And uh hope you like it because you know, I mean, if that's if you don't like it, uh, you know, I guess I'll just say you get what you pay for, you know. Um now this week, joining me on the waffle, I know you I've had a myriad, um, an oblong-shaped amount of people on the podcast recently of uh really good guests. And now, to take it up a notch, I'm bringing in a guest that you'll all be excited and really happy to hear. On the line with me, all the way up in Kansas City. I've got Matt on the line. Matthew, welcome back. How are you?
SPEAKER_04Good evening. I'm very well.
SPEAKER_01Good.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, as much as I'd miss being here, I've enjoyed it a lot with all the the caliber of the guests that you've had on here.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely, absolutely.
SPEAKER_04I feel like it's a bit of a step down now, really, though.
SPEAKER_01Do you have any TMZ news for us, real quick? Or that's the new that's the new standard. You gotta have you gotta come in with a celebrity death or something to start out.
SPEAKER_04Uh well, Tim Carey died during the week.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, he was on that movie I hated, wasn't he?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I know. I did think about you when I saw him on there, and I was like, a bit of a travesty that you didn't enjoy that.
SPEAKER_01He's had a good there there was a role that I saw. I saw a picture of a bunch of roles he had done, and there was something I remember seeing going, oh yeah, I liked I liked him on that, but I don't remember.
SPEAKER_04Was it Pennywise out of the 90s issues?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he was the it he was the original clown, I think.
SPEAKER_04Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_01But oh, okay. He had a good run. Um so let's see. Let's let's talk about some uh some personal news that happened in this last week. Um I'll start out. How about that? Can I start out? Depends on how personal you're gonna be. No, no, no, it's not, it's just just things that happened, you know.
SPEAKER_04Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_01I mean you're like, yeah, where where are you going with that?
SPEAKER_04We already named off all Bon Jovi songs in uh a few moments ago. Yeah. And no one come join Patreon to hear.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Well, gee, that's not a good selling point. No, probably not. So uh on Friday night, when I got off of work, I came home and I picked up my daughter, and her and I went and saw a movie in the theaters, Matt on opening night.
SPEAKER_04Oh, I'm curious to hear what movie this is.
SPEAKER_01This is a movie. Um I know what it is. It's like that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it just came to me.
SPEAKER_01I bet Bruce Dickinson would want to see it as well. Yeah. But it's uh my absolute, since I was a little kid, favorite cartoon character in a feature film, which I was so happy to find out was coming out. It's called Coyote. Oh, go on. You go on Coyote versus Acme. And you'd think, you know, some old codger like me.
SPEAKER_04Who's never been called Wiley, I'm sure.
SPEAKER_01Uh not Wiley, but I've been called Wiley. Um, but some old codger like me that used to watch cartoons back in the day, of course I'm gonna like it, right? Where's the real test here? Oh, it's the 19-year-old kid, right, that went to the movie with her dad. And multiple times there in the movie, Matthew, I heard there would be a little kind of not like a little sweet part, and I'd hear Sarah go, uh. And I saw her laughing a lot during the movie because it's very it was very Looney Tunes. Yeah. You know, there was a lot of uh yet uh, you know, I don't know how familiar you are with Looney Tunes cartoons and characters, but Peppy Le Pew made an appearance.
SPEAKER_04Think about Peppy LePew now.
SPEAKER_01I know, I know. Yeah, there's a comedian that does a whole bit on all of the things that make the characters funny. Yeah, and like six of them, they all stutter and have speech impediments and stuff. And and but it's funny though. It's funny.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, you know their political incorrectness back then.
SPEAKER_01Talked about you know Pepe Le Pew and how he what does he do? He holds women against their will. It's a great, it's a great I'll have to send you the bit.
SPEAKER_04It was a different time, yeah.
SPEAKER_01But so Pepe Le Pew, a Tasmanian Devil, Foghorn, Leghorn, Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, Tweety Bird, um, of course, the Roadrunner, uh, and of course Wiley Cody. Um, just a lot of there might be some other characters that I don't remember from off the top of my head that were in it. But there was a there was a there was one that was like a big red character, and he didn't speak, but he was this really weird. The grant the granny that uh owned Tweety Bird, she was in it.
SPEAKER_04In the black dress, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, she was one of the characters. Um it was but it was, I gotta say, I absolutely loved the movie. I thought it was really well done. And when we left, Sarah goes, I go, what did you think? She goes, that was a lot better than I was expecting. Well, that's good. I know, and I was like, uh, and uh it prompted uh Bruno McDonald sent me a picture of his dad, and his dad was wearing a Wiley Cody t-shirt. And he he said, My dad wore that shirt the last time we went to a concert together, you know, way back in the day. I thought that was really cool. Did you do? Yeah. Yeah. And then he he sent me a picture of him and a Wiley Cody stuffed animal. Bruno, Bruno McDonald and a Wiley Cody stuffed animal. So I was like, you know, it just it made me smile because I'm like, to know other people, you know, are fans of Wiley Cody. And I wore a t-shirt, a Wiley t-shirt that night. And um, Sarah was like, Do you have another shirt I can wear? And I was like, I do, but it's in a box and I can't find it. I was digging around trying to find it. But Sarah and I both really enjoyed the movie. It was it was cool to be there on opening night, you know, and just uh because I was I told Vanessa I said, I I would imagine it won't be in the theaters for a long time. And uh, you know, it's not one of these, like it's not like a Spider-Man movie where it's gonna be in the theater for three months or something. So I was like, I gotta make sure I see it. And and I wanted I said I want to be supportive as well, so I want to make sure I see it opening night. So but um you also went and saw something in person uh this weekend as well, right? Uh almost. Almost?
SPEAKER_04Almost Kiss.
SPEAKER_01That's right. Almost Kiss and Casey DC. He's saying the band's name is Almost Kiss.
SPEAKER_04That was the first band I saw.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And so apparently they've been around a long time. Because during the show, uh the singer mentioned that they were doing what do you call it? Almost Kissmas in December. Oh, okay. And this will be the 28th year that they've done it. Wow. And I was like, oh, that's pretty impressive for a tribute band to have been around that long, and they were really good. Like I was pretty impressed. It's just like a little mini show and all. Ace had his smoking guitar, they did the gene, little bass solo, and you know, spinning. I was surprised at the spinning blood. I was like, I wonder if they'll do that, because then it's gonna ruin their costumes, they gotta clean it all up and all. Yeah, but they did it, but man, the sound was really, really good for them, and musically they're really good. So well, Peter did Beth, but we're not sure if he really did Beth after all. Because so you know how Danzig will hold the microphone kind of up and in his fist.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04So it's kind of covering his mouth, and that's how Peter was the entire time of that song. And he sounded very good the whole way through. Yeah. Now he didn't have a microphone on his his drum set at all, so he didn't do any other songs, he just came down.
SPEAKER_01Oh wow, okay. Uh-huh. So no black diamond? Yeah. Paul sang?
SPEAKER_04He did a good job, but I was I was looking forward to hearing the drummer do it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I got to do it.
SPEAKER_04Because I'd already heard um Paul and Jane for the whole night and Ace for the whole night.
SPEAKER_01There's been a there has been an instance in KISS history, in Kissry, uh, where Paul actually sang Black Diamond at a KISS concert.
SPEAKER_04I recall, and I think I've heard it, but I don't know what the reasoning was behind that having happened.
SPEAKER_01Peter Peter was saying he's his hands hurt too much to play. And he just basically was like, I I can't go on tonight. You know, because he was a a drama queen and uh he he wanted to kind of be like, I'm in control here. I'm gonna and so they got uh his uh his name, the guy's name was Ed Cannon. He was uh Peter's drum tech. They put the makeup on him and he played a show with KISS. He didn't sing.
SPEAKER_04So was that back in the 70s?
SPEAKER_01No, this is in the this is on the reunion era. It was at some point. Yeah, because back then, well, yeah. Did they try to sell it as him? No, no, no. I mean he had he had the makeup on. Yeah, but but they said Peter was sick, he wasn't able to make it, whatever it was, and they said we've got you know, they they announced who he was and all, but it's really it's a it's it's all recorded, you can see it. It's really interesting to see, you know. Yeah, I've heard audio for it. It's cool. It's it's really cool to see or hear.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so they did like a I don't know, it was about an hour 15, hour 20 minute set. They cover all you know, a lot of the 70s stuff. There was uh I wasn't bored with some of it, but it was songs I have no interest in. Like Lick It Up, uh Heaven's on Fire.
SPEAKER_01Oh man, I was Tears Are Falling. No, shoot, no. I want to hear that. I'd love to hear those.
SPEAKER_04No, and that's as far as they went into the catalogue, but most of it was you know, all the 70s stuff.
SPEAKER_01So they didn't play anything past say asylum then.
SPEAKER_04No.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_04They they kept to that. They did I Was Made for Loving You.
SPEAKER_01Um I'd rather hear Tears Are Falling, Lick It Up and Heaven's on Fire than I Was Made for Loving You.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, of course that's when all the little girls, not the little girls, but the girls are all dancing around. That's the jam. Of course, so was Lick It Up and Heaven's on Fire. That's where it knows most of the things.
SPEAKER_01Heaven's on Fire is an awesome song, man. I love it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it doesn't work for me. I just wasn't really interested in that period of them, though.
SPEAKER_01I mean, that's literally that is when I got into Kiss. Like I didn't even know KISS wore makeup. I thought Mark St. John was the original guitar player for KISS.
SPEAKER_04Oh, that's what I was trying to think of. So it went from Vinny Vincent to Mark St. John to Bruce Cooley, didn't it? Uh-huh. So did Mark St. John only play one show?
SPEAKER_01He played one or two. I think he played one full show and he played uh a maybe two or three partials, like where he there was a show where he played half a show and then Bruce came out and played because he had the hand problem. But Bruce was filling in on the tour, and so Bruce was showing like he was like, Man, I gotta make the best of this. And he did make the best. I mean, he ended up 10 years in the band after that, but yeah, Mark only did and and the show, the one full show he did, they released it like last two years ago.
SPEAKER_04Uh, one of those live the soundboard things.
SPEAKER_01Uh-huh. Yeah. So it's really cool to hear, but it's the it ain't the best recording, and you can't, I don't think you can hear him that well. And I thought it's literally his first full show he ever played, so it's probably not the best representation. If he would have gotten 10 shows in a row, you know, he probably would have sounded better and fit in better. But yeah.
SPEAKER_04No, but they were really good. So I was stoked. If I hear Kiss, I want to hear um, I've got to hear Black Diamond, it's all time favourite Kiss song. Um, The God of Thunder, and anything after that, I was pretty happy with, but I thought their set was solid.
SPEAKER_01What did they open with?
SPEAKER_04Detroit Rock City. And it's funny because I could hear what did they have? They had some music that I was like, this is not what I'd expect to hear before Kiss, but I can't think what it was now. But it was just like, you know, you hear the feedback or whatever coming through. It's like they're gonna start with Detroit Rock City. And that's what they did.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's a great opener. Yeah, deuce. That's a great opener as well, if they play that as a opener. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I'm trying to think of something else songs. But anyway, what was really I guess that okay, KC DC, that's a given that they're from here, Kansas City, DC. Uh when they start, when the second show for AC DC started, so they start with Hell's Bells. So Bon Scott era and they played a few songs.
SPEAKER_01Uh Hell's Bells, that'd be Brian era.
SPEAKER_04Hell's Bells? What am I thinking of?
SPEAKER_01Hell in a Bad Place to be, Highway to Hell.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, oh sorry, Highway to Hell. Yeah, Hell in a Bad Place to Be, they did that.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_04Then later they moved into the Brian Johnson era because they played about three or four songs off the back and black. They did Money Talks and Thunderstruck. But what was really interesting, and I didn't pick up on what was happening. So the first guy that was singing under as Bon Scott at one point mentioned he's like, Oh, okay, we'll have some Brian Johnson for you now. And he looked down at a part of him, I don't know if it was on his clothes or on his arm or something, but he made a comment, Oh, I've got some white makeup on there. How did that get on there? How'd that get there? He was the singer with the almost kiss. Oh, really? I was like, Oh man, that's pretty cool. Because when they started playing, I was like, man, he does a really, really good Bond. He sounds like Bond.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04It's convincing. Or convincing enough. And then I was like, so he was Paul Stanley for that set, came on to KC DC, and now he's um he's doing the first half of the show here. So he's in he's in that band? Apparently, I didn't realize, but well, he must be because the person I'd gone there with had heard from someone that they work with that some of the band members swap. And I was like, oh, okay.
SPEAKER_01But who came out and did Axel? The Axel songs there was they didn't get that far. Oh, dang.
SPEAKER_04No, uh, but I got to hear I was like, man, so before they played, I was like, AC to EC, when I go see them, or when I used to go see them, I would basically wait the whole show to hear for those about to rock. That's all I just wanted to hear that. So I'm of course I'm wishing the rest of the concert away just so I can get to it. So I was like, if I hear for those about to rock, I want to hear Touch Too Much, I was like, I'll pretty much be happy. There was one of the songs, and I can't think of what it was now.
SPEAKER_01But I got to hear all the songs I wanted to hear. Rock and roll damn nation, maybe?
SPEAKER_04No, you know what? I was standing there and I could not think of the last name on uh the last track on Power Ridge. I could hear it, I could feel it.
SPEAKER_01Kicked in the teeth.
SPEAKER_04Kicked in the teeth. I was like, man, that would be awesome.
SPEAKER_01They didn't play either one of those.
SPEAKER_04No, nothing off of that album.
SPEAKER_01Well, baby, that's tough. It really was.
SPEAKER_04Uh, but no, they were really good. And it was like 27 bucks for about three hours. Oh, yeah. Seeing both those bands. That's great. And the music was awesome. Like AC DC, uh the KC DC, sorry. Yeah. Yeah, they killed it. Like, I really enjoyed Kiss. I loved the KC DC. I would love to see.
SPEAKER_01The energy hearing a band play A C D C with ferocity is just incredible. It's incredible energy.
SPEAKER_04I got goosebumps now. Thinking about I got that a few times.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Um, but no, so uh I was standing there watching Almost Kiss and I I'm watching the you know, the guy who's up there is Gene, and I was like, man, his bass lines they're pretty simple. But and so some of their music is, but it's so effective. I was like, anyone can well almost anyone can play this, but not anyone could come up with the ideas for this music.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_04But and and then the other part I was thinking about was man, it is so cool because this guy that was singing, I was like, man, this is probably like Paul back in the late uh late 90s, maybe 2000. He sounds like you know a whole lot better than what you're gonna get lately. Of course, that's Paul's age now.
SPEAKER_01Sure, sure.
SPEAKER_04But I was like, man, this is you know, they talked about we could continue because they could have the avatars or whatever, or people could come in and take their place. I was like, they they really could. Because to me, Kiss is just the the entity on the live stage because they had other songwriters, they had other people playing their parts on the albums and all, but live is where it's at. Yeah, and I was like, man, it's so cool to have a band like this keeping that music alive. I was just really, really impressed. I had an awesome night that night with those two bands, it was great.
SPEAKER_01Well, that's awesome, man. Uh I think seeing a cover band, a good cover band, is it's a lot fewer and farther between, and a lot fewer and farther between on the dollar signs to go to go see a band like that, and you know, and they're probably gonna play some songs that the main band won't play or won't touch, you know, and and it's just a small environment. There's you're not gonna be in the nosebleeds, or you're not gonna, you know, it's just it's such a cool thing to go do.
SPEAKER_04So it was exciting, and I just I was standing there thinking, man, this is almost what it could have been like when they first started. I'm this close. Yeah, I've got this kind of smallest stage, maybe it's yeah, I don't know, 60 feet, 70, 80 feet, whatever it is across.
SPEAKER_06Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_04And this is as close as I would ever get to having seen them at this such a small venue. Sure. If it was the real band starting out, yeah. And I just kind of transported, it made me think, like imagine it all. Hey, it was great, it was good.
SPEAKER_01That's awesome. That's cool. I'm glad you did that. I'm glad I'm glad you got to go and see a you know, a live show. It's just nothing. There's the live shows are just they're fewer and farther between the older we get, and you know, if we're if we're lucky, you know. And but uh, well, let's see here. What else? Let's see. Movie, I saw a movie, you saw a concert. Did I see anything else? Did anything else? I don't think anything else really happened there. Uh so what about um music? Uh I know you you told me you really went to great lengths to make sure you had everything written down this week, and because you were like, I want my return to go perfectly and no hiccups. So why don't you tell everybody what you listen to with your thorough notes?
SPEAKER_04With that good night. Exactly. Uh, so it was funny. Uh uh we've got to change the order. I'll tell you, I listened to a podcast. I'm gonna start with this. Okay. I listened to the waffle with you and Kirsty from the last week, and Kirsty mentioned that she listened to aha. Oh, that's right. Yeah, I listened to it on Tuesday.
SPEAKER_01I remember this now, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I was like, Oh, that's interesting. And then you kind of chimed in. Oh, I listen, next week when you hear from Matt or whatever, he'll listen to all that.
SPEAKER_01Of course, of course.
SPEAKER_04But little did either of you know that uh by the time I had heard said comments, I had already listened to Aha for the first time this year, the day before. I listened to it on Monday, then found out Kirsty listened to it on Tuesday.
SPEAKER_01You two are in sync. It must have been.
SPEAKER_04Um, so I started out, I was like you know, I haven't listened to Aha in a long time. I'm kind of Jew. So I went back to their first album, Hunting High and Low, and I was like, hmm, it's taking me back. I want to listen to some more. Some scoundrel days.
SPEAKER_01That's the one I remember you mentioning a lot.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I was on a big kick on that for a while. I liked that a lot. Um, but I just started running through their catalogue. So stay on these roads, east of the sun, west of the moon. Uh, I had thought about Memorial Beach, which is the one that Kirsty had mentioned. Um, but I didn't get that till a little bit later in the week.
SPEAKER_01Until after you heard Kirsty mention it.
SPEAKER_04Uh I just hadn't finished listening to Aha, and then when she mentioned it, I was like, well, I might as well keep having it to continue the next day and all. Uh some Minor Earth, Major Sky. And so I am an AHA fan. Aha was my first favorite band. So how how far I've come. But amongst that, amongst the bulk of uh the aha, I I hadn't listened to any heavy music in the last month.
SPEAKER_01I just I didn't feel yeah, you've been in a you've had a different vibe going on. Exactly.
SPEAKER_04I'm not in the mood for anything hard or anything fast or you know, a thousand beats a minute or whatever, uh vocally or musically or anything. But I was kind of coming out of it and I was like, man, what do I want to hear? And I was screwed, because I keep some like favorite tracks and all. And scrolling through, I had the the inclination to go and listen to one of your favourite bands. I think it's one of your favorites. It's a Canadian band. Forged. If I said Forged in fire, does it mean anything to you?
unknownForged in fire.
SPEAKER_04If I said you could watch a documentary when I said band for just the low, low price of 99 cents.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah. Keep talking. I'm interested now. I'm interested.
SPEAKER_04I think we started a crowdfunder for you, but I don't know how far we how far up the change.
SPEAKER_01I haven't received the first nickel yet, so that's a bit sad. I I have watched that documentary before, though. I have seen it.
SPEAKER_04It's an excellent documentary.
SPEAKER_01It was really good, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah, tears at the heart. Um, yeah, Fortune 5 by Anvil. And you know what? I was like, ah man. It took me back to when I'd been at the concert there like a couple of months ago or whatever. And it made me smile, made me happy. Like listening to some some real hard rock or metal and that again.
SPEAKER_01I was like, Is there any are there any songs on there that start with the word show me?
SPEAKER_04Or five knuckle? No, there's not actually. It's a pretty serious album.
SPEAKER_01Uh oh wow. What are they talking about?
SPEAKER_04Oh well, let me have a look at the trackistics here. Shadow Zone, Fortune Fire, Free as the Wind. That's an awesome track. You might even like that track in isolation.
SPEAKER_01Is it an instrumental?
SPEAKER_04No, I don't know. Um scroll through for it and have a quick listen. Listen to the start.
SPEAKER_01What's it called?
SPEAKER_04I'm not gonna say you would like any Anvil song, but you could like this. Free as the wind. Because I've thought about you and this track before.
SPEAKER_01Anvil. Okay. Free as the wind, Anna Gosh.
SPEAKER_04This is my cheap shot.
SPEAKER_01Here we go.
SPEAKER_04Just my gigs.
SPEAKER_01Here we go. Here we go. Here we go. I think it's dental drumming a little bit here.
SPEAKER_04Oh, I love the drumming in this.
SPEAKER_01He's a bit too busy for my liking in this.
SPEAKER_04I'll give you there's a lot going on, but I would not call it dental drumming.
SPEAKER_01Like I we call Nico a dental drummer at times, but I will say when Nico's dental drumming, everything feels like it works really. That seems like he's trying really hard to get real fast big fills like everywhere.
SPEAKER_04Anyway, after that, I'm not gonna I'm not gonna entertain that. Nope. Um that doesn't seem to I guess I said Memorial Beach. Yep, we did that. Uh I almost went to Billy Joel. Billy Idol. I went to him, but only for a couple of tracks. I was like, yeah, I can't stay with this now. After I had a taste of Anvil, I just wanted some more. But not Anvil. I just wanted to stay in that direction. Um what else did I have here? Thor? Is there some Thor coming up? No, you missed Thor. Thor was the week before all this.
SPEAKER_01Uh sorry, sorry, Doomy. I tried.
SPEAKER_04I'll tell you what, I I really enjoyed listening to Thor. And actually, that's thanks to Melissa. Yeah, it was all would have been thanks to you if I hadn't heard from Melissa first. Metal chat Melissa, that is.
SPEAKER_01Oh, that's right, because they're playing at Hell's Heroes this year.
SPEAKER_04Yes, she informed me of that. And so now I'm entertaining the I didn't think I'd do it, but now I'm really entertaining the idea of going to Hell Heroes.
SPEAKER_01Oh dear. If anyone wants to go to Hell's Heroes and we can have a little meetup, you know, and we can all gather around Matt as he watches Thor. Uh all cameras on Matt.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I I mean I have no interest in Overkill. Uh who are the the main bands there. But I'm I'm cute. I mean, I like the Metal Church album. I know it's gonna be a different singer now.
SPEAKER_01You don't, but you don't have to like you go see like say overkill's there, right? Uh-huh. I would drop in. You you you you watch them play a song or two, and you go, maybe they're maybe they sound better now, or I like it better live or something, but yeah, you don't have to Well, you mentioned something, and I was like, oh, okay, yeah, that'd be a good idea.
SPEAKER_04It's like there's so many bands going on and around at that time. You can just wander in and out.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. That's set up that way, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I wouldn't usually think to do something like that. Like, I'll be there to see a band, that's what I'm gonna watch. But yeah, you could walk around, check this out, check that out. I was like, hmm, that's probably sold me doing something like that.
SPEAKER_01That would be cool. I mean, you could you could you could come down here and we could drive down there together. And uh at least if there's two of us, we can get a room, you know, get a hotel room. Meet you in the meet you in the ladies' room.
SPEAKER_04No, no, meet meet you in the ladies' room. Uh that's kind of where I was going. Okay, I I did tell you I'd been on a huge kiss kick over the last month as well. I'd pretty much stayed with just 70s soft rock or light rock or some other stuff, sting even. Uh yeah. So this week, as far as KISS was concerned, uh, I'd listened to the first album a couple of times. And I think I told you, yeah you weren't big on that one. No, I just never listened to it. I had no I'd listened to it once, and I the only thing I really remember was Black Diamond, and that I never liked the way that ended on the album.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, I don't I don't know. Yeah, yeah, it's weird. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And so I never had to go listen to this again. The only song on I would want to listen to is Hundred Thousand Years, because it's not there's some recordings of it and all.
SPEAKER_01Those two songs both sound good on that album. Other than the ending of Black Diamond, they sound they both sound good on the album.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Um but all these other songs I know from all the live albums that I used to listen to, so I never had to go back to that. So it was basically anything after this that I would listen to. So where did I go to? Um Hotter Than Hell, Dress to Kelly. Basically all the 70s stuff.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Uh I had told you actually, I I did run all the way through the catalogue up until Sonic Boom last year. Oh wow. Yeah, I didn't get to Monster because by the time I got to Sonic Boom, I was like, yeah, I'm not really feeling there's some decent stuff on there, but I'd kind of lost the kiss feeling that I was really um I'd start it out with. Uh but the the surprise packet, and I asked you, I didn't think you would guess what it was gonna be.
SPEAKER_01And it was the first guess, yeah.
SPEAKER_04You surprised me in Unmasked, yeah. And I so I like the dynasty era. I know that I've mentioned that before.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04But listening to Unmasked, yeah, okay. Is that you? It's a little bit corny or whatever. Yeah. Uh, but I like it. I did I do like Shandy. I love Talk To Me.
SPEAKER_01You're all you're from Australia, of course you love Shandy. Yeah, it was big there.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but Naked City, I love that track. That's almost like dirty living, but off this out.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, Naked City's awesome. Yeah, I love it.
SPEAKER_04Mm-hmm. Yeah, what makes the world go round? Tomorrow, that's a great track. Two sides of the coin, that's awesome. Yeah. She's so European. I love that.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Easy as it seems, that's pretty solid. Yeah. Come on, got some ace. Torpedo girl. Torpedo girl. It's fun.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And then you're all that I want. It's just a nice girl. Come on, get your feet wet. But it's fun to listen to this album. I don't care what people say on this. I understand why people might be disillusioned with this. But I mentioned to you, I was like, if you took this album cover away, would people be more receptive to it, perhaps?
SPEAKER_01I think the thing is, is you listen to something like hotter than hell or rock and roll over, and then you fast and then you imagine rock and roll over is only three years before Unmasked. It's such a huge it's yes. It's such a huge change. You know, in in a short time. And of course, they were blowing the market up with everything, toys and and and the solo albums and double platinum and alive two. And I mean, imagine Alive 2 and Double Platinum and four solo albums all came out, I think, the same year. Maybe Alive 2 was 77. No, they were on the Love Gun tour because Love Gun came out in 77. Maybe, maybe Alive 2 came out end of 77. I can't remember right now, but that's a lot of product. I mean, they just they they just they did too much and then but then they took that shift, you know. Like I Was Made for Love and You started it. You know.
SPEAKER_04That was one track. I know that everyone says, oh, that's the the disco album. It's not we did yeah, exactly. We we did it a few years ago.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And it takes that one track aside, and it's a different album.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you got one other disco beat on that album, and that's it. Uh, you already mean like sure knows something. No, Dirty Living.
SPEAKER_04Oh, Dirty Living, sorry, yeah. Yeah, that song's awesome.
SPEAKER_01It's awesome, no, I love it. Don't get me wrong, but it's it's kind of got that you know, I can't get enough to do it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, there's a swing to it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04It's great.
SPEAKER_01I love Dirty Living, yeah.
SPEAKER_04So, and I think I don't know if I was just in the movie, some early kiss to start with. I was like, uh, I want some something rock, but not heavy rock, so I'll go back to the 70s. And that's where it all started, and then I found out that Almost Kiss Were Coming, and I just kind of rolling with it. Jeez, I was watching I don't know how many different live versions of Black Diamond and God of Thunder on YouTube and all, and then watching whole concerts. Did you happen to watch the live version with Paul Stanley?
SPEAKER_01Or listen to it? No, I didn't. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_04But but you know one thing that really impressed me, I think it is Asylum, is it 84? No, Animalized, Animalized.
SPEAKER_0184, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, watching that, God, they were on fire.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, I love I love the version of Cole Gin on that uh Animalized Live.
SPEAKER_04The energy in what I've I used to watch that a lot as a kid in my teens.
SPEAKER_01Eric Carr was driving that truck hard.
SPEAKER_04I loved Eric Carr.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04But it just it took me back. You know, I was like, man, it's the internet that ruined KISS for me in a way.
SPEAKER_01And because I just everybody's opinion, everybody, you're the the secrecy and privacy of bands is gone. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04The magic got taken away from me. But anyway, no, so I was just riding to KISS. But, you know, like I said, I had a little bit of Anvil to uh harden things up a little bit.
SPEAKER_01And Doomie McDouma's gonna be really excited this week. There's a little bit of Thor talk, some Anvil talk, and some KISS talk. What else you got for Doomy?
SPEAKER_04I don't know how he feels about the next band, and I I haven't listened to this next band in it must be two years. I was trying to find when was the last time I listened to an album called Well, actually, I was listening to this album a lot at one stage. But the album is called Arise.
SPEAKER_01Do you know what that is? I mean, I know there's a couple of albums called Arise, but I don't know. Oh, is there's only one by a Brazilian band. Okay, so it is Sepultura.
SPEAKER_04Sepultura, and I was like, oh God, talking about goosebumps listening to this. It is brutal listening to this, like in the best way ever. Oh, I was thinking the opposite actually, but no, I loved it. Um and it made me think back to when I was a kid. Oh, I was a kid, yeah, I was like 17, 18, or whatever. And my first job was at a supermarket, and I remember being out the back in the like the warehouse produce area at all. Me and one of my mates would be out there in the afternoon, and um so there was no management there, so we could put it Were you throwing apples at their face or anything? No, I didn't. Funnily enough, I didn't do that. Maybe hit it.
SPEAKER_01Maybe hit them in the eye or something. Never know.
SPEAKER_04Uh too soon, too close.
SPEAKER_01I yeah, I I've heard a story about you doing that before. I don't know.
SPEAKER_04You can't believe everything you hear. Um But oh yeah, yeah, I've lost my train of thought. No, uh, but I remember listening to Arise back then on cassette. Yeah. There's one thing to hear it now, but think about what Arise was like probably oh, let's say oh geez, over 30 years ago. When it was fresh. Yeah, fresh air. Like I was, you know, I'm no way I'm even 18 when I was listening to this. Yeah. And at the so where I'm working, can you imagine people like adults at that time walking past and hearing this? And I remember there was an electrician there, and he's like, he used the next whatever that I won't use.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04He walked back and passed and he would just shake his head. And he got to the point where I can't take this any longer. And he turned it off. We didn't know what to do because we're just kids working there. Yeah. He's an adult, you gotta respect the adult.
SPEAKER_01Sure.
SPEAKER_04But it just it just brought back all these little memories of stuff like that. And uh so I had to have a bit of a listen to some chaos AD, I'll wrap it up kind of quick. Uh as you do hotter than hell, yeah, listen to that. Just a kill, done that, destroyer did that. Oh, Alive 2, got that in there.
SPEAKER_01Even even the side with the uh No, I didn't listen to the last side. Did you listen to studio tracks? No, I've been there and done that a lot. Um, I don't think I needed to do that. Rocket Ride! Dude, if you're missing if you're missing Rocket Riding Larger Than Life on that side, you're missing out.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I like that.
SPEAKER_01God, they're great. No, I'm saying they're great.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah. I was like Rocket Ride's pretty good.
SPEAKER_01Rocket Ride could be the my favorite Ace Fraley song of all time. So torpedo girl. Yeah, it doesn't hold a candle to Rocket Ride.
SPEAKER_04Uh Kiss off the soundboard. I've I don't know if I've really listened to any of these, but I did listen to the live at Donington in '96.
SPEAKER_01Okay. I haven't heard that one.
SPEAKER_04That was still decent. There are some rough recordings on there that oh yeah, definitely. I started listening, I was like, yeah, I'm not gonna enjoy this, I can't do it. Um Poughkeepsie, I had a bit of a skip through that. Des Moines.
SPEAKER_01Poughkeepsie is the uh I think that's the one with Mark St. John.
SPEAKER_04Oh, is it?
SPEAKER_01Oh, I didn't get through it. In 1984? Yeah, yeah, I think that's the one with Mark St. John.
SPEAKER_04But I did listen to Kiss Off the Soundboard Tokyo from 2001.
SPEAKER_01Oh, with Eric Singer. Yeah, it was good. Yeah, I enjoyed that. That's very cool. That's a very cool because it's a short-lived lineup.
SPEAKER_04Yep, it's a pretty decent recording. It's not like the best recording ever, but yeah, it's pretty good.
SPEAKER_01You know what it makes you realize though when you listen to those?
SPEAKER_04What's that?
SPEAKER_01How annoying Paul Stanley's raps were.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah, you don't care.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Sometimes you're just like, dude, shut up. Play the song. Yeah. It's like like listening to Bruce talk about um that animal or whatever that he saw on some island in Australia or whatever it was.
SPEAKER_04Animal? Was it a quokka?
SPEAKER_01Quakkas, yes. God almighty. Like, dude, you could have played Empire of the Clouds at this point, dude. Come on.
SPEAKER_04Hang on, here's a couple that uh this will warm the cockles of your heart. Uh there was an album that we all like this band, it's pretty much why we're here. And this is part of the title. The band name is part of the title. I'm not gonna say it. But then it says Lost Singer live, and I think it's Zagree band, I guess it's Hungry. About four years ago for 2022. And it opened with someone covering Prowler. Who might have been in this band that was covering Prowler? They had originally recorded it as well. Being Iron Maiden. Puldiano! Oh, that's a better reception than I thought I was gonna get, actually. So I hadn't heard this before. I don't even know how I thought to bring it up. I can't remember now. Um at the start, I was like, man, this sounds really, really good. Better than what I was gonna expect to hear. It started excellently. And so musically, these these dudes are really tight. It's just raw and aggressive, and it made me think of you know when you hear the old early maiden recordings and all, that they are fast and they're raw and it's too heavy and all. It's just explosive. I was like, oh man, how good would this have been to have seen the show? So he was really good with Prowler. But then Murders in the Rue More came on, and I was like, man, this is so great. Started off really good. And then Paul started singing. And I I don't know what key he was looking for, but I don't think he found a key that matched the band throughout this. He was everywhere, and at one point I was like, oh my god. It made me kind of chuckle out loud to myself, and I realised I was chuckling out loud. And at the end of it, I was like, I don't know how I feel. I don't know if I found it amusing or terrible. So I think I just settled it differently.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_04But um, there was some good stuff in there, but I had high hopes at the start, and then uh Paul kind of wavered it. Like musically is really, really good. And then Paul was just kind of a little bit everywhere.
SPEAKER_01But I do. I know how it was that I found. Did, sorry. Past tense. Did yep.
SPEAKER_04Uh War Horse. Yeah, I decided I wanted to listen to Warhorse. And because I was thinking about people's voices. Oh, sorry, going back to a rise, I was thinking about like Max Cavaliero's voice, how it's really gruff singing, but so is his speaking voice, and I just started thinking about different singers. And that's I started thinking about Paul Viado and his speaking voice versus his singing voice. And that's kind of where I went. I just I like I like War Horse a lot. And it started out as a bit of a joke when I heard the first two tracks. Yeah, the singles that he had. I didn't care for it, I thought it was you know, it's a waste of time.
SPEAKER_01Typical Paul, yeah. Didn't say that. You didn't have to.
SPEAKER_04But I like it, and you know, and I feel okay. I felt good like listening to this, that this is where he ended up, that this was his last album. Because I thought it just suited this is what he should have been doing, something like this the whole way along.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And I think yeah, man, he's he started off so brightly and then just kind of lost his way. Just remember bad bad choices, it's on him, I understand. But I think what he could have had, he was never gonna be like Ozzy Osborne, I get that. Yeah. But he could have been a whole lot more than what he really did.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah, I mean, he definitely had a certain amount of momentum, you know, coming out of Iron Maiden.
SPEAKER_05Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_01And uh he had because you know, you still have the people nowadays that are like, okay, yeah, I liked the I liked Maiden when it was Deonno, you know, when he was the guy. But you know, it Maiden wasn't Deonno. Maiden was Steve Harris and writing music and the band around him, and Paul just happened to, I mean, it it takes a he never had the attitude, he he didn't have that what Steve, that magic that Steve he didn't have the drive. Oh, definitely, yeah, yeah. Which is what that was what Steve Steve was drive.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah. That was all him making those decisions. Right. But it just makes me think, yeah, I'm glad on one hand that he got to do this album. And I don't know creatively what how far he was involved. I guess he was probably nothing to do with the music, just yeah, maybe some of the lyrics, but and just the delivery. But I was glad that he finished off on this note. I think it was really good. That kind of sound that he would have had more.
SPEAKER_01For you know, for I'll say I'll say something nice.
SPEAKER_04Hang on, wait for Steve's rant here is what I wrote down.
SPEAKER_01Okay. No, I I'll say I'm actually gonna say, I don't know if you heard the waffle last week, but I said something nice about killers last week, which you probably it might have um you might have had a one of those knock, you know, knock you out of your chair moments that you had in the past when you were uh listening to um well we won't get into that, but um but um it it's Ozzy passed away and he got two albums out in this final few years, which was really great. And so as someone who's not a Paul Diano fan, really, I don't think you would call me, you wouldn't confuse me for a Paul Diano fan. Um it for a Paul Diano fan, I'm i I'm sure it was nice to have him going out on a little bit of what you call and you consider a better note, you know, than you know, trying to remember September, you know.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Things like that. So uh you know, and I saw a real nice clip of Paul Diano today, actually, where he it was when Bruce had cancer and Paul was on stage and he said some real nice things about Bruce, and I was like, wow, that's kind of a rarity, you know. But um, but you know, as far as I I joke around and I mean it's it's well. Who's this bitter is what it comes. Well, you you feel like I don't know. I think he was just I think he just he was a directionless person mostly. And and he he just had to keep falling back on the only success he had because he had to pay the bills at some well when he paid the bills, he had to pay him at some point. You know, when he when he r wasn't running a scam against the government health system or anything like that, you know.
SPEAKER_04But you know, I'm I'm not interested in his personal life, I was interested in his music.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean yeah, and I I never really I tried with with him a little bit, but it you know, it it wasn't for me.
SPEAKER_04So if you didn't like Drifty, you weren't gonna like him.
SPEAKER_01I'll just say that. Okay, yeah. Yo, yo, yo, yo, hold on. Alright. Anything else? Oh, that was me for the week. That wasn't such a bad rant, was it?
SPEAKER_04No.
SPEAKER_01Nicer than you were expecting, I'm sure. I try. I try to uh I didn't want you to beat a dead a dead uh or anything else. A de a dead uh a dead roller.
SPEAKER_04I didn't want you to beat anyone with a rhythm sticker anything. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, definitely. Yeah. Maybe I'm just in a nicer mood tonight. I don't know.
SPEAKER_04Is that right? Let's keep it going. What have you been listening to for the last week?
SPEAKER_01You know, it's funny you should ask me because this week will probably surprise a lot of people compared to the last say month and a half. Is there a change in the wind? Uh yes. A big change.
SPEAKER_04So I'm not gonna hear Order of the Black being talked about again.
SPEAKER_01I I haven't listened to Order of the Black in at least a month.
SPEAKER_04Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So I'll get one out of the way real quick because that's one that's gonna take a little longer to talk about, as I usually do, right? So I did listen to one album by Pink Floyd this week. And I listened to it yesterday. I was going somewhere in the car with my wife, and I thought, she's not gonna want to listen to this other album that I've had on repeat for the last day or two. So I thought, I'll just put, you know, some some kind of mellow pink Floyd on. And so we listened to the Final Cut. Played it, uh, I don't know, it played it might have played two or three times throughout the day as we were in the car and out of the car going different places.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So But okay, so let's go to the other band. Uh I don't have anything else to add about that. I did enjoy listening to the album because I hadn't heard it all week, and I was kind of like, how am I gonna feel about it now that I haven't played it all week? And uh, I did enjoy it. So there was a conversation that happened last week uh on the waffle a bit. One that I wasn't uh as equipped to discuss as I probably should be. I'm sure I'm sure some people like um, you know, maybe a doomy McDoon butt or even more so a hopeless romantic would think I should be a lot more well-versed on. If you catch my drift. If you're picking up what I'm putting down. Um Judas Priest. Last week, uh there was I don't know who I don't know if it might have been a poll that Gen did, or somebody or maybe Kirsty, no, I think what it was is Kirsty said that she was listening to a podcast, I think it was the Priest cast, and they were talking about the albums of the 80s by Judas Priest. And rating them, ranking them, sorry. Which one was the best, which one was the worst, or you know, the least best, as we like to say around here. And so British Steel gets talked about a lot. Um and I thought to myself, you know, I honestly can't really sit here and have a very good conversation about British Steel and point of entry because I just I don't know them that well. I think I don't think I do. So I thought, you know what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna just play these albums and try to get a feel for where a fan might have what they might have felt back then. So, British Steel. I put it on. It's a killer. It's a you ever heard the way British Steel opens? I've listened to it, but not for a long time. Okay, it opens with a song that's really good called Rapid Fire. Now I imagine, you know, if you're a Judas Priest fan, because they in the 70s they had longer songs with a lot more things going on. Uh they were a little progressive. And there was a point where they started changing things up and trying to make songs shorter and more accessible, which a lot of people will point to British Steel. But I am going to uh submit a different uh thing on that this week. Um so but let's just imagine you turn on British Steel. This is how it opens. And then one more I mean that's just straight in your face, man. That's awesome. So good. But I was listening to this album, you know, because again, it opens with a because I've I I don't know that I've ever been very nice about British Steel, but I haven't had any I haven't said like a lot of negative either, but it's like so I listened to it. I'm like, okay, let me let me get a feel so I can at least have an opinion, you know? And I love Judas Priest. Rob Halbert's my favorite vocalist of all time. Even though I'm not the most versed in Judas Priest all the time. So then Metal Gods plays. And I like Metal Gods. I I I'm I'm very familiar with that because it was on uh Priest Live in 1986, the first Priest uh piece of music album that I owned at all. Um then you get to Breaking the Law. And as I'm listening to Breaking the Law, I'm reminded of l watching Beavis and Butthead and just hearing them go, God, this sucks. I like Breaking the Law on Priest Live because it's fast and Rob shrieks out breaking the law. It's not just like breaking the law, breaking the law, you know. And Beavis was like, God, this really sucks, you know. Then there's a song called Grinder that comes on. And Grinder is a really good song as well. I like it.
SPEAKER_04Wasn't that an app you used to use?
SPEAKER_01No, that's the one you were talking about using earlier.
SPEAKER_04Oh, that's never cool.
SPEAKER_01So let me let you hear a little bit of grinder real quick here. And these songs start out quicker. The vocals come in quicker, you know, because they were they were really going for a but this song's cool. I'm laughing at you enough as long as you can't. That's how we treat each other. Listen to this chorus, man. This chorus is cool. Okay, so right now we're four songs in. And I'm and I'm saying, you know, three out of four is good right now. Breaking the Law, it's catchy, and you know, it's a I I don't know if I'd call it a fan favorite. It's like it's like uh it's just like the trooper, it's a song they're always gonna play.
SPEAKER_04You know, whether you're a Rethold kind of song, just throw it in there because the crowd gets into it.
SPEAKER_01But they always they're always gonna play Breaking the Law. I don't know that they'll ever skip that one. So then there's a next song called United. And this is the song. Yeah, this is the one that Melissa's friend probably made a large group of people never ever want to hear Jews Priest ever again for. It's a terrible, terrible song. I hate it. Like it's like they were going for an anthem. Like they were trying to make a a we will rock you or a we are the champions or something. I think they were trying to copy Queen in this instance. I hate that. I I I was listening to this song and just laughing and thinking, imagine uh, you know, a coach getting his like 15, 16, 17-year-old guys ready for a football game and he's playing. He's playing this. Let's just skip the chorus. There's a cool guitar line in here somewhere. But here we go. Imagine playing this to a bunch of teenagers.
SPEAKER_04I don't mind these corns.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_04It was cringe a little second ago.
SPEAKER_01Oh, well, I hate it. I think it's a terrible song.
SPEAKER_04The lead up to it I didn't like.
SPEAKER_01Sorry, I'm that's funny that you like what I the part I do like is what you don't like. That's funny. Oh, is that right? You like that part leading up to it? It's better. It's bet I think it's better. Um but yeah, I just to me, let me rephrase. Terrible song, it's it's just not what I want from Judas Priest. I'll put it that way. It's probably a good song for somebody else. Uh then there's a song called You Don't Have to Be Old to Be Wise that comes on, and I think that's a pretty cool song. So now we're six songs in, and I've gotten, you know, two that I really don't like. Now let's get to number seven. Tell me when this riff hits if you think I'll like it.
SPEAKER_00Why would you not? Let's let the vocals kick in then. Yeah, I know it's not.
SPEAKER_01There's one cool part in this song. I hate it. I hate that. It's it's when I went and saw Judas Priest the last time I ever saw them, which is probably five years ago now. Four four years ago, yeah. I was so into everything they were playing until that song. When that song came on, it was like I just went and I just stood there. I didn't sing along with one word of it. I was just like, I hate this song. I it's all it's real uh upbeat and um major key feel. I hate it. I like the line where he goes, load it dun dun dun dun dun loaded. That's cool, but other than that, I'm just like I never want to hear that song. So there were two songs on this album. Generally, you know, the studio versions I don't like it.
SPEAKER_04Okay, but you say that it's that you don't like that song. Do you consider it a bad song or just a song you don't like?
SPEAKER_01I definitely don't like it.
SPEAKER_04I I understand that, but do you see it?
SPEAKER_01There's a lot of people that like it because maybe maybe they're sheep. I don't know, you know? They just uh I mean I I listen to Judas Priest, but I don't I don't mind that song. That's why. That's why. If you were a big fan of the band, you'd be like, yeah, it's a little much, whatever. So then there's there's a song called The Rage next, and The Rage is really good. Stealer's really good, the next one. And then they close the song. I don't know if this is on the actual version or not. This might be a bonus track. There's a song called Red, White, and Blue. Let me play a snippet of it.
SPEAKER_02Sounds cool. I don't start, right? You don't? That sounds kind of cool.
SPEAKER_04I don't understand what it's trying to do.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Wait till you you're not gonna like it more when you hear what it's trying to do.
SPEAKER_01Shite.
SPEAKER_04Isn't it it sounds like um it's like they're trying to do a song or something.
SPEAKER_01It's like they're trying to Yeah, it does actually. It's like they're trying to do, but it's like it's trying to be a patriotic American type sounding song. It's horrible. I don't care for that. I don't think that was on the original album, but it's on my iTunes version. And then there's a really good version of Grinder Live as well. So okay. So the next album that came out after that, right? That's the Actually, let's uh Yeah, the next album that came out after that was Point of Entry. And that's one that I really don't have an opinion on either because I just it opens up with Heading Out to the Highway, which was on Priest Live, and I think Heading Out to the Highway is an awesome song. Listen to how it opens up and and just how great the opening line of this song is.
SPEAKER_02Listen to this.
SPEAKER_04What is this called?
SPEAKER_01It's called It's called Heading Out to the Highway.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I didn't let the riff at the start, but I liked it once it moved on.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, it kicked. Then there's a song called Don't Go, and I listened to it enough times to where I kind of thought, well, it's got a little bit of a catchy chorus. And I've there's a lot of negative things I've said about this next song before. But compared to listening to um some of the other songs on this album and some of the stuff on uh you know uh what I what was the other one we were just talking about? Breaking the Law and Living After Midnight, Hot Rockin' comes on. And I've always said hot rockin''s a terrible song. It's got I'm just gonna say it this way, it's got one of the gayest music videos of all time. They're all like in the shower and then then they're in the gym pumping iron and stuff, and it just it just cut I mean now granted, you got Rob Halford in the band. So I mean, you know, it it it doesn't it it's not far-fetched of a video for him to be in, you know. It's Aaron Brazil. It's just a terrible video. It's just you watch it and you're like, this is supposed to be a heavy metal leather wearing band, tough looking, you know, whatever, and then here they are the you know, it's I thought it was really bad, but this week I got I I caught myself singing along and kind of enjoying it. And I thought, you know what? This song's way better than that um United, United, United, we stand. I was like, ugh. Now then there's a song called Turning Circles. And I remember there was an episode of a podcast with a guy named George and a guy named Tom. The disappearing Tom at times. Yeah. And um maybe the peeping Tom, who knows? But um my friend Dan from the Aussie podcast was on there talking about this specific song, Turning Circles. And I remember thinking, I like, okay, the song Don't Go, track two, I didn't remember it at all. I I like it started playing, I was like, I have no recollection of ever hearing this, even though I know I've played this album before. Turning Circles came on, and it was the same. I thought, I don't know, but I'm just gonna play it. Let's see, you can get your opinion on it. Just wait. It gets worse. This almost felt like it'd be a like a laser or something or something.
SPEAKER_02No, no, you gotta get to the chords though. You maybe go to the end of the chords.
SPEAKER_01That was listening to something like the melodies here are like okay. I don't hate them. It's just the whole vibe of the music. Like now here comes the chords. This is this. listening to that episode a bit and Dan going on about how much he liked turning circles. And I just thought this song sucks. Well, you know what? I've never written one better, but considering some of the caliber of music Judas Priest has put out, this is garbage. Okay, next song is Desert Plains. Desert Plains is pretty good. I love Desert Plains. Solar Angels. Um let's see what Solar Angels sounds like. I'm slipping my mind. Okay. That's sounding all right so far.
SPEAKER_03Oh, wait. Okay. This is a good one. Solar Angels is good. Here's one the next one's called You Say Yes.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Wait till you hear the chorus. If you like fast forward here.
SPEAKER_02Let's get to the chorus. Here we go. Chorus.
SPEAKER_01I say no as well. Aren't you glad?
SPEAKER_04This sounds like all the generic bands.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Yeah. Okay, the next song's called All the Way. I don't even remember. It almost sounds like a kiss riff.
SPEAKER_04I was just thinking, hang on. It's gonna be two. Is it is it?
SPEAKER_01I don't know which riff, but I just because mostly when I was listening to this album, I just it doesn't matter, it's that big. Trying to get to the chorus. Where is the chorus? Here comes the chorus. That just sounds like a generic 70s band that was a rock band, like a you know, it almost sounds like it could be a Leonard Skinner song. That chorus.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I know what you may I don't know enough that wouldn't be Skinner to compare it to that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, here's another. It's the next song called Troubleshooter. It sounds like it's trying to be living after midnight already, with just a little bit different beat. Let's see what this chorus sounds like.
SPEAKER_02Come on, chorus, where's it at?
SPEAKER_01Okay, this is the chorus. I actually kind of think this chorus sounds okay. But I'll say I like it better than um the song I just mentioned that it sounds like.
SPEAKER_04What year is this album?
SPEAKER_0181. Okay, then there's uh On the Run. I'm having to play these because I just can't remember them. I've played it, I listened to this album. Okay, I do remember this kind of beat. It's a little better than some of the other ones.
SPEAKER_04I don't mind this.
SPEAKER_01Because the bass is kind of driving it. Okay, the last song is this: Thunder Rosen.
SPEAKER_02I don't really like that. Yeah, let's get to the lyrics.
SPEAKER_01Oh! I remember when I heard this, I immediately thought, this sounds like it would be on Ramit Down. Oh my god, yeah. This might be a maybe this is a bonus track from that era. I'm gonna ask for uh the Hopeless Romantic to give some feedback on all this. But this sounds like it would have been this song would have fit perfectly on Ram It Down.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I can hear that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But I don't know, it's not the worst thing there, you know. Then there's a live version of Desert Plains to end it on here, and it's really, really, really fast. So then I thought, okay. British Steel's better than I give you know have given it credit for. Point of entry is absolutely just considering that it's right before screaming for vengeance, oh my god. What a y- They were turned they must have been turned in circles when when they got the reception to that album. So then I was like, okay, what what what came out, um alright. What came out before what do you call this? Before point of entry, uh before British Steel, okay. So you got Hellbent for Leather. That's the album that came out before it. So I was like, okay. Let me listen to Hellbet for Leather. Um Hellbet for Leather, just don't even say anything. I'm just gonna start it off delivering the goods, okay? Check this out. You you're gonna like this. You ready? You probably heard if you've heard this, because where I heard this the first time is gonna make you laugh. And like I said, this is from the album before British Steel. This is what I think they went into their their mode of shorter songs and stuff like that.
SPEAKER_02I'll get to the chorus.
SPEAKER_03And then it gets on.
SPEAKER_02And I'll tell you where I heard it for the first time after I played the chorus.
SPEAKER_00You ever heard this before? I didn't realize what it was till now.
SPEAKER_01Yeah? I want to see if if you know this song from where I heard it the first time. Where do you know it?
SPEAKER_04Pretty soon. I don't. Betty, you're gone.
SPEAKER_01The first time I ever heard this song was on an album called Besides Ourselves by Ah, Skid Row.
SPEAKER_04You know what? That's right.
SPEAKER_01That's probably where I heard it first, but I didn't realize it because it was the reason I wanted to hear it because it was because it had Rob Halford on it. I was like, oh, I gotta hear it's the first time I'd ever heard delivering the goods the song, you know. At least I think. I don't know. Maybe. I can't remember.
SPEAKER_04I'd seen uh I'd seen it on a video doing this live. I just can't remember where.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they were on they were playing, so it's really good. I mean, you know.
SPEAKER_04Oh hang on, it was him. Him and Halford.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they were together. Yeah, they were. Yeah, because he had uh because they did they did a kiss song on that album and they did a rush song on there, and but they did, you know, the the the priest song was the live version with with Halford. So uh so this album has uh Delivering the Goods, Rock Forever, which I think is really good. Evening Star, I'm not the biggest fan of, but it's okay.
SPEAKER_04I like that song.
SPEAKER_01Okay, but then uh I used to have a Judas Priest uh D not a DVD, a video cassette. And I used to have my VCR hooked up to my TV, and every morning this would be the song that would the TV would come on, and then this song would play, and it would be my alarm every morning. And I think this is like a killer, killer song. The title track for the American version.
SPEAKER_03You don't know what this is yet? Oh, one of their best. Oh, white light thing.
SPEAKER_02You'll know it when he sings a chorus.
SPEAKER_01You find the live version from their uh video cassette that came out in like nine Metalworks, I think is what it was called, or Metology or whatever. Oh, and it's got Scott Travis on drums. Oh, it's so good. It's when he rides that on the motorcycle and revs it all up, and oh, it's really good.
SPEAKER_04I I did not pick that song at all. I didn't like the sound of this. I've heard a lot before I didn't mind it.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I think Helvet Fullette is awesome, yeah. Then there's a song on here called So So right now, Evening Star is okay to me. I don't really I know you said you like it, but I don't really, I've never been that big of a fan of that. Um Then there's Take on the World. You know that one? I need to hear it. Well, evening Star, I do remember. I was hoping you wouldn't say that.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_03This is Take On the World. Get up, up on your feet.
SPEAKER_01I can't I'm not sure exactly what you're saying, but like this part really isn't that good. But if you think this isn't good, here comes the chorus. Is that enough?
SPEAKER_04Uh yeah, I was good. Thank you for that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that song's pretty bad. It's it's almost like United to me. It's it's it's like they're uh they're uh another their let's let's make an anthem. Let's get an anthem.
SPEAKER_04What's the song? Is it Ant the Cold? No, what was the song? Yeah, I know. It almost sounds like the trouble coming in, and I can't remember that or a tough remote.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm I'm I'm I'm not reminding me that I'm drawing a point on that right now. So the next song is called Burn and Up. I wanna play it real quick. I don't want to keep all the way to the Blood Ray Sky. I think it was gonna remind me of this. Oh Blood Red Sky is an awesome song. Oh yeah. Comparing it to that one, golly, man. Apologize apologize to no one.
SPEAKER_03That sounds pretty cool.
SPEAKER_00Actually, I don't think it does.
SPEAKER_04This sounds like generic literary.
SPEAKER_01I like some of how he's singing here, not all of it. It's not fair what I think because Oh! I do remember this got this cool chorus, listen to this drum.
SPEAKER_05We've got to make a look tonight.
SPEAKER_01I'm not so happy about the lyrics, but that's a cool set of songs. Then of course, everybody, I think anybody would know this next one. Well, hang on. You said this is 81? Yeah. Wait, no, this is no no, we're back in 79 now. 78, this is 78.
SPEAKER_04So in that case, when I said this sounds generic, it will do in about five or six years, but now I realize that this is like what the sounding like this. For them then it's good.
SPEAKER_01Sure, sure. And the next song is a is a Fleetwood Mac song. You know that one, right?
SPEAKER_04Uh I will do, I just kind of think.
SPEAKER_01It's called The Green Man Alicia with the two-pronged crown. I thought this song was a lot longer. It's only like three and a half minutes long. They pack a lot into it.
SPEAKER_05Bam bam dun dun dun dun dun dun dun.
SPEAKER_01This riff here. Like, music's cool. I mean, there that's a that's a fantastic. They made that their own. They definitely made that their own. Uh Killing Machine is next. Running Wild is really good. Oh, and then uh there's a song I sang at karaoke last night. Next. Beautiful song. You know this one? Is this called? Before the dawn. It's and it's such a great song. And it's got a great guitar solo. I think I might I might just play the whole thing. Let's just listen.
unknownBefore the dawn.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I've been this. Oh, I love it.
unknownI can you whisper.
SPEAKER_01I brought it back into the live set for myself last night. I wasn't in quite the shape to sing it very well, but To do it justice. To do it as- I didn't I didn't butcher it, but I didn't. I I I really should have just been completely stone cold sober for that. Because it's it's such a great song. When the guitar solo kicks in though, it's just so perfect. It's it's like everything's so soft and pretty here.
unknownSpare.
SPEAKER_01Great melodies. This is the song I sang at karaoke one time, and when I got done, I sat down, the lady behind me goes, Well, that was depressing.
unknownWait too long.
SPEAKER_01It's a sad song.
unknownNow you need me.
SPEAKER_01Just listen to when this guitar solo kicks in. So awesome. Just how how big it hits and the tone and everything.
SPEAKER_04Makes me think of Prisoner of the Girls.
SPEAKER_01Sure. But that's a that's got a to me, that solo has a real Adrian Smith vibe about it, you know? I believe it's Glenn Tifton. Okay. I won't play the rest of the song there. Um, and unfortunately after that, there's a song called Evil Fantasies that I think is really rough. I don't like it. And then the the last song is called Fight for Your Life. I don't know if that's on the actual album or if it's a extra bonus cut, because I'm not sure. I'm assuming Evil Fantasies would have been the album Ender, but So lastly, okay. It was a struggle listening to Hellbet for Leather, Point of Entry, and um British Steel through the week because there's some fantastic songs on each one of those albums. But there's also some really just weak songs, especially you know, for Judas Priest, weak. And so then I was like I mean, I I would listen to an album like two or three times and I'd just be like, God, I don't want to play it again. I don't want to listen to anything now. I just want to sulk, you know? And so I I got to where I thought, you know what? Let me go one album before that and see what Judas Priest was coming in with before that, right? So I got to a very famous Judas Priest album called Stained Class. Listen how that album opens.
SPEAKER_03The drums sound awesome on this album.
SPEAKER_01The drums were recorded really well. Like you can hear all these Tom fills, he does really good. But imagine hearing an album that opens like this and then hearing like take on the world. Jeez. I love this next line, cut. Not that one. Oh, I missed it. It's on the next chorus. This line was fall to your knees and repent if you please. So Exciter opens the album. White Heat, Red Hot is the second song. That's really, really good as well. Uh, Better by You, Better Than Me, which is the song that I believe it's one of the songs where they, you know, talked about in court uh when they when they had the court case.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um which is a cover song, it's not even their song. Um really good. Uh the song the the title track is next, stained class. That song. Oh, it's incredible. It's so good. I love it. Invader, next, really good. Saints in Hell, really good. Savage, really good. Beyond the Realms of Death. You ever heard that?
SPEAKER_04Oh, that's really, really good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, let's just listen to a bit of that for a second. That's it's another one of the it's more like it's closer to before the dawn, I'd say, than this. Uh-oh. This is something you close your eyes and get lost in. Golly. Guitar.
SPEAKER_00This guitar's awesome in this. This is this, I will say, this is a perfect yeah, I was gonna say textbook perfect.
SPEAKER_01Yes. The melodies, the music. The dark vibe that it because of the music is, you know. That the music's presenting.
SPEAKER_05Slam the door.
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_04It's not like the music's good, but then rubs nobody's bad, or vice versa.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, this this this this has to be I mean, I've never ranked their songs. And this scream here. I'm safe here in my mind.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna fast forward. Um I like the way it just pulls back into this.
SPEAKER_01I know. Okay, I'm gonna get into the guitar solo.
SPEAKER_02Oh, wait. Oh, wait, I didn't get you. Here we go.
SPEAKER_03This is this is a good glance, so melt. Oh no. He's definitely the Adrian Smith of the band. At least in playing.
SPEAKER_01Not personality so much.
SPEAKER_02Oh no.
SPEAKER_04I can keep listening. You know what? He's just increasing that scale.
SPEAKER_01I love how he does that. He holds that note for like two measures or whatever. Scratch. The the dupe the like the layered Rob Halford vocal here. I love it. Unfortunately, there's two more minutes left. I'm just deposited. God, that so listening to this album, you know. Hero's End is a good song. And here's what I'm gonna play you, okay? I could swear that I played this album before and I hated this song. So when I saw that this was the closing track and I was like, oh god, really? I'm gonna play. It's called Fire. You won't have to really guess what it's about. Fire Burns Below. This sounds kind of cool.
SPEAKER_00It's reminding me of you know Turbo with Randanium.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Yeah, I can I could see that you would draw on something for the past from the past.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03The melodies are cool. I was going I'm listening and I'm going, well, so far I kinda like it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the the off drumming is cool.
SPEAKER_04It reminds you like like in the 80s when you do watch movies before.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, you know, I didn't ever think about it, but yeah, I could almost hear this on one of those albums. Really honestly, more ram it down.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's in the steamy thing.
SPEAKER_01The fire's burning below, right?
SPEAKER_04Well, not not lyrically, just musically is what it's going to be of.
SPEAKER_01But that's I heard that song and I mean listened to it and I thought, man, I'm really like, I really like that song. Like I've every I've listened to this album, other than listening to Pink Floyd yesterday with my wife in the car. I mean, I knew she wasn't going to want to listen to Stay in Class, the album. But I was like, wow, this album is it's an incredible album. I mean, it's top to bottom. I mean, I don't maybe love every single song as much as I love certain songs, but God, it's a great album. And I'm like, then they went into Hellbet for Leather and British Steel and Point of Entry. And I thought fans must have been thinking, or maybe they're, you know, like us back in the day, like, oh hey, it's a new Judas Priest, I'm cool. Instead of good really, you know, like like we thought with Fear of the Dark or something.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But like it was a decline happening. Like they made this album and it was a peak. And then they did, you know, the next album, it wasn't as good. Hell Bent for Leather. Had some great songs, but it was like they peaked out and then they would put terrible songs, peaked, terrible, which is very, very the Judas Priest formula at times. Like they'll have really great songs mixed with just hodgepodge of mediocre. And I was just like, God, but just imagine how great this album was, and then you go and you get those next three, and you know, over the course of a couple of years, and you're like, oh my gosh. Man, I and then you get and then Screaming for Vengeance comes out, you know, eventually. And yeah, they write the shit big time right there. But um, I I listened to Stain Class at least, at least ten times this week. Like I was just, it would get done, and and you know, fire burns below, and then it would be uh Better by You, Better Than Me. There's a live version at the end. And uh I would listen to that and just I'd play it again. And it was the it was the one album out of the four uh priest albums I listened to that I wanted to just keep playing over and over. I was like, God, this album is so good. I'm pretty sure Outback is a big fan of um of this album as well. So but yeah, I I didn't go any further. That's that's where I stopped. And I know I've probably been talking about this priest right now for 40 minutes or something, but but man, it was uh this album is absolutely in my rotation now. Uh it's never I I never had it before where it was like, oh, this is a must-listen album. But now if I'm gonna go like I've got to have my must-listen priest albums, I'm gonna go, okay, Painkiller, Screaming for Vengeance, Defenders of the Faith, Turbo, uh, and this one. And then, of course, uh, I have one other album that is in my wheelhouse as well, which is uh Sad Wings of Destiny, I believe, as well, is in there too. Really good album. But that's all the priests I listened to, so but I'm happy because I really, really discovered how great stained class was this week. And it's just so bizarre with Judas Priest, you know? They're checkered. Very checkered.
SPEAKER_04Even high highs, but then man, this is Judas Priest. Yeah, sometimes it's what I think.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yeah. It's it's like um look, I'll as much as I as much as I've said about Die With Your Boots On, Die With Your Boots On isn't near the letdown that some of these songs are in comparison, you know. Like Quest for Fire, yeah. Quest for Fire is about as Judas Priesty as Maiden really got, I'd say. Just bad, you know. But but it was uh like I said, very welcome to uh put stained class have stained class, like, and I'm I want to hear it like right now, like I want to listen to it right now. So um I imagine when I go to work tomorrow, that's the first album I'll play again next week. So um any podcast, Matthew?
SPEAKER_04Uh as I mentioned, I had to listen to last week's waffle. Yeah. And other than that, you know, I don't know that I did a quickly scrambling. I wasn't ready for you to come back and tell me.
SPEAKER_01Um well I hadn't I I didn't listen to any.
SPEAKER_04No, um I I did listen to a few the week before, but not so much this week. Okay. Oh no, nothing.
SPEAKER_01Well, why don't we just do thank yous then? All these people. We thank all these people who share, you know? At least I do. Um so last week again. Not get I don't mean again post right now. I mean just um last week we had a waffle that came out, as you mentioned. That's all the only episode we had, and um we're very, very brief um disclosure here. We are talking about um some format changes coming up a little bit, just small format changes. So hopefully uh that'll start next month. So changes for me?
SPEAKER_04Maybe for Matt changes.
SPEAKER_01Four, yeah, exactly. They are for you too. They are for you as well.
SPEAKER_04So I'll be back in a month.
SPEAKER_01No, no, no, no. So this week on the waffle zone is what it reads. Yeah. One, other bands discussed. Two, praising the behemoth. That is Bill. Three, speaking of Doomie. Four, wallowing in it. Five, and I'm I'm really curious to hear your take on this next one, just based on what it's about. Five, Bruno's influence. And he's a man who wields a lot of influence. You noticed that, right? Yeah, rightly so. But you know why? Tell me. I I just didn't know if you'd picked I I guess maybe you weren't picking up what I was putting down, but it's like Bruno suggests that I listen to something. I mean, I'm picking it up usually within the week.
SPEAKER_04Uh, you know, yes, I did notice that now you mentioned that. Yeah, you mentioned you allude, actually you strongly alluded, you flat out said it last week. I recall now, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Someone will drop a nugget or something. I was like straight on it. Like, isn't it funny that Matt suggests things that I just never ever dry humping all sorts of ideas, and if I put something out there, I get nothing. That's hilarious.
SPEAKER_01Uh, but you know, you gotta give, you know, it's Bruno compared to you. I mean, who would you listen to?
SPEAKER_04I mean, it's Bruno compared to most. Yes, exactly. Yeah, good day, Bruno.
SPEAKER_01So uh the behemoth that is Bruno, if you will. So many behemoths on this podcast. Yes. 666, 7 Bloodied Hopes, and sp eight. Speaking of Lord Andrew. Another great man. Yes, another well, yeah, for sure. Uh oh, you said well, like you were gonna counter me in some way. Well, his Pink Floyd opinions disappointed me a little bit. He hasn't really ri he didn't respond. I mean, we we spoke a lot of him last week, and I threw some opinions about him out there that I wondered if they were true or not. Then what does that say? The fact that he didn't reply to you. A no reply means I was right. That's what I'm taking.
SPEAKER_04I don't know. I mean, nothing further needs to be said.
SPEAKER_01That's what he probably thought. Yeah, he's probably like enough of this uh carpet bagger. Enough of this oblong uh maybe he thought he's what we could skip. Yeah, exactly. So uh the reposts were done, and we thank these people. His royal dudeness, Dave in the USA. Uh um Doomy MacDoombutt, uh Jesse the Riff Wiser. Maybe we should call him the wiser riff, the wiser riffer. The wisest riff. Yeah, the there we go. Uh oh wow. Look, here's one. Lucas in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Someone you you almost met. Yeah. I was only feet away. You were only feet away and you never met him.
SPEAKER_04No, I didn't get to meet him.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04What are you gonna do in that situation?
SPEAKER_01I mean, yeah, I guess. Yeah, I guess. Cursed the all night long. All night long. You're just another you're just another Australian to him, you know. Well, I was, yeah. I'm just part of the makeup of the population when I'm there. The uh the the pot the uh the quiet quoting behemoth, that is Gen Maritani, and she would just. Oh, the only man to have his own episodes on uh he demand he commanded those, I mean, he commandeered those really. Uh he did. Not verbally, just he took over. With his material. Yes.
SPEAKER_04His material demanded it.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. Yeah. Um our friend uh who would probably be considered the number one fan of JFK in Finland, Matthew. Yo, villa. The uh uh the the guy who we uh alluded to earlier, who hopefully we get a quick from next week with probably lots of corrections, corrective action on me. Um, the hopeless romantic of the podcast that Matt always likes to ask about.
SPEAKER_04Well, it's cooking.
SPEAKER_01Our uh our friend and fellow uh host of the podcast who's not here this week, Matt Kirsty Prince first. Good night, Kirst. Yeah. The man who addresses in a moment the aforementioned, uh not aforementioned this week, but last week, that everyone's waiting for, the official Matthew biography, Simeon in France. Yeah, he tells me what to do. Actually, no, he didn't tell me he begged. He got you to l he's the only guy. Uh I think that's true. He's like your Bruno for me.
SPEAKER_04He is.
SPEAKER_01I begged you to listen to Alice and Chains and Couldn't do it. And and him, but Simeon gave me a good choice. Simeon says it once, and you're on it.
SPEAKER_04Ah, he's a nice blake though.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So I know where I'm at in the pecking order, just like you know where you're at in the pecking order with you and Bruno.
SPEAKER_04It's like I said, he's a nice blake, old Simeon.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. And lastly, Matthew. Silicav and Alice Springs. So here we go, Matt. We have uh three quijotes. And then we're out of here. Right on time. Right on time. First of all, the aforementioned Gen, Mario Tani, and Cheap of Japan. Don't think you're going anywhere just yet, Matthew. Oh, okay, yeah. There's about six par seven eight, nine paragraphs here. And I was really Yeah, I know it's a short one. I was really happy to see this one given what we just spent so much time talking about. Kirsty Prince Living in a Bad Dream talk made me wonder how it sounded. But I ended up listening to the entire Painkiller album. Man, what a masterpiece it is. I think Painkiller was a monumental album in many ways. It showcased their new musical style, created a new prototype, and evolved them as musicians and as a band. It was clear that they wanted to take a more aggressive direction on Ramit Down, but drum limitations held them back, leading them to use a drum machine. Hard as Iron hinted at their ambition's new style, but they couldn't fully achieve it yet. Good point. Yeah. I didn't like the I don't like the chorus, but man, the melodies and the verses on that song are great. Enter Scott Travis. With his double kicks and fast fills, he brought a whole new energy and aggression. He showed exactly what he brought to the table right from track one, Painkiller. What impresses me most is that despite his technical background in Racer X, he kept his playing disciplined in Priest. He has the technical skills, but more importantly, he knows what serves the song. I was gonna say that him and Nico reminded me each other until I read that paragraph. Nico serves the song, I mean, because he makes him really technical, but he sometimes I felt like he went a little overboard. But it's the only thing we ever know of him, so that the songs do sound correct. The title track became the blueprint for Modern Priest. Every album since has featured at least one fast heavy track driven by double kicks: Hellrider, Nostradamus, Metalizer, Firepower, and As God is my witness. Just to name a few. We almost expect it now. Even when Rob returned to Metal, his comeback album, Resurrection, was clearly inspired by Painkiller. Yeah, definitely. Just with a more modern sound. The evolution wasn't just on drums. Rob added a new level of grit and aggression. He used his high register screams more frequently than on previous albums, adding a raspier edge. In the 70s and 80s, his high notes were cleaner, but here they're pure aggression. This shift in his singing style lasted until this day. And I will say, um, listening to uh stained class a lot this week, that paragraph right there made a lot more sense to me because I took that from stained class and thought, wow, that makes a lot of sense. Then there's Glenn and KK's guitar work. Judas Priest has always evolved from the bluesy psychedelic rockerola to the dramatic hard rock of sad wings through Killing Machine, which is also hell bent for leather, um, to defining 80s heavy metal with British steel and defenders of the faith and some adventurous experiments with turbo and ram it down. Painkiller built on all of that and took them to another level. Some called it a thrash metal album, but to me it isn't. There were certainly in they were certainly inspired by Thrash and Shrapnel styled technical metal, but at their core, they remained a pure heavy metal band. What blows me away is how Glenn and KK continuously updated their playing. When Van Halen popularized tapping in 78, Glenn was already using it on Killing Machine. By the late 80s, as technical guitarists emerged, they adopted economy picking, sweet picking, and fast arpeggios. It almost sounds like he knows what he's talking about, Matt, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_04I don't know what to understand.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. They were always eager to learn and adapt, which later led to Jugulator and Demolition. The amazing thing is how seamlessly they blended these techniques into their music. On Painkiller, their solos are long, especially Glenn's. Songs feature multiple solo sections, surprisingly rich dual guitar harmonies. Glenn's solos are extensive, yet they never get boring. It feels like a guitar player kid saying, Hey guys, check out this new technique I just learned. You can easily feel his excitement. You can really feel his excitement, sorry. Uh last paragraph. Painkiller might be the only priest album with and I think we'll I think I explained this a little earlier, Matt. The only priest album with zero filler. My personal favorite is still Defenders of the Faith, as I mentioned last week. But Painkiller is perfection from start to finish, just like Uncle Steve said. Very well said, Gen. Especially that last paragraph. Next up, the official biographer of our favorite son here, Matthew. A small update on Matt's biography. Have you heard this? I don't know about this. Uh-oh, get ready. It's almost done. And I am waiting to write the chapter where Matt's listen where Matt listens to Sen Jutsu. And then he wrote, I shouldn't take long.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, time's on your side.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, exactly. Exactly. So we're all anxiously awaiting, Simeon. We're all anxiously awaiting. Are we though? Okay. Well, yeah, we are.
SPEAKER_04I I don't think the masses are waiting for anything.
SPEAKER_01You know what? I just had an idea.
SPEAKER_04It's probably not a good one.
SPEAKER_01Since Simeon is is to you what Bruno is to me, maybe Simeon. Yeah, I can't hear you now. Maybe Simeon. Hello. Okay, everyone else can hear me. Maybe Simeon should recommend you listening to uh Senjutsu. If you can hear me, I probably won't listen to this part during the weight. Alright. The last one, Matthew. Sorry, I can hear you again. There we are. I'm back. I'm back. The last one here is from Bruno McDonald. Ah, Larry. He's the greatest. The aforementioned the Behemoth, that is, Bruno McDonald. And uh I think this is the last one. We're gonna call it the last one. If I miss any, I'll just read them next week. Bruno McDonald says. I'm not sure how I made it into the chapter titles for this waffle, but there can surely be no higher honor until I get the number one position, of course. Or Steal Bill's behemoth title. That's a toughie. You know, I'm very uh you know, I I listen to Bruno. His track record right now is pretty good.
SPEAKER_04Are you shifting? Are you shifting the title?
SPEAKER_01You have to wait until the queek vote happens for the waffle this week. Billy, Billy. And think about it, they both start with the letter B as well, so the Bruno behemoth or the Bill behemoth, they both it rolls off the tongue.
SPEAKER_04Well, they are on different continents, so perhaps they could co co-behemoth. They could coexist.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Let's see, which sounds better to you, Matt. Your behemoth Bill or your behemoth Bruno. And we know we know which one is a bigger ace Fraley fan. Oh, okay. So now I'm starting to feel a little bit of the tug of the sway. There might be a change in the winds, a shifting of the winds. We might be turning circles here, Matt. You start a civil war here. We don't want that. Oh man. We'll see. We'll see. I mean, Bill hasn't said anything, you know.
SPEAKER_04Heavy is the heavy is the head that wears the crown.
SPEAKER_01That's uh yeah, that's what they say. Um oh, speaking of that, let me um one last quick thing for you, Matthew.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I went and did karaoke last night.
SPEAKER_04Oh, here we go. This is the 20 minutes I've been waiting for.
SPEAKER_01There was there was there was a lot of people singing.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And I wasn't in as great of a voice last night because of my state.
SPEAKER_04Are you garnering a bit of a crowd now?
SPEAKER_01Oh no, no, no. So I did uh I did four songs. One of them I sent a message to Kirsty and to uh Villa letting them know that this next one I was gonna do was dedicated to somebody. I started out with a song called Time by Pink Floyd that you I don't know if you've ever would have heard it or not. You probably would have heard it.
SPEAKER_04I have heard that it's got a little tuck clock ticking.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04The little clock ticking is what I was drawing aside. Did you say just keep moving on?
SPEAKER_01Okay, uh hopefully you didn't invert those words in a way that I might have you might be. I didn't hear it, so if I didn't hear it, it didn't happen.
SPEAKER_04Alright, I didn't do it if it was anyway.
SPEAKER_01Then the second song I told you was the aforementioned uh Before the Dawn that I played you a bit earlier. The next song I did was the one dedicated to Doomy McDoomba. I first time ever I sang Turbo Lover. Okay, yeah. And lastly, I I don't know how I ended up here, but I ended up closing my singing night with a song by a band called Collective Soul.
SPEAKER_04Oh, I know them.
SPEAKER_01And uh it's a pretty cool song. It's called Heavy. Uh you're not familiar with that?
SPEAKER_04No, I I know of them and I've I've heard some stuff, but I don't know much about them right.
SPEAKER_01Okay, well, uh let me just play you a snippet of how that song goes, just to change it up a little here. Um this is what's a big song by them? Heaven Let's Your Light Shine Down? Yeah, there you go. I didn't know you know that one? Um, but this is the one that I did last night. I think it's a pretty cool one. It's a short song, too. I didn't do it very well because it was at the end of my night. Cheers, everybody.
