Picture that mountain, steep and silent, where Jesus' garments turned dazzling white in the transfiguration. James was there, heart pounding, as the veil lifted for a glorious instant to reveal the Lord's divinity, in the hush of Gethsemane. When Jesus's sweat fell like drops of blood. In the night, James watched and prayed, tasting the mystery of sorrow and steadfast friendship. It was not only Jesus' miracles that James saw firsthand, but also his agonies and intimate joys. He beheld the daughter of Jairus rise at Jesus' touch. He listened as the Lord spoke, with Moses and Elijah, connecting the old prophecies with his own mission. James was called to a deeper track, a path strewn with both splendor and suffering. This privileged place brought not privilege for privilege's sake, but the invitation to bear witness. The Lord trusted James with his most vulnerable hours, forming in him the courage that, years later, would be required for martyrdom. Against all human hope, life surged back into her small frame and grief turned to overwhelming joy. In that household miracle, Saint James is quietly shaped by Christ's pattern, glory on the mountaintop, compassion and restoration in the hidden places of suffering. It is through these moments, on the mountain of the transfiguration, and in the intimate miracle, by Jairus's daughter's bedside, that St. James encounters the living mystery of the faith. As pilgrims today trace his steps, we are invited to marvel alongside him, in every Eucharist, in the Rosary's mysteries, in the saints' stories, the glory of Christ breaks forth and his healing touch reaches us, calling us to rise and follow him anew.
