00:00:50
..
00:00:51
..
00:00:54
You know, John.
00:00:55
The diesel engines have seemed to be coming on popular more and more lately, really starting to see some motor sports events for diesel vehicles.
00:01:07
Drag racing mean people of making diesel trucks and diesel powered anything fast nowadays.
00:01:14
Oh yeah, it's incredible.
00:01:15
That amount of horsepower that and and not only that, horsepower and torque, it's incredible numbers.
00:01:17
Horsepower, torque.
00:01:20
Yeah, and of course.
00:01:22
Truck pulls was was better in a trouble than a diesel engine.
00:01:26
Yes, you know, in my opinion, right today we've got Ron Knock.
00:01:30
Who is the President of the National Association of Diesel Motor Sports with us?
00:01:35
How you doing today, Ron?
00:01:37
Pretty good.
00:01:37
How are you guys doing doing well?
00:01:38
That dude went.
00:01:42
Diesel motor sports.
00:01:43
I mean, that's really becoming popular anymore.
00:01:47
We've been doing this for 14 years, so.
00:01:51
It's gone through.
00:01:53
At least three changes in the marketplace, and you know, we have fun with it every year.
00:01:59
A lot of young people you know originally this fork started out with middle aged guys.
00:02:07
And we started the. They wondered how can we get the the young people started 'cause this was back in early 2000.
00:02:16
And, uh, I said, well, I tell you what our events are on Saturday most of the time it tracks.
00:02:22
Let's go to show up on Friday nights.
00:02:27
And a lot of.
00:02:27
The young kids were were doing the.
00:02:30
The Sport Compact and and everything and so here you have these big 4 wheel drive pickups pull up to the starting line against these little sport compacts and my guys would of course just blow him away and end up up, you know a full truck link the at the end at the end in front of them and they pull back.
00:02:51
Around there, like how do you?
00:02:52
Do that to a truck.
00:02:56
Well, I have to tell you now, 14 years later, we're at about 70% young market 18 to 30.
00:03:06
Oh, that's great.
00:03:08
Well, you you guys do.
00:03:09
To promote drag racing and and truck pulls and even truck shows right?
00:03:15
Truck shows, you know we have a lot of guys that put a lot of money into these.
00:03:22
And even a lot of you know rat rods and different kinds of custom builds fabrication.
00:03:31
Uh, with the diesel and it's pretty amazing what these guys have done on some of these older vehicles. You know, they'll take an old 49 Ford pickup and and even put a Caterpillar diesel engine in it and dual wheels and big exhaust and a beer keg for a gas. You know. Fuel tank.
00:03:51
Uh, you know, they just build these up like like crazy and it's pretty interesting to see what we have show up at the shows.
00:04:00
And then we also have dyno competitions.
00:04:04
The the one coming up next weekend.
00:04:07
We have one that's called King.
00:04:09
Of the hill.
00:04:10
And these guys compete on the dyno.
00:04:14
Wow, what kind of power are those guys putting out?
00:04:16
Well, generally it's anywhere from lab and honored horse all the way up to almost 2000 Morse.
00:04:26
That's that's a lot.
00:04:26
Of power, yeah, that's that's moving that I, I know I saw, I don't know if it was at your event, but the the black Dodge truck that was trying for some big numbers and and he blew the top of the motor off that was something was all over social media about about a month ago.
00:04:43
No, that was not our event.
00:04:44
But yeah, you know our Dino.
00:04:46
I don't allow him to do some of the things some of those other events do like come blowing nitrous straight into the turbo and.
00:04:53
Oh wow.
00:04:54
You know, I don't want a motor blowing up and throwing Pistons into the crowd that runs.
00:04:58
Right, right?
00:05:00
Yeah, a dangerous thing, yeah.
00:05:00
That's one of the things I saw was that piston was still smoking and somebody, and he picked it up like it was.
00:05:03
Yeah, the guy picked it up.
00:05:06
A foul ball, yeah?
00:05:07
That's pretty dangerous, and as you know, in motor sports, if we have an accident happen, it hurts all of us.
00:05:13
Yeah, right, right?
00:05:13
Yes, insurance wise sponsor wise.
00:05:18
Uh, that's not a good thing to have parts flying into the.
00:05:22
Crowd no, no, not at all.
00:05:22
That's definitely not a.
00:05:24
Good thing though.
00:05:25
Generally, where are your events held at?
00:05:27
We do a lot in rural areas because face it.
00:05:32
That's where the customer is at.
00:05:34
I mean diesel pickups and pickups in general.
00:05:39
Are in rural areas.
00:05:41
They use them for work.
00:05:42
They use them for construction for farming, for hauling trailers.
00:05:48
That's where everything is going to going to go is in the rural areas, and you know anymore of the cities.
00:05:57
You don't need a a vehicle hardly anymore so.
00:06:00
Right, yeah, I know you guys are in the Kansas City area is most of your stuff in the Midwest.
00:06:06
No, not really.
00:06:08
We're all over the country.
00:06:09
Our first event this year was in southern Florida.
00:06:12
OK wow.
00:06:14
And then the second one was Indiana. This one our next one's in Pennsylvania. Then we're going to Memphis, TN.
00:06:23
And then back here to Kansas City.
00:06:25
And then we're going back to Indiana.
00:06:27
So we we've held them in all over the country we've held.
00:06:32
Utah Texas Nevada California.
00:06:37
There's big interest everywhere, then, right?
00:06:40
South Dakota, Nebraska, but mostly in the in the farm belts?
00:06:46
Because that's where pickups are used, right right?
00:06:50
I mean rural.
00:06:51
Communities they there are small towns.
00:06:53
They have to drive between towns to get to their jobs.
00:06:56
Yes, I know you talked about getting getting the younger generation involved with with diesel motor sports.
00:07:04
That's a lot of what we're our real deal and what we're promoting constantly on our podcast.
00:07:11
What are you guys actively doing to get other?
00:07:14
The younger folks involved?
00:07:15
You know, in these rural communities, many of them do come from farms and small towns.
00:07:21
And they learn to drive at 15 years old, they have to get to a job.
00:07:26
Or even to school.
00:07:28
I mean, a lot of these small towns don't even have their own schools anymore.
00:07:32
They gotta drive to the next town to get to school so you know, the youth market is getting into the.
00:07:40
In rural areas, driving early just like we went through and you know, in big cities I've heard of kids that are graduating from high school that don't even have a driver's license.
00:07:53
Well, yeah.
00:07:55
So it's a different.
00:07:58
That's where our market is.
00:07:59
Is the real market these kids?
00:08:02
Get grandpas pick up or their dads pick up uh find out for you know it's still if you look at the cost of what it takes to up the horsepower of a of a diesel pickup, it's pretty reasonable.
00:08:16
I mean you could spend.
00:08:18
3 to $4000 and double the horsepower.
00:08:21
That's pretty good bang for the buck, yeah?
00:08:22
That is, that's that's a lot.
00:08:24
It seems better than a gasoline engine, yeah?
00:08:26
Well, try to do that on a sport compact.
00:08:29
Right, no, that's not going to happen.
00:08:29
That's not going to.
00:08:30
Have sex.
00:08:33
So that's the reason these kids like it and come on.
00:08:36
What's more American than a big 4 wheel drive pickup?
00:08:42
That is, that is exactly right 'cause I've seen a lot of diesel conversions on formerly gasoline powered.
00:08:48
You know, Mustangs and muscle cars and things like that just for the shock factor.
00:08:53
Have you seen that with people and at your events or and and and are you a quote, unquote diesel powered event?
00:08:56
Oh yeah.
00:09:02
No matter what, it's what it's in.
00:09:05
Uh, yes.
00:09:06
OK.
00:09:07
If they show up with a a BMW or the diesel in it, sure.
00:09:10
I'll let him.
00:09:11
Race OK yeah that was my that was my biggest question is if it's has to be diesel powered obviously, but no matter what it sends.
00:09:20
It doesn't matter what it did, just a few years ago.
00:09:22
At one event we had a, uh, you know, one of those old 80 diesel Mercedes show up wow this thing was it was dog ugly.
00:09:30
Well you all.
00:09:31
I remember those.
00:09:34
You know that?
00:09:35
Green metallic?
00:09:37
Yeah it was, it was.
00:09:40
Slow as molasses, but it was in a.
00:09:42
ET bracket right.
00:09:44
You know, and it was going down this neat, slow.
00:09:47
You know it's convenient and.
00:09:50
You know people.
00:09:50
Watched and laughed at it all day.
00:09:53
Come time to write checks.
00:09:55
When I went up to the winner circle I said well what's that thing doing up here?
00:10:00
My race director goes that whole thing almost won the race, but he redlighted on the final.
00:10:05
Oh wow.
00:10:08
Well, how sometimes slow and steady wins the race slow and steady wins the race.
00:10:10
It's all about this, great.
00:10:13
Yeah, I've I've driven a a non turbo early 80s diesel mercy.
00:10:13
So it's great.
00:10:17
80s, you know the light turns green and you're halfway out, and it turns yellow.
00:10:24
That was the one.
00:10:25
Yes, that was the one in fact.
00:10:27
His his wife almost wouldn't let him take the check for the winnings.
00:10:31
'cause she says that's more than what he paid for.
00:10:34
It so my.
00:10:34
Ha ha ha.
00:10:38
So you know we have lots of fun with it.
00:10:41
We actually have a, uh, a young man in New Jersey that.
00:10:47
Put a Duramax in a.
00:10:50
69 Chevelle
00:10:52
Oh yeah.
00:10:54
And he'll be at next weekend's event. And it's a killer vehicle. I mean, it's very sharp looking, but it's got a diesel engine.
00:11:03
Yeah, do you find a lot more aftermarket companies are starting to get on board with doing stand alone diesel conversions for cars.
00:11:10
Yes, there is a wiring harness.
00:11:13
Is changeovers turbos?
00:11:18
Has a lot to do with the motor.
00:11:20
I mean obviously you cannot take a stock motor.
00:11:23
That's rated for 300 horse and up it to 1000 and keep the internal parts the same.
00:11:29
Oh understood, right?
00:11:31
They blow off.
00:11:33
I would see that.
00:11:35
You know it's like any gas race motor two.
00:11:38
I mean, if you don't build it from the ground up for stability.
00:11:41
Right, yeah, the basics still still stay the same, right?
00:11:45
Yeah, rotating parts come apart when you get lots of horsepower and torque.
00:11:46
Right?
00:11:51
You know that's the way it is, it's it's still automotive racing because even on the newer trucks, I mean they're they're pretty hefty. I mean, you know 500 doors.
00:12:02
Coming off the line.
00:12:04
So, but still you can do things to them that that doesn't void the warranty.
00:12:10
It keeps it still EPA compliant.
00:12:13
Small things bottle up the horsepower on them and you know most my guy gets by newer diesel pickups to haul the race vehicles there.
00:12:23
And for comfort.
00:12:26
Because obviously the newer vehicles, they're not your mom and dad.
00:12:30
Diesel pickup, absolutely not.
00:12:32
No, definitely not.
00:12:33
I mean, they ride like a Cadillac.
00:12:38
I mean they.
00:12:38
Have all the electronics and nice cities.
00:12:41
Of a full blown nice car.
00:12:43
Right, right exactly and they and they ride good.
00:12:46
Loaded or unloaded and and they're trying to make they're they're trying to make everything a little bit more friendly for everyone.
00:12:54
Yeah, and you know these guys they aren't going to avoid any warranty on a new vehicle mainly because they cost too much, right?
00:13:00
Exactly exactly what do you think is the most popular diesel either to modify or conversion?
00:13:08
It's going to be.
00:13:11
Historically, for older trucks, the Commons.
00:13:14
OK.
00:13:15
Which is the dodge right?
00:13:18
And if it.
00:13:20
It's still pretty consistent, but an old standby is a Cummins motor you can change.
00:13:28
Probably about.
00:13:31
Up to 38% more power.
00:13:34
Before you have to start changing internal parts.
00:13:38
Where Duramax is like 23%.
00:13:42
And a Ford is 12%.
00:13:45
I see.
00:13:46
You'll see a lot more Ford.
00:13:47
Pickups obviously, because that's the number one selling pickup.
00:13:52
But to change those vehicles it takes a lot more internal parts earlier.
00:13:57
If you want power out of it.
00:14:00
Yeah, like I.
00:14:01
I see a lot more like the rat rods and and and swaps of the of the 12 valve.
00:14:06
You know, Cummins, I see that quite a lot.
00:14:08
Yeah, it seems to be the the power plant of choice from what I've seen, right?
00:14:13
Well, the old 12 Allen I have one.
00:14:15
Yeah, that's my vehicle of favor and I drive it because it's the old mechanicals.
00:14:23
They're nonelectronic, right?
00:14:25
Right?
00:14:28
And they'll burn anything I mean.
00:14:30
Right exactly and I think that's why people use them as standalone ends for swaps and stuff, 'cause you can get the thing to fire and it'll fire in anything.
00:14:37
Yeah, yeah, I mean you could.
00:14:39
You could pour vinegar and alcohol in it and it it probably run.
00:14:43
Right, right so so Ron?
00:14:46
I guess that'll lead me into a question.
00:14:48
How did you get into diesel vehicles?
00:14:51
Well, I tell you what I.
00:14:52
Was an old.
00:14:53
Gas marketing automotive guy for years and I got a call in early 2000. I forget which year, three or four.
00:15:04
And I was from a young fellow in Indiana and he says, hey, Sema told me, you're the guy for truck marketing in the Midwest.
00:15:11
And I said, well, thank you, but but maybe and I said, what are you doing?
00:15:17
And he says, well, we're starting up a new diesel competition series and we'd like to have you come and tell us.
00:15:24
What we're doing wrong or right or whatever we're doing so this young man's name was Eric McBride and he'd started the diesel Hot Rod Association.
00:15:33
OK, and that was one of the original.
00:15:37
Diesel only events and the reason this was done was at the time.
00:15:43
None of the drag racing tracks would allow.
00:15:46
Pick ups on the track at all.
00:15:51
Yeah at all.
00:15:53
They just said you're not coming on this track.
00:15:56
And some of them are still kind.
00:15:58
Of that way today.
00:16:00
Yes they are.
00:16:00
But what was the reasoning for that?
00:16:04
Oh, they you know it's just the the trucks are higher.
00:16:07
The four wheel drive the tires they just feel it's not uh, a racing vehicle.
00:16:13
OK.
00:16:15
And it tears up the track, and you know, there's all kinds of reasons.
00:16:19
I got you.
00:16:23
You know there this guy said, well, I'm going to start this and then he said a lot of the fairgrounds at the time would not let diesel pickups compete in the tractor pulls.
00:16:34
So yeah, interesting and guess what?
00:16:37
Now they all want him to join, you know I.
00:16:40
Yeah, I bet.
00:16:42
So back then they would not let him compete.
00:16:46
So this young man and my.
00:16:48
Current partner
00:16:49
Jean moni.
00:16:51
Uh, started this group.
00:16:54
And they had me come.
00:16:55
Their event was down in Houston at the Houston International Raceway down there.
00:16:59
Right?
00:17:00
Someone down there and it was you did.
00:17:02
They had slud bowling they had dyno competition.
00:17:06
They had truck racing.
00:17:08
I mean.
00:17:09
And, uh, you know the trucks back then were not.
00:17:12
As powerful as they are today.
00:17:15
What we thought was.
00:17:16
High powered trucks back then, or street trucks today.
00:17:20
Yeah 5 to 600 board horse was was pretty powerful back then.
00:17:26
So, uh, yeah, I went down there and they had a huge crowd and they go.
00:17:32
So what are we doing wrong?
00:17:34
And I said, well, OK, you're you're insured.
00:17:37
You have safety rules.
00:17:39
That's good.
00:17:41
Uh, you're doing everything right.
00:17:43
You have technicians, uh.
00:17:46
I said there's only one thing I see you're missing tonight.
00:17:49
They said, what's that and I?
00:17:50
Said well, you?
00:17:50
Get 5000 pickups in the parking lot.
00:17:55
And no one selling them anything.
00:17:58
And they go, Oh yeah, do you?
00:17:59
Think companies would be interested.
00:18:01
Well, that's fine.
00:18:03
You think you could market this to sell stuff to people?
00:18:06
Me, you see?
00:18:08
All at the time I was marketing for about three of the companies that would. Yeah they would. They would divide it the bit to find 5000 pickups in one location. You know, wow.
00:18:18
Yes, definitely.
00:18:20
So I said, yeah, I think I could probably hook you up.
00:18:23
Ha ha ha.
00:18:26
So for a couple of years I helped them and then they got into some partnership.
00:18:26
Let's that sounds good.
00:18:31
Uh, financial issues and they disbanded and that's when we started Nadm National Association and diesel motor sports.
00:18:41
And for sake of the English language, we shortened it to diesel motor sports about 12 years ago.
00:18:50
And we've been doing it ever since, and the people asked all the time.
00:18:57
You know why do you keep on doing it and I'm.
00:18:59
Like you know it's.
00:19:01
It's gone to the rural communities and young kids.
00:19:05
I mean these kids are fun.
00:19:07
I mean, you know, it reminds me of the old muscle car days.
00:19:10
Right?
00:19:12
Taking a vehicle.
00:19:13
Working on themselves.
00:19:15
And even though you know some of.
00:19:18
These kids take the bead up rusted out truck.
00:19:22
They're proud of it, you know, and I'll I'll spend time with them and go, yeah?
00:19:24
For sure.
00:19:27
What do you do?
00:19:27
To it, you know.
00:19:29
Right?
00:19:29
As much as a guy that bought a $80,000 truck and put 40,000.
00:19:33
Into it, you know.
00:19:34
Yeah, I mean, that's that's what it's about. Is I mean that's what hot rodding's always been about is right?
00:19:39
Doing what you can with with what you have right and making the best.
00:19:42
Of it exactly, lack of funding always creates innovation, right?
00:19:47
They get very creative and you know if you think back in the early 60s.
00:19:52
Uh, when when they came out with fuel injection?
00:19:55
For racing
00:19:57
You know, all my guys laughed and went?
00:20:00
Oh wow, fuel injection.
00:20:02
Yeah, what is that?
00:20:03
No one will ever afford that well, what's on every vehicle now, yeah?
00:20:08
Yes, yeah.
00:20:09
Fuel injection, that's exactly right.
00:20:12
Well, that's what's going to happen with our young diesel crowd.
00:20:14
They've already made huge.
00:20:17
Progressive steps.
00:20:20
And I think what some of our shops that are producing now are going to produce.
00:20:27
Technology for the industry.
00:20:31
For the OEM's and even though the OEM's don't want to recognize it because it's changing their vehicles.
00:20:33
Yeah, yeah.
00:20:39
Uh, yeah, I'm sure some of that's gonna be on their vehicles in the near future.
00:20:44
They they definitely have their eye on innovation.
00:20:47
It doesn't matter where it comes from, right?
00:20:50
Yeah, it it really doesn't matter at all.
00:20:52
You you show a GM or Ford or Chrysler designer or something or.
00:20:59
They're certainly going to either publicly or secret.
00:21:03
Steal the idea and modify it themselves, or just steal the idea right?
00:21:08
Yes they will.
00:21:08
Yeah, they're they're paying attention one way or.
00:21:10
Another, they are very much paying attention, no different than when all the auto manufacturers were sneaking out to Woodward Ave and paying attention to all the street racers that were modifying factory vehicle.
00:21:23
So you know they can.
00:21:25
They can diss these young kids all they want but.
00:21:29
Come on, they grew up in a better time and and smarter time than what we did.
00:21:33
They're all computerized.
00:21:35
Uh, they're mechanical inclined, and I I tell you what they can solve a lot of.
00:21:42
Things pretty quickly.
00:21:43
And they have a computer sitting on the seat of the truck as it's going down the track.
00:21:49
Uh, in the next time they go down they can make adjustments.
00:21:54
Yeah, it's amazing to see these kids compete.
00:21:58
And do businesses like you said they're starting to say, well, why can't I build some of this and then sell it right?
00:22:07
Right?
00:22:09
And that's what they're.
00:22:09
They could make a career out of this, right?
00:22:10
Doing yeah make.
00:22:11
A career out of it and and see where they can go with it and do something they love.
00:22:15
Sure, well in the future, where do you see diesel motor sports headed?
00:22:20
Uh, I see it still being two divisions.
00:22:24
You know it started out there was only.
00:22:27
Two or three really hot.
00:22:29
Diesel vehicles that broke records and.
00:22:32
Because it takes, I mean phase it.
00:22:33
It takes a lot of money.
00:22:36
To build a.
00:22:36
Hot truck, well, there's more and more now because shops are building their own trucks to help advertise their shops, and they're getting a lot of parts donated to them by a lot of the manufacturers because they want their name on their popular trucks.
00:22:53
They're getting fast and there's so there's a fast division, and then there's still the street division trucks.
00:23:01
The guys that want a.
00:23:03
Tough fast truck driving for everyday use.
00:23:07
So all these everyday use guys, they're.
00:23:11
You know they're they.
00:23:13
They realize it changed about a year ago.
00:23:15
First it.
00:23:16
Was give me the biggest.
00:23:18
Turbo give me the hottest injectors.
00:23:22
But they were blowing things up about every three months, you know?
00:23:26
And that gets expensive.
00:23:28
Very expensive.
00:23:30
I mean, you know if the stage 3 transmission on some of these high horsepower, even uh St trucks close.
00:23:35
To $10,000.
00:23:36
Oh wow.
00:23:38
Yeah, so if you replace a couple of loads a year.
00:23:39
Handles a lot of power.
00:23:42
Yeah, exactly exactly, and because I don't know because I don't follow diesel as closely as maybe some of our listeners do.
00:23:50
Uhm, explain the differences between your if there are any clear lines between a street type vehicle and a race type vehicle.
00:23:59
Oh, I'm yeah there there is huge differences.
00:24:01
OK.
00:24:02
You know, uh?
00:24:03
Street big vehicle still has to follow Deoti.
00:24:07
OK.
00:24:08
And and get inspected.
00:24:11
So it's like a regular truck now.
00:24:15
Anytime you take an OEM vehicle.
00:24:18
And up the horsepower.
00:24:22
You have to not just strengthen the motor, you gotta strengthen everything.
00:24:27
I mean the cooling system, the brakes, the suspension.
00:24:33
I mean, the first thing that that goes on these is the suspension, because everybody knows the added weight for a diesel engines quite a bit on it.
00:24:42
On a suspension front end and that's the first thing that wears out on these trucks is a front end.
00:24:44
Right?
00:24:49
So there is.
00:24:50
Quite a few companies now that build heavier.
00:24:54
Ball joints heavier suspension tie rods.
00:25:01
Because I've seen them actually at the track when they take off.
00:25:05
I mean they can actually raise the end of the vehicle and then when it sets back down.
00:25:11
The wheels, the tie rod ends this snap.
00:25:13
Oh wow, wow.
00:25:15
And the wheels go.
00:25:18
I don't think that's a good idea.
00:25:20
That's not a good thing.
00:25:22
So you know they have to.
00:25:25
They have to strengthen the rest of the pickup to be a street pickup with high horsepower.
00:25:30
Right?
00:25:31
But what most people don't understand is these are all tuneable vehicles, and if you're out regular working on a vehicle, I mean you're not going to run at high horsepower.
00:25:44
Driving down the road, you want the best mileage you can get.
00:25:48
So they're going to have it where it's getting 2022 miles to the gallon, all on a trailer.
00:25:57
And try doing that with the gas pickup.
00:26:00
Yeah, not going to happen no.
00:26:02
You're gonna be about.
00:26:03
8-9 miles a gallon, right?
00:26:05
Yes, yeah that happens.
00:26:07
That happens very quickly, yeah?
00:26:09
So you know these guys are.
00:26:12
They're turned on turning these things up out on the street.
00:26:15
They're trying to get the best mileage and and of course, when you get the best mileage, it's adding more air to the combustion.
00:26:24
It's not adding fuel, it's adding more air, right?
00:26:27
And adjusting the injector in the turbo so it'll burn that combustion.
00:26:33
What are what are the high high horsepower numbers for a streetable pickup?
00:26:40
Oh, these guys will easily run.
00:26:43
You know 800 to 1000 horse.
00:26:46
OK.
00:26:47
Well, what kind of times are those vehicles turning at the track?
00:26:53
Oh, on 1/4 mile they'll easily do 11 twelves.
00:26:58
That's pretty quick for a for a big old truck.
00:27:01
Yeah 7000 pound 4 wheel drive truck.
00:27:04
Yeah, it's not.
00:27:04
Too not too shabby since our old muscle cars barely did that rush.
00:27:06
Not too shabby.
00:27:08
Right, right?
00:27:10
Is that what you guys normally runs quarter mile?
00:27:13
No, it changes depending on the track and the the higher speed guys like to go 8th of a mile which over 10 years ago.
00:27:14
OK.
00:27:16
I got you.
00:27:22
Of course my old racing experience said gas.
00:27:26
I said hey, why don't we go to an eighth of a mile and they all went on a we want to go quarter well.
00:27:33
They got faster and faster.
00:27:34
They soon found out the reason I suggested a full mile is because it's less breakage.
00:27:40
Right?
00:27:42
Yeah, 'cause there's even though I mean the diesel doesn't like high RPM.
00:27:48
It doesn't like it, but what kills it?
00:27:52
Is the torque?
00:27:53
OK.
00:27:55
The torque is different hot, much different than a gas vehicle, obviously.
00:28:02
And it's converting that torque and horsepower.
00:28:06
To the wheels.
00:28:08
That's a huge issue with the diesels because of the torque.
00:28:12
It snaps everything.
00:28:14
I would I would guess all you joints and and and all the drive components and anything rotating is.
00:28:21
Easily broken.
00:28:23
Well, to give me an idea.
00:28:25
I saw a guy with.
00:28:26
A triple turbo Duramax sheared the bolts off its torque converter.
00:28:32
Wow, wow.
00:28:35
I don't know that I've ever seen a gas vehicle.
00:28:37
Do that.
00:28:38
I've never seen a gas vehicle do.
00:28:39
That I've seen it pitch the torque converter out of the transmission, but I've never seen it pitch the bolts.
00:28:42
Sure, yeah.
00:28:46
Shear the bolts off it.
00:28:48
That's a lot of torque, yes, Sir.
00:28:49
Have a lot of torque, so that's always been an issue, and that's the reason.
00:28:55
A lot of the newer, faster diesels have ditched the pickup completely.
00:29:03
It's tube frame and fiberglass body, so in other words.
00:29:06
I see.
00:29:07
It's a, it's a pro mod traction, right?
00:29:11
Yeah it may have.
00:29:13
A solid truck frame, but everything else on it is no firewall tube frame, fiberglass body.
00:29:19
Purpose built vehicle.
00:29:21
Purpose built vehicle and we're talking to, you know, a couple of 100,000.
00:29:25
Well, what kind of times were those trucks running?
00:29:29
Write down an 8 mile summer in the force.
00:29:33
My word I asked.
00:29:35
Fives, but I've got full sized pickups that are in an eighth mile hit and six is pretty easy.
00:29:41
Right?
00:29:43
So upper fives.
00:29:46
In a regular full size pickup.
00:29:49
Right?
00:29:50
As as a as like a real doorslammer.
00:29:54
Yeah wow.
00:29:55
Yeah, that's that's impressive.
00:29:57
That is some big numbers.
00:29:59
And some of them, even though even though they trailer him in.
00:30:03
Yes, there's still license.
00:30:05
Right?
00:30:05
Uh, because of the leftover, but you know who wants to?
00:30:09
Drive a again.
00:30:11
When you set these things up for racing or pulling, you're not gonna want it on the street.
00:30:17
You know the suspensions tighter.
00:30:19
I mean it rides like.
00:30:20
A lumber wagon.
00:30:21
Right, right?
00:30:22
And it's especially a pulling truck.
00:30:24
I mean, they're blocked solid suspensions.
00:30:28
Uh, if you rode in a pulling truck in jar, your teeth loosened 30.
00:30:33
Feet, I mean, right right?
00:30:37
They're pretty rough writing, and so when people go, oh look at my phone wouldn't be good for the street.
00:30:43
I'm like are you kidding me?
00:30:45
Trailered in guys it's right.
00:30:48
Right?
00:30:48
I challenge you to even get in that thing and drive it down the street, I mean.
00:30:51
Right, right, right.
00:30:53
Nope, but they're using it for the purpose that they built it for, though, so.
00:30:56
Right exactly yeah is.
00:30:58
Is there any one vehicle that's ever competed in your in your show?
00:31:04
That has done every event that has been a polar and has been a drag racer or anything like that.
00:31:12
Some of them try to do it, it's just a different animal.
00:31:15
It's a different animal if you're going to be.
00:31:17
Successful I mean.
00:31:17
Oh no, and I.
00:31:18
Completely understand that I'm just seeing if some someone out there decided that hey, I'm going to try and do all of these.
00:31:20
Free troxel
00:31:25
And there is tough truck competitions where they do that.
00:31:29
They have to.
00:31:30
Change the the engine and the drivetrain overnight to compete, which is to me, that's yeah, that's it's not the same truck when you do all that right?
00:31:42
Right, right?
00:31:43
It's it's totally different animal.
00:31:45
I know we're talking about horsepower and torque and everything for drag racing.
00:31:48
Where's our numbers and stuff for?
00:31:52
It's about the same.
00:31:53
I mean the.
00:31:55
The difference in polling is you're competing on a clay dirt track.
00:32:02
300 feet.
00:32:05
And the sled has a.
00:32:08
A weight box that starts back at the back so you're starting at about 5 to 8000 pound tongue weight.
00:32:17
For the start of the pole.
00:32:20
But by the time you get to the end of the.
00:32:22
300 feet.
00:32:24
I mean sometimes it's upward 25 to 50,000 pounds.
00:32:30
Tommy Lee
00:32:30
Time went out.
00:32:30
Wait when that wait box.
00:32:32
Hits the end.
00:32:33
Yeah, they generally stopped.
00:32:35
I'm I bet yeah.
00:32:37
Wow, and then they just dig a hole.
00:32:39
You know they dig a hole in the dirt.
00:32:44
It's a it's.
00:32:45
A lot of power, immediate power, and sled pulling.
00:32:50
And a lot of torque so.
00:32:52
And I see a lot of the sled pull trucks have multiple engines on them and and is that common with diesel?
00:32:58
And not as much.
00:33:00
I mean, there's a few that that do that, but again, those are very expensive vehicles to have, so the common guys are generally one engine and and they are trailered in.
00:33:05
Right, right, sure.
00:33:12
Again, these vehicles are not street worthy.
00:33:15
I mean, they're strictly built for competition.
00:33:17
Right?
00:33:19
They're not.
00:33:21
They're not street trucks at all.
00:33:23
I mean, we do have a couple of St classes called work stock, which is now purely stock turbos.
00:33:32
Now they can do other things to it.
00:33:33
You know, air intake tires.
00:33:37
Right?
00:33:38
Uh, tuning stuff like that, but you know it's, it's gotta have the original stock turbo in it.
00:33:45
I see.
00:33:46
And you know, generally, a farm truck will pull 5 to 20,000 pounds.
00:33:52
Every day.
00:33:54
So you know, it's fun to watch them take the farm trucks and see what they can do, and that gets them started into the sport and then for the higher end St trucks which go upwards to 1200 horse, we have a hot work stock.
00:34:08
And it's got.
00:34:08
To be a a licensed vehicle.
00:34:12
And uh, yeah.
00:34:14
Those things are pretty high horsepower and and uh.
00:34:18
They're fun to watch too.
00:34:20
Yeah, I'm I'm glad to hear that you have different levels of competition that nothing is just a supergiant, and that's all you get.
00:34:29
You have entry level type stuff, stock or stock appearing, stock type stuff and and that gives the.
00:34:37
People with less deep pockets, the ability to be involved with your event.
00:34:42
Well, that's how we get.
00:34:42
Him booked. I mean it's.
00:34:44
Look at when we.
00:34:45
Were kids and then it was.
00:34:46
In the muscle car deal you started.
00:34:48
Out with a.
00:34:49
Beat up car and added different things to it and pretty soon you got to where you wanted.
00:34:55
The high end vehicle, right?
00:34:57
Bigger, bigger, badder, better always takes over.
00:35:00
Well that's that's funny with these guys.
00:35:02
You know they'll they'll buy a truck and I'll use.
00:35:06
Truck and they'll go.
00:35:08
Wow, I'm in.
00:35:09
I'm going to put a bigger turbo.
00:35:11
Well, OK, uh.
00:35:14
You know $3000 later you got a bigger turbo wall with a bigger turbo. It's like, well, I'm not seeing much.
00:35:21
Well, if you put a bigger turbo, you need bigger air intake.
00:35:26
Well then you need hotter injectors.
00:35:29
Yeah, it's it isn't it does.
00:35:30
It all snowballs.
00:35:32
It's a domino effect and it just it all snowballs crazy.
00:35:36
That means it just sounds like hot riding, period.
00:35:38
Yeah, highlighting in general.
00:35:38
I mean, that's that's just the way it's always been.
00:35:40
You know, it's just a different different Ave.
00:35:42
Well, it's always been yeah.
00:35:43
Yeah, it's hot riding with no spark plugs, right?
00:35:47
Oh oh, by the way, you had it all that well.
00:35:49
Now you need a hotter fuel pump, you know.
00:35:51
Of course, yeah, that is exactly correct.
00:35:53
And then and then you start breaking transmissions or drivetrain or something.
00:35:58
Or yes, you'll always you build horsepower.
00:36:01
You're going to find your next weakest link, and you upgrade that, and then it's the next weakest link.
00:36:06
I mean, that's just.
00:36:08
It's just the way it's always been, always, always will.
00:36:10
Be it's $70,000 set of hubcaps.
00:36:12
Yeah, because you you put.
00:36:14
Those on the truck and then you change the tires and then you change the lift and then you change the engine.
00:36:19
Then you look back and you say man shouldn't.
00:36:21
Have got those hubcaps.
00:36:22
Yeah with the.
00:36:22
They keep like keep.
00:36:23
What's it?
00:36:26
I just jacked up the radiator cap and I built.
00:36:28
A whole truck under it.
00:36:29
Yeah, that's exactly how it starts.
00:36:32
And of course you know the whole time I'm like, Oh yeah, my sponsors love this.
00:36:36
You know, yeah.
00:36:38
More parts, more parts.
00:36:41
So old.
00:36:42
And you know when people say, well, you know what do you do and I go.
00:36:46
Well if you think about it, I.
