Five Rare Pool Photos For A Good Cause: Mike Peterson, Aaron Mullen, Jake Schrickling

Five never-published black and white skate photos sat on a shelf for years, and now they’re doing what skateboarding does best: bringing people together. We’re joined by Aaron Mullen and Mike Peterson to talk about the legendary Jacksonville Beach backyard pool sessions that produced the shots, and how photographer and former FTK Skate Mag editor Jake Shrickling helped turn those images into a benefit raffle for Dr. Jones’ hip surgery GoFundMe. The prints are certified authentic, signed, and limited to only five, which makes them a real piece of Florida skateboarding history you can actually own.

The homie Aaron Mullen and the homie Mike Peterson came through because uh the one only Jake Shrickling uh reached out to me from Wyoming. Um he listened to the episodes and him being the former editor of FTK Skate Mag, he uh had a couple of shelved photos of Aaron Mullen and Mike Peterson in uh in Mike's pool from around like the I think the 2008 era. And uh they had never been published, and he was like, hey man, could we use this as a benefit, you know, to raise money for doc surgery? So the man was gracious enough, he reached out to a uh a local gallery out there, he got them certified, so we've got certificates of authenticity. There's only five of these photos ever printed. Um Mike and Aaron each got one, and then uh we sat down, had them autograph the remaining four of each print, and we will be raffling those off. Um you can go to the GoFundMe as the link in the bio of the Instagram at Polly on the Pod, as well as if you go to the YouTube channel, we've got a video episode of this episode with the link there posted. For every $25 you donate to Dr. Jones hip surgery fund, your name will go into a raffle. So make sure that you do not post anonymous when you uh when you donate. They look so good. So good. This is the first time I ever seen it, and I was I was blown away. Well, I did get to see it through like Jake's little viewfinder at the time. Right at the time. Years, many, many moons ago. But it was yeah, I can't. I'm like really excited. And I uh I wish he would have published that video of that photo of the damn magazine, but it's all good. I'm glad they're here now. It makes it even more special.

What what year was it? Um it was obviously, like we said, Mike's backyard pool. Yeah. Um obviously I'm sure heavy sessions going on.

For me to remember exactly what year it was is all those those times were going by so fast. But it was after I was done living with Tim in St. Augustine, I'd moved back up into Jacksonville to stay with George Evans. Okay. And he had that remember that ramp that he had in Dodge City where only one side had a deck and the other side had no deck.

Dodge City, right there behind uh like Inksmith on a lot. I spent too much time in that little drizzle party.

Nothing to be proud of. So we were skating that ramp a lot, and then um we all ended up moving out of there, and I was like, man, I don't know, I don't really got a place to live, I don't know where I'm gonna go, blah blah blah. You know, at a session or something, whatever. And then Peterson was just like, Oh my surfing mullin. Yeah, pretty much couch surfing mullin. A lot of the couches got surfed those times. But um I died, baby. Yeah, but Peterson was like, Oh, my neighbor Brian, which was he was a really cool dude, he was a surfer, and uh he's like he needed a roommate, and I was like, dude, I need a place to stay. So I started staying with Brian, and that's when I became Peterson's neighbor. Cool. Good lord. That's when he was just going ham on like the rock band, you know that, and he had it outside in his garage. So you could be the video games. So you would I could be in my house next door in my room in my bed, and I would just hear like smoke on the water playing. You'd hear him beating those fake ass drums, just like, oh man, let's go see what he's doing. That's great. It was great. And Mike's such a nice dude. Me and him have the same size shoe, so he'd always be giving me like hand-me-down shoes all the time. I even think in the photo is a pair of shoes that fucking Mike gave me. Hell yeah. He's an awesome guy. But so when they first got the house, the pool was always full. It was always full of water. Right. Swam through it all summer.

Like next to Ocean Oaks. All right, yeah, yeah. And uh I can't remember the name of the road or whatever, but uh and so once they drained it though, Peterson was like, Oh, I hope it's skatable, da-da-da. And then dude, he got it empty and we were like, holy shit. Like the main wall was like, you know, it went to vert, but it was kind of mellow. Right. And then the two side walls were like gnarly, had like a foot and a half of vert. Wow. And then the shallow end was skatable. You couldn't go over the stairs, the stairs were in the corner, so you couldn't like it's a 90-degree corner, so you couldn't like architect.

But you can definitely rip like shallow end, sidewall, deep in. Yeah, yeah. You know, if you're really gnarly, you'd do like the half pike back and forth, like on the gnarly walls. Yeah. Only like dudes like Joe Hio and shit would fuck around with stuff like that. Wow. And me. Yeah. And me. Oh, yeah. But a lot of really gnarly, a lot of really gnarly sessions went down. I remember like some other photographers that come down, like Rhino and Fick, to get photos of get photos of like Mike and Barard. Cool. Dude, there's a photo of Barard somewhere out there of him doing like uh a front side flip disaster at least like three feet above the coping. Wow. A huge one. That's brutal. And Peterson would destroy the pool. I mean, just completely obliterate the pool. His daughter would come outside and be like, my dad is the best. Like, no, we all know. We all know. No arguments here, no arguments here, Hannah. No arguments. Yeah. But uh the for me doing that, like I'm sure Peterson could have front uh done that hurricane like at any given moment, you know. Like he just destroyed the pool. But I had the battle to get that front

Yeah, and um, so I knew that I wanted to do it because you to do it, like there's the there's the light in the middle of the wall, so you had to front side flip like over the light, too. So you had to carve from the right side. Oh yeah, yeah. Front side flip over the light, and you're gonna make it like land kind of down in like the the pocket, like kind of where it starts to kind of become a pocket. And I was putting them down, but just never I'd I would land in that and not be ready for like the little whoop of the pocket, and either zip me out, or I'd be leaning too far forward, trying to overcompensate. And I think it was like the sixth or something session or ever George Evans was there, it was Peterson, it was getting later, and we were skating for a while, and then just like Jake just showed up. And dude, just like I swear, like it was always I always got real lucky with Jake for some reason. Like, he went to set up to shoot the photo, I did it like second fucking try. Wow, but I had been trying that for weeks, you know. Yeah, that's crazy how that happens, you know, just like the right time, the right energy, the right homies, and I was getting fed up too of just not fucking making it. Yeah, you know how that goes.

Definitely. So skating that pool was a big learning experience for me too, because there was other dudes, you know, like Brett Turner and Buck, and they're like very pool savvy skaters. They've skated a lot of lots of pools. Right. And I'm more of like a street skater guy, you know, so it's like I'm always like doing a shitty wall ride in the shallow end, like pushing in the fucking in the pool, right, right, right. You know, stuff like that. Don't only trying to do Ollie grab moves or fucking nose picks. Like I'm never just carving and grinding and like skating the pool. I'm in there to do a trick. Right, you know, like but there they used to man, when are we ever just gonna do a slash grind? What the fuck? You know, like all this kind of shit. Like but that you know that that kind of stuff makes you get better too.

At least two two, three years, maybe.

You know, they would fill it up, then it'd get drained again. Yeah, yeah. Once they but once they uh pebble tech it, they got the pebble tech surface and like like real coping, because before the lip was just tile, it was just like a tile lip. Right. You know? But once they got the coping and the resurface, it got a little tighter though, too. You know, because it added like that little layer or whatever.

So it just got like a little bit tighter, but it still skated really even like better. You know, you could get to the top easier and stuff like that. You get grinds going better. Sweet. It was really good. Tim Tim killed the pool too, of course. Oh, yeah. Like so many people skated it. So many did so.

Oh man, dude. So much stuff. Like talked about Bard's frontside flip disaster. Yeah. Tim did Tim did like frontside airs through the corner from like one wall into the steep gnarly wall. That sounds like a Tim trick for sure. Really gnarly. Fucking sick. Joe Hio. Joe Hio did all kind of stuff in it, dude. Like he could skate the side, like all the tight, really gnarly shit. Joe could cruise around in that, like it was just chill. You know, like so good. He do so many moves. I've seen I've seen Joe do like backside, tail slide, shovels on Vert and shit, and it's just like mind-blowing.

you know. Surfs up, yeah. So we're taking Ortiz down to Tampa and we're having a good time, and then Ortiz is like, so yeah, so where are you guys gonna be staying? And Duddy's just like, we're staying with you, man. We're we're with you. Wherever you go, we go. And then I was like, Oh, that's the that's the plan, and things kind of started to get a little bit awkward after that. The whole rest of the car ride, you could tell Ortiz was like, Fuck man, they're dropping me off at Schaefer's house. Like, I don't know if Schaefer's gonna be okay with this or whatever. Yeah, yeah. And so then we're we're sitting there at Schaefer's house, and I'm on I'm on the front porch, like on the stoop, like the little two-step or whatever outside. And I've I've been out there for like two hours, and Schaefer finally comes back and he's like, Man, do you guys have nowhere to go? And I'm like, Man, dude, like, we're broke. We got no, and he's like, come inside, and he let us stay the night. And I was like, dude, it was rad. He's like, they're skaters, dude. We're skaters, we'll they'll take care of us. And I'm like, man, this just feels so awkward, bro.

Yeah, so definitely the became real popular to skate the little kicker to the trunk or the hood because they were a little bit more manageable, but the the tall banks to go over the car were like 45 cuts, right? So steep. It was like you could I'm one struggle to get speed, two when you had the speed, you went straight up. You know what I mean? Yeah, yeah. You're like, woo, it was a struggle to clear the car. But uh a lot of people threw some shit down. There was uh uh back back lip Schmidt, um, had big Indy, big melon. Um I think he landed a kick flip eventually. Um there's somebody trying to trade flip, but I'm not sure if that went down. Creighton skates, uh love that kid. He uh he had a big front side one eighty. Hell yeah, which was rad. Which was rad.

Yeah, he stuck it a bunch of times and and was like sliding out because the bank was so steep, he just wasn't making it all the way around. We did um we would go up to Charleston to skate like the hanger bowl and all that stuff up there when they would do like the Fourth of July and all Have you been up there recently since they've done they got that under the bridge spot?

But they're they've got a uh a rad crew of Charleston dudes that uh I mean they got some good those Charleston dudes, dude.

That was one of the coolest scenes I've ever seen when I first went up there, and you're like, you go, you meet Hank, you see the hanger, you see the other little bull, and then they're like, Oh, let's go over to so-and-so's house. He's got a tree fort bull. You're like, what? Yeah, you know, and then you go, you go check that out, dude. I got the worst case of chiggers of my life at that tree fort bowl. Really? Like I was skating the bull.

Like you get off of work and he's like chilling in his driveway with Chad Bardy and like Pat Duffy. You're like, whoa, hell yeah. Yeah, you know, like they're they're gonna go fuck around in the pool. Like it's like Roberto Alemont. You know, he's like whoever was coming through, they would always kind of stop by sometimes on their way to Tampa or from Tampa back to somewhere. Hell yeah. People would just hit Peterson up and come skate at the pool.

Like, how was it having this rad pool in your backyard for a few years?

Yeah, it's bringing back memories now, now that I'm like seeing it. Yeah. Um, check out the Ace trucks, dude. Yeah, I know. That's like right kind of when they first started. Yep. Um I remember when I bought this place and it had a pool, but I didn't even realize it. And then I started swimming in it, and I was like, dude, this thing's like like the this part of the deep end where these two photos are was like I don't know, how deep was that, Aaron? Probably eight. Eight, yeah. Yeah, like but it was like mini ramp transition. Yeah, that's what he was saying. It was like the one the one wall was perfect, and then I mean it just like pretty much the only vert was like the tile tile. Yeah. Wow. Now these sides were like the like more pool and shallow end, but this wall was like 10 with them, and then we're doing hairs like yeah, we were getting it on the yeah, going over the death box and stuff. Like, we kind of had it going, but um yeah, it was it was cool because it wasn't uh I mean I drained it and had no idea what I was getting into. Right. And then it just worked out, and this is actually the first year I drained it because I had uh Temple come and resurface it with like a skatable surface. Oh, hell yeah. And then um uh Squirrel came out and did the tile and um Drew did the coping with Turner. Nice, and then it was like it was like pool coping. Oh, yeah, you know. So this is crazy because this is the first time I drained it. And I think you were living next door to me, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Aaron was in my neighborhood. So these are these are some shoes that you gave me. Oh, there you go. Sweet. They're probably those shoes.

You know, we lived in like apartments and stuff, so um, but to have that, it was like it was pretty awesome.
