Have you ever found yourself asking what does God want me to do with my life, or what should I do in this particular situation? Maybe you've prayed for God to give you a clear answer. You've searched the Bible or just felt stuck, waiting for clarity. Well, you're not alone. This is one of the most common questions Christians wrestle with. Here's the good news God's will isn't some hidden treasure that we have to find and then dig up. So in today's episode, we're going to explore what Scripture says about discerning God's will and uncover practical steps that you can take to walk confidently in God's plan for your life. So let's dive in. Hi friends.
Speaker 1:First let's define what we mean by God's will. There are three primary aspects of God's will. The first one is God's sovereign will. This is his ultimate plan for creation, his control over everything. Ephesians 1.11 reminds us that he works all things according to the counsel of his will. Secondly, it's God's moral will. It's another type of his will. God's moral will, this is his desire for how we live our lives, and Micah 6.8 says it very plainly where it says he has told you, o man, what is good and what does God require of you, but to do justice you, but to do justice, to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. The third aspect of God's will is God's specific will. Now, this is what most of us have questions about. What does God want from me personally, my job, my relationships, ministry and more? But here's a crucial point ministry and more, but here's a crucial point, god's will isn't always a mysterious, secret plan we're waiting to discover. It starts with what he's already revealed in his word.
Speaker 1:So, to start things off, let's look at what scripture teaches us about God's will. First of all, god's general will is clear. He wants all people to come to salvation. That's one thing we know about God. 1 Timothy 2.4 says God desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. We also know that he calls us to sanctification. 1 Thessalonians 4.3 says for this is the will of God your sanctification. God wants us to draw closer to him and to know him more by seeing our lives becoming more and more sanctified.
Speaker 1:Now, renewing your mind is key. In Romans 12, 2, it says Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is His good, pleasing and perfect will. We also know that God speaks through his word. Psalm 119, 105 reminds us that his word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. So what does all this mean?
Speaker 1:Well, if you want to know God's will, we have to immerse ourselves in Scripture. It's where he reveals His heart and His plan for His people. Remember, we live in a world that is against God. If we are grounded in the Bible and God's Word, we will be more in tune with His will, not influenced by the world. We all know that the world has heavily influenced the way we think and what we do and how we function in life, so it's so much more important now than ever. It's always been important, but I think now more than ever, because the world we're seeing is just caving in on Christian values. We're seeing is just caving in on Christian values, and so to know God's will and to read his word is to help us draw closer to him, so that we understand and know his voice much more clear. All right, so now let's get practical.
Speaker 1:Here are four steps to help you discern God's will. First of all, pray for guidance. Philippians 4, 6, and 7 tells us to bring everything to God in prayer. Specifically, it says do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, present your request to God, and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds. In Christ Jesus, practically when we pray, we're not just asking for answers, we're asking for peace and alignment with his heart. Again, we go back to knowing God more, enables us to hear him more clearly.
Speaker 1:Number two seek wise counsel. Proverbs 15.22 says plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisors they succeed. We need to surround ourselves with mature Christians who can help see clearly when our emotions and our own personal desires cloud our judgment. This is so easy to do. Again, we live in the world. We know we're not of the world but man. It's hard sometimes when we have to follow the world's rules, in the sense that we have to work and we have to do all these things. We have to obey the laws and all those things that God has ordained others to create. But all of that needs to be submissive to God's general will. So, again, by reading God's Word and knowing what he has, the big picture, has in store for all of us in the world. We're going to hear from him much more clear.
Speaker 1:Three pay attention to opportunities and gifts. First, peter 4.10 encourages us to use our gifts for God's glory, and it says each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others as faithful stewards of God's grace is revealed through the doors he opens or closes, but again, we need to be very attentive to his timing and his direction. I think a lot of times we put the blame on others, or even the enemy, and say you know, I'm being blocked from hearing God's will. But really that comes back to us and we need to know His voice. It says in Scripture too, that the sheep will know the shepherd's voice. Well, we won't know it if we're not in tune to God's Word. If we're not hearing from Him and knowing what he wants from each of us individually, then we're not going to hear His voice very clearly. So, being around surrounding ourselves with mature Christians who can guide us, and then also just being attentive to opportunities of doors that open and doors that close.
Speaker 1:Number four avoid false discernment. Man, this is a big one. Sometimes we can convince ourselves that what we want is what God wants. Can anybody relate to that? I know I can. Isaiah 55, 8, and 9 reminds us. It says For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways. My ways, declares the Lord, as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Speaker 1:This is a really hard one, because we can cherry pick from Scripture to justify the things that we desire, or we can misinterpret random signs as confirmation from God. But it's so important to truly listen to God rather than pursuing what feels easiest or most convenient. If we want something bad enough and we see this in the false gospel and all types of things I won't get into that I could open up another can of worms. But if we want something bad enough, we can search for Scripture and find a Scripture or even just part of a Scripture that can line up with what we want, so that it says exactly what we want it to say. But in the context of even just a few Scriptures before it, it completely loses its meaning. As far as what we're trying to make it say, we have to know the Scripture in its whole.
Speaker 1:How are we handling uncertainty? Even when we follow these steps. We know that there are going to be times of uncertainty, so how do we handle that? I know that I've been in times where I've asked God to show me the way. I just earnestly want to know the way, and he seems silent. So how do we deal with that? Well, first of all, we need to understand that waiting is often a part of God's will. Isaiah 40, 31 promises but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not be faint.
Speaker 1:Two, we can trust in God's character, not just His plan. There's a scripture I memorized a long time ago from Romans 8.28, and that scripture reassures us exactly what we're talking about. And it says and we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to his purpose. If we trust in God, no matter what our circumstances, no matter how long we have to wait, or if we don't hear clearly, we know that God still has a plan. We can be assured of that. We need to rest in his character. And third, we need to be obedient in the present. We can get so wrapped up in things that are going on and looking for direction that we forget about what's going on right now. Luke 16 10 reminds us that whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. So remember to focus on being faithful today, and God will lead you into his bigger plans.
Speaker 1:Finally, god's will for your life. Just remember, it's not something you have to strive to uncover. Sometimes it seems that way, but it starts with knowing Him, with trusting His Word and with walking in obedience to do what he's already revealed to us. So let me ask you this what's one step you'll take today to align your life with God's will? Maybe it's spending more time in prayer, seeking wise counsel, or simply just trusting him with a decision that you've been hesitant about.
Speaker 1:I know that in the past I have made wrong choices, assuming it's God's will, and I've also walked through open doors that I felt very clearly were God. Sometimes I was right, sometimes I was wrong, but one thing I also know is that when we are seeking God with all of our hearts, even when we make mistakes, he's there to pick us up and dust us off and move us on. Making a wrong choice or wrong decisions is not the end of the world. God knows us better than we know ourselves. So be patient with yourself and if you want to know God's will for your life, grow closer to Him.
