Hey lady, welcome to Confessions of a surf lady, a podcast by the surf society. For so long, women have been misrepresented by the surf industry, only highlighting a narrow and exclusive version of a who a surf lady can be. But you and I both know that there is so much more to women surfing than that this, this podcast right here, is a place to tell our story how we want to tell it, at Confessions of a surf lady. You'll meet everyday surf ladies doing amazing things in their local communities, as well as pros, World Champs, big wave riders and badass, living legends from women's surf history, all sharing their stoke on this blossoming Global Women's surf culture. What's even more special, though, is that you, yes, you will get a chance to participate in the conversation by leaving me your confessions. I'm your host, Laura Day. Think of me as your new favorite surf sister, connecting you to your beautiful Global Women's surf community, helping you boost your confidence before you head out for your next surf, and even dropping a few surf tips from the surf society along the way. That's s, u, r, F, S, O, C, i, e, t, e, there you'll find a handful of free resources to help you through your surfing journey. All right, lady, thanks again for joining me here at Confessions of a surf lady, where we're cultivating a global women's surf culture through thoughtful conversation. Let's get to our episode. Yeah, five years ago, on January 15, 2020, we launched this podcast. We launched this podcast with the intention of telling authentic stories of women who surf because I really felt, and I know a lot of women also felt, that we were being misrepresented more than 60 episodes later, and 50,000 downloads and counting were still telling that story. Hey, lady, I'm your host. Laura Day, Welcome to season six of Confessions of a surf. Lady, I am just as stoked to have you here, as I was on the first day, the first launch in 2020 you were such an important part of the story, as a listener and as somebody that has soaked up the episodes, connected with the women on the show, felt empowered by anybody's stories and took that out with you to the lineup. And I just want to tell you thank you so much for tuning in and listening and being here five years later, I want to take a moment to really celebrate that, because you partaking in this episode just by listening, just by making space for this beautiful women's surfing community, really uplifts the vibe of the lineup out there. You might not realize it, but it does you empowering yourself by sharing your story and listening to others makes the lineup a better place, and I am stoked to share it with you. So really, my heartfelt thank you goes out to you. Thank you so much for tuning in and listening to Confessions of a surf lady. We are, like I always say, just getting started, and it's really exciting. Like I mentioned, this podcast started in 2020 and I literally started it recording with the cheapest mic I could find, sitting under a blanket. Thankfully, some of these microphones have become a lot more affordable and a lot better, and so I don't have to sit under a blanket anymore. I can sit here at my desk, not in a studio in it or anything. But I've really done this whole podcast out of my home up until recently, with our new sponsors coming on board, like dip and a few sponsors. They'll be joining us here in the future, I have pretty much produced this episode out of my pocket. I've put in the time and the money with zero podcasting expertise. Mind you, at all, especially at the beginning, I was not a Podcast Producer. I just was somebody that wanted to tell a story. And so here we are now, five years later, just moving in different ways and growing in different ways that are really exciting. What's still really important, though, is you the listener, and there are a few ways that you can support the show that would mean so much to me, and really would help us keep growing as a podcast, and help us keep telling these stories, and not even that, just that, just expand the amount of content that we can create that's really genuine and authentic. So one of the first ways that you can support this show is to become a member of the surf society. You've heard me talk about the surf society. It is our digital women's surfing community where we get together to learn more, surf better and live happy. And this community is actually. Inspired by this podcast. This podcast had created such a community in my DMs, in Instagram. From Instagram, I just got so many messages from you listeners that I was connecting with you, that I wanted to have a place where you guys could connect with each other, and in trying to figure out what I wanted for this space, this community space. I talked to a lot of women and asked like, what do you want out of a community? And of course, everybody wants to get better at surfing. So through kind of just figuring out what the surf society was going to be, it became this amazing digital space. And actually, we do stuff in person too, where we get together, and I invite on industry mentors, experts. Some of the women in our membership are actually experts in their field, and like sports psychology or sports rehab, different things that they bring to the table, but we put on events and workshops and challenges that are all there to help you become a better surfer. I also invite on mentors that I connect with. I think mentorship in surfing is really the cultural way to get better at surfing. I mean, you can like read books, you can watch YouTube videos, but really the way people got better at surfing in the past was they had a mentor. They had somebody that grew up surfing and was able to pass down that knowledge for somebody like me who's not a generational surfer. I always felt there was that missing link, right? So this surf society is a place that you can come to meet those like grandmas and grandpas of surfing you never had. I love to bring on people who love to share their knowledge. So that's the first way, if you want to support the making of this content, to become a member there. And you know, you get so much out of it. It really is a beautiful space. It was inspired by you and this podcast. And I promise, if you love here, tuning into this, it is something you will absolutely love and it's just a very female centric way to become a better surfer, very cultural way. And I love it. It's such a beautiful space. I'll put a link in the show notes for you if you want to try it out for free. Another way to support this show is we do have a shop. It's shop.surfsociety.com I have products on there that I had had from when I started the podcast Ira surf. Those are surf wear rash guards, bikini bottoms, T shirts, that's all there, and a couple of products from the podcast. That's a way that always comes back to us and also supporting our sponsors. So if you ever hear an episode here and there's a product that you like, you love the story, you know, Kate's story about creating dip, or Emily's story about creating peach surf hats on anybody else in the future that you hear, I mean, you should know I like really, really take my time to choose the people that we work with, and it makes it more difficult. A lot of times, those brands are smaller brands, and their sponsorships aren't, like, really big sponsorships or anything, but it is support. And I am really passionate about aligning myself and aligning our podcast and our community with people who, like, really are genuine, authentic and care. And I mean, that's just another way to support us. If you support them, it really comes back to us in just different ways, whether it's financial to help run the podcast or energetic wise, that's all that matters. But yeah, supporting our sponsors is like a really great way to support the show as well. So I know those are all kind of like monetary things, and absolutely, I won't be shy about it. It does, you know, cost money to run this show. It costs resources to run this show. And we want to grow this show so that we can get it out, and get that message out, and share more authentic stories with women who serve but the last couple of things you can do to support the show is to leave a review. Whatever platform you're on. Leaving us a review just shows that people love it, and that when people stumble upon it, they're like, Hey, okay, people have this review that love this show, I'm gonna give it a shot. So leaving a review, you can leave a message in there too. I love to see those, and it's just a super easy way and doesn't cost anything to support the show. And last is share the show with a friend. Put it on Instagram. You can take a snapshot. You can tell a friend about it when you go out for your next surf. Those connections, those in person, connections, are so important to our growing community, and you being a part of confessions of surf lady is so important, and you are part of like, just this, what I call a blossoming woman's surf culture. And I am so grateful to have you here. Okay, so I want us to get on to our launch of the sixth season, so I won't hold you for much longer. It's. Thank you so much for being a listener here at Confessions of a surf lady. We are not going anywhere anytime soon. And I always say, I think I said this last year, like we're just hitting our stride, like I said, I was not a Podcast Producer when I started this, but apparently I have become one, and I now know how to run a podcast. And for that, it's going to be like a really great season, and we're going to be going in a really great direction. So thank you so much happy sixth season and the ways that you can support us. Join the surf society. I would love to see you there shop at our shop, which is shop.surfsociety.com Support our sponsors, because they support us and thus support you in the women's surfing community, leave a review Spotify Apple, wherever it is you like to listen and share with a friend. Last note, one of our main goals this year is to reach 100,000 downloads. So those reviews and shares with a friend are so helpful and they're free, right? Let's move on to the launch of season six of Confessions of a surf. Lady, I'll see you on our next episode. All right.
