[00:05:38] Dr. Charles Barr: And a lot of people that have come to see me, by the time they find me and they find CHAANGE, they've already spent thousands of dollars. As a matter of fact, the an NIMH study found that the average person will spend about $6,700, that's six thousand seven hundred dollars, um, before they find something to get better, uh, to help them with their anxiety.
We also found in, in similar studies and in others, that those who do get treatment in the first year, after they've had anxiety, about 71% of them get better. But of the other 38 or 9%, uh, they don't get better in the first year and their recovery rates flatline. And so then, they have a harder time getting better. Um, and some of those biggies might be like, uh, flying on an airplane. You know, it's like, okay. So I, I was afraid to even go out the door and now I'm out driving again, uh, which was also impossible for me to do. But I can drive now, but I can't, I haven't had a chance to take a, a plane trip yet. Um,
[00:12:56] Erica Roth: Working your way up the list.
[00:12:57] Dr. Charles Barr: You're working your way up the list, but you already have experienced freedom that you didn't have before. Freedom from the anxiety feelings and freedom from, uh, the restriction that the agoraphobia causes where you're avoiding doing so many things. And so you see yourself getting on with life again, getting back into life, doing the things that you've been avoiding doing. And, uh, that's an important, uh, thing for you to be doing.
[00:13:31] Erica Roth: Yeah. Real quickly, I just wanted to give an example of working with you for 16 weeks. Your coaching was. Amazing. I should say actually through the program, but the program itself had me, a person who , I don't even even think I've said this on the program before, was getting home from the grocery store, let's say having of grocery bags and going out the gate of the apartment garage and up the stairs and around the way to get to my apartment instead of going from you know, up the elevator. And to my place. So basically what I'm trying to say is I was taking a really long way with a ton of grocery bags because I was too afraid and it seemed like I was never going to get on my own elevator, in my own apartment building until, I think it was week 12 with you, week 11, week 12, or something like that.
I started saying, "great, I get home from the grocery store, I have all these bags, and I get outta my car. I get on the elevator and there's my apartment"
I started taking this everyday route that became like nothing to me. And that's, I mean, I'm not lying when I say that. I was doing some a completely different route 10 weeks earlier, whatever it was.
And then by week 10, it's like, "great, I don't have to carry these groceries. I can get upstairs. It's safer. I'm not going out into the street." Anyways, so I just wanted to give
[00:14:58] Dr. Charles Barr: Which is really,
[00:14:59] Erica Roth: think I've ever shared that
[00:15:00] Dr. Charles Barr: but, but that's really a phenomenal change for you, and that's the kind of change, that's the kind of change we're talking about. It's like, okay, week 10 you weren't cured. but look at the big shift that happened and the big change that you were then able to do, to free up your life and to not have to take the long way around and not feel scared, uh, at at riding in your own elevator, in your own building. That's, that's, that's the
kind of change that we're, that we're hoping other people will take advantage of and be able to accomplish. And we fully believe that those are things that are accomplishable.
[00:15:44] Erica Roth: Well, let's see how CHAANGE works.
[00:15:47] How CHAANGE works and the Get Better Guarntee
[00:15:47] Erica Roth: We've got, um, a couple things to break down for you so that you can kind of understand. We know we just say we have a program and, Dr. Barr always explains it as a mix of relaxation with cognitive therapy, but it's done in a very specific way. How much time we want you putting into it is specific. The whole time you're doing any of this, you're incorporating cognitive therapy and relaxation. We're not gonna ask you to get in the car when you're not ready to drive. We, we don't work in like, um, uh, that kind of, what's it called way, Dr. Barr? When, um, like immersion...
[00:16:39] Dr. Charles Barr: That's right. Flooding technique or exposure.
[00:16:43] Erica Roth: Yeah. We don't, We're not doing that. I just want everyone to know, 'cause I, I realize we've never said that before. Um, we're not gonna do anything scary, because as an anxiety person, we know you're thinking like, I was thinking, what, what are you gonna ask me to do? So we're not gonna ask you to do anything until you're ready. I just want that said.
[00:17:00] Dr. Charles Barr: That's right. And so our job is to encourage you, get you ready, and then encourage you to go ahead and take the step. It's still gonna be a little bit of a scary step, even if you're ready, because you haven't done it in so long. Um, I remember when you and I rode the elevator in my building, I fully, fully felt like you were ready to do that.
[00:17:25] Erica Roth: I didn't.
Mm-Hmm
[00:17:28] Dr. Charles Barr: You know, still gonna be scary to do it even when you're and did it, you had a fantastic success.
[00:17:36] Erica Roth: Yes. And I think that I also was scared, but I also wanna add in was my body less scared than 16 weeks ago. Heck yes. I wouldn't have even walked up to the elevator 16 weeks ago, like this was, "okay, this is gonna be a new thing to do. Let's see how I'm gonna take it." But once I got in and tried it, after 16 weeks of preparing my mind and body, my body and mind did not panic.
And that was the difference. I was actually ready, even though I couldn't tell. So that's the difference. We're not gonna, you know, have you do it while you're still like, "oh my gosh, I'm just miserable. Don't get me near it." No, that's not the point of this. That's not, you know, how we're not gonna do anything terrible like that.
Um, and real, real quickly, what about CHAANGE groups? Um, well, Dr. Barr's run 'em before these are even more effective.
[00:18:29] Dr. Charles Barr: CHAANGE groups are very effective. That's rIght.
[00:18:32] Erica Roth: And I'm sure anybody knows that's true just from joining any group setting and any lecture or you know, anything they've done before.
[00:18:39] Dr. Charles Barr: Well, I was gonna say, um, the, the ironic thing about change groups is people get better and leave. Um,

[00:18:57] Erica Roth: So they're not clients!.
[00:18:57] Dr. Charles Barr: They're not clients anymore. Now, I might, I might hear
from one or two of them, later on in life. Um, but they, they got better. They left. They're not seeing me weekly. They're not stuck in therapy forever. Uh, we really do want this to be, you're, you're in treatment for 16 weeks. You're learning how to do this differently and to defeat anxiety and to live life without scaring yourself.
