Speaker 1:

[inaudible].

Speaker 3:

Good day and welcome to the second episode of the all the gear button. No idea. Podcast with your host as always, roadie and Andes. How are you[inaudible] good, thanks mate. Good. How are you? Well, how can they know a few sparklings[inaudible] the state's finest for do out for the, for the episode today. Yeah, I'm good. I'm good. What are what we have for you today? We have the oranges and lemons as always, bit of fishing news and a fishing report. A dizzy. You're going to answer the five questions?

Speaker 4:

Yes. Yep. I'll, uh, I'll give you some of my best memories and whatnot. I'm not sure they'll live up to Stewart Boyd, but that's all right.

Speaker 3:

Yep. You mentioned, boy, we've got Boyd Sparrow. He will be a great guest.

Speaker 4:

He will. He had some great yarns. He's a good man down, uh, works in the Christies beach region. Similar to myself. What a great man he was.

Speaker 3:

Yup. So we'll hear from him about his win in the, we're in a tuner comp and also he's very popular vending machines that are popping up all over the state. We'll also have a bit of a weekend wrap up from the long weekend. How we went on the uh, on the fishing and after rave reviews from last week. Joke of the week,

Speaker 4:

we'll be back. Yes. I'm going to deliver some better, better banter than you did last week night, that's for sure. Guys, I want to thank you very much for all of your, uh, follows and likes on Facebook and Instagram. Really appreciate it. We're going to have some good gay coming your way. So get among[inaudible],

Speaker 3:

keep it going and share with your friends. It's only going up from here guys. Alright, let's um, hook into oranges and lemons. Roadie. What do you reckon? Alright. My orange for the week was getting down to the Southeast bit of a dive and a couple of couple of Cray Cutler abs

Speaker 4:

with the boys. Yeah, we're going to talk about that later. So I look forward to hearing here in a few yarns about that. What about the lemon

Speaker 3:

and the lemon was the coronavirus more specifically, our merchandise is delayed. Shocking news. These Chinese factories are not quite at their best and the merchant you've all been waiting for is on delay.

Speaker 4:

It's not good. Not good. Yeah. Well my orange this week was a yesterday, had a few beers at the oyster bar, got into a few Kilpatrick oysters that went down and absolute trait, ducked into the fringe and watched a band. Oh man. He's a great, great comedy act. Slash. Rapper. He's bloody, really good for. And my lemon was having to, well except for last night and having to work all weekend so I couldn't get out on the boat. So that was a real shame.

Speaker 3:

Beautiful, bad luck. And I caught all the fish for you. So that's all good. Nothing new this weekend on that front. All right. We thought we'll ask the five quick questions of ourselves over the next couple of weeks so you guys can get to know us. D is tell us about your best fish.

Speaker 4:

Well, we're already the best fish by far. It was when we got onto the tuner off KPI. That was just the day of old days. We had few Sangs throughout there. You and I were off uh, the North coast of Kai out bit paler Stokes Bay where we stage here and we're going to elaborate a bit more next week in the episode when we do our KPI edition. That'll be real hope for you guys out there. But um, yeah, it was a really good day. Got out there, saw some bait, dropped the lowers across, started telling them around nothing for a good half an hour to an hour and we just kept heading further down the Island, heading towards snub Cove, got to Western river and it was just going crazy. There were birds working everywhere. The bait, we're going not where we're just in our element, although we had no idea what you're doing. First time ever been out there. Hugh was just loving it, like he was frothing unbelievably. And uh, all of a sudden, bang, your rod was on and we were going for it. And we are hooked into two or three hours.

Speaker 3:

Was that day, wasn't it? Three, three that first day. And I think they all on, uh,[inaudible] pacemaker Louis, I'll shout out to those folks that will lower did the bloody goods on that.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, the pace Megan did really well that whole trip. They were definitely fading on some similar size bait that year, I reckon. So we really got to match the hatch. You do, you have to match the hash. That's exactly right. But that was definitely my best fish. It was a really good trip and certainly good to get on the tuner there, that's for sure. What about your favorite thing about fishing? Big man? Ah, ma, I, um, I'm gonna meet with stew on this, that it's just pretty much everything, but certainly the highlight of the times that we spend out on the boat fishing is definitely just the banter that you can get amongst with your friends always. Uh, plenty of time to sit there and have a few good yards. There's always something going on. You're in the great outdoors. You can forget about everything that's going on at work and all that stuff. So it's really good to be out there on the boat. Good. Hi. Grey. What about your office fishing memory or what got you into fishing? I reckon my first star real fishing memory was when, um, dad and his mate bill where you went down and launched the boats off. Pondi got out to all forts and just had a really cracking session on the snapper and Nana guy. We had a really good day out there and I was even lucky enough as a real young man, I was probably about 10 or 11 at the time and just who didn't know, a big blue more warm. It was really taken drag and I didn't even bloody know what was going on. I was just having a great time out there, but that was certainly what got me the bargain. Um, yeah, love that part of the world. Bottom of the York peninsula there. Can't wait to eventually get a big enough boat to be out there and smash those all thoughts again one day. Yeah, we'll certainly catch some fish once we get the new boat all year. All right. Favorite sort of fishing and why are I can definitely, my favorite sort of fishing is wiling fishing. It's a great challenge. They are just such good eating as well. We all have our good days and have our bad days, but um, it's really just the thrill of the chase with whining, I reckon.

Speaker 3:

You reckon that's a bit a bit controversial that I always out fish. You and your favorite species. Lowe's chat, mate. Loose chat. You always bring in the red mullet, red mountain, bring up a white ignite. You know that. It's true. It's true. But you normally specialize in the red mallet, the red Malik catching and I just bring home the ting is the, the kidney slap is all right. What about your funniest fishing story?

Speaker 4:

Well, you're a real feature in my funnish funny fishing story. Big man. We were out on the York peninsula fishing away, tucking into a few of the Cooper's sparklings. They were really good and we'd caught a few fish, got a few small snapper, just a few panties. And then, um, yeah, I think it was about time to go in. It was sort of quite cool that night and you just sort of felt like draining the main vein before we, uh, went back in and all of a sudden I've just heard this bloody great big splash coming off the back of the body. I didn't know whether you'd had to just pull it in a big 70 or it sent him in a snapper, but when I saw your headlight sort of duck bottom down near the rocks, I realized you'd bloody falling in. So, um, yeah, let that be a lesson. Don't have too many sparklings on the boat. I'll hit you for six. I say I've never fallen in.

Speaker 3:

I was about to say that's very rich coming from you. I'd seem to remember last time we were on the yacht peninsula. You fell in twice while trying to look at the Botox when we had some buddy shoes. Right. This is my week. Anyway. Let's keep moving.

Speaker 4:

Good stuff. All right. Well we're gonna move on today into the fishing report. So roadie, where have they been biting and what's happening around the state?

Speaker 3:

Yep. Mulloway West lakes and the port river, certainly they're putting in a lot of hours to get their rewards, but that's my wife fishing for you. But the fish are there for those that are putting in the hours.

Speaker 4:

Mmm Hmm. And we'll assume crabs. Yeah. Where are they getting them at?

Speaker 3:

I've heard over your peninsula on both sides of the peninsula, sort of around your Ardrossan port Vincent area and over on Wallaroo way as well. So I'll put your opinion shell for the police. Rumors

Speaker 4:

still going strong, aren't they? They do say any month with an Aww in it is where you get them guys. But definitely they're hot this time. Yeah.

Speaker 3:

So March and April keep getting them and then they might go off according to Roy. Yeah. Yeah. What about a tuna? Does, where are they?

Speaker 4:

Well, there's certainly, I'm pretty consistent. I'm still hearing good reports off Victor Harbor. We obviously know Boyd's going to tell us a bit more about his[inaudible] later today. They're still getting them there. They're really getting some bigger fish down towards port Mac. You are down that way. I'm hearing some good stories. Weren't you a big man?

Speaker 3:

Yeah. Port Mac and just across the border into Victoria seem to be where the bigger fish are at the moment. So keep your eye out if you're down that way. Yeah. I've also heard of some big fish on the air peninsula and a few Samson fish thrown in the mix for good measure.

Speaker 4:

You beauty. There's rat King

Speaker 3:

all over the place. All over the Southern coast isn't there already. Yeah, I mean they've been getting a few other spear fishing as well, which should be good fun. Never done that. But uh, love to get a key or a spirit and we'll, yeah, that would be good. Well Rena at second Valley rapid Bay, a hot on the squid at the moment and some big squid too. From what I've seen. They're always pretty trustworthy sites, aren't they? Yeah. You can't go too wrong around Marina fee for your squid and King George widen ain't been hearing some good things over on kangaroo Island. Amy Bay King's cone Island beach consistently good size catches. Okay. Talked about the Southeast. I was down there over the weekend and certainly plenty of people had positive things to say about the Cray fishing to spot a coronavirus dropping prices as we are about, but the records are getting them diving and parts port, Mac beach port and robe.

Speaker 4:

Very good. And give us a bit of a fresh water update. Are we saying Cod Calla silver perch? What's happening? Where are they biting?

Speaker 3:

Caught a mix through the Murray from what I hear, but the Calip and silver perch from the Warren

Speaker 4:

reservoir, which is really good to say. We've been saying some stuff on Facebook, haven't we? Rec fish essay doing some great work. They have the uh, the work they've been putting on seems to be paying off with the natives come and good in those reservoirs. Fantastic to have that either land option when you can't get off shore isn't, it certainly gives you some more options when the weather's not playing the game for the boat fishing. It's definitely what you need. All right, well that wraps up the fishing report this week guys. Where I'm going to make sure that we keep hearing reports about our friends around the place who are catching fish. And we won't get too many from you roadie cause it's very rare you get onto a mate. But uh, that's all right. We're going to keep it going. What about the fishing news? What's happening around the place mate?

Speaker 3:

Yup. So we talked about last week the new oyster reef off the metropolitan coast voting is closed for that. So we're awaiting the outcome of that vote. And for location to be announced, construction is expected to be done by late 2020s. They're going to have to get a move on with that. Do we know that they're announcing it now? I'm not sure it's coming around here. So I think we are from that in the next couple of weeks. So I'll keep you updated. Yeah, we look forward.

Speaker 4:

They were like where they settle on for that, that's for sure. And now mate, you're the crayfish expert. Tell us what's going on in that part of the,

Speaker 3:

yeah, so the low prices are continuing with coronavirus impacting on the Chinese market. So 50 or 60 bucks. Akilah I've been hearing, uh, you were also telling me you've done a bit of reading. Tell us about the grant that's going on down there. 50 or 60 bucks a, I've heard bloody toilet rolls go for more. Well, I listen to Boyd in the last episode. You don't need toilet rolls, mate. Yeah, that was stupid. I'll, I'll let you go.

Speaker 4:

$348,000 grant. They have the, the South Australian government have come to the party as part of a regional growth fund. They've delivered 348 grand that's going to support the South East rock lobster co-op. It's been formed by 25 local fishing families. They've all got together, created a group and they're going to receive that money so that they can develop a new processing facility in beach port.

Speaker 3:

We, uh, really expect that this is just going to continue to grow the market down there. Don't be ready. Yeah. Certainly once the SA Corona virus business blows over the Southern rock lobster fishery back bigger and better than ever. I mean they're talking in increase of 10 tons in terms of their holding capacity. That's gotta be a good thing for the, for the region down there. It doesn't, it certainly does. In that same region. We've also been keeping an eye on the tuna pokes on the uh, on the app. You can watch where they, where they get around and they are all down at, tell us about that.[inaudible] yeah, we'll have located there, haven't they? Yeah, they have so dealing around and they're blaming that on the seismic testing and the greatest Cheyenne in, so they're looking for oil grounds out there, which has been quite controversial, but that is believed to have affected the tuneup migration patterns so there's not consistent. And our schools out Portland can way, so the boats have come across the road, they're going to catch the fish, take them back to port Lincoln to farmer. You have to wonder what that's going to do for the port Lincoln region. Don't yet. If that continues well yet certainly will bad are positive for the Southeast. I was here in the supermarkets and everything down at roadway are very happy that the fishermen are coming in and stocking up. So where there's a toilet paper sounds, I'm not sure there's any left down there, but[inaudible]

Speaker 4:

sanitizes mosques, it's going nuts. If he's going nuts, the world's going nuts. The toilet paper, the Bible. I've seen your stash in the shed mate. You're one of those Nazis in the supermarket getting amongst 15 roles, punching on with other people trying to get one bag. It's just ludicrous.

Speaker 3:

There is nothing wrong with some good doomsday prep and does you know that but are they are still back on topic. They are still going to drag the tuner back to port Lincoln because there is no deep bays in the Southeast. Portland can has a unique combination of deep water plus protection from the weather. So that'd be an expensive journey I reckon though. Chill a bit of fuel dragging all those junior art cross. Yeah, they will and that'll be really interesting to see what happens the next few years with those migration patterns changing. We'll be certainly be wanting to keep an eye on, that's for sure. We'll keep you updated guys. All right, let's move on. The brim master South Australia Savage gear, round one West lakes. What's happening? We're hearing change of dates. That was June to be on February 16th which was changed due to a charity event clashing at the venue down at West Lake, so it's now March 15 they're expecting over 150 kayakers, so that'll be AR. Oh yeah. Be a good event just around the corner to keep your eye on guys. That'll be very good. I'm sure that I'll smash him in there. We've had a few good days on the brim down in West lakes. Grew up down there. Yep. You're the local. I'm certainly not an expert in brim fishing by any means. Never really got into kayak fishing, but I'm sure they'll do well. Well down there. We've seen some good photos of some big ones coming in. Certainly have now. That's it for the fishing news. Let's hear from Boyd. Let's hear from him. The great man. Alright, welcome Boyd Sparrow, owner and operator of how's your tackle vending machines and tackle and bait and also runs the let's go fishing tackle store. Boyd, welcome. Thanks guys. Cheers for being on the show. Boyd, looking forward to hearing your thoughts on a few things today. Roadie hit board with the first of the regular questions or our Boyd, can you tell us about your best fish

Speaker 5:

catfish? Uh, I'd probably say one of the best fish I've ever had was probably in the Gulf of Mexico. Um, I call it a Stripe Marlin. That was about 160 pounds and that two and a half meters long. So she was not massive, but it was good fun. Um, and uh, it was on the first game fish. I have a court, so it was a good start to kick it off with.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, that sounds very impressive. What good fight was it?

Speaker 5:

Yeah. Yeah. And I was a half asleep and I took off too, so I popped the jump on me. It's been a long time trying to retrain what it took.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, I'll bet. Oh bet boy. Uh, what about your favorite thing about fishing, mate?

Speaker 5:

It's fun. It's funny. Um, you know, um, uh, welcome to last week I would've just said the fact that it's free and then most people can give it a crack and learning and gate doing it. But, um, I guess my favorite thing is watching people fish too. Like I'm up on the weekend. Uh, we did some fishing and you know, I was having just as much fun catching the fish as I won't get enough others onto the fish. So I guess, you know, just the whole experience of getting out on the water and making sure someone gets something in their hands, cause it doesn't matter whether you're five or 60, you catch yourself in us fish and you're stuck and everyone's like with you.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, for sure. That's good times on the boat. Doesn't matter whether you're catching fish or not, it's better than being in the office. Hey. All right. Apart from that bar, when you caught Boyd, what's your first fishing memory or why did you get into, how'd you get into fishing?

Speaker 5:

Yeah. Oh, that's why my grandpa got me into fishing. Um, my grandpa has always been a bit of a fish on the, on the Murray and employees had bites. And my family's always been on the opening show around corny points. So we've grown up in the partying, Trista launch, you probably go out get you crazy. Um, but yeah, I probably, I remember that the most part, the trips coming up to the river and my grandpa was my brother, my little brother. And uh, we, we don't stay out there for three to five days on the Mario. I'd be awake Curry and uh, yeah. You know, I wake up in the morning and you stop pulling in fish and you're pulling in, you know, big caught and you're only a little fella and you pull the in 30, 40 pound Cod. Um, yeah, it's probably one of the first memories I have a fishing actually.

Speaker 3:

Yeah. Fantastic. That's really good. And would that be a favorite sort of fishing boy, do you reckon on the river or what's your, what's your favorite thing at the minute?

Speaker 5:

Oh, look, uh, I'm, I'm pretty, uh, I'm pretty much a light DC show. Um, and so anything that I can set and forget, I kind of like, but then also don't have the patience a the side that seems to be a bit of a negative side of it. But look, I'm pretty happy as long as um, something's happening, I'm all good. Doesn't matter where I am, whether I'm on the river or whether on the ocean, it doesn't really matter. That may as long as the official body.

Speaker 3:

Yup. Good. We're all happy with a, with a exciting session. What about your funniest fishing story or tell us about the one that got away

Speaker 5:

[inaudible] so I was curious of one of those causes a bit of a magnet for funny stories, but um, yeah. Um, probably, I don't know if it's funny, but it's just a constant example of how my fishing trips normally go was I went up to Sasha up in open tip and my brother a couple of years ago and uh, I'll, South Australians like to have a bit of a laugh and Laracon uh, yeah. It's sort of motto to everything. And we got on this like a, this bite. We hired this guy to take us out in the park, not per se a chowder or probably more like a guy who come to take fishing and uh, they said all we're going to get some lobbies. So we went out and we threw the net in and we didn't really know who we're doing, but United first cast, perfect network release. So looks like we know what we're doing and uh, not a whole heap of lobbies. And then we're asking the guy, you know, what's, um, what's the biggest kingfish let's start the biggest Queenie and the biggest GTA you get up here and he's signing off. You rarely correct the beta mocks. So your Queenie spot, you know, sometimes you do get them. And uh, and on that, you know, brother-in-law straight away have a chance, I'll, I'm going to catch a Maitri today. So the guy ready on the right foot was thinking of this, then they're not going to catch anything. And, uh, sure enough, we both put our lobbies on first fish guys down. Um, I cracked and made a wine with the first fish with acquainted.

Speaker 3:

Oh, you're kidding.

Speaker 5:

My brother cracks. I made a three with his,

Speaker 3:

Oh,

Speaker 5:

and this guy standing there looking at us going, okay,

Speaker 3:

so you immediately looks like your New York you were doing then, well

Speaker 5:

it was three for two. We figured that that didn't make a fool of[inaudible]. She was amazed, acquainted that we just told him we were going to catch. Um, so yeah, we use overbites out. We're catching JTS and Queenie's old Mormon. And then, uh, the guy said to us, uh, you know, what do you want to do with these fish? And we said, well wait, don't need fish. Right. So you do what you want with them. So he was starting because they're going to get the case to catch and it's all bull. And the two big made acquaint, he's in his last time going UPT and then we ran out of fish at about 11 o'clock. And you're not going to drive all the way back to get lobbies. So my brother had this idea, which is, well, let's just talk up the cleanings. So I would wait from what's going on to the, um, the quaney we've grabbed it, hooked it in and was trying to straight out as a lobby. And, uh, within about 30 seconds, the lawn just took off. And, uh, and basically we just got Vietnam and we thought, Oh, it must have had a shell. Combalt so we looked at the guy and said, well, we want the other Queenie. He wasn't saying, I think that losing his dinner, I'm sure love it. It's just like, you've just ruined one fish now you want another, so, well, it's all fish. So he gave him sufficient, he hooked it in and we threw it out. And next minute we call it this, this monster. Some Spanish macro gets bitten off by a shark at all these big Spanish Mack patrolling around. So it's taking the whole queen and it was monstrous, uh, like, um, it's easily, you know, am probably looking somewhere around 40 kilo. Like just, you could pick your head inside of it and just go. And if you've ever seen Spanish macro, they got massive tape. Yes. And like it looks like a human said, I'm always in there. And uh, so we brought it in and this car is like, Oh, this is even better without credit from the, to a macro. So this car is so happy is carving out the macro, cause he didn't want us to do anything with that and he starts throwing the Phillips into his lot of tank. And sure enough the Kuwaiti one I can take[inaudible]. And so he's kept his Queenie and he's got his macro sealers now. And then about 20 minutes. Could I possibly lie? Well we got, we don't have any pipe. We've turned around and said, can we have some of the macro bag? So we've got the macro fillets out and trying that out and call it a black tea ratio, about six, seven foot. So, um, that's probably sort of a long winded story, but it's a classic example. It's from small fish, the big fish, the big fish, the biggest fish. Um, and uh, it's one of those things to be there. Any fish. I just look at a fish and I'd say bait.

Speaker 4:

Yeah. What an amazing day out in the water. That would have been. Yeah. Unreal. Oh, well thanks for answering those. Uh, five regular questions. Boy, let's move on to the, we're in a tuner comp. Tell us a bit about it night. Did you have a good weekend? Yeah, obviously took the Biki so that was great.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, it was actually, yeah, it was actually really good. Um, I uh, a cheer to fish with a couple of lads and one pulled out, um, earlier in the week and the other one got Bromley. You um, will seek on the, on the thought. I know I saw I was already down there sufficiently comp and uh, was I was pretty man down by that point so I wasn't going to get the boat in the water. Um, and then two are called Franco, some announce of my cross for help and rocked up at four o'clock of the ramp so we could head out. But um, no, it was good day. We, we went out, um, also the banks and um, yeah, just, you know, we did, we did what we thought was right and we went out wide the first day that in close to second and five days I happened to, to hook in and get the fish. Um, which is you can't really complain when that happens. And they happened to be, you know, it's not massive, but that would take up the job done.

Speaker 3:

So you one the one the biggest fish on both days? Boy.

Speaker 5:

Yeah. It's, it's funny cause um, most of the boys caught about 10, 20, 30 fish. I actually only caught three fish for the whole weekend and those three fish were the three largest fish for the whole car. Wow. On the first day I got myself a 19 one, which was about 110 centimeters. And then I got I think three at 99 centimeters. And then the next day I, um, we only caught two petitions on both. The boat. One was a 14, 15 kilo fish and the other ones I then one and that was the second day. And that was still the later on the second day at the end of the day.

Speaker 3:

And am I right in saying that Stu Ferenczi was your mate that pulled the pin?

Speaker 5:

Yeah. Okay. I wasn't trying to tell anyone here, but now you're going to go down that row. Yeah, he was.

Speaker 3:

He was, he was at guest on our last episode. So our good, that good that he let someone else win something after him winning the Victor Harbor camp.

Speaker 5:

Well that's right. The same courage is different day. Different person.

Speaker 3:

You've had a red hot summer then you guys,

Speaker 5:

what was that? Sorry.

Speaker 3:

You've had a red hot summer. If you have a, if you and your mates have won both.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, looked, it was fantastic. And there's a few, most of the color, I think it's a, it was actually my first column, so I hadn't done any competition. I tend to be a bit of a purist and just go out and fish for fun. But, um, I thought I'd have a crack and look, I wasn't expecting to win the money in the pros first day. The second day ended the grand check. And it was start.

Speaker 3:

Yeah. And we're both fish caught on the same lure. Boy,

Speaker 5:

I actually didn't use any Louis. Uh, so, um, as you know, I have a bike company so I basically, um, my main thing was pushing with bikes so I barely[inaudible] and uh, I actually fished a few weeks early and so they're writing a lot of bites. So I um, got into the back end of our little lab, we call it, where we do all the bite processing. And I made up some of our special, not trying to mix and not turn some white light and uh, and use that. Basically I'm dropping them down with tubing and until I could get a couple of big ones to come up and take it,

Speaker 3:

we might or we might touch on the special mix a bit later on. But does what else you got for us? Boy, tell me, mate. Was it a good fight? Did it uh, Stu was telling us last week, the best way to catch him is by Cuming him up. It was a good first run.

Speaker 5:

Yeah. Look my

Speaker 3:

and I, um, I thought, uh, I've got new outfit that I wanted to try out. So I had a little Rapala 5,000. And, uh, I had, uh, on the train with Delta and then not big fish rods that, that'd be a fun roads and, but um, as soon as it hit, uh, I knew I was in for a fight because they took off the spoil and about 10 seconds. Um, and uh, yeah, I really had to work the fish. So it was probably a good thing I didn't call three 50 yards away, can cause my back's to killing me. And uh, you said the fishing was pretty good overall, was it?

Speaker 5:

Yeah, look, it was a fantastic guy. Like those, plenty of fiscal the first day, not so many the second, but the first day. I actually mentioned to someone the other day that it was actually really good to say because, um, a lot of people don't know much about QB. And I know it's, Jews probably mentioned a bit about the way it's drawn Pilcher and Beethoven aside to bring them up off the bottom. But, um, when you have those sort of conditions, you don't want a load to step and she didn't want a lot of boats running in their engines. You don't want all the boats running over the ground and to see, you know, it'd be 60 something Ks out off shore and have 20 boats out there and all cooperating and, and you know, fish on either side of everyone's bite. Um, and sharing tips and hints and those sorts of things was actually fantastic to say. You don't really stay in that often these days.

Speaker 3:

Oh, that's good to hear. Yeah. Good. Yeah, that's what it's all about boy. Till the gear till the fans out there. Your tips to fish that part of this day.

Speaker 5:

Oh look, it's one of those things. Uh, I think if you, if you put the owls and you'll get the fish and take your time to learn your craft and I may not in the sense of like, not just you, you're on your equipment, but you're also your fight. Um, it took, it took a long time and took a pulling a lot of fish out the salt to kind of understand like how the tune it work and, and especially if you're fishing on that side and um, Victor seems to be a lot harder than the York side. I can give you that one probably cause there's more bites around. But yeah, just patience, trial and error. And then just record everything you do because you know, I can jump on one boat and I'll catch a fish for the day, but I can jump on my boat and catch it because I put my vitality out. So such just takes time to learn your craft and lend your bite.

Speaker 3:

Beautiful. Well that's a, a a good wrap of the[inaudible] tuna comp Boyd. Now tell us about your business. We're very interested in these vending machines there. How's your tackle vending machines that you may have seen around the place? Tell us about that boy.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, so I started, um, a house, a taco a couple of years ago. And, um, the, the goal was to have a few vending machines locally and big in the region. So, you know, out at the port longer agents and area. And, um, I had a bit of an issue with um, supplier Baten and quality of fate at the time. And so, um, it forced us to sort of branch out into that spectrum, become a, a process there and, and source our own bait. And from there we found that everywhere we went, because of the quality, the bite, everyone kept asking us to put more and more of these machines out and then notice they supplied more and more bite to their store or to the other agents. So the business kind of started overnight and then grew legs very quickly and, and brunch down.

Speaker 3:

Yeah. That's amazing. So the idea I suppose came around you just not been able to get your hands on some good, good quality, a bait, I suppose. You know, you weren't happy with the servo stuff anymore.

Speaker 5:

Well, the thing is is that, and you guys probably know this, but first time care about us don't see it. Don't come on the tide, they'll come on the right weather, the right, the right bait, the right everything. So you know, it's two o'clock in the morning and it's the best time. Then that's the time you go fishing. And unfortunately your taco store's closed January at 6:00 PM. So then you are left with whatever's around. And the old saying, biggest shop, he chooses you really all wrong. Your dos. If you go to say I save all somewhere like that where they don't have a fresh supply. Well heaven forbid you're in a region that doesn't have anything at all.

Speaker 3:

And do you source the bait locally? Boyd?

Speaker 5:

Yeah, so like 85% of the product comes from South Australia. So you know, whether it'd be the pippies will couples from Gola, uh, whether it'd be the coaches from port Lincoln squeak from port Lincoln. Um, and if it's not in[inaudible], then we go out to Queensland WWI Victoria next. And very rarely do we bring something in from[inaudible] spaces. That is from my, the space, I would say. Yeah.

Speaker 3:

And what about Boyd watching most successful vending machine you've got, which one turns over the most stock

Speaker 5:

look, it's, it's, it's actually changes seasonally. So like, uh, in winter, um, you, you pull them on good jetty is pretty popular cause your salmon are running and it just gets, it just gets up like decimated. They wake up in the morning and you're going to get up an hour early every day when the salmon are on because every day there's another bite you got to put into it. At the moment during the summit, Brighton seem to be the most popular. Um, that's done really well, especially with the crabs coming in as well. Um, so it's difficult, different products in them for each of the regions. So it's really hard to tell. Um, probably the most proper one at the moment though that we've gotten and the one was lacking the most is probably the one that I stole at Christie's speech and we put that one in, uh, about a month or two ago. And uh, that one is a little bit different to the other vending machines. We actually put a little bite in there that at a cheaper, right, so was top price. Um, and that's a service we do for the customers because when we close that doors at six, we went up until the next day. Um, at least that way they have access to buy. If they're running light or whatever, they're not left out and they know exactly what they can get it for them. We give it back to the middle shaper. Right. For that reason.

Speaker 3:

Yeah mate, that's a fantastic service you offer. I have driven past that venue machine. So like you've said, if you're fishing those parts at the time when you're not open, make sure you drop in there and get into that vending machine. Boy, tell us about plans to expand the network mate. Where's the next vending machine and how many do you have in the state?

Speaker 5:

Yeah, so I have access to, uh, about a hundred vending machines in title. Uh, they're not shaped, they're about 16 and a half thousand. H

Speaker 3:

kidding.

Speaker 5:

Yeah. So the vending machines themselves, uh, that they don't see it because there are, uh, what time is the chosen technology. So there's one of the first two vending machines in the world. They have, uh, technologies and where they can have frozen goods at the bottom and refrigerated goods at the top, also the one condense and Marta. So what that means is you've got your live whams, your large gents up the top, and then you could have down the bottom your frozen Phillies and your squid all within the one tracing and proponent. So, but yeah, so we've got access to quite a few. Um, and then basically, um, at the moment I'm actually fitting out a couple of machines once going over to Nelson Bay, uh, over just across the border, just in Victoria, South Boulder. Just pause Portland and I've got another one being seated at the moment for, uh, North Haven boat ramp. Uh, they've come on board as one of the guards are stocking in our bait and tackle and uh, they're getting a machine ready to put out the products for their customers as well.

Speaker 3:

Yeah. Good. All right. Last question for you, Boyd. Tell us about any new products you've got in the background. You were talking about the, uh, the Burley you used in the comp, but anything in particular that's doing well?

Speaker 5:

Yeah, liquid, we could a nod tray range that we developed and um, it's uh, maybe the organic compounds and things like that. So it's fun for the environment, but it's something that, um, obviously it's nothing new, it's just we're just reading and invigorating some of the bites and of the, with people fish with those baits. So, um, we have a range of pellets which a a Natera colors, which week is what we call them. And then I hit the water, I take about three or four seconds and then the water can traits and activates in the pellet. And that guy, bright green, uh, saw Teresa look green. And that's the same concept that you use for squid. It's the same concept you use for, um, you know, attracting certain fish that see in, in the ultra Baba spectrum. Yes. And, uh, we also use things like cripple, NSA, fish, whole mines, a whole heap of other things that also had this attractants and broadening to make them semah. So the pellets last longer in the, in the cages. The pellets would obviously attract a variety of spaces. Um, and we have that in pellet form and we also have it in our squid. So we brought us with them in a, in a Nazri range and you hit it with a UV light. It looks fantastic and it lasts for about 30 or 40 minutes and sends out. So it leaves a nice barely sleep. Ratu Bay and fish think it's into stress. And you know, we've got some testing at the moment with some of the universities happening where um, yeah, at the moment we are looking at the ratios of how much it out fishes on both the boat and we're looking at about three, three to one or a four to one ratio, uh, on both the boat. Wow,

Speaker 3:

that's amazing. There's, there's a real science to it obviously. Boy.

Speaker 5:

Yeah. Look, it took a lot of trial and error about, I think we've got a pretty stable product now and we're mass producing. We can't even keep it on the shelf script enough. We send pallets with the stuff out all the time and it's just a bot. That being said, it's one of those things that uh, you know, if we're getting people walking in the store knowing that I can get it here or they go to one of our tackle stores that have it on board and get it and nothing about writing reviews, that's fun.

Speaker 3:

Yeah. Beautiful. Fantastic. Boy, you're clearly a very knowledgeable man when it comes to all of this sort of thing. Fantastic work on the tuna. Congratulations again. Really appreciate you joining us today. Thank you very much.

Speaker 5:

No, I appreciate you guys having me

Speaker 3:

and guys, make sure you do support boy, and how's your tackle the vending machines and let's go fishing. Tackle store down at Christie's beach is where you'll find all these great products Boyd has discussed. Fantastic. Boy. Thanks again mate.

Speaker 5:

Thanks guys.

Speaker 3:

Beautiful. Thanks very much, Boyd, for joining us. Boyd Sparrow, winner of the, we're in a tuner, carb and vending machine. Extraordinary has been a great guest. Brody, you were down in the Southeast mate. Tell us about the Cray diving. What happened? What, who did you stay with? Where did you go? Yeah, so he stayed halfway between robe and Kingston with goodie and lousy on the farm. So good catch up with them. Headed down to port Mac on Sunday, Sunday morning peak ski up on the way from beach port. He's local so he knew what he was talking about. Mitt down there with Sally and Hector, the uh, the resident beta port, Mac LA. They're not like who's but they spend a bit of time down there so they knew a few spots. So yeah, dive down at port Mac LA. We got three or four crayfish of size, couple of size ones and plenty abalone. So good to get out in the water, have a swim around and come home with a bit of detail. Yeah, skier is a bit of a guru down there. He's a pro fisherman himself, isn't it? Yeah. So he's a farmer but also a, they've got a Cray license, so a couple of months of the year they, they do that as well. But they've caught, they're caught their quota so they're not too worried about this Corona virus business. So good on them. Yeah. Good on him. We can't wait to have scary on the show. We'll bloody twist his arm and getting money for a few yards for sure. Certainly knows a thing or two about salt Creek fishing too. So that'd be a good to learn his secrets cause I, you've never put us on the fish. Fantastic. And make her date. Was it, what was the water like? The weather down there this weekend. Must've played a part. Yeah. So a little bit surgey in the water. So a bit of a kelp sort of getting in the way. Um, you know, back and forth with the swell, but very shallow water. It was only sort of two or three meters we were in. So that's certainly the shallowest water I've dived in for crayfish. Okay. Yeah. Very good. Very good. Similar to the other places that you might've dived around the state or much shallow, shallow, I reckon sort of certainly deeper water. Everyone York's where I've dived and you know Victor and Kai where we've dived before as well as more been sort of a a a Rocky wall as opposed to this was more broken limestone. He saw a bottom. So a bit of a different different setup tonight, this weekend. That would've been good to see another part of the world I'm sure expanding the resume mailers they say, yeah you've certainly got to open up all your options. So good to dive in another part of the state. Very good. Tell the listeners out there about your setup mate. I've seen you, you genuinely have when it comes to Cray diving all the gear but no idea. So got the full scuba kit. So uh, had that for a couple of years. Got the nose, got the catch bag, the gloves, the bloody torch. What else do you need really? Right. I've seen that set up. It's just, it takes forever. It's a bit of putting together a bit of work, but a interesting set up down there. How Hector, he had a scuba tank floating around on a body board, a bit of a, a bit of a hooker set up. So that's another option. And a couple of the other boys, they just had the white belt and snorkel. So they were certainly a, what do you do to hold their vest a bit better than us? What do you, what do you think about them? Just show a new up with those scuba gear. Ah, well look, yeah, you've got nothing to say. I've got nothing to bounce. Nothing. So it's certainly an option in that sort of water, but you can't go out and in much deeper than that fair call. Did you see anything crazy down there? Uh, no. Nothing too out of the ordinary few fish, plenty of rounds or anything like that? No. No. Grow has this time. Certainly had our eyes peeled, but a pretty regulation sort of stuff. Abs and craves and did see a few other crazy, we couldn't quite get our hands on. They were too deep in holes. And bit too fast for us. Sorry, there was a bit out there. Yeah. You mentioned abs, you get a fade of them. Yep. We've got our bag of abalone so we've got them ready to uh, ready to cook up over the next couple of nights. So we might our bitter sweet chili and lemon or get some crumbs on it or something like that. So we might mix it up a little bit. Yeah. Well last time we had add food this with Crossy heat did them pretty well, didn't he PRD a sweet Julia lemon juice. I continued the Iceland thinly sliced. So, uh, we might do some up like that, but we'll keep you posted. Very good,

Speaker 4:

very good. So in terms of the, uh, best Cray locations you've been diving around the state mate, where, where does that come from?

Speaker 3:

Well, I'm certainly no expert, but that was very accessible diving. You just walk straight in off the shore around the corner from port Mac. So that's certainly a positive. It was shallow water. So like I say, you can, it can access it with just a snorkel on a white belt. Other spots. I've dived, certainly Yorke peninsula down the bottom end in a January with Jack and his family was uh, that's certainly the most crayfish and the biggest crash fish I've ever seen. Um, diving on KPI's also great fun. Particularly where a waste day where you can literally walk out from the front door and about a hundred meters around the corner on the cliffs you walk, you get a fade. So that's good fun as well. And done a little bit of diving off Victor, but probably minimal success compared to the rest of them.

Speaker 4:

Yes. Yeah. Now we're definitely gonna feel the listeners in there on um, the KII edition next week or the next episode of course. And we're going to tell the lessons. Yeah, there's some hotspots. We're going to try and drive some tourism for that wonderful part of our state, that's for sure. Tell us about how you cook, cook up the crane, right. What size, what's the best way to go?

Speaker 3:

Well the bigger ones boil them up just so you get the, make sure they're all cooked throat. Pretty hard to cook the big ones on the Barbie. Just cause of the, you know, uneven hate, the Barbie producers. So you've got to boil the big ones. I personally think the small ones are best cooked on the barbecue. So a bit of garlic butter, salt and pepper and parsley, a bit of a garlic butter. Put that in them, you know, six or seven minutes on the shell side and just flip them for a quick minute to Brown off the top. And I reckon they're beautiful.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, they are. Well last time I had them when you called them out mine, they were delicious. So well that's great. Well thanks for your update on the Cray diving mate. That's been really good. Um, and we'll look forward to a few more uh, Cray, uh, stories as they come over in the next month or so.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, certainly will. I hope to get out again shortly. Now this is what I think everyone's really been waiting for this segment. You bagged out my efficient, you joked last week. It's a big buildup. It's got very positive feedback in the, uh, in the social media circles. So what have you got for us now? The pressure is well and truly on it is.

Speaker 4:

It is. I'm feeling that pressure. Well, he goes, nothing righty. A cruise ship passes by a remote Island. All the passengers, they, they, they're looking at something, they're going, what the hell are they? There's a bearded man running around waving his arms wildly. Sort of like a Doosan

Speaker 3:

no ask Todd, really love that. Shout out

Speaker 4:

the shore going, what the hell is he trying to get our attention or something? And one of the passengers says, captain, who the hell is that man over there? And the captain replies, mate, I've got no bloody idea. But he goes nuts every single year we drive

Speaker 3:

past him. Good gear. Look, not fad with the out with the Castaway star gag, but I think you're,

Speaker 4:

there is a genuine cast too. I think you'll appreciate that shout out and he'll know that he looks like one too.

Speaker 3:

I think your delivery of that joke was much better than the actual content itself. So there's my feedback for you.

Speaker 4:

Ah, good. Yep. Well that just about wraps everything up for the day guys. How can the listeners get involved already? Tell us.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, so Facebook and Instagram search all the gear button idea and you come across us. We're also up on Spotify and Apple podcasts. I search both of those, uh, those search engines for us and we come up there. So give us a subscribe so you get first access to all the episodes.

Speaker 3:

Yeah. Stubby holders hat. So getting whole work hats. We're talking shirts, we're talking fishing rods. Eventually mate, we'd bloody go big. I'm, I'm certainly looking forward to having your ugly bug on the side of efficient road.

Speaker 4:

All right guys. Well thanks very much for listening. Get involved on the socials and uh, yeah, give us your feedback. Beautiful. Thanks guys. Cheers.
