00:03:56.560 --> 00:03:59.520 And this morning I want to talk about a reset. 00:03:59.919 --> 00:04:11.759 And I'm not gonna talk about the great reset where uh the WEF and Klaus Schwab said that by 2030 you will own nothing, but you will still be happy. 00:04:11.919 --> 00:04:18.160 There's some good news waiting for you six years from now, and you won't own anything, but you'll be happy. 00:04:18.399 --> 00:04:27.600 I'm talking about the Pentecost reset, and this was the point of transition from the old covenant to the new covenant. 00:04:27.759 --> 00:04:39.040 And a very exciting passage, but yet a very complicated passage in one way or another, because there's a lot of things here uh that that will need some explanation. 00:04:39.199 --> 00:04:55.360 So this morning I'm gonna go through the passage that that Web read, and that is Acts chapter 2, and I'm not gonna reread that because we've done that, but I'm gonna show you this morning five features of the Pentecost reset. 00:04:55.759 --> 00:04:59.040 Five features of the Pentecost reset. 00:04:59.279 --> 00:05:02.480 Can I get some slide movement here? 00:06:09.439 --> 00:06:12.800 The day is Pentecost. 00:06:12.959 --> 00:06:14.399 Look at verse 1 there. 00:06:14.800 --> 00:06:18.480 Acts chapter 2, verse 1, the day of the reset. 00:06:19.199 --> 00:06:25.759 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 00:06:25.920 --> 00:06:31.360 These are the apostles, 12 of them gathering in the upper room. 00:06:31.600 --> 00:06:40.319 That very same upper room, it very likely was the upper room where Jesus celebrated the Passover with his disciples. 00:06:40.480 --> 00:06:43.439 Now, Pentecost is an Old Testament feast. 00:06:43.680 --> 00:06:55.920 In fact, we read about it, for example, Leviticus 23, 16, and it says, there you shall count 50 days to the day after the seventh Sabbath. 00:06:56.480 --> 00:07:00.639 Then you shall present a new grain offering. 00:07:02.079 --> 00:07:13.199 And so as we think about the day of the Pentecost, it it was fifty days between Passover and Pentecost. 00:07:13.360 --> 00:07:21.279 And according to Arnold Frichtenbaum, he says Pentecosts celebrated God's faithfulness looking back. 00:07:22.079 --> 00:07:29.279 But also it was a feast looking forward of the promise of more things to come. 00:07:30.160 --> 00:07:37.040 It was a feast of first fruit, a feast of ingathering. 00:07:38.319 --> 00:07:42.639 It also celebrated God's covenant with Israel. 00:07:43.519 --> 00:07:52.639 And so, no doubt, Pentecost was one of those feasts that brought into remembrance God's covenant faithfulness. 00:07:52.800 --> 00:07:59.199 And as I was studying this passage, I was thinking, why don't we talk and think more covenant? 00:07:59.439 --> 00:08:01.120 I've been in ministry for many years. 00:08:01.279 --> 00:08:05.920 I can't remember when last I preached a sermon on covenant. 00:08:06.240 --> 00:08:08.639 Covenant is a big thing. 00:08:09.199 --> 00:08:26.480 And so one of these feasts, actually, all the feasts of Israel, brought to remembrance God's faithfulness, and these feasts were connected with the agricultural calendar and usually had to do with the harvest of a crop. 00:08:26.639 --> 00:08:33.039 But nevertheless, if we look here in this passage, Luke uses specific words. 00:08:33.200 --> 00:08:42.000 In your translation, it might read, and my translation, it may read as follows when the day of Pentecost had come. 00:08:42.879 --> 00:08:46.480 Now in the Greek, that word had come is not there. 00:08:46.879 --> 00:08:49.440 The word there is fulfillment. 00:08:49.840 --> 00:08:54.480 Luke is very specific, and it's one of his favorite idioms. 00:08:55.200 --> 00:09:00.080 The word fulfill or being filled. 00:09:02.480 --> 00:09:11.840 And this word here is specifically tailored to show the theological and prophetical fulfillment happening at this point. 00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:15.200 Number one, the theological fulfillment. 00:09:15.440 --> 00:09:18.159 Let's think of the theological fulfillment. 00:09:18.399 --> 00:09:20.960 Who fulfilled the Passover? 00:09:22.240 --> 00:09:24.480 The answer is Jesus. 00:09:24.799 --> 00:09:25.120 Okay? 00:09:26.720 --> 00:09:35.360 Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament feast of Passover because he himself would be what? 00:09:35.919 --> 00:09:40.639 The Passover lamb slain from the beginning of the world. 00:09:40.960 --> 00:09:48.559 He was slain as a sacrificial lamb and therefore perfectly fulfilled the Passover. 00:09:49.200 --> 00:09:57.279 Any celebration of the Passover today is saying basically, Jesus, you were not good enough. 00:09:57.440 --> 00:09:58.559 We need more lambs. 00:09:58.720 --> 00:10:06.639 And he was the once-for-all perfect sacrifice slain for your and my sins. 00:10:07.360 --> 00:10:10.480 And so Christ's death completely fulfilled the Passover. 00:10:10.559 --> 00:10:19.200 But there's another thing about his blood sacrificed for us on the cross, and that is the covenantal aspects of his blood. 00:10:19.440 --> 00:10:26.639 Hebrews 9.18 says that the first covenant was inaugurated with blood. 00:10:26.879 --> 00:10:28.399 Hebrews 9.18. 00:10:28.960 --> 00:10:34.799 For a covenant to be inaugurated, there was to be a blood sacrifice. 00:10:35.039 --> 00:10:44.000 And so Jesus, his blood, was poured out to inaugurate a new covenant. 00:10:44.879 --> 00:10:50.879 You can turn to Luke 22, 20, and I'll show you something there. 00:10:53.840 --> 00:11:00.320 And we will celebrate communion a little later this morning. 00:11:03.840 --> 00:11:13.279 But there's something to be said of that Passover meal, looking forward to what's going to happen at Pentecost. 00:11:13.519 --> 00:11:15.519 Luke 22, 20. 00:11:16.639 --> 00:11:31.360 And Jesus in the same way took the cup after they had eaten, saying, This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. 00:11:33.600 --> 00:11:39.440 Before a covenant can be inaugurated, there has to be blood. 00:11:40.080 --> 00:11:43.759 The old covenant was the blood of a lamb. 00:11:44.240 --> 00:11:49.759 The new covenant was the blood of a perfect lamb, Jesus Christ. 00:11:49.919 --> 00:12:08.080 But there's a prophetical fulfillment here too, because while Jesus instituted a new covenant at Passover, he paid the blood sacrifice, the price for that covenant to come into effect. 00:12:08.320 --> 00:12:14.559 That covenant would not come into effect until Pentecost, 50 days later. 00:12:15.360 --> 00:12:26.320 And if we think about Pentecost and the prophetical things happening at this point, our mind in Acts 2 needs to go back to Jeremiah 31, 31. 00:12:30.240 --> 00:12:35.279 Where God the prophet Jeremiah talks about a new covenant. 00:12:35.440 --> 00:12:44.080 Jeremiah 31, 31 says, Behold, days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant. 00:12:45.039 --> 00:12:50.159 The prophets spoke about a time of a new covenant. 00:12:51.440 --> 00:12:58.559 And if we, as we go through this, we got to think about some of the dynamics of this new covenant. 00:12:58.639 --> 00:13:01.759 There's a whole new set of dynamics. 00:13:01.840 --> 00:13:07.360 Now, a lot of people erroneously think that the old covenant was a covenant of works. 00:13:07.519 --> 00:13:09.919 You had to work to earn your salvation. 00:13:10.080 --> 00:13:10.960 That is wrong. 00:13:11.279 --> 00:13:16.480 Salvation has always been by grace alone, through faith alone. 00:13:17.440 --> 00:13:20.000 The new covenant is no different. 00:13:20.480 --> 00:13:30.159 But what is different with the new covenant is its dynamics, especially as it pertains to the work of the Holy Spirit. 00:13:30.240 --> 00:13:32.000 And I'm going to show you that. 00:13:50.559 --> 00:14:01.919 Ezekiel 36, 27 reads, I will put my spirit where? 00:14:03.440 --> 00:14:04.480 Within you. 00:14:05.840 --> 00:14:11.120 In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit did not permanently indwell people. 00:14:11.759 --> 00:14:16.159 People had the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit. 00:14:16.320 --> 00:14:20.399 It was a non-permanent abiding presence. 00:14:20.559 --> 00:14:25.120 That's why David prays and he says, Do not take your spirit away from me. 00:14:25.679 --> 00:14:29.919 Well, you could pray that because he was in the old covenant. 00:14:30.799 --> 00:14:38.960 But we as new covenant believers have this not presence of the Holy Spirit, but the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. 00:14:39.120 --> 00:14:46.080 So there was a definite day in time when people were indwelt with the Holy Spirit. 00:14:46.320 --> 00:14:52.720 And Ezekiel 36, 27 prophesied about a day that this will happen. 00:14:52.879 --> 00:15:04.399 But there's a new dynamic in the new covenant community, which now includes you and me. 00:15:05.600 --> 00:15:07.519 It includes you and me. 00:15:09.440 --> 00:15:16.559 The old covenants would, the old covenant singular, would exclude you and me. 00:15:16.960 --> 00:15:17.600 Why? 00:15:19.360 --> 00:15:20.559 We're not Jews. 00:15:20.720 --> 00:15:22.080 We're not Israelites. 00:15:22.320 --> 00:15:23.600 Maybe some of you might. 00:15:23.919 --> 00:15:24.399 I don't know. 00:15:24.480 --> 00:15:28.480 I'm not, I would not have been included in the old covenant. 00:15:28.799 --> 00:15:38.879 But Joel 2.28 makes this prophetical announcement that there will come a day that God will pour out his spirit on what? 00:15:40.000 --> 00:15:41.600 All humanity. 00:15:42.399 --> 00:15:48.799 And I don't know about your definition of the word all, but when the Bible says all, it means all. 00:15:49.759 --> 00:15:50.080 Okay. 00:15:51.120 --> 00:16:05.759 And so this new covenant has two new dynamics: the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and number two, the international nature of the covenant community. 00:16:05.919 --> 00:16:11.519 No longer is it an Israel-only or exclusively to Jews covenant. 00:16:11.759 --> 00:16:22.639 The new covenant incorporates all nations into this divine spiritual blessing of salvation and indwelling of the Holy Spirit. 00:16:22.720 --> 00:16:26.720 And so Pentecost would mark the starting point. 00:16:26.799 --> 00:16:33.919 It was a reset in which the old covenant went out and the new covenant came in. 00:16:34.080 --> 00:16:36.559 And Pentecost was your day. 00:16:50.320 --> 00:16:57.200 And then on April 27th, 1994, it was the new South Africa. 00:16:57.360 --> 00:17:11.200 And I woke up that very next morning with a new president, a new cabinet, a new form of government, a new flag, a new national anthem, a new constitution. 00:17:12.880 --> 00:17:17.759 New street names, new city names, new, new, new, new. 00:17:18.319 --> 00:17:20.240 You think that wasn't jarring?
