time when the mobile revolution began, about 2000, and the average attention span has dropped from 12 seconds now to about eight seconds. 00:05:00.079 --> 00:05:03.839 Our propensity as people to forget is not new. 00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:14.959 You might think, well, this is a result of technology and having so many screens and platforms demanding our attention, but forgetfulness is an ancient problem. 00:05:15.120 --> 00:05:17.040 It's not something that's new. 00:05:17.360 --> 00:05:21.600 Consider with me for a moment the people of Israel, God's chosen people. 00:05:21.680 --> 00:05:28.639 In Judges chapter 3, verse 7, it says, And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. 00:05:28.959 --> 00:05:34.000 They forgot the Lord their God and served the Baals and the Asheroth. 00:05:34.720 --> 00:05:40.639 1 Samuel chapter 12, verse 8 through 9, Samuel's recounting the history of Israel to them. 00:05:40.800 --> 00:05:47.439 And he says, When Jacob went into Egypt, that's a reference to Jacob and his whole family, and the Egyptians oppressed them. 00:05:47.680 --> 00:06:00.560 Then your fathers cried out to the Lord, and the Lord sent Moses and Aaron, who brought your fathers out of Egypt and made them dwell in this place, that this place in this text is the promised land. 00:06:01.199 --> 00:06:17.920 So God did all of that, but then he goes on, but they forgot the Lord their God, and he sold them into the hand of Sisera, commander of the army of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them. 00:06:18.079 --> 00:06:28.560 Jeremiah chapter 23, verse 26 through 27, a little bit later on in Israel's history, Jeremiah the prophet says this on speaking as God's mouthpiece. 00:06:28.720 --> 00:06:34.879 How long shall there be lies in the heart of the prophets who prophesy lies and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart? 00:06:34.959 --> 00:06:47.360 He's addressing present-day false prophets, attempting to lead the people of God astray, who think to make my people forget my name by their dreams that they tell one another. 00:06:47.600 --> 00:06:56.480 Now you might come to a conclusion that that was a modern day issue and problem in that time, but he connects it to the past. 00:06:56.639 --> 00:07:01.360 He says, Even as their fathers forgot my name for Baal. 00:07:02.319 --> 00:07:05.120 Hosea chapter 2, verse 13. 00:07:06.000 --> 00:07:15.519 When God is bringing his chief indictment against the people of Israel, he says, This, I will punish her for the feast days of the Baals. 00:07:15.759 --> 00:07:30.079 That's a false God that the people of Israel chose to worship, when she burned offerings to them and adorned herself with her ring and jewelry, and went after her lovers and forgot me, declares the Lord. 00:07:30.720 --> 00:07:47.839 Putting this into perspective of where we're at in Deuteronomy, it seems pretty abundantly clear as to why God is so incredibly repetitive with telling his people to remember, to do, repeat, obey. 00:07:48.160 --> 00:07:57.839 He says it over and over and over because his people have a knack for forgetting even what matters most. 00:07:58.079 --> 00:08:04.240 Last week, Pastor Jason wrapped up his message on uh Deuteronomy chapters uh four and five. 00:08:04.480 --> 00:08:13.279 The last point he made on remembering God's word was that God, remembering God's word requires attention, careful attention. 00:08:13.439 --> 00:08:16.160 And that's what we're gonna pick up in Deuteronomy 6. 00:08:16.639 --> 00:08:22.720 Remembering God's word requires attention, especially as it relates to passing it down to the next generation. 00:08:22.800 --> 00:08:25.279 And that's where we're going to be this morning. 00:08:25.439 --> 00:08:29.199 That's gonna be the main thrust and focus of this morning's message. 00:08:29.360 --> 00:08:35.440 When a new generation begins to come to maturity, they don't just stumble upon the knowledge of God. 00:08:35.519 --> 00:08:38.159 They don't just happen to come across it. 00:08:38.480 --> 00:08:45.200 It must be intentionally handed down from one generation to another. 00:08:47.440 --> 00:08:48.480 That's going to be our focus. 00:08:48.559 --> 00:09:03.759 Now, before we dive in, before we begin our journey here this morning, our feast in God's Word, I want to just provide a little caveat here this morning that a lot of what I'm going to say this morning has to do with families. 00:09:03.919 --> 00:09:06.960 It applies very easily to families. 00:09:07.039 --> 00:09:10.080 In fact, I'm going to speak a lot to parents this morning. 00:09:10.320 --> 00:09:24.080 But I don't want you to get the impression that if you are not a person with children in your home, if you are a single person, unmarried, or maybe you just don't have kids, that somehow, some way this doesn't apply to you. 00:09:24.320 --> 00:09:31.919 I would argue that it absolutely applies to every single person in this room if you are part of this community of faith. 00:09:32.399 --> 00:09:43.519 If we look at the context in which Moses is given this address, he doesn't just call all the parents and families together for a little familial pep talk. 00:09:43.840 --> 00:09:47.600 He doesn't just address the parents in the congregation. 00:09:48.080 --> 00:09:50.879 He gets everyone together. 00:09:51.519 --> 00:10:02.320 And my belief, my conviction is that Moses knows it doesn't just require good, faithful parents to transmit God's word to the next generation, although that's a key part of it. 00:10:02.480 --> 00:10:13.120 It requires the intentional participation of an entire community to pass God's words from who may or may not have children willing to say, I'm going to take on this task and I'm going to come alongside you and partner with you in this and make it my priority to teach your kids about God's word. 00:10:48.960 --> 00:10:58.399 So that not only is dad and mom teaching this at home, but now we have people in church building trust with our kids, reinforcing the exact same thing. 00:10:58.720 game. 00:11:24.639 --> 00:11:34.720 So, with that said, I want us to take note of how Moses sets up the command of passing down God's words from one generation to the other. 00:11:35.200 --> 00:11:38.480 Typically, verses four through nine are the how-tos. 00:11:38.879 --> 00:11:45.840 We look at those in the in the uh Shema, um, and it gives us a lot of, here's how to go about doing it. 00:11:46.159 --> 00:11:57.200 But a lot of times we skip over a very important section in Deuteronomy 6 that is incredibly helpful for us understanding what it is that's being passed on to the next generation. 00:11:57.360 --> 00:11:59.360 Look at verses 1 through 3 with me. 00:12:00.240 --> 00:12:04.879 We see first that there is a blessing for the next generation. 00:12:05.519 --> 00:12:06.320 Verse 1. 00:12:06.559 --> 00:12:29.440 Now this is the commandment, the statutes and the rules that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it, that you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son, and your son's son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you all the days of your life, and that your days may be long. 00:12:30.000 --> 00:12:42.639 Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, as the Lord the God of your fathers has promised you in a land flowing with milk and honey. 00:12:42.879 --> 00:12:46.159 Notice the command given to obey. 00:12:46.799 --> 00:12:49.279 It's given with the end in mind. 00:12:50.240 --> 00:12:57.440 He tells them to obey through the lens that there is a promised land on the other side of obedience. 00:12:58.159 --> 00:13:00.639 He says that you may do them. verse 2, that you may fear the Lord your God. 00:13:10.320 --> 00:13:19.279 Those might not seem like blessings in and of themselves, but this is the blessing of keeping in God's covenant, of God's promises. 00:13:20.159 --> 00:13:25.759 He says, do them so that we will have a right relationship in the land that you're going to. 00:13:25.919 --> 00:13:30.320 But then look at verse 2, that your days may be long. 00:13:31.039 --> 00:13:34.320 Verse 3, that it may go well with you. 00:13:35.200 --> 00:13:42.000 Again in verse 3, that you may multiply greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey. 00:13:42.240 --> 00:13:48.960 There's an intricate connection between blessings of God and obedience to the words of God. 00:13:49.200 --> 00:13:54.080 Obeying God's words leads to God's blessing for God's covenant people in the Old Testament. 00:13:54.240 --> 00:13:57.200 It was the heart of the covenant between God and his people. 00:13:57.440 --> 00:14:04.240 If you obey my words, more than enough to provide for your family, you will multiply greatly, and you will be a great and mighty people on the earth. 00:14:14.639 --> 00:14:18.000 That was the promise to God's old covenant people. 00:14:18.320 --> 00:14:21.200 We even see it again in verses 10 through 15. 00:14:22.080 --> 00:14:50.240 He says, When the Lord your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob to give you with great and good cities that you didn't build, and houses full of all good things that you did not fill, and cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant, and when you eat and are full, then take care lest you forget the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. God is going to fulfill his end of the deal, it's as if it's going to happen. 00:15:02.799 --> 00:15:05.519 This is a blessing that will take place. 00:15:06.159 --> 00:15:08.639 It's not a disputable gods, the gods of the peoples who are around you. 00:16:17.679 --> 00:16:27.039 For the Lord your God in your midst is a jealous God, meaning he is desirous of his people, the people who bear his chapter 1, starting in verse 3. 00:18:35.200 --> 00:18:48.079 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.
