Show Notes

Welcome back to season 2!
In the season 2 trailer, we announced that we will be adding a new addition by featuring people who are established in the field of STEM.  To kick things off my guest today is Prof Salome Maswime. She's a qualified clinical scientist who specializes in obstetrics and gynaecology.  Currently, she is the head of Global Surgery at the University of Cape Town South Africa. In this episode, we learn that as a child Prof Salome grew up in an academic family. She had the dream of attaining a PhD even after deciding on a career in medicine. She certainly fulfilled this dream as she went on to get a masters and PhD degrees after qualifying as a clinician and talks us through her journey. Prof Salome's main research interests are in global surgery, specifically related to caesarean sections and placental causes of stillbirths. She tells us more about this work and why it is so important. Furthermore, we discuss how her time as a practising clinician. Now as her role as a Professor of Global Surgery at the University of Cape Town where she teaches and supervise postgrad students she tells us about the transition into the academic working space. Lastly, we touch on what more needs to be done to create opportunities for young people to access role models and mentors such as herself.
