as we go along so that it isn't completely foreign to you. 00:01:13.599 --> 00:01:29.280 But on Friday evening, we looked in Mark chapter 14 and chapter 15 about the testimony that condemned the Lord Jesus Christ, that sent him to the cross. 00:01:30.719 --> 00:01:42.879 Testimony is a word that means that there is someone who is speaking to give authentication to a fact, to something that happened. 00:01:43.280 --> 00:01:52.079 They are a witness to an event, to an element, and they are speaking about that and giving testimony to that. 00:01:52.560 --> 00:02:01.359 In the Gospel of Mark, we looked at the testimony that condemned Christ to death. 00:02:02.159 --> 00:02:09.439 And it was not the testimony of those that the chief priests brought together to bear witness against him. 00:02:10.639 --> 00:02:15.360 It was his own testimony that sent him to the cross. 00:02:15.759 --> 00:02:17.680 That's the testimony that condemned him. 00:02:17.840 --> 00:02:25.280 And now I want to speak about the testimony that is confirming of that event. 00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:36.560 What is it that we see in the pages of Scripture that gives us confirmation as we gather together today before the Word of God that this is the truth? 00:02:36.879 --> 00:02:41.599 That Christ did rise from the dead, that the tomb is empty. 00:02:42.240 --> 00:02:50.319 That's what I want us to notice this morning as we just really walk through many, many passages of Scripture together this morning. 00:02:51.360 --> 00:03:01.120 You know, I read a story in a commentary about an old English country church. 00:03:01.280 --> 00:03:08.560 There was a small village church that had an arch over the entry of its chapel. 00:03:08.800 --> 00:03:13.840 And on that arch there were some words inscribed on the stone. 00:03:14.240 --> 00:03:18.240 The words were we preach Christ crucified. 00:03:18.800 --> 00:03:21.599 We preach Christ crucified. 00:03:22.560 --> 00:03:34.560 Several generations of pastors served that little village church for several generations faithfully, presenting a message of a crucified and risen Savior. 00:03:34.879 --> 00:03:45.439 But then another generation of pastors arose who thought that Christ crucified was kind of an outdated message. 00:03:45.919 --> 00:03:48.639 They didn't see the importance of his death. 00:03:48.800 --> 00:03:53.680 And so they focused instead on the example that Christ provided. 00:03:54.639 --> 00:04:02.080 Well, after some time, as the story goes, a vine began to grow up on the face of the building. 00:04:02.319 --> 00:04:06.719 And that vine eventually covered the word crucified. 00:04:07.439 --> 00:04:12.000 So that all that was seen was we preach Christ. 00:04:13.520 --> 00:04:19.199 And soon people began to be uncomfortable with the message of Christ. 00:04:19.279 --> 00:04:28.000 And so the church began to have messages on morality, on politics, on philosophy, and other popular issues. 00:04:28.240 --> 00:04:31.839 And as time went on, that ivy began to grow even more. 00:04:31.920 --> 00:04:41.519 And soon it covered up more words on the arch until the words that were seen, that were visible on that arch were the words we preach. 00:04:44.560 --> 00:05:01.680 Now I'm not in a position to verify anything of that story or to make statements about the veracity of it, but it is a compelling story because it fits with the progression of preaching in our modern churches. 00:05:03.839 --> 00:05:11.439 That is so much the opposite of what we find recorded in the New Testament. 00:05:11.680 --> 00:05:14.639 Take, for example, Acts chapter 2. 00:05:15.199 --> 00:05:28.560 The very first sermon of the church, proclaimed by the Apostle Peter and recorded in Acts chapter 2, had this statement as its thesis. 00:05:28.800 --> 00:05:33.759 It's in Acts chapter 2, beginning in verse 23, if you have a Bible. 00:05:34.079 --> 00:05:46.000 It says, This Jesus delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and you killed by the hands of lawless men. 00:05:46.480 --> 00:05:54.319 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. 00:05:54.399 --> 00:05:58.000 That's the very first sermon of the church. 00:05:58.319 --> 00:06:02.079 We preach Christ crucified and risen again. 00:06:02.959 --> 00:06:20.720 From its inception, the message, the testimony, the witness of the church has been that Jesus, who is the Christ, the Messiah, was crucified and was buried. 00:06:21.680 --> 00:06:25.279 And on the third day he was raised to life. 00:06:26.399 --> 00:06:28.480 That's been the church's message. 00:06:28.639 --> 00:06:34.480 That's been the intention for its message from the very beginning. 00:06:35.279 --> 00:06:42.160 That message was and is still today received in various ways. 00:06:43.759 --> 00:06:56.319 Increasingly, sadly, there are many in our modern world who have never even heard of Jesus, who is the Christ. 00:06:56.720 --> 00:07:02.720 Now, to those of us in the Western Christianized world, that seems astounding, but it's it's true. 00:07:02.879 --> 00:07:06.959 Even in our own country, the United States of America, that is increasing. 00:07:08.639 --> 00:07:15.920 The message of Christ crucified, buried, and risen is often received with skepticism. 00:07:16.879 --> 00:07:30.480 Now that shouldn't surprise anyone, as our faith is a belief system centered in faith, that assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things that we cannot see. 00:07:32.879 --> 00:07:39.439 Some go even further than skepticism and simply reject the message of Christ crucified. 00:07:42.399 --> 00:07:52.959 Rejectors exist, those who, for various reasons, refuse to exercise faith and trust in the crucified and risen Lord. 00:07:53.040 --> 00:07:55.360 And of course, there are those who are believers. 00:08:02.639 --> 00:08:11.279 This day of remembrance and worship and celebration of a risen and thus living Lord. 00:08:13.040 --> 00:08:31.120 Now I recognize that in this era of live streaming where every church is live streaming now, it Nothing that I say or do can do that. 00:09:52.399 --> 00:09:54.960 I want you to see what the Bible says. 00:09:56.240 --> 00:10:00.240 Now, of course, that means that I'm approaching this with a presupposition. 00:10:00.480 --> 00:10:05.200 There's a foundation that already exists in what I'm about to say to you. 00:10:05.519 --> 00:10:12.799 Because this book, this book we call a Bible, makes a claim that it is without error. 00:10:13.759 --> 00:10:17.679 It makes a claim that it is without error because God wrote it. 00:10:18.000 --> 00:10:28.960 Yes, God used human authors, but he did that in a way to accomplish his record of his revelation of himself just as he wanted it. 00:10:29.440 --> 00:10:34.240 And we don't have time this morning to walk through all of the proofs for that. 00:10:34.879 --> 00:10:44.799 You just need to know that I'm beginning with that foundation, that I am beginning with a belief that this book is absolutely true. 00:10:45.919 --> 00:10:50.320 That the God it speaks of exists. 00:10:50.879 --> 00:10:56.000 And that what he says about himself can be trusted. 00:10:56.879 --> 00:11:03.039 This book records the truth, God's truth, from a God who cannot lie. 00:11:04.080 --> 00:11:12.399 And so this book records the history of a man named Jesus who lived a relatively short life, somewhere around 33 years. 00:11:13.120 --> 00:11:14.559 He did many good things. 00:11:14.879 --> 00:11:16.879 He was an excellent teacher. 00:11:17.200 --> 00:11:23.200 He proclaimed to be the fulfillment of all of God's promises from the beginning to the end. 00:11:24.559 --> 00:11:35.759 He claimed to be the Son of God who came to redeem or to rescue his people from the condemnation of their sins against God. 00:11:41.840 --> 00:11:47.840 And his ministry was directed first towards his own people, the Jewish people. 00:11:48.480 --> 00:11:53.519 But they rejected him and sought for a way to be rid of him. 00:11:54.320 --> 00:11:56.559 That led to his death. 00:11:57.279 --> 00:12:04.480 If you were listening on Friday evening, you heard about the testimony that condemned Jesus to death. 00:12:06.159 --> 00:12:14.399 We looked at Mark 14 and 15, where we saw that the Jewish leaders couldn't even orchestrate false testimony against Jesus. 00:12:14.559 --> 00:12:18.000 They couldn't get a bunch of liars together to tell the same lie. 00:12:18.879 --> 00:12:23.759 Try as they might, they couldn't rig the judicial system to be rid of Jesus. 00:12:25.039 --> 00:12:29.279 They sought out false testimony against him, but nothing worked. 00:12:30.480 --> 00:12:36.159 Try as they might, they could not find a way to condemn Jesus. 00:12:41.360 --> 00:12:45.360 That in itself points, I think, to the perfection of Jesus. answer to the question, are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One? 00:13:06.559 --> 00:13:11.440 Jesus said, Yes, I am. 00:13:12.480 --> 00:13:22.000 And the day will come when you will see me, the Son of Man, seated at the right hand of power, coming on the clouds of heaven. 00:13:25.200 --> 00:13:35.440 Way back in 1859, Scottish preacher John Duncan wrote of something that he called a trilemma. 00:13:37.200 --> 00:13:38.720 Here's what he wrote. 00:13:39.120 --> 00:13:51.600 Christ either deceived mankind by conscious fraud, or he was himself deluded and self-deceived. 00:13:52.720 --> 00:13:54.320 Or he was divine. 00:13:55.519 --> 00:13:58.240 There's no getting out of that trilemma. 00:13:58.559 --> 00:14:00.320 It is inexorable. 00:14:04.320 --> 00:14:19.840 Later, Watchman Knee wrote in his book, Normal Christian Faith, that a person claiming to be God has to be a lunatic, a liar, or, in fact, God. 00:14:21.039 --> 00:14:21.600 C.S. 00:14:21.679 --> 00:14:30.639 Lewis then popularized that triad in a 1942 lecture, and later he put it in print in his book, Mere Christianity. 00:14:31.519 --> 00:14:33.919 Jesus must be a lunatic or a liar. 00:14:34.080 --> 00:14:37.200 If he is neither of those, then he must be Lord. 00:14:39.120 --> 00:14:40.399 Here is Lewis's, C.S. 00:14:40.480 --> 00:14:44.320 Lewis's most popular statement of that truth. 00:14:45.200 --> 00:14:56.320 And I quote, a man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not simply be a moral teacher. 00:14:56.879 --> 00:14:58.399 Here's where it gets good. 00:14:58.799 --> 00:15:10.960 He would either be a lunatic, that is the kind of person who believes he's a poached egg, or he would be the devil of hell. 00:15:12.159 --> 00:15:14.480 You must make your choice. 00:15:15.840 --> 00:15:25.759 Either this man was and is the Son of God, or else a madman, or something worse. 00:15:27.840 --> 00:15:37.919 If you are a skeptic, or you've chosen to reject the message of the Bible, you must wrestle with that conclusion. 00:15:39.039 --> 00:15:45.279 This man, Jesus, claimed to be the son of the divine ruler of the universe. 00:15:46.080 --> 00:15:50.799 His claim wasn't an inferior one, but a co-equal claim. 00:15:50.960 --> 00:16:00.720 He claimed to be the vice regent of everything that exists, and that one day he will return in judgment of everyone who rebels against him. 00:16:02.720 --> 00:16:04.879 A dead man can't do that. 00:16:06.799 --> 00:16:13.360 That is the testimony of Jesus, and it was a testimony that condemned him to a Roman cross. 00:16:14.080 --> 00:16:20.159 He proclaimed it before human beings to whom he had submitted himself and his humanity. 00:16:20.399 --> 00:16:25.840 And his testimony about himself led directly to his death, and he knew it. 00:16:27.039 --> 00:16:29.519 And yet he walked that path anyway. 00:16:30.639 --> 00:16:35.679 He knew that they wanted him dead, and yet he made the statements that led to his death. 00:16:36.320 --> 00:16:37.360 Willingly. 00:17:19.200 --> 00:17:25.519 Everything happened on Sunday morning where some women and other disciples realized the tomb is empty, what's going on. 00:17:25.680 --> 00:17:27.920 Then Jesus met with some of his disciples. 00:17:28.079 --> 00:17:32.880 And that meeting is recorded in the Gospel of Luke. 00:17:33.200 --> 00:17:36.000 Now, Luke was a medical doctor. 00:17:36.240 --> 00:17:40.720 So he was quite educated, one of the most educated individuals of the ancient world. 00:17:40.799 --> 00:17:48.000 He was a very smart individual and intellect, and we can tell that from the way he wrote his book. 00:17:48.880 --> 00:17:55.759 Luke, Luke records things very meticulously, and so he's a great historian. 00:17:56.559 --> 00:18:04.000 I want you to notice how Luke records that meeting between Jesus after his resurrection and his disciples. 00:18:04.160 --> 00:18:08.640 We see this in Luke 24, beginning in verse 44. 00:18:09.359 --> 00:18:11.519 Here's how Luke records it. 00:18:11.759 --> 00:18:20.720 Then he said to them, that is Jesus saying to his disciples, these are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you. 00:18:21.119 --> 00:18:26.720 That everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled. 00:18:26.880 --> 00:18:28.480 That's referring to the Old Testament. 00:18:28.640 --> 00:18:37.920 The Hebrew Old Testament has three divisions the law, the writings, and the prophets, and so that's all going together there in Jesus' statement. 00:18:38.640 --> 00:18:42.319 Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures. 00:18:42.559 --> 00:19:00.559 And he said to them, Thus it is written in the Old Testament that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 00:19:00.960 --> 00:19:05.279 You are witnesses of these things. 00:19:06.000 --> 00:19:08.880 You are witnesses of these things. 00:19:09.039 --> 00:19:17.279 Just a few verses later, Jesus is taken away from the disciples as he ascended into heaven, where he is today. 00:19:18.000 --> 00:19:30.319 But here, Jesus, before his death, he gave testimony about himself, and now after his resurrection, he is preparing his followers for his absence. 00:19:30.720 --> 00:19:38.880 And he reminds them that just as he gave testimony about himself, now they are to give testimony about him. 00:19:39.279 --> one, volume two is the book of Acts, and that's where I want to direct our attention for the remainder of our time. 00:20:15.519 --> 00:20:23.759 But it's important to remember that Luke records Jesus' specific statement to his followers. 00:20:24.319 --> 00:20:27.440 You are my witnesses. 00:20:27.759 --> 00:20:32.720 Now, in volume two, in chapter one, verse eight of the book of Acts, that is repeated. 00:20:32.880 --> 00:20:36.319 But this time as a directive from the risen Lord. 00:20:37.039 --> 00:20:39.920 You will be my witnesses. 00:20:41.599 --> 00:20:42.799 So he's repeating it. 00:20:42.960 --> 00:20:46.480 Luke is reminding us, this is what my first volume ended with. 00:20:46.640 --> 00:20:48.720 Now here's how the second volume is beginning. 00:20:48.880 --> 00:20:50.160 Jesus is giving a directive. 00:20:50.319 --> 00:20:54.880 Go out and be my witnesses, give testimony of me. 00:20:56.400 --> 00:21:02.559 Acts chapter 2 is arguably the most important chapter in church history. 00:21:03.839 --> 00:21:17.759 I wish that every church history book would begin with Acts chapter 2, because it's the official beginning of the church, and it includes the very first sermon preached by the church, preached by Peter. 00:21:18.400 --> 00:21:30.240 Now I want you to notice what our historian, Master Luke, recorded about that very first sermon, Acts chapter 2, beginning in verse 29. 00:21:33.519 --> 00:21:46.480 Brothers, I say to you with confidence about the patriarch David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 00:21:46.799 --> 00:21:59.359 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on the throne, he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of Christ. 00:22:00.000 --> 00:22:06.720 That he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh seek corruption. 00:22:07.680 --> 00:22:12.000 This Jesus God raised up. 00:22:13.119 --> 00:22:17.440 And of that we are all witnesses. 00:22:19.119 --> 00:22:31.839 The very first sermon preached by the church after Jesus has ascended into heaven is carrying out the command to testify. 00:22:33.440 --> 00:22:39.359 Peter says, We are first hand witnesses of this fact. 00:22:39.599 --> 00:22:49.759 Now, a short time later, Peter and John were preaching in the temple in Jerusalem in chapter 3, and they healed a man. 00:22:49.920 --> 00:22:55.519 And after healing a man, they're dealing with all of the hubbub that comes as a result of that. 00:22:55.839 --> 00:23:06.240 Beginning in chapter 3, in verse 14, we read, You denied the holy and righteous one. 00:23:06.880 --> 00:23:09.519 And you asked for a murderer to be granted to you. 00:23:09.599 --> 00:23:10.720 That's Barabbas. 00:23:12.079 --> 00:23:17.119 And you killed, instead of killing Barabbas, you killed the author of life. 00:23:17.279 --> 00:23:22.799 Instead of killing the murderer, the one who took life, you killed the one who gives life. 00:23:23.680 --> 00:23:27.039 Whom God raised from the dead. 00:23:27.920 --> 00:23:32.240 To this we are witnesses. 00:23:33.440 --> 00:23:34.960 See what's happening? 00:23:35.440 --> 00:23:41.039 They're obeying the command of Jesus, but they are testifying again and again and again. 00:23:41.359 --> 00:23:43.279 We saw him. 00:23:44.880 --> 00:23:48.160 We have firsthand knowledge of this truth. 00:23:48.480 --> 00:23:50.400 Listen to us. 00:23:52.400 --> 00:23:55.680 It's our theme of testimony continuing on. 00:23:55.920 --> 00:24:01.759 Now that stirred up the religious authorities who brought Peter and John in for questioning. 00:24:02.000 --> 00:24:15.039 And after the questioning, the apostles were warned in chapter 4 to not speak or teach in the name of Jesus again at all. 00:24:15.920 --> 00:24:29.440 Well, Peter and John answered in verse 19, well, whether it's right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than God, you must judge. 00:24:30.720 --> 00:24:37.839 For we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard. 00:24:39.680 --> 00:24:47.440 Do you see that theme of testimony, of being a witness, a firsthand witness of these things continuing? 00:24:47.680 --> 00:24:54.160 These are witnesses who are giving firsthand knowledge of everything that they have seen and heard regarding Jesus. 00:24:54.319 --> 00:24:55.839 This is after Jesus is gone. 00:24:55.920 --> 00:24:57.599 He's returned to heaven. 00:24:58.000 --> 00:25:02.160 And his followers are giving testimony to what they've seen and heard. 00:25:02.400 --> 00:25:24.559 If it wasn't true, if the tomb wasn't really empty, or if as the rumors that were circulated by the religious leaders were really true, if his body was simply stolen and put somewhere else, if they had not actually seen Jesus alive after his death, why continue this charade? 00:25:26.240 --> 00:25:29.599 Wouldn't they have been proven wrong at some point? 00:25:33.279 --> 00:25:36.000 We see all of this again in chapter 5. 00:25:37.519 --> 00:25:41.359 The apostles, you remember, are Jesus' witnesses. 00:25:42.799 --> 00:25:46.079 Well, they were arrested, again, for preaching. 00:25:46.799 --> 00:25:52.319 They had to obey God, they had to obey and testify of the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:25:52.400 --> 00:25:54.480 And so they were arrested for that. 00:25:55.039 --> 00:25:59.839 And in Acts chapter 5, verse 28, they are reminded of that. 00:26:00.079 --> 00:26:01.599 The authorities asked them, What's up? 00:26:01.839 --> 00:26:04.319 We charged you not to do that, and here you are doing it. 00:26:04.400 --> 00:26:05.599 You're stirring people up. 00:26:05.759 --> 00:26:08.079 And here's how Peter responded. 00:26:08.559 --> 00:26:12.720 Peter and the apostles answered in chapter 5, verse 29 of Acts. 00:26:13.039 --> 00:26:15.759 We must obey God rather than men. 00:26:16.559 --> 00:26:22.319 The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree. 00:26:22.720 --> 00:26:30.400 But God exalted him at his right hand as leader and savior to give repentance to Israel and the forgiveness of sins. 00:26:30.640 --> 00:26:40.240 And we are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him. 00:26:42.799 --> 00:26:46.720 Those religious leaders then want to kill the apostles. 00:26:48.880 --> 00:27:01.839 It's interesting that the reaction of the world at large is not to receive the testimony of firsthand witnesses, but to kill them. 00:27:02.400 --> 00:27:07.039 Just like they killed the one who gave testimony about himself. 00:27:08.319 --> 00:27:10.640 But here we have an additional witness, don't we? 00:27:10.799 --> 00:27:16.720 The Holy Spirit, God's own spirit that has been given to those who believe in Christ. 00:27:17.039 --> 00:27:20.559 He becomes a new witness in this scenario. 00:27:20.880 --> 00:27:31.359 But this theme of being witnesses who testify to the truth because they have seen and heard continues on, almost page by page, through the entire book of Acts. 00:27:31.599 --> 00:27:38.799 It's stated very clearly again in chapter 8 and verse 25 and chapter 9 and verse 15. 00:27:40.240 --> 00:27:46.880 There's many more, but it's here that I want us to look at chapter 10. 00:27:47.359 --> 00:27:50.400 Because Peter said, and we are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit. 00:41:11.280 --> 00:41:18.639 The Holy Spirit is a witness to the reality, to the truth that Jesus died, was buried, and gathered quite the crowd to hear Peter speak. 00:41:32.480 --> 00:41:35.519 That was long before our days of social distancing. 00:41:37.519 --> 00:42:01.920 When all of those who were gathered heard, heard Peter, and they believed his testimony, his firsthand authentication of the truth, when they believed that what he said, that his testimony was the truth, the Holy Spirit instantly indwelled them, giving final confirmation to the truth and to their faith. 00:42:03.519 --> 00:42:08.079 Now, what do you do with all of this testimony? 00:42:10.239 --> 00:42:19.039 If you're skeptical, hear
