00:01:40.400 Well, 28 is my favorite part of this, but before we get to that, church tradition states that some apostles appointed a man by the name of Polycarp to be pastor of the church in ancient Smyrna, a city that is now part of Ismir, Turkey. 00:01:42.159 --> 00:01:56.879 Probably over 90 years old, perhaps close to a hundred, Polycarp was arrested by Roman authorities and brought before a tribunal to be charged for being a Christian. 00:01:58.560 --> 00:02:04.640 If you don't know the story of Polycarp, I encourage you to find it and read it in its entirety. 00:02:05.040 --> 00:02:18.400 But because he was an old man, the Roman proconsul sought out some way to be gracious and merciful to this old man standing before him. 00:02:18.639 --> 00:02:24.400 Gave him multiple opportunities to renounce his faith, to turn away from Christ. 00:02:26.240 --> 00:02:34.400 Finally, the proconsul encouraged Polycarp to swear allegiance to Caesar rather than to Christ. 00:02:36.080 --> 00:02:49.599 And in a statement that is now famous in church history, Polycarp responded, Eighty and six years I have served him, and he has never done me wrong. 00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:54.319 How then can I blaspheme my king and savior? 00:02:56.159 --> 00:03:03.360 I think Polycarp could have sung with us all that God ordains is right. 00:03:05.360 --> 00:03:10.080 They were going to tie him to the post before they burned him alive. 00:03:11.120 --> 00:03:13.439 But Polycarp said no. 00:03:14.319 --> 00:03:18.879 He stood of his own free will in the flames until he was consumed. 00:03:21.520 --> 00:03:36.719 Polycarp was burned alive as a display, as he displayed the kind of faithfulness to God that his predecessor, the Apostle Paul, displayed in his own life. 00:03:37.039 --> 00:03:52.159 We see that expressed here in Acts chapter 20, especially in the middle portion that we studied last week, where in verse 19 he served the Lord with all humility and with tears and trials that came upon him from the plots of the Jews. 00:03:52.240 --> 00:04:07.039 He didn't shrink from declaring anything, no matter where he went, no matter what community he was chased out of, no matter how long he was in prison, no matter how many lashes he received, Paul was faithful to Christ. 00:04:08.639 --> 00:04:15.280 Approximately 50 years later, Polycarp displayed the same kind of faithfulness. 00:04:15.759 --> 00:04:38.959 In the final segment of Acts chapter 20, here beginning in verse 28, the Apostle Paul passes on this challenge of faithfulness, particularly to the elders of the church in Ephesus, and then by extension to the church in Ephesus, and then by extension beyond that to the entire church, the rest of church history. 00:04:39.519 --> 00:04:52.959 So as the gospel of God's grace inspired Paul's life, and as it inspired Polycarp's life, God's grace must also guide faithful leaders and churches. 00:04:53.040 --> 00:05:02.240 And I think we see three characteristics of faithful churches and faithful church leaders in this last segment of Acts chapter 20. 00:05:02.800 --> 00:05:06.160 The first of those is really found in verse 28. 00:05:06.319 --> 00:05:09.600 Many of these can all be encapsulated in verse 28 alone. 00:05:09.839 --> 00:05:22.480 But we're going to walk through this and highlight three characteristics of faithful churches and church leaders from these final words of the Apostle Paul. 00:05:22.720 --> 00:05:33.759 So we see that when a church is faithful to the word of God's grace, it exists in humble submission to God. requires the knowledge that the church is his. 00:07:19.439 --> 00:07:27.120 Possession of the church and any local church, whether it's universal or local, rests in the one who obtained it. 00:07:28.399 --> 00:07:30.480 We see this all throughout the New Testament, don't we? 00:07:30.639 --> 00:07:36.720 In John chapter 21, verse 15 or 16, Jesus said, We are his sheep. 00:07:37.439 --> 00:07:41.680 Earlier in the Gospel of John, he said, all of his sheep hear his voice. 00:07:42.240 --> 00:07:48.720 Throughout the New Testament, the church at Corinth and other churches, they are called the church of God. 00:07:51.199 --> 00:07:53.519 The church belongs to him. 00:07:53.759 --> 00:08:07.839 That's why in 1 Timothy 3, verse 5, young Timothy, probably as he's pastoring the church in ancient Ephesus, was told that elders are to care for the church of God. 00:08:09.439 --> 00:08:17.759 Humble submission to God requires the specific knowledge that it belongs to him. 00:08:57.360 But in another sense, it means that we need to be more diligent because he has called his people together in local assemblies across the world to pursue him and his kingdom work together. 00:08:57.679 --> 00:09:12.639 That requires many different people coming together in the unity of heart, mind, and soul that can only come by first grasping that this assembly is his, not ours. when we take one, two, three, four hundred individual preferences and we bring them all into a single assembly, that preference begins to rub up against other preferences, and pretty soon it's no, But the church universal is made up of people from all nations, all groups, all languages that are naturally going to have different backgrounds and different preferences. 00:12:05.440 --> 00:12:11.279 Now, local churches can be assemblies of people who gather around a preference. 00:12:12.480 --> 00:12:17.759 Some churches have an evangelistic or an outreach preference. 00:12:18.240 --> 00:12:21.200 Some have a worship style preference. 00:12:22.240 --> 00:12:26.399 Some gather around holding to a creed. 00:12:26.559 --> 00:12:30.960 And a creed is something like a doctrinal statement. 00:12:31.279 --> 00:12:35.759 Creeds can sometimes shift between preferences and convictions. 00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:40.639 Sometimes they can serve more like a doctrinal statement than a mere preference. 00:12:41.120 --> 00:12:50.240 But we also have local churches that gather around doctrinal convictions and choose to leave the preferences in the background as much as possible. 00:12:50.399 --> 00:12:55.039 And some churches form out of preference to a particular leader. 00:12:56.240 --> 00:13:12.159 Here we find the Apostle Paul subtly instructing the Ephesian elders that what they think, what they feel, what they desire, what they prefer must be subject to the word of God's grace. 00:13:12.799 --> 00:13:14.960 That must be the attitude. 00:13:16.000 --> 00:13:26.000 Forming a church around my preferences is not an acceptable attitude because the church belongs to whom? 00:13:27.279 --> 00:13:30.080 God, not me. 00:13:31.039 --> 00:13:36.639 And that means it's his preferences that rule, not mine. 00:13:38.240 --> 00:13:41.279 Preferences are one of those really sticky things, aren't they? 00:13:41.679 --> 00:13:44.399 Let me just kind of take a rabbit trail here for a minute. 00:13:44.639 --> 00:13:51.039 I want you to see how easy it is for us to take a step towards preferences. 00:13:53.039 --> 00:13:57.519 Maybe I've not stirred the pot very much yet, so let's start that process. 00:13:59.039 --> 00:14:17.600 The Evangelical Free Church, the which we are a part, has historically been an association of churches that unites on the essentials of the faith and allows a measure of love and graciousness regarding non-essential aspects of the faith. 00:14:17.919 --> 00:14:39.120 So each church, then, each church that associates with the evangelical free church is bound by the agreed upon essentials of the faith and is free to determine for itself what non-essentials are vital for them. 00:14:42.000 --> 00:14:49.279 Now, do you see how that takes a small step towards elevating their preferences? 00:14:50.720 --> 00:14:51.759 Maybe you don't. 00:14:53.279 --> 00:14:57.600 Imagine some concentric circles, a bullseye, right? 00:14:58.080 --> 00:15:01.519 Center of the bullseye, then you've got a circle around it and a circle around it. 00:15:04.399 --> 00:15:08.799 In the middle, the bullseye, we have the essentials of the faith. 00:15:08.960 --> 00:15:16.000 So for argument's sake, let's put the Evangelical Free Church of America statement of faith right at the center of the bullseye. 00:15:19.679 --> 00:15:26.720 These are, as best we can discern, the non-negotiables of the faith. 00:15:27.039 --> 00:15:33.440 Things like the person of Christ, the doctrine of Scripture, those kinds of things. 00:15:33.679 --> 00:15:41.759 Scripture is clear about them, and to be a member church of this association, a church must agree with those essentials. 00:15:42.159 --> 00:15:47.279 Now, outside of that center are significant non-essentials. 00:15:49.759 --> 00:15:53.440 Let's say we put another controversial one there: baptism. 00:15:55.360 --> 00:16:00.799 Baptism is not a part of the Evangelical Free Church of America doctrinal statement. 00:16:01.120 --> 00:16:06.799 But most would assert that it is a substantial part of faith in Christ. 00:16:07.200 --> 00:16:09.120 It's a biblical teaching. 00:16:10.159 --> 00:16:16.720 Jesus said in the Great Commission, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them. 00:16:16.799 --> 00:16:18.639 So it's a significant part. 00:16:19.519 --> 00:16:24.159 But some churches view it as more essential than others. 00:16:24.559 --> 00:16:32.159 Some require it as membership in a local church, some require it even to be able to serve in vacation Bible school. 00:16:33.120 --> 00:16:39.279 But our association, the EFCA, collectively says that's in this outer circle. 00:16:39.360 --> 00:16:42.559 It's not one of the essentials, it's one of the non-essentials. 00:16:44.559 --> 00:17:01.360 Now, a non-essential is a doctrine or a truth that's expressed or implied by Scripture that doesn't rise to the level of importance or significance in that association doctrinal statement. 00:17:01.440 --> 00:17:08.559 So the EFCA says that the place of baptism is not an essential, it's in this next ring perhaps. 00:17:09.440 --> 00:17:32.960 So the place of baptism in any local church, whatever place it serves, whatever function it has in the local church, whatever mode of baptism is preferred, is a church-by-church determination, which means they say it's your preference. 00:17:34.799 --> 00:17:43.279 It's not one of the core things, but a church in our association, as long as they agree to the core thing, they the place of those non-essentials is in part defined by our application of biblical truth to the Christian life and how the church functions. 00:18:07.680 --> 00:18:16.480 Nearly every evangelical church would say that baptism is an integral part of the Christian life and it's a central part of church functioning. 00:18:17.119 --> 00:18:27.839 But not every church would apply the scriptures in the same way and say, oh no, yeah, you have to be baptized to be a member, or you have to be baptized to serve, or you have to be baptized in this way. 00:18:29.279 --> 00:18:39.920 Because it rests God became flesh. 00:21:21.039 --> 00:21:23.599 God took on flesh and dwelt among us. 00:21:24.400 --> 00:21:47.920 Therefore, as Hebrews chapter 9, verse 12 says, because Jesus, the God, eternal God, became man in time and place, he could then enter once for all into the holy places, not by means of blood of goats and calves, but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. 00:21:48.240 --> 00:21:59.839 So the writer to the Hebrews emphasized that it was Jesus' blood, it was his own blood, but that it accomplished what only a divine being could accomplish, an eternal 00:25:16.319 The New Testament uses three primary terms for this group of church leaders: elders, overseers, and another is shepherd. 00:25:16.480 --> 00:25:25.119 So shepherd refers to the work, the function that the elders play in the local church. 00:25:25.440 --> 00:25:33.680 Elder is, if it has any particular meaning, it's it kind of speaks to maturity in both age and spirituality. term doesn't help us understand what oversight means. 00:25:47.440 --> 00:25:50.400 I'm going to give you a new word to plug into your brain. 00:25:50.720 --> 00:25:54.559 Oversight means guardian. 00:25:55.519 --> 00:25:57.680 Overseer means guardian. 00:25:57.839 --> 00:26:07.599 It's a term of responsibility and authority that we find reflected in the concept, modern concept, of the word guardian. 00:26:07.839 --> 00:26:15.599 Because a guardian possesses the responsibility and the authority to oversee another. 00:26:16.319 --> 00:26:19.359 They guard what's been given to them. 00:26:20.319 --> 00:26:28.880 We might say they supervise in the sense of a supervisor who administers someone or something. 00:26:29.200 --> 00:26:37.359 This is why Titus chapter 1, verse 7, calls overseers stewards of God's house. 00:26:38.079 --> 00:26:44.880 They take what's been entrusted to them and they steward it, they direct it, they use it, they guide it, they oversee it. 00:26:45.440 --> 00:26:49.200 So these elders oversee the church in Ephesus. 00:26:50.000 --> 00:26:56.720 Every faithful local church has this group of men who function as overseers of God's flock. 00:26:56.880 --> 00:27:00.079 Maybe there's a small number, maybe there's a larger number. 00:27:00.480 --> 00:27:08.720 They guard the doctrine of the church, they administer its functioning, and they ensure that
