off it, and then put a footer in the middle and weld two pieces together because it's already naturally bent, like these kind of weird QLs. And it's fucking perfect and it grinds. Yeah, and then so I went back like a week later and showed everybody in the show. I was like, this is what I made with it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I want to see somebody like nose grind it, like like come in like just straight nose grind it, like nose manual through it, you know what I mean? You know what I mean? On that rail?
SPEAKER_08Yeah, they'll lock in perfectly because it's like fucking as wide as your truck is, you know, your hell yeah, your hangar. But did you uh were you always kind of building your own stuff growing up at your as you were skating? Because I was yeah, if they were building a house in my neighborhood, I was stealing some plywood in two by four.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, it was kind of the same scenario in my neighborhood, a lot of wood ramps and just kind of make it work. I remember one time we had like a three-quarter inch piece of plywood, like an eight sheet, and we lean it against like the those uh mailboxes, like the the one that has multiple boxes in one, and made a bank out of it, and we used to skate that and stuff like that. It was wild stuff.
SPEAKER_08Hell yeah. Yeah, I remember we even at one time on the side of my house was like it could have been a damn makeshift skate park, how many things we like accumulated. It was like a little kicker here, little quarter pipe, and everybody in the neighborhood come over and we pull pull all the shit out. Yeah, but uh we had made a little like ledge, little box, and I remember going and finding out how much angle iron was because my whole vision was like, Oh, I made it out of this plow, it's two by four, we're gonna put angle iron on it, just like they got at the skate parks, like right? And I was like, Yeah, my fucking 14-year-old ass did not have the money for that. So we found at a construction site some PVC piping, and so we modified it and and like sunk the PVC like into it. Yeah, but that shit, you know, eventually would crack, you know.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I remember when I was a kid growing up.
SPEAKER_08You never had to wax it.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, like most of the half pipes in Palm Valley where I was as a kid, they all had PVC coping on the ramps because no one little kid could go get a steel piece of coping, you know, like or much less your parents were gonna go get you one. Yeah, you know, like that just wasn't happening. But a lot of broken coping.
SPEAKER_08I I knew I knew I knew a couple of kids um that had little ramps, and their uh their dads would go buy them the like terminal post, the corner post for a chain link fence, yeah, and they would use that, but they that shit's actually a little bit kind of what so it always make for the bonkiest coping.
SPEAKER_07It was like, yeah, almost PVC would be better. Dude, my buddy had a PVC rail one time that was like a square, like for like a fence post, like you're saying, but he put the four by four inside of it, so it had like a lot of support on the inside. That thing lasted forever. We had to literally grind. The plastic off of the fucking wood with the trucks like ah damn, this shit lasted forever. Hell yeah.
SPEAKER_08Because it was a hollow, I guess, you know, like but yeah, and back then me trying to make anything, I feel like nowadays, especially with social media, the younger generation is so much more keyed into on DIY shit with concrete. When I was a fucking Grom, I was like, other than Kona, and even then the street course was all wood and like sheet metal, you know? I thought other than if it was a concrete downhill run or a pool, you know, around here, all we had was fucking built. So it wasn't even on my radar. I didn't start fucking around with concrete till I was an adult. Me neither. Yeah, it was just all wood stuff in my driveway.

SPEAKER_07Let's see. So, Jason, what um did you get did skate Carl Nagley's ramp a bunch? That bowl out there in the woods? Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_09Like Jungle Paradise. Went out there for the first time with uh peanut with Drew. Hell yeah, shout out. Yeah, man. Skating with him for a little while.
SPEAKER_08And uh super fun. Yeah, I heard Carl's trying to build something back. He wants to do just a big mini ramp. Yeah, really? I can't wait.
SPEAKER_05Like the old one, that big mini ramp.
SPEAKER_08Well, I think he said yes, but so for those that didn't know, Carl's, and you can go back and check on a previous episode of Polly on the Post. He was one of our former guests, and we talk all about it at length. But it was kind of this whole thing, there's like a large mini ramp, is I think was the first part of it, right? Was that six-foot mini ramp?
SPEAKER_07It originally, but then it was but then that fell apart, and then he built the four-footer next to it, right? And then he made that a spine. And then after he had the spine, then he's like, I'm building the six-footer again with the eight-foot extension. Yeah. And then all that turned into the bowl.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, you could come from the eight-foot extension and fly out and baby mega jump. Like a snowboard jump, dude. And it was a massive bowl. And then even at the you know, towards the end, he had that small bowl that spined off that bigger bowl that didn't have the corners. Yeah. I mean, I feebled through that corner. It was the fucking craziest feeling.
SPEAKER_06Oh, the no-pocket corner? Yeah.
SPEAKER_08That's fucking gangster. That's scary, dude. Fucking, I don't know why. I can on spines and whenever there's no deck. I never on in. Yeah, I mean, I I I'm not a vert skater. I've had my few tricks. I like to skate vert when I have the opportunity, but it was never my thing back in my heyday. I wasn't keyed in on vert. It was street and then like parks. You know what I mean? I just or a mini rant, you know? Yeah. Um so I never really got feebles on Vert. I never tried them. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_07Never. It's a different kind of thing when there's an actual deck there.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, but I know that when the steeper it is, you can lock in. You can't. You know what I mean? But when it's on small stuff, I've only ever tried them on whether there's a no-deck or it's a spine, because you can fucking hang on a spine. That's one of the funnest feelings, or if there's a no-deck coping ramp, exactly. You just hang spine.
SPEAKER_07The spine's probably the best for it. But if you can if you can like get street skating feeble grinds, like if you could feeble grind ledges, you could fucking feeble grind a quarter pipe. You know, like if you get that spot, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_08And I cannot feeble grind ledges. Some accidentals. Yeah, maybe some accidentals. So uh if you had to choose what flat bar or uh or or ledge. Probably a ledge. I do like scanning flat bars too. If if it's a flat bar, do you like a square rail or a round rail? That's what she said.
SPEAKER_09I don't know. I'll probably say round. I like the way that it locks in. Now let me get this debate going.

SPEAKER_08If it's a nose grind on a rail, is it a nose grind or an overcrook? Front side? Front side or backside? Front side. You know what I'm saying? Oh, like so when you do a front side nose grind. Whenever you do front side nose grind, the way that you pinch, it your back truck tends to always drift.
SPEAKER_07In my opinion, I'd I would like to think it's an overcrook. But I mean, people the people don't like to label it that for some reason. I'm with you. I'm with you. If if you're pinching, if you go nose grinding and you're pinching that way, that's overcreased. In my opinion, a nose grind should be straight, exactly, parallel and balanced. Yep.
SPEAKER_08But you can't really do that on a circle rail. You fucking can. Yeah, you can't perfectly balanced.
SPEAKER_07Like people do five O's like that and stuff. Like true, I guess you're right. It does happen, but it's rare. Yeah, it's really easier to pinch it. Right. That's I think that's why the whole over crook is so popular in general, because once Jamie Foy figured out how to lock that shit in, everybody just popped the pose.
SPEAKER_08I guess I'm also because I've never been able to when I when I was doing them on round rails, uh, they just always automatically pinched in. Always. And I'm like, no, it's a fucking nose grind, trying to do a nose grind. I do nose grinds on everything.
SPEAKER_07It's way easier on a ledge or like a square rail to do like the balanced nose manual move. For sure. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_08Yeah, and you have a very smooth style just from being somebody that's you know seen you skate, you know, over the years. Like whether you're skating a ramp or you're skating a ledge or anything, I've seen you skate, like you just have a very smooth style.

It was kick flip overing it, kick flip overing it, like bolts, bolts, zipping out, stop and fall forward. But dude, he'd land, it was like you were like, whoa.

Or that's like one and a half, like that's how I always justified it in my brain that I was like, would have visualized me standing on two of me and jumping off, or like jumping off my parents' roof because I got the frisbee that got thrown. You know what I mean? Whatever it was, was like I would always equate it to my height versus it, and was like, stop being a pussy. It's one you know what I mean. How did you approach those things?
SPEAKER_09I just kind of was just pushing myself to the limit, see how far I could go, really. Yeah. I remember going to skate this uh it's actually it's an apartment complex, it's off of 17, and me and Marcus went there on a mission one afternoon, and it's pretty much a two-story, come off the second, it's like the apartments and the walkway, and then there's like I think it's like 13 or 14. And I remember all in that, and it was kind of like a steeper one, and the feeling of being out here, like the stairs here, being out here, was frightening. Like I think that's probably like the biggest thing I ever tried, and I I stuck it a couple times and never landed it because the the people that lived in the apartments came out, and it was, you know, we never went back to it. But yeah, I don't know. I just kind of that was a big one. Yeah, yeah. That was like some jaw shit, dude.
SPEAKER_07Sounds like it, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_09Um, but yeah, just kind of just pushing myself. We used to skate the Cecil 7 a lot when I was younger. Oh, yeah. That was a good one.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, I just you fucking skate a seven pretty regularly, then you start looking at uh.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I remember going over to Marcus's house after you had got that, you know, attempted to get the clip, and he was like, dude, look at this shit that Jason tried the other day. And he showed me that footage, and I was like, holy fuck. I was like, what the fuck? Yeah, I would love to see that footage. Yeah, man. God, I'm sure he's got it on a hard drive somewhere. Yeah.
SPEAKER_09But yeah, just kind of just pushing myself. That's kind of how I saw it.
SPEAKER_07Like, I think this the situation I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt you. I think the situation sometimes will push you to the limit, too. Like you're out of town, you got you got the homies there, yeah, the dude with the camera, and the photographer. You got you know you want it, you know you can do it. You've been talking about it. Yeah, you know what I'm saying? Like, it's time to do it. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05We came here because you wanted to come here.
SPEAKER_07Exactly, yeah. No, someone else took us to that spot because they were like, Yeah, such and such backlipped it. And it was like David Gonzalez or something, like from Flip. You know, we're like, well, I was like, damn, this rail must be fucking gnarly. And we get there, and it was. And it was, yeah. It was real, it wasn't one of those nice rails where you're like, oh, this looks fun to grind. The rails like this, like shoot you into the fucking ground. Yep. I couldn't mess with that rail. I don't know. That's why you kick flipped it. Yeah. We were talking about grinding it, and none of us were like, dude, this shit looks like just we're going to the hospital. Yeah. You know, like the kickflip.

SPEAKER_07No, go for it. Well, like shit, dude. Um, where do you what specifically did you want to do you want me to just talk about getting on crown and shit again? Or did did you skate contests like a young kid? Like I did. I skated um I skated a lot of Kona contests back when they were like the my first Kona contest was when the street course was still up at the top of above the concrete quarter pipe. I mean the concrete half pipe. Wow. Back in those times, and then um and then I met Lindsay at skate asylum. Lindsey, dating contest. Yeah, Lindsay Robertson and Joey Corey and Ryan Corey, Chris Kindle, all those just a gang of heel flippers, just a gang of heavy hitters, yeah. Gang of heel flippers, just a whole just a lot of them, a big squad. Ryan was always a kick flipper, but Joey was a heel flipper and Lindsay was a heel flipper, and I was a heel flipper. It was like a beach thing. Like it kind of was because like if you went in town to Riverside, they'd be like, You guys doing those fucking beach flips? You know, like that's my new flip.
SPEAKER_08It was one of those things. Dude, that's what I'm gonna fucking refer to it as always.
SPEAKER_07Fucking beach flip. Yeah, beach flips, especially if you did a heel flip indie. That was like a no-no. Yeah, but I used to rock that trick religiously.
SPEAKER_08I don't understand all the faux paws with the tricks. I mean, there are some tricks that are like clearly corny, but it's like, yeah, heel flip indie, I always thought it was a rad fucking trick. It's a cool trick. Yeah, because I like the way when your heel goes and how a lot of times when you it's just it's the different body.
SPEAKER_07I think they look cool. It's kind of like how a kick flip melon is. Yes. Like it flips it, like flip the board goes into your hand, yeah, so it's like easier to catch. Like the heel flip indie is the same way, like the board's gonna fold into your fingers. Like, I think like kickflip indie is harder because you have to like catch it with your palm. Yep. Like stuff like that. You could kick flip indie though, pretty fucking good.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, I was into kick flip andies growing up quite a bit.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, the shekelair. You ever run Tiny Hawk's pair skater? Ryan Scheckler's uh trick was a kick flip indie, a special move. The Scheckler air. Yeah, they just call it the Sheckler.
SPEAKER_08That's fucking hilarious. No, I do not recall that.
SPEAKER_07Did you skate a lot with uh Lindsay? Like I like, yeah. Lindsay was like a year younger than me. So uh when I got my permit or my driver's license, I didn't have a fucking car or anything, but my mom would let me use her forerunner and I would go pick Lindsay up, and we would go either downtown or to skate asylum, or we'd drive all the way out to Carl Nagley's. Because uh when I first met Lindsay, they were he was on crown and Carl Nagley were on crown, and those were the two dudes here in Jacksonville that were like representing that brand. Gotcha. And uh Flatline was uh still beast at at the time, I think. And so there was like not a lot of uh options who to get sponsored by, but those were the two you're like, man, those dudes are the fucking best, you know. But Lindsay was just always super motivated, and I met Lindsay talk about somebody not scared to jump down shit. Holy fuck. I mean, he's like, I'll fucking Ollie off the vert ramp. But I remember meeting him at the old Seawalk Pavilion, and uh like I was doing heel flips, and I I walk up there, and like we're skating the seventh stair, and uh the old pavilion was so sick, so good, it was so sick, bro. And uh I heel flipped it, and Lindsay was like, You're a heel flipper? He's like, I'm a heel flipper, and I'm like, Oh, really? That's where we greet each other, Chris. Don't laugh. He ran up there and just heel flipped it first try to just show me that he's a heel flipper, you know? And I'm like, damn, dude, this dude can just fucking heel flip the seven stair on command. Yeah, and uh, but he lived right down the street from it, so he could skate it a bunch. Like, if I wanted to go to the Seawalk Pavilion as a kid, like I'd either have to get my mom's car or I'd ride my fucking bike from Palm Valley to Jack's Beach. It would take me an hour to get there, but yeah, but anyways, man, a lot of times, dude, it goes, I could fucking tell stories for hours, bro.
SPEAKER_08But that's why it's story time with Aaron Mom.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, man. Like skating Carl Nagley's ramp really taught me how to skate ramps a bunch. Like just having Carl is kind of like the type of dude who's like, he's real mellow, he's real laid back, he's open arms, come skate anytime you want. And he'll take the time to kind of like work out the stuff that you don't really understand. You're like, man, how do you do this with how do you blunt the fakie? You know, because I remember blunt the fakies when you're first learning ramps, that's like death-defying, right? Yeah, and Carl's got the little weird ones where he just does a little faky manual out of it. Yeah, yeah. He doesn't even do the full pop, land four wheels. So he's like trying to teach you all these little nuances, like, yeah, this little pressure here, faky manual. And I'm like, I'm fucking faky ollieing back to the flat bottom.
SPEAKER_09Like, how um how when did Carl bill that ramp? Like, how old were you when you know? I remember seeing that ramp when I was a young kid on this show called Blue Torch, and then I went to it and I didn't even know it was in Jacksonville and like pulled up, but this was like a long time ago.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, so I was in probably ninth grade, so probably like 1996 is when I first found out about it. But the ramp had been there for a long time before that. Holy shit. How old is he? He's pretty old. Yeah, I mean, definitely I think he's in his 50s, right? Yeah, yeah. He's always been into skating, and that's the other funny thing about it is like when I found out about it through these kids who barely skated that were like rednecks out in the middle of fucking St. Augustine who just went to my school, and they're like, Hey man, you want to see something cool?
SPEAKER_08Yeah, they're like, Oh, you guys skateboard?
SPEAKER_07There's a there's a ramp out in the woods, you know, like pretty much. And so then my buddy Ken Rawson took me over there, and we're like, damn, dude, this is like a fucking nice half pipe. And then Carl shreds, yes, you know, so you're like, holy shit, like this is like a golden nugget in the middle of fucking nowhere.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, Carl does mini ramp tricks that you would never fucking think of. You're like, what the fuck?
SPEAKER_07And so then we started skating it there, but then I went to Kona one time and we're skating the other ramp, and we were just talking, blah, blah, blah, blah. And we were like, yeah, Carl Nagley this, Carl Nigley that. He fucking we're just talking about how good he is. And one of the older dudes was, I can't remember, I want to say it was someone like Dave Suede or whatever. It was an older dude who knew what the fuck he was talking about, though, you know? Yeah, yeah. And he was like, Carl Nagley. It's like I've been out on that ramp in that woods, it fucking sucks. But he wasn't talking about the new ramp. He was talking about like the older ramp when Carl I'd seen the template for it, it looked horrible. It was had lumps and fucking bumps in it. So I could see why someone would complain about that ramp. Probably cut it with a jigsaw. Exactly. Learning like you had to jackhammer your quarter pipe. You know, it's never perfect the first couple tries, but but yeah, so that ramp has been there for I don't know 30 years. I don't know.
SPEAKER_08Wow, dude. Yeah, the first time I went there, Wildman took me when I would think I was like 17 or 18 years old. I was either just out of high school or about to be out of high school, and it was just because it was like a rule like, you know, no young kids, you know, are allowed down at the ramp. You know, there was that rule for a little while. And I was like, okay, all right, I'll wait my turn. And then I did, and I was like, holy fuck. This little slice of heaven.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. Florida was fucking rad. Like Yeah, Florida's crazy like that with what people will build. Like, uh, what's that other skate uh couple? Um what is his name? Is it Greg Miller or Cindy Miller? What were those? Not not Chris Miller. But there's this dude's they they have that huge clover concrete bowl out there in like the land.

It had it used to have the fiber rider out there that's in Dalton's backyard now. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
