Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 00:01:02.799 --> 00:01:08.079 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leapt in her womb. 00:01:08.319 --> 00:01:18.959 And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. 00:01:19.359 --> 00:01:25.040 And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 00:01:25.280 --> 00:01:32.400 For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb left leapt for joy. --> 00:01:53.280 Mary was a young, uneducated, Jewish peasant girl. 00:01:55.519 --> 00:02:08.319 As I was reading over this passage and thinking about it, one of the things that really struck me was how much I sanitize the Bible and idealized the people in it. 00:02:08.800 --> 00:02:27.759 How much I look at the men and women of the Bible and see them as almost superhuman, as having a faith that is unattainable, that they're unflappable, that nothing bothers them, that nothing disturbs them or weighs on them or unsettles them. 00:02:29.360 --> 00:02:54.639 And as I was thinking about Mary in this, my image of her was of this quiet, faithful woman, this young teenager, honestly, probably 14 or 15 years old, that heard this announcement and with complete tranquility for the next nine months just carried on, knowing that she was in the center of God's will. 00:02:56.800 --> 00:03:12.960 But as I began to think about it and realize that Mary had the full range of emotions that we have, that she was a person just like us in every way. 00:03:13.680 --> 00:03:20.159 That there was nothing inherently different about her makeup, about her character, about her emotions. 00:03:21.439 --> 00:03:37.120 And I began to think, what would it be like to be Mary, 14 or 15 years old, when she hears the word from this angel that she is going to be with child? 00:03:37.919 --> 00:03:40.000 And she asks a question in faith. 00:03:40.080 --> 00:03:42.560 She says, How will this be? 00:03:43.280 --> 00:03:44.879 Since I'm a virgin. 00:03:45.599 --> 00:03:53.120 She doesn't doubt that God is going to do it or that it's going to happen, but she tries to comprehend how this will come to pass. 00:03:53.520 --> 00:04:02.159 And in verse 35 of that chapter, the angel answers and says, The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. 00:04:02.319 --> 00:04:06.719 Therefore, this child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. 00:04:08.800 --> 00:04:12.879 What was it like the moments after that angel left? 00:04:13.840 --> 00:04:19.759 What was it like to realize that she was pregnant? 00:04:20.319 --> 00:04:25.600 What thoughts were going through her head, what emotions were coursing through her body? 00:04:25.920 --> 00:04:29.199 Mary had a deep confidence in God, and we we see that. 00:04:29.279 --> 00:04:37.360 She had a masterful grasp of Scripture when we look at the song of Mary in this next passage that we'll study next week. 00:04:37.519 --> 00:04:42.399 We see the depth of understanding and her faith in God. 00:04:43.519 --> 00:04:55.199 But we need to be careful that we don't turn Mary into a superhuman without struggles and temptations or doubts or deep emotions. 00:04:57.600 --> 00:05:01.120 Sometimes I think when we go through the Bible, we forget that. 00:05:03.600 --> 00:05:06.480 These men and women were sinners just like us. 00:05:07.759 --> 00:05:16.879 They were sinners in need of grace, they were sinners in need of a savior, they were sinners in daily need of dependence upon God. 00:05:17.680 --> 00:05:23.759 In fact, Jesus, half-brother James, when he was talking about prayer, he uses the example of Elijah. 00:05:23.920 --> 00:05:27.360 And there he says, and Elijah was a man just like us. 00:05:27.759 --> 00:05:30.720 And I wonder why James have to say that? 00:05:30.800 --> 00:05:33.600 And then I realized, because we don't think he is. 00:05:34.560 --> 00:05:36.160 We think he's something else. 00:05:36.319 --> 00:05:41.759 We think that the people in the Bible are very different from us, and they're not. 00:05:43.360 --> 00:05:52.879 God is in the process of using Mary to be the conduit by which the Messiah will be born, the Savior of the world. 00:05:53.839 --> 00:05:59.360 The baby that she carries in her womb is God Himself wrapped in human flesh. 00:06:00.879 --> 00:06:08.160 In addition to giving birth to Jesus, she would care for him and raise him to adulthood. 00:06:13.680 --> 00:06:15.600 Joseph didn't believe her. 00:06:17.600 --> 00:06:28.240 When Joseph heard that she was pregnant, it tells us in Matthew that in graciousness he was going to quietly divorce her. 00:06:31.439 --> 00:06:33.279 She went to her family. 00:06:34.079 --> 00:06:38.959 I can imagine what her family thought when she told them that she was pregnant. 00:06:41.199 --> 00:06:44.800 I think of the gossip, the talk. 00:06:45.040 --> 00:06:53.839 I think of what was being said behind her back, the scorn, the ridicule, the mocking, the rejection, as word got out that she was pregnant. 00:06:54.879 --> 00:07:00.959 People would hear of her explanation of a virgin birth and assume that there was some scandal. 00:07:05.199 --> 00:07:11.519 Even as an adult, we find the whiff of scandal still lingering about Jesus' uncertain birth. 00:07:11.600 --> 00:07:19.199 It was thrown up in his face by the Pharisees in John chapter 8, verse 41, and they say, We know where we came from. 00:07:19.759 --> 00:07:27.759 We know our lineage, we know our background, and so the rumors that swirled continued on through adulthood. 00:07:32.079 --> 00:07:40.319 In these moments, I'm sure that Mary was confused, scared, lonely, uncertain. 00:07:44.639 --> 00:07:45.839 Why, Elizabeth? 00:07:46.399 --> 00:07:47.040 Why visit? 00:07:47.199 --> 00:07:50.319 This is one of the things that I wrestled with as I was thinking about this. 00:07:50.560 --> 00:07:52.800 What purpose does this have here? 00:07:53.439 --> 00:08:01.839 It gives us a little bit of background information, but notice what happens when the angel visits with Mary. 00:08:03.439 --> 00:08:14.079 He tells her what's going to happen, and then he says, Behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her, whom was called Baron. 00:08:16.800 --> 00:08:22.800 Why did God instruct the angel to tell Mary about Elizabeth? 00:08:23.040 --> 00:08:29.600 Well, I think one of the reasons, surely, was such news of a miraculous pregnancy would have been an encouragement to her. 00:08:29.759 --> 00:08:42.320 She would have heard about Elizabeth, her relative, who was old in age, who was past the years of having children, and now she was pregnant, she was six months, she had the baby bump. 00:08:46.799 --> 00:09:06.080 And it would remind her of another promise of God fulfilled, of thinking of another old woman who was past the age of bearing and that God had done the impossible with Abraham and Sarah, and now Elizabeth was pregnant. 00:09:06.159 --> 00:09:10.879 And so it would encourage Mary, but I think there was something more than that. 00:09:12.480 --> 00:09:23.440 I think there was a very practical reason why God told the angel, instructed the angel to tell Mary about Elizabeth. 00:09:24.879 --> 00:09:31.840 What we find here is that immediately Mary leaves to go and visit Elizabeth. 00:09:36.799 --> 00:09:47.759 We find at the in verse 56, and Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home, and then John the Baptist is born. 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:57.120 So almost immediately after Mary finds out that she is pregnant, she goes to be with Elizabeth. 00:10:00.639 --> 00:10:12.879 I think God told Mary about Elizabeth because God knew that Mary needed the encouragement of somebody who was older and wiser and would care for her young, tender heart. 00:10:13.759 --> 00:10:23.039 This was a pivotal moment in Mary's life, and she needed the encouragement and the wisdom of a godly older woman. 00:10:24.480 --> 00:10:28.480 Our weak hearts continually need to be strengthened by God's grace. 00:10:28.639 --> 00:10:37.519 And what is happening here is a very beautiful picture of the grace of God ministering to the heart of this young woman. 00:10:39.759 --> 00:10:47.279 And we need to recognize that God cares for you even as he uses you to fulfill his purpose, just like Mary. 00:10:48.559 --> 00:10:51.120 Through Mary, we learn three things. 00:10:51.279 --> 00:10:59.200 First of all, that our weak hearts continually need to be strengthened by God's grace of relationship. 00:10:59.759 --> 00:11:09.840 We'll see here that God also strengthens us by the filling of his spirit, and that God strengthens us by the grace of divine promise. 00:11:10.799 --> 00:11:19.840 Look with me at the passage and let's walk through it together and think about what God is doing in this passage in the life of Mary. 00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:27.120 First of all, our weak hearts continually need to be strengthened by God's grace of relationship. 00:11:28.000 --> 00:11:32.000 Immediately, Mary goes to be with Elizabeth. 00:11:32.480 --> 00:11:35.440 And she stays with her for three months. 00:11:37.759 --> 00:11:42.399 This was an 80, 90, 100-mile trip. 00:11:42.799 --> 00:11:46.240 We don't know if Mary took this trip by herself. 00:11:46.399 --> 00:11:48.720 It's very likely that she did. 00:11:48.960 --> 00:11:53.519 That she had no one, that she had told Joseph what happened. 00:11:53.840 --> 00:11:58.399 He still had not been visited by the angel to be told is we need the encouragement of each other. 00:12:12.720 --> 00:12:24.960 God knew that Mary needed the wisdom, grace, and love of a godly older believer, and that Elizabeth needed the encouragement and grace that would come from meeting Mary and the child that she carried in her womb. 00:12:28.879 --> 00:12:38.000 There's an importance in human relationships that I think sometimes to our own chapter 2, when he says it's not good that man should be alone. 00:13:19.679 --> 00:13:33.120 Now, clearly, this had a direct reference to marriage, but I think God was saying something more fundamental and at the core of who we are, that we were never meant to make it on our own. 00:13:33.679 --> 00:13:38.879 That we were meant to be in relationship with one another, and we see that throughout the pages of the Bible. 00:13:39.039 --> 00:13:47.279 We see it in the creation of the family, we see it through the calling out of God's people, we see it through the church. 00:13:47.600 --> 00:13:54.799 That God has called us into a community of interdependence with one another. 00:13:55.039 --> 00:14:00.559 God never intended us for be for us to be independent creatures. 00:14:01.600 --> 00:14:07.840 In fact, God could have said to Adam, well, Adam, you have me and that's enough. 00:14:08.240 --> 00:14:11.679 You have a relationship with me, and I am your all in all. 00:14:11.840 --> 00:14:15.279 There is nothing else that you need, but that isn't what God said. 00:14:16.720 --> 00:14:23.039 What God said when he looked at Adam and his human condition, he said, Ecclesiastes chapter 4, verses 9 and 10, it says, Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. 00:14:36.480 --> 00:14:40.639 For if one falls, uh the other is there to lift him up. 00:14:40.720 --> 00:14:46.080 But woe to the one, when he falls, he has no one else to lift him up. 00:14:49.440 --> 00:14:56.879 God so often uses, he pours out his grace in your life through other people. 00:14:57.600 --> 00:15:02.080 And God pours out grace in other people's lives through you. 00:15:02.799 --> 00:15:04.480 And we need each other. 00:15:05.120 --> 00:15:14.799 Let me just share a few ways how God mediates his grace in your life through other people and in other people into your life. 00:15:17.120 --> 00:15:21.840 We need other people to love us. 00:15:23.440 --> 00:15:31.279 We need to hear from other people and to know that there are other people that delight in us and that and that we delight in them. 00:15:31.519 --> 00:15:36.960 We need the relationship of human touch, of affection, of care. 00:15:40.559 --> 00:15:53.440 When Mary went to Elizabeth, immediately when Mary walked in, there was this reality of love that came out, that just poured out in the relationship. 00:15:54.480 --> 00:15:57.279 She knew Elizabeth's delight in her. 00:16:00.480 --> 00:16:11.440 We need to be in a place that is safe, where we can rest, where we can know that that there's a relationship of trust. 00:16:14.559 --> 00:16:21.600 We need people to believe in us, to believe in God's grace that is working in us and through us. 00:16:24.399 --> 00:16:25.679 We need acceptance. 00:16:25.840 --> 00:16:30.639 We need to know that that others care for us and and want us. 00:16:36.399 --> 00:16:53.600 One of the things that that happens here in this relationship and that we see it come out is the hope and the confidence that God is in control, that that oftentimes, I don't know about you, does anyone else ever get discouraged? 00:16:54.240 --> 00:16:55.679 Am I the only one? 00:16:56.559 --> 00:17:02.240 Anyone else just get like you wake up on the wrong side of the bed and your bed's up against the wall? 00:17:02.559 --> 00:17:04.240 You know those kind of days? 00:17:04.799 --> 00:17:17.519 And and and you you're going through life, you're going through the day, and then and then you begin to talk to somebody else, and and and this person begins to remind you of God's grace and his love. 00:17:17.759 --> 00:17:24.799 He begins to remind you not of yourself, but of the confidence that you have in the God who loves you. 00:17:24.960 --> 00:17:37.200 And as you begin to talk, as you begin to interact in this relationship, and this person points you back to Jesus, hope begins to fill up in your heart. 00:17:38.400 --> 00:17:40.000 We need each other. 00:17:41.680 --> 00:17:52.880 We need to know that there are people that we can be around and feel safe and feel secure and know that we can just rest and be ourselves. 00:17:55.599 --> 00:18:09.920 We need one another to be reminded of God's grace so that we have confidence in God and what he's doing and the assurance that it'll be alright, that everything is going to work out in the end. 00:18:11.680 --> 00:18:20.799 We need each other to be reminded of God's enablement and to be strengthened by the encouragement that we get from one another. 00:18:21.119 --> 00:18:27.119 Notice what Elizabeth says: Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. 00:18:27.359 --> 00:18:36.960 The words that come out of Elizabeth's mouth are words of blessing and 00:19:01.440 And each of us need those very things as well. 00:19:02.160 --> 00:19:14.240 Mary wasn't superhuman, she wasn't super spiritual, she was a young, godly woman who needed the love and the your life that you can go to and you can tell him or her anything? 00:19:27.599 --> 00:19:34.319 And know that you will be loved, that you will be accepted, that you will be pointed to Jesus. that there is such a depth of relationship that people can come to you and feel safe and say, no matter what you've done, I will love you and care for you. 00:19:57.920 --> 00:19:59.759 I will point is in God's grace, He directed this young, poor, uneducated, teenage, pregnant girl to Elizabeth. 00:20:22.799 --> 00:20:28.799 And our weak hearts continually need to be strengthened by the grace of God in relationship. 00:20:29.119 --> 00:20:38.000 But secondly, we find here in this passage that our weak hearts continually need to be strengthened by God's grace of his spirit, of the spirit's filling. 00:20:39.680 --> 00:20:52.079 If we were to take an overview of the Gospel of Luke, one of the things that would strike us over and over again is the central focus on the Holy Spirit throughout this entire book. 00:20:52.720 --> 00:20:55.599 People are led by the Spirit and filled with the Spirit. 00:20:56.000 --> 00:20:57.680 They're moved by God's Spirit. 00:20:57.839 --> 00:21:04.960 God's Spirit is at work throughout all of the different details of what's happening in the Gospel of Luke. 00:21:06.400 --> 00:21:13.839 In fact, earlier it's it's said of John that he was filled with the Spirit even from his mother's womb. 00:21:13.920 --> 00:21:15.680 It says that in verse 15. 00:21:18.079 --> 00:21:41.039 It's an unusual reality that God was so at work that even in the womb, John the Baptist was filled with the Spirit, and we see that in the reaction that John has when Mary and the baby that she carries come into the room, and he rejoices in the womb over this child. 00:21:43.440 --> 00:21:52.960 Elizabeth hears Mary's greeting, and it says in verse 41 the baby leapt in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 00:21:55.359 --> drunk with wine. 00:22:16.079 --> 00:22:19.599 That is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit. 00:22:20.960 --> 00:22:31.359 Now the Bible doesn't say that it's inherently wrong to drink, but it does say that when a person becomes drunk, when he gives himself over to alcohol, that it is a sin. 00:22:31.440 --> 00:22:37.039 And there's a reason given in that Ephesians passage that why that is so. 00:22:37.279 --> 00:22:43.440 When somebody becomes drunk, they are under the controlling influence of alcohol. 00:22:44.480 --> 00:22:49.279 They're under the controlling influence of alcohol. 00:22:49.359 --> 00:22:59.039 But in a similar way, when a person is filled with the Spirit, he has submitted himself and he's under the controlling influence of the Holy Spirit. 00:22:59.440 --> 00:23:09.359 That's one of the key components of being filled with the Spirit is submitting, of yielding ourselves to God's control in our lives in the person of the Holy Spirit. 00:23:10.240 --> 00:23:17.200 Paradoxically, when a person is under the influence, under the controlling influence of alcohol, he loses all self-control. 00:23:17.519 --> 00:23:24.640 But when a person is under the controlling influence of the Holy Spirit, one of the fruits of that is self-control. 00:23:25.839 --> 00:23:35.519 And so to be filled with the Spirit in part carries the idea of being under the controlling influence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. 00:23:36.480 --> 00:23:40.400 It also carries the idea of being empowered by the Spirit. 00:23:40.559 --> 00:23:49.519 In Acts chapter 4, verse 31, it says, They were filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness. 00:23:50.319 --> 00:24:00.640 And there the filling, the empowering, the enabling of the Holy Spirit, the strengthening of the Holy Spirit gave them boldness to continue their ministry. 00:24:03.440 --> 00:24:14.799 And it isn't that you have more of the Holy Spirit when you're filled with the Spirit, because you have all of the Holy Spirit that God is giving you at the moment that you come to Christ. 00:24:15.039 --> 00:24:20.319 But in a very real sense, when you're filled with the Spirit, the Holy Spirit has more of you. 00:24:21.359 --> 00:24:31.039 That you have yielded your life, yielded your heart, yielded control to the Holy Spirit's work in your life. 00:24:32.799 --> 00:24:40.720 And so what we see in this passage is God's grace of the Holy Spirit working through the circumstances. 00:24:41.680 --> 00:24:47.839 It's through the Holy Spirit that Elizabeth says, 00:25:02.319 It's the Holy Spirit's influence that Elizabeth says something that she couldn't possibly have known on her own. 00:25:04.079 --> 00:25:08.880 Mary was only a few days pregnant at this point, maybe a week or two weeks. 00:25:09.200 --> 00:25:23.119 The moment that Mary walks into the room, John the Baptist in Elizabeth's womb leapt, and Mary says these words, and what she says is is the first person to recognize that Jesus Christ is the Messiah, is the Savior that's going to come. 00:25:44.319 --> 00:25:50.240 The Holy Spirit working in her heart moved her to recognize who Jesus was. 00:25:52.480 --> 00:26:01.119 More than that moved in the baby to recognize who Jesus was, that this child is the Lord. 00:26:04.480 --> 00:26:09.519 John the Baptist leapt in Elizabeth's womb. 00:26:10.400 --> 00:26:12.000 This was no mere kick. 00:26:12.240 --> 00:26:15.359 This was no mere moving around or unsettling. 00:26:15.920 --> 00:26:22.240 The word here for leapt literally means a triple backflip with a twist. 00:26:23.200 --> 00:26:25.119 Just checking to see if you're awake. 00:26:27.920 --> 00:26:37.200 Literally, I mean, this was an amazing movement of this baby, unlike anything Elizabeth had ever felt. 00:26:38.079 --> 00:26:42.480 And it says that John the Baptist leapt with joy. 00:26:45.440 --> 00:26:50.000 This was the first encounter of John the Baptist and Jesus. 00:26:50.720 --> 00:26:52.960 Jesus the Messiah, the promised one. 00:26:53.359 --> 00:26:57.039 Why did John leap with joy? 00:26:58.480 --> 00:27:01.359 Because Jesus was the promised one to come. 00:27:02.400 --> 00:27:07.119 Jesus was and is Emmanuel, God with us. 00:27:07.440 --> 00:27:10.480 Jesus has come to save his people from their sins. 00:27:10.720 --> 00:27:16.079 He was, as John would say later, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. 00:27:16.400 --> 00:27:26.960 Jesus is the one who came to die on the cross to pay the penalty for all of our sins so that
