What if one simple handwritten note could strengthen relationships, open doors, and help people feel truly seen? In this inspiring episode, Linda sits down with communications expert, producer, fundraising consultant, Smithsonian Regional Council board member, and author Erica Gerard Di Bona to discuss the remarkable power of gratitude and the art of writing meaningful thank-you notes.

Erica believes that saying thank you is much more than expressing gratitude. A thoughtful thank-you note tells someone, "I see you. I appreciate you. You matter." While gifts may be forgotten over time, heartfelt words often become treasured keepsakes that people save, frame, and revisit for years.

Many people avoid writing thank-you notes because they feel intimidated by a blank page or worry they won't know what to say. Erica removes that overwhelm with her simple and effective "Me, You, & Us" formula:

Me – Begin by creating a moment in time and describing how you felt when you received the gift, kindness, or gesture. This paragraph often begins with the word when.

You – Shift the focus to the other person. Share something you admire, appreciate, or notice about them. Let them know they are truly seen.

Us – End by looking toward the future and expressing how you'd like to continue the connection or relationship.

Interestingly, Erica rarely begins a letter with the words "thank you." Instead, she saves those words for the closing. Her notes aren't really about the gift—they're about the giver.

During our conversation, Erica shared the story of writing her very first thank-you letter to President John F. Kennedy when she was in first grade. To her surprise, she received a personal response. That simple exchange left a lasting impression and taught her that words matter, people matter, and everyone wants to feel seen and valued.

Erica's book, A Letter Is Better: The Art of Thank You, makes a compelling case for paper, stamps, and sincerity in a world dominated by screens, taps, and swipes. Through personal stories and practical guidance, she demonstrates how thoughtful thank-you notes can strengthen relationships, create opportunities, and foster deeper human connection.

Whether you're looking to improve your relationships, strengthen your network, or simply bring more gratitude into your life, this episode will inspire you to pick up a pen and discover the life-changing power of a handwritten note.
