THM:   0:17
Hello, and welcome back to Episode three of the cookie jar podcast. I'm your host, Tom. And I'm joined by Sam Williams. Our regular.

SJW:   0:25
Hello. God, I love that music Every time just gets me

THM:   0:31
And we welcome Sir Bruce, Sir Bruce is our soon to be regular, but had decided he didn't want to turn up so far.

sBF:   0:38
I just don't like being addressed with the knight of the Realm title that I've not properly earned

SJW:   0:42
and it's just that little regal quality comes in with, You know, when he walks in, I feel like I don't know, I just put my hands behind my back and just take my cap off ahead of us. Welcome. Separate,

THM:   0:55
Sir. Bruce Fitzpatrick needs a slight information. He is current club champs of our distinguished golf Club on DH. He is just one very good accolade. Is the president's putter. Yes. Welcome, sir. Bruce said, do you want to give us a bit of a background? What is the President's putter?

sBF:   1:17
Yeah, sure so the president's putter is an annual match play event, which is played down and rye every January 1st week. Jen, just between the former blues of Oxford and Cambridge So it's Ah, it's really fun. Social event. There's about 150 160 people. Enter it on DH. You play well if you get the hallway to the finally end up playing sort seven rounds in about four days, Um, in all sorts of whether you kind of everyone, there's way kind of play the game in a similar spirit. Good, competitive but quick, Gulf and somehow managed Teo

SJW:   1:58
years old scratch results Haven't got time, Harv here to Bruce and Piss taking. Thanks. That's very kind, sir Bruce. But genuinely it's a hell of an achievement in Gulf. I mean, when you look at David Cannon Yeah, famous goal from Photographer, you cheque it out. You got Tiger there with Presidents Cup week or two before pictures of Lee Westwood winning in Abu Dhabi, whatever the week after, And then you you sandwich way Tio covered in a quarter's up in a filthy blazer. I mean, it's it's pretty impressive stuff, mate. So use congressional. Tell us a bit about yourself for the benefit of our listeners around the world.

sBF:   2:36
So I'm 24. I finished my Masters Oxford last year, and I'm just starting my law conversion course down in London, just dragging out academia in studying for as long

SJW:   2:48
as I possibly can. You on the podcast. Grand scheme?

sBF:   2:51
Yeah. Yeah, in a bit of a retainer, But you're quite competitive goal. For I like playing as much as I can playing with these two choppers playing foursome singles, whatever, Blackwell. And beyond. So hopefully handicap it a little bit this year. Maybe playing Cem some more competitive

THM:   3:12
than your What's your goal for this year?

sBF:   3:14
My gold. I haven't really thought about it too much. Actually. Lies any d process goals rather now come going. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I would like to get to scratch this year. I think club champ Successful defence. That would be nice. That beer, that'd be busy. People got got got this man across the sofa and different males. Definitely my little brother as well. We'll probably be turning up. And he's been playing some good stuff recently at Blackwell. So yeah, it's actually, you know, we're getting good, solid competitive section really wears nice. Iran's Keane's improve

SJW:   3:59
your quite keen on your swing as well. Big swing enthusiam.

sBF:   4:02
Yeah, I try to be Yeah, I think I probably think? Well, there's a number of swing thoughts. Gotten better, but I'm definitely keen on you know, the technical side of things and learn about the golf swing. You're

THM:   4:15
not concerned that having too many swing thoughts could slow your swing down?

SJW:   4:19
Well, it's not way round with four days. Was it seven rounds in four days every four days? I'm amazed you did that. Was it Flood didn't

sBF:   4:32
get about time. Actually, I love you know, we played the A front nine in the final on Sunday afternoon in one hour and 15 minutes. I haven't really

SJW:   4:44
got to come back for that.

sBF:   4:45
Yeah, so, you know, I mean, I think

SJW:   4:50
the first after I've taken 59. Yeah. You've been out pledges. You know, you've just been about seven drives.

sBF:   5:01
Yeah, well, neither compliments. Gaby. Early on working class. It's definitely fully fully deserved

THM:   5:07
on the dashing. The president's putters. All match play.

sBF:   5:10
Is your master much play?

SJW:   5:14
That's not wrestling. When you had with those, We're not alone. I feel like I play a pretty big balance in terms of match play and stroke play. Go. I think I think they're very, very different games.

sBF:   5:24
Yeah, I'd agree with you. I think match play maybe plays into my hands bit. Maurine the old definitely have the odd meltdown. High number, um, which isn't good for stroke play, obviously. But in match play, if you kind of come blow hot and cold and, you know, put a few birdies and then play the rest of the holes pretty steadily and only have you know, one or two so of other on the card, then that stands in pretty good. Stead was obviously strokeplay, particularly for 36 holes in one day. That's, um I don't see you gotta be more defensive, but I feel like, yeah, you gotta be maybe a bit more strategic, and you've got it, really? Just trying to limit the number of mistakes you make. But yeah, that's just my take

THM:   6:11
on when you play match play. You keeping in your mind? You know, I'm two up on one up, and this is what this is what? Yeah. Affect the way you play.

sBF:   6:17
Yeah, I try not to play the man too much. Usually, I think you know, if you could just play, play your game and keep an idea in the back of your head what you are like relative to part That that was the way I did it down in Rye a few weeks ago. But, um, for all

SJW:   6:33
the piss take. And I think there's a lot of truth in what you were saying earlier when we actually come into it, They were playing golf together this afternoon and I said said she liked, you know, how'd you deal with that sort of puts stuff? Because, you know, you can have good times, bad times, round of match, play golf and you're like, Well, you know what if I've got kind of the guy I find if he's 35 feet ways got birdie putt and I've got six feet for birdie? I'm just worried about my own part. I'm not thinking about the other guy, because if he knocks that, but put it in on DH, I then miss mine Or if it even if I hold it for a birdie, it still feels like a loss. You just kind of disregard. Yeah, It kind of puts you mentally in about space because you're worried about things that you can

sBF:   7:13
clear. Yeah, I think that's I believe I can do that more regularly, and I could get in that frame of mind more that will stand me in good stead. What's that mean? Better said for a straight play competitions when I play him in the future because yes, you say like, I think you can make a huge era with match play if your opponent's 35 feet away and you just sort mentally written off the whole. Or maybe that Mr Green and you definitely written them off and then they go on, hold it all of a sudden it's like, well or massive momentum swings get very distracted on a bit kind of confused and discombobulated. So it's Yeah, I think in all formats. It's good to just try and focus on on the stuff you can control more really. Um, what do you reckon till after today's experience? Um,

SJW:   8:03
today's experience from

THM:   8:04
me didn't go particularly well. We played a format of full walled off that my distinguished friend Sam is better at describing that I am, But it's called Wolf.

SJW:   8:17
How did you find it, Thomas? It enjoyable?

THM:   8:19
No, no. I lost a lot of money. I played OK golf. I played a level of golf that on an ordinary day wouldn't really lose me a lot of money. But

sBF:   8:31
I mean, he played on the kneecap and one under my reminded

THM:   8:37
one under my handicap through 15 holes in the I walked off the course of 15. Not a temper tantrum, but Bruce was taken so long to get the ball.

SJW:   8:45
I want you £2 back on that last hole, so you really think and then I

THM:   8:53
did my part of that hole

SJW:   8:54
house up for sale. More for our listeners. What a format. That is an excellent format, but it's so hard to explain. Strap

THM:   9:07
in for four minutes of

SJW:   9:08
sounds that way. Get like that sad music radio. For while I explain,

THM:   9:13
you know, having any museum by. I'm going to switch the mike off the members, so go

SJW:   9:17
No, don't keep it on because But I remember going down playing not golf tour with a few boys. There's four of us played a bit of wolf on the few months before, I was like, I trust me, this is the game. This is so it's absolutely class. And then after about five minutes, we trying to ramble through the rules and explanations. You could just see them going. Yeah, yeah, Well, most thinks a table, I think. Anyway, the way this works, you number off randomly on the first tee tee, Paige's throw balls and, yeah, just however you want to do it, you have to assign people in number 123 or four. Let's say, for example, on one. Bruce is to Tom your third. And then let's pick 1/4 guy say cows here

THM:   9:56
or go. We are very inclusive.

SJW:   9:58
Of course we are. Course we are. Sorry on DH your numbers. 123 and four. That's the order. You tea often. So you always take off in that order or some variant of that order. So what I mean by that is whole one. I'm one. I would tear first. And then the way Wolf works is you get to pick your partner on the tea. You can only pick your partner when they've hit their shot after they've hit it before the next person place. So imagine I stick one down the middle. Bruce fans went out right, but it's not too bad either. Gotta pick him or not having or not having it'll third person tees off. I can pick them, will not pick them. But then, by the time the fourth person's teed off and I've gotta have the fourth person or ago Wolf, if you go if you travel the steak so it's a money game, you play for a certain amount per unit, and there's trouble that trouble the odds because they have to pay three people out rather than just one.

THM:   10:49
So when you're paying 50 Pierre unit, which is what we did, losing £20 is quite

SJW:   10:55
just quite impressive. Just me. You'll lose every hope based on triple

THM:   11:01
upped the stakes and a few a few and lose them as well.

SJW:   11:03
It's so cool, isn't it? So what happens is you have that order. On the first hole I was, I was the person who's first. Then, on the second hole, I dropped to the back of the order. Yeah, and then 234 followed by 1/3 hole, 34 followed by one and to get around. But the cool thing about the game and in a few boys names. But you're on the team, you always thinking differently. It's like, What's the stroke index on this whole who's got shot here? Okay, he's in play par. Threes play really different to par five's power forwards was a long hole, and it's just cool. You come off the tee, your fist bumping with a different guy, or unless you're a complete dickhead like meals over here, you might go wolf when 150 yards back up, three guys sharpening their wedges around the green on seven. Just a cool former because you increase the stakes of the 1st 4 You play for a unit per hole. 2nd 4 holes, you play for two units, then three units on until you finish. The 16 told you playing four units o quite quickly. When holds a rolling up, you could have like before. You know, you've got, like, a £10 part. If you've got wolf, you get £30 part in your hands. Just gonna

sBF:   12:09
throw in a £12 part

SJW:   12:11
of a £12 for burns. The edge just go

THM:   12:15
throwing some defence to myself. That seven fold that I shot the same as you and Tom. And if it wasn't for Bruce rolling in a 10 foot of a birdie, I think would have been justified. Him call my wolf.

SJW:   12:27
I mean, it was It wasn't

THM:   12:28
It wasn't a good decision

sBF:   12:29
when I was in question place off the tee before we before you got up there and seen it

SJW:   12:34
was smoked it down the left, and he didn't go near picking. Made You know why I didn't pick me? Because you're short games Because you were still yet to get on the team bus on that. When you fanduel out right, he thought I'm gonna be the biggest shopper in the world if I don't. If I pick Bruce from here, just looks like it looks like I want a safe exit from the hole. But it's interesting

THM:   12:54
is because you get a psychology off, right? Well, I wasn't. I mean, I was in the middle of fairway, but it wasn't a good shot. And I was the ways back, and you guys were up, but I could have decided to half my losses. Essentially, Bruce being in what I thought was in the bushes and they could have been, you know, he can take take half this loss with 1,000,000 but I decided not to do that and take a

SJW:   13:15
look. Think

sBF:   13:18
you got that long to make a decision. If you've gone down to the last man and it's between taking them, organise your own. Because people across the way you walk

SJW:   13:27
off five minutes longer. Sometimes you're related. Great format, though. The American's place we called Warhammer. We want to dig out the rules on this, and I think it's basically like a wolf on like steroids, right? The Air Jack's another level of gambling toe. There's some

sBF:   13:47
good videos or speak playing a game similar to that might be that game, actually. But having not played wolf before price of two weeks ago, I got to say It's now my new favourite format for us to go to you when you got four ball on your hands. You want to make it, make it more interesting, informal back because the game's very

SJW:   14:06
quickly gets good. I think if you got same handicap, yeah, it's very balanced.

sBF:   14:10
Yeah, if you've got some taking a very one sided kind. If you've

THM:   14:14
got some fairly competent golfers, as long as all of you are steady, Russian Stableford is a good one. Explain so Russian Stableford as you go in. It's a four ball game. Ah, we'll call the players for argument's sake Supers Sam Cow and Tom on DH. You draw teams, so there appears. So it could be me and Sam against the Bruce and cow on DH. You've just played your own bull Stableford. But I'm the twist on it being that when you get to the end of the whole, you multiply the two schools together that you get in a hole, so the power.

SJW:   14:56
So if I'm with you, Tom, I've got, like, 432 And you've made three for three. Yeah, we were getting times three is six points.

THM:   15:03
So we get six points in the first hole.

SJW:   15:06
I made three for three and I blocked the whole and I've got no point. Zilch 00 Meanwhile,

THM:   15:13
Brutus bristle So we get silly. So I've played in aa a ah, Russian Stableford, where we've played a part five ah, the eighth, a Czar home course on DH. Three of the other four ball birdied so that they were four for four. So there was four times for which is one team got 16 points. Ah, Then the third person birdied. That's another four. Andi, I blogged she never So the other team has gone up 16 and we've gone up. Yeah, zero Such a cold, brutal. But you need to like both. You need to be firing. Otherwise, it say

sBF:   16:00
you walk off with 12 points

THM:   16:03
at the end of the end of a round. I think so. You know, a lot of golf is like this. It's off a man format where you've got the the two from Fort Account, right? The best two from four. And I think there's so many little twists you can play on that, like so long as you're willing to still play self out there. But like, for instance, would be good to play. And I'm the best to the worst

sBF:   16:23
to school. Yeah, worst ball, actually. Quite your blood blood Sum's an American term. Always

SJW:   16:31
think term I've got from

sBF:   16:33
Tiger Woods PGA Tour for

SJW:   16:34
something. You're having a bad day,

sBF:   16:37
but yeah, seeing the group's he play force that we played Greenson, so you'll receive both. You'll drive off, and instead of you picking which drive, you gonna say your opponent's ticket. And obviously if if you if you know, if one of these having a bad day with a big stick. Then you're opposed. Just gonna pick.

SJW:   16:55
So we'd like to hear more of my listeners on different things, like playing snow. There's all these cool things you can get

THM:   17:02
really tired up playing the same thing every time I got off course. And

SJW:   17:06
it's just last night to mix examples. Snake snakes. Putting, isn't it?

THM:   17:11
It's a three step, isn't it?

SJW:   17:13
Oh, yes. Next three point. Oh, yes. Not you. Just an adult. Yeah, this rolls up throughout around. You know what they think is the camels. That's the one sound. So that's one against sand Picks up the bill. We could We could spend hours on this, but we're not going to get through over. They want to talk about tonight. I'll wait. But Wolf 100% the game four rounds before we get you to 16 holes. If you are the unlucky guy like Tom Mills, you 35 units in the hole to sixth grade. We stand on the 17th to you, then get to be the wolfman for those next two holes. Which means you get to pick the order on those on those two. It's not

THM:   17:50
necessarily the last home.

SJW:   17:51
Well, okay. As long as a person who, if you're then whoever's last on those two holes individually. But you also get picky state. So you guys got a shot at redemption or you've caught it. We're going to significantly increase your losses.

THM:   18:03
Or you can take someone down swinging with you.

SJW:   18:05
Since a man just verify

sBF:   18:09
bets on that, someone drills today, being one of sorry looking, we're gonna reschedule his po cost.

SJW:   18:18
That kid's bad about the whole thing was off.

THM:   18:22
Very good. But a lot has happened since the last part. Yeah, so the USDA is on that The art of release the distance report. Very well, with a bit of talk going around. That's the distance report. Obviously being the shock, they hit the ball too far. How

SJW:   18:42
do you feel about it? What's your slows time? Well, I think if

THM:   18:47
they dial it back, if they introduce, um, you know, a ball that spins more or whatever they do, you're still gonna have these dudes that are hitting the ball a lot further than some of the other guys. It's only everything's gonna preserve Is the current course architecture. Andi, I think if they implement a rule system for the pros that they don't implement for the amateurs. It's going to make the game far less relatable than it currently is. Like I'm watching, we're watching the pebble pro am at the moment, which is, of course, I've played. And if they were playing it, you know, they were playing a different kind of sport that I just wouldn't make it relates. But it's interesting for me because I've played this course. I'm kind of relate to what they're doing. It looks nothing like

SJW:   19:35
Pebbles, a great example of somewhere. That's long. Yeah, like granted, that shuts him. Tease right back. They made holes bigger and bigger as the game. They reduced powers on hold with the greens of small like it's got a lot more to defend against. You watch courses out there like a few weeks ago on the planet Torrey Torrey Pines, like 7700 yards. I mean, like the average golf is not gonna be able to play off the tips. There they go and play there. They're not really playing. The equivalent stand could cost what the pros and I actually just think there's only so far you can go buy, lengthen the course. I think it's really difficult to know what to do. Do you start toe make changes in equipment? If so, how do you introduce changes to equipment for professionals and amateurs that affects them both in the way that you want to get the right and then what you do with courses? I mean, I don't know. Bruce Thoughts Europe Bomber.

sBF:   20:23
Well, it's tough. I think you got sloppy drives to 80. Didn't one disgusting. Factually incorrect? Um, yeah. I mean, you guys have hit it on that in terms of how do you it's not. It doesn't seem the right thing to do is hold by implication that there is the buzzword of the moment to separate them. The professional game from the amateur game. I don't really think feasible in golf because it's the worst thing. Yeah, one of the great things about you boys. You can say that you can relate a bit more to the courses that the pros playing. We can go and play those courses. Golf being essentially, you playing your ball against the golf course. You can kind of get a feel for just how could these guys are. And I think if you just for some reason decided to introduce a higher spinning ball for the Pro's, but not for the EMS. I mean, how does that play out? Well, in top level amateur events where those guys are essentially playing a circuit that's a breeding ground for professional golf, inventing things like the English Amateur, the British Amateur, US Amateur, that kind of stuff for those courses, then gonna have to be lengthen out 75,000 yards or if not Mauritz. But then again, you know, Do you think that the point they're making is essentially the correct one? Which is we can't just keep go on going on lengthening golf courses. I mean, I'm surprised we haven't found a 8000 yard golf course. Yeah, I mean, the one at Torrey Pines two weeks ago was 7700. Seems like run of the mill course at the moment on the US tour seven and 1/2. And that just doesn't seem like a sustainable fishing. Yeah, 15 under, and yeah, yeah, I think interestingly, like what isn't really being talked about how we gotto maybe bring back a bit more strategy to the game. I mean, from a few people I know got in place with the really cool US Open courses, US PGA courses out in America, Baltar's roll, the lower courts there being a case in point that went through a phase of tiger proofing after Tiger came on the scene and just, you know, Mom, allies, these golf courses, they thought, Well, we've got to make them longer. We gotta put a load more rough in They got rid of a lot of the original like architectural principles that the brilliant architects put in. And now, like a couple of years ago, members have finally go around saying, Actually, I wasn't the right decision. The courses play worse for the ordinary membership as a result of it, and what we should do is just make it a bit more strategic. Bring Maxim or short mown grass areas supposedly made beans, and

THM:   22:50
Phil Mickelson has got a point where it comes out in the press recently and says, like we need tto, give the athletes a bit more credit, you know, way just our athletes and we're hitting the ball further than they used to.

sBF:   23:02
Yeah, but maybe there's a bigger margin error. Is the margin for error too big Now, is anyone really gonna say, like Jack Nicklaus back back in the day? I mean, he's like a massive the physical shape he was and he was in a like a real physical specimen. Gary Player as well. Everyone knows

THM:   23:17
about carry plague on the gym

SJW:   23:20
every day, just like touch a shred of bacon. I

sBF:   23:23
mean, those guys, like, I think they were very athletic athletic back in the day, Arnold Palmer as well. I mean, they're they're all very strong golfers. And yet things have moved on now. Sure you got guys who would maybe playing the MBA or the NFL in another life, who returning to golf, which is great. But maybe the fact that they're playing a ball that's just spins no amount compared to the old sort of way.

THM:   23:46
Saying that back in the day that you know Nicklaus and Palmer we're knocking and drives up there. And your average golfer like you are I will watch him then. Yeah, I can't. The boy.

sBF:   23:56
Yeah, I think I have the case.

SJW:   23:59
Remember, like years and years. Like going back to the 40 50 years used have a smaller bowl on Smaller War used to go significantly further than that we're playing with now, so you get it track up in Cheshire Waco Delamere Forest on the eighth power for its like sort of 4 10 Something like that. Elevated tee dogleg left, a sort of fairway run drowned on throw away. You go to the back tee there and there's little plaque there from Remember. Stuck it on the green, back in satellites, whatever. And you're like serious job, because, I mean, you can hit your best drive with wind off the right shoulder. You could stand there all day bruise you wouldn't get nearer for then. Clearly, they had a situation back then with the ball. That is correct, but I think the real tough question for you know, the USDA the rest of the game to solve here is how do you how do you make changes that make it that rain the distance back? Because I think we all agree that needs to happen. But in a way that means your amateur golfers at all levels on professionals still play on a level footing in terms of the equipment I wouldn't want to see any different standards there. And I think you're spot on. I think you've got to bring back some, you know, bring more strategy into golf Hole. Yeah, May you know, slick run our slow pea green. Smaller greens, you know, Huge risk award shots on every thing. Is nothing

THM:   25:18
about the especially the PGA courses is There's nothing like links golf, but the bunkers they play over there, they almost aim for them. It's like what? You know, greenside bunkers. That's fine. It's no no issue. Yeah, you know, if you have if you had a grass trap or something, that was really, you know, Tight mon proper grass bunker. They are so hard to play off and you've seen people they call fast friends and they were just there, and they just chipping and watch the ball come back to their feet. And for these boys, it's so much harder to play that shot than it is. Just a splash. Our 15 yard bunker shot. It's just no biggie for them.

sBF:   25:56
Yeah, I mean, obviously we're watching Pebble Beach now. Aren't we watching the second round the 18 tea there? And that's of course, that has the smallest greens on tour, maybe just just slightly above in the rankings. Harbour Town, which also has really small greens. And, you know, they obviously played the U. S. Open here, which Gary Woodland won in 2019 and the course then was just over 7000 yards, which is significantly short than the average tall course on the winning score was what, 12 13 under? So they didn't they didn't completely, you know, tear it apart by any stretch. Andi just goes to show you and you've got smaller greens. You've got a few more options in terms of clubs to hit off the tee. August is another course where maybe a bit more generous off the tee unless you want to really take on some pins, in which case you gotta put it in the right spots, Tiger was saying in a promotional video. While about that, you can't miss that. You can't miss greens at Augusta Pin high because although the grass and the lies were also tightly mon, there's not much thick rough around the greens, the slopes so severe that you're

SJW:   27:01
just not allowed to get up

sBF:   27:02
and down. Whereas I mean, I get the impression I'm not played courses like that. You know, Torrey Pines and some of these other ones Aaron Hills where they like, you know, north of 614,700 yards. But I imagine they probably be quite big, flat greens, which I mean, the guys you

SJW:   27:17
can tell, because when the building, of course that big. Gotta also bear in mind the amateurs playing in there. Yeah. How can you possibly have tricked up small greens on 7700? Of course. Even the pros are going to get around. And you're right. You look at the Harbour town. Last year, the wind whipped up for a few days. No machine in the park. Yeah, that's not a long course into corners. You know, the half of shape shots around, trees are thinking about it. And, you know, it's not all the not just that. It's not just the bat, right balls. What's making all that up? Goes the

sBF:   27:46
ball? Yeah. I mean, you know, this is quite a few goes on YouTube on there. Who test out, You know, a driver from 2019 with a driver from 2009 or 1999 or 1989 on DH. I think the biggest difference. They're all those. Maybe not too much of a difference in terms of the driver, how far it goes. Maybe 15 20 yards. If you had to take a ball from 89 a driver from 89 then put that against a ball on a drive from 2019. That be a significant difference. They're thieves. Boys of fighting in

THM:   28:17
the middle of the back. Yes, most mothers don't do

sBF:   28:19
so. Yeah, In a way, it's actually giving Maura advantage to the pros to the pros than the Emmys, because the price is going to hit it out of Senator the face more often. They're gonna have that

SJW:   28:30
no more forgiving than the amateurs. You don't have a big face there. Well, I think they had, like allowing the amateur to get away with more off the tee. But I think

sBF:   28:39
for a lot of damage is playing with more spins. Probably a good thing. I mean, it would be interesting to see how it affect the professional game if you all of a sudden reduced the size of the driver heads on DH. You had a ball that spun a lot, Mohr because you talk about I mean, people talk about guys like Nicolas and Greg Norman, who were just known as excellent drivers of the golf ball because they were so precisely how centred their contact was. Where is, you know, if you hit it out? If you hit it off centre with an old driver in a spinning ball, you get that wrong side of what's now was a result of radar and Trackman and knowing a bit more about it, you get the wrong side of the spin loft curve and just rates. Yes, you have so much spin on it from an office sent it here. It's very hard to keep on the fairway, so I I think attacking it threw the ball and maybe a couple of the driver heads would go a long way. I don't know how much kinds of names on the

THM:   29:34
on the US PGA. It's lose lose, isn't it? We

SJW:   29:38
think it's hard the amateur game doesn't damage, is gonna hate. It's a

THM:   29:41
pro's gonna hate it. It's going to take so long for

SJW:   29:45
Bruce is probably too young to remember the block. So despite his title of surgeries is a relatively fresh night. I've never seen a lotta Those things were like knocking a knob. But around the world is like, Seriously, I've hit chips today that would cut the larger half Really It one bunker shot. You have to put the ball in play on the way to cover up the back of the

THM:   30:09
day. The blotter. There was no one bowl rule.

SJW:   30:13
That's right. You could change. Made home.

sBF:   30:16
Yeah, you could, you could You could

THM:   30:17
knock off with you can knock off for the top flight and then drop a Bridgestone infield approach.

SJW:   30:22
I think that'd be interesting. I think we should do that. Then we should order Symbol Art is online on eBay. Tryingto doesn't like the sort of 1992 tireless Balata compression nine. See, whatever they were and just start hitting on. Guarantee you into any weird you any mid I things going balloon up. It's gonna start. I do not need or spend a nickel. I mean, I know you don't have your one that says in the middle of the air. Watch this. That was one time go. Backspin. on seven today, 110 years. I've never seen him smile so much in his life.

THM:   30:59
I just wasn't aware that I was even capable of doing back. I took

sBF:   31:02
a slice of ripping the cover off the ball, just loving it. Mid flight. A couple of friends mine actually play with hickories up the old course just for their lefts and Andrews on DH. They're both like good sort of scratched, plus one golfers on what's in them. Using modern ball with hickory clubs was hilarious because they could no get the ball in the air or just keep it anywhere near off in play on. I wonder whether, if you had a blast would be a bit more.

THM:   31:28
I guarantee he'll snap a hickory. You think I'm fat? It that would that would be the end of a

sBF:   31:34
pretty rugged things. It's not just like a little bit of, you know, with me being a bamboo or balsa wood or something like that.

THM:   31:41
No, I do not just give me steal.

sBF:   31:44
We should test that, though. I think Sam orders and glasses off eBay, but also going on Jack Nicholas 1980

SJW:   31:51
percent drive way to honour we'll give

THM:   31:55
it a go way back. I think we should give that little vlog for the for the for the Instagram Storey and get that too on

SJW:   32:01
over the legs. I'm Zain,

sBF:   32:03
but I think by and large we probably were on the same page saying that you know, the R A and the USDA moves to curb distance are probably quite well intentioned, right from four amateur golfers in his faras. You know, we don't Blackwell, for instance, can't get any longer is a golf course because the external boundaries of the courses way literally can't make any longer. I met a lot of courses, you know, all over the world where members of field saying they're like they play would be so disappointed if our golf course became obsolete.

SJW:   32:35
Enjoyable tracks I've played had been passed 69 past seven years. Things that are, you know, off the backs playing 6500 yards. Yeah, that's plenty. Yeah, Actually, if you've got small greens, you know, something that makes you think on the tea somewhere you got to think about your approach or what you gonna try and put it That's much more enjoyable than standing there and thinking I was going over my shoulders on the next drive. Six and another four on another four. Well,

THM:   33:01
way talked last week about our love of winter golf, and I played our home track and they decided to put it back off the tips. And I think he got too. About the fifth hole before, I had no idea, man, really. And that's a relatively small track in the winter. I know. But when these tracks are playing so long and you just like Oh, okay, it's driver three wood driver where driver rescue

SJW:   33:28
is fine, It's just hot. And that's where the term championship golf course would hate. That is that Plus, seven says, That means I always thought a championship golf course is a I don't know. I thought his plus Talavera over any championship golf courses in my head, then 7072 par. Usually boring a sin, it's usually owned by a large hotel group. It's usually got water features that are invisible of fantasy of the car park somewhere that's like spouting a bit of water. You know, it's the absolute absolute mediocrity. In my experience, Long may sure kind of crafted golf courses continue. And actually, I think it would be really interested from our listeners to hear about, you know, kind of quirky last you guys have played. You know, I think you know, if you want to throw any invites away, well taken invites,

THM:   34:22
you want to invite So, Bruce to see what he's got to offer you A You can show you how to hit one.

SJW:   34:29
So yes, where we're at Pebble Beach. Three tracks played out there. I think it's gonna be interesting to see you brings in this week. What's

THM:   34:34
your what's your opinion on this? This programme. But I

SJW:   34:39
I like it. I like the programme side. Uh, you know, for me, there's not enough seeing the amateurs play. I'd be really interested in some of the kind of low handicappers you've got people out there like Tony Romo played in PGA event last year. Plus two, I think. Yeah, you've got an exemption. Isn't a

sBF:   34:58
primordial areas. Yeah. Yeah, I think the 80 and tease. Quite cool. Former. I mean, the closest thing we have ever in Europe's probably done hell up inside under its last every October. And that's just great fun to watch and great Joan walk around as well because no one takes it too seriously. You know, it's it's just, you know, it's great that it's a still a prestigious professional event, but also you get, you know, celebrities from other walks of life and other decent, really decent amateur golfers you get, you get to play in the event. So I think, yeah, it's good. Life is good for our sport. Have some a variety and mix it up a bit. You don't think

THM:   35:34
I think this guy could offer us a touch more with the just showing Cem, Cem Shanks and just just give us a bit of hope,

SJW:   35:43
But I would just want to see people like Robert people like Justin Timberlake play a few holes that wanna come into their round. So, like, you know, where we have the feature groups and watching Howard Varney. Great Greg a mistake. Five under, Well played, fantastic to say, but the same right. I'd really like to get in to see Justin Timberlake around

sBF:   36:03
playing there. Think

THM:   36:06
Bill Murray is there?

SJW:   36:08
Uh, yeah, he's that every lives literally calling. Just

sBF:   36:12
Dunhill. Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was done Ellen this religiously because they're probably the only two prime events really on. There are two fantastic venues. I mean to play some Andrews, Kingsbarns, Carnoustie and then Pebble Spyglass Monterrey. I didn't really get much better than that. If you're

SJW:   36:31
how would you feel if you were like I don't know, Victor Prayers went up. It's a man dressed in a

sBF:   36:35
last practise on the range next to a couple of weeks ago. Yeah,

SJW:   36:40
he's actually in the side of the street because he struck the ball back then.

sBF:   36:43
You He's way lives in one day. How can he

SJW:   36:47
answer that question? Teo, He says No, he's arrogant. Stage. Yes, he's probably lying game on a

sBF:   36:55
windy day, playing wall for Black Girl. I think

SJW:   36:57
you come on, start thinking having, But how would you feel if Obama in a pro am rather you've got Victor? Perez is coming in. I think that was his first major major victory. Wasn't first proper sort of European told

sBF:   37:11
serious victory. We're not going to not confuse the

SJW:   37:14
terminology. Please, Can I just cheque a significant win of his career and you're the You're the amateur, that's they're paying like 50 grand whatever for a seat for the weekend and and you've got to try and get in just like stay out of the guy's way. Even they aligned properly.

THM:   37:31
Director is giving it. Victor, do you need a DEA raid on this Fuck off.

sBF:   37:36
Yeah, I think it's right. It's Gryphon left. What clubs? You fancy it into 17.

THM:   37:43
I'm taking. I'm taking my forearm. What you taking? I'm taking away. Just leave me alone dialled in here

SJW:   37:50
and I think it's a cool tournament. Victor Hovland How soon my money is on this weekend, although he's yet to play power box office, they got on trains waiting

sBF:   37:58
at the moment, nor is doing quite well. I mean Norrin, nor is looking pretty good. He's had a quiet couple of years as any

SJW:   38:05
normal looks like. You could stick one of the hostel intothe.

sBF:   38:08
Maybe he's got that path going so far left, and he's attacking the balls so steeply is no way. In no way is catch him anywhere near dazzle. Well, I don't know. He's just compel it compressor. You

THM:   38:20
love a good swing? No, Nisa Bruce.

sBF:   38:23
He doesn't He doesn't love it.

SJW:   38:25
Radio All nation Dustin John, radio all, Major Johnson was on the spot. A deal on that. Johnson was

THM:   38:32
on the sky zone like that. Hit balls on DH. Claude Harmon's over the top of him, and he's going like So this is before the open. Is that Dustin? Just just just knock one out there. 300 dozens of. Okay, so he just likes it. A belt one. Really? Hi. Hi. Little fade. He's okay. Just just just imagine. It's really windy, like, knock a little no one blowing up there for us. We're gonna What? Just once. You animated? Hell, yeah. I was just staying closer to it. I don't know why that does anything, but

sBF:   39:05
Yeah, he's like, I understand that. Placed a lot. Why? Denies?

SJW:   39:08
Ithe Best Dustin job ever saying wass. Remember a few years ago before the Masters, he fell down the stairs to pull out here. It wasn't anything. He was just It's getting slammed. This is so Anyway, a year later, you know, par three thing, they've got their kids, their wives and all go round. So they're sort of interviewing him on the between, like things like 93 on DH. Come in. It's like Sarah stuck something like she's likes an interview and Dustin and Game. So I presume you're in a presumably bungalow this year. Then Dustin, you know, just to avoid any set of issues with steps, you know, proper nice, pretty sarcasm. And he's just for Fulham replied. Just Guys know? Okay with houses, usually I was just a one off. I'm usually got no problems upstairs in my own heart. I'm usually, E said, has a child. All right, Johnson. I want a multi millionaire. Anti barriers. But

sBF:   40:15
where are many riveting philosophical God's house? Similar Storey? Actually, Butch and maybe Claudio's knows Butch, actually on on a podcast was saying that a few years ago. You know, Dustin, still renowned, is like best driver in the world, one of the best drivers in the world at the Mac Roi, you know, very good all around game, but his wedge play was definitely letting him down. So I think Bush and George is said by a track man. Bring it down to the range Floridian next time we're there mean for a lesson. Well, just, you know well, we'll just decide that you gotta hit certain numbers and it's fairly straightforward and you will just tied it. You want to play that way? So anyway, brings his trap. Man down. Sets up with his brother, Austin. Claude and Butch. Turn up there. Right? Right. Okay. You got a trap, man. Working. Dusty says no. It won't turn on. Turn on the charges was like, No, you obviously got a charge. Revenues. Okay, Is there a plug socket around it? And they were on a

SJW:   41:14
grass, right? What were you expecting Dustin's hard time? This part? Well, if you listen, Teo. Yeah? If you want to come on like we could definitely make space will be a lot nicer person.

THM:   41:29
Speaking of great drivers, Dustin on DH. You mentioned Rory a moment ago. We don't have much longer left in the party. We need to wrap up, um, picks to the first major the way we're gonna put our prostates down.

sBF:   41:48
Some. You shouldn't be about leash.

SJW:   41:49
Theo. Visit. Oh, yeah.

sBF:   41:55
So samples were out playing Wolf. We were having a chat about Harold's everyone looking going into the season. Augusta Reno, far away in the grand scheme of things. And Sam, just way out of left field is pulled. Martin Lee should great player. Grab that. Please go. Just

SJW:   42:13
one day of the week. So firm a lovely on the last day. Still one Boyd in Came from Way behind. Seems like a

THM:   42:21
quality bloke as well.

SJW:   42:22
Masters before we come on the So look. It's been a tricky one for him in the Masters last year. Finished nine 2017 t 43 2016 Miss Cut in qualifying. 50 Miss Cut 2040. But he tamed T Foreign 2013 didn't qualify 12 or 11 and then cut in 2010. So I mean, on paper doesn't feel like it sets up to his eye. But, you know, I think he's got the game for this is an all rounder, just solid, solid golfer on DH for May. You know, Masters winners tend to be people who've been around on tour for a swell, you know, not one by rookies. You're more a cow is probably gonna go and win this now because, you know, I mean, crust cursed the commentator. My record on picking this is clearly not good. 111 pic and Finn out blew up nowhere. So come on Web in a minute. But yeah, Lishman was there. I really fancy capture for a major. This year. We'll buy Rambo. It's got to be done. Is now

sBF:   43:23
third in the world looking pretty consistent.

SJW:   43:27
Get it done as well. When he needs to welcoming Demonstrate, he doesn't look like he flaps. I mean, we talked a bit about Ron last week. It is outrageous decisions to play. Yeah,

sBF:   43:40
I did enjoy that. You're talking about trying to get a 265 for hanging. Lie in a bun.

SJW:   43:46
Eyes carry. Just

THM:   43:48
What was that? John? I don't think that's a good idea,

SJW:   43:52
John. This doesn't seem like the place I'm going to play. She's not lost. Memories. 250 accident, bunker shot, hanging, lie, flee above ball. He's gotta hock it right to left round trees over there, well below the feet. And he had a three shot leader. Speaks cheap like he was, so it was like his tell, usually at the time he just played his way out the tournament and then, because he's carrying, said to him, just fill out the play to May. Then that was his caddy, smiled, and he's like you put Diamond. You shouldn't have said that

THM:   44:27
Come on, pick. Let's go, Rory. Line in the sand. He's gonna do it. I'm

sBF:   44:33
not sure. I think Tiger actually could do it again. Back to back means changed. Yeah, he's changed a couple of things in his swing this year and from the few golf instructors awful on Instagram. Quite well, well regarded, They all seem to say, really positive changes, making looks like he's gonna be able to manage the salt back or health issues a little bit better with these changes. And you look at Torrey Pines. That's of course, that just does not set well for him when it's 7700 yards. Pretty long. When you played it in January, gotta hit driver every T and it's not, you know, it's not wide open by any stretch, and he's placed Top 10 in his first event back. I think there's some good signs,

THM:   45:12
so just like his golf swings, Bruce has taken ages to do

SJW:   45:17
that. I think it's gonna be exciting 2020 years and I think I think it's looking good. There's lots, there's there's still stuff to run before we get into the Masters and into major stay. Come on stay put for your picking Already. Sad elation. Poor pic is it is. So where are we? We looked last week. We had Fino coming down the stretch. Didn't happen for him. You both

sBF:   45:38
said he was gonna probably get it gone only once. In a

THM:   45:40
way, I can always go back and edit that part. Just say that we picked web. We do not

SJW:   45:48
come with a disingenuous somethingto listens. But you know, the guys playing great golf. So

THM:   45:54
we've got to finish the programme and then we're ready for next week.

SJW:   45:57
Riviera Next week. Tigers event Genesis. Yeah. Good to see

sBF:   46:03
you. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I've heard great things about l. A.

THM:   46:10
And we're back, uh, for the WGC, then in in Mexico. Remember? 20th

sBF:   46:16
Mexico? That'd be a big one. Making a

SJW:   46:18
call. Yeah. You've heard it all about Wolf. We're talking about a tour, and that's what the game too, Right? So you guys have a good week

sBF:   46:27
Tear up this weekend on the course.

THM:   46:30
We'll see you next time you

sBF:   46:32
watch this
