Equating a war with the debate over the best way to teach children to read seems a bit excessive, but a quick glance over the blogs spewing nastiness about the thought-leaders on each side of the debate seems to give rise and credence to the name, "Reading Wars."

On one side is whole-language or balanced literacy, an offshoot of whole language. On the other side is the Science of Reading.
