SPEAKER_06I guess we can get started. I do have a s I do have a story I have to tell you, so.
SPEAKER_05You do?
SPEAKER_06I do have a story I have to tell you. It's kind of a kind of something that'll crack you up. You want to hear it?
SPEAKER_05Oh, I think you meant for the pod. Yeah, you tell me now.
SPEAKER_06Okay, I'll tell you. Hello and welcome to the waffle zone. My name is Uncle Steve, and uh on the line with me, uh, the guy who wasn't available last night, uh, as well as uh well, nobody else, but I got Matt on the line. How are you doing, Matt? Hello, how are we? I mean, Kirsty Prince also wasn't available last night, so so we're recording this like, you know, uh basically we might finish this before this episode's supposed to be out, hopefully, you know.
SPEAKER_05We'll see.
SPEAKER_06So, anyway, about that story I was telling you.
SPEAKER_05Um I was eating a cookie, you just bent checked on that.
SPEAKER_06So I I went to my friend Jimmy's house yesterday. Jimmy? Yeah, he's a friend of mine. He's uh I I I swear he's a friend of mine, I promise. I had to I had a uh I had a uh concert shirt that I had bought him that I wanted to bring by. What concert you'll find out. And um when I walked into his house, what did I hear? But I heard Matthew's voice. He was listening to the podcast when I got there. And I heard him talking. I heard your voice coming out of the speaker, and I was like, Making stop. I said, dude, you're a glutton for punishment, man. And then I heard my voice and I was like, oh god, yeah, I get it. He's like, I go, you gotta turn that off, man. Is he warming up for you coming around? He didn't know I was on the way. I just it was a surprise visit. That's kind of worrisome. Because what do we like and what do we not get a lot of in life the older we get, Matt? Common sense. And what do we love? The lack of common sense. What do we love to get, Matt? What's something that you love to get?
SPEAKER_05Just say the word.
SPEAKER_06You know the word. Come on, say it.
SPEAKER_05I have no idea what you're referring to.
SPEAKER_06You're worrying me, to be honest. When you get older, there's something you like to get in life that you just don't really get a lot anymore because because when you're a kid, you get lots of them, you know. Maybe open at a present or you know, something like that. But when you're an adult, you don't get as many toys surprises, you ding-dong. You do you here's here's my imitation. Here's my imitation of Matt. Let me humor myself and not say the word I know he's talking about the whole time. Am I right?
SPEAKER_08Am I right, Matt? Hello ice.
SPEAKER_06But yeah, I went in his house and I heard your voice, and I was just like, oh my god. He wasn't just on. This is a different, this is somebody you've never met. I'm like, I got a fan. Matt's got a fan out here listening to him. He's not laying back on the couch, was he?
unknownNice.
SPEAKER_06Just listening to his talking. He was just he was just listening. He said he was just listening to the podcast and hanging out on a Sunday afternoon. I was like, okay, cool, cool.
SPEAKER_05I could think of No, I could think of better things to do with my weekend than listening to the two of us.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, but you know, it's uh but it was fun. I go to go over the because then it was funny because because I had I haven't seen him in a little while.
SPEAKER_05And so he was missing you.
SPEAKER_06He just started asking lots of questions about the podcast. He goes, he was like, oh, cuz because he's he's like going through every episode. Does he like metal? Yeah, he does. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. He's a he's a big metal fan. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, he he actually I'll tell you about that later, actually. He gave me some money for he gave me some money for a t-shirt uh for a show I'm going to. And um, but you know, it was um it was just we because we just sat all we did. We sat and talked about rock and metal and then the podcast.
SPEAKER_05Listening to the podcast.
SPEAKER_06He turned it off. I was going, you got good, dude. You gotta turn that off, man. I can't listen to that.
SPEAKER_05Dude, you can you can you can keep it on. We can talk. You can keep it on.
SPEAKER_06I go, you know what? Let's just listen to it. And if you have any questions if you want, you know, because that'd be like a real, you know, it'd be like the episode I did about with Bill, you know, where he was talking and I would pause it and respond to him and all that.
SPEAKER_05I did enjoy that one. That was a good one.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I know. So but I just wanted to tell you, that's the whole story is I went to his house and I heard your voice coming out of his TV, you know. I was like, man, this dude's famous. Matt's famous. Would you like to say anything to Jimmy right now?
SPEAKER_05Ah, Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy. There's plenty, there's plenty of pots out there, my friend. Go find them. Go find them. You'll probably even find a good one out there somewhere if you look hard enough.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05So we should say thank you. Oh, absolutely. And if you're interested in joining Patreon, Jimmy.
SPEAKER_06He has talked to me about it before. I'm like, yeah, you probably don't want to be on Patreon, Jimmy. He wanted to know what he got for that $10,000 tier. Dude, I'm waiting for someone to sign up for that, man.
SPEAKER_05Well, he had you he's listening to the podcast and you're in his house. He's already got half that experience there.
SPEAKER_06I know, I know. But nothing. You owe me $5,000 now, Jimmy.
SPEAKER_05Sorry, Jimmy.
SPEAKER_06Okay.
SPEAKER_05So uh I'm sure he's good for it. Like Jimmy, seems like he's with the mob.
SPEAKER_06So so let's let's let's let's let's leave Jimmy alone now. I just wanted to I just wanted to tell you tell you that you had a fan in Jimmy. Gone you, Jimmy. Yeah. And um Iron Maiden, I guess, opened their North American tour recently, right?
SPEAKER_05Oh, I wonder if we know anyone who's already seen them yet.
SPEAKER_06Uh I think we know somebody that's been to every single show so far.
SPEAKER_05Oh, is that right?
SPEAKER_06The same person.
SPEAKER_05I'm sure it would be.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah. So um Hello!
SPEAKER_05I wonder if Ace is gonna shout out hello to Hello Mill.
SPEAKER_08Um but yeah.
SPEAKER_05I wonder who's touring with who.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, actually. Maiden checked out Melissa's itinerary, and then they just go where she's gonna be at.
SPEAKER_05So here's a podcast we can follow.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_05Not like one of those other ones that we can skip.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. So let's get into music we listened to. I thought we'd we'll mention that Maiden opened their tour, I guess, back up and they didn't change anything from um what they were doing the last time they played. So I guess I haven't really read anything about it, so other than Melissa saying, Hey, I'm in Toronto. Hey, I'm here now. Hey, I'm here now. I am next to Bruce. I'm on stage. Yeah, exactly. So, um So, Matt. Yes. What music did you listen to in the past eight days? You got an extra day in this week because uh we didn't record on our normal day.
SPEAKER_05You would think, and yet I didn't.
SPEAKER_06Okay, well I did.
SPEAKER_05So So what would a band be, perhaps? If you could name one band that would surprise you to hear that I'd perhaps listen to during the week. Um it came about from talk, I'll give you that much of a hint.
SPEAKER_06From talk? Yeah. I mean, uh I'm not I I'd be shocked if you said Black Label Society. I'm not gonna go back to the case. Oh, yeah, that's not happening.
SPEAKER_05I'll tell you that right.
SPEAKER_06Pink Floyd. It surprised me a little bit if you listen to more Pink Floyd.
SPEAKER_05There was there was a lot of talk about Judas Priest. I did listen to Judas Priest.
SPEAKER_06There you go.
SPEAKER_05And what album would it make you happy to hear that I listened to?
SPEAKER_06Oh, well, of course it would. You know, I guess based on my talk last week, I'd have to say stained class.
SPEAKER_05Hmm. Let's just say it wasn't that painkiller.
SPEAKER_06Uh no, no, no. Oh, so Kirsty didn't influence you either, okay.
SPEAKER_05No, no. I did almost think about it, but no, you gotta lower the the button.
SPEAKER_06Okay, well, I mean I And it is what I've heard before. Being that we had a conversation and I told you I had listened to it already, and then you said, when did you listen to it? Because I was listening to an album right now.
SPEAKER_05I forgot about that.
SPEAKER_06Okay, my Matt. Just just ram it down and tell me what it was.
SPEAKER_05Um it was it was ram it down.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_05All your talk about Judas Priest last week. So this is going back to like Monday, maybe maybe it was Tuesday. I don't remember when I listened to it. Um, I was in the mood to hear Under Blood Red Skies.
SPEAKER_06Oh, yeah. It's a good one.
SPEAKER_05I mean, this album starts out really strong. And it's been a few years since uh really strong, I mean by the first track. And it's been probably a few years since I've listened to this. And it's one that I tried to listen to this in the past and get into it, but I really I can't. I just can't. It's um it's too checky, it's too spotty. It's the first the first track's awesome.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And I must have been really enjoying it. And then I was like, what is this that I'm listening to? And it was like, I don't know if it was heavy metal. I think it was heavy metal. Yeah, it wasn't less. And I thought it was early Def Leopard that I was listening to.
SPEAKER_06It does have a little weird, you know, kind of vibe to it, yeah, at the start.
SPEAKER_05His vocals and all though. What's it sounds like what Joe Elliott used to do?
SPEAKER_06Oh, I never would have thought that, but yeah.
SPEAKER_05Like he wasn't wailing or anything, just the way he was delivering the verses.
SPEAKER_06No uh here, hold on. Let's I have it pulled up right here.
SPEAKER_05Let's see if yeah, see if you can hear why I might have thought that. Because I said, Why would I listen to Def Lebanon?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I don't I definitely It wasn't the music, it was Rob. Yeah, but his voice is pretty high up there when he starts singing. Right away.
SPEAKER_05Joe Elliott used to sing not that highly.
SPEAKER_06And the music music, you know, maybe that can remind me of death leopard. Okay, so that's that's uh I don't be a Deaf Leopard from that, but I mean I can see the way the music, the way the when Okay, well let's go back. When the music starts, the way the music starts to me. Well, not at the very start, but No, when he starts singing right here is where it I mean definitely reminds me of Def Leopard musically. No, I mean that that's more I say that's more well, I guess it isn't. No, you're not gonna say hysteria. Yeah. It could well, because hysteria had a lot of the uh effects. Yeah, yeah. So the effect like hysteria mixed with pyromania, maybe a little so.
SPEAKER_05Pyromania was the one I was thinking of when I I first thought it. But anyway.
SPEAKER_06Anyway.
SPEAKER_05So yeah, I had a listen to that, and uh there's some really good tracks on there, and there's some that just Oh gosh, yeah.
SPEAKER_06It's a it's a real hodgepodge, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I was like, I don't think I need to ever go back to listening to this or trying to listen to this.
SPEAKER_06You gotta put them on a list, like a one of those things, those things that Kirsty Lit does. The playlist.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. And yeah, for a couple of songs maybe. Because I remember when we talked about this years ago, it was like either that or turbo.
SPEAKER_06I'd say six out of I'd say six out of ten, I'd I'd like to hear. I I don't want to hear Love Zone. Although the last time I played this, I did pretty much enjoy everything other than Johnny be good. Like Love Zone, I was like, oh, it's better than I remember.
SPEAKER_05I thought I was gonna enjoy Johnny Be Good. I knew I didn't like it before, but I thought I'm in the kind because it made me think of like wasp.
SPEAKER_06Oh, here we go. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I was like, this is not this is not the rockabilly I'm looking for. Yeah. Um in Monsters of Rock, that was just kind of strange.
SPEAKER_06Monsters of Rock, I used to liken it to um uh they have a song on one of their late other albums, uh, and I thought, oh, this always reminds me of that. But when I listened to it on here, I thought, now, hold on, what's the song I'm thinking of? Um is it on Angel Retribution? Is it yeah, Lochness. Uh and I thought and then I thought, no, Lochness is a way better song.
SPEAKER_05I like I remember listening to that and liking that song. It's saved as my favorite somewhere.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, it's me, it's better than Lochness is better than Monster of Rock. I didn't like it as much when I listened to it this time.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I think it's been probably a few years since I listened to that, but I know I had it saved. Yeah, but it just I thought it starts out so well. Like Ram It Down is awesome.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, it is, it does.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and then after that, it's like, yeah. I used to think I liked hard as iron. Uh I listened to it, I was like, yeah, I don't like this at all.
SPEAKER_06The verses are awesome. But the chorus sucks.
SPEAKER_05Blood Red Skies.
SPEAKER_06And Blood Red Skies is awesome all around, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05That's the two standout tracks. That and um Ram It Down. Okay, so that was as far as I got. Uh because I thought, oh, maybe I'll go listen to some Judas Priest this week.
SPEAKER_06Because I used to think You started with Ram It Down and then you didn't get further. That's a surprise.
SPEAKER_05Is that a surprise? Yeah. Um because I've listened to Stan Class before and I know I liked it. And I remember thinking at one point, man, if I'd never listened to To Maiden First, I think I could have got right into Judas Priest. And I just didn't because I didn't have friends that were into it. I had one friend and that was about it. Yeah. That were into it. That is, I had two friends in real life. Um so yeah, I didn't want to go any further with that. So I just started falling back on the old favourites. If I told you something like keep the dogs away, what would you say?
SPEAKER_06I'm pretty sure I remember that this is something Kirsty mentioned last week. Maybe. Or maybe you mentioned it. It's aha. Is that aha?
SPEAKER_05No, no, no, no, no. This is actually older than aha by quite a bit.
SPEAKER_06Uh is it Thor?
SPEAKER_05It is Thor.
SPEAKER_06Oh no. I was trying to be funny and I actually tried.
SPEAKER_05That's what happened to me. I I tried to start out with Judas Priest, and I fell back into the warm arms of Thor.
SPEAKER_06Oh my god, that's that's that's a sad, sad, it's a sad day on Uncle Steve's Mega Maiden Zone.
SPEAKER_05Oh, well now that I say that, you might not be very um I might be letting you down with my choices of music now. I haven't listened to it. Not mine. I've I enjoyed it all.
SPEAKER_06That's all that matters. That's all that matters.
SPEAKER_05This is true. So I hadn't really listened to too much though. I had listened a few weeks back when I hadn't been on. I went through I still haven't been through the whole catalogue, there's too much of it. But it's just like 70s. Well, obviously it was made in the 70s, so of course it's 70s music. But I was just in a kind of laid-back mood after having listened to Judas Priest and being disappointed. I wasn't pining for anything particular, I was just kind of mellow. And so this kind of fit the mood. The only problem is it goes it goes in too many directions, this album. Hello, Doomy. Gay Dooms. Um, but by the time I got to the last track on this, I was uh it takes a big turn. It made me think it was like calypso music or Jamaican music or something. I was like, this is not what I came here looking for.
SPEAKER_06On the Thor album?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's strange. But that's one of the things that I've noticed with him. It doesn't always sound like the album that he's had out was always made at the same time. I'm trying to think there's another band that was like that. Who is that? And I said it sounds like this was all done at a different time.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I'm I'm I'm I can't place what you're talking about, but I know I'm I do vague, I do remember. Like there's half it's like half the album sounds like it's one thing and then another half is the something different.
SPEAKER_05I don't know what it is, but it reminded me of that. So then I've gotta find some warmth from somewhere else.
SPEAKER_08Oh boy.
SPEAKER_05Who so who do I go to? Uh-huh. I know. Actually, I'll I'll let you lose that. I didn't get it. Anvil. It was Anvil!
SPEAKER_02Oh gosh.
SPEAKER_05You're on fire tonight. Hello, Doomy. Um, so yeah, Anvil. Pound for pound. Now I know that you're uh you're a fan of the lighter side of Anvil. I realise that is you you don't mind a shuffle. Oh, you know, if the band if the band's gonna show you something, uh that you're all for that. Sure, yeah, sure. Yeah, you know it gives it it warms the cockles.
SPEAKER_06So they say, yeah.
SPEAKER_05And so I went back, I was like, man, when was the last time I listened to Pound for Pound? And it was a couple of years ago, it was actually July of 2024, I could name it down to the month. And I was like, man, this first track is really, really good, Call Blood on the Eyes. And then after that, I was like, hmm. This album is very clunky, it's very abrasive, and I was almost looking for the end of it. There are some juvenile tracks in here, so this could be right up your alley. You know when I say, Hey, I think you'll like this one?
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I wouldn't have said that about any of the tracks on here, I don't think. So, hey, you might like one of those.
SPEAKER_06Exactly.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, the song like By was it Senile King? I was kind of like, yeah, I'm starting to get a headache. This is just this is a bit too much for for me, this album. Yeah, and it's only the album's only 36 minutes long. Yeah, but I was like, God, there is just too much going on in here. There's just there's no flow, it's so abrasive, and it's not the mood that I'm that I'm in.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_05So then I'm I'm searching, I'm digging deep. What am I gonna listen to? I need something that's way out of left field. Yeah, you you're on fire so far. What could be like way out of left field even for me?
SPEAKER_06For you, God. I mean, you've already mentioned four. I mean, how how much further out can you get?
SPEAKER_05Uh so there's a band I used to love when I was in high school that are still around. But I don't care for them anywhere near as much anymore. Though I did find a newfound respect earlier this year as part of a collaboration with someone. That should be a bit of a hint. And I they collaborate with Thor. Oh, that'd be interesting, but no, they didn't. Okay.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I I'm I'm completely Metallica and Oh no. I did, I went there.
SPEAKER_05You went you listen to Lulu again. And I come away with the feeling I genuinely, genuinely like this. I think this album is special.
SPEAKER_06Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Now it's not it's not the hey, I just feel like listening to a bit of Lulu.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Because it's not like listening to a normal album. I've been liking it to it's an experience.
SPEAKER_06It's not an album where you pick out you know a couple of tracks and just go, I just want to hear this one song.
SPEAKER_05No, and actually I was very conscious of that too. I was listening to it, I was like, there's no single track here that I would just want to randomly listen to. Because I I don't think it would work. Because it is so different, you know. It's he's not okay. Some people might say he's just monotone singing over the top of it. But man, the band and James are awesome in this. And just the contrast of like Lou Reed's vocals over the top, I love this. But having said that, I can't just listen to it on a whim. I've got to be in a almost in like a X Factor kind of mood where I've got to be in the mood to listen to it.
SPEAKER_06This leads me to a question though. So when are you gonna step out and try some Lou Reed?
SPEAKER_05I did try it. Uh so I think it was either the first or second time I listened to this album.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I gave it a bit of time and then I went and searched some stuff out by him, and I was like, uh, I'm not really getting this.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_05But I don't know, maybe I'd go back. I just think that this collaboration just worked. It just there was something about it. There's just different layers to it, like James's vocals, the way he does it across the top in the background, just the music itself, like no one's overshadowing each other. I just thought it really complimented um both parties really well.
SPEAKER_06I I'm calling out to Doomy right now. I'll I want a quick trope from you next week with your thoughts on Matt's listening this week. Say get help, get help. Whack.
SPEAKER_05Is Doomy a fan of Kiss? I don't know if he is.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, he he's a big fan. Yeah, he's a big fan of KISS. Yeah, he is.
SPEAKER_05Is he uh is he the masked era or the unmasked era?
SPEAKER_06I'm pretty sure he's all around just start to finish. He loves KISS. So he just loves the the dynasty that is KISS. Yes, yes. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_05Well then he he may be somewhat um appreciative that I went back and listened to Unmasked multiple times.
SPEAKER_06Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_05Again this like I can't get enough of this album. Uh I know it's not as heavy. We discussed that as some of the earlier material, but the songs are all catchy.
SPEAKER_06And it's like, I don't know, it's not Yeah, it's very catchy stuff, yeah.
SPEAKER_05And I thought about it as like it's not challenging me. I can just enjoy like okay, Lulu's a bit of a challenge. I'll I'll grant you that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05But yeah, Kiss Unmasked is not. But no, I'm really enjoying it. And it maybe ought to go back and listen to more of that sort of era. So I went back to Dynasty or Dynasty.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And Because it's just easy to listen to. It's just a I like that phase of kiss.
SPEAKER_06I would say Unmasked is like it's it's a one-of-a-kind kiss album. It's it's like it's like going to the candy shop and just eating all the candy. It's like sugary sweet, you know? The melodies are just like sopping with sugar, you know.
SPEAKER_05They're just very borderline diabetic coma.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, pretty much. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, so I I mean, apart from the fact that um I was made for loving you on Dynasty or Dynasty as the opening track. I really wish it wasn't there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Because it it made me want to skip it, that first track. And I I like the solo in it. I just don't want to hear all the ooze.
SPEAKER_06But you wouldn't skip that one in your wildest dreams.
SPEAKER_05No, I I saved my skips for a later album.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Um, but I was thinking about it. So what do you think the biggest they talk about the disco element on that album? What is it do you think? And really, I think it comes down to that one song.
SPEAKER_06Yes, I definitely do. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05What is the biggest disco element within the track? If I was to ask you that, how would you answer? I was made for long you're saying about it.
SPEAKER_06It might be one particular that little singing part.
SPEAKER_05Not even that for me. It's like it's Gene. His bass lines.
SPEAKER_06You know, he didn't even play that. I don't know if he but yeah, bum bow-dom bound. Yeah, that I mean that the but it's the way the little it's the way the guitar sounds there too. You know, it's like danger-daugga-nga-nga-nga-nunga. It's not it doesn't have a crunch to it at all. It's just got this little wimpy like effect on it that doesn't really That's why if you hear the version on a live three on a live three sounds really cool. Because it's like a real distorted guitar.
SPEAKER_05So I wonder if Mr. Whitnall's perhaps that. Is he a Kiss fan? I don't know.
SPEAKER_06He's not a Pink Floyd fan, I know that.
SPEAKER_05He let you know that, didn't he?
SPEAKER_06There'll be more on that in a little bit.
SPEAKER_05Anyway, there's an album that I I love it to death. I don't know. I know, I'm picking it up.
SPEAKER_06Just go ahead and keep talking.
SPEAKER_05The AC.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. The Coop.
SPEAKER_05The Coops. Yo, Coops, Alice Cooper. Yeah, so I'd moved on like I was starting to get pretty comfortable again in my listening. So I had some kiss, like I'm falling back, but I'm in the mood for some more 70s. Yeah. Like oh, what do I want to listen to? Just something that's easy. And I didn't want any more kiss because I'm I don't know if I'm coming to an end on that. I've been very kiss involved for about the last four, five or six weeks. And Alice come to mind, but not any particular album. I was like, what will I listen to? Something early. And I was like, uh, either muscle of love, because I know that's one of your favorites. You don't mind falling back on that one from time to time, I hear. And I was like, yeah, love it to death. Because it has one of my favorite coop tracks.
SPEAKER_06Oh, here we go.
SPEAKER_05At the very end.
SPEAKER_06Oh god, Sunarise.
SPEAKER_05I love that track. Oh, it sounds so cool. I love the way it just circles around in layers at the end. Eee. So good, so good. Um, but then after that, I only really listened to two more albums. Like, I didn't listen to a lot of things during the week. Yeah. So this is a band that I've mentioned before probably a year or two ago. And it was one that I was either I was trying to think. How did I hear about this? It was either Peck or it was Melissa that mentioned this somehow.
SPEAKER_06I was gonna say Smolder or whatever.
SPEAKER_05No, no, no, no. I think Melissa mentioned Smolder, but it wasn't them.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah, okay, okay.
SPEAKER_05No, no. You remember Smolder? Uh couldn't I forgot that one?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_05Uh Primordial.
SPEAKER_06Um idea. Yeah. I I've heard of it, but I don't know who said it.
SPEAKER_05Oh, because I know I went through a little phase, I love the vocals. I thought they were really, really heavy.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_05And then when I went back and listened to it, I was like, hmm. It's not a heavy, heavy, but I like he just kind of bellows a lot of his deliveries out. I was like, oh, I really, really enjoy this. It kind of settled down again. I'm gonna mention your name, because it reminded me of Gen and Yorn Land, who was from Master Plan that I like.
SPEAKER_06Okay.
SPEAKER_05But he doesn't sound like Yawn's normal clean singing voice, but sometimes Yawn will drag out his uh his lines or his delivery of lines, and that's what Primordial reminds me of all the way through.
SPEAKER_06Okay.
SPEAKER_05And I liked it. I don't think it's something that you would like. Um sometimes it's it's trans like or just oh it's just kind of hypnotic in places, but it's just heavier.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And it was good. There's a track on there I really, really like. Nothing new under the sun. Um just just epic, epic sounding.
unknownCool.
SPEAKER_05And then after that, if I mentioned to you the burning, I know what might come to mind first. No, I don't need to see a doctor. But have you ever experienced the burning?
SPEAKER_06Uh, you're talking about uh Steve Harris's other band, right?
SPEAKER_05I am. Do you know the name of his other band?
SPEAKER_06British Lion.
SPEAKER_05Very good. I thought you may have forgotten it the way you had mentioned that.
SPEAKER_06I well, I I had to it was coming to me as you were text saying it. I was like, oh, what is this? I'd so I started talking and thankfully the right words came out.
SPEAKER_05Yes, otherwise you'll think you're a naughty boy. Um have you ever listened to this? Like in full?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah, I've got it. I I bought it, you know, whenever when it I think when it came out, because it they made kind of a deal about it, you know, like, oh, Steve Harris is playing this band, so you're like, Yeah, well, naturally, you're we're Iron Maiden fans, we have to buy it, you know. Well, we're a different kind of Iron Maiden fan.
SPEAKER_05A different breed.
SPEAKER_06The casual fan isn't gonna go out and buy that. But you know, if you're kind of a little too involved, like we are, you might go buy it. And we did.
SPEAKER_05I did, so and that'll be the falling down if you do that, because you're almost certain to not enjoy it. Like I remember my experience, I was like, oh man, I don't care for this at all. Steve Harris this, Steve Harris that.
SPEAKER_06Well, you hear Steve Harris's playing, and you go, okay, well, it's it's Steve Harris, but it's not Iron Maiden.
SPEAKER_05Exactly. And it's it's really unfair to make the comparison. Yes, there is that common link, that tie back to Maiden, and so it's so obvious that you can't get past that.
SPEAKER_06But Steve doesn't write all the music, right? No, they write the music, he just plays.
SPEAKER_05Correct. So it's very different. But I really like this album now. Because so my coming around on this, like I must have had some tracks saved as favourites, like, oh, I don't mind this. And then I would play things like on down a favourite track list or whatever. And it would just come on, it's like, oh, what is this? I like this.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And so, oh, British Lion. Oh, okay. And that's kind of how I came around to it. And I like the vocals because that used to be a problem that I would read that some people don't like the guy's voice and all. And it's very clean vocals, as you would probably expect.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, because they everyone turns it on and go, oh, this doesn't sound like Bruce.
SPEAKER_05Exactly, but it's not supposed to. Because there's certain people I think of when they're living rent-free in my brain sometimes when I listen to certain albums.
SPEAKER_02Uh-oh.
SPEAKER_05And I'm not going to mention any names. Um, some of them have been around for quite some time. Long, long time. Some people might say from a Jurassic era. And I think this person's not gonna like this. And he would or he or she or they would uh give their reasoning for it, and it's no good because it's post-2000, etc. etc. But I I think it's good. And yeah, it'd be the only reason that you know this band is because Steve Harris was in it. I said, Well, that's true. Because this is the conversation I'd have with myself. There's thousands of bands that I'll never ever hear of. So I'm sure that I would think a few of them would be great. Sure. If I only had some sort of exposure, but unfortunately I don't.
SPEAKER_06Right. Yeah, I mean, that's an I mean, and if you can get someone of of that ilk to play in your band, I mean, you're sure not gonna say, you know, no, we we we still want to keep Bob as our bass player. You know, he's been with us from the beginning and be like, look, Bob, uh, sorry, but uh this is gonna give us a chance to actually, you know, like get maybe really get a big break.
SPEAKER_05We might earn a dollar.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, so well, you're still gonna get your songwriting credits, don't worry.
SPEAKER_05But yeah, I do like this, and I I don't need to listen to it all the time, not by any stretch, but it's just uh it's an easy listen. I think there's some really good solo tracks in there. They're playing, and it's really good. Yeah, there's some good solos through there and all. But you know what? Someone would say you would never listen to this if Steve Harris wasn't in it. You'd be right. You never would have heard of it if Steve Harris wasn't in there. Exactly. So, you know, there's two sides of the coin.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, which which one are you you're gonna choose? I know you need time.
SPEAKER_05Choose one! Choose one! Yeah, this this week it was really more quality over quantity, I'd like to think.
SPEAKER_08Interesting.
SPEAKER_05Hello, Doomy!
SPEAKER_06Hello, Doomy. Okay, so um I listened to a lot of music this week, man. A lot of I I I I really had a month straight of like Pink Floyd and uh and rat or more, you know, and but I'll tell you everything I've listened to. And there's a couple of bands uh that I one I discovered on the internet uh watching random stuff, and they just and then another one someone recommended to me that I and both were bands I've never now maybe there's a slight possibility that one of these bands has been mentioned by it could be you, could be Kirsty, could be uh Outback, could be Villa.
SPEAKER_05So when I name the band Villa's the real wild card in that lot.
SPEAKER_06Well, Villa's got a lot of interesting musical taste.
SPEAKER_05That's what I mean.
SPEAKER_06So um and and well, the reason you or Kirsty might be mentioned is because Australia. The reason Outback might be mentioned is because of his style of music that he listens to. He's pretty broad, but and then same with Villa style. So um, but let me start off with uh well, let's see here. Where do I start? Oh gosh, that's a lot. How about Pink Floyd? Uh I I wasn't I didn't listen to a lot of Pink Floyd this week, but I did listen to the final cut because I just kind of feel like I want to keep throwing it in there every now and then. Like I it's kind of a good cleanser, you know, as far as it's something completely different if you listen into heavy stuff.
SPEAKER_05Um then I listened to Bella cleanser or is it a Whitney bow cleanser?
SPEAKER_06No, it's just well I got an out Don't worry, Andrew's gonna get mentioned very shortly here.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_06Uh then I listened to an album that I know you like called Wish You Were Here. Okay. You played that, you liked it. Um then I listened to The Wall, and those are the only three I listened to. But a while back I mentioned some stuff about Andrew Whitnall and maybe why he didn't like Pink Floyd, and it all had to do with the politics of one um Roger Waters, to which I got no response, which tells me maybe I struck a nerve.
SPEAKER_05Response in itself, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, no response is a response in a way, until I and I'm not trying to to um bait him into a war of words on this. I'm just saying, like, is that something he's considered? Is that maybe because Andrew's a very political person.
SPEAKER_05I was just wondering, do you think he was thinking, oh, I wish. Yeah, I wish you were here so he could talk to you in person about it.
SPEAKER_06Uh yeah, I'd love to talk to him in person about it. I mean, two years ago, we were talking in person.
SPEAKER_05Two years to old souls in a fishbowl.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Year after year. Two years ago today, though, I have to mention this as well, because my daughter told me this earlier. Two years ago from our recording right now, uh, I discovered Kill Switch Engage. I was front row on the barrier at the Iron Maiden concert with Kirsty, with uh Melissa, with Discovered, you say.
SPEAKER_05That's an interesting word to use.
SPEAKER_06Well, discovered discovered that I could listen to them.
SPEAKER_05How about even though you'd heard of Kill Switch Engage many a time.
SPEAKER_06I couldn't escape it. And I just had to go listen, and then I you're I'm up front and I'm hearing the riffs, and I'm like, God, these riffs are really good.
SPEAKER_05Even though you'd been exposed to it for at least a couple of years.
SPEAKER_06I had seen them a night before as well, without back.
SPEAKER_05But even before all that, surely people had discussed it with you.
SPEAKER_06You had discussed them, but you know how your opinions and music go with me.
SPEAKER_05Hey, I listened to Judas Priest this week.
SPEAKER_06Well, that's good. Anyway, but I'm wondering if if Andrew has ever thought that maybe it's Roger Waters' political opinions and outspokenness of them that just makes him not be able to even consider like maybe he can't separate the art from the artist.
SPEAKER_05I was just thinking that. Is that in those cases?
SPEAKER_06Or maybe their music just bores them. You know, it could be that, like the way that's what Bill says. So but that's all I listened to from Pink Floyd this week. Those three albums. Wish You Were Here is fantastic, fantastic album as well.
SPEAKER_05I I like your tie-in, the way that we were all tied in and being from Australia, but it came back to Pink Floyd. That was interesting. No, no, no, no. What you did there.
SPEAKER_06No, no, that I haven't got to that band yet.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay, that's good.
SPEAKER_06No, no, it's I couldn't I couldn't join those dots. I'm going to save that band for last because I just listened to it uh today. Uh I listened to Judas Priest again this week. Uh I kind of went through the uh I started with Staying Class and I thought, let me go to the albums before it, Sin After Sin. And I thought, man, Sin After Sin is just another really, really solid album. Like I used I used to struggle with the 70s Priest. And then Sad Wings of Destiny. Another like those three albums right there, man, solid. Like the the going after uh, you know, going into Hellbent for Leather, um British Steel, and Point of Entry, what man, there's some great songs on this album, but in comparison to the three before them, golly, it was like three turds, you know.
SPEAKER_05Um what was the album where they changed their sound? So I think listen.
SPEAKER_06I think it was Hell Bent for Leather. It was? There was still some heavy stuff on Hell Bent for Leather, but it was when the songs started getting a lot shorter.
SPEAKER_05Well, they lost that um like psychedelic thing they had going on.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah. I mean, if you go, if you go and say that it was when they lost the psychedelic part of it, you'd go back to, like, let's see here. You got Sad Wings of Destiny, which you got, Victim of Changes, The Ripper, uh, Dreamer, Deceiver, Tyrant, Genocide, um, Island of Domination, I'm not a big fan of. But uh, then you go to Sin After Sin, which Center, like listen to this. I was thinking about this as I was listening to this. This album, this opens their 1977 album. So Kiss was putting out like I Stole Your Love, right? That's how they opened their 70, their second. They opened it with I Want You on Rock and Roll Over. And then, but this is how the Priest opens their 1977 album, and I was going like, holy crap, like, just listen to this. I'll go up to the chords. I was just like holy crap, man. What a that's heavy. Nineteen seventy-seven, you know?
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_06But you got there's a Starbreaker. Last Rose of Summer, I I struggle a little bit with uh Raw Deal. I I used to not like Raw Deal, but man, I listened to it this week and I thought, God, that song's awesome. You got uh the song Slayer covered, dissonant aggressor, you know.
SPEAKER_05What was the reason for their change in style? Because that's a pretty pretty dramatic change from I mean, I don't know. I've listened to the early albums once.
SPEAKER_06I'm sure they were just going for a, you know, trying to, you know, shorter songs, get to the radio, get get a bigger, you know, fan base is what they I'm sure they were going for.
SPEAKER_05It wasn't driven by a lineup change or anything like that.
SPEAKER_06I mean, okay, you had um I'm trying to remember right now, because one of these albums had Simon Phillips playing drums on it, and then like two or three of them had less Binks. I think he played on the three later ones. I think uh what it was is I might mess this up, piss somebody off that's a big priest fan, but uh because cause uh Dave Holland joined on British Steel, I believe. And then I think the three albums before that, which would have been I think Hellbent Same Class and Sin After Sin would have been Shoot, maybe Sin After Sin is what the one that has uh let me see, says it on here. I can't remember, but I know one of the guys uh plays on one album and then uh Les Binks plays on three of them. Les Binx is double bass and he's awesome. So but um No, Les Binks might have even played on um shoot, uh maybe played on British Seal. I can't remember. I can't remember now. Uh well maybe maybe the uh Hopeless Romantic will fill in and uh the the blanks for us on a quiet foot or something.
SPEAKER_05Was Rob on the first album?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, Rob was on every album. He was other than the two that where he left. Uh but he yeah, they had an they had a different singer in the beginning. Yeah, and and that guy did co-write some of the songs that ended up on some of these albums, but um, or at least at least one, if I'm a hundred percent sure of. But um, yeah, Rob sang on it, but by the time that he was gone, you know, and then Rob came in, and that's whenever they really were like, okay, we got something here, you know.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_06So okay, so I listened to Stained Class, Sin After Sin, Sad Wings of Destiny, and I was just like, holy crap, what three awesome albums. Um, then I went to Screaming for Vengeance, which uh I that to me, that's that's not that's not their best album, but to me it's their second best. Well, I'll be honest, man, stained class is is hitting hard for me right now. I I'm thinking Stain Class and Um Sad Wings of Destiny are both just fantastic albums, too. So they're really up there in the list for me now. But Screaming for Vengeance, Defenders of the Faith, um, I listened to Turbo, and I enjoyed most of I'll I'll tell you what, one thing about Turbo I thought was funny is the song that I call the the absolute worst song on the album. Um, listen to how the riff opens with it. I think it's gonna, if I'm not mistaken, I think this is a really cool riff. Listen to this. Nope, sorry, wrong song. Rock You All Around the World, I think, was like really cool's beginning. Like, that sounds really cool, right? Yeah. And then when it kicks in to the main riff, you're like, oh no.
SPEAKER_05Until that part it reminded me of Lizzie Borden for a little bit. But I couldn't mind that.
SPEAKER_06But yeah, I was listening and I was thinking, man, Rocky Roll around the world's got a really cool riff at the start, you know, and it's just but of course, you know, reckless and hot for love and out in the cold, and even parental guidance and private property at this stage of my life. I I I can enjoy those songs.
SPEAKER_05Locked in.
SPEAKER_06Locked in is awesome, and turbo lover is awesome.
SPEAKER_05That was the song I was waking up during the week with Turbo.
SPEAKER_06I remember that, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Last thing I wanted.
SPEAKER_06I remember you were waking up here and locked in. You they had you locked in. It was bad. But yeah, Turbo, then I did ramp I I just went in order. I was like, once I got to Screaming for Vengeance, I was because I skipped those three albums that they all have good songs. Point of Entry has a couple, two or three good songs, and you know, um British Seal has quite a few good songs, but there's some major, major just drops in quality from one song to the other every now and then on those albums. Same class, Sin After Sin and Sad Wings don't really have much of that. Screaming for Vengeance and Defenders of Faith really don't have that at all, other than the way Defenders kind of ends on a weaker note. Turbo obviously has a couple of weak spots, and it's and it is a weaker album overall just because the lyrical quality is not as good. Um it's you know, they changed a lot, and but I enjoy, I can listen to that album and I do enjoy it. Ram It Down, um you mentioned like I like Ram It Down. I love the song heavy metal. Uh Love Zone, I was kind of enjoying this week. I could kind of go like, okay, it's all right, which is a first for me. I've always hated it. Uh Come and Get It, I think it's really cool. Like the opening riff for Come and Get It. That's awesome. I mean, hard as iron. I mean, I know you said you don't like it, but the way this song opens, God, it's incredible. The core is a word. Okay, I I like it. I like to do the body. The core is just stuck terrible. Stuck's like nothing else has ever stuck before. God. Hey Butthead, change it or kill me. Of course, you got Blood Red Skies, which is awesome. I'm a Rocker. I think I'm a Rocker's a cool song. Johnny Be Good. God almighty. Love You to Death. I I was actually kind of enjoying Love You to Death, which I've always hated. Maybe I was just in a real priest mood. I think that's what it was.
SPEAKER_05That's what I was going to ask. Are you making allowances because you're so heavily involved in the money?
SPEAKER_06I was, I I did I definitely made some allowances on this album. I think that's because I was going, oh my god, I've never liked Love Zone. But I was kind of like, you know, I was just enjoying it like a not like not paying too much attention, just kind of like singing. I caught myself singing along at times to some of the songs that I just ugh. Not Johnny Be Good, though. I think I I think I'm I I might have skipped it. I might have skipped Johnny Be Good on purpose. No, I think I played it. But then I played, you know, and Monster Rock's kinda cool, but it's not as good as um Lochness either. So of course, and then I mean then I played the greatest heavy metal album ever recorded in the history of man. Painkiller. So God, what an incredible, incredible album. So okay, so let's get some other bands here.
SPEAKER_05Do you think I would like that? Painkiller? I I like the song Painkiller. I like it a lot. I think it's an awesome song.
SPEAKER_06Every every song on that album. Kirsty just listened to it last week, right?
SPEAKER_05That's what made me wonder.
SPEAKER_06And she said every song was great. There's not a part from the bonus track, yeah. Except apart from the bonus, yeah. I mean, it's like you listen to it and you're like, I mean, it's just it's it's all heavy, it's all really, really, really well done. Oh, it's just I love it, man. I mean, to me, if if if I had if I absolutely had to pick a weak track on that album, of the first of the of the of the songs, not the the one at the end, I would say I would think the weak the weakest track is the closing track, and it's a good song. So So knowing what I like, and if I gave a serious- I mean, I I can't I can't ever say knowing what you like, I think you'd like this, because I you've ruined it too many times for me. I've just too many things I've told you are great that you're just like, no, I don't like it.
SPEAKER_05Stone Temple Pilots and Black Label also. I don't want to hear those things though. But this, I'm I'm open to Judas Priest, because I don't mind a few of the songs.
SPEAKER_06I mean, you like Judas Priest in general to a degree. Play the god dang painkiller album. You're gonna love it. I'll put it that way. That's all I'm about to do. It's uh it's what I consider to be the greatest metal album ever recorded. If you ask me what my favorite album in the history of the world is, I can't choose anything but painkiller. I just it's too it's a perfect album, Matt. It's perfect. There's not a turd on the album. It's it's like like Gen said it last week. It's the it's probably, which I don't agree because the Screaming for Vengeance, I think, doesn't have any bad songs. Although it has one that I would consider a weakest song pretty easily.
SPEAKER_05But would there be anything where I'm gonna be lit down where if I'm listening to it and I hear cheesy vocals?
SPEAKER_06I don't think so. I don't no, no, they abandoned it with this album because they made Turbo. Yep, then they were trying to come back heavier. I mean, look how Ramit listen how Ramit down started. Listen to how Ramit Down started. I mean, you can't go wrong starting any album in the history of mankind like this. I just love that scream. I I had a friend that turned me on to this album years ago, and he was just like, dude, just listen to how it starts. And it's just like, holy crap. I mean, that's incredible. That's an incredible opening.
SPEAKER_05Alright, so I'm not gonna hear any cheesy lyrics or any corny cores.
SPEAKER_06I don't think so, man. I do not think so. I think it's a it's a superb, superb. I rank that over every Iron Maiden album ever recorded. And I know people don't agree with me when I say it, because people think, you know, Power Slave or Peace of Mind or Number of the Beast or A Matter of Life and Death or whatever. Those are all great albums, don't get me wrong. But you know, if I'm I mean, this is a perfect album. I mean, as much as I love A Matter of Life and Death, I can find little, little small kinks in it. Very small. There's no kinks in this album.
SPEAKER_04A kinks. Okay.
SPEAKER_06The only kink would be that there's a uh um a little one-minute musical instrumental ahead of the closing track. And it's it just leads you into the track. It's and it's not bad, it's just it's just yeah, it's it's nothing that that like you don't hear it go, oh, this sucks. It just it fits. It's and it's just like and then the la and then the riff comes in and you're like into the song, and it's it's a it's a bit different than I think everything else on the album, but man, it it still works.
SPEAKER_05Give me give me a song to lead in with then. What's gonna drag me into I'm gonna go and listen to the rest of the album? And it can be painkiller.
SPEAKER_06I'm gonna go to the chorus on this and you just tell me what you think afterwards. If you don't like this, it's pretty busy. Oh no, what I do.
SPEAKER_03Ah, what's this?
SPEAKER_06That's track number two, man. If that doesn't draw you in, maybe track number three will. And then listen to the leaves that it comes in. And listen to how he goes back in with the vocal, Matt. Ah, Matt.
SPEAKER_05So I mentioned Heaven's Gate. It was a band that I heard of in the 90s. And because I didn't listen to Judas Priest, but I used to hear how we were influenced by Judas Priest. You know, every band was saying that. So I had listened to this for years and years and never really listened to Judas Priest at all. And then I went back and listened to, I don't know what album it was, the priest album. I was like, oh man, I can hear Heaven's Gate in this, like his vocal style and everything. There's whenever I said I like that melody. There's a song of one of the albums there. I can't think of the song. It's just like it. I was like, oh, I like this vocal melody because it sounded familiar.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_05And it just makes me think just how influential they must have really been. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_06I'm not gonna play any more, but man, that's that was the opening to three tracks on the album.
SPEAKER_05Well, you Yeah, I'll I'll I'll try and give that a fish during the week.
SPEAKER_06I mean, all I can say is if you come back and say, yeah, I like Lulu and I don't like Painkiller.
SPEAKER_05I had to fall back on Thor.
SPEAKER_06I may have to be called I may have to be called Doomie to replace you permanently. Okay, so okay, uh, that's all I listed by Priest, though. I mean, uh just this is top-notch. I mean, Sang Class, Sin after Sins, Sad Wings of Destiny, Screaming for Vengeance, Painkiller, Defenders of the Faith, you know, and Turbo and Ram It Down, I like lots of pieces of, but you know, those are a little flawed, I will admit. Um, okay, this will interest a few random people. And speaking of Doomy McDoom Butt, um, I listened to an album, and I can't remember the last time I played this album. An album by Kings X. Yeah, and I and the album I listened to was called Ear Candy. And the reason I was um wanted to listen to Ear Candy is because of the closing track on the album, it's called Life Going By. And and there was something where I think I must have been thinking about my kids or something, and I just thought about oh, my life going by. And then that song just popped into my head. I thought, man, life's just going by, man. And that lyric hit me, and I s I tell you what, I bawled when I listened to that song though the other day. Like it just as soon as I heard that chorus and the lyrics of the song, you know, and I just like it just made me cry. Just I don't know why. Because, you know what, like it just randomly hit me during the week, and I played it like three days later. And I mean, I just cried when I played that song. I was there was uh quite a few songs on the album that I really loved, and then some of the ones that I used to love I didn't like as much. And um, but I I saw them on that tour. Uh, you know, I met the band on that tour a couple times, and uh I loved that album back in the day. But life going by, man, that's a really, really good closing track. Um I can't say that you would like it, because I don't because I don't know. But um, but man, I just yeah, I enjoyed uh hearing it, and it didn't make me want to I thought for a minute when I was listening to the album, man, I'm gonna go on a kick with them now, and but it didn't make me want to go on a kick, so. Um But yeah, Ear Candy by King Z. Um so there was a band I I discovered, and I don't know that I'll be listening to them anymore, but I was on Instagram, and you know, on I well, you wouldn't know this because um on Instagram they'll have these little reels, you know, and I know you know what kind of reels are, but and there was a reel of a band, and I I hit it and I start playing it, and it's a band from California, and I don't know how long they've been around, but it reminded me a bit of like um that uh what's the band? Uh oh, um, the band we saw opening for Kill Switch, Matt, that you weren't very impressed by. Um like uh hold on, I'll find their name in my phone. The Kublicon? The Kublicon, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_06They had a real heavy style and just the leap the vocal style was somewhat similar. It reminded me of like a little bit of Kill Switch too.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_06And um, so this band was called Drain, D-R-A-I-N. And the album was called Is Your Friend. So I'll play a little bit of it. I mean, I I enjoyed the lo I'm telling you, watching the live video that whatever it was I ran across on uh Instagram, like I was really impressed. I was like, a ton of energy. A ton of energy. Um and uh I listened to the album one time and I didn't get the same it's probably energy in the songs, but but I didn't get the like I thought they sounded better live, maybe.
SPEAKER_05But here's what was the album called?
SPEAKER_06Um The band is called Drain, and then the album is called Dot Dot Dot Is Your Friend.
SPEAKER_05The album only goes for 27 minutes, and it's got ten songs.
SPEAKER_06Well, it's it's kind of like Kubla Khan. Their songs are short, and but here's what they sound like. I'll play a little bit. This is just what and I don't remember it much at all. So this is the opening track. This is what it sounds like. We'll see. I don't remember this at all. Okay, I thought I want to play that. Okay, come on now.
SPEAKER_03Is it gonna be tourist?
SPEAKER_05I assume this is the kind of reminds this reminds me of Pantera this time.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, a little bit, yeah. So, but I did play their album because the live clip I saw, like that dude had so much like I'm telling you, he looked like a surfer kid from California. He was wearing like pink shorts, and like like he just did not look like he fit into that crowd. But man, he's you know, he talked kind of that that way on stage. I want everybody to get, you know, and just I want to see this pit moving and all. Like it reminded me of the way Kublakan acted on stage. Yeah, and there was so much energy, I was really impressed by it. And I was like, man, this sounds cool. Oh, I I was about to say I was about to give away a story that I'm gonna tell momentarily, so I don't want to say it. Um okay, so I listened to that. Um Kirsty Prince, our friend, yeah, that we were with uh in Australia at an Iron Maiden show two years ago, will be very uh happy to know that I listened to some completely contradictory to this band. I listened to some Oasis this week.
SPEAKER_05Oh, that's a bit of a change.
SPEAKER_06I keep sending her clips of Oasis on Instagram, and she's like, you keep sending me clips about Oasis, but I never hear you listening to them. So So this week I made a conscious effort. I was like, you know what? I I I said Instagram is like you send two or three clips to somebody, and then your feed is just flooded with whatever you send. So I keep getting all these Oasis clips. And and I saw them in concert back in like 97. Uh well, I had a friend that had an extra ticket, and I think he must have tried to sell it, give it to every possible person he could. Yeah. Before he finally just called me and goes, Hey, I got an extra ticket to see Oasis. Would you want to go? I go, Yeah, when is it? He goes, like three hours.
SPEAKER_05How big were they at that time when you saw him?
SPEAKER_06Well, 97, they I mean, it was on their third album, so they had already done like Wonder Wall and so they had been huge. But we saw him in a kind of a small place, like maybe a 3,000 seater kind of place. So not not what you you know, they in 96 a year before that in England, they played that place called Nebworth that Mike Maiden did their thing at. I was reading because I've been reading a little bit about him. They played two shows in two days to 250,000 people. They said back then one in every three homes would have had an Oasis album in it. Very well. But I listened to their first three albums. Definitely, maybe was the story, Morning Glory, and Be Here Now.
SPEAKER_05What'd you think? In their entirety, do you think they're strong the way through?
SPEAKER_06I think there's a lot of good deep cuts. Yes.
SPEAKER_05See, I tried listening to an album. I I like some of the singles, but I couldn't do the whole album. I don't remember why.
SPEAKER_06Let me get to oh. So, okay, uh their their first album, um I think Rock and Roll Star is a big hit. Live Forever, everyone kinda knows. Um, what's the one I was like? I think Slide Away was a big song too. But like I'll play a little bit of it and see because I I think I really liked this one when I was playing it. Can you hear that? Can you hear the music?
SPEAKER_03Can now, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Okay. Simon is wild, Uncle. Come on.
SPEAKER_05Can you hear anything?
SPEAKER_06But I like they're they're still they kind of always have a minor T vibe going on, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_03I like his voice.
SPEAKER_06It's cool.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's really it's not like a huge voice. Great range, it's just not sounding.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. It's got a it's got a cool exact company. But I like, yeah, they got cool melodies and just everything sounds I think everything's minor key. Because they're not writing like happy songs, I think. Not very they don't have a couple, but I'm pretty sure there's one on their third album. That's cool. That's great melodies. Okay, I'm gonna pause it because uh so the next album. Like the next alb you ever heard you probably haven't have you listened to their albums ever?
SPEAKER_05I tried listening to one and I couldn't get through it. I was like, yeah, there's not enough here for me. And I was kinda disappointed. I wanted to like it, but I just couldn't.
SPEAKER_06Well, you just like this voice, so maybe there's a hope.
SPEAKER_05I mean, I could go back. It could have just been where I was at that time if I went back and got here in a different way.
SPEAKER_06Like, here's the way their second album opens. Like, it's really cool, I think. It's called Hello. It takes a second to start, and then they make it sound like it's gonna be this acoustic album. And then they kick in.
SPEAKER_05Is that this hey baby baby isn't?
SPEAKER_06You were thinking one door.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_06But see, they then they come over it with electric roof. The chorus on this song's pretty cool.
SPEAKER_05Take his voice away, it makes him take a bar band music. Like bah sort of bands.
SPEAKER_06Oh, yeah. That's like when he goes, hello. One thing I thought was funny was I was reading and it said that there was this big competition almost between them and Blur to like be the bigger band at the time.
SPEAKER_05Big British indie bands.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, Brit Pop, they called it. And I'm like, Blur doesn't even compare to these guys.
SPEAKER_05I mean Is that then it was like, woo-hoo!
SPEAKER_06Yeah, that was their big hit. But like there's a song here called uh like listen to this. This this one sounds pretty cool, I think, if this is the right one. Some really good melodies all over this album, though. And and mixed with his voice, you know, that's yeah, it does have a barbing. So here's the next song. This is the last one I'll play off of here. It's uh it's called Cast No Shadow. It's real, it's got this real dreamy vibe, and when he starts singing, oh, it's it's so good. This might be the actual riff that was playing at the start. Just listen to how this kicks in, not so dreamy, but. You know, in their band, there's a lot of history between those brothers and fighting and you know just having real major problems with one another, and it's interesting. I won't play anything else because I still got more time. I still got some talking to do here. Uh I got two more bands to talk about. Um I hope you're happy now, Kirsty. I did listen to some Oasis and and I was really, really enjoying it. Um Okay, let's see. I mentioned this band and this band and this band and this band and this band. So I'm gonna leave one band for the end. Um uh but also the first the next band I'm gonna talk about is the band that I think that somebody might have mentioned before that I just that someone told me about like a day or two ago, like yesterday, someone mentioned this band. And I'll be honest, at first I just kinda like he wanted me to look him up, and so I was just kinda I didn't really want to look him up based on what he was telling me, and I was like, okay. I'll type it in, and I go, oh yeah, there it is. I'll add it. It was somebody named Jimmy, but it was a different Jimmy. A guess. Huh? It was a good guess then. It was a really good guess, actually. And so I went ahead and I I pulled it up and go, oh yeah, here's their I'll and I just go, oh, I added it. And then I just kind of changed the subject because I thought, okay, now he'll maybe he'll quit talking about it. So this is a band from um Tasmania, which is in Australia, right?
SPEAKER_05It is. It's the little island off of the East Coast. Okay.
SPEAKER_06Okay. Um now this is a a band that um gosh, I don't even know. I'm gonna play it first, and maybe before I even say the name of the band, someone will be going, Holy crap, I can't believe Oh gosh. I almost said my last name instead of my first name. Can't believe Steve played that. Okay, so and you'll probably think the same thing too, whenever you hear that that I listen to this. Okay, so here is the opening track from this band's most recent album that came out, uh Is there a date? Looks like it came oh gosh. Um It came out it looks like this came out in July of this year. This band's newest album, and supposedly, Matt.
SPEAKER_03Do they have a name?
SPEAKER_06You're gonna find out. They uh supposedly they've been around since for like 25 years, so they would have been around when you were still in Australia.
SPEAKER_05That's why I was wondering if they had a name.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, they do. So I'll play a little bit of it and just see if you recognize their sound. I'd rather you tell me the name. Okay, see what you think of this.
SPEAKER_05Say the name.
SPEAKER_06It's like you're trying to get me say uh Jeff. Their name is Jeff. Right now their name is Jeff, okay? Let's just call them Jeff for right now. No, I know I haven't heard of this one. Okay. So see what I I know what you're gonna think of this.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_06Earlier I couldn't, you know, you were like, would I what would I think of this or that? And I was like, I don't know. But this, I think you're gonna love this.
SPEAKER_07Okay.
SPEAKER_06This is the opening track from their most recent one. I figure Villa's already going, oh, that's it. It reminds me of the drumming of lots of the plastic. Like giving space lots of double data. And and they're doing that thing. Well, they play the colour. That's cool.
SPEAKER_05See, this plant reminds me a little bit of kills.
SPEAKER_06It does. Okay, well, I'll go ahead and atmosphere to it. Yeah. Well, I I played this full album today, and and y music like this is really not in my wheelhouse. And the only reason I played it, because I thought I want to be able to talk about it on the podcast. That's the only reason I played it. Was like I can say I listened to a band from Perth, but then I read that they were from Tasmania, so. But this band and and is called Psychropticed. Psychroptic. PSY? PSY. Psychroptic. Ever heard of him?
SPEAKER_04I don't believe so.
SPEAKER_06I figure Owlback will know, because he he he seems like he would be the kind of guy that would like that. But I played the whole album and it's real heavy, but I found myself kind of going like I could kind of feel the vibe, and the bass drums just sounded good, and I was like, there's something about this that I can kind of dig. They have two singers apparently. This is maybe this is their first album where they've had added a second cleaner vocal, but I didn't hear any clean vocals on the whole album.
SPEAKER_05So I'm just saying this is their latest album.
SPEAKER_06This came out in July, it says.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_06It's called The Pulse of Annihilation. Just if you want to check it out.
SPEAKER_05I was looking at 38 minutes for the album.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, it's 10 songs or nine songs, 38 minutes, 39 minutes, whatever. And yeah, it's on Metal Blade. Uh, they've got they've been around for 25 years, I think I read, and uh and it was interesting. Like I thought to myself, I will say, by the end of the album, I was kind of getting like a little like, okay, this is a little much, you know. But like I think the first half of the album, I was just kind of like, man, this is there's some cool melodies here, and just interest. It was interesting for sure.
SPEAKER_05So is it any clean vocals or is it all?
SPEAKER_06I'm I might try it again, but I don't remember any clean vocals. But they it names like there's a in the description it says um uh where does it say here? Um it helps that Jason Kaiser from the American band Origin has joined as a second vocalist, starting with 2022's Divine Council, to add a sharp counterpoint to the other guy's more guttural approach. So I maybe he just does a vocal that's still dirty or whatever, but it's not as guttural. Yeah. Okay, so. But I did want to mention that, and I thought, you know, it'd be interesting to see if anyone out there knows who they are, because um anyway, okay. So I listened to one other band this week, Matt. And and and this is not one that you're gonna be happy to hear of me listening to.
SPEAKER_05Do they have a cool title of an album at least?
SPEAKER_06Yes, absolutely, dude. Sounds very dark. Um yeah. Yeah, uh yeah, uh uh. Like like order, like an order. I won't read them in order, but uh because you'd be out of order if you did that. I would be, yeah. So I listened to some black label society. Cool. Engines of Demolition, Doom Crew Incorporated, Grimmist Hits, Catacombs of the Black Vatican, and I got halfway through Order of the Black, and I didn't quite get to finish it. So But you're probably wondering, like, Steve, why'd you listen to all that?
SPEAKER_05No, I really wasn't.
SPEAKER_06Well, on Saturday night, me and Vanessa went and saw them in concert.
SPEAKER_05You have okay, now I'm interested. Most interested I've ever ever been for black label.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Not from your thoughts. What were her thoughts?
SPEAKER_06Uh she uh she enjoyed she likes Zach Wilde. Like she's a fan of well, she's a fan of Zach's like acoustic stuff, you know. Okay, yeah. And so with my oldest friend, whose name is Michael, um, him and his daughter were going to this show. And I talked to him on like Thursday or something. I said, You're going to the Black Label show, right? Because I've dude, I mean, I as much as I've listened to him, I desperately wanted to see him, you know. And I was like, I know they're in town, and plus Zack Wilde's cover band, Zack Sabbath, is opening, you know. So it was double.
SPEAKER_05What sort of venue are they playing?
SPEAKER_06Uh, the same one we saw Halloween in.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_06And you're probably wondering, I'm gonna send you a picture.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Let me find the picture that I took. Is this that one? Yeah, I'm gonna send you this picture here uh real quickly, uh, if well, if I can find your name. There you are. Matthew. I won't read the rest. But I want you to look at the at the amount of people on the floor at this show. It's the same venue we saw Halloween in. And this is during the very first band. Yeah, there were more people on the floor when this band started than there was at the entire Halloween show.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_06So it's it was packed. It was packed out. I was like, which I was happy, because I'm like, you know, you want bands to keep touring. And Dark Chapel is a band that uh the guy that told me about Cycroptic, when I told him I saw Dark Chapel, he said they were bit, he said they were huge. And I was like, oh, I've never even heard of them. But uh the guitar players slash singer for Dark Chapel also is the guitar player for Black Label Society. He's one of them. Obviously, you got Zach too as well. So But um they were okay. I really I I hate to say I didn't really dig them too much. The music was cool, but I wasn't into the vocals a lot. To which Vanessa, my wife, was like she acted like she kind of liked his vocals. I was like, really? Okay.
SPEAKER_05For the Doc Chapel band.
SPEAKER_06A little bit, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Well is it like clean singing?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, it's it's kind of gruff. It's a little, it's not it's not gruff, like it's not like what we just heard anything. It's a little rough, you know, but it's not, but it's it's kind of a rough clean. It's you know, it's not he's not trying to sing gruff, I'll put it that way. He's just got a gruffer voice.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Uh but then the second band came on with Zack Sabbath, which is you know, Zach Wilde and a bass player and a drummer trio, and they do Black Sabbath songs, which was just really cool. Now, something happened at this show that it my experience seeing Black Label Society was different than any other band I've ever seen, Matt.
SPEAKER_05So you've never seen them before?
SPEAKER_06I've never seen Black Label. I have seen Zack Sabbath, but never Black Label.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_06So there's a it you've been up in the balcony before. No, no, you haven't. You've seen it though. So when you go up in the balcony, there's a there's a ramp for like wheelchairs to get up in there at a certain spot. And when we got there, we were standing on that ramp at at a certain spot, and the security was like, Yeah, y'all can stand there, that's fine. So we were there for the first two bands.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_06By the time black label's getting ready to come on, I mean, it's as packed as it's gonna get in the place, right? Which is when the security guard says, Hey, you guys are gonna have to move. I got too many wheelchairs coming through. And I and then we're like, the floor is just as packed as it looks in that picture I showed you, it was worse when black label came on.
SPEAKER_05I mean, it was you've missed your chance for a good spot. But I can't see Vanessa being down there.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, and I wasn't uh because my friend was upstairs and he had gotten like a kind of a primo side seat next to the stage kind of thing. And yeah, because and he's my friend is a veteran, and you know, he's had some traumatic uh experiences overseas, and he kind of he doesn't like being in the midst of a like real big crowd, so he wanted to but he was like, Yeah, when y'all get here, come upstairs and maybe we can get you over here where we're at, but we couldn't because security was too tight for where he was at. But we but we found we could stay up there and we got in that spot because he was like, You should try to get right here, man. That'd be a great spot. And it was a great spot. So until you know, before a black label came out, and then we got so then we just kind of walked back and I was like, I saw my friend, I was like, dude, we got we just got kicked out, we're not. He goes, What do you mean? I go, Well, we can't stand there anymore, too many wheelchairs or whatever. So which is fine. I I I I totally understand, you know, that's what that area is for. You know, so we just kind of go back and stand next to a wall. I can't see anything on the stage, other than I can if I stand on my tippy toes, I can see the big barrier that's up that the the big uh curtain they have up or whatever.
SPEAKER_05But I can't So VC Zero.
SPEAKER_06So in that case. Well, I'll tell I will say this. During Black Label, she had to leave because she said the the the flashing lights were starting to give her a headache.
SPEAKER_05Yep.
SPEAKER_06So when Black Label came on, I just kind of thought to myself, and I thought, okay, there's a couple of ways I can handle this. Uh, because there's nowhere for me to go. So I just I just decided, you know what, I'm gonna stand back here against this wall. Every now and then I could sneak over to the right just a little bit, and there's a downward staircase, and I can look through there and see the stage a little bit, but I'm like, I can hear everything perfectly fine. So I just stood up against that wall and I just rocked out for the whole show most of the time. She was right next to me, just watching me and laughing at me at times, you know.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_06But um, they the the set list I was uh because I had no idea like what their set list would be like. I was like, is it gonna be a lot of old stuff and maybe, you know, are they gonna be pulling the Iron Maiden? Hey, let's just play a bunch of crap from our old era and nothing from our modern era, you know, what they're doing right now. They're playing some good songs, Maiden is obviously. So I didn't know what Black Label was gonna do. Because, you know, a band when they get big, when they start and they build their way up big, the later, later stuff, as we can see as Iron Maiden flies, a lot of times doesn't really stay in the set list forever. Yeah. But they opened it's funny, because they opened the show. I don't even know, I still don't know what song they played. I don't know what song they opened with. I don't even know. I I'm sure I've heard it, but I don't remember it. I didn't remember it when I played it. I thought I don't have any recollection of what this is. The next song they played was the one I played you in my car that day that I forced you to listen to. Uh called Name and Blood, which was oh, as soon as they started winning to that on track two, I was I was pumped. I was like, okay, cool.
SPEAKER_05Is that the song with the greatest chorus in the history of meeting?
SPEAKER_06Oh, it's got a really great chorus. You want to hear it? No. Well, guess what? Since you're making a big deal about it right now, since maybe that's tough. No, actually, since you're calling out, I am calling it out like, oh, the greatest chorus ever.
SPEAKER_05I'd rather hear tribute by the actor.
SPEAKER_06Well, here for anyone that doesn't know, let's hear. I'm gonna let just just this is what it sounds like. This is the second song they played, and I love the chorus, so here's how Greatest Chorus in the world. This song's called Name and Blood. It's the opening track from the most recent album. Came out uh in January. But this was the second song they played in this. Oh man, when they went into this dude, uh, it was like, Hell yes! I didn't record any of it either, so I recorded like one song. This riff that comes in. I don't know how you don't like this. The nice pretty interesting? Yeah. Okay, here's where you're not gonna like it. He does, yeah. Well, I mean he probably wrote a lot of Audi, you know, uh music and things. What do you hear is valid? It's ballad, it's like you go, oh my god, I can hear Audi thing. Okay, the chords have come with that. Oh man, I love it. Dude, I was just it's funny when I'm I'm just standing there with Vanessa and I'm you know, and I'm just air guitaring and I'm fist pumped and I'm just singing everything everything I know, and just oh, just having a blast, man. Uh but their set list was pretty evenly distributed from a few older songs and quite a few newer songs. And he he ended up playing part of No More Tears as well. Uh because he because he started it with the guitar solo, and I was just like, oh, how cool to hear, you know, the solo he played, you know. He wrote it, he played it. Um but yeah, Vanessa, she's she enjoyed, you know, the the softer parts of the show. She, you know, I think and she enjoyed watching me, just like watching me just going just nuts, and she was like, she took a video of me just rocking out to one of the songs and singing along, and I guess she thought maybe I would sim her down or something if she put me on video. I'm like, you got the wrong one if you think that's gonna happen. But um, oh man, it was it was a it was a great show. Um They did uh but they did a couple of songs that I just I wouldn't have expected at all, you know. I just thought they'll do a bunch of old stuff, and man, they played a couple of just random songs that had these really cool, softer parts. I was just like, oh god, I loved it, man. But it was kind of funny. He did his band intros, right? And I don't know if you've ever seen much Zach Wilde stuff outside of his music, but he's just like a total goofball, right? And when he introduced the band. Matt, are you still with me? Can you hear me?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I didn't want to say anything in case you played ball.
SPEAKER_06But he when he did his band intro, like he introduces the band and he goes, and he whenever he could he always calls it like if you're from Dallas, you're part of the Dallas chapter, like almost like it's a biker gang or something, right? And he introduces like the bass player, one of the guys, he goes, This is so he's from the Philadelphia chapter, and you know, and everyone cheers the guy. He goes, but but wait a minute, guys, I got something you're not gonna like to know about this guy. And he's you know, he's talking almost like he's trying to get ready to say something funny. He goes, This guy, and we're in Dallas, this guy loves the Philadelphia Eagles, and the whole crowd just starts up well I didn't, because I hate the Dallas Cowboys. But this everyone, the whole crowd just starts booing him incessantly, and it's just and then he says something funny, and then he announces the next guy, and he goes, and everyone cheers him. He goes, but I got some bad news for you guys. He does it for each guy. He introduces them and tells what football team they like, and every time the crowd boos the hell out of him, and then Zach's goes, But I love the Dallas Cowboys, and and everyone cheers. It's kind of it was just funny, like it was a funny band intro, you know. Because most people just kind of say something a little bit, and you know, Mr. Smith, you know, whatever, whatever Bruce's lame intros is.
SPEAKER_05It would have been funny if he had incited a riot by said words, but yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_06But it was it was a good, it was a good show. I mean, I had a I had a really good time. I bought a lot of merch.
SPEAKER_04How long did he play for?
SPEAKER_06Um, well, he did two sets, because you know, he did Zach's. I think Zack Sabbath was about 40 to 45 minutes, and I think uh I think that um black label was about an hour twenty.
SPEAKER_05Okay. So you get two hours of him, basically.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, and you know what I mean, and he's singing. I mean singing guitar, and and I will I want to say this too. He he's playing a lot of riffs and a lot of guitar solos and you know, between two sets, and I really noticed that the guitar solos, at least all the ones I was familiar with, were very similar to the album. Like I was like, it's not like he's just going, let me start here and end here, and I'll just play whatever the hell I want in the middle. It's like he really w had the solos crafted well enough that he could play through them, and I was just like, I was really impressed by that because I thought you think of like a Dave Murray, and you know, he wants to start somewhere and end somewhere, and then he just does whatever in the middle.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_06But I was like, dude, not only is he playing them, he's singing as well, you know? And and he's playing these solos very memorably, the way they are on the albums, and I just I I was so impressed by that because I thought it'd be so easy to just play a you know a memorable lick and then play a bunch of notes and a memorable lick and and I'm sure there is some of that thrown in, you know. Cause like when he when they did uh there was one song he did by in the Zack Savage set where they must have played for twelve or thirteen minutes because he got on the floor and walked all through the audience uh kind of like um Adam D does you know at a kill switch show yeah he walks all and he must have been playing a solo for eight minutes just you know and he's just doing whatever you know during those solos but but it was really I was impressed and uh it was a good show. It was a really really good show. I I just I couldn't I was so excited I was so I was so excited that um that it was that you know that that I got to go you know so oh I forgot to tell you this Matt we went to a pub uh before the uh black label show right and um I just wanted to throw this out there because we were probably within five oh gosh probably within a couple of miles away from where JFK got shot. Oh yeah yep and this d place had a drink and I thought man I know that if Villa was here he would love this is what he would order. His drink it was called Oak Cliff Lee Hazy Oswald I thought it was gonna be something that uh a band like the caveman ninja that was a video game that was a video game. I'm trying to see if there's any other drinks on here that were they did have some kind of a cider at that place. I don't remember what it was but it was delicious. It was on tap. I had a couple of those and Vanessa had a uh I don't know what she had she had I'm looking at the menu to see if I can see what she had um oh I cut the menu off right here there was a there was one drink that had like F you written in the title of the drink it was funny. So what about a podcast Matthew? That's my story about Black Label.
SPEAKER_05I know you were happy to hear it and and and Vanessa enjoyed the show I I bought a lot of merch making sure to keep black label on the road so when you say a lot of merch I have three long sleeve shirts a hat and a keychain and I bought my friend Jimmy a shirt the one I had to deliver to him on uh Sunday I told you I would tell you what concert shirt it was cool yeah so podcast Matthew I only really had one that was worth mentioning I thought it was worth mentioning so I talked about the band Primordial okay and so the vocalist from that band has a podcast called Agitators Anonymous and I don't really listen to it very often I don't think I'd seen it pop up in my feed for a long time and it didn't I was like what is this? I don't remember this because it had been so long but the title kind of piqued my curiosity it was called Where Does a Band's fee go? And so he was just telling um about the revenue for how it's all basically dried up. You don't get album sorry you don't get income from albums anymore. So it's all from live shows and potentially merchandise. And he's explaining about how if they get a fee to go play a festival and whatever he was breaking down that fee. And it'll all depend on the level of band that you are and this sort of thing but where all that money goes to and how you've got to take into account all the logistics airfares and hotels and all sorts and it it's stuff that okay we all realize it happens but to hear for a him firsthand the breakdown was interesting. Like right down to the changes from you know pre-COVID to post COVID how it used to how it used to cost this much to take your guitar with you and then go back with your guitar and all this sort of thing. And it was really interesting to hear like I enjoyed listening to this one.
SPEAKER_06Yeah it sounds interesting.
SPEAKER_05Yeah but that was really the only thing I listened to for the week just him breaking down what money that they actually what little money they come out of at the end of it. And even going as far as to say the merchandise that they closed their merchandise or their online store down because it just wasn't worth it. It was too it became too expensive. Yeah. That was one with shipping and then with like porch piracy where it was telling that like 20% of their their orders don't go where they need to go. Oh gosh. And I was like man there's a lot of factors working against a band. Yeah. Unless you're a really really big band which you went on to but no it was a very interesting listen. Agitators Anonymous where does a band fee go? But he's pretty good he's sounds pretty educated and he's well spoken sure and um yeah he's a good one.
SPEAKER_06I think all podcasters have to be pretty smart and educated and I'm I don't think they do what are you talking about? I'm not talking about anything if you know you know yeah exactly I will say at that black label show though because Zach had the two bands right and he's got Zach Sabbath and he's got black label and I mean a ton of shirts for both bands a ton of merch and I'm like dude has got it done right man he is and he's got lot all the merch you know how you go to a maiden show and there's just a lot of stuff you go I just wouldn't want to wear that it's just like they're trying too hard to make a shirt look like the devil or whatever you know just overly evil or something. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_05They haven't their merchandise hasn't really changed.
SPEAKER_06You've changed well I have yeah but I mean I don't know it's just I find a lot of it I just you know but I I just thought he had a lot of cool merch and you know and he had multiple long sleeve uh opportunities you know I I I walked away with three long sleeve shirts he had like flannel shirt that was long sleeve he had multiple sweatshirts for both bands I mean I was like dude he's killing it out here I can I can just imagine how excited you are I can't wait to mow the grass in that long sleeve shirt. Well I won't wear those on them when I mow the yard come on just your maiden one okay I don't I don't even wear a maiden shirt when I mow the yard does I thought you wore your matter of life and death when you're doing that no oh you don't no no I might have to because it's getting worn out you know at least people go oh that guy has no taste in music when they see me mowing oh he's so you put your maiden one back on and take Zach Sabbath off what'd you say uh we should move along before you play some more I I realize the error of my ways oh you know what thank you for doing that Van Halen um what is it goddamn come on babies uh like a Van Halen ripoff this stuff it's not a ripoff my friend that went to the concert with me is like his favorite band is Van Halen and he didn't say anything about this reminding him of Van Halen I can see how that would a bit like sounds just like it gotta get to the course again I gotta hear it that's what happens when you start logging though I was really thinking better I will be honest though I I used to always think black label society wouldn't be like really accessible music. I thought it'd be like overly overly heavy and it was like I thought oh he went in an area that I'm not interested in and when I finally did discover it I was like oh what made you think that huh what made you think that I think I had heard one of their very early albums and I just maybe you know it's kind of like you hear one song and you go oh no no no I I'm not interested in that okay it's like hearing you know it's like when you heard Wildest Dreams and thought man this album if this is the best they got they might as well hang it up hang it up guy man imagine if they did I would have missed out on so much I know so okay last week we did a waffle zone Matthew oh actually I I did listen to two podcasts real quickly I listened to Monty's Rockcast his most recent episode 294 and I listened and it was a I really enjoyed that um and I listened to an episode from our friend Bill the the myemoth the my the behemoth that is yeah geez we all got spissed out on that him and I I think him and uh him and um Bruno are starting to I think we might have started a little rivalry about which one of them is more of a behemoth at this point.
SPEAKER_04It's pretty hard to walk both sides of a barpwire fence I don't know what I would do there.
SPEAKER_06I know it's tough I don't want to make a choice it's a tough call it's a tough call so maybe each one of them should do a quiet show with their with the reasoning as to why they deserve to be the behemoth do you know what I think that neither of them would do that. That shows the class that they really have yeah I know I know and actually we're probably gonna hear a little more about that um and I but the episode of Bill's podcast I listened to was he did an episode on an album you would be interested in called Special Forces by Alice Cooper. Oh I listened to that was that last week I don't know when it was but it was uh I saw it and I just thought I'd be interested to hear his opinions and and and and I I enjoyed it I mean it's it's a weird album you know it's a weird time of of his of Alice's career so um but there are things that I do like on there for sure.
SPEAKER_05Do you think the album is so bad that it's kind of good when I think of some of those songs on there's like yeah these songs are bad but there's something about it that makes you want to listen to them.
SPEAKER_06It's I think it's it's Alice Cooper he and even though he was really strung out he didn't he never lost his lyrical flair you know his his just special way of putting out really cool lyrics that are fun interesting witty the cop on the block I can't think what it is is it number one cop on the block or something?
SPEAKER_04The prettiest cop on the block there you go that and the special forces song it was kind of weird.
SPEAKER_06Yeah so okay so uh we had uh the waffle last week and it said this week on the waffle zone the behemoth of influence that is Bruno McDonald and then the next number two behemoth Bill three some class that's a bit stained four the love of Judas Priest five did we make the final cut six six six seven deadly sins eight aha Thor Anvil and Matt are back it's quite a deal it is there's a bill you that's not worth paying for there you go there you go and uh Bill had made a comment on this episode said I can hap the title is all yours Bruno McDonald I can happily remain Bill from West Kiyama or Kayama how I I think it's how he says it Kayama is he dissing is he dissing the title that we uh bestowed upon him he doesn't want it I'm not real sure what he's doing here it's kind of hail the great man yeah and I'm trying to look at the the Queek trots and stuff and who did them and finish what you started that is the song I knew that's what it was.
SPEAKER_05It is Van Halen finish what you started off. Oh you wait one two does not sound like it does go and listen to the start of it that song sucks I hate I always hated that song I'm only saying the start of it.
SPEAKER_06That chorus is terrible yes it is uh let's see okay I'm gonna have to just look through the um Queek trots here because I can't pull them up apparently um unless uh maybe I can pull them up on my computer because for some reason they're just not wanting to it's like it's not giving you the option to look at them on my phone. I can see that there's a certain amount of them there but uh it's just not being friendly and showing me what I want to see there which is not which is a little irritating to me. You know we had some Iron Maiden album anniversaries as well Matt we did? Yeah on um September 4th we had the Book of Souls eleven years ago on uh September third we had Power Slave 42 years ago on September third five years ago we had Senjutsu let's see here um well here let me read this thing here uh Gen I think Gen meant to do a queet troll but he didn't quit trot and he uh and he said the best of Judas Priest for Uncle Steve um number 12 is war and I don't know what song that really is it must be something from Nostradamus or something but number he this is his I'm doing him in the counselor's order of course yeah listen to these songs number 11 the best of Judas Priest for Uncle Steve 11 Johnny be good a CD single the best number 10 Wild Nights Hot and Crazy Days number eight Defenders of the Faith number sorry number nine Defenders of the Faith number eight heavy duty now I'd say I don't hate those two songs at all I just don't think they're standout track on that album. I thought this was going to be detention again had returned for my number seven all the way I can't remember which one that is number six you say yes you say yes I say no I say no to number six number four sorry number five I think number five could have been my number one actually never mind I just saw what he has at number one number six number five turning circles god what a garbage number four red white and blue number three living after midnight is a this is a strong top three number two united think about that guy playing that from a team of football players like eighth graders oh god united united and then he could have then he could have you know he could have even played the next song hey I want to pump y'all guys even up even more because we're gonna take on the world and together we can take on the world good God so Ken posted this right yeah and the first here's the first comment but from someone named Simon Katz you are kidding right take on the world was weak compared to other cuts on British steel and United was the weakest track on Killing Machine I said I was trying to like oh god I gotta I gotta clear my name here he's definitely kidding then Doomy McDoom butt said this has got to be a joke I said well I said what you don't love all of these songs and then I went doomie McTasting music buttons okay and I also had a clip of Ace Fraley laughing from the Tom Snyder show in there and oh I have to read the queek that I wrote on it too hashtag would this make Matt laugh very much hashtag hashtag lyrics from the apparition No laugh don't you miss ice Ace I do I'm looking at I keep thinking I had this chance once to go and see him I was sitting in a coffee shop and someone did you should go and see him I know and I I should have done it you you should have slapped the guy that was sitting across from the table with you that said Oh that's right that's right there was someone with me you should have slapped the guy across the table and said I know it's a four or five hour drive but let's go anyway even though you're only going to be here for a day and a half let's do it it was three hours cherry medicine baby but you know what yeah I definitely definitely regret that decision yep don't do it I didn't say that did I I said let's do it we didn't you know I think it I think your let's your don't do it made it made it all that backfire that's what it was did it really though I don't know if it did yeah here we go okay it's still paying for itself now yeah oh there was another album anniversary Matt on August 28th what would that be a matter of life and death twenty years didn't you mention that like a week ago? Oh yeah I probably did actually so uh news well let's see here I know there's uh let me try to do the quiet shows on here and see if I can read them um that's the whole point of me getting on here and then I'm just doing other stuff okay here let me uh posts posts all posts that's what I have to do Matt this is what you happens when you're a professional for like six years okay and then um what we uh got here said um someone made a com a post on uh Twitter Matt that I thought I should read as well yeah every concert should be filmed professionally and sent to ticket buyers via email afterwards that way less people will be on their phones during the show more living in the moment I think that's a great idea so that's interesting uh so I saw Bruce Springsteen I know you don't care for him but that's beside the point so I saw him when I was living in Melbourne let's say around 2004 or so and as soon as his show finished now he's played a three hour show yeah they were selling and I kicked myself because I didn't do it they were selling CDs of that show straight afterwards you shouldn't have to buy it when you just watch the show you should just get one it should be included in your ticket additional revenue stream right just include well then add five bucks to the ticket price for everybody and everyone gets one but then I either either I thought it was an excellent idea.
SPEAKER_05Yeah kicked myself I didn't do it. I wish more bands or any band almost would do something like that.
SPEAKER_06Here we go Matt here's a quiet quote from Lucas in Melbourne Victoria Australia Hey Lucas you if it wasn't for Kiss he says I love a good waffle that talks about Judas Priest and Kiss I agree that Priest's attempt at anthems has not been great but the anthem glove fits better on Kiss at least in my opinion anyways I Love It Loud being the only Kiss song I've sang at karaoke can you read the first sentence that he wrote I love a good waffle oh stop okay so it's been a while if ever that talks about Judas Priest and Kiss he only had to wait for six years for that to happen all right alright now okay next one we got one from Andrew Whitnall Lord Andrew and he says not sure I'm impressed with the new format and presenters on this episode of Judas Priestcast. Oh okay so he's I guess he thought maybe we can wait for Tom He's waiting for Tom to come back I'll be back in five years. Exactly the next one Matt is from Bruno McDonald yoemoth Bruno Behemoth the behemoth that is Bruno and he says Uncle Steve in the most waffle tastic stars aligning day in the whole calendar today is the birthday and this was uh yesterday he posted this yeah the birthday of Roger Waters 83 from Pink Floyd Scott Travis 65 from Judas Priest William Duval 59 from Allison Chains and the only one you might actually recognize Duval or I've heard enough about Paul Walk Tar Savoy. Ah Paul from AHA from AHA yeah he's 65 as well they all share a birthday interesting I'm glad he told me who the AHA guy was because uh I would have had no idea.
SPEAKER_05I would have been even if he dropped that in there I could have told you who that was yeah yeah yeah we all we all loved Paul back in the day.
SPEAKER_06Yeah then there's about 10 different posts retweets on the wily coyote movie that everyone should go see that's that was the heavy hitting part of the the waffle was it yes that was one of them uh oh here's another wild here's another wiley coyote uh let's see here I'm trying to scroll down to make sure I get everything out of the way um what's this uh the behemoth of music okay let's see if it'll actually let me uh Bruno McDonald responded to uh Bill and said I remain the Luke to your Yoda Bill Have a great weekend. So humble I know and let's see if there's any if we can read the people that I don't understand it won't let it Won't even let me see the people that retweeted it now.
SPEAKER_05Oh, did it break the internet? There were so many.
SPEAKER_06No, but it's just it I don't understand why it's I wouldn't have thought so either. I don't understand why it won't let me see that now. Usually it at least lets me see it on your phone. So uh well, um unfortunately, I don't have any way of seeing who reposted this, so let me take a wild stab at it. Here, um Jesse the Riffweiser. Jesse the Riffweiser.
SPEAKER_05Again.
SPEAKER_06Again, um JFK's number one fan in uh Finland.
SPEAKER_05Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_06Cursed. Cursey Prince in Perth, Australia, his role dudiness, Dave in the USA.
SPEAKER_05Billiam.
SPEAKER_06Uh I don't know. I don't know if Bill, I think, I think Bill quit listening or something. I'm not sure. Yeah, I think we we we ran him off.
SPEAKER_05What do you mean we?
SPEAKER_06I think I think Bruno stealing his title ran him off, maybe, you know.
SPEAKER_05It doesn't sound like Bruno is trying to, though.
SPEAKER_06And uh let's see here. Um anything else? Anything else? Uh I don't know. I know Gen Mario Tani has tickets to see uh Megadeth in Japan. And he's excited about it, and I'm excited for him.
SPEAKER_05Oh, so Megadeth not touring with Maiden there?
SPEAKER_06I don't know, man.
SPEAKER_05Oh, they're probably not.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I'm not sure. Well, I mean the comedy. I think I th I think they're playing Australia with him.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay. That's cool.
SPEAKER_06So cause because I know Outbacks told me about that. So if they're playing Australia, they'd play Japan, you'd think, right? Or maybe they're doing some headline shows on their own in Japan as well.
SPEAKER_05So Yeah.
SPEAKER_06So anyway, I apologize to anybody that I left out. And um sorry we didn't do a better job this week, you know. It's just me and Matt.
SPEAKER_05We don't have Kirsty to Come on, like we've let the people down.
SPEAKER_06Oh.
SPEAKER_05They know what they're getting.
SPEAKER_06And I wanted to wish a very happy birthday, because the day we were recording this, it is, or maybe yesterday. Either way, a very happy, possibly belated birthday to a guy that we were sitting in a really cool uh brewery after an Iron Maiden show with last year, whose birthday was yesterday or today, Matthew. Kirsty's better half, Aaron. Happy birthday, Az. Yeah, so happy birthday to you, Aaron, and uh Oh, hang on.
SPEAKER_05Uh that was a good night that that night, wasn't it? Sorry, Az. No birthday kisses for you this time.
SPEAKER_06He got a birthday kiss for me, that's right. I wasn't gonna name the names. Yeah, I was a little um I was a little stumbling that night.
SPEAKER_05I think someone might have told you that's what we do in Australia, and we're really just uh making fun of you to see if you would do it, and you obliged.
SPEAKER_06I mean, Aaron's a handsome guy.
SPEAKER_05Obviously.
SPEAKER_06Obviously.
SPEAKER_05Someone couldn't wait. Someone didn't have to be asked twice to give him a birthday kiss.
SPEAKER_06That's right. That's right. When you're when you're when you're when you're really hammered and you're down under and you you figure what you kind of think what happens down under stays down under, but apparently not. Apparently not.
SPEAKER_08Now I'm in a can you see me? Cause I'm out on my own. When the room gets cold, tell you me, can kiss me. Cause I'm here before not. Happy birthday, Els. Happy birthday, Ellen. Paul Walk Toss of Voice Maha. See you. Happy birthday, Roger Waters and Scott Travis. See ya, cheers, everybody. Hey Sal. Where are we going? See ya, cheers, bye, bye, bye. Cheers, cheers, cheers. This is like one of those endings to a track that just goes on and on. See ya, Mega Jackson. Like the endings of Black Diamond.
SPEAKER_07Yemf Yimfloikin. Hello.
