And but I love to"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":184.65,"endTime":189.18,"body":"read as a kid, we went to the"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":189.18,"endTime":193.08,"body":"Delaware County Public Library,"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":189.18,"endTime":193.08,"body":"I would check out as many books"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":193.08,"endTime":196.08,"body":"as I possibly could. And most of"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":193.08,"endTime":196.08,"body":"those books tended to be on"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":196.08,"endTime":199.47,"body":"World War Two history. And as"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":196.08,"endTime":199.47,"body":"you know, most of the generals"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":199.47,"endTime":202.68,"body":"in world war two were from the"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":199.47,"endTime":202.68,"body":"army, and most of them had"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":202.68,"endTime":206.4,"body":"attended West Point. And so I"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":202.68,"endTime":206.4,"body":"you know, fell in love with"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":206.4,"endTime":210.09,"body":"Eisenhower and patent and"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":206.4,"endTime":210.09,"body":"Bradley, and all those guys. And"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":210.09,"endTime":213.9,"body":"so I in the the love for"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":210.09,"endTime":213.9,"body":"military history continued as I"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":213.93,"endTime":217.2,"body":"as I got older. And when it came"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":213.93,"endTime":217.2,"body":"time to apply to colleges, I"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":217.2,"endTime":221.43,"body":"applied to West Point I got in"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":217.2,"endTime":221.43,"body":"early. And at that point time, I"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":221.43,"endTime":225.42,"body":"decided, I'm going to go to West"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":221.43,"endTime":225.42,"body":"Point, and I'm going to try try"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":225.42,"endTime":229.41,"body":"the army. I lead"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":270.12,"endTime":274.56,"body":"platoons companies, battalions"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":274.56,"endTime":277.92,"body":"and then eventually a brigade a"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":274.56,"endTime":277.92,"body":"platoon is about 40 people a"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":277.92,"endTime":282.48,"body":"company's about 120 battalion"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":277.92,"endTime":282.48,"body":"about 670 and a brigade is about"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":282.48,"endTime":286.29,"body":"was about 3000 soldiers"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":282.48,"endTime":286.29,"body":"throughout that time and"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":286.32,"endTime":289.77,"body":"reflecting on it. There's two"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":286.32,"endTime":289.77,"body":"sort of simple things that I"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":289.77,"endTime":293.67,"body":"take away from the army that"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":289.77,"endTime":293.67,"body":"continue to to influence me even"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":293.67,"endTime":296.61,"body":"today and then went a little bit"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":293.67,"endTime":296.61,"body":"more complex. The first one is"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":296.61,"endTime":299.91,"body":"organization. You know, the army"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":296.61,"endTime":299.91,"body":"is sort of an organizational"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":300.0,"endTime":303.69,"body":"type of group every night, I"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":300.0,"endTime":303.69,"body":"still get out my little notebook"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":303.69,"endTime":307.83,"body":"and write down my list of things"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":303.69,"endTime":307.83,"body":"to do. For the next day, I'm"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":307.83,"endTime":310.95,"body":"sure you carried around the"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":307.83,"endTime":310.95,"body":"green notebooks I carried around"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":310.95,"endTime":313.83,"body":"the green notebooks in the RV."},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":310.95,"endTime":313.83,"body":"I've transitioned to mole skins"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":313.83,"endTime":317.91,"body":"now in my post army life, but"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":313.83,"endTime":317.91,"body":"the the organization was the big"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":317.91,"endTime":321.99,"body":"thing that I took away from the"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":317.91,"endTime":321.99,"body":"second thing was the importance"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":321.99,"endTime":326.04,"body":"of daily physical fitness that"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":321.99,"endTime":326.04,"body":"still influences me today. I got"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":326.04,"endTime":328.98,"body":"up this morning and rode my bike"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":326.04,"endTime":328.98,"body":"with a couple of friends that"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":328.98,"endTime":332.19,"body":"influenced at the army had"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":328.98,"endTime":332.19,"body":"really had a big impact on me."},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":332.28,"endTime":335.22,"body":"The third one which is a little"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":332.28,"endTime":335.22,"body":"bit more complex, is the idea of"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":335.22,"endTime":338.76,"body":"overcoming adversity. And"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":335.22,"endTime":338.76,"body":"throughout the 24 years in the"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":338.76,"endTime":342.3,"body":"Army, I did numerous things from"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":338.76,"endTime":342.3,"body":"learning how to parachute from"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":342.3,"endTime":347.19,"body":"1000 feet, and in dealing with"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":342.3,"endTime":347.19,"body":"my my fears, they're making it"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":347.19,"endTime":350.73,"body":"through Ranger School and"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":347.19,"endTime":350.73,"body":"overcoming the adversity of the"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":350.73,"endTime":355.5,"body":"North Georgia mountains in the"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":350.73,"endTime":355.5,"body":"swamps in Florida. And then"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":355.53,"endTime":358.89,"body":"while I was out during the,"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":355.53,"endTime":358.89,"body":"during my army career, I"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":358.89,"endTime":363.21,"body":"deployed to Kosovo, which was a"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":358.89,"endTime":363.21,"body":"war torn country, right after"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":363.48,"endTime":367.77,"body":"bombing campaign, and help to"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":363.48,"endTime":367.77,"body":"try to put that country back"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":367.77,"endTime":371.64,"body":"together. I then went to Bosnia,"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":367.77,"endTime":371.64,"body":"and it's a peacekeeping and"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":371.64,"endTime":375.54,"body":"hunting for some war criminals,"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":371.64,"endTime":375.54,"body":"and learned how that you have to"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":375.54,"endTime":378.78,"body":"take a longer, longer term"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":375.54,"endTime":378.78,"body":"approach to doing doing that. I"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":378.78,"endTime":383.25,"body":"did three deployments to Iraq, I"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":378.78,"endTime":383.25,"body":"did the invasion of Iraq, and"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":383.25,"endTime":386.28,"body":"then went back twice, twice more"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":383.25,"endTime":386.28,"body":"for more counterinsurgency"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":386.28,"endTime":389.91,"body":"operations. And then I led a"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":386.28,"endTime":389.91,"body":"battalion in Afghanistan for"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":389.91,"endTime":392.37,"body":"over a year doing"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":389.91,"endTime":392.37,"body":"counterinsurgency operations"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":392.37,"endTime":396.39,"body":"down in southeast Afghanistan."},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":392.37,"endTime":396.39,"body":"Each of those sort of long term"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":397.2,"endTime":402.45,"body":"challenges taught me how both"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":397.2,"endTime":402.45,"body":"myself in organizations overcome"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":402.45,"endTime":405.66,"body":"adversity and reach long term"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":402.45,"endTime":405.66,"body":"goals. We'll talk more about"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":405.66,"endTime":408.99,"body":"that as we get into grit. But"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":405.66,"endTime":408.99,"body":"that was the third big takeaway"},{"speaker":"David Fivecoat","startTime":408.99,"endTime":410.61,"body":"that I took away from the army."},{"speaker":"Stephen McLain","startTime":411.15,"endTime":413.49,"body":"Awesome.
