00:02:45.759 --> 00:02:51.599 Yahweh of hosts, he is the King of Glory. 00:02:52.800 --> 00:02:53.439 Amen. 00:02:54.719 --> 00:02:58.400 Access to God is a key theme in the Bible. 00:02:58.800 --> 00:03:11.599 For example, the Bible begins with an account of access to God, in which God creates Adam and Eve, and he places them in a garden, and that's a place where they can walk and talk with God. 00:03:12.639 --> 00:03:21.599 But when they sinned, they were expelled from the garden and forever denied access to God's presence in the garden. 00:03:22.960 --> 00:03:37.680 Later in biblical history, God's presence was symbolized by the Ark of the Covenant, a golden box with cherubs facing each other on it, and God's presence was in between those cherubs. 00:03:38.159 --> 00:03:43.439 That Ark of the Covenant was kept hidden behind curtains in the tabernacle. 00:03:43.840 --> 00:03:49.759 And access to God's presence there at that Ark of the Covenant was limited. 00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:57.280 You needed certain credentials, we might say, in our world today, to get closer to God's presence. 00:03:58.319 --> 00:04:08.080 Much later in biblical history, King David wanted to bring that Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, to David's royal city. 00:04:08.639 --> 00:04:10.960 And you might recall that story. 00:04:11.360 --> 00:04:23.040 The guardians of the ark placed that golden box on a cart to be pulled by oxen up the hills to the city of Jerusalem. 00:04:23.279 --> 00:04:25.759 At one point on the journey, they hit a bump. 00:04:26.160 --> 00:04:33.199 The box was jostled, and a man reached out to put his hand on the box to steady it, to make sure that it wouldn't fall over. 00:04:34.800 --> 00:04:37.279 And God killed him instantly. 00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:48.959 God's instructions for moving the ark emphasized carrying that golden box on poles, not moving it on a cart. 00:04:49.680 --> 00:04:56.959 Because of that, moving the Ark of the Covenant on the cart was an act of disobedience to God's law. 00:04:57.199 --> 00:05:12.240 But that doesn't really matter because the ark represented God's pure and holy presence, just like in the Garden of Eden, so no one is holy enough to touch the box, no matter how it is being carried. 00:05:13.519 --> 00:05:18.160 But that event frightened King David. 00:05:19.680 --> 00:05:27.600 How could it ever be safe to keep God's presence in his royal city? 00:05:29.120 --> 00:05:37.920 Later, David ordered the Levites to carefully carry the Ark of the Covenant on the poles to Jerusalem. 00:05:38.240 --> 00:05:41.600 You can read about that in 2 Samuel chapter 6. 00:05:42.240 --> 00:05:45.199 And that day was a day like today. 00:05:45.439 --> 00:05:47.839 It was a day of great celebration. 00:05:48.000 --> 00:05:55.199 It was a procession of worship, music, dancing, shouting, massive celebration. 00:05:56.240 --> 00:06:03.040 And that day seems to be the historical context of this song in Psalm 24. 00:06:05.040 --> 00:06:14.079 But as we saw on Friday with Psalm 17, David's words sometimes go beyond his own life and his own circumstances. 00:06:14.319 --> 00:06:25.600 Sometimes the Spirit of God prompted him to write words that reflected his personal situation, but that also looked forward to a greater fulfillment. 00:06:26.079 --> 00:06:29.600 Psalm 24 is one of those Psalms. 00:06:41.519 --> 00:06:56.480 No, the King of glory is ultimately the risen and ascended Lord Jesus Christ, who on Easter morning walked out of a borrowed tomb and 40 days later went through the gates of the perfect royal city. 00:06:58.000 --> 00:07:11.439 As we did on Friday evening in Psalm 17, I want to explore three sections of this song, examining them both in their original context and their ultimate fulfillment in Christ's resurrection and ascension. 00:07:11.920 --> 00:07:19.279 As we do that, verses 1 and 2 are the first section or the first verse, the first movement, you might say, of the song. 00:07:19.439 --> 00:07:24.000 And they simply proclaim that the earth belongs to Yahweh. 00:07:25.040 --> 00:07:35.279 It opens with this declaration: the earth is Yahweh's, and the fullness of it, the world, and everyone who lives in it. 00:07:36.560 --> 00:07:40.959 As Yahweh, a name, a word that means he's the living one. 00:07:41.199 --> 00:07:42.240 He always is. 00:07:42.480 --> 00:07:46.480 He is the sovereign, glorious creator of all of it. 00:07:47.680 --> 00:07:52.800 Everything belongs to him because he made it. 00:07:53.920 --> 00:07:56.319 That's what verse 2 reminds us. 00:07:57.360 --> 00:08:01.439 It is his because, for he founded it. 00:08:02.639 --> 00:08:05.199 He founded it on the seas and upon the rivers. 00:08:05.279 --> 00:08:12.639 And that might seem like strange imagery to us in our modern world, but this echoes the mythology of the ancient world. 00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:22.720 The mythology of the ancient world said that there were rival gods who competed to rule the seas and the rivers. 00:08:24.800 --> 00:08:31.759 But Psalm 24 cuts through all of that by declaring those ancient imaginations myths. 00:08:32.720 --> 00:08:36.879 Psalm 24 counters that mythology with a stronger argument. 00:08:37.120 --> 00:08:46.559 The earth and everything in it belong to Yahweh, not because he won some battle of the gods, but because he made it. 00:08:47.200 --> 00:08:50.879 It belongs to him because he made it all. 00:09:07.120 --> 00:09:20.320 Now, this kind of beginning to this song matters because it declares the nature of the King of Glory before we ever meet him at the gates of the royal city. 00:09:20.960 --> 00:09:24.399 He is not a regional God. 00:09:25.120 --> 00:09:29.759 He's not some sort of tribal God who holds a small piece of territory. 00:09:30.399 --> 00:09:33.759 He's not one God among a pantheon of gods. 00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:47.120 He is the maker and the owner of all things, the fullness of the earth, the mountains and the seas, the deserts and the plains, the creatures and all of its people, its history and its future. 00:09:47.279 --> 00:09:50.960 It all belongs to him because he made it. 00:10:05.200 --> 00:10:07.519 Easter begins at creation. 00:10:09.840 --> 00:10:18.000 The resurrection of Jesus Christ is not an isolated miracle standing all by itself, disconnected from everything else. 00:10:18.879 --> 00:10:29.279 The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the creator of all things, re-entering his own creation in triumph over the death that now rules it. 00:10:31.440 --> 00:10:46.240 The hands that formed the world from nothing, the fingers that held the stars in space and filled it with life are the same hands that bore the print of the nails in his hands on resurrection morning. 00:10:48.480 --> 00:10:55.279 The one who owns it all is the one who defeated the death within it. 00:10:57.360 --> 00:11:01.120 Easter is an extension of the creation event. 00:11:02.960 --> 00:11:13.759 It's the creator of all things, the owner of it all, reclaiming what is his beginning with the grave. 00:11:15.120 --> 00:11:18.159 And one day extending to it all. 00:11:20.639 --> 00:11:30.720 The second unit then begins in verse three with a question Who can go near God? 00:11:51.919 --> 00:11:56.320 You need to imagine this as Jerusalem sitting on the mountains of Judea. 00:11:56.399 --> 00:12:01.679 And so to go to Jerusalem is to go up, to ascend the hill. 00:12:03.120 --> 00:12:06.399 So who will go up the hill that belongs to Yahweh? 00:12:06.480 --> 00:12:08.399 Who will stand in his place? 00:12:09.840 --> 00:12:19.200 This is the mountain where the Ark of the Covenant would come to rest and where the temple would one day be built, the place where God's presence would dwell among his people. 00:12:19.759 --> 00:12:23.120 To ascend that hill was to draw near to God. 00:12:25.200 --> 00:12:32.000 And now the psalmist asks, Who has the right to do that? 00:15:11.360 --> 00:15:13.840 Who can ascend the hill of Yahweh? 00:15:14.080 --> 00:15:17.279 Who can stand in his dangerously holy place? 00:15:17.679 --> 00:15:19.279 We have a problem. 00:15:19.919 --> 00:15:28.960 If no one is clean, if no one is pure, if no one is innocent, but those are still the requirements to come before a holy God. 00:15:32.159 --> 00:15:40.480 Friday evening, we stood at the cross with the only man who could pray Psalm 17 without reservation. 00:15:42.799 --> 00:15:59.679 This morning, we stand before an empty tomb, remembering the only man who can ascend the hill of Yahweh, having perfectly fulfilled all the requirements needed to stand in God's holy presence. 00:16:01.600 --> 00:16:03.919 Jesus had clean hands. 00:16:04.399 --> 00:16:07.919 He was examined by Pilate, who found no guilt in him. 00:16:08.559 --> 00:16:13.759 He was tried and convicted by the Sanhedrin only because of false testimony. 00:16:14.159 --> 00:16:16.159 Herod found nothing. 00:16:16.559 --> 00:16:27.919 In fact, Jesus was the only one of whom God the Father said at both his baptism and his transfiguration, This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased. 00:16:30.080 --> 00:16:35.759 Jesus is the only one who could meet all of God's requirements. 00:16:37.120 --> 00:16:41.279 And he met them without exception. 00:16:42.799 --> 00:16:46.399 That's why his resurrection wasn't optional. 00:16:47.519 --> 00:16:49.120 You ever thought about that? 00:16:49.600 --> 00:16:51.200 It wasn't optional. 00:16:51.440 --> 00:16:57.360 The empty tomb was not meant to be some kind of surprise ending to a story. 00:16:57.919 --> 00:17:05.839 It was the necessary verdict of God the Father on the life and death of his only begotten Son. 00:17:06.559 --> 00:17:18.880 The resurrection is God's declaration that Jesus' hands were clean, that his heart was pure, that he is the one who has the right to ascend the hill of Yahweh. 00:17:22.640 --> 00:17:29.680 The New Testament interestingly reveals an even more astonishing aspect of resurrection morning. 00:17:32.319 --> 00:17:35.200 And of his ascension 40 days later. 00:17:35.920 --> 00:17:42.559 The astonishing aspect is that Jesus did not rise from the dead and go through the gates of heaven alone. 00:17:45.839 --> 00:17:47.359 He didn't go alone. 00:17:47.839 --> 00:17:56.000 Because the apostle Paul writes in Ephesians chapter 2 that we who were dead in our trespasses and sins were made alive together with Christ. 00:17:56.559 --> 00:17:59.440 And we were raised together with Christ. 00:17:59.680 --> 00:18:03.680 And we were seated together with Christ in the heavenly places. 00:18:04.079 --> 00:18:22.799 Through faith in the resurrected Christ, we who were by our very nature unclean, impure, giving our souls to false worship, are made alive with Christ, raised up with Christ, and seated with him in the heavenly places. 00:18:22.960 --> 00:18:31.119 Friends, the only one who had the right to ascend to God's presence brought with him those who had no right. 00:18:33.839 --> 00:18:44.799 And he brought them dirty hands and impure hearts, wrapped in his own righteousness. 00:18:48.160 --> 00:18:54.559 So that all who believe in him could be called the generation of those who seek him. 00:18:57.519 --> 00:19:06.400 The generation that seeks his face in verse 6 is not a group of people who've achieved the standard of verse 4 on their own. 00:19:06.720 --> 00:19:08.160 That's impossible, right? 00:21:55.359 --> 00:21:59.039 Yahweh of hosts, he is the king of glory. 00:22:02.079 --> 00:22:04.240 David wasn't the king of glory. 00:22:06.079 --> 00:22:14.480 Yahweh is the king of glory entering Jerusalem, and the ark symbolized Yahweh's presence coming into the royal city. 00:22:14.720 --> 00:22:23.440 He is the God who defeated Israel's enemies, who fought for them in the wilderness, who brought down the walls of Jericho, who defeated all of their enemies. 00:22:23.599 --> 00:22:36.000 And the ark's procession up the hill of Yahweh announces that the warrior God, the victorious God, has come to dwell with his people, enthroning his presence in the royal city. 00:22:39.200 --> 00:22:50.559 Interestingly, the early church, almost from the very beginning, read Psalm 24 with the ascension of Christ in view. 00:22:52.960 --> 00:23:01.359 In Acts chapter 1, 40 days after the resurrection, Jesus led his disciples out to the Mount of Olives. 00:23:01.680 --> 00:23:03.279 You remember the story, right?
